Security or Obscurity? What was your New Year’s Resolution this year? To go to the gym more? To work

harder? To be kinder to other people? To backup more? Many of us need to fulfill all those resolutions, but I would hazard a guess that very few of you back up your data regularly. This issue is dedicated to security and privacy, and backup is an important aspect of this topic because it deals with keeping your information safe and secure. You don’t want other people to be able to look at your data, but you also want to keep your data for future viewing and adjustment. So in your promise for what you’re going to accomplish in 2008, please include something about regular backups. In terms of security and privacy, we also need to be aware of things like viruses, worms, trojans, spyware, etc. Some say that Mac users, by and large, are complacent and don’t take these threats seriously. That may be the case, and if it is I’d urge each and every one of you to start taking these issues seriously, monitor current threats, and be careful with what you do online. However, I think it’s true that there is still no widespread problem with viruses and other nasty things on the Mac platform. It seems most of what has appeared has only been limited to protected lab environments. Security issues are primarily contained to what we do online, but it seems the Mac OS X we love and use has held up very well against the things that have been thrown at it so far. That’s not to say that it will always remain this way. We’ve enjoyed a period of relative security and stability compared to our Windowsusing friends, and I really hope that this will continue. Personally I don’t think that today there’s any great reason why a user should run antivirus on a Mac, but if it makes you feel better, please do so. Read about the free ClamXAV in this issue of Shuffle. On another note, MacWorld Expo has come and gone again with Steve Jobs taking the stage to bring us new and exciting products. Time Capsule fits right in with the theme of this issue, and we hope to come back in a future issue with a review of it, as well as of the amazing MacBook Air.

Questions & Answers:

How To Protect My Wireless Network Wireless technology is everywhere, look no further than the MacBook Air that was announced at Macworld Expo. And for the most part we benefit from not being tied down to cables. More and more of us have wireless networking, Wi-Fi, at work as well as home, with all the security and privacy implications that brings. Written as a question and answer session, this article is meant to try to clear up some common questions surrounding Wi-Fi. Q: My friend told me he doesn’t pay for his internet broadband. Instead he is “piggybacking” on other people’s unsecured Wi-Fi networks within his apartment building. Is this possible? A: Sure it’s possible. I think anyone who lives in an apartment building can attest to how many wireless networks there are, and that many of them are open and unprotected. Many who buy Wi-Fi equipment and set it up at home don’t secure their networks. And by default pretty much any Wi-Fi equipment is open and accessible to all. So unless you set some security on the Wi-Fi network, your neighbors can enjoy a free ride at your expense. Whether this is ethical or moral is a debate we’ll save for another time, but there are obviously security and privacy implications of having other people using your internet connection. And if that other person does something really bad while using your Wi-Fi, like hack into a bank and take money, then it’s quite possible you end up liable because they were using your connection. So besides protecting your information and equipment, you want to secure the wireless network so you don’t end up paying for what someone else has done.

Q: What type of security should I have on my wireless network? A: The short answer is WPA with a good password. But let’s try to expand that answer a bit. Generally you have a choice between WEP (Wired Equivalent Privacy) and WPA (Wi-Fi Protected Access). WEP was for a long time the only protection available for Wi-Fi networks, but fortunately we now also have WPA to choose from with most access points and clients. WEP encryption is fairly easily broken, but WPA with a good password is much harder if not practically impossible to crack. We should point out that if you have older wireless equipment it may not support WPA, in which case you have to stick with WEP.

trol). It’s a unique identifier that’s used to make the network traffic find its way to the proper destinations. With most Wi-Fi base stations you can select to only accept certain MAC addresses with which to connect. Even if others can see the SSID, they can’t connect unless they use an approved MAC address. A problem with this approach is that it’s fairly straightforward to spook (fake) a MAC address, so it offers little real protection. All this security is no good unless you also have a strong password. Having “password” as a password, for example, I think we all realize is a really bad idea. The password should be as long and as random as possible. Let a random password generator (such as the one at http://www.pctools. com/guides/password/) generate a password for you, and your password will be as secure as it can be. If you make up your own password try to stay away from anything that may appear in a dictionary, and mix characters and digits. Q: How do I access and change my wireless settings?

The SSID (Service Set Identifier) is the name of the wireless network. You typically set this in the wireless settings section of your access point (see next question). You can choose between broadcasting the SSID or hiding it. If you hide it, someone who casually passes by will not “see” the wireless network. This offers very little protection, as the wireless signal is still broadcast and with just some knowledge a person can still access it. So don’t broadcast the SSID if you like, but don’t think it protects you in any way. Every device that connects to a network has a MAC address (Media Access Con-

6 shuffle Middle East | www.emiratesmac.com | shuffle@emiratesmac.com

A: This is usually done by going to a specific URL with a web browser. So once you’re connected to the wireless network you would browse to something like “http://192.168.1.1”. Note that the specific URL may be different for you, depending on who makes your Wi-Fi base station. The first time you enter that URL there is probably not a password, but you need to set one as soon as you can. If you don’t, anyone else can connect and change your settings. Follow the above advice about passwords. It’s different with Apple wireless base stations: To administer an Airport Extreme or Express base station you have to have the Airport Utility, which comes on a disk when you purchase the equipment.

Q: I sometimes use my MacBook when I’m out and about, like at coffee shops. I’m worried that someone can access my private files. What countermeasures should I take to avoid this happening? A: Public access points such as Etisalat’s iZone in the United Arab Emirates are generally wide open and not secured. This means the information is sent unencrypted and the guy sitting next to you, although he looks innocent and harmless, may be saving all the information sent on the network. If you got to a web site that uses “https” then you’re secure, but most of the time sites don’t use encrypted connections and it’s rare the email does, so be careful. If you want to make really sure that you’re safe, you have to use something like a VPN (Virtual Private Network) connection. Q: I went to my local electronic store looking for a wireless router. There were so many names and numbers to choose from that I walked away totally confused. Please could you advise me

on the best choice for a home-based wireless network? A: It can be quite a jungle and it’s hard to know what’s good and what you need. Generally speaking I would stick with the major brands, such as Linksys, NetGear, 3Com, Buffalo, etc. One thing to check first is the speed. That’s the “802.11”something. The latest standard is 802.11n, but not all devices support it yet. If you really want to be on the safe side, 802.11g is the way to go, and it’s rated at 54Mbp which should be plenty for everything but the heaviest of file-copying. If you have something that’s 802.11b, be aware that it is outdated technology and only rated at 11Mbps. And know that if you use any 802.11b device on an 802.11n network, the network speed will not go over the 802.11b specifications. It will always follow the lowest common denominator. Also consider whether you need a DSL modem. There are many combined DSL modems and Wi-Fi routers to choose from, which of course is convenient because it’s allin-one. Apple currently doesn’t sell any

product that works as a DSL modem, so if you have Apple wireless gear such as an Airport Extreme you still need the DSL modem part in the form of another device. At home we use a 3Com Wi-Fi router/modem, but we only use it as a DSL modem and we have an Airport Extreme working as the Wi-Fi access point. The combinations are almost endless. Q: Any final piece of advice? A: Wireless technology has come a long way in a few years. Problems that were common before have now gone away and overall devices are much more reliable than they used to be. It’s wonderful not being tied to cables, and Apple is clearly setting a trend with the MacBook Air and Time Capsule - saying that wireless is the way to go. I think once you’re wireless you wonder how you could ever have done without it before. Good luck and have fun. SpamSieve:

Advanced Spam Filtering Many email applications have built-in spam filtering, and all major online email services do as well. I use GMail a lot and it has pretty good spam filtering, but I use many email accounts apart from GMail, and other services aren’t as good at protecting me from the inevitable flood of spam that arrives daily. Since my main email application is Apple Mail, I’ve

been a user for a couple of years now of SpamSieve (http://c-command.com/spamsieve/), a wonderful application that you should know about. It’s basically an advanced spam filter for Apple Mail and other email applications, like Entourage and Eudora. It’s a stand-alone program that you set up to check your email, and it does the filtering before the email arrives in your inbox. Once it’s installed and set up you have to train it to recognize what is spam and what is not. SpamSieve needs what it calls a “corpus” of example emails, tagged as either spam or not; from which it learns so that it can better identify future spam emails. The basic principle is: the larger the corpus, the better the spam detection. After using it for a long time, I’ve actually reached a situation where SpamSieve tells me that the corpus is “unnecessarily large”. The junk mail filtering in Apple Mail and Thunderbird is okay, but in my experience SpamSieve does even better at identifying the spam. Nowadays I rarely get any spam in my inbox, and I also rarely get false positives (i.e. an email that is okay but has been identified as spam). If you use a desktop email application like Apple Mail and get too much spam, consider buying SpamSieve. It’s only $30 and it may just end up saving your sanity, because you no longer have to deal with so much spam.

Online Backup with S3 and

Amazon JungleDisk Backup is something that we all know we should do, but that few of us actually do. When Steve Jobs introduced the Time Machine application in Leopard at WWDC 2006 he said that according to Apple’s research, only 26% of users backup at all, and only 4% said they use some kind of automated software to do this. And we know that burning DVDs or even copying to external hard drives, although easy to use, has the potential for failing sooner or later. Hard drives fail, as do optical disks such as CDs and DVDs. In addition, our drives are becoming really huge. It’s now not uncommon to have a 250GB or 500GB internal hard drive and a few external drives of similar or larger capacity. It’s hard to see how such a large volume of data can be backed up in a simple way using traditional means. Backing up online Online backup and storage is something that has been around for a long time, but it has only become really big in the last few years. Now you even get 10GB of space with a .Mac account and using your iDisk is dead easy, although performance in the Middle East leaves much to be desired. Besides iDisk for backup, I’ve used various services but there’s always something that’s just doesn’t seem quite right about them. Either they’re too expensive, too hard to access, or they have other limitations. I like Box.net for some kinds of online storage and I use it regularly, but if you have a lot of data all you want to do is back up files then Amazon S3 may be a better choice. Amazon S3 Amazon’s Simple Storage Service, or S3 for short, is a relative newcomer to the

online storage arena. Started in 2006, it draws upon technological experience that Amazon has garnered while building the Amazon.com online store and other services. If you think about it, Amazon.com has been running a successful – now even profitable – online business for longer than most anyone else. And in order to accomplish this they’ve had to invest in research and development of various technologies needed for their operations, including storage. In recent years Amazon.com has launched into new projects allowing other companies and individuals to tap in to Amazon.com’s technologies. With S3 they have extended the use of Amazon.com’s storage system to others, and they charge a competitive fee for it. I guess from Amazon.com’s point of view, they’re thinking, “We’ve got the technology anyway, so why not let others use it and make a few bucks from it.” As good as all this may sound, Amazon S3 is not the most user-friendly service. There are other online storage services geared toward regular users such as http://www. box.net, which I mentioned earlier, that make the process of storing and retrieving much easier. While it’s hard to beat S3 for value and flexibility, it suffers from not being user-friendly. In many ways it feels like S3 has been built by programmers for programmers – and not for the average user.

10 shuffle Middle East | www.emiratesmac.com | shuffle@emiratesmac.com

Buckets Central to S3, and perhaps a bit hard for new users to understand, is the idea of a bucket. A bucket in S3 is basically a folder in which you can put files. The tricky thing is that a bucket has to have a unique name. Not only do your buckets have to have unique names but so do all S3 users. This means if someone else has already created a bucket called “Vacation-photos” you can’t create a bucket with the same name, even if you’re using a different account from the user who created the initial “Vacation-photos” bucket. So think of buckets as folders in which you can put files, and give them unique names that act as a reminder of the files they contain. You can create folders inside of buckets, so I have a bucket called “Shuffle”: in which I have folders for “2006”, “2007”, and “2008”. After each issue is finished, I upload a zipped version of the complete issue with all the files to the correct folder.

JungleDisk

had no problems with it at all. One very nice thing is that JungleDisk is available JungleDisk (note the naming connection for Windows and Linux, as well as Mac with “Amazon”) is a software application OS X, so you can access your S3 account that lets you manage your S3 account as from various operating systems. I keep if it was a drive connected to your Mac. all three versions with me on a flash disk It’s a bit like your iDisk, in that it seems so I can run the appropriate version at all to first make a copy of what you want to times. The speed of S3 with JungleDisk upload and then actually uploads it. Then is not great. Uploading I got around whenever you have an internet connection, 100-150kbps on a DSL connection, and JungleDisk uploads what you’ve copied to up to 300kbps on a corporate connecthe local JungleDisk disk. It seems to work tion. So far I’ve uploaded around 10GB very well, and most of the time it just of information to S3 – with upload space picks up from where it was and continues still remaining. Unfortunately at these speeds and amounts of Amazon S3 is “pay as you go” so you only pay data you have to for what you actually use. There is no minialmost dedicate a machine mum or setup fee; you just pay for what you to the task of upload, store, and download. The price is $0.15 uploading, and per gigabyte per month of storage used, $0.10 it has to stay 24/7 until per gigabyte of data uploaded, and $0.18 per on finished. That’s gigabyte of data downloaded. a bit of a hassle, but for me it’s okay because I mainly upload to S3 the things I need to copying. You can also set up automated backup as well as other things that I would backups that enable JungleDisk to copy normally keep on an external hard drive files to your S3 account on a set schedule. (i.e. things I don’t need very often, if at all, but that I want to keep a copy of just in JungleDisk costs $20 but this price case). includes all future updates and upgrades, and you still pay your S3 fee separately. JungleDisk Plus It’s not the most Mac-like application: For There’s also JungleDisk Plus which allows example, it would make more sense from you to get to your S3 files with a web a Mac OS X perspective to place it as an browser. One shortcoming is that you can’t icon in the menu bar or even as a System create new buckets with the Plus version. Preference pane. However, JungleDisk Also the interface is far from user-friendly, does the trick and does so very well all nor as advanced as http://www.box.net, for things considering. I’ve used it for about a example, but it does the trick. month at the time of this writing, and I’ve

Price

Public files One really nice thing about S3 is that any file you place into a bucket on S3 can be made available to others via URLs. There is a bit of a caveat with Jungle Disk, though, as it seems that anything uploaded with JungleDisk goes into buckets that are not publicly available. What you can do is connect to your S3 account with Transmit (URL) and create a new bucket, and then put your publicly available files in it. That seems to do the trick. Try this example URL: http://s3.amazonaws.com/shuffletest/jungledisk.png. You have to make the folder or files publicly readable. You can do that with Transmit or something like the Amazon S3 Firefox Organizer (https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/ addon/3247) which, incidentally, also serves as a good compliment to JungleDisk for uploading and downloading files. Summing up Online backup is something that I think most users should consider. And even if there are services that make it easier than Amazon.com S3, for the price you pay and for the amount you can store (unlimited!) it’s hard to beat. There are different ways for you to upload your files to S3, but with a Mac one of the easiest ways is with JungleDisk. I hope this article can give you some ideas for how you could manage your backups with online storage.

Mac Models 101 Mac mini

Selecting what Mac to buy can sometimes be daunting, especially if you’re new to Macs. Therefore we put together this short guide to the different models of Macintosh computers currently on offer from Apple. This guide only offers some brief pointers. To evaluate what you should buy, we advice you spend some time with the Mac in a store. iMac The ultimate home desktop computer, the iMac is the all-in-one that packs a punch. You can get a 20 or 24-inch screen, up to 4GB of RAM, and 1TB of hard drive. The iMac’s selling point is the integrated package, which also happens to look really awesome. Price: from AED6199.

The introductory model, petite as it is, still packs quite a punch. Don’t take its small size as a sign that it’s slow. It comes with a Core2Duo processor of up to 2.0GHz, which is plenty for most things you’d want to do. It can also take up to 2GB RAM and 160GB hard drive as well as a SuperDrive. Its limitation lies in that it’s very hard to upgrade, and it has integrated Intel graphics, so don’t expect to play the latest 3D games on a mini. Price: from AED2699.

Mac Pro For the ultimate in power and flexibility, you can’t beat Mac Pro but it’s not cheap. You can get it up to an eight-core configuration, 16GB RAM, four 750GB hard drives, and two optical drives. You also have a selection when it comes to graphics card. Price: from AED11999.

MacBook Pro For the technology you can find inside them, the MacBook Pros are surprisingly compact. But no one can say that the 17-inch model is light and easy to transport. The 15-inch model is slightly smaller, and both sport a gorgeous, large display. It has up to 2.6GHz Core2Duo processors, 4GB or RAM, and 250GB of hard drive. If its power and large screens you want, MacBook Pro is your choice. Price: from AED7999. MacBook The main attraction of the MacBook is obviously its size. It has a 13.3-inch display which has enough resolution for most things (but is limited for tasks such as design), a Core2Duo processor of up to 2.2GHz, RAM up to 4GB, and a hard drive up to 250GB. The MacBook is a lot of power in a small package. If mobility is your primary concern, this is your choice. Price: from AED4999.

iPod Models 101 As with buying a Mac, selecting what iPod to buy is not always easy. In every issue of Shuffle we present the current models of Apple’s iPods, what their main features are, and the starting price. Hopefully this can serve as a simple and quick guide to the iPods so you can make a more informed buying decision.

iPod Classic This is the iPod we have known and loved for so many years, hence the name Classic. With a large display, plenty of storage space, this is still the king of the iPods even though many new models have been released. Comes in versions of 80GB and 160GB and is available in silver and black. Price: from AED1199.

iPod Touch iPod Nano Available in different colors, the Nano is the ultimate fashion accessory. With a wonderfully crisp display it can play video and the small size means you can slip it into your pocket and take it anywhere. Comes in 4GB and 8GB versions in five different colors. Price: from AED649.

Giving Directions With Google Earth You know how you sometimes have to give directions to a friend who’s coming over to your house for dinner? What you probably end up having to do is either try to explain the way, write down directions, draw a map for them, or all of the above. Next time, save yourself some trouble by just sending them the Google Earth coordinates for your place instead. ©iStockphoto.com/StanRohrer

STEP 1

STEP 2

STEP 3

Download Google Earth from http:// earth.google.com/. It’s a free download.

Install and start up Google Earth. Find the position of your house. In my example I’ve picked the Emirates Palace in Abu Dhabi.

Click the Add Placemark icon. A new placemark appears on the map. Move it to the exact desired location.

STEP 4

STEP 5

STEP 6

In the floating window that appears, type in a name for the place. Then you can close the window.

Right-click on the yellow pin on the map and click Email in the menu that shows.

Your email application should open and you’ll find a KMZ file attached. When your recipient opens that file with Google Earth, they will be shown the exact location of your place.

Mac and Security by Senhil

If you look up the word ‘Security’ in the dictionary you get the following entry, “The state of being free from danger or threat”. Security is a big issue for all of us who are linked to the online world. If any of you have watched the movie “The Net” starring Sandra Bullock or the movie “Eraser” starring Arnold Schwarzenegger, you could get a sense of the dangers of the virtual world. Both movies dealt with the theme about how a connected world can be used to virtually erase the person from the face of earth. Could this be possible? Maybe far fetched as most of the Hollywood plots go, but in the future it could be possible. Given the fact that most of us deal almost exclusively online for banking, paying bills, corresponding, trading in stocks, registering and most of the other things related to the government. And it is also a well known fact that every person who owns a computer has a virtual ID, which mirrors his or her real ID. Your ID card, your driving license, your bank account, and other important and relevant belongings are all online. Considering that one could in extreme cases be “erased”, I am sure most of us do take some precautions to keep ourselves safe from online predators. The easiest way to keep away any of these threats is to just not go online. However, is this possible? 40-45% of the world’s population has never used a computer in their lives and life continues on for them. The

question is: could we manage to survive without being online? Impossible! I, for example start having withdrawal symptoms if I have not logged on and spent at least 30 minutes on the Mac and the virtual world, every day. Considering most of us have this affliction, it is imperative that we take all the precautions for ensuring our security online. The first step I took to ensure that I am safe online is to switch over to a Mac. It’s that simple. 50% of your problem is resolved by switching over to the Mac world. By switching over, you almost eliminate the virus problem. The next biggest advantage is less spam mail, if you use Apple Mail, which I found to be a big boon. Since most of the time you get stuff which is embarrassing, or is hawking stuff which you don’t need or that is plain chain mail. I rarely get this on Mail, which uses better Junk filters. Some simple strategies that I use to keep myself safe include:

drafted and have a wonderful proposition that is very tempting to respond to. The moment you do so, however, is the beginning of the end of your identity. 5. Never ever use a pirated CD/DVD or borrowed games on your Mac. 6. Last but not least, run anti virus regularly to ensure that your Mac is free of virus. Not that Mac needs an anti virus software, but it is better to be safe than sorry. There are more than enough articles and to-do’s on the net to keep you safe from spammers, identity thieves, viruses and other malignant things, but if you keep to the same basics that you would follow in the real world to keep yourself safe then you can be reasonably sure that you would be safe in the online world also. You already have a good head start as a user of Mac; half your security worries are already taken care of by its reliable operating system from Apple.

1. Never download stuff from unknown web sites. In fact, I don’t even download jokes and other non-relevant stuff from recognizable web sites. 2. Never open unknown attachments from any recipient, known or unknown. 3. Never download .exe files from any recipient. 4. Never respond to any mail asking for any kind of personal information. Some of the mails which one receives are so well

Macworld Expo Roundup Again we’re trying to sum up what Steve Jobs announced at Macworld Expo in San Francisco on January 15, 2008. If you remember last year we were treated to the iPhone, something that would be hard to top, but that didn’t stop us from wanting something spectacular, did it? With that measuring stick, Jobs didn’t quite measure up to last year’s keynote, but then that’s not really a fair comparison, I think. When he got up on stage on this occasion, one year after the iPhone was announced, Steve Jobs said he wanted to talk about four things. But before he started on these four things he

mentioned that Mac OS X 10.5 Leopard is selling very well. Apple has so far sold 5 million copies of Leopard, which means about 20% of the installed base is now on Leopard. That’s pretty amazing, since it’s only been out since October. Jobs also said that Microsoft Office 2008 is now shipping. First thing: Time Capsule Think of it as Airport Extreme with a hard drive inside. That’s the essence of Time Capsule. Presented as a companion to Time Machine, the slick backup feature in Mac OS X 10.5 Leopard, Time Capsule

will let Mac users backup files with Time Machine wirelessly. This was a feature that was expected in Leopard but, somewhat mysteriously, Apple took it out and didn’t really want to say what had happened to it – but now we know. For a household or small office, Time Capsule can work as a central backup station as well as a wireless base station. It sells in two versions: 500GB for $299 and 1TB for $499. Second thing: iPhone After revealing Time Capsule, Jobs moved on to the iPhone. Many had expected a brand new iPhone, perhaps a 3G version,

the Middle East remains to be seen. Accompanying news about iTunes was news regarding an update for Apple TV, or Apple TV take two as some have called it. The hardware has not been updated but the software has. Apple TV now supports 5.1 Dolby, and you can view audio and video podcasts on it as well as photos from Flickr or .Mac and YouTube videos. Basically Apple has disassociated Apple TV from a computer and you can now do more things independently, meaning that more people can consider buying one. Apple TV 40GB model is now $229 and you will pay $329 for the 160GB model. For owners of existing Apple TVs there will be a free software upgrade. Fourth thing: MacBook Air and if you were one of them you’re probably sadly disappointed. However, Apple has put in a whole range of new things in iPhone without updating the actual hardware. iPhone software version 1.1.3 was released, with new features including: Google Maps with locations, web clips, customizable home screens (up to nine), the ability to send SMS to multiple numbers, support for chapters and subtitles in videos, and support for lyrics in audio. The iPod Touch was also updated and now has Mail, maps, stocks, notes and weather - functionality we’ve come to depend on in iPhone. Personally I’m excited about the inclusion of the Mail application in iPod Touch. I think that will make an attractive alternative to iPhone for many users, and that’s probably what Apple is thinking too. Steve Jobs announced some stunning iPhone sales figures; 4 million iPhones sold since the start which comes out at around 20,000 per day on average. The SDK (Software Development Kit), which has been rumored for a long time, will be released in February - as announced by Jobs. In iPhone’s first full quarter of sales (Q3, 2007) it sold enough to came in at the number two spot of smartphone sales in the US, behind RIM (Blackberry). Apple managed to capture twice as much market as Palm and more than twice that of Motorola. And that’s in the first few months. Third thing: iTunes After the iPhone, Jobs turned his attention to iTunes and the big news of Apple TV and movie rentals. Jobs said that Apple has sold 4 billion songs, 125 million TV shows and 7 million movies through their iTunes

Store, and now they want to expand that with movie rentals. “A better way to deliver movies,” Jobs called it. And he declared that Apple has signed up an amazing line-up of movie studios, including Touchstone, MGM, Miramax, Lions Gate, Fox, WB, Walt Disney, Paramount, Universal, and Sony. Movies for rent will be available in the iTunes Store 30 days after they’ve been released on DVD. You can watch them on a computer (Mac or PC), iPod, or iPhone. Once you’ve started downloading a movie you have 30 days to start watching it, and when you’ve started watching it you have 24 hours to finish watching it. Those are pretty reasonable conditions, I think, as is the price. For a new release you will pay $3.99, and for an older movie you pay $2.99. If you want the movie in HD you pay a dollar more, so prices become $3.99 or $4.99. The movie rental is rolling out in the US now, and will be available internationally later in the year. Whether this means anything for

Yes, the rumors were largely true about Apple’s new subnotebook, ultra portable, or whatever you want to call it. So finally, the fourth announcement from Steve Jobs was “the world’s thinnest notebook” called MacBook Air. Presented as the third addition to the notebook lineup, alongside of MacBook and MacBook Pro, the MacBook Air is in many ways a half MacBook. The MacBook Air features a 13.3 inch LED-backlit display featuring 1280×800 pixels, same as in MacBook. The graphical chipset driving it is also the same as in current MacBook, the GMAX3100, with up to 144MB of RAM. The most stunning

shuffle@emiratesmac.com | www.emiratesmac.com | shuffle Middle East 17

aspect of this new portable is its size: It’s 3lbs or 1.36kg, and goes from 0.76 inches thick to only 0.16 inches. That’s a lot of computer in a small space. Even with the tiny package, it features 1.6GHz or 1.8GHz Core2Duo processor. In terms of memory it has 2GB (non upgradeable) soldered onto the motherboard, and features a 1.8inch hard drive (same as iPod) with 80GB capacity or 64GB SSD (Solid State Drive) as an option. On one side it has the MagSafe connector port. It’s a different MagSafe from the current MacBook as well as MacBook Pro and it is also a different wattage. On the other side, the MacBook Air has a small compartment that folds out, revealing a headphone jack, a USB 2 port, and a micro-DVI port, and that’s as far as the connections go. Pretty sparse it would seem, but it was probably necessary to save space and weight. You may notice that there is no Ethernet port, but Apple sell a USB-Ethernet adaptor for $29, which many users will find necessary. Apple borrows concepts from the iPhone and included a larger than usual multitouch track-pad. With special multi-finger gestures you can zoom in and out, pan, and more. Other features on the MacBook Air include a backlit keyboard, which lights up in low light, and an iSight camera built into the screen. The battery is not user-serviceable, meaning you can’t take it out yourself. Apple will charge $129 for a new battery and they rate it at around five hours of battery life per charge. You will have noticed that it doesn’t have an internal optical drive. Instead Apple sells

an optional external USB-connected SuperDrive for $99. Obviously they think that most users won’t need or want an optical drive. For situations where you don’t have the external SuperDrive available, there’s a new software application called Remote Disc. It’s software you install on a host computer, Mac or PC, and when you run it you can see drives from it on your MacBook Air and install software from the remote drives, just as if they were on your Mac. All these goodies don’t come cheap, of course. The price is $1800 for the 1.6GHz model with 80GB hard drive, and $3100 for the 1.8GHz version with the 64GB solid-state drive. Feelings after the keynote As often is the case I felt a bit like, “Was that all there was?” But after digesting the news a bit I feel like it was a very good keynote with lots of new and exciting things. Personally it’s the MacBook Air that titillates me the most, but the new functionality of the Apple TV is also alluring. Now if they could only see fit to launch an iTunes Store for the Middle East. So that brings this year’s keynote to a close. Now all we can do is sit back and wait for these items to make it into the stores here. I, for one, am really curious as to what the price will be of all these things. Until next year, hold on to your credit cards.

Wide Open (Leopard) Spaces

by Nassir

When Leopard was released I was one of the few Mac fanatics who kept it at arm’s length. Seeing how disappointing Vista was to the rest of the world, I was worried that the much hyped Mac OS X 10.5 would somehow find itself in the same basket. Those doubts were put to rest though when my new iMac arrived as the New Year was starting and I fell in love with both Leopard as a whole, and its specific but powerful and important, little features.

desktop choose “System Preferences” then “Expose and Spaces”. Choose the “Spaces” tab and you can pick any amount of desktops, from 2 to 16 spaces. This is of course dependent on how much clutter actually fills up your desktop. Mine is set to four, partly because I am an average computer user and partly because I think having four large rectangles, rather than say eight smaller ones, is a really cool effect for what comes next. Now click on the “Expose” tab and notice the “Hot Screen Corners” section. I have mine set as it shows in the image. I like having both Spaces and Dashboard available with a single “swish” of my mouse, and having the sleep function handy is good for when you need to run away from your Mac when life starts calling. Choose what works best for you.

Spaces is one such feature; the others being Stacks and Time Machine. The idea of multiple desktops on a single machine is nothing new; I remember having four desktops on my Linux box ages ago in Mephis and Ubuntu. It is also a staple of Red Hat and SuSe Linux. What sets Spaces apart from the rest is its interface and its cool sister application, Expose.

Close up the windows and start using your Mac as you usually would. The way mine is set up, all you have to do to change from desktops is perform a cool and fluid movement of your Mighty Mouse to the lower right corner.

Try it, especially with non-Mac users watching! The movement to switch to Spaces and choose the specific one needed takes all about one second, maybe less. It is a revolutionary take on an old and widely used idea; having many computers in one, and being able to separate business and personal work. And having a lot of fun doing so is a must in today’s demanding world, especially if you’re a neat freak like me who hates having multiple windows and applications open all at once. Leave it to Apple Inc., the father of creative computer design, to come up with an amazing design for this as well. I’m confident that you will find using Spaces in this manner (or any other really) so impressive that not only will you start using Spaces on a constant basis, but your friends who see these changes take place - these switches on the fly - will flat out agree that if nothing else, it is the coolest thing ever. Or at least far cooler than anything their new malfunctioning Vista boxes can dish out.

Let’s get into why I believe this is a feature you can’t live without, and how to make it even more amazing. Starting at your

Canon G9 Price Around AED1950 From Canon Distributor Canon Middle East Web http://www.usa.canon.com/consumer/controller?act=ModelDe tailAct&fcategoryid=144&mode lid=1566

Although the Canon G9 is a point-and-shoot camera, it is not a camera suitable for the average weekend photographer. Despite its small package, and even though it has fully automated modes, the G9 is a camera targeting advanced photographers who like to have manual control over their photography. It has a range of controls, from its fully automatic Auto mode to the completely manual settings where you control everything yourself. There are two custom modes which you can basically program to your liking and quickly switch to. For example, I have one custom mode set to high ISO and black and white, which gives me a sort of old-time Tri-X feel which I like. These advanced functions, both automatic as well as manual, combined with support for RAW make this camera a good choice for anyone who likes to experiment. It might be a small camera but it’s 12 megapixel, which means you get 4000×3000 pixel exposures from the G9. This fills up a memory card rather quickly so be sure to buy as big a card as you can afford. With even 4GB cards costing very little there’s no reason why you should be cheap when it comes to storage. The G9 takes standard SD cards. Some other unusual features of the G9 is that it has a hotshoe for mounting an external flash - and the ability to buy lens-converters, both wide angle and tele, and mount them in front of the lens. Perhaps it’s because I have rather large hands, but I wish they’d make it a bit more comfortable to hold and the battery life could be better. The viewfinder is all but useless but is compensated by its large 3” display, which is bright and clear. But these are minor gripes really and, all in all, the Canon G9 is an excellent camera suitable for more advanced photographers. With its great features, excellent build quality and it’s a great choice.

Intego VirusBarrier X4 Price $69.95 From Intego Distributor Intego Web http://www.intego.com/virusbarrier/

You may think that $70 is expensive for antivirus software, especially since the viruses in the wild for Mac OS X is hardly heard of - and you may be right. But if you want virus protection and you don’t mind paying, VirusBarrier is the best choice available. Installation was very straightforward. A few clicks and a restart, and that was it. Starting up the first time, VirusBarrier wanted to scan the whole hard drive on my MacBook, which took a long time. In fact I left it overnight, so I’m not exactly sure how long it took. After this initial scan it seems that subsequent scans are much quicker, and not noticeable at all on everyday performance of my Mac. A quick little check with the Activity Monitor reveals that VirusBarrier takes up hardly any CPU resources during normal use, and peaks only marginally when some more intense file activity takes place. I must say that, being used to Norton products, VirusBarrier is a joy to see in terms of resource usage. Testing antivirus software is a bit strange because most of us don’t sit on a collection of malware we can just throw at our Mac and see what happens. So in a way you just have to trust that it finds what it says it will find. You can specify special folders that VirusBarrier should always check for changes; for example folders related to what you download. You can also set it to scan on a schedule, like doing a complete scan every night. It’s full of useful functions that work effortlessly in the background without you having to pay attention to them all the time, only alerting you if something is wrong. On the negative side, personally I think VirusBarrier’s interface is a bit too unusual and I’d much rather see a more standard Mac OS X interface - but I guess it looks cool. If you insist on having antivirus protection for your Mac, and you don’t mind paying for it, VirusBarrier is your best choice.

Intego NetBarrier X4 Price $69.95 From Intego Distributor Intego Web http://www.intego.com/netbarrier/

Intego says that NetBarrier “protects your computer from intrusions by constantly filtering all the activity that enters and leaves through the Internet or network”. Basically it’s an application that works in the background that monitors network traffic and activities to see what’s suspicious or not, and can take appropriate action if something strange occurs. This goes beyond just the anti-virus protection offered by VirusBarrier, for example. Personally the feature I like the best is the easy to use interface for specifying how the firewall should work: what it should or shouldn’t allow, from where and what services. The interface makes it a lot easier to keep a finely-tuned firewall on your Mac compared to the built-in firewall controls. The Antivandal function watches over your Mac and tries to identify if someone is trying to break into to it by automated means or otherwise, and will alert you to any suspicious activity. With Privacy Protection you can do things like monitor cookies in web browsers, block banner ads, and clean out history, etc. You can also hide information about you and your computer from sites you visit. The interface isn’t exactly Mac OS X standard, but it looks cool and that may be an advantage for this type of application. Let’s be honest and recognize that most of what NetBarrier provides, you can do yourself with what comes built-in to Mac OS X and with various free or shareware utilities. With NetBarrier you get a bunch of functionality collected in one place, and it’s automatically kept up to date. If you want to only spend money on one product, get VirusBarrier. However, if you want to sleep a bit easier at night knowing your Mac and your information is protected, take a look at NetBarrier.

Emirati Racing Team Completes 24hr Race The Emirates Racing Team (http://uae24hrs.com) completed the 24hr endurance race at the Dubai Autodrome on January 11-12, 2008. The drivers were Mohammad Al-Abdooli, Khaled Al-Muttawaa, Mohammad Al-Falasi, and Omran AlOwais. Omran (http://www. alowaismotorsport.com), a member of the EmiratesMac Apple User Group, said about his experience, “This was amazing. A group of us coming together like this to represent our country, and actually making it through all twenty four hours.” The team finished the 24hr race, completing 375 laps, and ending up in position 55 out

of 84 finishing teams. That’s an improvement of around 30 positions compared to where they started on the grid. The plan was to get EmiratesMac logo stickers onto the car, but unfortunately the team ran out of time and had technical difficulties which did not allow this to happen. But I’m sure EmiratesMac members were with Omran in spirit to cheer him on. If the team decides to do this again next year, and we hope they will, preparations will start earlier and hopefully it will make the team more competitive. It was a great first experience and the team did better than I think anyone expected. Congratulations to the team!

ClamXAV: Free Anti Virus

Whether you really need antivirus software on your Mac or not is a hotly debated issue. The antivirus software that most people know about is Norton Antivirus, which also happens to be the antivirus software that most Mac users would say you should stay away from. Norton AV may be good at removing viruses, I don’t know, but in my experience it’s not very good software. It takes up a lot of system resources and causes all kinds of problems. To me it seems it’s more trouble than it’s worth. But we’re fortunate that there are alternatives. VirusBarrier from Intego is a better choice than Norton AV in my opinion (see review of NetBarrier in this issue of Shuffle). ClamXAV is another option and it’s a great application which is available for free. ClamXAV (http://clamxav.com/) is a Mac OS X version of the Clam Antivirus (AV) software (http://www.clamav. net/).

Q: I am about to sell my Mac and I don’t want to leave my stuff around on the hard drive for others to read. What would you suggest I do to really clean it out before selling it? A: Disk Utility (in Applications>Utilities) will do just fine. Select the hard drive you want to erase in the list on the left, click the Erase tab, and then the Security Options button. Here you have the option of setting how many times data will be erased and the principle is: the more times data is erased the less likely it is that someone can later restore the original data. You can just zero out data once, do a 7-pass erase or a 35-pass erase. The 7-pass erase is enough for the Department of Defense in the USA, so it’s most likely also enough for you. Remember that the more passes you select, the longer the erase is going to take. If you select the 35-pass option, be prepared to wait for a long time - especially if you have a large drive. For more information, see this TechNote (http://docs.info. apple.com/article.html?artnum=303462). Q: My friends and I have some cool ideas about podcasting. We want to record when we hang out and talk and then podcast it so others can listen. I have a MacBook Pro which I thought about using. How can we do this in the easiest possible way? A: If you really want to do it on a budget, you stick with what you have: the internal mic in the MacBook Pro and Garageband which is part of iLife. That may work if it’s not a noisy environment. However, if you want better quality and there is even a little bit of background noise, you’re

better of buying an external mic. What produces really good quality recordings are USB mics. I’ve used a USB microphone from Logitech, which is only about $20 (http://www.logitech.com/index.cfm/

webcam_communications/microphones/ devices/258&cl=us,en), and it has consis-

tently produced very nice quality recordings. If you want something more mobile, consider an iPod with mic-attachment, or something like the iRiver IFP800 with external mic (http://www.iriver.com/ product/p_detail.asp?pidx=34). If you want better quality and don’t mind spending a bit of money, consider the M-Audio Microtrak II (http://www.m-audio.com/ products/en_us/MicroTrackII-main.html), which records two-channels onto a Compact Flash card.

e&order=ASC. Mac OS X 10.5 Leopard is

out of the question, unfortunately, and so is Mac OS X 10.4 Tiger. I’m unsure at this stage whether Mac OS X 10.3 Panther would run, but seems like Mac OS X 10.2 Jaguar should be fine. For a long time I was running Jaguar on a PowerMac 8600 upgraded to a G3, 350Mhz processor with 512Mb RAM and it worked fine. So you should be able to run that fine on your iBook. Something to consider also is the hard drive. 6GB should be enough, but a standard installation of Jaguar should be around 2GB - which doesn’t leave much space to play around with. If you have experience of something similar to this, please share it online at http://www. emiratesmac.com.

Q: I have an old iBook (the first one that came out I think) which is 300MHz, 6GB drive, and 96MB RAM. Is it possible to run Mac OS X on it? If so, what do I have to do to it - like bump the RAM? A: This is an excellent question, and one that I get quite often from people about different old Mac models. We know that Apple hardware typically lasts a long time so it can productively be used for many years. The problem then becomes can you run the latest version of the operating system. And actually in many cases you can. With regards to this early iBook, some detective work reveals that it should be possible to run earlier versions of Mac OS X on it. Apple-History.com is a good site to find out information about old Macs. In this case your iBook is listed:

If you are looking for that prefect recipe for lunch with friends, this is that recipe. The recipe is not only healthy, it is tasty. You can add anything to the salad or take out any item that you like. I left out the raisins, didn’t use the mayonnaise, and added broccoli that had been slightly cooked, to the salad. So go ahead and get creative with this recipe and have a wonderful lunch. This recipe from http://www. simplyrecipes.com serves four.

Ingredients 2 Tbsp olive oil 1 1/2 lb skinless chicken breast, cut into 1 inch cubes Salt 1 yellow onion, roughly chopped 2 heaped Tbsp yellow curry powder 1 cup raisins 1 apple (tart or sweet, your preference), peeled, cored, and diced 1/2 cup chopped fresh cilantro (just lightly packed) 2 green onions, sliced 1 Tbsp mayonnaise

Instructions 1. Heat olive oil on medium/medium-high heat in a thick-bottomed sauté pan. Add chicken pieces and cook, stirring frequently until just cooked through (about five minutes). Sprinkle some salt on the chicken pieces while cooking. Check doneness by removing the thickest piece and cutting it in half. If it is still pink in the middle, keep cooking. Try not to overcook the

chicken or it will be dry. Remove chicken pieces with a slotted spoon, set aside in a bowl. 2. Add yellow onion and cook. After a few minutes, when the onions are beginning to get translucent, add two heaped tablespoons of yellow curry powder. Cook a few minutes more, stirring frequently. If the curry sticks to the bottom or the mixture gets dry, add a bit more olive oil to the pan. As you stir, scrape up the stuck curry bits. Add raisins, and cook, stirring another minute. (If adding optional mayonnaise, remove curry from heat and mix in mayo.) Add raisin and onion mixture to chicken and mix well, coating the chicken pieces with the curry-infused olive oil. Refrigerate until cool. At this point you can make the salad a day ahead of time. 3. When you are ready to serve the salad, mix in the apple, green onions, and cilantro.

Adobe Tutorial:

Animating Handwriting by Brian

For beginners in Adobe Flash, this will be a gentle introduction to some of what is possible. We’re using Flash CS3 but the same basic technique works in older versions as well, so don’t worry if you don’t have the latest. This technique results in a much more realistic result for animating handwriting text than can be achieved through using an animated mask. You can see the final result at http://www.emiratesmac.com/ newsletter/resources/feb2008/index. html. Brian is an Educational Technologist trying his best to learn as much Adobe software as possible.

Type the text - a handwritten style font works best.

Break the text apart into vectors: Modify > Break Apart. Repeat this twice until break apart is no longer an option. The vectors of the letters are now editable.

The most efficient way to animate something that gradually appears is to start backwards. Select frame two of the timeline, right-click and select Insert Keyframe.

Starting at the very end point of the last letter of the word, erase a short segment using the eraser tool. Be careful you don’t erase too much at one time.

STEP 7 You now have an animation of a text that erases itself. However, we want it to do the opposite and write itself. To accomplish this we must reverse the frames. First left-click on frame one, hold down the Shift-key, and click on the last frame in the animation. All frames should now be selected. ،‫ ﻟﺪﻳﻨﺎ ﺍﻻﻥ ﺭﺳﻢ ﻣﺘﺤﺮﻙ ﻟﻌﻤﻠﻴﺔ ﻣﺴﺢ ﺍﻟﻜﺘﺎﺑﺔ‬:‫ﺍﳋﻄﻮﺓ ﺍﻟﺴﺎﺑﻌﺔ‬ ‫ ﻭﻟﻜﻲ ﻧﺤﻘﻖ‬،‫ﻭﻟﻜﻨﻨﺎ ﻓﻲ ﺍﻟﻮﺍﻗﻊ ﻧﺮﻳﺪ ﺭﺳﻢ ﻣﺘﺤﺮﻙ ﻟﻌﻤﻠﻴﺔ ﺍﻟﻜﺘﺎﺑﺔ‬ .‫ﻫﺬﺍ ﺍﻟﻬﺪﻑ ﺳﻮﻑ ﻧﻌﻜﺲ ﺍﻟﻠﻘﻄﺎﺕ‬ ‫ ﻭﺍﺑﻘﻪ‬Shift ‫ ﺍﻛﺒﺲ ﺯﺭ ﺍﻟﻌﺎﻟﻲ‬،‫ﺍﺑﺪﺃ ﺍﻭﻻ ﹰ ﺑﺎﺧﺘﻴﺎﺭ ﻟﻘﻄﺔ ﺭﻗﻢ ﻭﺍﺣﺪ‬ ‫ ﺑﻬﺬﻩ ﺍﻟﻄﺮﻳﻘﺔ‬.‫ ﺛﻢ ﺍﺧﺘﺮ ﺍﺧﺮ ﻟﻘﻄﺔ ﻓﻲ ﺍﻟﺸﺮﻳﻂ ﺍﻟﺰﻣﻨﻲ‬،‫ﻣﻀﻐﻮﻃﺎ‬ .‫ﺗﻜﻮﻥ ﺟﻤﻴﻊ ﺍﻟﻠﻘﻄﺎﺕ ﻣﺤﺪﺩﺓ‬

Is Someone Snitching On You? by Christian

Most people are familiar with the concept of a firewall. In theory, it will block all unwanted or “bad” traffic from connecting to your machine. What you may not know is many firewalls have relaxed or non-existent rules for “outbound” connections. That is, connections from your programs to servers on the internet. In fact, you may not even realize that many applications are “calling home”. This can be for a number of reasons: checking for software upgrades, downloading the latest news, or even sending Software registration forms. But what about the latest freeware game you downloaded? Perhaps the software developer is sending information regarding your specific version of OS X, or how your hardware is configured. This information may be useful for improving the quality of their software. But it also may potentially expose information that you aren’t particu-

larly comfortable in sharing. Enter Little Snitch. Think of this as a really nosy firewall, but it’s solely interested in the traffic going out of your computer. Little Snitch can be downloaded free from http://www.obdev.at/products/littlesnitch/ index.html. The only limitation of the free

version is that it stops after three hours, at which time you must restart it. You can restart it as often as you like. If you find it useful, registration is $24.95 USD (around AED92).

After installing Little Snitch, you will be required to restart your computer. When your computer restarts, you will begin wading through a series of dialog boxes asking permission to connect various programs (many you may have never heard of ) to a variety of servers. Notice the server address? This is where the program wants to connect. For example, if you use the .Mac iDisk, you will see something like this screenshot. I recognize the address idisk.mac.com, and I would like to allow it to connect. Moreover, I would like it to connect automatically without asking me in the future. However, I want to ensure that no other malicious programs take advantage of the “dotmacsyncclient” application, so I want to limit exactly where it can connect. The solution? - I will click the “Forever” tab, and choose the (already selected) ‘idisk. mac.com & Port 443 TCP (https)’, and then “Allow”. You should see this entry added to the Little Snitch configuration window. It may not always be practical to limit access to a single server address. For example, a web browser needs to connect to a wide variety of sites. If you look in the Little Snitch configuration graphic, you will notice that I allow “Flock” any connection. This doesn’t mean that I am in the dark about Flock though. Little Snitch continues to monitor where your applications are sending data. You will notice a translucent grey box will appear when new connections are established by trusted applications. If you would like to keep an eye on this, simply check the “stay visible” box. Notice that Flock is currently connecting to www.freezerpants.com? Well, that’s fine. But what if I saw Flock making a connection to a server I didn’t trust. For the sake of example, let’s pretend Freezerpants.com was a server that was harvesting email addresses for Spam (it isn’t really, I promise). What then? In the Little Snitch configuration screen, click on

the application you want to add rules for (in this case, Flock). At the top, change “Allow Connections” to “Deny Connections”, and add the appropriate information. Click “OK”, and now you’ve blocked Flock’s access to www.freezerpants.com. NOTE: Freezerpants.com is NOT the same as www.freezerpants.com. There is a quicker way to do this though:

In the floating Little Snitch window, click on the application you want to change the rules for, then in the expanded view, right click on the server and choose “Deny Connections to…” and that’s it. From now on, Freezerpants.com is blacklisted (“denied”). If you ever want to change this, simply go in to the Little Snitch Configuration window and change the setting. Now that you have power over your applications’ network connections, what next? It’s possible, if you are trying to squeeze every last bit of network performance out of your machine, to go through and explicitly deny ALL connections except for those that you choose. Arguably many background daemons (such as ntpd) use very little bandwidth, they use bandwidth nonetheless. A final note: If you try Little Snitch and decide it isn’t right for you, uninstalling does require the original installer program, so don’t trash it! To Uninstall, simply start the Uninstaller and choose “Uninstall”. If you’ve already removed the original file, don’t worry. Just download it again and run the installer.
