Business | Chairman’s message

A New Season at the Club

By Patrick DeVries, Board Chair

I

hope everyone had a great summer spending time with friends and family. Now, fall is nearly upon us and traditionally, it’s a beautiful time in Spokane. It was not too long ago that I accepted the responsibility of serving on the Spokane Club Board of Directors. Several years have now passed and I am excited and proud to serve the Club for the next year as Chairman of the Board. It has been my pleasure to serve with

2 . Signals | The Spokane Club magazine | Fall 2018

many other dedicated Club members who have all prepared me for the year ahead. Particularly, I have worked closely with Chris Bell, Past Chair, and wish to compliment him on his outstanding and committed service to the Spokane Club. If you review the accomplishments over the past year, they are significant and have poised the Club for success. We are all pleased with the progress and partnership with Club GM, John O’Connor

and the staff of the Spokane Club and management of KemperSports. There is much to be done, but John and his team is up to the task. My wife Susan and I have been members for a number of years and use the Club regularly. I work Downtown and typically use the athletic facilities and restaurant. The Valley clubhouse has been a popular spot for Susan and my daughters over the years with the pool and athletics equipment. I am truly a Spokane son. I was born and raised in Spokane and my children are the 5th generation of our family here. My grandfather owned a gas station for many years on west Riverside Avenue and I spent a great deal of my childhood around the neighborhood. Back then, the buildings were occupied by Smith Funeral Home, Elks Club, Chamber of Commerce, Red Cross, The Shriners, Our Lady of Lourdes Cathedral, and the Spokane Club and I’m happy to say that the Spokane Club is one of those great community organizations that are still here. The Annual Meeting of Members was held in the Georgian Ballroom on July 11th, 2018 and was attended by many members. As many of you know, in addition to a change of Board members and Officers, the Annual Meeting provides the opportunity for all members to hear how we are doing financially, and what’s on the horizon for the Club. Last spring we unveiled the improved and updated 1910 restaurant and removed some of the TV’s from that location. The results have been impressive as we have restored the quality dining experience many members have asked for, while still having ample opportunities to watch your favorite sports team in the bar. The menus have been, and will continue to be,

updated to make repeated visits to 1910 more interesting. Bring your family and friends if you haven’t been in for a while. Over the last year and a half we have been growing our Capital Assessment Funds so we can take care of the many issues our clubhouses face. Like any building, ongoing repairs and maintenance are a must to protect our investment and possibly avoid more serious issues. The Board of Directors has voted to use some of the Capital Funds and take on a few very necessary projects. Number 1 is Security and Life Safety. This is in the bidding and discovery process now but will include a new, secure front door for the historic Downtown clubhouse which needs to be secured after hours. Additionally, other door and window security, fire escape security, and additional cameras where needed at the Downtown clubhouse The Valley clubhouse will also be receiving new security cameras. Number 2 is the start of a Hotel Modernization program. About half of

our rooms are of exceptional quality, recently remodeled. The remaining balance of our rooms need various levels of work to bring them to similar quality and this will occur over the next 1-2 years. The Hotel has had positive financial impact to the Club, even with a small percentage being of the quality we desire. Over time the financial contribution to the Club from hotel

room rentals will be very positive. We want our members to use the hotel for friends and guests visiting, or use it for semi-permanent housing during a remodel or other projects or circumstances that make it difficult to remain in your home while work is being done Number 3 is the repair and enhancement of the entrances to both Valley and Downtown clubhouses. These are our front doors to the community and represent our Cub and both its historic and contemporary place in Spokane. For many years the wear and tear has taken its toll and a repair and enhancement project in the works will result in something all members should be proud of. This is the start of some great improvements to the Club and I hope everyone will follow our progress on these initiatives. There will be information postings to show everyone what’s in store for these Capital Projects. I am excited for the year ahead and look forward to serving the Club and its members. We have a bright and successful future on the road ahead and I thank everyone for their role in making it possible and making it happen.

Spokane Club Inn: Making Memories for Generations

By Kate Spencer, Marketing and Communications Director

M

embers know that the Spokane Club is a great place to be and to belong. But there’s another asset of the Spokane Club that’s equally rooted in hospitality and builds its own unique community: the Club hotel. The Spokane Club Inn is close to everything exciting downtown, but its location makes it feel more like a cozy nesting spot for travelers—and often, much more . With just 47 rooms, the Inn is similar to a boutique hotel but with all the amenities of a larger one: a great restaurant and bar, a grab-and-go deli, barber and beauty shop, terrific conditioning room, spacious pool, Club Car, and much more. A big part of that “much more” is the hospitality of our staff and the diversity of our guests, some of whom have become lifetime friends of the Club. One of them is a young girl. Nine years ago, an ecstatic couple stayed at the Spokane Club for 3 weeks waiting for the birth of their adopted daughter. When they returned to 4 . Signals | The Spokane Club magazine | Fall 2018

the Club the day after her birth, the Club staff presented the baby girl with a teddy bear, along with a beautiful greeting on the display sign in the Lobby. This June, the mother of that little girl wrote to John O’Connor, Club GM, to share their family’s story. (For privacy sake, the mother requested that names not be used.) “We wanted to thank you for 3,270 days of love from that little bear,” the mother wrote. “He has comforted our daughter EVERY night, has been surgically enhanced a few times to ensure plenty of fill, and even benefited from a BuildA-Bear beating heart, activated by touch.” This June, the little girl competed in her very first horse show and her teddy cheered her on from the girl’s backpack. That little bear was

also the first to get a big hug of appreciation. The girl carried her bear as proudly as she carried her Champion ribbon. “We have such fond memories of how we became a family sharing our first nights at your Club,” wrote the mother. “Please share our appreciation with your staff and know that those kind gestures can be so impactful.” Two other guests who stayed at the Inn and have lasting memories of good times—both older memories and brand new ones— are Jack Kennedy and Ellen Donovan. “In 1998, I, along with another attorney, Ellen Donovan, who was of Counsel to my firm, had the delight and incredible convenience of staying at the Spokane Club hotel while we tried a case for two weeks in Federal District Court, steps away from the Spokane Club.” Jack stayed in the Presidential Suite, which served as his and Ellen’s command center/war room. Ellen stayed across the hall, often passing Jack notes under the door as a trial insight struck her in the middle of a long night of trial prep.

Ellen Donovan and Jack Kennedy

“Ellen is an extraordinary woman who among other accomplishments, graduated along with Anthony Scalia from Harvard Law School at a time when few women did,” says Jack. “She has a heart of gold and a love for all things Irish.” She also developed a love of the Spokane Club staff and hotel. “The staff of the Club went out of their way to extend to us every assistance and courtesy,” recalls Jack. “So smitten with the Club’s hospitality was Ellen, that she purchased a memento of her stay. It was a Green T-Shirt from the Club store.” All these years later, that T-shirt is still with Ellen. Her husband John wears it when he heads out each morning for his workout. The beloved green shirt is very well worn. This summer, Ellen, who lives in Pennsylvania, turned 81 and

planned to come out to the Seattle area for one of her grandson’s graduation. Ellen let Jack, who lives in the Seattle area, know about her plans–and that’s when Jack started making some plans of his own. He and another attorney from his old law firm would get together with Ellen for a celebratory lunch and Jack would present Ellen with a brand new green Club T-shirt— and wear one himself too! Jack contacted me, the Club’s Marketing and Communications Director, to inquire if he could purchase two new green T-shirts just like the one Ellen purchased all those years ago. Unfortunately, the green T-shirts were long gone. But there were some wonderful new shirts with the current Club logo on them that were a great new addition to the Spokane Club shirt collection. I happily packed up two polo shirts and one light www.spokaneclub.org | Fall 2018 | 5

jacket—one for Ellen, one for John and one for Jack— and sent them off to Jack who was ecstatic to receive them and insisted on paying for them. I didn’t let him. At the reunion, Ellen and Jack were photographed in their new shirts. They sent us photos of the day, along with one of Ellen and Jack in their new shirts, and Ellen’s husband John in the old, stillsturdy, green one. Jack reported the highlight of the day. “We had an absolutely grand time at our celebratory lunch, made all the more grand because of the Spokane Club shirts you so graciously provided.” A few weeks ago Jack was in town for a Gonzaga graduation, one of the many Gonzaga graduations in Jack’s wife’s family history. Both the University and the Club are living legends in the couple’s life. “Gonzaga and Spokane are such special places and in driving back from the graduation ceremonies, we happened to drive by the Spokane Club and the Federal Court house and all those wonderful memories came flooding back.” Thanks to all our hotel guests of yesterday, today and tomorrow. May you visit us often and may the memories you make at the Club be sweet.

The Benefits of Social Dancing

D

id you know that social dancing offers many health benefits including everything from improved self esteem, weight loss, reduced stress and tension, improved posture and flexibility, strengthened muscles and bones, wards off dementia, builds confidence, overcomes shyness, adds romance, AND makes you smarter? It is all true! Social dancing is good for your mind, health, and your social life. The Spokane Club offers free dance lessons to its members every week. Here are 7 important benefits that every dancer can expect to receive. 1. Improved Social Life As the name suggests, social dancing will improve your social life. By joining one of our dance classes, you will meet other members all the time. Our friendly group of dancers grows with each new dance session. 2. Dancing Leads to improved Social Skills. Dance instructors have known for years that individuals learn many social skills from learning to dance. Teens learn how to properly interact with the opposite gender. Adults learn new ways to open friendly relationships and keep them going. People who have lost a loved

one, find a safe place to interact with people and avoid the loneliness they are experiencing. Everyone finds that social dancing makes it easier to communicate and interact with others. Social dancing can also help beat shyness. 3. Dancing Sharpens your mind. Social dancers find themselves making split second decisions, learning to lead patterns or follow your partner’s patterns. The skills learned by all social dancers help keep the mind sharp and active. A major study added to the growing evidence that stimulating one’s mind by dancing, can ward off Alzheimer’s disease and other dementia, much as physical exercise can keep the body fit. Dancing also increases cognitive acuity at all ages. 4. Dancing Reduces Stress. Social dancing effectively reduces the hormone associated with stress. It takes our mind off of the issues that we wrestle with and allows our mind to go on a short melodic vacation from all that bothers us. 5. Dancing Provides New Cultural Experiences. Social dancing includes many different dances that come from all different parts of the world. Each dance reflects part of the culture from where it was created. By

learning the dances we learn of the cultures they represent and provide us with a better understanding of societies around the world. Not only will you discover new aspects of the different cultures - you will also find new cultural experience as you meet new people. 6. Dancing Improves Your Outlook The health advantages of social dance, in turn, create a better outlook on life and daily moods. Dancers often experience a more positive outlook on life, in general. Dancing can be an excellent mood booster. Dancing also increases blood flow to the brain, slowing down cognitive decline as we age. 7. Dancing Builds Strength. The more time you spend dancing, the more strength you will build. Depending on the dances you select, you will build different parts of your body. Dont underestimate the power of dance as an exercise workout. The muscle exertion and breathing rates of dancers can be compared to that of other sports such as swimming, cycling and running. At the beginning level of each of those sports, the effects are the same as the beginning level of dancing. At the competitive level of dance, the breathing and cardio rates equal and sometimes surpass even that of an Olympic 800 meter runner. But dancing is more fun! Consider giving dance a try, and let these benefits inspire you to follow through with that goal. Try dance and see how it benefits you in your personal life. You wont regret it. The Spokane Club offers beginning lessons every Thursday night at 6:45 and 7:30. No partner is necessary since we all dance with each other anyway. There is no charge to Spokane Club members. THAT is a value that you wont find anywhere other than the Spokane Club. www.spokaneclub.org | Fall 2018 | 15

Lessons Learned in the Gym

By Christine Cronin, PT “Help” I said, and he did. I could not get the last repetition on my own. I am not good at asking for help, but realized in the last year if I am to reach even greater heights in the gym, and in life, help is exactly what I will need. For me to speak those words out loud is challenging, “help.” I am the giver of help, the encourager, the healer of the injured and to ask for help is a bit of a role reversal I’m trusting in, instead of running from. This place has taught me many lessons, but the ones I value most are learning how to ask for help, trusting in another, and the magic that can happen when you connect with people and share your gifts. I have learned more at the Spokane Club about life and grown in ways I never imagined. Starting as a newly married woman here over 8 years ago and then adding three lives to the world. I became a mother here, learned the value of community, made life-long friends, found strength again and got to believe in Super 24 . Signals | The Spokane Club magazine | Fall 2018

Heroes. My life will never change as rapidly as it has over the last 8 years here at the Club. In order to grow stronger I had to stress my body beyond it’s normal capacity. This is not usually comfortable. I’m trying to be more comfortable with discomfort, knowing that if it’s the way I can grow stronger in the gym, it may be a key to growing in other ways too. I’ve learned that everyone needs consistency and yet we take it for granted more than anything else. It’s often when consistency doesn’t show up that we notice just how much we had come to rely on it. When I think of the people at the gym, there are some incredibly consistent people, positive, present and working hard from Doug and Anne Marie in the sports shop to the gym members, to Ed, who I always called anytime I needed help fixing anything. I challenge you to learn the name of one person you regularly see, and if you notice something they’ve done well, take it a step further and offer your

encouragement. Please don’t wait for the day they don’t show up to finally notice how much of an example they have been for you. Above all else I’ve been reminded of the importance of team. When surrounded by the people who inspire, encourage and support me I’m capable of outcomes I never dreamed possible. In the gym, that person there to spot you allows you the safety net to dare greater than you would have on your own. In life, that person may be the key to elevating you to the next level. Find your team, the people who inspire you, the ones you might aspire to be like and watch as everyone becomes something more when working together. Asking for help, consistency, encouragement, teamwork and strength, the gym has given me many gifts. Life has pushed me in challenging ways lately, family illness, death of a loved one and the mother of 3 young children. It is the gym that reminds me I am capable of more than I ever dreamed if I’m willing to ask for help, trust, work hard, show up and be a part of a great team. The challenge is to meet someone new, encourage someone who inspires you, and find your team. This place and it’s people are dear to my heart, and have inspired me to go pursue something bigger. I will be stepping away from patient treatment this fall and a great PT named Andrew Wallace will be taking my place. It is time to be more involved in the raising of children, to take the lessons I have learned and spread them. I will be piloting a wellness program at St. Aloysius School which my children attend this fall. It is my hope that I can create a reproducible curriculum that could be utilized in any school, anywhere. Thank you for sharing your stories and trusting me with your care. Each of you has left an imprint on my heart and I will take your lessons learned and pay it forward.

Personal Bests with Personal Training Kate Spencer, Marketing and Communications Director

I

f there’s a mountain you want to climb, personal training is your Sherpa. Like the famed mountain guides of the Himalayas, personal trainers don’t climb the mountain for you, they climb it with you. Personal trainers give you the tools, guidance, encouragement, band aid and bandwidth to discover, claim and be your personal best. While physical strength, endurance and agility are all part of the gains, inner strength—that true grit of a human being who rises to the occasions of their life with courage, commitment and hope—personal training starts in the mind. Transcending mindsets while transforming muscles is the heart of personal training and nobody does it better than the Spokane Club. Here, in their own words, some of our top personal trainers share their philosophy, and love, of the work they do and the people they do it with. Like good Sherpas, they lead by example and with a surefooted, steady vision of the mountains we can all climb if we set our sights on becoming our best selves, living our best lives.

My Motto: Fitness is simple, it’s just not easy!

My Motto: Effectively evolve efficiency and don’t forget to play

What I have to offer: With over 10 years in the fitness industry as a personal trainer I have years of experience helping people learn to enjoy exercise and get in the best shape of their life. But it doesn’t stop there. I am constantly expanding and improving my knowledge base to ensure my clients are getting the best scientifically backed training in the industry.

What I have to offer: I want to hear your goals and your concerns with your current state of health and fitness. We can sit down and gather goals and start a game plan. I want to help you create something that fits best with your goals and has you moving better in day to day life. I also want you leaving feeling energized and better than when we started and not constantly recovering from the last session. I’m also a big believer in laughing and enjoying ourselves so I help clients treat body movement as play; keeping it fun and entertaining. What my Club clients say about me: I have been a member of the Spokane Club for 21 years. I never hired a personal trainer before hiring Cody. He is clever at designing a workout plan for me that is efficient and requires less time than I imagined. Cody is always laser focused on my execution of the exercises he deems most productive. Louder than words, his training methods ensure that I go beyond my best. My health and future, in great part, depend on what I do today. Hiring Cody is a huge investment in me. He is MY advantage. – Bernie Brown

What my clients say about me: One of the first things that most trainers have told me is, work out more, eat less. Being encouraged to rest, work out less, and not having to be so crazy obsessive about restricting calories is refreshing. Plus, I often feel energized and ready for the day after our workouts. I appreciate the time and attention Tim gives me during my sessions. I really feel like when we are training that he is 100% focused on me. – Courtney Stolp

It’s rather simple - one just needs to move! Whether you like to run, or bike, or do your own thing, I can challenge you to achieve your maximum results. What my clients say about me: Oksana exudes positive energy; she’s always friendly and cheerful. And yet she takes her job very seriously. She will ensure that each session will improve one’s conditioning; nobody’s time will be wasted. Just as important, she considers the whole person in her training. You will feel better in your body and soul after each session with Oksana. – Collins Sprague

2018 Summer Tennis Camp Participation Smashes Records! Over 280 kid and adult tennis players jumped into our summer tennis camps this year demolishing the old mark of 203 set only three years ago! The decision to move summer day campers from Downtown to the Valley, coupled with offering those campers a 15% discount to play tennis, definitely added to the increase; however, Adult, High School and Tweener groups hit it hard every session with a solid 45% repeat rate. Director of Tennis, Jeff Urie sums it up this way, “We love having lots of players coming to our tennis camps but we REALLY love it when they want to come back again and again. It means WE ARE DOING SOMETHING RIGHT.” If you missed out on the summer camps, and you don’t want to wait until next summer, we will offer some tennis 101 classes throughout the year as well a 2-3 day winter camp over the holiday school break. The inaugural Coaches Awards have gone out this year and they have been a smash with our Tweeners. These trophies are presented to campers who compete, listen to directions, treat others fairly, and display all-around good citizenship! Sam Miller, Izzy Hydza, Sophia Dibble, Mia Tombari, and Oliver Ling have all earned the award thus far. Keep up the great work guys! 30 . Signals | The Spokane Club magazine | Fall 2018

Halloween Cupcake Decorating (Ages 4 – 12) We will be making a fun Halloween themed cupcake to eat and one to take home (unless we eat that too!) This class will be divided by age group so the younger ones can have a simpler project to make and we can have a more complex one for the older kids. Reservations are required 48 hours in advance. Call or email Tracey at 459-4571 x515 or tkauffman@spokaneclub.org. Friday, October 26; 5:00 – 6:30 pm $7 per child

Kids Camps (ages 5 and up) Our camps are a great place for kids to have a fun filled day of activities. We have arts and crafts projects, gym and court time, swimming, and lots of good times! The kids will make new friends and catch up with old friends. Lunch is not provided but may be ordered from the Deli or you may bring a sack lunch. NO PEANUT PRODUCTS. Camps are held at our Valley location. Email Tracey at tkauffman@spokaneclub. org to sign up. Limited space is available so sign up early!
