As I’m taking over this column from Omran, who has written it for the past year or so, I look forward to the future of Shufflegazine. Omran has decided to step down from much of the daily involvement in the magazine, but will of course continue to advise and guide as as we take on new challenges. One of the more immediate challenges is GITEX next month, where Shufflegazine is a supporting media partner. As a part of our GITEX coverage you will find already in this issue some companies and products that you will see on display at GITEX next month. Our participation in GITEX is just one of the exciting developments with Shufflegazine that we’ve been able to bring you lately. We’ve also told you about distribution all around the GCC, selling in Sharaf DG, Virgin Megastores, and iStyle, gadget articles in The National and much more. This is all the result of a lot of hard work and dedication from the small team that brings you Shufflegazine every month. You may see my name next to a lot of articles but you should know that creating this magazine is a big effort, and I owe a lot to those who work diligently on it. We may not have all the pieces quite in place yet. How to integrate Arabic and English is one thing we’re constantly working on, and already in this issue I hope you can see some changes and improvements in that area. Personally I hope you will continue with us on our journey to spread more information, news, and knowledge about Apple and their products to the Middle East. It’s something we are passionate about and take very seriously. As our Twitter welcome message says, “Let’s spread some Apple love :-)”

Apple reports record-breaking financial results Apple recorded record-breaking financial results for their third quarter; a revenue of $8.34bn resulted in a net quarterly profit of $1.23bn. The gross margin was slightly up, 36.3 percent compared to 34.8 percent the same quarter the previous year. During the quarter Apple sold 2.6mn Macintosh computers, a four percent increase from the same period the previous year, 10.2mn iPods, as well as 5.2mn iPhones. The iPhone sales represents a 626 percent increase, an astonishing number for any company. Even though no particular figures were
reported for the Middle East by Apple Inc. or ABM, Arab Business Machines, it was announced that 44 percent of Appe’s quarterly revenue were accounted for by international sales. The two really interesting parts of this are that Mac sales are increasing, much in contrast to many pundit’s forecasts, and iPhone is making a killing, especially, it seems, the iPhone 3GS. Although Apple did not separate the iPhone sales figures for the different models, it seems fairly safe to say that the 3GS is doing very well. The other thing is that the iPod, at least as we’ve come to know it, is slowly disappearing. It seems more certain than ever that the iPod will more or less become only the “iPod” icon on the screen of the iPhone. If the rumor is true that Apple will put a camera in the iPod touch and nano it’ll probably survive, and I think it makes sense for Apple to keep the touch anyway as many people are not interested in the phone aspect of iPhone. But the iconic iPod classic is arguably on its way out, the next quarterly statement could possibly be the last it’s included in.

«آبل» تحقق أرباحًا قياسية أعلنت «آبل» عن تحقيقها ألرباح قياسية في الربع الثالث من عائد وصل إلى ٨,٣٤مليار دوالر أمريكي ،وصافي عامها المالي ،مع ٍ أرباح وصل إلى ١,٢٣مليار دوالر أمريكي .وارتفع الهامش اإلجمالي ً مقارنة بهامشها اإلجمالي في العام بشكل طفيف إلى ،٪٣٦,٣ الماضي الذي بلغ .٪٣٤ وتمكنت «آبل» خالل هذا الربع من بيع ٢,٦مليون حاسب «ماك» لتزداد نسبة البيع بمعدل ٪٤مقارنة بنفس الفترة في العام الماضي ،وذلك باإلضافة إلى بيعها لـ ١٠,٢مليون جهاز «آي بود »iPodو ٥,٢مليون جهاز «آي فون ،»iPhoneبحيث حققت مبيعات أجهزة «آي فون» زيادة بنسبة ٪ ٦٢٦عن العام الماضي .وبالرغم من عدم توفر أية أرقام أو إحصائيات عن المبيعات في الشرق األوسط ،سواء من «آبل» أو من «الشركة العربية لتجهيزات المكاتب ( ،»Arabian Business Machines (ABMأشار التقرير بأن «آبل» تدين بنسبة ٪٤٤من أرباحها إلى مبيعاتها الدولية.
«ويسترن ديجيتال» تكشف الستار عن أول قرص صلب للحواسب المحمولة بسعة ١تيرا بايت أطلقت «ويسترن ديجيتال »Western Digitalأول قرص صلب مصمم للحوامل المحمولة بسعات تصل إلى ٧٥٠غيغا بايت و١ تيرا بايت في العالم .وصل سعر هذ القرص الذي أطلق عليه اسم «سكوربيو بلو »Scorpio Blueإلى ٢٤٩,٩٩دوالرًا وذلك في سوق الواليات المتحدة .ولم يتم اإلعالن عن توفره أو عن سعره في أسواق الشرق األوسط .بسرعته التي تصل إلى ٥٢٠٠دورة في الدقيقة ،قد ال يكون «سكوربيو بلو» أسرع قرص صلب ،ولكنه بالتأكيد يوفر المساحة األكبر. يتجاوز ٌّ كل من القرص ذو سعة ٧٥٠غيغا بايت واآلخر ذو سعة ١تيرا بايت ،اإلصدار السابق في االرتفاع .وبارتفاعهما البالغ ١٢,٥ مم ،تقر «ويسترن ديجيتال» بأن هذين القرصين لن يتوافقا مع جميع الحواسب المحمولة الموجودة في السوق .وأعلنت الكثير من المواقع اإللكترونية عن عدم توافق هذين القرصين مع حواسب «ماك» المحمولة بسبب ارتفاعهما .ولكن يشير عدد من الشائعات بأن «سيغيت »Seagateستقوم بإطالق قرص صلب بسعة ١تيرا بايت يتوافق مع حواسب «آبل» المحمولة وذلك خالل شهور قليلة.

Western Digital launches world’s first 1TB notebook drive Western Digital has introduced the world’s first 750GB and 1TB notebook drives. The 1TB WD Scorpio Blue has a US retail price of $249.99. Middle East price is not known at this time, nor is availability in our market. Spinning at 5200 RPM it’s not the fastest drive available, but you shouldn’t be running out of space anytime soon. Both the 750GB and the 1TB drives are slightly thicker than the other Scorpio Blue drives. At 12.5 mm high, WD says they “may not be compatible with all notebook systems”. Many web sites are reporting that these new drives do not work in Apple’s notebooks because they’re too thick. There are rumors that Seagate will introduce a 1TB notebook drive that will fit inside Apple’s notebooks within a few months.

Fibre coming soon to a home near you األلياف البصرية تصل إلى منازل المنطقة An IDC report published in December 2008 notes that broadband internet has really caught on big time in the Gulf region, experiencing doubledigit growth in the number of connections from 2005 through 2007. According to the IDC report, Qatar, the UAE, and Bahrain each have consumer broadband penetration rates of 36%, 32%, and 46%, respectively, while Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, and Oman have consumer penetration rates of 10%, 6%, and 2%, respectively. Part of the reason for this uptake is that most of us have moved from dial-up to DSL in the quest for increasingly faster Internet connections in our homes. Now the next speed increase is coming in the form of Fibre To The Home, or FTTH. FTTH is being implemented across the Middle East by telecommunications companies, and might be available to you soon. Fibre connections promise to bring higher speeds and increased reliability in the connections offered. In the UAE,
both Etisalat and du are hard at work bringing fibre to our homes. Etisalat announced in April of this year that they had completed 70% of the network on Abu Dhabi island, and that the rest would be finished “within a few months”. Elsewhere in the GCC, QTel in Qatar recently announced they’ve completed a trial phase for FTTH, which will deliver the fastest Internet speeds seen in the country. By end of 2009, according to QTel, it will start being available with customers at speeds of up to 50Mbps.

Apple quietly upgraded Time Capsule

Apple quietly bumped the capacity on their Time Capsule models to 1TB and 2TB, up from 512GB and 1TB respectively. No new functionality or design changes were introduced. You can read our review of Time Capsule in the August 2009 issue.

Nike’s LunarGlide+ iPhone compatible Nike introduced their LunarGlide+ running shoe in the Middle East. The shoes features what Nike calls Dynamic Support, a new type of mid-sole support that adapts to a runner with each step. According to Nike, the new technology means that runners will not be forced to chose between stability and cushioning, now they can have both. Being iPod ready running shoes, the LunarGlide+ shoes can take the Nike+ sensor, which in turn connects to iPod nano with a receiver, or to iPod touch or iPhone 3GS which have built-in receivers. The Nike LunarGlide+ sells in the UAE at a retail price of AED595.

«سامسونغ» تطلق «آي ٨٩١٠إتش دي» في أسواق الشرق األوسط
Samsung introduces I8910HD capable of HD video recording
Samsung has introduced their I8910HD to the Middle East market. With a larger display than iPhone- 3.7-inch AMOLED with 640×360 pixels- it should be a good multimedia device. It has an eight megapixel camera with LED flash, geo-tagging, face detection, Smile Shot, Blink Shot and panorama mode, as well as built-in stereo speakers, 5.1 channel surround sound, Wi-Fi, 7.2Mbps 3G data and much more, including the ability to record video up to 720p. (1280×720 at 24fps) It is not Maccompatible out of the box, but with a third-party plug-in it supports iSync for Address Book and iCal synchronization. Apple introduced an upgrade to their Final Cut Studio suite of video applications with more than 100 new features. The suite includes new versions of Final Cut Pro, Motion, Soundtrack Pro, Color and Compressor. Final Cut Pro 7 has new versions of Apple’s ProRes codecs, and new functionality for working together with other users by using iChat Theater. Motion 4 mainly enhances 3D features with improved composition and flexibility options. Soundtrack Pro 3 introduces Voice Level match and Advanced Time Stretch features, making it an even more powerful sound-editing application. Color and Compressor round off the new video editing suite from Apple. At the same time, Apple also introduced Final Cut Server 1.5, the asset management and automation tool for Final Cut Studio. The next version of Logic Studio, Apple’s suite for professional musicians, with more than 200 new features, is also now available. Logic Pro 9 now comes with Amp Designer and Pedalboard plug-ins, which should be of great interest to guitar players everywhere. A new collection of tools called Flex Time is introduced, as well as a new version of MainStage. Logic Studio also comes with Soundtrack Pro and Compress, same as Final Cut Studio.

BREAKING NEWS! Snow Leopard is here The online Apple store was down for a brief period on August 24 and speculations were intense about what Apple would be announcing. As it turns out they confirmed that Mac OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard would go on sale in the US on Friday, August 28th. That’s ahead of the September release Apple announced at this year’s WWDC. In a tweet on August 24, iStyle (www.istyle.ae) said that their copies of Snow Leopard are already on their way and should be available on Saturday August 29 for AED139 (upgrade). When boxes of Snow Leopard are starting to sell in the UAE, Shufflegazine will be there with live coverage. is the support for Microsoft Exchange server 2007 for synchronization of Exchange mail, calendar and contact data. Snow Leopard was also put on a veritable diet plan and if you upgrade from Leopard you should get back about 7GB of disk space, according to Apple. Snow Leopard is a major update of the operating system for Apple’s Mac computers but it may be one that most end users won’t notice that much of. Apple is portraying it as mainly as a stability and performance upgrade and users will experience a more stable and efficient operating system rather than lots of new noticeable features. Not long ago, I had a discussion with representatives of a major electronics retailer in the UAE about their plans to expand their offering of Apple products. It doesn't matter what company it was, but I can tell you it was an interesting discussion in that they had no clue about Apple, Apple culture, Apple fans, etc. All the things that most of you have come to take for granted, they don't know about. To them, selling Apple products is just like selling anything else, it's all about moving boxes. And I'm not saying that it's a unique approach in the Middle East, rather it's the norm. But it's
not the Apple world I live in, and I tried to tell them that. To me, selling Macs, iPods, iPhones etc. should be approached differently from selling a Dell PC or a Nokia mobile phone in all aspects, ranging from staff, store design, service level, and more. Since we pay a premium for our beloved Apple products, at least if you look at sticker price, we expect more and that's just one reason. Then there is the intense history and culture of Apple, and much more. My frame of reference is Apple Inc's stores in the US, which are such a nice experience
on every level. These guys wanting to expand their Apple offerings in Dubai should pay a visit to an Apple store and they might get some of what I told them. Unfortunately, I've made the same point to ABM (Arab Business Machines, Apple's exclusive distributor in the Middle East), Etisalat, and other companies and I've seen little sign of them thinking like I do. Perhaps that's it, we should just agree to disagree, but in the Apple world I live in, they would be so much more successful if they only listened to me a bit more. But what do I know?

I just moved to Kuwait from the USA and I brought my AppleTV with me. I've been looking in stores here and AppleTV is hardly anywhere. Why is that? It's such a wonderful device and I'm sure if it was available more people would buy it. -JS We agree, JS. AppleTV is a great accessory for your Mac at home or even on its own. The simple truth is that there is a lot of misconceptions about AppleTV. As it happens, Magnus wrote a number of articles recently on www.shufflegazine.com about AppleTV, you should take a look at them. Part of the problem is that there is no iTunes store for music, movies and TV in the Middle East, thereby somewhat reducing the functionality of AppleTV. Q: The iTunes store accepts only US credit cards. My local credit card, a Visa Platinum issued by NBD, is not accepted by the iTunes store. I cannot open an account with them with this credit card. -M.H. A: Unfortunately you seem to have some incorrect information. Incorrect in that the UAE iTunes store accepts local, UAE credit cards. If you're on the US store it won't accept your UAE card as you've discovered. You need to change to the UAE store and set up a UAE iTunes account. (To do this, click on the flag at the bottom of the iTunes store screen.) The (big) caveat with this is that in the UAE store there are only apps and games for iPhone and iPod touch; it is in effect only an AppStore, so no movies and music.

Q: In your latest edition of Shufflegazine, you have, in the "iPhone 3.0 What You Need to Know" article, a section that mentions tethering. This feature is currently not supported by Etisalat. However, there are many ways to unlock this feature. Can you advise me whether this will effect my carrier settings, and if so will it also effect my data package with Etisalat? -L.N. A: Yes, it's not supported by Etisalat in the sense that they've not released the carrier settings yet that would enable it, but as you point out there are other ways of getting it to work. They informed us, shortly after the 3.0 software was released, that they were working on it, but it's still not available. How third parties have been able to put together these settings, but Apple/Etisalat has not we don't understand, but that's a topic for another day. I've had Etisalat PR people tell me that tethering works though, and that it is official. However, I am not sure what you mean if it will affect your carrier settings. I use tethering and it works fine and all other things work fine too. I got the third party carrier update from www. Emiratesmac.com. It will affect your data package in the sense that any data transferred during tethering will count towards your monthly limit, but other than that it should have no effect.
Q: I would like to know if it is possible for Entourage email to be imported to Outlook mail, or is there any tweak or third party software that we need to use? -A.L. A: There is no direct way of doing it that I'm aware of. One easy solution, at least if you don't have too much email saved, is to use an IMAP account such as Gmail or MobileMe to move the email. You then simply copy all your saved email into that IMAP account with Entourage. Then when you're done, you open the same account using Outlook and you'll have access to all the emails. After that you can of course copy the emails from the IMAP account into an Outlook folder on the PC if you so desire. Q: I want to buy jailbreak application. I am in Ajman in UAE. -N.M. A: I have to assume that you mean you want to jailbreak your iPhone. Since you don't say which iPhone you have, it's hard to give specific answer. However, one thing is clear, that you should not have to pay for a jailbreak application. There may be individuals who charge you for performing a jailbreak, but then they charge you for the service not the software. The software you need to jailbreak an iPhone is freely and widely available online, as well as instructions for what to do.

Shufflegazine had a chance to sit down and talk about ProgrammeVille and software piracy in general with Alastair de Wet of Adobe. Alastair also represents the BSA (Business Software Alliance) in the Middle East and Africa.

Q: Can you tell us about the background to the ?ProgrammeVille game A: First of all, anti-piracy is not the sexiest subject to talk about and it's a message that's difficult to carry across to anyone really. We do a lot of emailing, mail outs and other campaigning and that's pretty effective, but we wanted something different, something that could reach out to tough target markets. Our creative customers are often among our most noncompliant customers for different reasons, we see that again and again. Customers that you might think should know better, creating their own intellectual property, often end up not following their own rules so to speak. So that's one tough market to reach, and another one is education. So we created the game and thought we'll see how it goes. The game was developed in Flash and intended just for South Africa initially, but when we released it, it just went crazy. We started getting people from all over the world using it and sending us emails and things about it.
30 | iPEOPLE Q: What was the idea behind the game? What did you want to accomplish with it? A: We spent a lot of time thinking about how to make the game playable. Again, anti-piracy is not a very interesting subject to most people, so the game has to playable first and foremost before even thinking about any anti-piracy message. With the first version we launched over a year ago we saw people from all over spending over nine minutes on average playing the game, and that blew us away. The storyline itself carries issues of antipiracy, and it's a lot about educating the market by using humor and their own language, and weave that into a gaming story. Then we launched the second version recently, updating it for new products obviously, and taking more about different types of software pirates. The first version was more about types of piracy, so we changed the focus slightly and added a dimension to it. Q: What's the hardest issue dealing with software piracy? A: The hardest issue is intellectual property, making people understand that and appreciate it. Software piracy is just a small subset of intellectual property. And it's a difficult topic to tackle. When does intellectual property come into existence? For example, when you as a creative create this logo and sell it to the client, when does it transfer to the client? And the second biggest issue is to just get customers to understand what's available and licensing of software, how that works. They often say "it's too expensive", but they only look at the standard boxed product and not at volume licensing, student discounts and other offers. Also there's a big issue in terms of if they're looking at what's appropriate for them; not everyone needs a "pro" version, for example.
Q: A small business who needs a few copies of let's say CS4, they could spend that considerable amount of money on something else they need very desperately. How do you argue with them about piracy? A: The question has to be what it's worth to them having the software to do what they need to do. Could they do their work without those copies of CS4? Are there alternatives? To be honest all our products have alternatives, but they are not always an option that companies want to look at for different reasons. Most of our customers need the compatibility and the functionality of our software. So they need to look at it in terms of what does using our software add to their productivity. Piracy to me is a moral issue, it's not an argument about pricing. Q: Finally, is the game available in Arabic? A: Not at this moment, but it's something we definitely intend to look at. Now that Adobe has its own office in the region, here in Dubai, that's one of the things we'll work on.

Video Junkie I enjoy video as much as the next guy, and although I would not describe me as a "film buff" I do find myself on imdb.com more than I care to admit. Even though I'm not old enough to remember much of the days before VHS tapes, I do remember when video first started arriving on computers, at least in a way that the general public could view, create and edit video themselves. This happened in the form of Apple's QuickTime, which arrived in the first version in 1991. That was a year before I went to college, and at the time I was using a Macintosh IIcx with a whopping 16MHz processor. Yes, that's megahertz, not gigahertz. Through someone I knew, I managed to get my hands on a CD from Apple with one of the very first versions of QuickTime on it. It was like a brand new world had opened up to me; like I had stepped through the wardrobe door and passed into Narnia. I could sit for hours watching the sample videos on the disk over and over again. I ran the sample applications and I was just generally

in awe of what Apple presented to me. Although I'm not sure it was on that disc, I remember one video especially; it was a TV ad for a Macintosh Quadra. (shuffle.to/quadra) "But what makes this technology so revolutionary... is what it runs on: your imagination," the voice said in the ad. These first glimpses of video on my Mac certainly did that; they happened to run on my Mac, but it just as much affected my imagination. Perhaps I should tell you that these first attempts with video were very low resolution compared to today. It was not uncommon for a good movie to be something like 160x100 pixels, and 320x200 was enormous. In file size, a few megabytes was large, and HD certainly was not even imagined back then. Back then, 10 frames per second was good quality; today we expect 20 or 30 frames per second. Video has certainly come a long way in a relatively short period of time, and I for one look forward to what digital video will offer us in the future.

اعترافات مدمن على الفيديو أستمتع كثيرًا بأفالم الفيديو ،حيث أجد نفسي على موقع ( )imdb.comأكثر مما أرغب االعتراف به ،لكنني ال أعتبر نفسي عاشقًا لألفالم .ومع أنني لم أشهد العصر الذي سبق شرائط الفيديو في إتش إس ،VHSمازلت أتذكر عندما بدأ الفيديو يصل إلى الحواسب المنزلية .وحدث هذا في البداية مع برنامج «كويك تايم» الذي ظهر أول إصدار له في عام ،١٩٩١أي قبل عام واحد من التحاقي بالجامعة .امتلكت حينها حاسب «ماكينتوش تو سي إكس »Macintosh IIcxبمعالج تصل سرعته إلى ١٦ميغا هرتز .وتمكنت عندها من الحصول على قرص مدمج من «آبل» مع أحد اإلصدارات األولى من «كويك تايم .»QuickTimeوفي ذلك الوقت ،شعرت كما لو أن عالمًا جديدًا قد فتح أبوابه أمامي ،كما لو أنني خطوت داخل باب الخزانة ووجدت نفسي في عالم «نارنيا .»Narniaوقضيت ساعات وساعات أمام شاشة الكمبيوتر وأنا أشاهد نفس األفالم التقديمية التي احتواها البرنامج .ولست متأكدًا اآلن إن كان هذا الفيلم على ذلك القرص ،ولكنني أتذكر جيدًا أحد إعالنات «آبل» التلفزيونية التي تروج «ماكينتوش كوادرا ،»Macintosh Quadra

ونص اإلعالن الذي جاء كالتالي« :ما يجعل من هذه التكنولوجيا ثورية أنها تعمل على خيالكم» .وهذا ما حصل معي عندما شاهدت الفيديو على حاسبي «ماك» ألول مرة. ربما يجب أن أذكر بأن الفيديو في تلك األيام كان ذو دقة منخفضة جدًا مقارنة بما نراه اليوم.أتذكر أننا اعتبرنا فيديو بدقة ١٠٠ x ١٦٠بيكسل جيد النوعية ،فما بالك بفيديو تصل دقته إلى ٢٠٠ x ٣٢٠بيكسل .وبالنسبة للحجم ،فقد اعتبر فيديو بحجم ال يتجاوز الميغا بيكسل الوحيد في غاية الكبر ،بينما لم نتخيل حتى وجود فيديو عالي التعريف .HDوبينما نتوقع اآلن ٢٠و ٣٠إطار في الثانية ،كنا نرضى بعشرة إطارات في الثانية بل ونعتبرها ذات نوعية عالية. لقد خطت هذه التكنولوجيا خطوات عمالقة وفي وقت قصير جدًا ،وال أستطيع االنتظار ألشهد ما سيجلبه هذ العصر الرقمي إلى الفيديو.

هل سيؤثر هذا النوع من الصحافة -إن استطعنا تسميته كذلك -على العمل الصحافي االحترافي؟ بالطبع... هل سيؤثر عليها بشكل سلبي أو إيجابي؟ ربما االثنين.. هل سيؤثر هذاعلى نظرتنا للعالم، وتعريفنا للحقيقة؟ ربما.. إلى أين سنتجه نتيجة تبنينا لهذا عملنا بها التغيير وتخلينا عن مقاييس ِ ٍ منذ سنوات طويلة؟ ال أدري ،وال أعتقد أن لهذا أي ذرة من األهمية.. وفي اعتقادنا بأنه ربما علينا وقف مثل هذا التغيير ،وبل وأننا قادرين على صد موجة تغيير مثل هذه ،ال يكمن سوى غرورنا.
بالنسبة لي ،أعد نفسي بأن ال أقبل أي شئ كأمر مفروغ منه ،سواء كان ذلك خبرًا تنشره أكبر محطات التلفاز اإلخبارية أو فيلمًا قام أحدهم بإرساله. وفي نفس الوقت ،لن أنكر أنه بفضل التكنولوجيا التي أحملها في جيبي، أستطيع التقاط رفة جناح فراشة تلخص جمال العالم ،أو مشهد إطالق نار غير عادل يلخص قبحه...

لحظاتنا المسجلة من أفالم بسيطة عن أعياد حفالت الميالد إلى مجال مستقل من مجاالت الصحافة ،وكل هذا في زمن لم يتجاوز العشرين سنة .ما زلت أتذكر أشرطة الفيديو السوداء على رفوف مكتبة بيتنا ..عيد ميالد ريم العاشر ،صيف ١٩٩٥ في تايلند ،سهرة جميلة في الكويت، منوعات .وأرفع رأسي اآلن ألرى عددًا من أقراص الدي في دي DVDالمدمجة مرتبة بأناقة فائقة ،وعددًا من األقراص الصلبة عصرية المظهر مبعثرة في أرجاء المنزل ،لتحتوي معظم ذكرياتي، جنبًا إلى جنب مع محاوالتي اإلبداعية من صور ،وأفالم قصيرة وكتابات مشتتة . في سنوات وجودي السبع والعشرين على هذه األرض ،عشت زمن اندثار أشرطة الفيديو ،وزمن صعود تصوير الفيديو الرقمي ،وهذا أذهلني .لكني ٌ زمن أتاح اآلن أعيش زمنًا جديدًا، لنا فرصة تسجيل أي لحظة نرغب بتخليدها ،بمجرد إخراج الهاتف المتحرك من جيبنا ،أو الكاميرا الرقمية من ٌ زمن أتاح لنا ،ليس فقط حقيبة يدنا. أن نكسر حاجز االحترافية في عالم التصوير ،بل وفي عالم المونتاج أيضًا.
أصبح بإمكان كل من لديه بعض الوقت، وبعض المخيلة ،والكثير من الشغف أن يخلق فيلمًا قصيرًا .القليل منا ينجح بإنتاج ما قد يبدو احترافيًا ،فإخراج فيلم هو عالم بحد ذاته ،ومعرفة ال يستهان بها .ولكن ما يميز اليوم عن األمس ،هو أن أي فيلم ،بغض النظر عن تفاهته أو عبقريته ،له مشاهديه .لم يعد هناك من يقرر ما الذي يستحق النشر أم ال، أو ما ينصاع إلى مقاييس الصناعة أو ُ أردت ،لكان الثقافة أو الرأي العام أو ال .إن بإمكاني التقاط فيديو ألصابعي وهي تتحرك على لوحة المفاتيح البيضاء ،مع أزيز غسالة الثياب خلف ظهري ،ومواء قطتي المتوسل وهي تحاول لفت انتباهي عن الشاشة المضيئة أمامي. سواء كان ذلك جيدًا أم ال ،لم يعد ذلك باألمر المهم .ما هو مهم هنا، أنه بإمكاني تخليد لحظة من لحظات حياتي ،والتعبير عن فكرة معينة في رأسي ،وكل ما أحتاجه هو هاتف متحرك، ووصلة إنترنت ،وبرنامج لتعديل الفيديو. ولم يتوقف الفيديو الرقمي عند ذلك، بل وتمكن من كسر حاجر االحترافية الصحافية ،حيث بدأنا اآلن نتابع مدونات الفيديو بنفس االهتمام الذي قد نتابع فيه أى خبر تنقله أحد محطات األخبار
األخرى .أصبحت الصحافة في متناول الجميع ،بدءًا من المدونات النصية إلى مدونات الفيديو إلى التقارير الصحافية. ولكن ،ما يميز الفيديو هو المصداقية التي بدأ ينالها حتى في األجواء الصحافية التقليدية .مؤخرًا قام موقع «يو تيوب» بإنشاء موقع متخصص بهذا النوع من األخبار ،وأحد أهم برامج «سي إن إن »CNNاآلن ،تعتمد بشكل رئيسي وبشكل حصري على أخبار وأفالم فيديو يتم إرسالها من أشخاص عاديين، أشخاص لم يدرسوا فن الصحافة أو طبيعة التقرير الصحافي .بفضل هؤالء، تمكنا من رؤية موجة تسونامي وهي تلتهم شواطئ أندونسيسا وتايلند، وعرفنا عن حقيقة الوضع في إيران. قد يقف الكثيرون ضد هذا النوع من الصحافة ألن مصداقيتها تعتمد على شخص ليس بمسؤول أمام قانون أخالقيات المهنة عن الخبر الذي قام بنشره ،وهذا صحيح .ولكن هل تلتزم وسائل اإلعالم التقليدية بذلك الدستور؟ وماذا عن األوقات التي يتم فيها منع وسائل اإلعالم التقليدية من تغطية خبر معين؟ فعالمنا اليوم أصغر من أن تقبع بضع أركانه في الظلمة بعيدًا عن أعين اآلخرين.

تجربة شراء سيئة قام أحد قراء موقع ()SaudiMac.com باالتصال بي ليخبرني عن تجربته مع «موبايلي» وذلك عند شرائه لهاتف «آي فون ثري جي» في الشهور الماضية. قام هذا القارىء بشراء خطة «آي فون ثري جي» ذات ٩٩ريا ً ال سعوديًا ،أي أنه دفع ٢٧٠٠ريال سعودي مقابل الهاتف، وسيقوم بدفع رسم شهري قدره ٩٩ ريا ً ال سعوديًا وذلك لمدة سنة .ولكن موظف المبيعات المسؤول حينها قام بتسجيل العقد تحت الخطة ذات ١٩٩ريا ً ال سعوديًا ،التي يبلغ سعر الهاتف فيها ١٢٠٠ريال سعودي ،بينما احتفظ بـالمبلغ المتبقي الذي بلغ ١٥٠٠ريال .تم حل هذه المشكلة الحقًا ،وتم إرجاع النقود إلى هذا القارئ ،ولكنني أعتقد أن مثل هذا الخطأ ال يجب أن يحدث إطالقًا.
االستعدادات إلطالق «آي فون ثري جي إس» سيتم إطالق «آي فون ثري جي إس» في المملكة السعودية في أغسطس، وذلك وفقًا لعرض «آبل» التقديمي خالل مؤتمر مطوري البرامج العالمي WWDC في يونيو الماضي .حتى وقت كتابة هذا المقال ،لم تقم «موبايلي» باإلعالن عن يوم إطالق الهاتف ،بينما تستمر الشركة ببيع الطراز األقدم «آي فون ثري جي» بنفس السعر الذي بدأت فيه المبيعات منذ خمسة أشهر .في المقابل ،تم تخفيض أسعار «آي فون ثري جي» في العديد من البلدان وذلك لالستعداد إلطالق «آي فون ثري جي إس».

«آي فون» السعودي ودعم «موبايلي» بقلم خالد أ. لحاسبه «ماك» ،وذلك الستخدام خدمة بيانات الهاتف لالتصال باإلنترنت على الحاسب ،والتي أطلقت عليها «موبايلي» اسم «موبايلي كونيكت Mobily .»Connectأخبرني موظفي مركز العمالء بأنه علي أن أقوم بتنزيل برنامج يعرف باسم «بي دي إيه نيت ،»PDAnetوهذا البرنامج هو برنامج مصمم الختراق نظام تشغيل «آي فون» ،Jailbreakويلغي ضمانة «آبل» الموجودة على الهاتف. بعد حوالي الشهر ،قمت باالتصال مرة أخرى ،ليقال لي بأن «موبايلي ال تدعم الربط» وأن علي أن «أبحث عن حل على غوغل» .من الجدير بالذكر هنا ،أن ميزة الربط تتوفر بشكل رسمي على صفحة «موبايلي» الخاصة بهاتف «آي فون». لألسف ،هذا ينطبق أيضًا على خدمة «فيجوال ميل »Visual Mailالموجودة فقط على موقع «موبايلي» دون الهواتف.
ُ تحدثت في مقاالت سابقة من سلسلة «آي فون السعودي» عن عدم دعم «آبل» للغة العربية في هاتفها «آي فون» ،واآلن وصل هذا الدعم مع نظام التشغيل .٣,٠ أما اآلن فأرغب بالتحدث عن مشكلة أكبر تواجه «آي فوي ثري جي »iPhone 3G في السعودية ،أال وهي شركة االتصاالت «موبايلي». إقفال «آي فون ثري جي» منذ أول يوم تم فيه إطالق الهاتف في المملكة ،أصر موظفو شركة «موبايلي» على أن الشركة قامت بإقفال هواتفها «آي فون» لتعمل فقط مع شبكتها. وما زلنا نصر بأن الهواتف التي تباع في السعودية عن طريق «موبايلي» هي بالفعل غير مقفلة من «آبل» .ولكن، ما زال موظفي «موبايلي» يدعون بأنه تم إقفال هاتف «آي فون ثري جي» إلى شبكتهم ،حتى بعد ٦شهور من إطالق الهاتف.
أين هو مركز تصليح «آي فون»؟ قام أحد أصدقائي بأخذ هاتفه «آي فون» إلى «موبايلي» وذلك إلصالحه ،ولكن لألسف ،ال يوجد مركز لدعم «آي فون ثري جي» من «موبايلي» .بل وقيل لي بأن أتبع التعليمات التالية :على المستخدم أخذ صورة من الشاشة، ثم إرسالها إلى «آبل» واالنتظار. أما صديقي اآلخر من جدة ،فقد وجد بأن «موبايلي» ال تستطيع إصالح العطل .وعندما أخذ الهاتف إلى «الكمبيوترات العربية Arab ( »Computersالوكيل الرسمي لـ«آبل») ،قيل له بأنه ال يوجد ما يستطيعوا فعله. ال يوجد خدمة عمالء ألجهزة «اي فون» قمت باالتصال بمركز عمالء «موبايلي» ألسأل عن ميزة الربط Tetheringالتي تمكن المستخدم من استخدام هاتفه كموديم

The only real difference between them is the design of the two speakers, and that on the remote control for the 3300 you can find an additional 3.5mm audio plug to which you can, for example, connect a headset. Where it matters, in the sound, these two sets produce some of the best sound I’ve ever heard come out of similar speakers. Only with a much more expensive stereo system have I been more “into” the music I’ve listened to. Perhaps if you’re a true audiophile you would say
different, but as a layman, that’s my verdict. Turning the music up really high and jamming in the Shufflegazine meeting room, I’m sure the Aramex guy though I was crazy. Each set consist of a large sub woofer to which everything else is connected: two tower-like speakers, a remote control for volume control, and the AC power adapter. Unfortunately, this can very easily create a rats nest of cables if you’re not careful. Also be aware that this set will take up considerable space on a desk or table. It’s not a good choice if you don’t have that much space to spare. These speakers require lots
of space, not just for them to fit physically, but it’s also a bad idea to cram them into a small space because the sound will suffer. In choosing between the two, you have to decide which style you like better, and whether you need that additional 3.5mm outlet. Either way you go, you’ll get great sound for your iPod, iPhone or Mac.

«إيديفاير »٣٣٠٠ و«إيديفاير »٣٣٥٠ بقلم ماغنوس نستد قمت في هذا المقال بجمع منتجين معًا، وذلك لسبب بسيط وهو تشابه أدائهما بالرغم من اختالف تصميمهما ،إلى جانب أن سماعات «إيديفاير »Edifier 3300 ٣٣٠٠ تحتوي على منفذ صوت ٣,٥مم إضافي في جهاز التحكم الخاص بالصوت لتسمح بوصل سماعات أذن لمن يرغب بذلك. وعند تقييم الشيء األساسي واألهم وهو جودة الصوت ،تتفوق ٌّ كل من السماعات على مثيالتها من السماعات األخرى بصوت شديد النقاء ،ال يمكن سوى لألنظمة األكثر وغالء من التغلب عليه .قد يعترض تقدمًا ً عشاق الصوتيات على هذا التقييم ،ولكن بالنسبة للمستخدم العادي ،أعتقد أن هذه السماعات تقدم أفضل صوت يمكن الحصول عليه في فئتها .لم أستطع مقاومة رفع الصوت إلى أعلى مدى وأنا أجرب هذه السماعات في قاعة االجتماعات في مكاتبنا ،وال بد أن ساعي البريد من «اراميكس »Aramexاعتقد أن شيئًا ما قد مسني! ّ

The notebook tends to slip a bit with this option, because of the smooth nylon fabric, but it’s no a big deal. It needs to be stylish, have enough pockets to fit the notebook and other things (women, eh?), and be reasonably priced. So, when I first saw this bag, I was eager to review it; its color and simplistic design upon first glance appealed to me. The bag comes in Silver and Blue for the 13-inch, with light pink and blue interiors, respectively. It has zips on both sides to open the bag, with hook-and-loop fasteners for added security, and lots of padding too. Keeping with its simple design, the bag has few pockets, which is not enough for a girl like me who needs lots of pockets for stuff that couldn’t fit in my handbag, but probably enough for the average person. There’s a zippered pocket
at the front large enough to fit a power adaptor, connectors, and your iPod or iPhone. There’s no partitioning within this pocket, so I’d advise you have cases for your iPod and iPhone before sticking them in there so they’re protected if they move around. It also has a back pocket for all those papers you plan on taking to your next meeting. There’s a hidden pocket inside which doesn’t really fit much aside from an iPod connector- I don’t see its use and I think they
The handle and shoulder strap felt comfortable with my Macbook Air in the bag, but might be a strain with the Macbook or MacBook Pro 13-inch. Better support for the handle would be nice, like adding an extra one or adding some padding for extra comfort. One flaw I see with this bag is the angle it ends up in when carrying it, with either the handle or strap- it’s a little strange. I think it’s something STM needs to work on in future designs. All in all, it’s a cool bag. STM kept it stylish with its simplicity and colors, but hasn’t overlooked things like padding, which is also important. This bag is a good choice for those who tend to go to a lot of meetings or like to work in cafes- nothing heavy duty- and want something light and simple to carry their notebook in.

Altec Lansing BackBeat 906 Bluetooth headphones by Magnus | magnus@shufflegazine.com After having used these headphones for just a few hours, I said in a tweet that I was in love, and that's still true. I'm not an audiophile, so headphones and speakers are not something that get me all worked up, but these headphones I really like. They're Bluetooth enabled, and work with iPhone even for answering incoming calls. If you want to use them with a device that doesn't have Bluetooth there's a small dongle included. The sound is not the best I've heard through in-ear headphones but it's pretty darn good. For some, the over the ear and around the neck construction is going to be difficult to handle, especially if you have long hair, but for me it's not been a problem. They're comfortable to wear and you can adjust them in various ways to fit you. On the ear pieces you find buttons and controls for taking a call, pausing music, volume and more. Pairing with iPhone was a breeze and even calls sound great. I did experience a few glitches. For example, sometimes after hanging up after a call with iPhone 3G I've had to manually connect the BackBeats again, they seemed to drop the Bluetooth connection. But even with that problem- which I hope Altec Lansing fixes in future models- I can't do anything but to give these headphones full marks for innovative design and functionality. Sure, they aren't cheap, but they're well worth the price.

We rely on these little storage devices to carry anything from Word documents, to photos and more. Some of these files may contain sensitive information that we really don't want anyone else to be able to see, if it happened that we lost the flash drive. Kingston is not the first company to tackle this issue, but they offer the best solution I've seen so far in their DataTraveler Vault Privacy Edition. (DTVP) When you connect the Kingston DTVP to your Mac an icon looking like a CD appears on your desktop. You then have to run the DTVP.app from it. You can also copy the DTVP.app to your Applications folder or elsewhere to have easier access to it. The first time you run the application, it will ask you to set up a password. Later, after the correct password has been entered, the application will mount the actual flash drive and you can use it like any other such device. Just unmount it when you're done, and your information is safe from prying eyes using 256-bit AES encryption. Overall, the Kingston DTVP offers very good value for money. Compared to a regular flash USB drive, it's a bit more expensive, but with the added security it offers, it's a good choice for security-conscious Mac users. The Kingston DTVP comes in models with storage space from 2GB to 32GB.

We reviewed Blue Mic’s SnowFlake in our June 2009 issue, and basically the EyeBall is a SnowFlake with a webcam built in to it. They’ve retained the great sound quality of the SnowFlake as well as the innovative case/ stand. With a gentle push with a finger you get the camera lens to pop out from the side of the microphone. Push it back in again and it snaps into place. Plug in the USB cable to your Mac, and that’s all there is to it. Most applications I tested picked up the EyeBall automatically, including iChat, Skype and QuickTime Player. However, iMovie ‘09 did not see SnowFlake at all. That’s too bad as it could function as an input device for video podcasters. It’s supposed to record video at 1280x1024 pixels, which Blue Mic calls “Super HD video resolution”. However, in all the applications I tried I could only get 640x480. The video produced is pretty good for such a small lens. Blue Mic says in the documentation that you should allow 10s for the EyeBall to adjust to the light in a particular situation, and that’s about right. A built-in iSight seems to adjust much faster, and this will become an issue for some users of EyeBall.

If you have the Panasonic G1 from last year, you basically have a G1H minus the video recording capabilities. More on that below. The GH1 is a 12.1 megapixel digital still and video camera designed for the Micro Four Thirds system. This makes the GH1 is slightly smaller than Canon's 500D, for example, because there is no glass prism, as there are in DSLRs. Instead you look at an LCD display both on the rear of the body as well as in the viewfinder. Panasonic has bundled the GH1 with a new kit lens. It's a Panasonic G-Vario 14-140mm f4.5-5.8 ASPH. That's the equivalent of 28-280mm in 35mm format. From my testing of the lens, it seems very well built, as does the GH1 overall. Although still image quality is really impressive, it doesn't quite go up to the quality levels offered by DSLRs, but there is not enough difference for most regular hobby photographers to notice. Overall the GH1 focuses and meters very well. Sometimes it happens that the autofocus "hunts" a little bit to try to find the correct focus, but it's nothing out of the ordinary. Focusing is fast and silent. One thing I find annoying with the GH1 is that it's hard to judge sharp focus since you look at a pretty low resolution LCD display, instead of the real picture through a glass prism.
Video is where the GH1 really shines. It can record true 1080p HD video (1920x1080) at 24 fps or 720p HD video (1280x720) at 60 fps saved as motion JPG or AVCHD. The "HD" label on the kit lens shows that it's especially made with video in mind, with a design keeping sound to a minimum. One other thing that impressed with the GH1 and video, is that Panasonic has gone all-out with continuous
autofocus, face detection, intelligent exposure, optical image stabilization, as well as use of the scene selector. That's impressive and something we'll expect in all comparable digital cameras from now on.

For Mac users the software for processing RAW photos from the GH1 might be an issue. It's called SilkyPix and it has a non-standard interface that is pretty tricky to get used to. I tried opening a RAW file from the GH1 in iPhoto 09, Aperture 2.1.3 and Photoshop CS3 with no success. These are basically the same things I pointed out in my review of Panasonic's DMC-LX3 earlier this year. The video imports into iMovie '09 without problems. In conclusion, what really makes the GH1 worth looking at is the video mode, which beats almost anything else available right now. So if you want a small camera that takes great still photos, and you want to shoot a lot of HD video, the GH1 is a good choice. My only real reservation is the price; for the same price or even less you get a DSLR. A caveat to remember is that Panasonic, as at the time of writing, has not revealed the UAE price, but they've said it might be in excess of AED7000.

Epson's PowerLite 1725 projector features a contrast ratio of 2000:1, maximum resolution of 1024x768 pixels, and a brightness of 3000 ANSI lumens. With the low maximum resolution and without 16:9 aspect ration (only 4:3) it's not a good choice for movies. However, it's small and light enough to serve as a portable business projector. One feature that is coming to more and more projectors is wireless connections. This is present in the 1725. Instead of plugging in the normal cable between your Mac and the projector you can send your presentation from the Mac to the projector over Wi-Fi. This is a very useful functionality. We had great problems getting it to set up however, but once set up it worked without a hitch. You use the supplied Epson EasyMP software to then show a presenation from PowerPoint or Keynote on the projector. You can also select an MPEG 2 video file to be shown by the projector. The whole proecdure for getting this to work is a bit clumsy, and I hope Epson makes it simpler in future versions. Basically, it should be much easier to set up and more transparent to use. All in all, the Epson PowerLite 1725 projector is small, portable, and full of features like Wi-Fi connection. If you're in the market for a good business projector that you can take with you, it's a good choice, but be prepared to pay a premium for the Wi-Fi functionality.

بقلم ماغنوس نستد If you are out and about a lot with your Mac notebook, you will want to protect it from being stolen if you have to leave it even for short periods of time. Or perhaps you need to protect your desktop Mac from being carried away by someone. Dicota's locks offer a high-quality steel wire covered in plastic, a lock in one end and a loop in the other to thread the lock through to tie your Mac down to a table, radiator, or whatever else is available. The Guardian II has a combination lock with positions for four digits. With a simple maneuver you set the code and once the lock is in place, you scramble the numbers so others can't unlock it. If you feel more at home with a physical key lock, then the Secure is for you. (It's the black one in the photos.) It comes with two keys, and you lock and unlock it like any other key lock, nothing special about it. One possible issue is that if you have the new MacBook Pro 13-inch, the size of the lock might interfere with the optical drive. Which lock you choose depends on which method of locking you prefer. Both are made from high-quality material and even though they form no guarantee against theft, having a lock attached to your Mac at least reduces the risk of it being taken by someone.

Altec Lansing usually cranks out good-sounding speakers, but I think the inMotion Max produces the best sound I've heard yet from the manufacturer. The sound is rich, with a surprising amount of bass. That's the best thing about the Max. Since it takes both iPods and iPhones as well as receiving FM radio, you're pretty much covered for your audio needs. If you do need more, there's an AUX connection on the back of the Max speakers. They're not the best-looking iPod speakers though, I must say, but it's a design that grows on you. They're fairly bulky compared to some other speakers, especially because they're fairly tall. But on
the average desk, the size won't be a problem. Accompanying the speakers is a fairly basic remote control; I think Altec Lansing could have spent some more R&D money on it. The inMotion Max speakers can run on battery, but the one thing I think I can complain about is the relatively short battery life. In our testing we got just over three hours. So even though it's portable, it won’t make it very far without being plugged in. And that's a shame, because in terms of sound this is a great set of portable speakers for your iPod or iPhone.

My first reaction to Logitech's MX Air mouse is that it's a strange looking mouse. And if you look at it as just a mouse then you miss the point. The point is that besides working as a traditional mouse, it also functions in the air. You point it to your Mac's screen and you'll see the mouse cursor move. If you've ever used a Nintendo Wii you should get the idea. That sounds cool and it is, for about five seconds, then you wonder what's the point and you grab your old-fashioned trusted mouse instead. To get the MX Air working, you plug in a small dongle into a USB port on your Mac and as Apple fans we expect things to just work. Not so here, you have
to download and install drivers, (I thought we had moved past needing drivers, Logitech!) There were no Mac drivers with the MX Air that I tested, but you can get them from the Logitech web site (shuffle.to/mxairdrivers). You need this dongle because the MX Air works on the 2.4GHz spectrum, it's not Bluetooth. The good thing about that is that you should be getting more reliable and widerranging connections compared to Bluetooth. For use as a mouse it is, in my opinion, not very good. The shape is awkward for my hands at least, and I don't like how the buttons feel or how they are positioned. So, the redeeming value would then be in how it's used in the
air. This is a hard one to judge, but I have played a lot of Wii so I am used to the concept, but with the MX Air it just doesn't flow for me. The mouse cursor gets stuck somewhere and I have to wave the MX Air around for it to come back so I see what I'm doing. All in all it makes for a pretty frustrating experience. In conclusion, the MX Air is a cool-looking mouse, which can be used in the air sort of like a remote control. For some users that might be worth the relatively high price of the MX Air. If it was also a great mouse, I might have said it was a good idea. As it is now, it's just a cool idea that was poorly implemented.

Panasonic Lumix DMC-FX48 by Magnus | magnus@shufflegazine.com Panasonic's DMC-FX48 is a small, sleek, good-looking camera, following in the successful Lumix tradition. It boasts 12.1 megapixels, a Leica lens with 5x optical zoom, HD video recording, to name a few things. I used it on a recent trip for a week and it was actually the only camera I took with me, leaving my large DSLR at home. I left the camera on the "iA" (Intelligent Auto) mode as much as possible. In this mode the camera makes all the decisions about exposure. On the whole the FX48 made good decisions, in fact I was rather impressed how well it managed with some tricky scenes. It seemed to "hunt" a bit too much to find the right focus though. Panasonic's face recognition feature also works well. Once it even recognized Colonel Sander's face on a KFC sign. Photo quality is good but
putting exposures from the FX48 side-by-side with exposures from the 10 megapixel Panasonic Lumix DMC-LX3 revealed the LX3 captured a bit more detail even at a lower resolution. I attribute this to the LX3's superior lens. For such a small camera it's impressive that the FX48 records 1280x720 resolution video at 30fps saved in MOV format. The video is generally of high quality and it imports directly into iPhoto as well as iMovie, making it easily available to you on your Mac. One thing I found very annoying with the FX48 was that more times than I care to remember, the camera told
me right after I turned it on that I had to turn it off and on again, because something went wrong. That was annoying to say the least, and I hope Panasonic can fix it with a software update. All in all however, the FX48 is a very nice little camera that is easy to use and takes great still pictures, as well as video. However, it is a bit pricey.

We record video with mobile ;phones, still cameras, webcams and dedicated camcorders we edit the video with increasingly advanced software, and we upload the video to various Internet web sites. Since video is such a huge area covering many disciplines we simply have to try to narrow down what we cover in this issue. We want to give you some suggestions for what to think about when buying a camcorder. Also we’ll go over some fundamentals of different video formats and suggest web sites you might want to use to share your video creations.

HD, or High Definition, is all the rage today and to be frank, there’s no need for you to look at any non-HD camcorders if you’re looking to buy. HD is really many different formats, but is usually divided into two main ones: 720 and 1080. The number refers to how many vertical lines the video has (more means more detail can be shown). Put them together with the horizontal and you get 1280x720 and 1920x1080. Then you have “i” (interlaced) or “p” (progressive). A TV signal is interlaced as it draws ever other line each time the signal moves over the screen; a computer monitor is progressive in that it draws all the lines each time. In terms of frames per second, motion picture movies are 24 fps and video is 30 fps. Generally, higher frame rate means better video quality, but also more data volume and more processing power needed. Whether you need 720 or 1080 is debatable, but I would say buy as much as you can afford and a bit extra, so you can grow in to it in the future.

Codecs and containers
Video files have at least two different types: the container and the codec that is used inside the container. Think about it as the way a video file is structured and where everything inside it is, the container, and how each individual part of the content is formatted, the codec. A codec is basically how audio or video through encoding is organized into a stream of bytes that a computer understands. Decoding is when the computer turns those bytes into audio and video again that we can consume. It can become very complicated as some video formats can be both container and codec, but we'll leave that for another time.
Common container formats include AVI, MOV and WMV. Each one can contain video and sound encoded with different codecs. Common codecs include MPEG2 (used on DVDs), MPEG4, H.264, Sorenson, and DivX. Each one has drawbacks and benefits, but for most amateur videographers it's not necessary to know any intricate details of codecs and containers. If you edit your video with iMovie, for example, all you have to know is to go to Share and select what you intend to do with the movie, like upload to YouTube, send it to iTunes, etc. Based on that selection, iMovie then makes the appropriate choice.

Every new Mac comes with iLife '09, which includes iMovie. It is a very competent video editing application and more than enough for most users. But you may need something more advanced, something that allows you more control over your work and more versatility in your editing. In that case, there's obviously Final Cut Pro, which has been used to edit feature motion pictures. It can certainly do anything you would ever want it to, but it is expensive and has a steep learning curve. In between sits the often-ignored Final Cut Express. For about AED1400 you get, some would claim, about 80% of the functionality of Final Cut Pro. If you feel iMovie is not quite enough for what you need, take a look at Final Cut Express.

Converting video At some point you may have a video file that you want to convert into a different format, because you want to do something different with it. It might be you have an AVI file from a digital camera, and you want to import it into iTunes you need to convert it to a format iTunes understand. There are several applications that can help you with this conversion. VisualHub (www.techspansion.com) is discontinued, but still available for download from various web sites. Handbrake (handbrake.fr) is essential for anyone working with video and can convert many formats. Finally, I want to mention Evom (thelittleappfactory.com/evom), a delicious little app currently in beta, but that's full of promise.

Alternatives to camcorders Over the last few years some interesting alternatives to the traditional camcorder have appeared. Pioneered by the Flip series of compact video-recording cameras, now available in an HD model, many other manufactures have joined this particular segment. These cameras have in common that they're relatively cheap, and they are quick and simple to use. On the downside, they are often limited in terms of the lens and manual controls. If you want quick and easy video, these cameras are good choices, if you're serious about video, and want the best quality and creative control, get a dedicated camcorder.

Sony Ericsson is clearly hoping that the upcoming Satio will lure some potential buyers away from the iPhone. Sony Ericsson in Dubai provided a preproduction Satio for us to try for about a week. As with all pre-production units, it has potential issues like software glitches, and we reserve final judgment. The Satio is expected to launch in the Middle East in November this year. Design and screen In terms of design, the 3.5-inch screen is the most striking feature. Displaying 640x360 pixels in 16 million colors it is very bright and clear. On the back you will find a bulge, which you can pull to the side to reveal the camera and flash. It's a stylish phone, albeit not one that breaks any new ground in design. The Satio will be available in black, silver and red.

Multimedia Sony Ericssons says Satio will deliver the "ultimate multimedia experience," and that may be true. With the camera, screen and more it's a multimedia beast, that's for sure. By uploading the media to social networks, you can share your creativity with friends. According to Sony Ericsson representatives, there will also be a native Twitter client ready when the Satio launches.
Conclusion It's too early to finalize a conclusion about the Satio, as it is still in pre-production; we reserve that for a review of a shipping unit. Sony Ericsson has a lot of work left to do, especially in software, but come November, I'm sure they'll have a cool multimedia phone in the

At first glance, the camera application in iPhone 3GS looks like it always has, but there are two new additions. The first of which is the ability to focus in on any part of an image, which we'll deal with in another tutorial. The second part of the new application is the slider at the bottom. This allows you to toggle between video and still images. Even though the resolution is limited to 640x480, the video quality is very good, in fact one of the best I have seen from a phone.

When you finish recording, the phone presents you with the “Editing Page”, which allows you to trim the beginning and end of a clip. At the moment this will erase the original file, so once it's gone, it's gone for good. However, there are rumors that there will be an update that keeps the original intact. Internet tethering with iPhone on Etisalat and du by Oliver Jackson بقلم أوليفر جاكسون As a freelance photographer, it's very important for me to be available to clients at all times, not only over the phone, but also by email to send quotations and upload images. Since the release of the iPhone OS 3.0 update, I've been taking advantage of the new Internet tethering feature on my iPhone 3G to connect my MacBook Pro to Etisalat's 3.5G network while I'm out and about. However, when I first installed OS 3.0 there was a problem: where's the Internet tethering menu? [pic 1] Apple has disabled Internet tethering by default on the request of many carriers and to enable it requires an update from your mobile phone carrier. Etisalat does not officially support Internet tethering, so how can you enable iPhone Internet Tethering on the Etisalat or du networks? There are two ways to do this. The first is to visit a website like www.benm.at using the Safari browser from your iPhone and create a new .mobileconfig file using your carrier's Access Point Name settings, which you can then download directly to your iPhone. This is a very quick and simple way, but unfortunately it doesn't allow you to configure Internet Tethering and MMS at the same time. A better method is to download or create a carrier settings, or .ipcc file. Carrier settings files are updates from your carrier that can be sent to your iPhone through iTunes or over the data network as an MMS. They are used to configure many settings specific to that carrier, such as a logo, voicemail, data and MMS settings. To download the latest custom Etisalat or du .ipcc file for your iPhone, head over to the EmiratesMac. com forums, and visit the OS 3.0 FAQ. Important: IMMEDIATELY force-restart your iphone by holding down the power and the Home buttons for ten seconds until it shuts down automatically. Press the power button again to turn it back on. Once it's restarted you should be able to see the Cellular Data Network and Internet tethering menus under Settings>General>Network. That's it! Now you can enable Internet tethering on your iPhone. While you can also connect through Bluetooth, I recommend USB, as tethering takes a lot of power from the phone, and you may as well charge your iPhone while you're connected anyway. Go to Settings>General>Network>I nternet tethering, and follow the instructions on screen. Just decide how you would like to tether and the rest is automatic. Once it's activated you'll get a blue bar across the top of your screen.
