In our mind, Shufflegazine is an Apple lifestyle magazine, not “just” a tech magazine. To us this means that although the magazine revolves around Apple products, third-party accessories, and more, we want to cover everything that is related to our readers’ lives, whether professional or private. This could involve connecting an iPod in your car, picking the right desk to keep your Mac on, or figuring out what ear phones to use with your iPhone at the gym. And through all of this we also want to keep our community-connections. So anyone can still publish in Shufflegazine, and now we’ll also pay you a little bit for your work. A bit surprisingly perhaps but the latest iPod nano looks very much like the first two generations of nanos. What’s different is that it’s thinner, with an oval profile, and the screen covers half of the face of the device. It has a built-in accelerometer like the iPhone and iPod Touch, so when you turn it, what you see on the screen turns too. Accelerometer is also put to use in the shuffle function, just shake the iPod and you shuffle songs. Jobs said the nano gets 24 hours battery life for music and 4 hours for video. The new nanos come in nine colors: black, purple, blue, green, yellow, orange, red, violet, and gray. Prices are $149 for the 8GB model and $199 for the 16GB model. Apple will also start selling two new headphones: One set has in-band control over volume and playback, and a mic which works with the voice recording application on the iPod. It will be available for $29. Perhaps more interesting are new in-ear headphones, with improved sound quality, which will sell for $79.

Then we move on to the iPod Touch. The Touch now is thinner than before and has a contoured steel design back. The 3.5-inch display, accelerometer, Wi-Fi and the AppStore remains the same as before. New is a volume control on the side, a speaker, and Genius playlist creation on the go. It also has a Nike+iPod receiver built in so you don’t have to attach something externally like you did before. Battery life for the new iPod Touch, according to Jobs, is 36 hours for music and 6 for video. They come in models of 8GB for $229, 16GB for $299, and a 32GB model for $399. “The funnest iPod ever”, Apple calls it, comes with software version 2.1. For owners of previous iPod Touch it is a free upgrade from 2.0, but if you haven’t yet upgraded, it’s $9.95 to 2.1 from 1.x.

Apple also introduced iTunes 8. Among the news are accessibility, a new form of browsing, and the Genius functionality. In terms of browsing you can now “scrub” over an icon of an artist and see all their albums. The Genius is really a sidebar that is there to help you “rediscover” music in your library, according to Jobs. It sounds very much like a bit of artificial intelligence applied to helping users finding and matching music in different ways. iTunes sends that information up to their systems and they will then use it to combine with information from other users to make better recommendations.

I’m the greatest Apple fan ever, and I even spend time in stores helping out and sell tons of Macs. Why are there no big events for us here? Can’t we have a Macworld Expo in Dubai? -JM Of course we could and I think we should. It’s a matter of someone taking the initiative and enough sponsors backing it. Why are there no offers for college students?

Hello, I wonder why there are no offers for college students in Middle East? I believe that would increase the number of Mac users. -OL There are some offers from Arab Business Machine, Apple’s Value Added Distributor (VAD) in the Middle East. They offer educational discounts, and they also have an online store for education (http://shop.appleme.ae/ashop/ishop.php). Since I don’t know exactly where you are located, perhaps the offers in your location are different. While we applaud these offers, we also think they should be made more widely known and expanded so more people can take advantage of them. And we agree with you, OL, that getting more active in the education sector would grow the number of Mac users. That’s a strategy that worked very well for Apple in their early days, so it should work again in our region today. -Editor

Q: My recently purchased Mac mini doesn’t seem to see any drives (flash or external HDD – both previously used on a Windows PC) when I plug a drive into its USB sockets. It just shrugs its shoulders and says “yeah well what do you want me to do?” I’m sure I’ve missed something simple. A: First thing to try is to see if the drive works on another Mac and see if some other USB device works on your mini. You should also check it with Disk Utility. If it works on another Mac, copy the data off of it, reformat it, and then it might work on the mini. Q: I recently purchased a 3G iPhone from another country which works on a Turbo Sim. I loaded the Etisalat Card with the Turbo SIM and the phone started working, but after a while I noticed
that the connectivity is no longer available and it says (on the top left corner of the screen) “No Service”. When I try looking up the phone Network and I select Automatic it does not connect, but still shows the following networks as available: Etisalat 3G, Etisalat, Du, Du 3G. What should I do? A: I don’t think there’s much you can do. This seems to be a common problem with all the SIM-card attachments for unlocking iPhone 3G. You can try to get another Turbo SIM or other similar card, but until there’s a software unlock for the new iPhone, you may not get it working as a phone unfortunately.
Q: I always leave my iPod touch plugged into my Mac all night long to recharge. Is it OK to have it plugged into a computer for such a long time, or does this practice affect its battery life?
A: You should be okay. Any such device has a limited number of recharges and good practice is to totally drain it once in a while to keep it in best possible condition. So perhaps once a week or so let it run totally out of charge, then charge it again and you should have the iPod touch run for a long time. Q: Time Machine does not find disk, although properly connected to brand new hard drive. Would you know what to do? A: You need to connect the drive to a Mac first and format it for Mac. Many times when you get a new hard drive it’s formatted in FAT32 or NTFS, and for Time Machine to work it needs to be in Mac format. Use Disk Utility to format it as Mac OS Extended (Journaled). If after that it still doesn’t seem to be recognized by the Time Machine, consider exchanging it for a new drive.

There is really not much to be said about my bag. It’s a Mont Blanc document holder really, which I’ve taken as a computer bag for my MacBook Air. It typically holds the Mac, a Mont Blanc pen, and some business cards. As an architect and designer, it’s important for me to have something stylish to take with me when I meet clients but it also needs to be light because I travel around a lot. I must confess to never having owned an iPod, nor any other MP3 player. But last month good friends of mine finally took pity and gave me the best present ever – an iPod touch. Apart from the to-be-expected “0ohs” and “Aahs” over its sleek design and cool built-in applications, it has really been a joy of discovery to find out its many uses.

The first thing you’ll be asked when you plug into iTunes is whether you want to purchase the latest upgrade through the iTunes Store. In my case it was worth the extra money as the upgraded software included the ability to connect to Microsoft Outlook at my workplace, allowing me to track email on my iPod anywhere I go within Wi-Fi range at my college campus. My Outlook calendar also magically synced to my iPod calendar at the same time this mail account was configured.

The thing I’ve enjoyed most about this device is the ability to upload holiday photos and movies via iTunes to show colleagues and friends. Expect more “0ohs” and “Aahs” when you pinch the screen to zoom in or out, pan an image, or when you initiate photo viewing in slideshow mode. However, be warned that uploading movies to your Touch may first require you to convert them into a format compatible with an iPod. This is quickly done if you have Quicktime Pro: First open it in Quicktime and choose File > Export. Then, from the Export dropdown menu, select the Movie to iPod option. Formatting will automatically commence. The Wi-Fi enabled Safari Web browser is great for checking RSS feeds. No more downtime for me in long drawn out meetings - talk about multitasking. By default the search engine is Google, but can be changed to Yahoo via the Settings application. Another word of advice: If you keep Wi-Fi permanently switched on, you’ll quickly drain the battery - requiring a recharge every day. To avoid this, go to Settings > Wi-Fi and switch the Wi-Fi option to Off when not checking email or surfing the Web. Simply reverse this procedure when you wish to reconnect to Wi-Fi again. And let’s not forget the multitude of iPod touch applications that can be downloaded from the iTunes store (many of them free of charge). This is what makes this device truly great; each day cool applications are being devised that extend your iPod touch into an even better personal digital assistant than it already is. Shufflegazine has been published since November 2006 as Shuffle by the EmiratesMac Apple User Group. Since April 2007 it was printed as the group’s official newsletter. During that time it was produced as a non-profit, voluntary-based publication. Shufflegazine picks up where Shuffle left off, with more copies and more content.

When all the text for the articles is written and all the photos and artwork collected, the design of the pages begins. The basic structure of the particular issue and what stories go on what pages is decided a long time in advance. Closer to the publishing date, the graphic profile of the magazine and the design of the issue is born.

Shufflegazine is produced by a small team. The core group consists of six people working part or full time on their particular tasks. Although a lot of the work is done online, especially writing and developing the articles, it’s all done in the region – which we feel is an important aspect of Shufflegazine. Since we’re all busy with other things besides Shufflegazine we use the internet as much as possible to communicate and coordinate our work.

Although much of our work is done online, as pages start to develop and designs are made, we print out the pages and stick them on a wall. This helps us to see the flow of the magazine and to make it easier to establish a consistent design.

The last few days before our deadline are the busiest. Usually it involves almost 24/7 work with designs, finalizing text and putting final touches to the pages. There’s a lot of proofing involved, in an attempt to find all the mistakes that might have been made.

Simply the coolest mobile ever. Apple iPhone 3G Price: Varies, currently around AED4000 in Dubai but dropping. Cons: Is not officially released in UAE, expensive data traffic.
About a year after Apple first released the iPhone onto the world, they’ve updated it with 3G and GPS. In a nutshell, that’s what’s new with iPhone 3G. In terms of physical appearance the new iPhone has a different back, it’s curved and it’s plastic (black or white). Also the headphone connection is now flush with the phone, so you can use any headphone without having a converter. Inside the new iPhone you’ll find even more new things because of the 2.x version of the iPhone software, which you can also install on the first generation iPhones.

Apple claims that the 3G speeds are at least twice as fast as the EDGE in the earlier iPhone. That pretty much holds true in our testing in Dubai, but it depends a lot on location. 3G is not available everywhere, and really high speeds can be reached only in a few places. With 3G turned off we achieved speeds of around 300kbps, whereas with 3G turned on we managed around 220kbps. Why it’s slower with 3G off puzzles us and we’re trying to work out the reason. But those are not bad speeds

for a mobile device, and this opens up new possibilities for iPhone users. Although the GPS took a little while to zero in on our position, most of the time it was as accurate as can be expected. Battery life is not great in the new iPhone. Especially if you keep push, Wi-Fi and 3G on all the time; you’ll run out of juice in less than a day. Turn those things off and you’ll make it longer. There’s no software unlock available for the new iPhones yet, so you have to rely on the SIM-card attachment method, hardware unlock, or on paying a premium for a factory unlocked iPhone. To sum up, there is little reason for owners of the original iPhones to upgrade, unless you need the faster downloads. You get all the software features anyway with the upgrade, plus you don’t have the issues of unlocking. But that said, the iPhone 3G is a wonderful mobile device and looks great. If you want the latest and greatest, there’s no doubt you’ll want the iPhone 3G.

One common complaint about the iPod touch is its short battery life. Let’s hope that Apple has improved this in the just-released second generation. Especially if you keep Wi-Fi on and with the push features in the 2.x version of the software, the touch’s battery drains very quickly.

Mophie has taken the concept from their original JuicePack for iPhone and developed a version for iPod touch. It works the same way, you slide the iPod into place in the JuicePack and it acts as an external battery, which means you can use it for a lot longer time compared to just using the internal battery. On the back of the JuicePack you find four blue lights and a button. Press the button and see the lights turn on showing you the capacity of the charge in the extra battery. Mophie claims audio playback of up to 24 hours and video playback of up to 7 hours. During the time we’ve used the JuicePack it seems those numbers are close to the actual use you will get. Also on the bottom you’ll find the headphone jack.

Unlike the iPhone, the iPod touch first generation doesn’t have speakers at the bottom so the JuicePack can fit tightly without any gap. It doesn’t add too much weight to the iPod and actually, in my hands at least, the JuicePack improves the grip I have of the iPod. Something that annoys me a bit with the JuicePack is that it has a miniUSB port on the bottom, not the usual iPod connection. This means I have to keep another type of cable around for syncing, and that’s not a good solution in my view. Another down side is that with the JuicePack attached you can’t put the iPod touch in any other case so protection is limited. If you can live with those shortcomings, and especially if you use your iPod touch extensively, the JuicePack is a very good investment.

Collaboration is where it’s at when it comes to news in Acrobat version 9. Many of the improvements are tied to the Acrobat.com web site and build on functionality there. The overall interface has changed little, but a few items have moved around and it is better organized.

With the ties to the Acrobat.com web site, it’s now possible to control what different users can do with a document: Store information in your Acrobat.com account, upload the PDF, set the access rights and you’re good to go. The form creation functionality has been improved, as has the data collection features. As someone who creates a lot of PDF forms, I appreciate the improved interface and new functionality in that area.

Combining several other PDF documents in one “container” PDF has been possible for some time, but now Adobe has really made the Portfolio functions in Acrobat cool. And it’s not just PDF files you can throw into a Portfolio. We tried Excel files, TIFF and JPEG pictures, Illustrator files, and others - and they were all included without issues. And Acrobat presents the content of a Portfolio in a very attractive manner, with different views, slick navigation, and more. The ME version doesn’t offer any particular added functionality compared to the regular Acrobat 9, but it does have a complete Arabic interface. Realistically, if you work primarily in print and design and produce PDF content that goes straight to printers, you probably don’t need to upgrade to Acrobat 9. If, on the other hand, you collaborate a lot with others using PDF files or if you create portfolios that you distribute to others online, then you should run out and get the new version as soon as you can.

When you want to cut out something in a photograph and put it on another background, how do you accomplish that? The obvious choice is the magic wand tool in Photoshop. However, this really only works on simple backgrounds and although you can work with Layer Masks to make the work a bit easier, that’s also not enough in many situations. That’s where Fluid Mask comes in. It makes the work of making a selection on a complex picture very easy. When you start the Fluid Mask plug-in from Photoshop it detects all edges in the picture, which typically gives you at least a decent start. Then you basically “paint” over various parts of the picture: with green if you want to keep that particular area, red if you don’t want to keep that area, and blue for areas or edges that need some extra attention. That’s the basic functionality, but there are lots more and you can tweak almost all the settings to achieve as good a result as possible. However, the interface and functionality take some getting used to. To sum up, if you have to do any kind of masking in complex photographs on a regular basis, Fluid Mask might just save your sanity. Well, at the very least it will save you time and give you better-looking graphics; and that’s not a bad thing.

The main program, ConceptDraw Pro, will help you draw almost any kind of model, workflow or diagram with ease. Although the interface is not as clever as OmniGraffle’s and you can do some of the same things in applications like KeyNote, for someone who needs to work extensively with these types of drawings, ConceptDraw Pro is a solid choice. And that same reasoning could be applied to MindMap and Project. They are very competent at what they do but they’re not exciting. Perhaps that has to do with their cross-platform availability, which probably means the developers cannot focus on taking maximum advantage of the Mac interface and functionality.

Recording quality is surprisingly good, including the audio. The fixed-focus lens does a good job of capturing your video and there is limited digital zoom if you need it. You see what you’re recording on the 1.5-inch LCD display and control it all with iPod-esque touch controls just below the display. This is a really easy camera to use and the quality is good. It won’t replace that expensive HD camcorder you have but it’s small and light enough to take anywhere, so chances are that the Mino will actually record more valuable clips than the more expensive equipment. Among the downsides is that it has a fixed battery and no optical zoom, which limits the recording you can do - at least at good quality. But overall, at the price, the Flip Mino is a great complement to the other videorecording stuff you have.

Basically you play a small creature, micro-organism, I guess, which you control throughout its evolution. Your creature eats smaller creatures and runs away from larger ones. In between levels you can equip your creature with different features, defensive and offensive, and customize how it looks. You steer the creature by tilting the iPhone; that’s all there is to playing it. It’s easy to get going, fun to play, graphics and audio are great, and it lasts a long time.

Take control over a football team (yes, of course it’s football, not soccer). Pick your country, pick your opponent, and kick off. Graphics are great as is the audio. Even the atmosphere when you play is good. You have a directional pad on the bottom left of the touch screen and pass and shoot buttons on the right. For some, these controls are going to be strange and take some getting used to. Bottom line, if you like football, this is a great game for you.

The PowerBook G3 series announced in early 1998, with model code names Wall Street and Main Street, set a new design trend for Apple. We go to the Maps application and tap the icon for starting the GPS. After a few seconds it shows us a blue dot marking our location. We drop a pin in this location and call it “Burj Al Arab” so we can easily later find our way back.

Our friends have told us where we need to go, just outside the main built-up areas of Dubai, to see some desert. We scroll through the map to find the destination, toggle Map and Satellite view on and off to see better, and finally drop another pin at the destination. That’s where we need to go.

As we said, currently driving directions are not supported and the maps are somewhat outdated for Dubai, but the blue dot on the iPhone’s screen updates all the time as we drive so at least we know where we are at all times.

As our journey through Dubai continues we stop at a cafe with Wi-Fi internet access to get online. Find a Movie
Our day out and about in Dubai will later on end in going to see a movie. So we start up the Safari web browser on the iPhone, type in the URL we want to go to, and browse around that site. With a quick two-finger pinch on the screen we can zoom in to see detail. By rotating the iPhone we can see the site in landscape or portrait mode.

If you have the Ask to Join Networks feature turned on, whenever the iPhone can spot a Wi-Fi network it will show a message asking if you want to connect. In our case we wanted to connect to the cafe’s network so we can browse and send email.

One of our friends who we couldn’t get a hold of earlier is probably still sleeping. You can broadcast live video from any iPhone, first generation or 3G. You need a fast connection so Wi-Fi or 3G will do. Though you need to have an iPhone with a working phone number, because you sign up at http://qik.com and they send you a message to your phone so you can activate it for the service. Then you get a free account on qik.com, and whenever you start the Qik application on the iPhone and start the video you broadcast live. Depending on the connection, there may be a delay but it works pretty well. Any video you broadcast will be stored on the Qik.com site and depending on your settings, it might go out live for the whole world to see.

تشاطر المعلومات عن طريق ايفرنوت يعتبر احد اهم التطبيقات التيhttp://evernote.com موقع يجب ان يعرفها و يستخدمها الجميع اذ يستطيع الموقع ان يشاطر المعلومات بين جهازك االيفون و اليبود تاتش و الماك .في نفس الوقت يمنكك الدخول الي الموقع و انشاء حساب كما يمكنك ان و هناك ايضًا برنامجOS X تفعل ذلك مباشرة من برنامج ماك بعدها سوف يتم.علي االيفون و اليبود تاتش خصيصًا لذلك تشاطر المعلومات بين اجهزتك الثالثة اذا ما توافرت تغطية االنترنت اال ان االمر ممكن مع ماك و ايفون و ايبود تاتش حتي .بدون انترنت فتح حساب في ايفرنوت مازال مجانًا حتي االن اال انني اعتقد ً ان ذلك لن يستمر طوي .ال
Share Over the Air AirShare (http://tinyurl.com/5dm997) is another ingenious application for the iPhone. It lets you copy files from your Mac onto the mobile device over Wi-Fi. So even a fairly large document, like a 10MB PDF file, will be relatively fast to send over Wi-Fi with AirShare. Sure you could email them to yourself but that would be more hassle. When AirShare starts up, it shows the address you have to use to connect to it from a Mac. Once connected you just drag and drop the files you want to take with you. For a limited time AirShare is free, but they plan to charge $6.99 for it eventually.

Sync Information with Evernote EverNote (http://evernote.com/) is one of those applications that everyone should know about and use. It syncs information between the web, your iPhone or iPod touch, and your Mac. You can log in on the web and create and access notes, you can do the same with a Mac OS X application on your Mac, or with an application on your iPhone or iPod touch. The information is synchronized between the three as long as there is an Internet connection, but on the Mac and iPhone/iPod it’s available even offline. Accounts and usage are free, at least for now. I imagine they’ll start charging at some point though.

Start with the presentation you want to export. Go to File > Save as. This will save each slide as a picture.
Now you want to import the slides into iPhoto. When iPhoto is open, go to File > Import and select the previously exported slide pictures.
Once the pictures are imported, put them in a new Album.

Now open iTunes, with the iPod touch connected, in the Photos tab. Make sure the new Album syncs to the iPod and click the Apply button.
Connect your iPod to the TV with the Apple Composite (or Component) AV Cable.
On the iPod touch, go to the album with the slides and either flick through them manually or run them as a slideshow.
