Business | Chair’s message

Member Engagement By Nancy Vorhees, Chairwoman

I

recently had the opportunity to meet with member Tamara McGregor-and what a pleasure it was! Shawn Smith, our CFO/Interim CEO, joined us to discuss the Valley House Committee and its work. That discussion quickly evolved into a brainstorming session about ways to engage our Valley tennis members. I have to say that the brainiest contributions to our conversation came from Tamara, who is a one-woman powerhouse of creativity and community building. These qualities shine in her professional pursuits, which includes journalist, editor of the Inlander’s Annual Manual, and adjunct professor at Gonzaga University. But what really gets Tamara’s heart pounding, beyond her wonderful family, is a great game of tennis at the Spokane Club Valley. Tamara has been a Club member for 22 years and while she has enjoyed many aspects of the Club during that time, it’s tennis that is her passion. She plays on several USTA teams for the Club, takes private and group lessons and is a Cardio Tennis participant. Not surprisingly, much of our recent conversation focused on ways to better engage with the Valley tennis community,

improve tennis-specific programming, and grow already-dynamic tournaments. From reaching out to team captains to getting the word out about Club happenings, to sports fundamentals classes for kids, to junior memberships, Tamara was generous with her ideas, passionate in her enthusiasm and inclusive in her thinking. These are all great qualities in a Club member. But what I appreciate most is Tamara’s desire and commitment to being an active part of the engagement and not just an interested, or opinionated, bystander. She has chaired the Valley House committee for the past two years and has signed up for a third term. She helps organize tournaments, encourages her teammates, and is positive and

supportive of our staff. That’s a winning combination! The same kind of energetic engagement on the part of our members is what has made programs like the Cellar Dwellers, now currently at 125 members and with a waiting list, so successful. Those early founding members of the Cellar Dwellers showed up not only with ideas, but with the passion and commitment to get the work done and keep it going. Similar engagement has happened with our Social Dancers group, who are thriving, and our Barron Wine Room and Cellar members, who had a vision and saw it to fruition and prosperity. In addition to these types of dynamic group engagements are the many hundreds of our individual members who regularly come to the Club for workouts, classes, dining and events. In the process, they build friendships and family traditions that endure for generations. I know I have made friends and memories for life here, and my life is enriched, and healthier, for it. What about you? How do you engage with the Club today and how would you like to continue that engagement in the future? I’d love to hear your ideas. Please email me at vorheen@inhs.org. I wish all of you a wonderful holiday season and a healthy and prosperous New Year. See you at the Club!

Ride for Red – Rides Again!

By Kate Spencer, Editor in Chief

uthentic relationships and community engagement are core values of the Spokane Club and its members. A perfect example of those values in action happens every Friday at 6 am! Cycle instructor, Vicki Carter, comes from a large military family. Five years ago, her son and brother were deployed simultaneously to Afghanistan. In an effort to get through the weeks and months of their deployment, Vicki and several Spokane Club members came up with the idea to Ride for Red (wearing red shirts) every Friday. As the months passed, Club members decided to continue their Ride for Red in honor and support of all of our current

and past military persons serving our country. “I don’t know how I would have made it through that difficult time without the support and encouragement from the members,” recalls Vicki, who is also a vital leader of the innovative Vets on the Farm program.

Club members continue their Ride for Red in honor and support of all of our current and past military persons serving our country.

Five years have passed since Ride for Red began. And once again Vicki’s son has been deployed to the Middle East and is scheduled to be gone until next June. Once again, Vicki knows she has great community support at the Club. “The members and staff have graciously gone above and beyond to show patriotic support and unwavering friendship. It will be a long nine months, but this time I know we’ll make through!” Please join us at 6 am at the Downtown Club in recognition of the thousands of loved ones serving our country abroad. Just remember if it’s a Friday morning, wear your RED shirt!

Community Engagement: Reaching Out and Reaching Back

Front: Kevin Finch, CEO, Big Table Back: Chris Dietz, Mandy Swanson, Kate Spencer, Tim Arndt

By Kate Spencer, Editor in Chief

A

key component of the Strategic Plan of the Spokane Club is to engage with the community. That phrase means many important things. It starts within our own Club community—knowing our members’ names, remembering their birthdays, greeting them with a sincere smile, offering them relevant programs and events, and helping them enjoy and thrive in their busy lives. We are working on consistently delivering those special, personal touches within our organization and staff, as well as in special

member services and amenities that add ongoing value to Club membership. [For more on this, see page 24.] Another critical piece of community engagement is being a good citizen of our greater Spokane community. This engagement honors the Spokane in the Spokane Club’s name. Our signature event for this community engagement is the annual Charity Bracket Buster. The fundraising event is held at the Club and is open to the Boards, staff, volunteers, supporters and friends of local 501c3 non-profits.

4 . Signals | The Spokane Club magazine | November/December 2015

Last year’s event raised $17,400 for local charities in a little over an hour. The big winner last year was Spokane Guilds’ School. The school’s Executive Director, Dick Boysen, shared this message about the event: “We are honored to be part of this entire enterprise. With this involvement, and our fortunate winnings, more funds are available to help the children and families we serve as they face the challenges of developmental disabilities and/or delays.” Other winning charities last year were: Camp STIX, Rotary 21, Spokane County United Way, Habitat for Humanity Spokane and Spokane Hoopfest Association. To learn more about the Charity Bracket Buster, see page 5. In addition to the Spokane Club’s annual Bracket Buster event, the Club supports likeminded local non-profits by donating gift certificates to their fundraising auctions. The certificates typically consist of a one-night stay in the Club hotel, with dinner or breakfast options. Organizations that have been recipients of these certificates in 2015 include: Big Table, Cancer Can’t Golf Tournament, Providence Medical Group fundraiser for United Way, Saint Luke’s Charity Fundraiser and SNAP’s Dad’s Day Dash. This fall, the Spokane Club donated gift certificates for four, one-night stays at the Club Hotel to the Big Table Eats Around the World fundraiser held at the Grand Hotel. The Club’s gift certificate was combined in a package with Dinner for 8 at Wandering Table. The combo packet sold for $3,000. Big Table is a local non-profit dedicated to helping the lives of people working in the restaurant and hospitality industry. They do this in part by building community around shared meals and caring for those in crisis. This community and care is open to all in the industry

without condition. Several members of our Spokane Club restaurant and hospitality team have been profoundly helped by Big Table in 2015, for which we are both grateful and inspired. Recently, the Personal Training team of the Club, led by Tim Arndt, hosted an appreciation event for all their personal training clients. A portion of the evening was dedicated to the Train the Trainer auction, where the clients bid for an opportunity to “train” the Personal Trainer of their choice. Over $900 was raised in short order. These funds will go to Big Table in support of their mission and our shared dedication to those in the restaurant and hospitality industry. This type of engagement provides the opportunity to reach out to the greater Spokane community, while reaching back to support our own Club community, both members and staff. The Spokane Club provides collection bins for several charitable causes, both seasonal and ongoing. These include Second Harvest Food Bank, Mission Community Outreach Christmas Fund and Project Beauty Share. The Club also shows our community spirit with exterior banners and colors to support community-wide events like Bloomsday and Race for the Cure. And this year, our Think Pink, Drink Pink campaign in Burgundys raised funds for breast cancer research. The Club’s Community Engagement Committee, chaired by Anne Marie Axworthy, meets 6-8 times per year, depending on needs and projects. This committee is currently full. For more information on community engagement, please contact Kate Spencer, Staff Liaison to the Community Engagement Committee, at kspencer@spokaneclub.org.

Rotary 21 Board President, PJ Watters with Vice President, Joe Bruce with their winnings from the last Charity Bracket Buster!

Fourth Annual Charity Bracket Buster Happens March 2016! NCAA March Madness will soon be upon us and that means it’s time for the Charity Bracket Buster! This annual community event sponsored by the Spokane Club raises funds for local charities by auctioning off the field of 64 during the March Madness playoffs. How can you start early “training” for this event? Brainstorm with a group of friends who share your passion for a local 501c3 charity (a die-hard passion for basketball doesn’t hurt either) and start really studying the teams. Who are the favorites, what are their strengths and weaknesses, who could be the Cinderella story this year? Develop your strategy and plan to attend the Buster where your strategy just might win big for your favorite charity! Look for more details in your New Year issue of Signals!

Financial Growth & Investing in our Members Positioning the Club for Future Success By Shawn Smith, CPA, CMA, Chief Financial Officer Interim Chief Executive Officer

Membership Dues are the major source of the Club’s revenue and account for approximately 49% of all income received annually. Our membership is truly the lifeblood of the Club and as operating income has been stabilizing over the past few years, membership losses have also been decreasing. The Club ended its year with 2,562 memberships, only nine down from the prior year.

Y

In June 2015 the Club’s Board of Trustees approved a 7.0% overall dues increase for the 2016 fiscal year. Not only does this increase help to adjust for rising costs and inflation, but it also helps to support further improvements and new offerings around the Club.

Positive Operating Income

This increase also goes towards capital improvements, many of which are necessary to simply maintain the Club and keep it in proper working order. The Club’s management is working diligently to reduce any further membership losses and is pushing to see the Club end with a net positive membership year.

our Spokane Club Finance Department is pleased to produce this year-end report on the Club’s operations, financial position and future plans. It is an honor to be part of a 125-year-old organization and a pleasure to share in its successes and help shape its future direction. It is our members who make this Club the wonderful place it is and we need to invest back into member facilities, programs and services to ensure the Club retains its status in our community today and for our future generations.

While the Club continues to recover from prior financial challenges, we are happy to report that the Club’s fiscal year ending June 30, 2015 produced positive results. With another annual audit behind us, the Club concluded with Operating Income of $355,000. While these results are down from 2014’s $612,000, it is important to note that this difference comes from a larger effort to improve the member experience through better offerings and service. However, the Club has budgeted for increased operating income in its 2016 fiscal year, which will be accomplished through higher dues revenue and decreased departmental costs.

The significance of membership dues can be further illustrated by the pie chart on page 19. Revenue remained consistent year-over-year with the exception of the Hotel, which increased one percentage due to improved occupancy over the prior year.

The Club has budgeted for a breakeven cash flow year to finish with $1.5 million in cash by June 30, 2016.

Shoulders 101

By Christine Cronin, PT

F

irst, let me start off by saying there is no such thing as a “rotary cup”. The term is rotator cuff, and it is a reference to four small muscles that provide stability to the shoulder, especially with overhead motion. When people say they tore their “rotator cuff ” they most likely did not tear all four tendons (this is the strong piece of collagen fiber that comes off of the muscle and anchors it to the bone), and it does not always require surgery. A rotator cuff injury is only one of the many reasons you might have shoulder pain. The shoulder is an amazing thing! It is by far the most mobile joint in our body, but that mobility comes with a price: instability. When people think of the shoulder, they are usually thinking of the glenohumeral joint (GH). This is where the glenoid (part of the scapula or shoulder blade) and the head of the humerus (long bone in your upper arm) meet. The glenoid is the area where the head of humerus,

which is like a ball, sits. The glenoid has been compared to a golf ball on a tee--and how many people have knocked a golf ball off of a tee? Fortunately for us, we are not relying solely on the bony congruency of this joint but have tendons, ligaments and muscles surrounding the joint that provide us with stability. If I only told you about the GH joint though, we would be missing a giant piece of the shoulder puzzle, and a puzzle it is. The shoulder blade or scapula that sits on your thoracic spine has to move too,

Please join Christine Cronin and Cyndi Slizza for an informative shoulder presentation, followed by an exercise workshop on Tuesday, November 17. See page 35 for full details.

in order for you to have full motion of your arm. If the scapula does not move, or the surface it’s moving over (thoracic spine/ribs) is in poor position, you have a problem. Try this: Sit with really poor slouching posture and try to raise your arm up overhead as far as possible. Now, sit with perfect military posture and raise your arm up overhead. By improving posture, you can improve shoulder mobility. Besides problems with the rotator cuff, another often diagnosed problem is impingement syndrome. It’s really just a fancy word that means something is getting pinched. It’s easy to see how something might be getting pinched if we have poor posture and weak muscles. Just like we require coordination to throw a ball or avoid obstacles, the shoulder muscles need to coordinate their movements to produce the correct motion that avoids any of the rubbing or “pinching” of impingement. There are 17 muscles that attach to the shoulder blade, and affect the movement of your upper arm. If you are not focusing on strengthening and mobility of these muscles you are missing a big piece of injury prevention for your shoulders. I’m not going to bother you with more details about two other joints that affect your shoulder movement so as not to thoroughly confuse you. Just know this, there are a lot of simple strengthening, flexibility and postural exercises that can reduce or eliminate shoulder pain. Come learn more about the shoulder and important flexibility, strengthening and stabilization exercises with Cyndi Slizza and me at our shoulder workshop. www.spokaneclub.org | November/December 2015 | 31

Group Fitness Classes Update By Melissa Elfering, Sports and Fitness Director

W

ith over 75 group fitness classes a week, the Spokane Club strives to meet members’ diverse needs, interests and fitness levels. Still, feedback from some of our members indicates that our schedule lacks what they are looking for. This is where we need your help. Starting in November, we will have a form available at the Sport Shop Desk that that you can fill out to request new activity offerings. The Athletics Team will respond to your request within two weeks of the time you submit your form, offering a detailed plan on how your suggested activity can be offered at the Club and appear on the schedule in the closest next issue of Signals.

Depending on what the interest or activity is, we may suggest that the activity you are recommending can be a class addition to the group fitness schedule, or a small group training session with an instructor, or a specialized class or workshop. The success of whatever option that is decided on, will depend on members to motivate other members to participate. If it is an interest of yours, most likely other members have the same interest, so we encourage you to provide your feedback. Low-attended group fitness classes are another area needing member involvement. Member participation defines both the category and the success of a group fitness class. Group fitness classes

32 . Signals | The Spokane Club magazine | November/December 2015

rely on many individuals to participate in the class to build energy, group camaraderie and excitement that makes these classes fun to attend. Fitness classes with smaller numbers of attendance (an average of 4 members or less) can still be great, but this participation level is really a small group private training session, rather than a group fitness class. The small group private training session allows participants in the class to get more specialized attention in the activity and tailor the session to meet their specific needs and goals. Classes were analyzed in September and October and we will be reaching out in November to members who fall into the small group private training category. Members that attend classes that average 4 participants or less will first be offered the opportunity to grow the numbers of class participants. If that increase does not occur, the members of the low-attending classes will be given the option to continue these classes as a small group private training session for a fee. This opportunity will occur with each of our published Group Fitness classes throughout the year. As a small group private training session, the group can customize the session to fit their interests and needs in the class. The Club will secure the instructor and space to offer this session. The creation of the group fitness schedule may not always provide exactly what you are looking for, but please know that the Athletics team continues to try to balance it all in a way that keeps the Spokane Club the special place that it is. Thank you for your feedback and participation!

Ultimate Conditioning Round 2!

with Tyler Bridges, Sports Performance Specialist

Seminar

Joint-friendly Strength Training by Tim Arndt MS, CSCS, RTSm, Tyler Bridges BS, CPT and Jean Doherty BA, CPT

Strength training is arguably the most beneficial exercise to your health and longevity, but it can be harsh on your joints if you’re not careful. This seminar will teach you the basic concepts of how to make any strength training exercise more joint-friendly. Attendees will also be offered a free 1-on-1 strength training evaluation with a personal trainer where we will help you perform your exercises using the information presented. In this seminar you will learn: • How to modify any strength training exercise to make them more joint-friendly. • How to use 2 basic concepts to maximize results and minimize risk. • How to spare your joints while equally challenging your muscles. • How strength training can actually be beneficial for joint issues like arthritis. Downtown: Wednesday, Decmber 2; 6pm; sign up at the Sport Shop desk or call 459-4571 Valley: Thursday, December 3; 6pm; sign up at the Front Desk or call 535-3554 $10 for members, $20 for guests

Winter Fitness Challenge

Mark your calendars for January 14th at 6pm for the Spokane Club Winter Fitness and Weight Loss Challenge! Once again we will be teaming up to see which team loses the highest percentage of weight and who exercises most consistently over a 6-week period. We will have lots of prizes to give away, free workout programs and nutrition guides, and another fun-filled finale. Last Spring’s challenge was a huge success with over 60 people competing and over 440 pounds lost in only 4 weeks! Look for full details coming in the next issue of Signals.

This isn’t your standard boot camp class. This new class is designed to progressively challenge you over the course of 6-weeks. That means the workouts will get more taxing with each passing week to ensure you are burning the maximum amount of calories possible. This class is limited to just 8 people which will allow Tyler to individualize the exercises for each participant and make the workouts more challenging (and fun!). Training includes a 30-minute 1-on-1 consult with Tyler and a Nutrition Guide. Sign up at the Valley Front Desk or call 535-3554 and reserve your space today! Starts November 16 Monday & Wednesday; 5:30 pm (no workout Nov 25th) $120 for 8 workouts

After School Fitness & Fun at the Valley with Tyler Bridges BS, CPT This class is designed to get kids ages 5-10 active after school instead of just going home and hanging out. This will be a 5-week program that will be filled with organized games, activities and sports. Examples of activities are: football, basketball, soccer, kick ball and some fitness drills (running, sit ups, push-ups, relay races, etc.); everything to keep your kid moving! We will change each day up to keep the kids interested and having fun. Cost: $100 for 5 weeks (10 sessions). Sign up at the Valley Front Desk or call 535-3554. Starts November 16 Monday & Wednesdays; 4:00 pm (no workout Nov 25th) $100 for 10 sessions

Team “Volt” made it to the PNW Sectionals W3.5 Finals before falling in a super close match 2-3. Standing L-R: Laura Sanford, Lynn Gardner, Gina Warmbold, Cheryl Lepper, Heather Hughes, Kay Carlsen, Heidi Rudy (captain), Dacia Murillo Kneeling L-R: Callie Adams, Janie Slater, Susan Shirzad, Cindy Alexander

USTA Sectionals Over for 2015 Spokane Club USTA teams were super engaged throughout the summer as we had over 200 members competing in USTA sectional play in Seniors, 40-and-Over, 18-and-Over, Mixed Doubles, and tri-level divisions. Although 2015 marks the last year Eastern Washington will be its own region within the section, we expect many of our teams to return to sectional play in 2016 the old-fashioned way–by going through Tri-Cities or Yakima regional play! The only league in Eastern Washington keeping a “season” is the 18-and-Over League which begins in January 2016. All other divisions will compete in weekend tournament formats to determine teams moving to sectional play. This re-formatting is an attempt to keep players competing without burning out from playing non-stop seasons. 2016 promises to be huge as teams are already forming and ready for various start dates from January through April! Good luck and hopefully we will have several club teams in nationals in 2016!

Team “Grindhouse” Wins Mixed 9.0 18+ in Yakima, headed to Sun River next July! R to l: Dawn Eliassen, Sean Hergert, Tom Griner (Captain), Claire Hanson, Anna Lambert, Lida Michaels, Dave Robins
