To help you get the most out of each issue, therepubliq magazine is now interactive! Most articles in each issue of the magazine are also available on our website. Select articles now include a QR code at the top of the page that links directly to the story on the website, complete with links and media. No more trying to enter in URL addresses on your phone. CHENOWETH HEADLINEs LONG CENTER’S 5th Anniversary purPle party Rob Faubion

After hosting Broadway and television star Idina Menzel earlier this season, The Long Center for the Performing Arts brings her Wicked and Glee co-star Kristin Chenoweth to Austin to headline the Center’s 5th Anniversary Party. The star of stage, television and film will perform in concert for The Purple Party 5 on Saturday, April 6, starting at 8 PM. Chenoweth won a Tony Award for her performance in You’re A Good Man, Charlie Brown, but she is most identified with her Broadway star turn when she originated the role of “Glinda” in Wicked, which earned her a leading actress Tony Award nomination. Her critically-acclaimed performance as “Olive Snook” in the ABC series Pushing Daisies won her an Emmy Award for “Best Supporting Actress in a Comedy Series,” and her guest appearance on Fox’s comedy Glee earned her two Emmy Award nominations and a People’s Choice Award for “Favorite TV Guest Star.” Chenoweth also starred on the hit television shows The West Wing, The Good Wife and GCB, and she served as a guest judged on American Idol. The Oklahoma native has been a vocal supporter of LGBT rights, in addition to being a devout Christian. In a recent interview with The Advocate, she stated “I read

002-201304.indd 8

my Bible and I pray and all of that. I really do. But at the same time, I don’t think being gay is a sin. Period.” On Valentine’s Day this year, Chenoweth took to Twitter and proclaimed on that her Valentine’s wish was that all the gays could get married. In a 2011 interview with CNN’s Pier Morgan, Chenoweth said “I don’t think the gay issue is a political one, but I do think it’s a civil rights issue. I believe...people who love each other should be allowed to be married.” “If it was a sin to be short, what would I do? Well I’d be right on the hell bus,” the 4’11” entertainer stated. “I don’t believe God makes mistakes, and that includes a person’s sexuality.” Following Chenoweth’s concert performance, The Purple Party 5 will continue on the Long Center City Terrace, featuring the Matt Wilson Band. The homegrown crooner wowed sold out audiences across the country as the “Piano Man” in the First National Tour of Billy Joel and Twyla Tharp’s Tony Award-winning musical Movin’ Out, and has been a staple of the Austin music scene for several years. Tickets for Kristin Chenoweth – which include the After Party – are $50 and are available by calling (512) 474LONG (5664) and online at www.TheLongCenter.org.

The national tour of Million Dollar Quartet / photo credit: Paul Natkin

austin on stage: fast forward Rob Faubion

The national Broadway tour of the Tony Award-winning musical Million Dollar Quartet rocks into Bass Concert Hall for eight performances from April 9 through 14. Part of the 2012-13 Broadway Across America - Austin series, the hit musical - set on December 4, 1956 - dramatizes the auspicious twist of fate when Sam Phillips, the “Father of Rock ‘n’ Roll,” brought legendary musicians Johnny Cash, Jerry Lee Lewis, Carl Perkins and Elvis Presley together at the Sun Records storefront studio in Memphis for the first and only time. The resulting evening became known as one of the greatest rock ‘n’ roll jam sessions in history. That legendary night became a tale of broken promises, secrets, betrayal and celebrations featuring an eclectic score of rock, gospel, R&B and country hits including “Blue Suede Shoes,” “Fever,” “Sixteen Tons,” “Who Do You Love?,” “Great Balls of Fire,” “Matchbox,” “Folsom Prison Blues,” “Whole Lotta Shakin’ Goin’ On,” “Hound Dog” and more. Tickets for Million Dollar Quartet start at $25 and are available at the Bass Concert Hall box office, all Texas Box Office Outlets, by phone at (512) 477-6060 and online at www.BroadwayInAustin.com. ZACH Theatre debuts the world premiere of Steven Dietz’s new play Mad Beat Hip & Gone, playing April 3 through 28 in the new Topfer Theatre, including the LGBT Wilde Party with pre-show mixer on Thurs10

day, April 4. One of the most-produced playwrights in America - who also calls Austin home - Dietz weaves clever story-telling with live jazz music for an original coming-of-age comedy about two young men who follow legendary beat writers Jack Kerouac and Neal Cassady as they famously go “on the road.” Tickets range from $25 to $65 and are available by calling (512) 476-0541 ext. 1, or online at www.zachtheatre.org. Speaking of live jazz, the Capital City Men’s Chorus closes their 24th Season by “Puttin’ on the Ritz” with The Big Band Theory on Saturday, April 13 at 7:30 PM. Under the direction of Artistic Director Dr. Jeffrey Jones-Ragona, the concert features great jazz and swing standards delivered by the 50-voice chorus, which remains Austin’s premier men’s chorus after almost a quarter-century of continuous annual performances. The concert plays the new McCallum Fine Arts Academy Theatre at 5600 Sunshine Drive, and tickets are $20 in advance and $25 at the door. For additional information and advance tickets, call (512) 477-SING (7464) or visit online at www.CCMCAustin.org. chase@therepubliq.com | @chaseinaustin SXSW is one of those events that I both love and hate all at the same time. With so much going on, its nearly impossible for me to make even a fraction of the events I want to attend. therepubliq teamed up with the Austin Gay & Lesbian Chamber of Commerce on Friday, March 8 to host the #BigGay Kickoff Party during SXSW. It was also the drop party for both therepubliq magazine and The Agenda, the Chamber’s magazine produced in coordination with the Austin Chronicle. On Saturday, March 9, The OUTlander Project and One More Lesbian and Tello Films teamed up to host a showcase featuring web series from filmmakers from around the US. The showcase also featured a live performance by God-Des & She. I pretty much spent all of my time during SXSW at the OUTlander Spring Music Festival at Rusty’s and Oilcan Harry’s. Some notables include: Kari K. who, along with her new band, the Stonewall Riot, rocked the Kickoff Showcase at Rusty’s. Will Sheridan, of basketball fame, came out of no where with a high energy, crowd moving routine, complete with backup dancers. Local singer-songwriter Mike Burns is always a treat, but his performance at OUTlander was spot on. Plus, Dane had no excuse for missing Mike’s show this time. As always, all these photos and more are available on our website and also on Flickr at www.flickr.com/therepubliq. 14

LIFE

MAKING THE FIRST MOVE It can be very intimidating to make the first move, whether on a dating website or in person. We fear being judged. Many years ago, there was a book called The Rules which stated women should never talk to men first. And though that book was released for a heterosexual audience, I think a lot of queer people have internalized that message as well. Femme lesbians may feel they shouldn’t have to make the first move when a butch is around. Or a more feminine gay guy might think that his more masculine crush should make the first move. Regardless of who you are, it is a bad idea to stand on ceremony when it comes to making the first move. If someone likes you, he will not be creeped out if you approach him first. Just the contrary: he will (or at least should) be flattered. Of course, your approach matters a lot. There are certainly ways to ick someone out with a weird approach at a bar or on a dating site. Here are some ideas of what to do and what not to do when making the first move: Don’t be stalkery. When you like someone, you may be tempted to follow her around the bar or send a hundred emails. Don’t do that. It will make you look very strange. One nicely-written email or sweet hello at a bar is all it should take to get someone’s attention. If she is not interested after that, then it wasn’t meant to be. Try to relax. Making the first move is enough to send anyone’s nerves reeling. Take a few deep breaths before 22

002-201304.indd 22

approaching your crush, or before sending out an email. If you appear too nervous, it may lower your chances of attracting that person. Don’t be too overly familiar. Being flirtatious is one thing, but invading someone’s personal space or giving out intimate details of your life is another. Avoid touching someone’s hair or clothing when approaching them. You may think you are just being harmlessly friendly, but you may risk upsetting him. Also, and this especially applies in any place liquor is being served, do not reveal too much personal info about yourself. You don’t want to give a stranger your address or where you work, even if she or he seems lovely. And you also don’t want to tell him you used to be an alcoholic, or you have mental health issues, or anything of that sort when you first meet him. Save that for the second date at least. Don’t assume someone doesn’t like you or is out of your league. Just because someone didn’t approach you first, doesn’t mean they don’t like you. He or she could just be shy or busy. Also, don’t assume someone else is too pretty or too successful for you to date. First of all: you are probably selling yourself short. And secondly, people are attracted to all sorts. I’m sure you’ve seen plenty of people with partners who weren’t as attractive or successful as them. People fall in love with each other not always based on their job or how they look but how much fun they have together. 

Castro’s Warehouse opens up next door to Rain on 4th / photo credit: Chase Martin

Austin NIGHTLIFE CHANGES Chase Martin

chase@therepubliq.com | @chaseinaustin Apparently, Austin’s nightlife is like the weather; if you wait long enough, it’s gonna change. And boy, were there a lot of change here recently. The Warehouse District has at least two new gay bars. Austin loses its only lesbian bar.

Gone are the sharks under the dancefloor and the tacky clawfooted bathtub in the front area. Highlights include the big comfy booths, the variety of frozen cocktails behind the bar and after hours dancing to some of your favorite deejays.

Sadly, Rusty’s over on East 7th Street announced before SXSW that they would be closing their doors after St Patrick’s Day. Austin not only loses the one place you can learn to line dance with your samesex partner, but also one of the few gay bars that hosts live music on a regular basis.

Around the corner, another Yassine property has finally reopened. 404, located where Kiss & Fly used to be, opened up during SXSW. Like Kiss & Fly, expect it to be an after hours hotspot.

Down the street, Lipstick 24 announced that they would be changing for SXSW. During the festival it was revealed that the building that housed Austin’s only lesbian bar would become part of Empire, a live music venue that includes the Empire Automotive lot next door.

Just before SXSW it was announced that The Basement over on the corner of Congress Avenue and 5th Street would be closing and all the weekly shows were cancelled. A few days later they announced that they would remain open during SXSW. As of press time, we were able to confirm that they are still open, but most of the weekly shows had not been rebooked.

On the Friday that opened up SXSW Interactive, Castro’s Warehouse, swung open their gates opening up the space between 4th Street mainstays Oilcan Harry’s and Rain on 4th. Owned and staffed by several familiar faces from Rain, the bar took over the space that once housed the Yassine bar, Hyde.

Posh, over on West 4th Street at the old 219 West location, has been unofficially open since late last year, but hasn’t been approved for a liquor license yet. During SXSW, the venue removed their signage and rainbow flags. As of press time, it is unclear if they intend to open.
