A LETTER FROM SIEDC’S PRESIDENT & CEO Dear SIEDC Supporters, We would like to thank you for your continued support of SIEDC during what we believe is the greatest time to be in economic development on Staten Island. This year we helped more than 3,000 businesses and launched three new incubator programs to help start-ups and entrepreneurs, providing them with space on the South Shore and North Shore, as well as complimentary mentoring services through our virtual incubator, GrowSI. We selected Leitner-Poma of America as the winner of our aerial gondola design competition which is leading the way in innovative transportation ideas for New York City. We established the Public Private Partnership Committee, exploring the development of a new industrial park on Staten Island. We expanded our neighborhood development work which now includes New Dorp, Richmond Valley, Richmond Road, Richmond Terrace, Huguenot and the West Shore of Staten Island. And, among our proudest accomplishments in recent memory: we successfully secured a commitment for the MTA to complete a feasibility study for the West Shore rail line. These projects among many others have been the result of strong planning, hard work and your involvement and support. We are grateful for your continued participation which is essential to our success.

New York Fragrance has SIEDC’s Flag Flying High! On September 14th, SIEDC raised a decorative flag bearing its logo at a ceremony held at the 20,000 square foot New York Fragrance Warehouse located at 600 Gulf Avenue. This represents the fifth flag in a series of flag raisings at locations around the borough where the organization has had some involvement in supporting the development of that project. When SIEDC Board Member Ram Cherukuri of New York Fragrance was considering expanding his operation, SIEDC worked with him to secure a space on Gulf Avenue within the West Shore Business Improvement District for an office/warehouse facility. SIEDC has helped the project by expediting Con Edison and National Grid installations, the potential two-way conversion of Gulf Avenue and numerous issues with the New York City Department of Transportation. The building plays a critical role in the continued development of Gulf Avenue and the West Shore BID. New York Fragrance distributes over 1,200 fragrance products from perfume to cologne to gift sets to hair and skin products. Their website www.American Fragrance.com currently supplies Amazon, E-Bay, and other popular internet sites. Previous flag raisings have taken place at Indoor Extreme Sports, also located in the West Shore BID, at ADCO Electric, at the Vanderbilt at South Beach and at Pratt Industries. Additional flags will appear in the coming months at other projects around the borough. THE RICHMOND VALLEY MERCHANTS ASSOCIATION HAS HAD A SUCCESSFUL YEAR After the highly successful “Taste of the Valley Food Festival” at Conference House Park in June, the Richmond Valley Merchants Association (RVMA) continues to succeed at recruiting new and interested local merchants and property owners to its membership. The RVMA has doubled in size and was recently bolstered by Councilman Joseph Borelli with a grant through the New York City Department of Small Business Services Neighborhood Development Grant Initiative. The RVMA will utilize the funding to provide marketing, beautification and installation of four welcome signs in Richmond Valley. Additionally, the RVMA was recently incorporated pro bono thanks to SIEDC member, Brian Lincer, of the Internicola Law Firm. The merchants association fundraised to install holiday lights on Page Avenue, Arthur Kill Road, Veterans Road West and Ellis Street for the second year in a row. The SIEDC and RVMA is proud to bring the holiday spirit to both the residential and merchant community of Richmond Valley, Charleston and Tottenville.

New to the district are four large ”Welcome to the West Shore BID” signs placed at key locations: Edward Curry Avenue & Chelsea Road, NY Fragrance (600 Gulf Avenue), J. Bruno & Sons (280 Meredith Avenue), and Indoor Extreme Sports (501 Industry Road). In October, the BID began a long-term beautification effort, working with volunteers from Person Centered Care Services of New York (PCCS-NY). An update on the Richmond Terrace Commercial Development Corporation

The Richmond Terrace Commercial Development Corporation (RTCDC) has come a long way since its inception in June of 2015. The RTCDC has recently received its 501c3 not-for-profit status and is adding new members to the Steering Committee to enhance the diversity of local representation. Recently, Kevin Bryant and his team at Person Cared Centered Services (PCCS) was unanimously elected to the Steering Committee for his outstanding outreach service to the RTCDC and community at large. The RTCDC also built a productive relationship with Transportation Alternatives. The SIEDC, RTCDC and Transportation Alternatives are advocating for a “Transportation Improvement Strategy study for the western portion of Richmond Terrace between Port Richmond Avenue and Western Avenue. The Department of Transportation led study will examine existing transportation conditions and projected growth, consider alternatives, and produce short-term, mid-term, and long-term recommendations to address transit concerns to the City of New York.

SIEDC expanded its neighborhood development to Huguenot The newly formed Huguenot Merchants Association (HMA) has recently put together a Steering Committee of local merchants and property owners. In early 2016, Councilman Joe Borelli awarded the SIEDC grant to install pole banners, welcome signs and flowerpots on Huguenot Avenue. Additionally, the SIEDC implemented area beautification services to remove excess litter and maintain tree pits. Spurred on by the success and popularity of the amenities provided by SIEDC, Councilman Borelli awarded the HMA an additional grant to begin formal merchant organizing activities. Recently, the HMA held its first Steering Committee meeting at Otterbeck Law Firm with SIEDC and Councilman Borelli’s representative. The Steering Committee committed to fundraising for holiday lights installation on Huguenot Avenue and Amboy Road. In just under two weeks, the SIEDC raised the funds necessary to bring the holiday spirit to Huguenot Avenue.

Two ”Welcome to Huguenot” signs have been installed at key entry points

SIEDC is working to create a new industrial park on Staten Island SIEDC has long called for a publically subsidized industrial park to be built in the borough which would offer affordable, modern and regionally competitive space. In response to the release of the New York City Economic Development Corporation’s Industrial Developer Fund (IDF), SIEDC has assembled a development team that is committed to creating the Staten Island Urban Industry Campus and providing an unprecedented opportunity for industrial business on Staten Island. The proposed project will create an industrial park on a currently vacant 15-acre parcel in Charleston with a build-out which is anticipated to be approximately 245,000 square feet consisting of twelve 20,000 square foot buildings. A decision on the approval of the project by the City of New York is expected by the end of the year. SIEDC would like to thank SIEDC members Peter Van den Kooy of Matrix New World Engineering and Paul Rotondi of Galli Engineering for Concept Rendering

providing pro-bono engineering and design services.

Bank of America has granted us funding towards an employment study At no other time in Staten Island’s history has there been an expectation that the job market will grow so immensely as right now. Thanks to the large scale developments both planned and under construction, over 9,000 new positions are predicted to be created between 2016 and 2020. The over $1 billion in new investment across the borough may increase employment by upwards of 6% and to effectively connect businesses and potential employees, SIEDC is working to launch the SI Works program. Currently funded by a grant from the Bank of America Foundation, SIEDC has hired the consulting firm Public Works Partners to create a business and employment survey, meet with local firms and develop a plan to launch the SI Works program and better connect the community to jobs. The study will be conducted over the next six months and SIEDC is excited to have an opportunity to potentially expand our suite of services to employment and job placement. The program provides firms with free services such as navigating government, incentives, training programs and financing assistance. In 2016 in its navigational capacity, SIEDC has helped resolve over 70 governmental issues, ranging from destroyed bus stops to issues with property tax bills. SIEDC has also helped industrial businesses access 20 industrial incentives including helping a company apply for the Energy Cost Savings Program which helps the business owner save money on their electric and gas bills. SIEDC has helped multiple industrial businesses secure around a total of $7 million dollars in loans to fund projects like the creation of new buildings and the acquisition of property.
