Asalamu Alikoum. I would like to take this opportunity to introduce myself. My name is Omran Al-Owais, I’m the Founder and Creative Director of CENTIMETERCUBE architecture and now publishing. By education and profession, I am an architect from Dubai. That’s also where I live with my wife Noura and two amazing kids; Sultan less than two years old, and Hamdan eight months old. For the past year or so, many things have changed in my life, including moving to a new home, Sultan running around breaking things, and now having a new baby called Shufflegazine. I believe that Shufflegazine is something that is extremely unique and exciting to the GCC and the wider Middle East. Combining our expertise in tech with our bi-lingual approach means we can reach a wider audience and capitalize on our individuality and experience. I have always predicted that Apple-like tech will soon catch up in the Arab world, and it did.

Meeting many fans here and around GCC just shows how loyal the customers are to the brand. I just cannot ignore the fact that Apple magazines around the world have many languages and editions. One missing edition is Arabic that will reflect how we are using our gadgets tech and technology. Wouldn’t you love to have a magazine that will talk about the gadgets and stuff that will arrive to a store nearby? Having local prices rather than other currencies with a calculator in your hands? I’m sure that you would.

Apple Introduces New Notebooks amed@shufflegazine.com ‫ابل تطلق النوتبوك الجديد‬ On October 14, Apple revealed a new generation of MacBook and MacBook Pro notebooks. Steve Jobs and other Apple executives introduced the latest link in their notebook line, which dates back to 1989 when the Macintosh Portable was born. The history of the Apple notebook family is full of success, details and passion as each generation witnesses an exciting upgrade. One of the physical changes in the new notebooks is the onepiece body. The main idea of the so-called unibody is that one single piece of aluminum that forms the main body of the computer makes it stronger and more sleeker in design. Both the MacBook and the MacBook Pro look similar to the MacBook Air with a rounded aluminum body, and they have the all-glass screens similar to the recent iMac models. The trackpad is also new. It’s all glass and has the mouse button built in. Gone is the physical mouse button we’ve come to know in most notebook models. Apple also introduced a new graphics processor. All three lines of Apple notebooks, including the MacBook Air, now use NVIDIA chips; giving at least five times improved performance. The estimated arrival time of the new generation to our region is November. You can find a detailed review of the new MacBook further on in this issue, and look out for the MacBook Pro review in our December issue.

Porsche Launches New 911 With iPhone Connections In a stylish party in Madinat Jumeirah in October, Porsche launched the new model of the 911 series. Porsche technical engineers and experts said that Targa is the best 911 ever, as witnessed by a host of new technologies like the direct fuel injection system and the new PDK system, which is considered a dramatic upgrade in gear box technology as it gets the best of both manual and automatic transmissions. From Shufflegazine’s point of view, arguably the most interesting news with the 911 upgrade was how much attention Porsche paid to connectivity in general and to iPhone connections in particular. The new 911 models are equipped with the latest version of Porsche Communication Management (PCM), which has Bluetooth, USB, iPod, as well as AUX connections. This means that as soon as you enter your car with an iPhone, you can see all your contacts displayed on the car’s multi-function display. This is not something unique to Porsche as most car manufacturers, especially the stylish brands, have updated their vehicles to be compatible with the latest Apple products such as the iPhone to meet the requirements of their clients. Mini and BMW are just two examples among a growing line of car manufacturers who are introducing similar solutions.

Spotlight ‫سبوت اليت‬ Regardless of the expected fears stemming from the international credit crisis, both international and local IT companies took part at the GITEX TECHNOLOGY WEEK as the number of the participating companies exceeded 3300 from 83 countries. The 18-year-old GITEX Shopper had more than 20000 products on offer in 2008. This included the latest Macs, PCs, iPods, digital cameras, printers, and more. Iomega, an EMC company, launched from their stand at GITEX 2008 the new Iomega eGo Helium portable hard drive USB 2.0 320GB. The drive is a perfect match for the style of the MacBook Air. A spokesperson for the TRA (Telecommunications Regulatory Authority) in the UAE, confirmed that the iPhone had been rejected because it was being introduced in a way contrary to the current monopoly regulations. The spokesperson also said they expect an unlocked iPhone to officially arrive in UAE soon.

Monster Introduces BacteriaFighting Screen Cleaner

Monster expanded their offerings in the ScreenClean line of travel-size bottles of cleaning fluids for notebooks, desktop computers, iPods, iPhones and more. The new ScreenClean product comes with antimicrobial cleaning cloths, enhanced with what they call AEGIS Micro Shield Technology. These can be used to polish screens and control potentially harmful bacteria and other microorganisms at the same time. In addition, the powerful new ScreenClean cleaning solution leaves screens clean and streak-free, and comes in travel-sized bottles that are easy to carry and fit into a pocket or small bag. This should be welcome news for all clean Apple fans.

Adobe and WinSoft Present CS4 at GITEX

As has become common practice for them, Adobe and WinSoft shared stand at GITEX and presented a line of new products with Adobe CS4 getting most of the exposure. They had seminars throughout the week where experts demonstrated their products and where users could ask questions. Adobe Acrobat 9 ME, reviewed in the October issue of Shufflegazine, was one of the new products presented. The ME version, supporting Arabic and a number of other languages, was developed by Adobe’s partner WinSoft. Mohammed Jogie, Design Evangelist at Adobe, said that GITEX week was full of excitement.

Among the main new features of their printers is a new ink set that does not spread harmful volatile organic compounds. They also introduced a new group of scanners with new scanning technologies, including Matrix CCD, Digital ICE technology and the new Ready Scan LED for fast scan speeds. Also Epson launched its latest business-class A4 sheet feed scanner, promising to make life in offices around the region much easier.

‫اختصارًا هناك فجوة كبيرة بين مستخدمي‬ ‫ احد االسباب‬.‫ماك و مستخدمي ويندوز‬ ‫الممكنة لهذة الفجوة وفق تصوري ان كل‬ ‫مستخدمي ماك اختاروا ذلك عن عمد بعكس‬ ‫مستخدمي ويندوز الذين لم يكن لهم دخل‬ ‫في هذا القرار و كأن االمر مجرد عادة يومية او‬ .‫اختيار ما هو شائع‬ ‫هل يجب ان نستمر في استخدام هذا‬ ‫المصطلح؟ هل نحن جميعًا مستخدمين؟؟‬ ‫رأيت في جيتكس محبي ابل و هم يسألون‬ ‫ رأيت‬،‫عن حواسيبهم و االيفون و االيبود‬ ‫اهتمامهم بالتفاصيل حتي عندما ينتقضون‬ .‫ اعتقد ان المسألة اساسًا هي فهم افضل‬.‫ابل‬

The GITEX Technology Week is over; my first GITEX as a Mac user I should add. But hold on! I’ve been feeling a bit confused using the expression ‘Mac user’, so I’ve decided to share with you an idea that came to mind this week during GITEX.

This week I met a lot of Mac users from all over the world, but primarily from the UAE of course. What I’ve realized is that there’s a big difference between calling someone a ‘Mac user’ and calling someone a ‘Windows user’. A Windows user is mostly someone who uses Windows applications to get their work done, without giving much thought to actual details and features of the whole underlying operating system. That is, their main purpose is simply to get things done.

On the other hand a Mac user seems to typically have a minimum level of computer knowledge, allowing them to use and understand better all the applications they deal with. To put it briefly, there is a considerable gap between a Mac user and a Windows user.

‫ كان اول‬،‫انتهي اسبوع جيتكس التقني‬ ‫جيتكس لي كمستخدم ماك و اول ما لفت‬ ‫انتباهي و اصابني بالدهشة هو استخدام‬ ‫مصطلح (مستخدم ماك) لذا رغبت في ان‬ ‫اشارككم بعض االفكار التي راودتني غالبًا‬ .‫بسبب ما رأيتة في جيتكس‬ ‫قابلت خالل هذا االسبوع العديد من‬ ‫مستخدمي جيتكس من شتي بقاع العالم‬ ‫و السيما دولة االمارات و ادركت ان هناك‬ ‫تباين شاسع بين تسمية مستخدم ماك و‬ ‫مستخدم ويندوز اذ ان مصطلح مستخدم‬ ‫شخص ما يستخدم ويندوز‬ ‫ويندوز يعني غالبًا‬ ٌ ‫من اجل القيام بشيء ما بدون االهتمام‬ ‫بالتفاصيل و المالمح الصغيرة لنظام التشغيل‬ ‫ككل و كأن الغرض الرئيسي هو انجاز عمل‬ .‫معين‬

In my estimate, one of the possible reasons for this gap is the ability of choice; Mac users have most likely chosen a Mac of their own will, but most Windows users don’t choose Windows – it is more or less a matter of habit, or the default choice. Should we keep using this expression then, that we’re “users” on both sides? I have seen at GITEX, Apple users inquiring about their Macs, iPhones and iPods and I have noticed that they pay attention to the details, even while criticizing Apple. And I think it’s a matter of better understanding. My answer is that of course we’ll keep on calling both sides “users” but we should recognize the two sides are different. by Amed Adel (amed@shufflegazine.com)

I picked up the last issue and I commend you for trying to include both languages. So few mags here [in the Middle East] try hard at making something that reads well for everyone. I’m from Europe but am trying hard to learn Arabic for my career, so getting information about Apple in Arabic helps me polish what I know. -PO That’s very nice to hear, PO. Q: I have Windows Vista installed on my MacBook Pro using BootCamp. And it’s great! I don’t use it much so booting into it is fine, but I want to be able to share some files between the Windows and the Mac and I can’t write to the BootCamp disk. What can I do? A: Most likely you can’t write to your BootCamp disk from Mac OS X because the Windows partition is formatted as NTFS, the file system introduced with Windows NT. Mac OS X can read from but not write to NTFS volumes. Luckily there is MacFuse (http://code.google.com/p/macfuse/), which in combination with NTFS-3G (http:// www.ntfs-3g.org/) will give you access to write to the NTFS formatted BootCamp volume. Q: I have Windows on my MacBook with Fusion. The Windows disk isn’t very big (10GB I think), but I want to back it up. How do I do that in the best way?

Q: The only Windows application I want to run on my Mac is IE6 (Internet Explorer) to check some web sites I’m working on. How do I do that in the simplest way? A: If you only have one or a few Windows applications you need to run, then a good option is CrossOver Mac from CodeWeavers (http://www.codeweavers.com/products/cxmac/). Instead of running a complete installation of Windows, CrossOver supports running a number of compatible Windows applications, including Microsoft Office, IE, etc. Q: Whenever I connect to a Windows box at work with FTP or just the Finder,

there’s a file called “Thumbs.db” everywhere. I didn’t put it there and even if I remove it, it usually appears again. What is this file and how can I remove it? A: The “Thumbs.db” file is a cache file created by Windows, helping it to display thumbnails of picture files in the particular folder. It’s invisible in Windows but not in Mac OS X. Similarly, the Finder in Mac OS X has created an invisible file called “.DS_ Store” in each folder to keep track of the settings for that folder. There are ways of dealing with both types of files. I can’t write to the BootCamp disk.

A: The easiest way of doing this is to just copy the virtual machines you want to back up with the Finder. The default location is Users/User Name/Documents/Virtual Machine and you should copy the “vmwarevm” bundle. It contains all the files for your virtual machine. If you have several virtual operating systems installed, you obviously should copy them all. You can copy these files to an external hard drive, DVD, or other destination - depending on the size of the OS you’re copying. If you run Time Machine, your virtual OS will also be backed up.

Sales of Mac virtualization software this year in the U.S. are up 50 percent so far in 2008, with estimated sales for this year ranging between $15 and $20 million. This is all the more astonishing when you consider that Macs represent only about 10 percent of total computer market share in North America. For the uninitiated, virtualization software allows you to run your favorite Windows applications side by side with Mac applications on Mac OS X, where all virtualization components are created via the software and stored in files on your Mac.

So why would a switcher choose to purchase and run virtualization software? Even hardened Apple fans admit that not all of the best applications are available on a Mac (MS Project and MS Visio spring to mind). For users more concerned with using the best application to get the job done than they are about its operating system, virtualization software is a boon. Also, consider its usefulness for those forced into needing to work with Microsoft SQL Servers or web developers needing to test crossplatform websites. Perhaps the best explanation for this sudden increase in virtualization sales is that it coincides with an explosion in Mac switchers: This software serves as a pleasant security blanket for the switcher, allowing them to still run their old Windows games, or serving as a stop gap for niche software that they can’t find for their Mac. After years of acquiring Windows software it’s hardly surprising that switchers are reluctant to “let go”. Still, if my own experience is anything to go by, switchers soon get used to their Mac applications and have switched before realizing it has happened. REVIEWS | What a gorgeous piece of computing equipment! That’s my first statement about the new MacBook from Apple. This fits perfectly with Dubai’s increasing apatite for high tech and good design. The second is that this is a very fast little computer. I could really end this review here, because these are the two main things you need to know about the updated MacBook line – but of course I won’t. We tested the MacBook with 2.4GHz, 4MB RAM and 128GB SSD. To put it simply, this is one smoking computer. The all-aluminum exterior is a combination of the MacBook Air and the iMac. From the iMac comes the look of the all-glass display front with a black border, and from the MacBook Air come the aluminum bottom and the black keyboard. Apple calls the main part of the MacBook a unibody construction because it’s made out of one solid piece of aluminum, making the notebook stronger.

One aspect of the new design I was somewhat doubtful about was the glass trackpad. Having just one large surface without any physical button didn’t seem an appealing idea to me, but after using it for a few days I can tell you these doubts were unfounded. I’m still getting used to using some of the multi-finger gestures, but this is how all notebooks should be designed. The higher-end model (2.4GHz) comes with the same illuminated keyboard as the new MacBook Pros, something I personally really value. For storage and memory the main news is that you can now get a solid-state drive as an option. The standard hard drives are 160GB, 250GB or 320GB, and there is of course a SuperDrive as well. Graphics performance is much improved with the NVIDIA 9400M graphics processor; Apple claims it’s five times faster than the previous integrated Intel graphics, and that may well be true. See “3D Performance” for more details.

Overall the new MacBook feels very fast and responsive and it should be a good alternative, even for customers who previously opted for MacBook Pros. Although if you depend on the FireWire port you may want to wait a bit; Apple has removed it from the MacBook, causing uproar among some users. For me it’s not a big deal as I do fine with just USB, but for some it might be a deal-breaker. In terms of connectivity it’s a cool little detail that you can now use Apple’s stereo headset with the MacBook, both for input and output. I’ll use this new MacBook for a few months to see how it goes. Look out for a longerterm experience report from me in a future issue of Shufflegazine. Meanwhile, in the next issue, we’ll return with a review of the new MacBook Pro.

After a long wait, the BlackBerry Bold has arrived in the UAE with Etisalat selling it since some October and Du also now selling it. The Bold is the first BlackBerry with a 3G connection so it offers dramatically improved speeds for email, web, and more. Since it also has Wi-Fi you can almost always have a fast connection, although this reduces the battery life dramatically. And that’s the main drawback of the Bold. With everything turned on you’ll go through a fully-charged battery in a day or less; by turning of Wi-Fi you’ll get much more life out of the device. The screen has the same number of pixels as the iPhone, but they are smaller and packed more densely together. Together with the brightness and contrast it means this is a wonderful display, even outside in the sunlight. The interface has been updated and looks and works better with small animation effects. Obviously it’s no match for the iPhone in terms of interface, but it’s a big step forward for BlackBerry. This new phone feels well built, but some things could have been given more attention; like the fit of the back cover. Overall though, it feels solid to hold and operate. Connecting the Bold to a Mac is no different than previous BlackBerry phones. You basically have two options: the free PocketMac for BlackBerry and the $40 Missing Sync for BlackBerry. My choice is Missing Sync, which offers more functionality and is well worth the price. With the unlimited data plans from Etisalat (AED185 per month for domestic and AED295 per month for international) a BlackBerry is a very sensible choice economically speaking. It may not be up to the iPhone in some areas but it’s a great smartphone, which many of you should find interesting to look at – even if you haven’t been interested in BlackBerry devices before.

iPods NEW

The iPod classic is that trusty old friend you feel comfortable with, and that doesn’t let you down. But the Nano and Touch are cool and hip and amaze you daily. There is little new to say about the iPod classic. Mainly Apple trimmed the model selection so that now there’s only one model with 120GB disk. Apple also made the click wheel’s surface a bit rougher, making it easier to operate. The other news can be found in the software update, which brings the Genius automated play list creation to the Classic. If you need storage space for movies, music, or files, this is still a great iPod - but the model is starting to show its age and probably will not be with us for much longer.

In a strange turn of events the 4th generation iPod nano has actually gone back to what the 2nd generation looked like; with an elongated, rectangular face. It has an oval shaped, thin profile, making this an incredibly small and light iPod. The display seems to be the same 320×240 pixel display from the previous generation, but its form factor demands it be placed in a portrait direction. This means to watch video you turn the Nano on its side. With the built-in accelerometer, which senses how you turn and move the iPod nano, you can shake the Nano from side to side to shuffle songs in a play list. Another addition is that you can record voice memos with a compatible external microphone, such as Apple’s new headset. Through the new iPod software it supports the Genius automatic playlist generator. iPod touch The 2nd generation iPod touch has three main new things to its credit: speaker, physical volume control, and the new iPod software. Although a welcome addition, the speaker is only really usable for gaming as the sound is too weak and thin for movies or music. With a rounder, beveled back the new iPod touch is more pleasant to hold and operate than the previous model, and the volume control on the side is almost worth an upgrade just on its own. Battery life doesn’t seem to have increased any; you still run out of juice

very fast, especially with Wi-Fi turned on. Most of the other news, like with the two other new iPod models, lies in the iPod software upgrade. Things like the Genius automatic play list generator and complete Nike+iPod integration are great additions. If you want more storage space the new Touch offers models with 8GB, 16GB, or 32GB. To give a final verdict, if you have a 1st generation iPod touch there is frankly little reason to spend money on upgrading. But if this is your first iPod touch, it’s a great iPod combined with most of the benefits of the iPhone.

OtterBox Defender Cases for iPhone 3G and BlackBerry Bold Otterbox is arguably a relatively unknown brand in our region, but is well established in other parts of the world and there is plenty of reason for that. They make very particular products for mobile devices. Especially their Defender line of cases, which offers excellent protection with a multi-layered construction. We have been using the Otterbox Defender cases for iPhone 3G as well as BlackBerry Bold for some time now. The two cases are pretty much the same, with the one exception being that the iPhone case has a built-in plastic cover that covers the screen. For the BlackBerry you first wrap a plastic sheet around the device, before putting on the rest of the case. The iPhone’s touch screen is usable through the protective plastic, which surprised me a bit at first. With its multi-layered approach, immediately around the device is a hard plastic case that leaves holes where important controls and plugs are. On the BlackBerry this hard plas-

tic case hugs a bit too close to the edges of the keyboard, so some keys are a bit tricky to press - but it’s no big problem. Wrapped around the hard case is also a layer of soft rubber material. This protects the device from serious impact, such as dropping it. Both cases offer excellent protection for the respective devices, but they also add a lot of bulk and some weight, especially taking into account the holster case. That’s a definite downside. Also for the BlackBerry, since it has an exchangeable battery, you have to take it out of the Otterbox case before you can get to the battery, which can be a hassle. These cases are not dust or waterproof, but for protection of your valuable iPhone 3G or BlackBerry Bold, they are just about as good as it gets, and that’s not bad. We’ve not found them sold anywhere in our region, but hopefully someone will pick up the distribution soon.

‫| ‪REVIEWS‬‬ ‫اوتربوكس (‪ )Otterbox‬يعتبر اسم غير معروف نسبيًا‬ ‫في منطقتنا اال انة من االسماء المعروفة في مناطق‬ ‫اخري بالعالم و هذا يرجع الي عدة اسباب حيث يقدمون‬ ‫منتجات متخصصة الجهزة الهاتف النقال و خاصة خط‬ ‫انتاج دفندر لحافظات الوقاية اذ يقدم حماية فائقة‬ ‫و يتكون من طبقات متعددة‪ .‬لقد قمنا باستعمال‬ ‫حافظات اوتربوكس ديفندر الخاصة بااليفون ثري جي و‬ ‫البالكبري بولد لبعض الوقت‪.‬‬ ‫الحافظاتان متشابهاتان الي حد كبير باستثناء امر‬ ‫واحد و هو ان حافظة االيفون بها غطاء بالستكي‬ ‫يغطي الشاشة اما البالكبري عوضًا عن ذلك بة قطعة‬ ‫بالستيكية يتم لف الجهاز بها قبل وضعة في الحافظة‪.‬‬ ‫شاشة االيبود تاتش يمكن استخدامها عبر الحافظة‬ ‫البالستيكية مما اصابني بالدهشة في البداية‪.‬‬ ‫باستخدام اسلوب الطبقات نجد او ً‬ ‫ال طبقة بالستيكية‬ ‫صلبة تلف الجهاز و بها ثقوب عند مداخل الكابالت اما‬ ‫في البالكبري فان الطبق البالستيكية الصلبة تقترب من‬ ‫حافة لوحة االزرار مما يجعل من الصعب الضغط علي‬ ‫بعضها اال ان االمر ال يمثل مشكلة كبيرة بعد ذلك نجد‬ ‫حول الطبقة الصلبة طبقة اخري لينة تحمي الجهاز من‬ ‫اسوأ الصدمات كإن يقع منك مث ً‬ ‫ال‪.‬‬ ‫كال الحافظتان يوفران حماية فائقة للجهاز اال انهم‬ ‫يزيدان من الحجم و الوزن و خاصة الحافظة الجلدية‬ ‫اذ يزيد الحجم و الوزن بشكل كبير و هذا هو العيب‬ ‫الوحيد‪ ،‬كذلك نجد البالكبري يجب ان تخرجة من‬ ‫الحافظة اذا ما اردت تغيير البطارية مما يسبب بعض‬ ‫الصعوبة‪.‬‬ ‫هذة الحافظات ال تحمي من الماء و التراب اال انها جيدة‬ ‫لحماية جهازك االيفون القيم او البالكبري‪ ،‬حتي االن لم‬ ‫نري كالهما يباع في المنطقة اال اننا نأمل ان يحصل احد‬ ‫االشخاص علي توكيلهم التجاري قريبًا‪.‬‬

In 2006 Apple changed the processors they use in all Macs from the PowerPC line to processors made by Intel. With all currently available Macs they all run pretty much the same processors that you find in Windows PCs. This means that you can run Windows and Windows applications on your Mac without too much effort. We present to you a number of options for how you can run Windows on your Mac. First we go through what Apple offers with their BootCamp solution, then we look at two commercial systems, Parallels Desktop for Mac and VMWare Fusion. Whatever the reason you might want to run Windows on your Mac, we hope we can present you with something that suits you.

Apple Boot Camp 36 | FEATURE

Boot Camp (http://tinyurl.com/2h778w), first released in 2006, is Apple’s free solution for running Windows on your Mac. Basically you first set aside a certain amount of space on your Mac’s hard drive. Using Boot Camp you then install Windows to that partition, so that you can run Windows by booting into it. You need a licensed copy of Windows for Boot Camp to work. The main benefit of Boot Camp is that it’s free (except the Windows license), the main drawback is that you have to reboot the Mac to switch operating system.

The Boot Camp Volume Once installed on an NTFS partition (NTFS is the preferred format) you can copy files from the Boot Camp, disk but you can’t copy files to it. There are ways to get around that issue. See the Certified Apple Doctor article in this issue of Shufflegazine for more information on this.

FEATURE | Preparations It’s best to install Boot Camp on a new Mac OS X installation. The longer a Mac OS X disk has been used, the more problems it can cause when you want to partition it for Boot Camp. Also running Disk Utility to Repair Permissions is a good idea before trying to install Boot Camp, to make sure you’re disk is in good condition.

Reboot You can either set which partition to boot from with the Startup Disk pane in System Preferences, or you can press the Alt key on the keyboard when booting to select which operating system to start up.

Right-Click You can right-click when running Windows on your Mac with Boot Camp using an Apple Mighty Mouse by just clicking on the right side of the mouse. If you are using a portable Mac computer, you can also right-click using the trackpad by placing two fingers on the trackpad and clicking the trackpad button.

Unity If you run Windows applications with Fusion all the time, you might be more comfortable running them in Unity mode. The same functionality exists in Fusion.

Q: Is Fusion your first Mac product and do you find that the Apple/Mac market is different in any way from the markets you’re used to? A: Yes, while VMware is an old player in the virtualization market, Fusion is our first Mac product – the first version was released in 2007. We find that Mac users are significantly tech-savvy and “get” virtualization very early on. Virtualization is increasingly becoming a part of their first Mac purchase; they realize that there will continue to be legacy Windows applications or USB devices they need, and they’d like to be able to run these side-by-side with their Mac environment. Q: Finally, a lot of people are buying a Mac for the first time, so-called ‘switchers’. Why should a switcher wanting to run Windows on their Mac buy VMWare Fusion? A: With version two of Fusion, we’ve added more than a hundred new features and enhancements. Our primary focus was on creating a seamless user experience, protection and power. Fusion makes switching to Mac a snap by breaking down the barriers between Mac and Windows. By letting switchers bring all their existing Windows applications and devices along as they switch, VMware Fusion allows them to run the Windows software that they need, while enjoying the Mac experience that they want.

Do you want to play games?

If you’re really serious about the latest games and primarily 3D games then Boot Camp is your choice.

Are you low on RAM (less than 1GB)? If you don’t have a lot of RAM, let’s say 1GB or less, you will be hard pressed to run Fusion or Parallels comfortably, so Boot Camp is your choice.

Then it has to be Fusion or Parallels.

Do you want to run operating systems other than Windows?

With Windows running on your Mac it’s important to remember that Windows and Mac keyboards are slightly different. Tip When you take photos that you intend to merge into one HDR image it’s important that they are all taken with the camera in the same exact position. Therefore using a tripod is a must. Also consider the items in the photo, they cannot be moving either since you make several exposures that you later merge in Photoshop. I love HDR (High Dynamic Range). It is a method that brings up all the details in the lightest as well as darkest areas of a photo. Basically, the eye of a digital camera cannot see the same range of colors and light, which we can with our human eye. With HDR we can make a digital image capture more of that range that we can see. I’ve been experimenting with HDR for a while and here I present how I started to learn. HDR support is built-in to PhotoShop CS3, so you can try it now. by Omran omran@shufflegazine.com

Once the pictures are open in Photoshop, you will notice four different levels of brightness in the images. It ranges from really dark to very bright.

Go to File > Automate > Merge to HDR.

In the dialogue box, first click on Add Open Files then click OK.

On the same dialogue, Toning Curve & Histogram > drag the lines as shown above.

You can try different settings but the default often works well. Radius = 16 px and Threshold = 0.50. Click OK and Photoshop goes to work again.

Once processing is finished, you have merged individual exposures into your very own HDR image. With this basic knowledge go out and keep experimenting.

If you think 5GB would be enough, double it to 10GB or even more. When Windows is installed you can boot into Windows by setting the startup disk in System Preferences, or by holding down the Alt-key when you boot.
