Isn’t it funny how sometimes you just come up against a situation when you feel like you’re banging your head against a wall without getting anywhere? That happened recently when I was trying to talk to a die-hard Windows user about why he should consider a Mac instead. He argued the same old things: Mac is too expensive, there’s no software for Mac, etc. The same old story we’ve heard for over twenty years now. And to be honest there was really nothing I could tell him that would have convinced him to switch. It was kind of like the two sides dug in at the trenches of the Western Front in World War I. Neither side could really make any advance, even after years of battle. Let’s face it, some people on the other side will never switch – and nor should we want them to. Whether someone picks Windows or Mac is largely up to their personal preference and what makes sense for them in that situation. And Mac is not always the best, or even the desirable choice. That’s where many in the Apple-community go wrong, I think, when trying to argue for Apple and Mac. They think Apple and their products are the magical solution to everything, and they’re not. And the sooner we all realize that, the better. The discussion with potential switchers would then be more realistic, less confrontational and less polarized. We will try to do our best in Shuffle to make that happen.

Apple announces on their MobileMe website that they have now fully restored Mail services.
Apple products appear in around 50% of 2008 number one movies. Removing historic epics from the list, the percentage increases to 67%.

Best Buy, a US electronic retail chain, announces they will be selling iPhone from September
7th. Fire at Apple Headquarters causes no injury, takes 3 hours to extinguish. Reports indicate the fire occurred in the Information Systems and Technology Department. iTunes Movies and Rentals announced in Australia and New Zealand, with over 700 titles. Prices for movies start at AU$9.99, and at AU$5.99 for new release rentals. Rentals appear to be for 48 hours, compared to 24 hours in US.

Missing Instructions
More Arabic
In your iWeb Tips and Tricks article in the last issue, you outlined how to include a Flash movie by uploading its SWF file into the iWeb site’s folder on your MobileMe account. However, I don’t have a MobileMe account and the Flash movie file wouldn’t play when I published my site to a folder for regular FTP upload. Could Shuffle please try to include a tutorial about how to overcome this problem in a future issue? -KL
I’ve been seeing Shuffle a few times at the store here in Saudi Arabia and I think it’s great what you’re doing. But when I talk to others here they indicate they want more Arabic. We need to read in our language, not just English. -AA
Good idea, KL. That was something we also felt that we didn’t cover in enough detail – but we didn’t have the room to go into it further. We will put it on the article schedule for a future issue. -Editor
We’ve been working hard on the Arabic in Shuffle, AA. Since September 2007 we’ve consistently had Arabic in Shuffle. If you want to see more Arabic, please ask some of your friends to consider writing some articles in Arabic for Shuffle. That would certainly help. -Editor

Mac Models 101 Selecting what Mac to buy can sometimes be daunting, especially if you’re new to Macs. Therefore we put together this short guide to the different models of Macintosh computers currently on offer from Apple. This guide only offers some brief pointers. To evaluate what you should buy, we advice you spend some time with the Mac in a store.
MacBook Air The MacBook Air is definitely the ultimate Mac in terms of portability. But even though it weighs in at about 1kg, it’s no lightweight in terms of performance. With a processor from 1.6GHz, 2GB RAM, and 80GB hard drive it should perform most tasks with east. An external SuperDrive is optional.Price: from AED8199.
MacBook The main attraction of the MacBook is obviously its size. It has a 13.3-inch display which has enough resolution for most things (but is limited for tasks such as design), a Core2Duo processor of up to 2.2GHz, RAM up to 4GB, and a hard drive up to 250GB. The MacBook is a lot of power in a small package. If mobility is your primary concern, this is your choice. Price: from AED4999.
MacBook Pro For the technology you can find inside them, the MacBook Pros are surprisingly compact. But no one can say that the 17-inch model is light and easy to transport. The 15-inch model is slightly smaller, and both sport a gorgeous, large display. It has up to 2.6GHz Core2Duo processors, 4GB or RAM, and 250GB of hard drive. If its power and large screens you want, MacBook Pro is your choice. Price: from AED7999.
Mac mini The introductory model, petite as it is, still packs quite a punch. Don’t take its small size as a sign that it’s slow. It comes with a Core2Duo processor of up to 2.0GHz, which is plenty for most things you’d want to do. It can also take up to 2GB RAM and 160GB hard drive as well as a SuperDrive. Its limitation lies in that it’s very hard to upgrade, and it has integrated Intel graphics, so don’t expect to play the latest 3D games on a mini. Price: from AED2699.
iMac The ultimate home desktop computer, the iMac is the all-in-one that packs a punch. You can get a 20 or 24-inch screen, up to 3.06GHz, up to 4GB of RAM, and 1TB of hard drive. The iMac’s selling point is the integrated package, which also happens to look really awesome. Price: from AED6199.
For the ultimate in power and flexibility, you can’t beat Mac Pro but it’s not cheap. You can get it up to an eightcore configuration, 16GB RAM, four 750GB hard drives, and two optical drives. You also have a selection when it comes to graphics card. Price: from AED11999.

Mac Pro
iPod Models 101 As with buying a Mac, selecting what iPod to buy is not always easy. In every issue of Shuffle we present the current models of Apple’s iPods, what their main features are, and the starting price. Hopefully this can serve as a simple and quick guide to the iPods so you can make a more informed buying decision.
iPod Touch This is iPhone without the phone. You get wifi for web browsing with Safari, full-featured iPod of course for music and video, and the wonderful iPhone multitouch interface. Comes in 8GB and 16GB versions Price: from AED1399.
iPod Classic
iPod Nano Available in different colors, the Nano is the ultimate fashion accessory. With a wonderfully crisp display it can play video and the small size means you can slip it into your pocket and take it anywhere. Comes in 4GB and 8GB versions in five different colors. Price: from AED649.
This is the iPod we have known and loved for so many years, hence the name Classic. With a large display, plenty of storage space, this is still the king of the iPods even though many new models have been released. Comes in versions of 80GB and 160GB and is available in silver and black. Price: from AED1199.
iPod Shuffle This miniscule iPod is different from the other iPods not just in terms of size and price but in the fact that it has no display. The idea is that you listen to music on the go and it shuffles through the songs. There’s even an handy feature in iTunes that will always put a different combination of songs on it when you sync. Price: AED329.

Apple TV Although it’s not an iPod we present it here as it seems Apple feels the Apple TV is in the same family. With 40GB or 160GB storage capacity, the Apple TV can take all your music, podcasts, and movies. The multimedia can be synchronized from one iTunes library on a Mac or PC, or streamed from up to five other computers. It’s the easiest way to get your multimedia content onto a TV. Price: from AED1399.

The information pane at the bottom left will show you some information about what is currently selected.
Here you will find some tools for creating new albums, showing the information pane, playing slideshow and more.
This is the normal tools in iPhoto. If you click on Edit you will edit the highlighted photo.
In Edit Mode, you will see a toolbar with different icons on it. Here you find Effects, Rotare, Crop, Retouch and more.

Overview With the Retouch tool you can with just a click remove unwanted parts of a picture, but it only works well with small areas.
I think it’s safe to say that iPhoto is the best known application in Apple’s iLife suite and probably deservedly so. It’s the application that most people would find really useful as so many among you have digital cameras. In this issue we want to give you a quick overview of iPhoto’s interface and offer you some simple suggestions that might make you get more out of using iPhoto. The Adjustment window is a powerful tool for changing various aspects of a photo. It has controls similar to much more advanced programs.

: a Quick Overview
This is the main work area where you can choose to display one photo, put a number of photos side by side to compare them, and more. This is also where you would work with a Light Table.
With the Loupe tool you can quickly see details in your photo. This enables you to quickly judge whether a particular shot is sharp, for example.

Some features you’ve come to know from iPhoto are also in Aperture, such as creating web albums, books, calendars, and more.
On the left side you find all your albums, rolls, books, calendars, etc. that you have imported or created. You can move and copy photos between them, and even set up Smart Albums that can automatically keep track of photos with certan characteristics, such as a particular keyword.
A Vault is a copy of your Aperture library, and you can any number of Vaults on different drives. Aperture indicated when a Vault is out of sync with your main library,

You can also show the Adjustments panel as a floating window, which gives you access all the time to the powerful features here. When showing it as a floating window it also shows you more options than if you have it docked as a sidebar.
This area displays all photos in the currently selected roll, album, book, etc. If you have stacked photos, you can see the individual stacks and how many photos are in each. The photo that shows on the stack is the one you have currently selected as the best in that stack.

Nowadays, switchers are as likely to be coming from a Windows Vista operating system as they are from Windows XP. And to be fair, the boys at Microsoft have come a long way regarding photo management with Windows Photo Gallery. So what pitfalls and advantages should the switcher expect from a transition to iPhoto? Essentially a photo management tool, Windows Photo Gallery enables basic image editing, tagging and the adding of captions. You can also create slide shows of photos, print them via the Print Wizard, compress images before attaching them to emails, or order copies of your photos online. All these same features are present in iPhoto. However, unlike iPhoto, you can’t edit or adjust images in Windows Photo Gallery unless they are in the JPEG format. Another shortcoming is that Windows Photo Gallery lacks the options present in iPhoto to create a book, calendar, or card directly from the application. Furthermore, slideshows created using iPhoto allow for more customized transitions between photos and for music to be added from the iTunes library that plays during the slideshow - features not available in Windows Photo Gallery. However, the switcher is sure to miss Window Photo Gallery’s left-hand navigation bar, which employs Window’s familiar folder/sub-folder structure. Such a structure is not supported in iPhoto; If you happen to have your pictures organized into folders and subfolders, iPhoto will ignore any folder structure you have upon import, and only uses the parent folder of where the images are located as the event name. With iPhoto, the switcher also loses control over file names and the ability to permanently rename them: When importing images directly from your camera, iPhoto keeps the same file names that your camera gave the photos (usually a series of letters and numbers). Although there is a batch change feature that allows you to change the name of a photo as it appears in iPhoto, it won’t change the actual file name. This becomes problematic when trying to locate an image for editing using third-party software like Photoshop (e.g. an image named “birthday01” in iPhoto will appear as file DSC00151.JPG to Photoshop). Despite the above grievances that switchers might have regarding loss of file management control to iPhoto, they will greatly benefit from its seamless integration with other iLife applications - an integration that actually creates new uses for iPhoto as a source of content for iMovie, iWeb, and for iDVD. by Brian Nielsen

You know the cool interfaces and looks Apple creates in their software and on their web site? It’s often shiny, glossy, has shadows and reflections are everywhere. You can make reflections yourself really easy in applications like KeyBote and Pages just by clicking one button. It’s not quite that easy in Photoshop but we’ll show you how you can create a high-quality reflection in just a few easy steps. We’ll work with a text but the same principle can be applied to a photograph.

Open or create the picture you are going to work with. In our case we start with a bit of white text on a black background. Note that the text and the background are on separate layers.
Select the text layer, and in the drop down menu for the Layers palette select Duplicate Layer to make a copy of it.
Give the duplicate layer a name. I’m going to call it “shuffle reflection” because this layer will be the reflection of the text.

Move the “shuffle reflection” text down a bit so it approximately meets up with the bottom of the “shuffle” text.
With the “shuffle reflection” layer selected, go to Layer > Rasterize > Type. This turns the reflection text into a graphic. Now you can no longer edit the text.
Still with the “shuffle reflection” layer selected, go to Edit > Transform > Flip Vertical.

Position the cursor in the reflection and click and drag it down. Release and you’ll see the effect. You will have to try this step a few times to get it right. You can also start dragging outside the reflection text if you want.
You can now notice that the mask icon in the Layers Palette has changed to look like a gradient.
Now you can crop, flatten and export the finished picture as desired and use it on the web, or wherever else you want.

Printing Availability of supplies

There’s nothing more frustrating than trying to hunt down ink, paper and other supplies when you want to print. Make sure supplies for your printer are readily available in a convenient location.
Connections The typical way a printer connects is via USB cable. Many printers also connect via Ethernet cable or WiFi. Ethernet cable and Wi-Fi offers flexibility in terms of where the printer is located, since it doesn’t have to be plugged into a computer.

Drivers Finally, you want to make sure that the printer you pick comes with the proper drivers for your Mac. Without drivers you typically can’t print at all, or can only print with reduced quality or functionality.
Paper size You might want to buy a printer that can print one size larger than you think you want to print. So if you think you want to print nothing larger than A4, get a printer that can print A3. It’ll be a bit more money but then you can grow into it.
Full bleed A printer that can handle full bleed can print a photograph stretching all the way out to the edge of the paper.
This means it doesn’t leave a white border around the photo. This is of course not of vital importance but something to consider.
Number of cartridges

Basically you want a printer that has separate cartridges for separate colors. Then, if you run out of one, you don’t have to replace all. This can save you a lot of money in the long run.
Archival ink If you want to print photos and you want to them to keep their color for a long time, you want archival ink. This is available for pretty much all printers, but not all. Also the paper you use needs to be of archival quality to reach the best possible quality and longevity.

A: You can check out detailed specs of your particular computer using the Apple Specs Database - http://www.info.apple.com/support/applespec. html . Enter the serial number of your computer into the field box indicated on this web page; Locate this serial No. by clicking Apple Menu > About this Mac > More Info. Electrical specifications will be displayed, along with other detailed info. about your particular model. Don’t you just love Apple support? Q: My PC is connected to the Internet through a cable to a router (Etisalat Siemens Speedstream). The router also has a wireless connection, and I can connect my Dell Windows XP laptop to the Internet wirelessly through the router (so I know it works). Now, I’m trying to get my Mac Mini to do the same, i.e. connect to the wireless router. The Mac Mini has Airport installed and Airport is switched on. A: We get this question a lot at EmiratesMac.com and the common answer is to buy another router. The Etisalat-provided one often seems to have problems with Macs. I’d recommend a Linksys, which is a DSL-modem, Wi-Fi access point and router in one box. If that’s not an option, I would suggest you try the Wi-Fi without security first then add various security levels back one by one. Also try moving the Mac closer to the access point and see if that helps.
Q: Is there a way without using iPhoto that I can rename multiple files in one go? I selected all the files I wanted to change and selected “Get Info”, but it only seemed like I could change them one at a time. A: Perhaps you should use A Better Finder Rename (http://tinyurl.com/33yej)? I haven’t tried it myself, but it seems like it should do the trick. There’s always the Terminal of course, but that’s more complicated.
A: It’s actually pretty easy. Reboot your Mac with the installation DVD inserted. Hold down the C-key after the startup sound. Then Select Disk Utility from the Tools menu once the Mac has started up and you can reformat your drive and install a clean Mac OS X. This will wipe your drive clean, so if you have anything you need to save then backup before doing it.

Think of it as the precursor to iPhone, if you like. The 120 model of the MessagePad line of Newton PDAs was introduced in 1994, and discontinued almost two years later. At the time, it ran an impressive 20MHz processor and had a 320×240 pixels pressure-sensitive monochrome display, which you used mainly with the provided stylus. For communication it had infrared beaming capabilities, AppelTalk port for connecting to a computer, and you could expand it with various types of PC-cards. It was revolutionary in many ways, not the least some of the “intelligence” built into its operating system, NewtonOS, which could recognize your handwriting as well as make sense of the context of a piece of information, thereby picking the appropriate action. For example, writing “Dinner tomorrow 8pm”, would result in a calendar entry for dinner tomorrow at 8pm. Sun Microsystems and Apple Computer have a long history together. Sun considered buying Apple in the mid-1990s, the companies also nearly merged on two other occasions, as well as almost co-operating on a number of technical projects, according to Bill Joy, one of Sun’s founders. Both companies have always been the maverick of their markets, relying on quality products and innovation over the power of mass marketing. The Sun of 2008 is much more than the Unix workstation and server company of the mid 90s, with a product range that encompasses everything from the Java programming language, to business integration software, thin client technology and x64 servers. Solaris, Sun’s Unix operating system, is the platform of choice for telcos, banks and business customers around the world. Gil Amelio was in charge at Apple when Sun looked at buying the company in 1996. With Steve Jobs back we’ve all seen Apple’s star rise again – the iPod, the move to OS X, the move to Intel, etc. Shuffle readers are well aware of what our favourite consumer tech company has achieved. In recent years, co-operation between Sun and Apple has continued. Apple have integrated Sun’s open source Dtrace code into OS X. Dtrace helps programmers diagnose performance bottlenecks in their code. Apple have also integrated Sun’s open source 128bit ZFS file system into OS X server. ZFS allows for TBs of storage to be easily managed across multiple drives with no single point of failure. How else are Sun and Apple co-operating? The clue lies in the MacBook I’m using to write this article. For years, particularly since the advent of the Unix based OS X, Sun engineers have preferred Macs over the Windows or Linux alternative. Non-travelling employees use a Sun Ray thin client to access a Solaris desktop. Company issued laptops, however, have always been Toshibas. Over the last few months however, Macs have been added as an option.

Every Sun office I visit these days has employees poring over their shiny new Macs. Internal aliases have been set up for Mac newbies – most new owners at Sun are using a Mac for the first time in many years, myself included. We’re also finding ourselves buying other Apple products for our own personal use as well. Who knows what might have happened had the mergers gone ahead? Either way, thanks to Sun, I’ve been able to switch. What if I get fed up with OS X? Well, I can always put OpenSolaris on this lovely Apple branded piece of hardware.

Apple Potato Salad With Beef Bacon
Recipe:
Ingredients 5 thick strips beef bacon 1 large red or yellow onion, chopped Salt 2 Golden Delicious apples, peeled, cored, and cut in 1/2-inch dice 3 pounds small yellow Yukon Gold potatoes, quartered 4 green onions, thinly sliced, including the greens 1/2 cup olive oil 1/4 cup red wine vinegar 1/4 cup Dijon mustard 1 Tbsp chopped fresh thyme or 1 teaspoon dried 1 1/2 teaspoons pepper
Method 1 Combine the potatoes and enough cold water to cover them by a couple of inches in a large saucepan. Add a generous pinch of salt. Bring to a boil, lower the heat, and cover
the pan. Simmer for 15 minutes or until the potatoes are tender when pierced with a fork. Drain well. 2 While the potatoes are cooking, cook the bacon in a heavy-based skillet over medium heat. Once cooked, remove the beef bacon to a plate lined with paper towels. Reserve the bacon fat in the pan. Once the bacon is cool, chop it. 3 Cook the onion in the fat in the pan on medium heat, until softened and just starting to brown, about 5 minutes. Use a slotted spoon to remove the onion from the pan to a large bowl, set aside. Add the chopped apple to the bowl. 4 Add the potatoes and chopped beef bacon to the onions and apple. Add the green onions, olive oil, vinegar, mustard, and thyme. Salt and pepper to taste. Serve either warm, room temperature, or cold.

Create your document and consider carefully how you want it to appear on the web. Remember what works in print doesn’t always work on the web.
You can work away normally in Word, but if you switch to the Web Layout mode you will find it easier to create nice web pages. You switch mode by going to View > Web Layout.
If you type in a hyperlink, e.g. “http://www.emiratesmac.com” and hit enter, Word will recognize it as a hyperlink and make it blue and underlined. If you need to edit a hyperlink, right-click on it and select Hyperlink > Edit Hyperlink.

When you’re happy with your web page, go to File > Save as Web page.
In the dialog box that opens, click the Web Options button. Here you can enter a title for the page and keywords. Click the OK button and then the Save button.
Now you can upload your web page to a server so it’s published online.
