Did you notice that our October issue was the one-year anniversary of Shufflegazine as a commercial magazine? It’s funny, but all of us working on the magazine hardly noticed; it’s been such a busy time with GITEX and everything. One year in a very tough market is an accomplishment, and I’d like to send a big thank you to everyone that’s been involved with Shufflegazine during the year. It’s been a crazy ride, but we’re very proud of what we’ve accomplished. We certainly look forward to many more years of bringing you Apple and technology coverage in the way we’ve been doing it for a year. Hopefully, we can improve and expand on what we’re doing, and we hope that you keep on sending us your feedback and ideas. This year, with Ramadan and Eid so close to the summer holidays, it seemed like we had an extended period of relative quiet and calm, and now tech companies are revving up their product launches. That’ll keep me very busy, as well as Shufflegazine full of exciting tech stuff with a focus on an Apple lifestyle. With our gadget reviews in The National and gadget radio segment on Dubai Eye 103.8 FM, we reach an increasingly wide audience. That’s a good thing if you’re an Apple fan, as you now have someone on your side in your struggle to spread the good word about Apple and their products to more users. So, it’s with great anticipation we look forward to another year of working with excited and passionate Apple fans around the Middle East.

du and Etisalat launch iPhone 3GS in UAE After Apple announced at WWDC in June that the UAE would get iPhone 3GS in August, fans have been waiting with increasing impatience on the arrival of Apple’s latest iPhone model. Now it has finally been released in the UAE by both du and Etisalat. Etisalat was first out of the gate taking pre-orders on October 16, but du followed closely by opening for pre-orders the following day, just past midnight. Prices of handsets with du are AED 2869 for the 32GB model, AED2459 for the 16GB model, and AED2049 for iPhone 3G 8GB. du offers free data for the first 12 months and five options for plans. Elite Plan Gold includes unlimited data for AED1000 per month, Elite Plan Silver includes unlimited data for AED500 per month, Elite Plan Bronze includes 2GB data for AED200 per month, and Elite Plan Regular includes 1GB data for AED100 per month. There’s also a pay-as-you-go option which has 1GB per month. For the Elite plans you have the chance to pick a fancy/unique mobile phone number. The higher up you go, the more unique a number you can pick. Also, for the Elite plans the monthly charge includes cost of calls and SMS. If you go over that monthly cost, you pay the difference. du will give you AED500 credit back on Elite plans, and AED300 back on pay-as-you-go, given back over 10 months. Etisalat announced on October 24 their iPhone 3GS pricing and that they would launch the handsets on the same day as du, October 27. The price for an 32GB iPhone 3GS with Etisalat is AED2799, the 16GB model is AED2399 and the 8GB iPhone 3G goes for AED1999. Even on the day of the launch Etisalat still had not announced any prices or other details of plans. When Shufflegazine visited an Etisalat store they showed us handsets and said they had “plenty of stock”, but no plans yet. A sales person said there is “no need” for a plan, but plans are “coming soon.” What the reason is for holding Etisalat’s iPhone plans back we don’t know, and a call to an Etisalat PR representative didn’t reveal anything further.
Bilal Mahmoud was one of the first customers in the du shop in Dubai Mall on the morning of the launch. He picked up two iPhone 3GS 32GB and said he already had an iPhone 3GS, but it was software unlocked so he now looked forward to a factory unlocked one because it meant fewer problems with updating the software. Bilal told us he picked du over Etisalat since his friends had told him the Etisalat iPhones were locked. «آي فون ثري جي إس» يصل إلى اإلمارات العربية المتحدة من كل من «دو» و «إتصاالت» بعد أن أعلنت «آبل» خالل المؤتمر العالمي لمطوري البرامج WWDCفي يونيو أن «آي فون ثري جي إس» سيصل إلى اإلمارات العربية المتحدة في أغسطس ،انتظره عشاق «آبل» هنا بفارغ الصبر على مدى الشهرين األخيرين .واآلن فقط تم إطالقه من قبل شركتي االتصاالت «دو» و«إتصاالت» .كانت «إتصاالت» هي السباقة ،حيث فتحت المجال الستقبال الطلبات المسبقة في ١٦أكتوبر ،ولكن «دو» وصلت في أعقابها حيث بدأت باستقبال الطلبات المسبقة في اليوم التالي ،أي بعد منتصف الليل .تترواح أسعار الهاتف عند «دو» ،بين ٢٨٦٩درهمًا للطراز ذو ٣٢غيغا بايت ،و ٢٤٥٩درهمًا للطراز ذو ١٦ غيغا بايت ،بينما بلغ سعر الطراز «آي فون ثري جي» ذو ٨غيغا بايت إلى ٢٠٤٩درهم .تقدم «دو» باقة بيانات مجانية في العام األول ،مع ٥خيارات من باقات االشتراك .يبلغ سعر باقة االشتراك المميز الذهبي ١٠٠٠درهم في الشهر الواحد ،وتتضمن بيانات غير محدودة ،بينما يصل سعر البيانات الغير محدودة مع باقة االشتراك المميز الفضي إلى ٥٠٠درهم .بينما تشمل باقة االشتراك المميز البرونزي ٢غيغا بايت مقابل ٢٠٠درهم في الشهر ،أما باقة االشتراك المميز العادي فتشمل ١غيغا بايت من البيانات في الشهر مقابل ١٠٠درهم .كذلك توفر «دو» خيار الدفع الفوري .بالنسبة لالشتراك المميز ،ما تقدمه هذه الباقات للمستخدم هو إمكانية اختيار رقم مميز ،تزداد خصوصيته كلما ارتفع مستوى الباقة .كذلك ،تشمل رسوم هذه الباقات جميع المكالمات والرسائل الفورية ،وإن تجاوز المستخدم هذا الحد ،توجب عليه دفع الفرق .تعد «دو» بإعادة ٥٠٠درهم للرصيد ألصحاب االشتراك المميز، بينما تعد بإعادة ٣٠٠درهم ألصحاب خطة الدفع الفوري ،وذلك على مدى ١٠شهرور. أما إتصاالت ،فأعلنت عن أسعار «آي فون ثري جي إس» في ٢٤أكتوبر ،ووعدت بإطالق الهاتف في نفس اليوم الذي ستطلقه «دو» .وبلغ سعر الطراز ذو ٣٢غيغا بايت ٢٧٩٩درهمًا ،بينما بلغ سعر الطراز ذو ١٦غيغا بايت إلى ٢٣٩٩درهمًا ،أما «آي فون ثري جي» بسعة ٨غيغا بايت فيبلغ سعره ١٩٩٩درهمًا. وحتى في يوم إطالق الهاتف ،لم تعلن «إتصاالت» عن أسعار الباقات أو خياراتها .وعندما قامت «شفل جازين» بزيارة أحد محالت «إتصاالت» للسؤال عن الهاتف ،قيل لنا أن «هناك أعداد كبيرة من الهواتف في المخازن» ،ولكن ال توجد أي باقات اشتراك حتى اآلن .أحد موظفي المبيعات علق قائ ً ال بأنه «ال داعي ألي باقات ولكننا في صدد إطالقها قريبًا» .ال نعرف السبب وراء تأخر إتصاالت في إطالق خيارات باقاتها ،ولم يكشف لنا إتصاالنا بممثل إتصاالت أي شيء.
Erwin Rivera in the Fono shop in Dubai Mall said there’s “a lot of interest” in iPhone 3GS. “Especially tourists are asking for it because it’s much cheaper here and even if iPhone is launched in their country it comes with a monthly plan, a contract. Here you can purchase with SIM card, but the handset is not locked,” Erwin said. Sony Professional introduced three new home theater projectors to the Middle East market in October. Sony VPL-BW7, retailing for around AED 4000-5000, is small and portable and is a good entry-level choice if you need to connect a computer or gaming console. Positioned in the HD home cinema segment, Sony’s VPL-HW15, retails for around AED10,000-11,000. It uses Sony’s SXRD technology, has a very high contrast ratio (60,000:1), optimized air flow to minimize fan noise, and functionality for optimizing picture quality. On the higher end, retailing for around AED 27,000, Sony VPL-VW85 is aimed squarely at the home cinema enthusiast. It offers full HD 1080p, 120,000:1 contrast ratio, Motionflow technology, Sony’s Bravia Engine 2 technology and more.

In fact, all their consumeroriented computers received a bump in specifications. Alongside the computers Apple also released a brand new remote control, replacing the white plastic model with one made out of aluminum.
MacBook Apple made some serious revisions and updates to the MacBook. Since the 13-inch MacBook Pro was born, the white, plastic MacBook has been the only remaining member of this notebook family. The new MacBook has a polycarbonate unibody design, a multitouch allglass trackpad, up to seven hours of battery life (Apple’s claim), and LEDbacklit display. Apple’s new mouse, the Magic Mouse, has a cool new shape and surface, and multi-touch capability á la Apple’s recent MacBook trackpads. The top area of the mouse is touch sensitive and responds to clicks and swipes from one or more fingers to perform various tasks. Apple says that “Magic Mouse won’t confuse a scroll with a swipe”. We’ll see how true that may be when we get our hands on a Magic Mouse.

Mac mini It’s not quite the “Mac Pro mini” that some of us were hoping for- a cross between Mac mini and Mac Pro- but the new Mac mini Server is pretty cool. Apple dropped the optical drive and added a hard drive. It now has two 500GB hard drives and no slot for discs, as there obviously is no need for one. This mini comes with Mac OS X Snow Leopard Server and is a capable server right out of the box. In hardware it has 2.53GHz Intel Core 2 Duo processor and 4GB of RAM. If you need an optical drive, like for installing Mac OS X, you can apparently use the external SuperDrive Apple sells for MacBook Air. Even the regular mini is now more powerful than ever. With NVIDIA GeForce 9400M graphics, 2.26 or 2.56GHz Intel Core 2 Duo processor, 4GB RAM, and 160 or 320GB hard drive, there should be enough power for even more advanced tasks.
iMac Apple also introduced an all new iMac lineup with two models of their popular all-in-one computer. With LED backlit 21.5 (1920×1080 pixels) and 27-inch (2560×1440 pixels) displays (16:9 aspect ratio), they should produce vivid colors and sharp graphics. GITEX 2009 concludes His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, UAE Prime Minister and Vice President, and Ruler of Dubai, inaugurated the 29th edition of GITEX Technology Week on October 18th. According to the organizers, more than 3,000 companies from 65 countries were represented at the show, which spanned 72,000 square meters. ADEs presented workshops in Abu Dhabi As a part of International Council for Educational Media’s (ICEM) annual conference at Abu Dhabi Women’s College, several Apple Distinguished Educators (ADE) presented workshops on topics including iLife and various Adobe applications. Mike Lawrence, Executive Director of ComputerUsing Educators Inc., presented Apple’s iLife ‘09 suite to a group of students at the college, among other sessions. Covering all the applications in the suite, Mike showed some of the powerful capabilities of the applications, including Faces and Places in iPhoto, video editing in iMovie, and much more. He said “The reason I’m an ADE: I find [Apple’s products] particularly useful to prepare students for the real world, more so than any other products I’ve been exposed to. Apple seems to get it. Apple seems to come at it from a different angle, valuing students’ creativity, valuing students as producers rather than just users.” Hoping that he could show students and other participants in the workshops some of what Apple has to offer, Mike added that he hopes to come back soon because the Middle East is a modern and exciting place that has a lot to offer. One of the participating students, Hoda Mohamed Al Hajeri, student in the Bachelor Information Management program said “It was very exciting experience to work with the iLife programs and develop new skills. I was also lucky to win a book all about iLife so I can learn more.” John Couch, Apple Inc.’s Vice President for Education was the keynote speaker at the ICEM conference. Previously Mac users had to depend on third-party software to make their Mac talk to their Blackberry. With the new software you can sync data between your Blackberry and iCal, Address Book, and Microsoft Entourage. In addition, you can install software updates to your handset, which is a first, and add and remove applications. And what might be the most important functionality, the new Desktop app lets you sync music, complete with album art, from iTunes to a Blackberry. BlackBerry Desktop Manager is compatible with Mac OS X 10.5.5 and higher, and BlackBerry smartphones running BlackBerry OS 4.2 and higher. I feel that sometimes we do ourselves a big disservice as Apple fans by shielding ourselves from the rest of the world. Of course we all think that Apple is a great company and that they make great products, but is it really that hard to admit that other companies also make great products too? And is it out of the question that other companies could make products that are better than what comes out of that Cupertino campus we all wish we could call home? Let's face it, Apple has made some real clunkers at times in their history, and chances are they will again. And there are engineers and designers equally brilliant to the ones at Apple at other tech companies. Since I have the good fortune to look at and try out a lot of gadgets and technology products I can see that in much of what I come across. But what typically sets an Apple product apart is how it's put together as a complete unit;
great in design, concept and creation from the outside to inside, software, interface and more. Apple doesn't just focus on an item's core functionality, instead they include every aspect of the item's intended use. Recently I wrote about a MP3 player in The National. The sound quality is as good as from an iPod, the design is pretty boring, the interface is awful, but the price is amazingly low. I guess they balance out being very poor in some aspects by being great in others. (Mainly the price.) Apple, in contrast, I think tries to get it all right in all aspects. That's probably in great part due to Steve Jobs' infamous attention to detail. But obviously even Apple has to make compromises and cut corners at times. Sometimes we don't exactly agree with them, but more often than not we're amazed at how well they manage the tricky balance.

I’m a die-hard Sony Ericsson mobile phone user, and your September 2009 review of Sony Ericsson Satio got me all excited. Your balanced view about the products presented is quite promising. In fact we're an Apple lifestyle magazine, covering all things Apple, like Mac, iPod, iPhone, etc. and everything that goes together with that. This means that a mobile phone like Sony Ericsson Satio is right in line with what we should cover. Free online I have to admit that one thing that contributed to my passion for and attachment to my Mac is being a subscriber to Shufflegazine. I can't stress enough how much I benefit from reading the magazine, and how it impacted my decision well before purchasing my Mac, since I was able to browse through past issues. I'd like to suggest that subscribers could benefit from a PDF version of the magazine as well as the printed one. Or at least have the choice of either one. - FO That's a very good idea, FO. Q: I have a MacBook and I use a Blackberry Curve 8900 on du's network. I want to use my Blackberry as a USB modem, because sometimes there is no Wi-Fi around, or it's slow. So how I can do that? Or, is there any 3G USB modem that I can buy, that will work with du network? A: As far as we know, neither Etisalat nor du allow tethering with Blackberry on their networks. Tethering is when you use a mobile phone connected to your Mac, via USB or Bluetooth, as a 3G modem to get Internet access. Both du and Etisalat sell 3G USB modems and you just need a SIM card with a 3G data plan to get online with such a modem and your Mac. Q: I have an iPhone 3G. I just want to know if it's locked or unlocked version. I want upgrade to 3.0 version, can I do that? Please do not tell me check Apple's web site. I have been trying that a lot. I would appreciate it if you can tell me yes or no. I can give you the serial number. A: You can't tell whether it's unlocked or not based on the serial number. What I'd suggest is to Google the model number of your iPhone. (Found under Settings > General > About.) That should give you a good indication on whether it's factory locked or not. Also you can check whether Cydia is installed. If Cydia is installed it's a pretty good sign, although not fool proof, that it's factory locked.
Q: I handle a lot of PDF files, and some can be quite large. They're usually business reports or presentations, and can be hundreds of megabytes in size. Most of them I pass on via email to others that I work with, so I need them to be as small as possible. How can I reduce the size of these PDF files? A: The best way to reduce the size of PDF files is to use Acrobat Professional, which has a number of functions for this, including various options for how to reduce the size. That gives you the best reduction capability, as well as control over how it happens. If you don't have Acrobat Professional, and don't want to spend money on it, you can try the Preview application that comes with Mac OS X. Open the PDF file in Preview, then go to “Save As...” in the “File” menu. Next, select “PDF” in the “Format” drop-down, and “Reduce File Size” in the “Quartz Filter” drop-down. You can then save the file; but save it as a copy, don't overwrite the original. You will probably experience varying degrees of compression with different files.
Q: How can I convert a song in iTunes to a plain MP3 file? I want to put a bunch of songs on my car's navigation system, which supports a USB flash drive, but when I've tried with the files I have, it doesn't seem to see them. A: This is pretty simple in iTunes. In the Preferences, select “General” then click on “Import Settings...”. Next to “Import Using” you can select which codec music should be imported as. In your case, select “MP3”. Then click “OK” to close the window, and again to close and save the Preferences. Then you right-click on the file you want to convert and select “Create MP3 Version”. The new copy will appear in the same playlist. Right-click on the copy and select “Show in Finder” to reveal your new file. Note that this doesn't work with any files protected by DRM (Digital Rights Management), which applies to all files bought from the iTunes store, unless they're iTunes+ files.

I carry two iPhones most of the time. Both are 3G, but one is software unlocked and has a du SIM card, and the other is factory unlocked and has an Etisalat SIM card. Obviously, I am a great fan of the iPhone, but that's not to say that I think it's perfect; far from it. It does however mean I think the iPhone, and especially the 3GS version, is better than any other mobile device available right now. One thing I really miss on iPhone, compared to some other devices, is a file system and applications that can access that file system. You know, like you have the Finder in Mac OS X with files and folders that you can create, organize, delete, work with, etc. I guess Apple feels that it's a good idea to hide that from users, and that's probably not incorrect, for the most part. But if Apple truly wants to position iPhone and iPod touch as mobile computers, I think this is something that has to be addressed. Without this functionality they will severely restrict what I can and cannot do with my iPhone, and what I can and cannot take with me using it. Personally I would love to see a 64GB or 128GB iPhone onto which I can sync my Dropbox folder (getdropbox. com). If I could also edit some files using the iPhone and save them back to this folder, that'd be amazing. Then we'd really be talking about an extension of a notebook computer, almost like a small tablet; something many users want, I believe. For me, with the current iPhone, I don't feel there's many situations I can leave my MacBook behind and only carry the iPhone. Even though there are some great apps available, I'm still dependent on the Mac, even with the recently released DropBox iPhone app. If Apple would cut this cord, at least partially, I'd still buy the MacBook, but I wouldn't have to carry it around so much. Even though a MacBook is not that heavy, I know my back would appreciate that a lot.

أعترف بأني أعمل في مجلة «آبل» وال أمتلك «آي فون» .هذا ال يعني أنني ال أرغب باقتناء جهاز من هذه األجهزة األنيقة التي يحملها من يمتلكها كشارة فخر وكبرهان على حسن الذوق وارتفاع مستوى المعرفة التكنولوجية .لكنني بصراحة ال أستطيع أن أحمل نفسي على إنفاق مبلغ كبير يصل إلى عدة آالف على هاتف .أشتهر بين أصدقائي بذاكرتي السيئة وعدم قدرتي على حمل شيئين دون إسقاط أحدهما، فما بالك بهاتف كبير الحجم نسبيًا ،ذو سطح كبير عرضة للخدوش في حقيبة يدي الضخمة المليئة باألقالم ،والمقصات والمفاتيح .ال أمتلك تلك الروح األنيقة التي تحتضن التكنولوجيا كما لو كانت امتدادًا لليد ،بل أرتبك عندما أحمل أغراضي وأصطدم بالزوايا وأنا أمشي ،وبينما أتمكن من إيجاد هاتفي في فوضى حقيبتي، يكون اليأس قد زحف إلى قلب الطرف المتصل ،وال أقع طريدة سهلة تحت ضغط أصدقائي يدفعني القتناء آخر ما تجلبه التكنولوجيا من صرعات.
لقد تجاوزت التكنولوجيا جانبها العملي بأميال ،فالهاتف الذي يجلس براحة القط في منزله ،وهو في جيبنا وبجانب سريرنا، وعلى أحضاننا ،ليس مجرد هاتف ،بل هو إكسسوار وعالمة تدل على مستوى أناقتنا وفهمنا وانتمائنا إلى هذا القرن .لقد امتألت الصحف التقنية بأخبار إطالق «آي فون» في األسواق ،وخصت المقاالت التقنية الهاتف الجديد بمئات من الكلمات ،وقام العديدون بشراء الهاتف قبل توفره في السوق حتى! أرغب بالحصول على أحدها فهي أنيقة، وسهلة االستعمال وكل من «يفهم في التكنولوجيا» و «ينتمي إلى هذا العصر» لديه واحد من هذه الهواتف «الذكية» أو آخر. لكنني ،عندما أهم بأخذ القرار ،ال أستطيع إال التفكير بأني سأكون مثل مئات اآلالف الذين يحملون نفس األجهزة «الفريدة»، و»المبتكرة» و»المبدعة» ،أي أنني سأكون فردًا من القطيع «األنيق تكنولوجيًا». ولكن دون هذا الهاتف ،فأنا أنتمي إما إلى «البسطاء» أو «األقوياء الذين ال تهمهم المظاهر» ،حسب نظرة القطيع لنفسه.
في كل األحوال ،أنا في قطيع أو آخر ،لربما إذًا علي أن أقتني أحد هذه األجهزة الرائعة التي تسمح لي بقراءة األخبار وأنا في السرير، واالستمتاع ببعض األلعاب وأنا في قاعة انتظار طبيب األسنان ألزيل التوتر المرتبط بالكرسي المائل المرعب ،ولكي أقوم باستبداله بعد شهرين عندما يتم إطالق جهاز أفضل وأكثر أناقة وأكثر مواكبة للصرعات! ينفق الناس اآلالف للحصول على آخر أشكال األناقة في محاولة إلثبات وجودهم ومواكبتهم لزمنهم ،سواء كان حقيبة أو هاتف ،وهذا يحيرني .ومعظم هؤالء ال يعرف فائدة نصف المميزات التي تفيض بها أجهزتهم وهذا يقلقني .وال يستطيع أي أحد أن يقاوم مد الصرعات القوي الذي يجرفنا إلى شاطىء جديد كل يوم ،وهذا يدهشني!

Apple appoints Apple Distinguished Educators in regions around the world. ADEs are leaders in their communities in terms of using technology in general and Apple products in particular in their daily work with teaching, research, and more. Shufflegazine had the great opportunity to sit down and talk with Brad Moody, Applied Communication Faculty at Sharjah Women's College, part of the Higher Colleges of Technology system in the UAE, about his experience. Q: Tell us about your background. A: I have a Masters of Fine Arts in Electronic Arts that has allowed me to not only teach, but has also allowed me a great deal of field experience. Most of my professional career I've spent in Advertising, Design and Broadcast, as a Designer, Art Director/Broadcaster, and Producer. After doing that for many years, about 15, I felt that it was time for a bit of career change so I decided to give teaching a try and so far I'm very happy with the career change. Q: How do you use Apple technology in your teaching? A: Apple products work seamlessly to enhance and streamline my teaching and classroom experience. I use a MacBook Pro to prepare and execute lectures and class presentations, during which I use my Apple remote to control my MacBook Pro, which gives me the freedom to move throughout the classroom and interact with students. I have used the iLife suite to introduce students to podcasting, web design and sound editing. I use Final Cut Studio in creating podcasts, motion graphics, videos and DVDs with the students. I have used Remote Desktop in the classroom to present material and
demonstrate techniques. I use iCal to schedule my courses and classes. I use iTunes and iTunes U extensively with podcasting, from staying current on media trends and software to showing podcasts in the classroom in an effort to enhance and expose students to thought leaders that they would not have available otherwise. (The iTunes store is not available in this country). iTunes U is an amazing source of information. I am working on using Podcast Capture in conjunction with Podcast Producer in Mac OS X Server to create podcasts of lectures and hope to have some available by next semester. On my new edition of the iPod touch, I am testing out applications like Cram, YouTube, Facebook and researching the many other Apps for video, photography and design that could be used in the classroom to enhance student interactivity and learning. Q: Why do you feel Apple's products fit better in education than the alternatives? A: I started out many years ago in my undergraduate work with an Acer PC 13LB laptop (1990). Soon after taking some Graphic Design courses and being introduced to Apple, I switched. I find Apple products to be intuitive, well designed and the interface just makes sense. My experience has been that students feel the same way. Apple has made a commitment to education with partnerships with schools and the ADE program and resources that go along with it. Q: How did you get appointed as an ADE? And what does it mean to be an ADE? A: I was nominated for my work with students and podcasting. Being an ADE is being a part of a community that is passionate about teaching,

and how Apple products help enhance and streamline the student and teacher experience. I use the ADE site to discuss and share ideas with other ADE’s around the world. Q: As an ADE, are you available to other teachers if they want some help and ideas with Apple technologies? A: Yes, I am always available to anyone to share my experience and brainstorm new ideas. Q: Do you think being an ADE has helped you with your career? A: Definitely. It has given me the opportunity to access other ADEs globally, offered training in Apple software and free software. As a result, being an ADE has also empowered me to share these experiences with my classroom and colleges. Q: What suggestions do you have for Apple/ABM to make ADE's better known? A: Keep up the ADE program here in the UAE; it’s a great program. Globally, the ADE community is phenomenal, however here in the UAE, we could benefit from more of a community feel and involvement with each of the ADEs. Knowing what others in the UAE are working on, ideas they have, information that can be shared, etc., would benefit us all.

حوار مع «براد مودي» ،معلم «آبل» المميز تقوم «آبل» بتعيين معلمي «آبل» المميزين في مناطق العالم المختلفة ،وهؤالء عادة هم رواد في مجتمتعاتهم من ناحية المعرفة التكنولوجية بشكل عام ،وبمنتجات «آبل» بشكل خاص ،وذلك في عملهم اليومي في التدريس ،والبحث وغيرها. وسنحت الفرصة مؤخرًا لشفل جازين التحاور مع «براد مودي» ،أستاذ من كلية االتصاالت التطبيقيقة في الكلية التقنية العليا للبنات في الشارقة.
أخبرنا قلي ً ال عن نفسك. سمحت لي شهادة الماجستير في الفنون الجميلة -الفنون االلكترونية العمل في مجال التدريس وأتاحت لي الحصول على خبرة ميديانية أيضًا .لقد أمضيت معظم حياتي المهنية في عالم اإلعالنات ،والتصميم ،واإلذاعة وذلك كمدير فني ومذيع وكمنتج .بعد ١٥عامًا من ذلك ،شعرت أنني بحاجة لتغيير جذري ،لهذا قررت تجرية التدريس ،وأنا سعيد بذلك جدًا.
كيف تستخدم تكنولوجيا «آبل» في تدريسك؟ إن منتجات «آبل» تعمل بشكل سلس وتلقائي لتساعد على تحسين تجرية التدريس لي ولطلبتي. أستخدم «ماك بوك برو» لتحضير المحاضرات والدروس والعروض التقديمية الصفية ،وأستعمل جهاز التحكم عن بعد من «آبل» للتحكم بالشرائح أثناء المحاضرات .استخدمت باقة «آي اليف »iLife لتعريف الطلبة إلى البودكاستينغ وتصميم الويب، ومونتاج الصوتيات .أستخدم عادة «فاينل َكت ستوديو »Final Cut Studioإلنشاء البودكاستينغ، الرسومات المتحركة ،الفيديو والدي في دي DVD مع الطلبة .كذلك استخدمت «ريموت ديسكتوب» في الصف لتقديم بعض المواد والتقنيات. أستخدم «آي كال» لتنظيم وتخطيط المحاضرات. وأستحذم «آي تيونز» « ،آي تيونز يو « بشكل مكثف للبودكاستينغ ،وذلك لكي أكون دائمًا على علم بكل ما من برامج ،ولكي أحاول أن أعرض الطلبة إلى كل المفكرين والمبدعين في هذا المجال ،وحاصة بسبب عدم توفر محل «آي تيونز» في الlنطقة.

What happened in Vegas

A good indicator of the variety of my travels is the fact that on one particular day, I found myself at McCarran Airport in Las Vegas with a layover of over six hours. Six hours in Vegas! Most people might go to a casino or a show, but those don't really attract me. And besides, I'm an Apple fan, and there are three Apple stores in Las Vegas. Could I visit them all, and be back in time to wade through a long airport security line? It was a question that had to be answered. A shuttle took me to my first stop, The Fashion Show Mall. The gleaming entrance had giant video screens with advertisements running on them. Happily, one of the ads was a commercial for the iPod touch. Trooping through the mall in anticipation, I wondered what interesting things might be in store for me at an Apple store in Las Vegas. In that city of neon, a little flash is in order, don't you think?

Approaching the store however, it seemed they had taken a more camouflaged approach. It looked like a standard Apple store. Perhaps just a ploy to lend more surprise to the delights inside? No, the inside also looked like a typical Apple store. No Elvis impersonators helping customers, no Macs spinning on a roulette wheel styled table, no showgirls manning the Genius Bar. Just Concierges, Specialists, Geniuses, the latest Apple products and plenty of customers. I had hoped for something with a bit more "local flavor", but I certainly wasn't unhappy to be in an actual Apple Store after so long away. After admiring the latest MacBook Pro a bit, I decided I had better continue my journey down The Strip. The sights along the way reminded me of why I had expected something a bit flashier at the Apple Store: neon signs, flashy video billboards and animatronic spectacles everywhere. In Vegas, even McDonald's looks like a casino. So, my hopes were again set for the Apple Store in The Shops at the Forum, a mall connected to
Caesar's Palace. It's an indoor mall, but designed to resemble an ancient city; think Ibn Battuta Mall, but all Roman themed, with statues, columns and blue sky painted ceiling. Finally, there it was, another standard Apple storefront. And inside, not a single Concierge or Genius in a toga. It was almost exactly like the previous store, although a little bigger. Again, despite it's rather imaginative surroundings, it could have been an Apple Store anywhere. Onward. I hopped on the doubledecker bus that trolls The Strip, called "The Deuce", and eventually I arrived at my final stop, Town Square, an open air mall. There I found another standard Apple Store facade with a standard Apple store layout inside. In fact, the store appeared to be the exact same dimensions as the previous Apple Store, and entirely identical inside. And I also realized that all three stores had the exactly same displays in their front windows. But, it was after all an Apple Store, so in I went, once again, to drool over the wonderful goodies during the last few minutes that I had to spare.
Then, to a nearby taxi and back to the airport, where I had time to reflect on my excursion. I had sought out Las Vegas' Apple Stores expecting them to reflect some of the glitz around them. It seemed a bit ironic then, to find them instead treated with more of a cookie-cutter approach. Maybe it should not have been so surprising to me; after all, even though there are a few famously flash Apple stores in places like London, New York and San Francisco, the majority of the stars in Apple's retail crown are more simple and practical. And that I suppose is the real lesson; one I should have known already. Although there has been some degree of glamor attached to the Apple image, it's not really flash or fancy design that make Apple products so popular, it is that they are practical. That's certainly why I have always loved them. Sure they- usually- look cool and seem spectacular compared to other devices, but they allow me the get things done, simply and reliably. And if it weren't for that it wouldn't matter how flashy they might be.

ولكن ،عندما وصلت إلى المحل ،لم يكن مختلفًا عن محالت «آبل» األخرى .لم يكن هناك أي من الموظفين في زي «إيلفيس»، ولم أر أيًا من حواسب «ماك» ،وهي تدور على طاوالت الروليت ،ولم أر أي فتيات من فتيات العرض التي تشتهر بها فيغاس .لم أر سوى طاقم الموظفين العاديين في محالت «آبل» ،والعديد من منتجات «آبل» وعدد أكبر من الزبائن .لقد أملت بشيء مختلف ،أكثر مناسبة لفيغاس ،ولكن ذلك بالطبع ال يعنى أنني لم أكن سعيدًا بوجودي في محل «آبل» وذلك بعد فترة انقطاع طويلة .وبعد أن تأملت «ماك بوك برو» الحديث طوي ً ال، قررت متابعة رحلتي عبر الشارع الرئيسي في فيغاس .The Strip ذكرتني اللوحات اإلعالنية التي أحاطت بالشارع بسبب توقعي رؤية شيء أكثر إثارة في محالت «آبل» ،فقد امتدت لوحات النيون ،ولوحات الفيديو اإلعالنية على جانبي الشارع ،وحتى «ماكدونالدز» بدى وكأنه أحد الكازينوهات. وجهتى هذه المرة كانت محل «آبل» في «ذي شوبس »The Shopsفي «فورم ،»Forum وهو مركز تسوق متصل بفندق «سيزر باالس». صمم مركز التسوق هذا ليبدو كمدينة أثرية ،تخيل مركز إبن بطوطة بجناح روما القديمة بسمائها الزرقاء وأعمدتها الكبيرة وتماثيلها العديدة وستعرف ما أتحدث عنه. أخيرًا ،وصلت إلى محل «آبل» ،ألرى مح ً ال عاديًا ال يختلف عما سبقه .ومرة أخرى وبالرغم من كل ما دار حوله ،لم يحمل هذا المحل أيًا

Samsung ST1000: a social networking camera by Mita Srinivasan
Ever since I saw the Samsung ST1000 for the first time, I wanted to get my hands on it and to play with it. I’ve only had it a couple of days and already It’s clear to me that this is a camera for the social networker. They say some of the best things in life come in small packages, and in this case it’s true. The Samsung ST1000 is around the size of a smartphone- slightly smaller than my Nokia E61i- so it could quite neatly fit into handbags and trouser pockets. It has all the typical bells and whistles of a normal digital camera, with a few additions that set it apart, which are crucial, in my opinion. As a digital camera, it offers 8 resolution settings from 1 megapixel all the way to 12.2 megapixels. It has a 5x optical zoom and the usual functionalities, like red eye
reduction. In addition it has two quirky ones: smile and blink detection. It has a very nice touch screen; in fact, it’s very similar to the one on iPhone. I must admit I have this fear of touch screens, because I think that I’ll set it off without realizing it. Not so much with the ST1000 though, which is good. Wi-Fi is clearly my favorite feature of the camera. As a social networking addict, I find the little interactive tools of the ST1000 are amazing. With a convenient on-screen QWERTY keyboard, I was able to set up a link with my home network, and after that the world was my oyster. I could post the photos I took directly to Picasa, Facebook and YouTube, or simply select my own website to post them on. Emailing photographs or using Bluetooth to share them with
other devices are also really easy. In closing, this is a cool camera for social networking and it’s going on my shopping list. Now what is the full address for Twitpic?

The SnowBall from Blue Microphones is certainly not new. In fact, it’s been out for quite a number of years now, but it’s still one of the best USB microphones available on the market. It’s not cheap, but it does produce some of the best audio I’ve experienced from a USB microphone, so the price is not that much of an issue. The actual microphone is a big, white globe with some chrome on it, and it’s probably bigger and heavier than you’d expect. There’s not much to using the SnowBall: you just connect a USB cable to it and your Mac. Garageband works very well with the SnowBall; you just have to set the SnowBall as the input microphone in Garageband’s settings. On the back of the SnowBall there is a switch with which you can decide how the microphone will pick up the sound: from one direction or all around. If it’s just you recording it probably works better to set it to capture just one direction. On the other hand, if you want to record a band playing or a group of people talking, set it to record from all around. The one small complaint I have is the flimsy tripod that the SnowBall comes with. It’s barely enough to keep the SnowBall steady on a flat surface, and if you put it on a regular desk or table it doesn’t reach high enough for it to be in a comfortable position for speech recording. Sitting in a chair next to the table you will have to lean down to speak directly into the SnowBall. The conclusion is that you will have to provide your own setup for holding the microphone, which is fairly easy as it supports a standard screw mount. You could buy inexpensive studio tripods and arms to put it in a good position. If you don’t want to go with a regular microphone, a USB one is a good choice. It’s easier to plug in, and your software is likely to recognize it right away. In terms of USB microphones and audio quality the SnowBall is about as good as it gets, but you have to be comfortable with the size of it.

Promate iRock speakers

Promate's iRock is a very clever invention. It's basically two small speakers that can be mounted together for easy transport and storage. They can be used with any device with a standard 3.5mm audio jack, including Macs, iPods, and iPhones. Each speaker has a cord: one of them has the 3.5mm audio connector and the other has a mini-USB port to connect the two speakers together. The speakers also charge through the USB port. You can “pop” the top off, which extends the speakers a bit and that gives you a bit more bass. These are very cool speakers, and the sound is surprisingly good. Promate's iRock will not replace your regular Hi-Fi equipment, but they are a great alternative for music on the go.

In short, it's bigger, has more ports, larger hard drive, and supports more media file formats. If you want to a place to store your media files, it has a 500GB 3.5-inch hard drive that you can easily swap or upgrade yourself. The EVA9150 can play back media stored on the hard drive or media living elsewhere, like on other hard drives on the network or even online. It supports wired Ethernet as well as 802.11n dual band (2.8GHz and 5GHz). There is a wide range of ports for video, including composite, S-Video, component, HDMI, and Scart, and it's well equipped for
audio as well. To set things up you connect the appropriate cables and put the included CD in your Mac to install the Digital Entertainer software for Mac. This software will let you configure the EVA9150, monitor its status, copy files to it, and even remotely control it from your Mac. Configuration was easy, as was sharing a folder from the Mac containing video files for the EVA9150 to play. The interface is user friendly, and although the accompanying remote has a myriad of buttons, it's pretty easy to figure out. Video plays in nice quality. Even non-HD video upscales nicely on a 1080 TV set. With its wide support for media
formats, large hard drive, and support for both wired and wireless networking, the EVA9150 is a good choice for someone looking for a way to enjoy your media on your TV without connecting it to a computer. The interface is not as slick as AppleTV nor is it as integrated with iTunes, but it does offer more options in media formats and functionality. Really, only price makes me not put full marks on this product.

It doesn’t happen very often, but once in a while you try a game that is so different, it makes you go “wow”. I’m not talking about great graphics or sound, I’m talking about the actual game play; what you do in the game. Personally, I can’t remember that many games that have done that, but Tetris and Lemmings come to mind. And now there is “World of Goo”. Borrowing a little bit from Lemmings, I suspect, Goo is a very special game with a unique game play. On the Goo web site it is described like this: “World of Goo is a physics based puzzle/construction game. The millions of Goo Balls who live in the beautiful World of Goo don’t know that they are in a game,

or that they are extremely delicious.” Basically the idea is that you help the Goo Balls through different missions. It might be building a tower, constructing a bridge, or any number of other situations. And you design structures based on the Goo Balls themselves, positioning them, trying to balance the structure so you reach the goal without tipping over. Does that make any sense to you? I didn’t really think so. So, go to their site and download the demo. I think you’ll be surprised, amazed, and entertained. And it’s only AED73, if you want to keep playing it. Fujitsu ScanSnap S1500M by Magnus | magnus@shufflegazine.com It’s not cheap, but if you need to scan a lot of unbound documents, Fujitsu’s ScanSnap S1500M is a great choice for a small office setting. In functionality, it’s pretty simple: you put papers in the top slot and press the blue scan button. The ScanSnap will scan the documents and they’re sent to a connected Mac. You can decide the level of quality and resolution you want, up to 600DPI for color and 1200DPI for black and white scans. In terms of size, it handles up to A4 and down to business card size. The scanned files can be saved onto the Mac as JPG or PDF, and you have options for what should happen to them, like emailing them, converting to Word or Excel files, or sending into iPhoto. Where it counts,
in scanning speed and quality, the SnapScan really shines. We tried a 45 A4 pages of typical black and white business documents on “recommended settings”, which took just 1min 9sec to complete. That’s impressive. Quality is also great, at least with text, which is clear and very readable. It seems it’s optimized for text, because photos didn’t come through that great, but photos is not what this scanner was built for. It would be nice if it could be plugged into Ethernet or even connect to WiFi; that would make it more flexible. But, as it is now it has to be plugged in with a USB cable to a Mac. The way the ScanSnap is constructed, it can only scan loose sheets of paper, not magazines, reports etc., that are somehow bound together.
If that’s what you scan most, get a flatbed scanner. Speaking of construction, I’m a bit concerned that the document feeder and the output tray are too flimsily designed. Only a longer term usage in a busy office environment would prove whether that’s true or not. In my mind, the best use of the ScanSnap is to connect it to a Mac and set it to save all the scans to a shared folder. That way someone can just insert a paper, press the scan button, and once finished, the files will be available through the shared folder. In such scenarios the ScanSnap is a great choice.

External hard drives come in many models from many manufacturers, and for all of us it’s hard to tell which one we should buy. For example, hard drive quality is often revealed only after extensive use. We have looked at two very similar drives and put them head to head in terms of performance. The drives were tested on a Mac Pro with a 320GB 7200RPM internal Seagate boot drive. In the test, we copied one folder containing 761 items totaling 5.73GB from and to each hard drive. It took 5min 21sec to copy the data from 320GB HP drive, and 5min 52sec to copy the data to it. The corresponding figures for the 250GB Buffalo were 5min 6sec (from) and 6min 49sec (to). You can see that in terms of speed and specifications there’s little that separates these two drives, so speed is not really a variable in selecting between them. Obviously the HP has larger storage capacity, but my choice would still be the Buffalo because of the smart cable solution. It has a built-in USB cable that cleverly wraps around the drive and the USB connector slides into a holder in the side of the enclosure.

The cable is a bit hefty compared to other headphones, but it is removable and comes with two audio jacks; one for mixers and amplifiers, and one for iPod, iPhone and Mac. It also has a clever lock feature that prevents the accidental unplugging of the cable from the headset. The SRH440 performed great across all music genres. As I cranked up the volume, I was able to hear the different layers of music very well, especially the bass. I tried them out with and without iTunes equalizer settings for the various genres, and for the most part I didn’t need the equalizer on; the headphones were awesome on their own. I couldn’t handle them when pumped up to maximum volume though; they were too powerful for me. After about 45 minutes of loud music, I was ready to give my ears a rest. Sound cancellation was pretty good as well, both in and out, so you can’t hear or disturb your surroundings. All in all, these are fantastic headphones. If you are looking for a little higher quality in sound, you can go for the SRH840, or if you’re on a budget then I’d suggest the SRH240. But the SRH440 are great performing headphones and will give you you’re money’s worth. It’s like having a concert in your ears.

Let’s face it, Apple has been very good at hiding from iPhone users the fact that it is indeed a computer inside that small package. Most things you can do on your Mac, you can also, to some degree, do with your iPhone. On the iPhone, much of the power and capability is hidden behind a seductively simple touchscreen interface. You just touch the screen gently, no need to press, and something happens. In this article we take a look at what devices an iPhone 3GS can replace and what functionality you can expect. Digital still camera Digital still cameras have better lenses, more functionality and perhaps four or five times the number of megapixels in iPhone 3GS. That’s a fact. But still iPhone, all models, remain one of the most popular digital cameras today. The reason is simple: you always have it with you. Even the 3 megapixels in 3GS pales in comparison to most digital cameras, but the iPhone manages to produce some really good photos with very little. That Apple added autofocus in the 3GS probably means better photo quality than just adding one more megapixel. Sure there is no zoom, no manual exposure control, no ISO setting, etc., but for what it is the iPhone 3GS produces very nice photos, and since you always have it with you, you will take more photos. Personally, I’d rather have one not so good photo than a high-quality photo that I never took. You should also look at the Photography section of the App Store. There you will find many apps that can help you take better photos, as well as edit them.

Digital video camera The first two generations of iPhone could not record video unless you jailbroke the device and installed one of a number of video recording apps available in Cydia and Installer. With iPhone 3GS you don’t have to do that anymore as video recording is right there in the Camera app. Recording quality is limited to 640x480, but it supports up to 30fps so most of the time video looks surprisingly fluid and crisp. I’m sure most of us would love to record in HD, at least 720p, but I think you’ll be pleasantly surprised with the video from the 3GS. Once you’ve recorded something you can do a quick edit. It’s not iMovie, but the interface is similar, and you can at least cut off pieces you don’t want. So once the editing is finished, you can with a tap or two send your video to YouTube and be an instant movie star, at least in your own world.

GPS navigation I believe we all think that the iPhone’s Google Maps app is a great tool, but it has not supported turn-by-turn navigation, like dedicated GPS units, until now. First out the door with a turn-by-turn navigation instruction solution for iPhone was TomTom, but unfortunately they don’t have any maps for the Middle East. NDrive offers an iPhone application (www.ndriveweb.com/iphone) and they have maps for UAE and Saudi Arabia. When trying it around Dubai it works pretty well, and the maps are more up to date than the Google Maps we’re used to. However, the interface is not exactly iPhone-ish so they could certainly work some more on that. At $99.99 it’s also not cheap, but if it replaces a stand-alone GPS unit it might just be worth it. Be aware though, that using your iPhone as a GPS navigation device very likely means you’ll run your battery down fast. Keep the iPhone plugged in and put it in a holder attached to your dashboard or windscreen. NDrive has English or Arabic maps, interface and search.

Throw out your TV set at your own peril, but you can safely substitute some couchtime with iPhone. The screen is small, but you can actually, in relative comfort, watch even feature-length movies on it; I know because I have. Obviously, there’s the built-in YouTube app, which features thousands of videos of the wide range we’ve come to expect and love from Google’s video site. Ustream has many more videos, mostly ones that users themselves have created. It can be hard to find something useful and interesting, but it is there, I promise. Joost works only over Wi-Fi, but offers quite a range of video. In terms of actually replacing regular TV, Joost is probably the iPhone alternative that comes closest. I just watched a collection of classic Charlie Chaplin clips, as one example.

Gaming console No, I’m not really suggesting that iPhone 3GS can replace XBox or Sony Playstation 3. A more likely equivalent would be Sony PSP or Nintendo DS. With the increased speed, memory and graphics the iPhone 3GS is a better gaming device compared to the 3G predecessor. At a recent event Apple stated that there are many more games for iPhone compared to the competing mobile gaming platforms. I started by asking him what it feels like to finally have arrived on the day of launching iPhone after it’s been rumored for so very long. “Of course we’re very delighted that we’re launching the iPhone 3GS and iPhone 3G, and we look forward to a long, mature and beneficial association with Apple,” Faraidooni said. He then talked about du’s iPhone plans and how du has developed them to suit UAE customers. He said, “As a part of the iPhone launch, we developed several innovative data and voice packages for our iPhone customers, with a range of features that meet the needs of a diverse consumer base... and we are confident that these offerings will

Finally, I talked to Faraidooni about du’s infrastructure, and the investments they are making to make sure du is available to more customers around the UAE. This is on the back of some customers hesitating to buy iPhone from du because of limited coverage in the areas where they live, travel and work. Faraidooni reassured customers that du will continue to invest in infrastructure, saying, “In 2008 we invested over 2 billion Dirhams in infrastructure, and for 2009 we’re investing a similar amount. We already invested half a billion up to end of June this year, and we’re continuing our capital investment program until the end of the year; so we’ll be investing ”a similar amount this year again. Speaking about how this will benefit du’s customers, he said, “We are currently covering 97% of the UAE population. We have a target to reach to 99% by the end of this year, and this program is well under ”way. At the very end of my interview with him, Faraidooni revealed that du will give free access to du Wi-Fi hotspots for their iPhone customers. He said du’s “Wi-Fi networks will be available to our iPhone users free of charge except on Dubai Metro, which is a special partnership with the RTA. But everywhere where we have Wi-Fi coverage in malls and coffee shops and all that, our iPhone users will be ”able to enjoy it free of charge.

For the technology you can find inside them, the MacBook Pros are surprisingly compact. The smallest MacBook Pro, the 13-inch model, sports the same long battery life as its two siblings. The introductory desktop Mac model, petite as it is, still packs quite a punch. It comes with a Core 2 Duo processor of up to 2.66GHz, which is plenty for most of what you’d want to do. And with up to 4GB RAM, 500GB hard drive, and SuperDrive as standard, the mini is well prepared for many tasks. It’s limitation lies in that it’s hard to upgrade. Your only option is pretty much to connect things externally via USB or FireWire. There’s even a Mac mini especially meant to be used as a server. It has two 500GB hard drives instead of a SuperDrive to increase storage space.

With the app running on an iPhone on the same Wi-Fi network as your Mac, which is in turn connected via USB cable to your camera, you'll see what you're shooting on the iPhone screen, can make exposure adjustments, and even fire off the camera.

Chances are you got an error message saying it is not a movie file. Ironically, the same file plays fine in other players like VLC or Adobe Media Player. The reason for such an error is that by default QuickTime Player does not support file types such as FLV or AVI, and needs additional components to play them. You can play these videos inside QuickTime if you install Perian (www.perian.org), a free open source QuickTime Component. Perian incorporates several popular codecs for playback of FLV, AVI, MKV, DIVX, etc.
To install Perian follow these steps:

By configuring multiple hard drives in various types of RAID (Redundant Array of Independent Disks) you can achieve faster disk access, larger volumes for storage or improved reliability. There are many levels of RAID, but for most users level 0 and 1 are all you need to know about. In simple terms, RAID 0, also called “striped”, writes data in parts to separate physical drives, thereby improving the write speed. It doesn’t improve reliability however because if one disk in the RAID set fails then the whole RAID fails. RAID 1, also called “mirrored”, writes the same data at the same time to multiple drives. By doing that it basically keeps duplicate copies of the same drive, increasing reliability. Mac OS X’s Disk Utility supports RAID 0 and 1 as well as something called concatenated disks, meaning you could, for example, logically combine two 150GB disks so they appear as one 300GB disk in the Finder. In that case as well, if one drive fails the whole RAID set fails. In our RAID examples, we used a Mac Pro with four Western Digital Raptor 150GB 10,000RPM hard drives. We start out by booting the Mac Pro from the Mac OS X Installation DVD and starting Disk Utility.
