WHaT LaNGUaGE DO We SPeAK?

Switzerland is both unusual and fortunate in having 4 official languages which are, in order of the number of speakers, German, French, Italian and Romansch. What's more, Sierre lies exactly on the linguistic boundary between French-speaking western Valais and the German-speaking eastern part. This boundary is marked by the Raspille, a small stream running between Sierre and Salgesch. So don't be surprised when you see that several places have two names. For example, Sierre is Siders in German, and Salgesch is Salquenen in French.

Before tasting the wine, you need to follow the paths among the vines if you want to really understand something of this little corner of the country. It's a land of tradition, whose soul takes time and patience to discover. An intense moment in which to look closely at a vine and grasp its intimate relationships with its environment, or to be still and contemplate the landscape. A walk that becomes a quest for radiant beauty, for walls steeped in history, for meetings with real wine-growers who nurture the grapes that will produce good wine.

THE PLEaSURES OF WINe

This wine of our homeland, this wine from Valais – it slips down the throat like a gorgeous nectar, making life itself taste more lovely. A path of life with celestial ambitions that Rainer Maria Rilke described so well: "A Path that, like a scarf in the wind, in the clear space of this lovely land, winding through the vines, above the old towers and the hills, climbs toward the heavens".

GUY LOYE

In Vino Veritas – Marche des Cépages (vineyard walk)

When you know this very special terroir (even if yours is not the soul of a poet), you will finally appreciate life's pleasures, glass in hand. Santé!

WINe, a WaY OF LIFE - AN INCREDIBLE DIVERSITY -

Wine is far more than just something to attract visitors – it's a way of life, an everyday pleasure. So it's quite natural that, over time, the Sierre region has developed a host of offers related to this subject. In museums, wine is a cultural feature; on footpaths, it's an educational topic; but in cellars, wine shops, cafés and restaurants, it's simply a pleasure. When you taste our wines, their diversity will amaze you. There are more than 60 grape varieties in Valais, whose names are as evocative as they are mysterious. Among the whites, there's Petite Arvine, Fendant, Amigne, Ermitage and Païen, while the red varieties include Humagne Rouge, Cornalin, Gamay, Pinot Noir and Syrah. And those are just a few!

age-old relationship with her. Her generosity is boundless. She gives us everything. We drink good wines and delicious fruit juices. We eat superb local products. We can even clothe ourselves thanks to her. All over the world, we admire her for her oases of beauty, for landscapes that revitalise us – again and again.

Mountains that inspire bold climbers and casual strollers alike with their mesmerising beauty. A sunrise over the glacier at La Plaine Morte when time stands still and the heart fills with joy. A rainbow after a storm in the Pfyn Forest. The colour of vines in autumn, along a bisse. A waterfall in bright sunlight. It's Nature that gives us strength, revives our innermost being. She offers us a simple happiness. It's up to us to seize it because, as the famous Swiss physician and alchemist Paracelsus said, "It is not Nature that needs mankind, but mankind that needs Nature".

This little resort lies among hills and vineyards and is just 15 minutes' walk from the centre of Sierre. With its lake and swimming pools, it's a superb place to relax and enjoy yourself. The nearby Petits Lacs are definitely among the most magical spots in the whole area.

Lac de la Brèche & Lac de la Corne, timeless beauty Ideally situated between Sierre and Sion, next to Sierre Golf Club, these two lakes are little hidden gems. The former is famous for its beautiful scenery, the latter because it is a nationally-important breeding site for amphibians.

Pouta-Fontana, a haven for wildlife The 32-hectare Pouta-Fontana nature reserve is the largest area of wetland in Valais. It consists of several small lakes fringed with reed beds, and of channels, marshes and riparian forests. Approximately 190 bird species have been seen in the reserve, and it continues to be the main breeding site for beavers in Valais.

What if I took the time? Free time. Stepped aside, took a little break …

a HISTORY OF TIMe

I'd let my childhood heart guide my adult feet. I'd go and lose myself among the shady paths in the Pfyn Forest, I'd listen, see, feel the natural world to be in exactly the right place and myself to be delightfully tiny. I'd stop to flutter my fingers in the tranquil

K ATIA CL AVIEN

waters of its pools. I'd watch the insects,

La Cerise sur le Gâteau

the frogs, the birds, I'd listen to their calls, their songs, and the silence. I'd go to the gardens at the Château Mercier, sit on a bench and gaze at the building and at the town below. I'd remember how, when I was little, I used to sit on the bronze dogs by the fountain, how I used to shudder at the idea of entering the little grotto, and roam the paths as if they were secret and full of mysteries. I'd go – definitely – to tell my children stories and show them these forever places, I'd go with them, go like them, to be filled with wonder, to run, and to laugh.

I love to be active and I'm passionate about sport, so what more could a woman like me want than to live in a region where sport is synonymous with freedom, pleasure, and pride?

Yes, sport, at whatever level, is part of daily

FANNY CLAVIEN

sporting talent, but what has influenced me

life for everybody. So I could talk to you at length about how our region believes in and supports sportspeople, how everyone feels a great sense of pride when they see someone local performing

most, and still does, is a world away from all that competition. My greatest arena is right here in this region, with its power, its gentleness and its diversity. I was born in these mountains and still live among them, and sport isn't just for athletes here, it's part of our culture. In fact, I think that here, people tend to associate a completely different value with the word ‘sport’: sharing. We enjoy sport with family, with friends, or just alone in the great outdoors, among these peaceful but sometimes fast-changing landscapes. Whether they walk or cycle, play tennis, go skiing, hiking, swimming, paragliding, fencing, riding or even practise karate, everyone enjoys and can enjoy this small (or great) pleasure in their own way. I think quite a lot of people here get hooked on sport at an early age. Maybe there's something in the water!

HISTORIC BUILDINGS aND MUSeUMS - EACH HAS A (HI)STORY -

Sierre is full of interesting buildings. Here are just a few examples, by quartier (district): in the quartier du Bourg, there's the town hall (Hôtel de Ville), the Château des Vidômes (15th century), the church of St Catherine, and the Maison de Courten. In the quartier de Tservetta, you can visit the 15th-century church of Notre Dame des Marais and the Maison du Remuage. The quartier de Muraz contains the Château Mercier. The quartier de Villa has the Chapelle de Saint-Ginier and the Château de Villa (16th century), and in the quartier de Géronde there's the Colline de Géronde convent.

Ho! GOT AN HOUR TO SPARe? The Tourist Office has devised a heritage trail that takes you through the different quartiers, so you can see most of these buildings for yourself. Ask for the free leaflet.

INTeReSTeD IN HISTORY? We

guided

tours

(on request) of the different quartiers, and of most of the places mentioned in this brochure. Please ask us for further details.

INCReDIBLe BUT TRUe! It's possible to visit some very unlikely-sounding places in the local area: a collection of bicycles, stringed instruments or old gondola lifts ‌ a mediaeval quartier, an aluminium works, a restored company welfare centre dating from 1909. Ask at the Tourist Office to find out more.
