Editorial كلمة العدد بقلم عمران العويس When planning this issue I was thinking, “Living in a Windows world, why would we want to write about that?” Then I started thinking about the reality we face every day: as Mac users we’re somewhere around 5-10% of the market of personal computers and the rest is, by far, Windows. If you hang out with other Apple fans, you would be excused for thinking that Mac users rule the world, but of course we do have to fit into a world dominated by that Microsoft company. Many of us have to use Windows computers at work even though we choose to have a Mac at home. If it should so happen that we’re lucky enough to be able to use a Mac at work, we probably face connecting to a Windows-dominated network with all issues that brings. All of us at Shufflegazine know all too well what that means. At CENTIMETERCUBE we have a network with both Macs and Windows PCs, so we deal with some of the same issues you do, albeit on a small scale since we’re just around 20 users. Hopefully we can, with this issue, give you some ideas of how to survive in a Windows world.

Etisalat issues Blackberry update that cripples handsets In early July, Etisalat sent out a message to all their Blackberry subscribers saying that they should apply a “performance patch” so that the telecom company could “provide the best BlackBerry service and ultimate experience”. By many accounts, hundreds if not thousands of Etisalat Blackberry customers did just this and it made their handsets effectively useless, the patch causing the Blackberry handsets to be drained of all battery power in a few hours. Word about this spread very fast in the UAE where local blogs and newspapers picked it up and within a few days it went international, with sites like Wired. com, TheRegister.co.uk, and Engadget.com posting about it. The Register wrote, “An update pushed out to BlackBerry users on the Etisalat network in the United Arab Emirates appears to contain remotelytriggered spyware that allows the interception of messages and emails, as well as crippling battery life.” Calls to Etisalat’s phone support doesn’t seem to have produced any helpful information for users. Reports of conflicting information given by Etisalat support have also been frequent. Etisalat issued a statement saying that “a conflict in the settings in some BlackBerry devices has led to a slight technical fault while upgrading the software of these devices”. This, the statement continued “has resulted in reduced battery life in a very limited number of devices.” The upgrade issued by the telecom company “were required for service enhancements particularly for issues identified related to the handover between 2G to 3G network coverage areas.” On July 15, Etisalat issued a statement saying “Etisalat BlackBerry software upgrade aims to enhance performance of devices and facilitate handover from 3G to 2G networks”. This was
followed a few days later by a RIM (Research in Motion, makers of Blackberry) statement seemingly contradicting the Etisalat one: “The Etisalat update is not a RIM-authorized update and was not developed by RIM. Independent sources have concluded that the Etisalat update is not designed to improve performance of your BlackBerry Handheld, but rather to send received messages back to a central server.” Etisalat later again denied that the software update had any use other than a performance upgrade. iPhone 3GS available in UAE before official launch Ahead of Etisalat’s launch of iPhone 3GS in August, the latest model of Apple’s smartphone has already been sold in the region in some gray market stores. Prices seem to have fallen slightly from initially being available for over AED5000. Most of the iPhone 3GS available in the gray market seems to come from countries such as Italy, where unlocked iPhone 3GS has been available for some time now. At the time of going to press no specific date for their iPhone 3GS launch nor pricing was available from Etisalat. Samsung’s Jet not quite rocket-powered, but fast nonetheless Samsung has launched their Jet mobile phone to the Middle East market. Running a processor at 800MHz it’s been called the fastest mobile phone currently in the market. Featuring a 3.1-inch touch screen display, 5 megapixel camera with autofocus, which can also record video at 30fps, a MicroSD memory card slot, Wi-Fi, and Bluetooth, it compares favorably to other recently launched handsets. Samsung has developed a 3D-style interface for the Jet and the web browser is based on Web Kit, same foundation as for Apple’s Safari web browser. HP launches cartridge recycling initiative

Hewlett Packard (HP) launched the HP Planet Partners Programme in the Middle East. Under the details of the initiative, HP customers will get access to free recycling service for original HP print cartridges. According to HP, the company recycled more than 250 million ink and laser cartridges in 2008, something they hope to expand with the introduction of the service to the Middle East market.

MSI X340 is a MacBook Air look-alike
...»٣٤٠ حاسب «إم إس آي إكس »شبيه «ماك بوك إير Described on Gizmodo.com as the “poor man’s MacBook Air”, the MSI X340 slim Windows notebook was introduced by Grand Stores at an event in Dubai. In typical PC/Windows fashion the X340 beats MacBook Air on many specifications, if you take them point by point. The two areas where the MacBook Air is better is the CPU and graphics. Apple’s notebook has a 1.86GHz or 2.13GHz Intel Core 2 Duo CPU and Nvidia GeForce 9400M graphics processor; the X340 has a 1.4GHz Core 2 Solo ULV (Ultra Low Voltage) processor and integrated Intel GMA 4500MHD graphics. MSI put in a 320GB hard drive in the X340, a full compliment of ports (HDMI, VGA, Ethernet, mic, modem, 2-in-1 card reader, and an additional USB port). In terms of size and weight the two computers are very close to identical; the X340 is just a tiny bit larger and heavier than the MacBook Air. They also have almost identical screen size (13.4-inches versus 13.3-inches), but the X340 shows 1366x768 pixels in 16:9 aspect ratio compared to the MacBook Air’s 1280x800 pixels. The MSI X340’s main disadvantage is of course that it doesn’t run Mac OS X, at least not in any way that is supported by Apple. But it is an homage to Apple’s design that MSI decided to produce something so similar to the MacBook Air.

Grand Stores launch Nikon D3X in Middle East Grand Stores has launched the Nikon D3X Digital Single Reflex Camera (DSLR) in the Middle East market. The D3X is Nikon’s flagship professional camera, featuring 24.5 megapixels (6048x4032 pixels), 12 or 14 bit digital conversion, 51 point auto focus system, top speed of five frames per second continuous shooting (up to 130 frames), ISO100-1600 (can be extended to 50-6400), a 3-inch LCD display with LiveView functionality, magnesium-alloy construction with weather sealing, and a shutter release time lag of 0.04 seconds. All in all the D3X is clearly built for professionals demanding the highest in quality and functionality of their camera. The retail price for the Nikon D3X is AED32999, but it is offered at a special introductory price of AED29999. Together with the D3X, Grand Stores announced the Grand Stores Professional Services program (GSPS), aiming to give improved service to
professional photographers who buy their Nikon equipment from Grand Stores. Provided that the photographer buys his or her equipment from Grand Stores, they’re eligible for membership in the GSPS. Once a member they will qualify for discounts on purchases and other benefits. Grand Stores is also establishing a trade-up program as a part of the GSPS, which should help professionals stay current with technology. Panasonic introduces new generation of TV sets Panasonic introduced a new line of flat-panel TVs in their VIERA line in early July. The three main selling points are “full time full HD”, SD card slots, and exclusive Japanese manufacturing. A total of nine LCD and eight plasma high definition TV sets were introduced. Just a few weeks ago my Apple world suddenly turned to my Dell world. Dell’s PR company in Dubai invited me to Dell Suites ‘09 in Paris, a two-day event during which Dell executives brief press and others on what Dell is working on, show off their products, and talk a bit about future developments. Some of it I can’t talk about, but it’s clear that Dell has looked long and hard at Apple. Dell is now focusing hard on design, retail, and customization. Look at the Dell Adamo, the brand new notebook they released not long ago, and you can trace a lot of it’s design heritage to Apple products. At first it reminded me of the PowerBook G4 Titanium, but of course there’s also much of Apple’s aluminum notebooks
in the new Dell. The Texas-based PC manufacturer still doesn’t have the same integration between components of their systems that Apple has, and they probably never will. Apple controls the operating system as well as the hardware, so they can make sure it all works better together than Dell can. Whether that can change some in Dell’s favor with Windows 7 remains to be seen. I’m sure Dell has high hopes for the upcoming Windows version, and I think all of us, Mac fans or not, hope it’ll turn out better than Windows Vista. Personally, I think it’s good that PC manufacturers like Dell focus more on design; hopefully it will push Apple harder to come up with even cooler products.

Why so expensive?
I’m finding that Shufflegazine is more widely available lately; I’m seeing it in more and more stores, which is great. I already have a subscription, but my friends have become interested in the magazine as well, so the improved availability helps a lot in that case. Should I tell them to just look for it on the newsstands or is it better if they subscribe? -FA Distribution, including availability in magazine outlets, is something we’re working very hard on. If you have suggestions for specific outlets where you think the magazine should be, please let us know. To ensure that a reader gets a copy every month it’s better for them to subscribe. -Editor
Not long ago I bought the new 13-inch MacBook Pro here in Abu Dhabi and I think the price comes out as about 17% higher here compared to the US. Import duty is only 5%, right? I don’t understand why it’s that much more expensive. But it gets worse. At Grand Stores they wanted AED1100 for a Nikon lens that on Amazon.com cost $220. That’s over 30% more expensive here! Why is it so much more expensive? I would like to ask if you could do an article on that. -AK It’s a mystery that many of us are thinking about a lot, AK. We have done price-comparisons before and I’m not sure we’ve ever found a good answer as to why there is such a significant difference. Certified Apple Doctor Q: Hello, I have tried several times to load Adobe Flash player on my MacBook (Mac OS X 10.5.7). My system software is up to date. I ran Tiger on my previous MacBook, but never had problems with Adobe. Has anyone had similar problems, or now a fix for this? A: This seems to be quite a common problem and I’ve run into it myself in the past. Usually the problem is fixed by downloading and running Adobe’s Flash uninstaller, available at shuffle.to/removeflash.
Q: Hi all. I recently bought a Power PC G4 MDD. (Loving it!) However it has a Geforce MX AGP card, so I thought of upgrading it to a Geforce 6200 AGP. Is it possible to run a card meant for Windows in Mac? A: It can be done, but not with all cards. To do it usually requires new firmware. (That’s the software on the card.) I would suggest you Google the card and see if there’s Mac compatible firmware for it. If there is not then your chances are very slim that you can do what you’re looking for. Even if there is a firmware for Mac for that card, be aware that it’s most likely an unofficial version so if you run into problems your card is not covered under warranty.
Q: Just want to ask one thing. We want to reformat our Mac laptop, but we lost the CD. What we can do? A: Perhaps the most obvious solution is to ask if a friend can lend you the disc. If that doesn’t work out, you could always go and buy a copy of Mac OS X 10.5 Leopard. You don’t say what operating system you run so I can only assume on this point.
Q: I have a Blackberry Bold and I bought a 8GB memory card for it to keep music and movies on it. After partnering the Bold with my Mac I try to send files over to the Bold, but it takes forever. What can I do to make it faster? A: There’s nothing you can do really to speed up Bluetooth. Bluetooth is just a slow way of transferring information like that. You’re in luck however, as the Bold has a USB port and when you bought the Blackberry you should have received a USB cable in the box. Just plug the USB cable into the Bold and your Mac; the Bold will ask you if want to turn on “Mass Storage Mode” and you just answer ‘yes’. Then the memory card, as well as the Bold’s internal memory, will mount on your Mac’s desktop and you can drag your
media files across to where you want to put them. Be aware that the Bold will not play all media formats. Plain MP3 files are okay, but you may have to experiment a bit with video. What I have done in the past is to run the video through VisualHub (discontinued) on iPhone mode, and that video has played well on the Bold while keeping file size relatively low. »٣,٠ تساؤالت حول نظام «آي فون بقلم ممدوح ناس It’s the 8th of June, and I am in the Shufflegazine office with a great crowd of Apple lovers. We are all watching the WWDC and following it passionately; waiting for every morsel Apple gives us of computing greatness. And it dawns on me - all these people came here of their free will. Nobody was there because they had to be, we all wanted to. We all put aside the time and took the effort to watch. This is something that no other computer company can claim to do. You won’t find people doing this to see a Microsoft presentation.

This naturally raises a question: does Apple deserve this devotion? There is no doubt that Apple has the Midas touch. And every thing they make is simply irresistible to many people. I know, not everybody goes gaga over Apple products, after all some people prefer brass and copper to gold. And then the keynote got to talking about the iPhone OS 3.0 and there things got kind of sour for me. Don’t get me wrong, OS 3.0 is great, but I can’t help but think that this is what 1.0 should have been. Many of these features, like MMS and Bluetooth, are extremely basic. So basic, in fact, that you can get these features on a 200 AED phone, not even a smartphone mind you. And still we are drooling over this. Why is MMS, a seven year old technology, such a great thing now? How was Apple able to get away with it for two years?! How was it able to get

30 | iPEOPLE people to buy the iPhone despite its lacking these basic features? I really don’t know. In my case, I never cared for either Bluetooth or MMS. I am also an Apple Geek, and it is an obligation for me to carry an iPhone. In fact, I would be embarrassed to carry anything else. But to be honest it is also the best phone I have ever used. Prior to this I had a Windows Mobile, probably my third or fourth one, and I considered it to be the most capable phone on the market. It had its shortcomings; it was a heavy OS that fumbled and crashed whenever I needed it the most. How it knew when to crash was beyond me. Microsoft must use some amazing prediction technology to do that. The phone didn’t do everything I wanted, but I simply couldn’t live with anything less capable. But then the iPhone arrived and it was elegant, swift, and powerful. However, I would never have bought an iPhone if it weren’t for the jailbreak community and their great applications. Applications that overcame the iPhone’s shortcomings. I needed a way to forward an SMS, and to copy and paste information. For me, these were not options, they were musthaves. But there was a solution, and it wasn’t from Apple. Luckily, iPhone OS 3.0 took care of that for me. But many people didn’t know how to do that, to get this functionality. For them, jailbreaking didn’t exist. So there was no way to forward an SMS, or send an MMS. So why did they buy it anyway? Was it the cool that comes with carrying an Apple product? Was it that they wanted an iPod and this was the next best thing? In OS 1.0, jailbreaking offered more applications because Apple refused to allow 3rd party apps. In 2.0 that was allowed albeit with limitations, so you could find many
applications that might do what you need on the Apple store. In 3.0 it pretty much fixed everything, so much that there is little need to jailbreak now. One might say that 3.0 is an “apology update”, an update that simply fixes what the iPhone was doing wrong all this time. Apple’s way of saying sorry for not giving you what you deserved. At the time of writing this, it’s a week later and I am frantically waiting for the update. And I downloaded it in the middle of the night. It looks great! Apple made the update for the 40 million iPhones/iPod Touches out there and they achieved these numbers in the course of only two years, despite a long list of shortcomings. Which brings me to my last question, if Apple did those numbers with a long list of very essential shortcomings, what will it do now that the iPhone has less than a handful?

Yes, I said it, there it is: I use Windows. Don't get me wrong, I am an Apple guy at heart and I'd take a Mac over a Windows PC any day, but I do use Windows almost every day. In fact, in my backpack I pretty much always carry both a MacBook and an Acer notebook. Contributing to why I do this is so I always have a genuine Windows computer available to me. As I write gadget reviews for
The National I get to try a lot of technology, and not all of it is made for or works with Macs. And the gadgets I write about in the newspaper are not just Applefocused; they have to be for a wider audience. And I could run Windows with Bootcamp on my MacBook, but the simple fact is that not all gadgets that talk to a computer would work with that setup. In some cases having a genuine PC is the only thing that will work.
To me the benefit is not just that I always have a Windows computer available to me, but it's also that I keep a foot in both camps. I believe it makes me better at what I do if I experience both the Mac world as well as the Windows world. Next time you see me, if I am using a Windows notebook, you will at least know why.

اإللكترونية التي قد ال تعمل بالضرورة مع أنظمة «ماك» ،ولكنها ما زالت قيّمة في نظر جمهور الجريدة األوسع .يمكنني بالطبع تشغيل «ويندوز» على حاسبي «ماك بوك» من خالل «بووت كامب ،»Bootcampولكن هذا ال يعتبر ح ً ال في حالة عدم مالئمة األجهزة لمكونات «ماك» الصلبة .وعندها ،يبقى استخدام جهاز يعمل على «ويندوز» بشكل أساسي هو الخيار الوحيد.

احتجت لوقت طويل لكتابة هذا المقال، وليس ذلك بداعي الكسل أو التأجيل كما يحدث أحيانًا ،ولكن ألني لم أعرف ما سأكتب عنه .أعترف أنه بالرغم من عملي كمترجمة في مجلة تقنية ،إال أنني لست خبيرة في التكنولوجيا إطالقًا .وبالنسبة لي ،الحواسب هي ضرورة وليست شغف .أتحدث لغة الحواسب بطالقة ال بأس بها ،وأمتلك حاسبين محمولين ،أحدهما للعمل واآلخر للمنزل .وفي منزلي ،يتجاوز عدد ٌ فكل يمتلك حاسبين الحواسب عددنا، أو أكثر ،محمولة وغير محمولة .وبينما أمتلك «ماك» ،يمتلك اآلخرون «ويندوز»، ولكني لم أشعر قط بالصعوبة في التكيف في عالم «ويندوز» ،ولم أشعر مدعى لالهتمام أو حتى بأن في ذلك ً للفخر .لطالما استخدمت حواسب «ماك» ،منذ كنت في الجامعة ،ألن ذلك كان المطلوب منا .وأفضلها عن غيرها بشكل أساسي بسبب اعتيادي عليها ،ثم بسبب تصميمها األنيق وأدائها المستقر .ولكني ال أستطيع إال أن أشعر بالحسد عندما أرى حاسب أخي بشاشته الضخمة ذات األلوان النابضة وبقوة أدائه ،ثم أعود ألؤكد على نفسي بأنه بامتالكي لـ«ماك» أتفوق على أخي بحاسبه ذو التصميم العادي. لطالما سمعت عن والء محبّي «آبل»، الذي يصل في كثير من األحيان إلى حد التبشير ،ولكني لم أدرك مدى
تعلقهم بهذه العالمة التجارية ،وربما تعلقي بها أيضًا ،حتى بدأت بالعمل في «شفل جازين» وحضور التجمعات واألحداث المتعلقة بعالم «آبل» .وأنا بينهم ،شعرت كما لو كنت مراهقة، ٍّ مغن ما ،أو أتقيد بطريقة مالبس أشجع معينة ،ألتواجد حول من يشبهني ومن ً جامعة كل من يختلف عني يفكر مثلي، وعن مجموعتي تحت اسم «هؤالء» أو «اآلخرون» .وعندما كبرت قلي ً ال ،أخذت أجمع «هؤالء اآلخرين» ،تحت اسم «التيار السائد» ،بنبرة تكاد تكون فوقية. يبدو لي وكأننا نتعلق بفكرة االنتماء فقط لنشعر بأهميتها وبخصوصيتنا. صراعات وفي كثير من األحيان ،نختلق ٍ وتحديات وهمية تكاد ال توجد ،ونبدأ ٍ بالتجمع في مجموعات لنتعلم «التكيف» و « العيش في عالم آخر» و«االستمرارية» و «مواجهة التحديات» و« الحفاظ على هويتنا» .كما لو أننا ال شيء دون هذا الصراع .كما لو أن ما ّ يشكلنا ،وما يبرهن على يع ّرفنا ،وما تنفسنا بل هو الصراع وجودنا ،ليس هو ّ اليومي الذي نواجهه واختالفنا عن «التيار السائد» وعن «األغلبية» التي ال تفهمنا .ويدعوني هذا إلى التساؤل ،إن أقلية أو أخرى، كنا جميعنا ننتمي إلى ٍ أدب يعجبنا ،أو سواء كان ذلك بسبب ٍ موسيقى ،أو أيديولوجيا ،أو حتى نظام ّ تبقى ليشكل تشغيل للحواسب ،فمن األغلبية األخرى؟ كما لو كنا نصارع
لكل منا طاحونته طواحين هوائية، ٍ الهوائية التي قد تختلف عن اآلخرين، لكنها تبقى طاحونتا الهوائية التي تع ّرف فرديتنا وخصوصيتنا وشخصنا، وفي كثير من األحيان ،وجودنا. أليس من األسهل مجاراة الحياة ومجاراة التيار؟ وال أتكلم هنا عن التيار السائد بشكل فكري ،ال أتكلم هنا عن تبني فكر موحد ونظرة موحدة ،بل أتكلم عن التيار بشكل رمزي ،تيار الحياة اليومي. أليس من األسهل اعتبار كل الناس ناسنا وكل العوالم عوالمنا؟ لماذا نخشى أن في ذلك فقدان لشخصنا؟ لماذا ندافع عن هذه الفردية بأظافرنا وأسناننا؟ لماذا يجب أن يكون امتالك فكرٍ آخر صراعًا؟ أو التشبث بشيء دون اآلخر تحديًا؟ ال أعرف أجوبة عن هذه األسئلة ،وأجد أن فيها تكمن طبيعتنا ُ رغبت بمجاراة ما هو اإلنسانية .وربما ،إن علي أن أستسلم إلى هذه طبيعي ،ربما، ّ الصراعات! حلقة في هذه اللحظة ،أجد نفسي في ٍ مفرغة ،وال يبقى لي بعد ٥٠٠كلمة من األفكار المشتتة ،سوى أن أعترف أنه في التواجد بين مجموعة صغيرة تدافع عما ٌ وإنساني، وحميمي دافئ شيء تحب، ٌ ّ ّ في الحيوية ،ألشعر بأنني شيء يبعث ّ هنا لسبب مهم.

شعبية «آبل» في ازدياد مستمر وخاصة في منطقة الخليج
س :كمترجمة لمجلة تقنية، أعاني بعض الصعوبة أحيانًا في ترجمة بعض المصطلحات التقنية إلى العربية ،وخاصة مع عدم وجود مقاييس ثابتة لمثل هذه المصطلحات .وأحيي الجهد الذي بذلته في ترجمة هذه المصطلحات. كيف وجدت تجربة الترجمة هذه؟ وعلى أي أساس قمت بترجمتها؟ هل استعنت بمعاجم لغوية؟ أم هل ركزت على ما هو شائع في المنتديات؟ صراحة لم أقم بترجمة العديد من المصطلحات ،قمت فقط بترجمة المصطلحات التي قامت «آبل» بترجمتها، وهذا في ما يخص المصطلحات التقنية والخدمات ،لكني قمت بتطبيع العديد من الكلمات األخرى للعربية .في بعض األحيان قمت باستخدام الكلمات الدارجة أو البحث في بعض المعاجم اللغوية ومحاول اختيار كلمة تكون سهلة للقارئ ،وأتمنى أني لم أخطئ في اختيار الكلمات.
س :كيف تجد اللغة العربية وتطورها في مواكبة عالم التكنولوجيا والمصطلحات التقنية؟ اللغة العربية ،لغة رائعة جدا ولغة تتطور ،ولكن أتمنى من مجمع اللغة العربية أن ينشط في هذا المجال ،فهو حتى هذه اللحظة خامل جدًا .وإن كنت حقيقة أرى أن العديد من المصطلحات األولى لها تعريبها ،إال في حالة وجود مصطلح عربي معتمد .وردًا على العديد من الذين قد ينتقدون وجهة النظر هذه ،فإن العديد من المصطلحات المتعلقة بالتكنولوجيا هي في األساس
مصطلحات دخيلة على معظم اللغات وستجدون أن العديد من دول العالم تقوم بتطبيع هذه الكلمات في األساس.
س :كيف تجد دعم اللغة العربية في «ماك»؟ هل هناك ما تتمنى أن تفعله «آبل» بهذا الخصوص؟ إن «آبل» اآلن هي في المسار الصحيح لدعم اللغة العربية وأتوقع أننا سنرى العديد من األمور المبهرة قريبًا.
س :لمن توجه هذا الكتاب؟ أنا أستهدف جميع القراء في الكتاب. ستجد ما يفيد الكل بإذن اهلل ،لكني أخص المبتدئين ومتوسطي المستوى في عالم «الماك».
س :هل تفكر بكتابة كتاب آخر يخص «الماك»؟ هل تخطط ألي أعمال مستقبلية؟ لنبقي هذا األمر في طيات المستقبل.
س :كيف وجدت اإلقبال على كتابك؟
اإلقبال متوسط وكنت أتوقع إقبا ً ال أكبر من اإلقبال الحالي .وقد يكون توزيع الكتاب سيئًا ،فالعديد من الناس الذين انتظروا الكتاب في العديد من الدول والمدن لم يتمكنوا بعد من الحصول عليه.

«تعرف إلى الـ »Mac
في هذه األيام ،قليلة هي الكتب العربية التي تتحدث عن عالم التكنولوجيا ،وأقل منها هي الكتب التي تتناول عالم «آبل» وأنظمة «ماك» .مؤخرًا ،وبمحض الصدفة ،وقع كتاب «تعرف إلى الـ »Macبين يدي. يتناول هذا الكتاب طريقة استخدام نظام «ماك» ويستهدف من يرغب بالتعرف على النظام ،وحتى من يرغب بتعميق معرفتهم .وفي حين قد ال يبدو الكتاب احترافيًا من ناحية تنسيق النصوص والصفحات ،لكنه يعوض عن كل هذا بغنى محتواه ،ووضوح لغته. على أثر قراءة هذا الكتاب ،أجريت حوارًا قصيرًا مع الكاتب عن طريق الرسائل اإللكترونية .وكان محمد ملياني شديد الوضوح واالستفاضة ،وعلى ذلك أشكره وفريق شفل جازين .يمكن تتبع مدونة ملياني على ( .)mohamed.milyani.com

«آبل» في المسار الصحيح لدعم اللغة العربية وأتوقع العديد من األمور المبهرة قريبًا.
في الوقت الحالي أنا أشغل منصب مدير التدريب والخدمات بمركز «آي برو »iProللتدريب ،كما أقوم بتدريب العديد من دورات «الماك» وتقديم االستشارات للشركات ومساعدتهم لالنتقال لعالم «ماك» .أما بالنسبة لمدونتي فهي تعتبر من أوائل المدونات العربية وأول مدونة عربية تخصصت في عالم «ماك» الرائع .
س :ما هي أهم النقاط التي ركزت عليها في هذا الكتاب؟ ولماذا؟ في هذا الكتاب لم أصب تركيزي حول موضوع معين ،بل أعطيت كل موضوع حقه .كما حاولت أن أقوم بإيصال المعلومة بأبسط طريقة ممكنة، وحاولت جاهدًا أن أقوم بتغطية كل ما هو في نظام التشغيل دون التطرق للبرامج اإلضافية مثل مجموعة برامج «آي اليف »iLifeمث ً ال.
وكمه وال س :أذهلني غنى المحتوى ّ يسعني إال أن أسأل ،كم من الوقت احتجت إلنجاز هذا الكتاب؟ واألهم من ذلك ،ما الذي ألهمك لتأليفه؟ حقيقة استغرق مني هذا الكتاب أربعة اشهر للكتابة وشهرين للتنسيق ومن ثم شهرين لمراجعته وتعديله .قمت باإلجابة عن هذا السؤال بشكل مطول في أول الكتاب ،وباختصار ،انعدام الكتب العربية ومحاولة مساعدة المستخدم الجديد لالنتقال إلى نظام «ماك» هما أهم عاملين.
س :لماذا قررت طباعة كتاب ،بد ً ال من نشر هذه المعلومات على المدونة؟ مما ال شك فيه أن المدونة ستكون رائعة إليصال المعلومة ،لكن يظل للكتاب متعة في القراءة وسيكون مصير الكتب في القريب العاجل أن تكون إلكترونية.

It seems that on a regular basis I am torn between the awesomeness of the MacBook Pro’s glorious 17-inch screen and my MacBook’s portability. I love the MacBook’s size, and with an SSD drive I don’t have to worry much about it being thrown in a bag and carried everywhere. But, obviously, the screen is relatively small. On the other hand, there are all the pixels on the 17-inch screen which can show multiple windows, applications, widgets, and more. But, and this is a big but, it’s large and heavy and I’d have to buy new bags if I got the 17-inch. Not long ago I was using a 17-inch PowerBook as my main Mac, and did so for almost a year, so I am used to the form factor and what’s good and bad about it. Many things have been improved on the new aluminum Unibody 17-inch MacBook Pro compared
to the large PowerBook of years ago, but the fundamentals are still there; getting a 17-inch MacBook Pro means you get large screen for the price of less portability. Apple even updated the 17-inch model with the announcements at WWDC in June. We tested the pre-WWDC 2.66GHz model with 320GB hard drive and 4GB RAM. As I’m typing this the battery gauge says I have 93% capacity left and that will last me 5:56 hours. That’s more than I’ve ever experienced from any other portable Mac, and it’s impressive. Apple claims that it has up to eight hours of battery life, and although I think you’ll never get quite that much, you’ll stand a chance to get close. The screen on this monster of a notebook is glorious, and will easily take any window, palette, and toolbar you can throw at
it. If you’re editing video or photos, this is a great portable workstation. Personally I find it nice just to have the space to be able to put several windows side by side. Performance has obviously been improved as well, and the new 17-inch model runs faster and cooler than its predecessor. The keyboard, same as on the other aluminum Apple portables, is very nice to type on, and the allglass trackpad might take some getting used to, but is a great improvement over the old style trackpad. The largest and heaviest of Apple’s notebooks is not for everyone, but if you want the largest screen possible, fast performance, and long battery life, the MacBook Pro 17-inch is a good choice.

Speed Like every Apple product, just opening the box for the new MacBook Pro 13-inch is a joy. The box seems to be smaller than previous unibody Mac’s. On the surface there isn’t much difference to the update, and you wonder what makes this Mac deserve the Pro moniker. The difference in specifications isn’t that big, with a 5.4% bump in CPU speed, for example. But in reality this is a very different Mac. You can see how much faster the machine is the moment you turn it on. I would say most of the power comes from the boost in memory rather than anything else. Mac OS X 10.5 Leopard runs very well with just 2GB of RAM for your basic day-to-day use, and throwing in 4GB makes it so much better. The
Mac also seems quieter than the 2.4 as I have yet to hear the fan. Though I doubt that Apple has done anything to the fan. Rather, the machine seems to be holding its own without the need to speed up the CPU and break a sweat. The graphics card seems very capable, and was able to run a few Windows games with VMware Fusion.
Battery This machine has a good boost in battery power. Apple has given this machine the new battery they put in the 17-inch MacBook Pro. They sport more power and a longer life span, albeit at the cost of not being customer replaceable. Documentation claims a sevenhour battery span for this machine,

46 | REVIEWS just like the 17-inch, but in real life I would not expect it to make it that far. In my tests so far, I got about four and a half hours of watching a movie off the hard disk with Wi-Fi on. More basic usage should push that up to five hours at least. Apple claims that these batteries have a life span of about five years. Usually batteries live for about two to three years. So if Apple’s claims are correct, it wouldn’t really matter that you can’t remove the battery, except if you are on the road so much that you require to swap batteries on the go.
Ports The machine has a decent set of ports: Ethernet, FireWire 800, Mini DisplayPort, 2x USB 2.0, SD Card, and Combined audio port. That means that FireWire is back, and its 800 instead of the older 400. For me, that makes a huge difference. Not only does it compensate for Apple’s miserly USB ports, but FireWire in general is a more capable port. The main advantage for me is Disk Target Mode, which is a great asset for anybody that supports Macs. What it does is allow you to boot your Mac as an external hard drive that connects to another Mac via FireWire. The SD slot is a totally new thing to Macs, and I hope it’s here to stay. I’m not sure why Apple has refrained from adding this feature for so long, it’s a great way to shift data around. To make room for this, they shifted the Kensington lock slot to the other side, beside the DVD. As for the audio port, that is really the biggest drawback, in my opinion. No longer do you have separate headphone and microphone ports. Now it is a combined port that takes both. The idea is to use the Apple Stereo Headset with microphone, which is a great function. But now you no longer have the option of using a large amount of audio
accessories already on the market. Of course, it already comes with a built-in microphone that is very good, one that I have never tried to circumvent, but I am sure some people do.
Unibody The MacBook Pro looks and feels like it did before. Aesthetically speaking, the differences lie in the change in the port configuration,

Conclusion The newest member of the MacBook Pro family is hands down the best 13-inch notebook Apple has ever made. But unless you need the better battery life or FireWire it’s not really worth an upgrade from the previous model.
the battery latch that no longer exists, and the new moniker on the screen. As of now, all unibody machines are Pros. And like all unibody machines, the build quality is great. The smoothness of simply opening and closing the screen shows the precision that went into its making. The bottom of the machine looks sleeker than before, now that it no longer has a latch or is split in two. This of course means all MBPs share the new glass multitouch touchpad. I only realized how great this was when I was forced to use my older Macs until the new one arrived, and I found myself constantly swiping back and forth, and nothing happening. Then it dawned on me how Apple was able to push the envelope on something that every computer maker on the market has seen and used for years and never questioned how it can be improved. Another great feature is the backlit keyboard, which is not available on all machines.

The T40W is one of the latest business-oriented inkjet printers from Epson. Perhaps better known for their photo printing prowess, Epson printers also have a lot to offer businesses. Rated by Epson as printing at 5760 DPI and 38 pages per minute, for both black and white and color, the T40W should produce very nice looking documents in sizes up to A4. The T40W is easy to set up; insert the CD into your Mac and start the installer. But when you run the installer from the CD, it actually runs six separate installations of which five ask for an admin password; why not just do it all in one sweep, Epson? In what is almost standard today, the Epson T40W takes multiple cartridges for different colors. There are cartridges for cyan, magenta, yellow, and black. Epson includes one complete set of cartridges with the printer. You can connect the printer directly to your Mac with a USB cable, or to a network using Ethernet cable or Wi-Fi. In an office environment this should be attractive. Although network setup is a bit awkward, and you basically have to connect the printer to the network using Ethernet cable first to be able to configure it for Wi-Fi, I had no hiccups in configuring it; it connected without problems to our Airport Extreme Wi-Fi network with WPA2 security. To test printing speed and quality we printed three test documents. Two were PDFs with very typical content to what you would find in most businesses, one was a TIFF photograph file. All were
printed from an Intel Mac mini running Mac OS X 10.5.7 using Preview. The T40W was connected using Wi-Fi. After the test with the business document and the photo, the ink in the color cartridges was just about gone. Fortunately, I then only had the black and white test to do. Print quality was as would be expected for draft mode and very good in higher quality mode. All color prints seem to have an increased contrast, with darker areas appearing darker and light areas appearing lighter. To sum up, Epson T40W is a good choice for a business printer that should print out high quality documents in black and white or color. That also means it would be suitable for a home office. Although it can also print photos with high quality, Epson has not included things like card reader, display, borderless printing, etc., things we’ve come to expect on photo printers. In other words, we need to keep in mind what the intended use of the printer is, and as a business printer the T40W is a very attractive choice.

تأتي هذه الطابعة كدليل على قدرة «إبسون »Epsonالمشهورة بطابعاتها المتخصصة بالصور ،على تقديم منتجات تالئم متطلبات المكاتب؛ حيث تقوم طابعة «تي فورتي دبليو »T40 W بطباعة ٣٨صفحة في الدقيقة بدقة تصل إلى ٥٧٦٠بيكسل/بوصة لكل من الوثائق الملونة والغير ملونة. تتميز هذه الطابعة بسهولة تنصيبها وإعدادها ،حيث ال يتعدى هذا إدخال قرص التنصيب إلى حاسب «ماك» ومن ثم بدء عملية التنصيب .ولكن ،ما لم أستطع فهمه هو تقسيم «إبسون» لعملية التنصيب إلى ستة مراحل ،بحيث يتم طلب كلمة السر خمس مرات خالل هذه العملية. ً وموافقة لما قد أصبح أحد مقاييس هذه الصناعة ،تحتوي هذه الطابعة على أربع خانات لحافظات حبر باللون األصفر ،األسود، السماوي ،Cyanواألرجواني .Magnetaويمكن وصل الطابعة إلى الحاسب مباشرة من خالل منفذ يو إس بي ،USBكما يمكن وصلها إلى الشبكة إما من خالل منفذ اإليثرنت ،Ehthernetأو من خالل الواي-فاي .Wi-Fiولكن استخدام وصلة الواي –فاي يتطلب وصل الطابعة من خالل اإليثرنت أو ً ال لتعديل اإلعدادات .وبالنسبة لي فقد تمكنت من وصلها إلى شبكة واي-فاي ذات نظام حماية WPA2 من خالل «إيربورت إكستريم »Airport Extremeدون التعرض إلى أي مشاكل.
»Mac OS X 10.5.7وذلك من خالل وصلة واي-فاي. بعد طباعة التقرير الملون والصورة ،الحظنا استهالك الطابعة لمعظم الحبر الملون .ولكن لحسن الحظ ،لم نحتج عندها سوى إلى طباعة النصوص بالحبر األسود .أما بالنسبة لنوعية الطباعة، تقدم هذه الطابعة نتيجة مشابهة للطابعات األخرى في وضعيتها السريعة واالقتصادية ،بينما تتميز عن غيرها في إعدادات عال في درجات اللون. الطابعة األعلى جودة ،حيث تتميز بتباين ٍ باختصار ،تقدم «إبسون» من خالل طابعتها «تي فورتي دبليو» خيارًا جيدًا للمكاتب الصغيرة والمكاتب المنزلية ،بالرغم من عدم احتوائها على المميزات المعتادة والمتوقعة من الطابعات قارئ لبطاقات الذاكرة وإمكانية المتخصصة بطابعات الصور مثل ٍ الطباعة على الصفحة الكاملة.

Being a multi-funtion printer it also scans and acts as a fax machine. It scans at 600x600DPI, which is enough for most business purposes, like letters, but will not be enough if you expect to scan something like photographs, as that requires much higher resolution for good results. The color in the 6128 is divided between four separate cartridges: cyan, magenta, black, and yellow. Each one, according to Xerox PR, is AED465 ($123), making a complete set of cartridges an expensive affair. Each cartridge, according to Xerox, is rated for “up to 2500 pages”. If we believe the rate of 2500 pages and take an average cost for a four color page, it means it cost AED0.80 to print one page. Xerox rates the 6128 as being able to print 12 pages per minute (ppm) in color and 16 ppm in black and white. In our printing test, printing a color PDF from Preview on a Mac Pro connected to the 6128 via USB, it took the printer two minutes to finish the 12 page document. A 12 page black and white file took about one minute and twenty five seconds. About half of that printing time was the actual printing, the rest of the time was the Mac sending the file to the printer. All that is however time the user has to wait for a print to appear. All in all, the Xerox Phaser 6128 is a relatively

For more advanced users, there’s more to explore though. The MWE can also act as a FTP server, you can SSH to it, and more. With Mionet, a pay service similar to what Mobile Me offers, you can connect remotely to your MWE from anywhere on the Internet. Although not quite up to the standards of ease of use set by Apple’s Time Capsule, MWE is a very competitive choice. With iTunes server functionality it will fit in very nicely in your Mac- and Windows- network.
4/5 WD MyBook World Edition 1TB Besides Apple’s Time Capsule, Western Digital’s MyBook World Edition (MWE) might just be the easiest way to add some networked storage to your home network. Networked storage means you can access it over a network (wired or wireless) without having to plug in directly to the storage drive. You simply plug the MWE into your Airport Extreme, or other Ethernet router you have available, and after a few seconds it will appear on your Mac as “MyBookWorld” shared drive. On the drive you will find two folders, Download and Public, and in Public you find Shared Music, Shared Pictures and Shared Videos. Configuration is simple. Open Safari and the list of Bonjour devices (Bookmarks>Show all
Bookmarks>Bonjour) and double click “MyBookWorld”. The first time log in with the default username and password and walk through the wizard. If you want to use it just as a shared drive and manually copy files to it, you can do that as well. But that’s not really using the full potential of the MWE. It can operate as an iTunes server, meaning people around your home can listen to music streaming from it. You just copy your music to the “Shared Music” folder and after a while it will appear in iTunes in the “Shared” section in the sidebar of any Mac on the same network. It even supports music bought from the iTunes store, but of course the Mac you’re playing it with has to be authorized. Time Machine backup does not work out of the

Apple’s Time Capsule is an Airport Extreme Wi-Fi base station with a built in hard drive, with which you can do Time Machine backup of multiple Macs over a network. That network can be wired or wireless but the big benefit– mobility– is of course realized best with wireless networking. With two models to chose from, 500GB and 1TB, there’s plenty of space for most users. With Airport Utility it’s easy to set up the Time Capsule. Once it's set up you configure the Macs that should back up to it with Time Machine. This works the same way as if you had attached an external USB hard drive to the Mac. You can also connect a USB printer to be shared on the network. In a very Apple-ish way it’s easy and transparent to set up and use,
and it just works. One caveat though, as with most wireless networking, is that the speed is less than stellar. If you’re like most users and you have some 50-100GB of data on your Mac, then expect the first backup to take days. After that Time Machine does incremental backups, so it takes less time. The speed of course depends on how you’re network is set up, what devices you have connected, etc. Clearly, you should go for wired networking if you want top speed. In the latest revision, the Time Capsule supports guest networking. Imagine you have friends over for a visit and they want to get online. You don’t want to give them the regular Wi-Fi password. Instead you issue a guest password, which gives them Internet access
but no access to your internal network. If you have a Mobile Me account you can connect to your Time Capsule from anywhere on the Internet with the Remote Disk functionality. The conclusion is that if you already have an Airport Extreme, you’re better off to just buy an external hard drive for it and do Time Machine backup that way, there’s no need to get Time Capsule. If you need Wi-Fi and backup and don’t have an Extreme already, then Time Capsule is a good choice. It provides the easiest to set up and use backup over network available for Mac today.

»٦٠٠ موشن آي إم سماعات «آلتيك النسينغ إن ِ بقلم ماغنوس نستد Although not the most stylish, nor the most feature-packed of iPod speakers, Altec Lansing has again produced a product worth considering for anyone in the market for speakers for their Apple music player. By pressing a button you release the iPod holder on the front and a supporting stand on the back. The universal dock system, with inserts to fit pretty much any iPod with dock connection ever made, makes the im600 very versatile. On the back you find an AUX port, mini-USB for connecting to a Mac and syncing with iTunes (no charging though), composite-video jack for connecting to TV and watching video from compatible iPods, and a remote. One primary characteristic of the im600 speakers is that they run on battery power, making them very portable. Altec Lansing says the im600 should run seven hours on a charge, and in our testing that's about right. We actually surpassed the seven hours on a couple of occasions. Playing music in various situations, the im600 speakers performed admirably, producing rich and clear sound. For portable iPod speakers able to run on battery power, they are a good buy at a decent price. The two minor nags I have are that there is no carry case or pouch included, and there is no option for keeping the display lit up, so you have to touch some controls to make it come on again.

Wacom’s new Intuos 4 tablet comes in four sizes (S, M, L, XL), ranging from 309x208mm up to 623x462mm. Inside the very nice packaging you will find the tablet, pen, USB cable, and CD with drivers. With the drivers you can customize most aspects of the functionality of the tablet, which can be a bit daunting at first, but the more you use it the more you will want to tweak it.
One ingenious aspect of the Intuos 4 is that it can be used by both left or right handed artists. The controls area placed correctly whichever way you turn the tablet, and you can move the USB cable to the left or the right side depending on how you position it. The key to this is that the ExpressKeys, the programmable keys on the side of the tablet, are really small LED displays. In between the ExpressKeys sits the Touch Ring which is used to zoom in and out, change brush size, and more.
Wacom has also done wonders with the pen. They increased the sensitivity to 2048 levels of pressure (Bamboo has 512), which should mean more exact readings of your work. Holding the pen feels comfortable and I managed to use it for a couple of hours without feeling any distress. It feels heavier and more solid than some other tablet pens I’ve used, and overall more like a real pen, I guess you could say. Wacom has made great strides with the Intuos 4, refining and progressing an already successful product line. I have no issues with recommending it to anyone working with graphics, even though the price will be too much for some potential customers. There’s no getting around that Wacom is the dominating name in tablets, and they’ve secured that position with the Intuos 4.

This week I finally stopped downloading obscure 80’s robot Animes long enough to update my iMac’s software. One of these updates was the newest version of Apple’s Safari Web Browser. At first glance, the browser panel is noticeably different. Enough for the user to know that this is a new browser, but not enough for the changes to be annoying. For example, the progress bar has now been shifted from the bottom of the browser to the top, beside the URL input field. I feel that this makes it easier on the user as you are not switching between top and bottom parts of your screen every time a page loads. Another subtle different is the ‘X’ to close a tab is not always visible on the tab, but appears upon hovering over the tab. In terms of functionality, the browser is strides ahead of the competition. I keep four browsers on my iMac, one being the mighty Firefox. Safari’s simplicity is what beats all of the others, including Firefox. In Safari, everything seems to be just one click away. Some of the major differences of the new version are in the look and feel of the browser. Top Sites is a function in the form of a page with small windows much like the Spaces app in Mac OS X. It showcases a full screen preview of the user’s top sites (visited
Although at first Top Sites may seem to be mostly for looks, using it slowly becomes addictive. You will find yourself hitting Command + T for a new Top Sites page to pop open just to see what has changed. This will save time as opposed to opening up every favorite on it’s own. Before this function, I would open up to eight tabs on startup. Not anymore. Everything is in one place waiting for me. It’s like a command center for your browsing experience. Cover Flow, the innovative way that we are used to for looking through content in iTunes and the Finder has finally made its way to Safari. With it your bookmarked sites and your cashed history are represented by a preview page, images and all. This has greatly helped in sorting through my browsing history. For example, I might be looking for a specific
eBay page I visited four days ago, however I had also visited 60 eBay pages since then. The old way of looking through a browser’s history (which is still the current way for most other browsers) is to read through the page names one by one. In this case, that would take forever. With Cover Flow, it takes minutes, as the previews are crisp and precise. The last thing I’d like to mention is the browser’s speed. Safari 4.0 is reliant on the new Nitro Engine for its processing and although it is noticeably faster than the previous version, the claim that it out paces other browsers by up to eight times in some aspects might be a bit of an exaggeration. To conclude, the new Safari is wonderful. It is sharper, easier to use, better to look at, and a bit faster than before. If I can find anything negative to say about the new version is that it makes browsing so fast and fun that it might keep you glued to your Mac for long hours.

There is little change to the box; the only thing I noticed was that “iPhone 3G” now says “iPhone 3GS”. Clearly Apple is downplaying this product for now. The changes made are chiefly internal. It is much faster; Apple says the S stands for speed, and once you turn on the device, you know that Apple wasn’t kidding. On boot up alone, the phone was 24 seconds faster than the 3G. That’s about a 50% faster. It is also capable of much faster and better graphics using OpenGL 2.0 standard. Even though the storage is bumped to 32GB, you will find it very easy to fill it up. Faster processing and better graphics means developers can write apps and games that take up more space, but deliver an enhanced experience to users. A problem is that anything that is made to leverage OpenGL 2.0 can’t work on the huge number of existing iPhone and iPhone 3G. This will split the market into products that will work on different models. Speed is also increased for 3G data as the 3GS now comes with 7.2 HSDPA, essentially doubling
your download speed if you are on a 3G network. Surprisingly, this hasn’t affected the battery life. Apple claims longer battery times with everything you do, except for 3G, which remains the same. My guess is that the battery is actually better, but that increase is lost on the stronger HSDPA, so the two cancel each other out. The 3GS has a threemegapixel camera that is capable of video. Not only that, but it allows you to trim the video so you get what you need exactly. And you can upload that directly to YouTube. Autofocus is welcome introduction. Click anywhere on the picture and it will go out of focus and back in with that area the center focal point. It works well in most situations and can result in better photos. Compass is also a nifty addition, which on the surface seems to offer little to no value; but in reality, what it does is offer developers greater information about where you are. I have never been a fan of voice commands, and this functionality in iPhone 3GS is no exception for me. Though the 3GS does a rather good job
of it. What you do is push and hold the Home button for a bit, until you get the Voice Control application, and then say what you want. It is not constrained to dialing; you can control your music as well. A thing I like is that you can dial numbers directly by saying the number itself. (“dial zero five zero”) The iPhone 3GS has a new “oleophobic” coating, which repels oils. This is a minor improvement, but you will consider this a very welcome addition if you are obsessive towards cleanliness. This does reduce smudges and fingerprints to a noticeable degree. You will still see some smudges, but it’s an improvement over the smudgemagnet 3G. In conclusion, most people that have the 3G will not find this much of an upgrade. By not changing the phone aesthetically it has chosen to downplay the upgrade. The increased speed will mainly benefit gamers more than anyone. So I guess the only reason to upgrade to this is if you need the faster downloads or the increased storage. That said, it is still the best iPhone out there.

حرف Sالذي تمت إضافته إلى اسم الطراز األقدم يعود إلى كلمة سرعة باإلنجليزية ،Speedليبرهن الهاتف على هذا بمجرد تشغيله .وجدت أن مدة تشغيل الهاتف أسرع بـ ٢٤ثانية من سابقه ،أي أنه أسرع بـ٪٥٠ من هاتف «آي فون ثري جي» .كذلك يتميز بغرافيكس ورسوميات أفضل وأسرع وذلك بفضل مقاييس «أوبين جي إل ٢,٠ .»OpenGL 2.0لكن ،وبينما تقدم سرعة المعالجة األكبر للغرافيكس برامج أفضل وأداء ،يأتي ذلك على حساب نوعية ً المساحة ،حيث تحتل هذه البرامج حيزًا أكبر جاعلة من الـ ٣٢غيغا بايت التي يتباهى بها جهاز «آي فون ثري جي إس» أي من «آي تكاد ال تكفي .أيضًا ،لن يتمكن ٌ فون» و «آي فون ثري جي» من تشغيل البرامج المبنية على هذه المقاييس الجديدة التي تبنتها «آبل» في هاتفها الجديد ،لينقسم سوق تطوير برنامج «آي فون» لتلبية حاجات هذه الهواتف المختلفة. وقامت «آبل» أيضًا بتحديث سرعة تحميل البيانات عبر شبكات «ثري جي »3Gفي هاتفها الجديد ،وذلك بسبب تبني هذا الهاتف لمقاييس HSDPAالتي توفر سرعات تحميل تصل إلى الضعف ،وهذا دون استهالك أعلى للبطاريات .أتذكر جيدًا أن «آبل» وعدت بأداء أفضل لبطارية «آي فون ثري جي إس» في جميع العمليات ما عدا تحميل البيانات عبر شبكات ثري جي، ولكن على ما يبدو أن هذا األداء األفضل

Macs and Windows PCs can happily coexist on the same network, that much we know. If you use a Mac and want to use a printer that is connected to a Windows PC via USB somewhere on the network- a pretty common situation- you can do so, at least in most situations. The key is whether there is a Mac OS X compatible printer driver. Mac OS X comes with a lot of printer drivers built-in, and of course many printers come with Mac drivers. You can extend that further with something called Gutenprint (shuffle.to/gutenprint). Gimp-Print 4.2.7, the latest stable version of Gutenprint’s predecessor, “includes 225 drivers supporting over 600 printers”, so there’s plenty of support for printers even if the printer manufacturer themselves don’t supply any Mac OS X drivers. There are many variables in printing over a network, such as network configuration, operating systems involved, etc. For this brief article we will assume that there is a Mac OS X driver for the printer you want to print to, that the printer is connected via USB to a Windows machine, that they’re connected to a TCP/IP local area network, that you know the IP-address of the Windows computer, and that the networking is functioning without issues.

Connect your Mac to a Windows network By Paul Castle | paul@shufflegazine.com There are somethings that no of us want to do, but sometimes have to: take out the trash, get a cavity filled, contact Etisalat support. And sometimes we need to connect to a Windows network. Fortunately, Apple has made that last one comparatively painless. Mac OS X comes with the open source Samba networking software, for connecting to Windows-based networks, and makes it easy to implement in the Mac settings. In the System Preferences, open the Network pane (1). If the location is set to “Automatic” you will need to change to another location setting. You can simply create a new one by clicking on the Location pop-up and selecting “Edit Locations” (2). Click on the “+” button to create a new location and give it a name other than “Untitled” if you like, then click “Done” (3). Select the network connection on the left side of the pane that you are using to connect to the network, probably either “Ethernet” or “Airport” and click on the advanced button near the lower right of the pane (4). Click the “WINS” tab and enter the name of the workgroup to which your are connecting (5). (“WORKGROUP” is the default name, but make sure you have the actual name if that is not correct.) Click “OK”, then “Apply”. In the Finder, click on the “Go” menu and then “Network” to see the other machines visible on the network. (6, 7)
Tip: You can connect to a specific machine on the network by selecting “Connect to server...” from the “Go” menu and entering the windows network address, but connecting can be faster if you have the network IP address instead. type “smb://” and the IP address, then “Connect”. Do you need to share files with those poor Windows users? Go to the Sharing preference pane and check the box to turn on File Sharing. Then click on the “Options...” button and check “Share files and folders using SMB”. Then you must choose the user account(s) that you want to share from and provide the password for those account(s).

Even today, as a photographer, I occasionally have to revert to Windows to run some specialist software that I use when creating HDR images, panoramas and virtual tours. Thankfully I’m not afraid of Windows, having troubleshot many PC’s over the years. And when I moved to the UAE three years ago, I quickly discovered that almost all government and local web sites are designed with only Internet Explorer in mind. But I adapted, discovering quickly that Firefox often worked when Safari failed, as I did when I discovered that Safari didn’t work when I tried to do my online banking with Emirates Bank. But trusty Firefox did work, so it was never any big problem for me. But Emirates Bank’s recent merger with National Bank of Dubai caused the Firefox support to break, so now when I need to make an online transfer, I have to either launch a virtual windows session in Parallels or Virtual PC, or reboot my Mac into Boot Camp. A small inconvenience, I know. But what if I didn’t have a licence for Windows? And actually, a good online banking service is very important for me, and as I’ve been unsatisfied with the standard of customer support with EBI overall, I figured that after three years, and many dozens of telephone calls spent trying to resolve bank errors, it was finally time for me to find a new bank. In order to try to tackle this issue and help others, I recently asked the members of the EmiratesMac. com online forum what their experiences with online banking at other banks in the UAE were like. With their help, I created a list of the major banks and their supported browser and system requirements:

Looking at the chart, I want to make a few comments: None of the banks list Vista as a supported OS. Several UAE banks still support Netscape, even though AOL stopped development in 2007. Today, according to analytics website marketshare.com, Firefox’s current browser share is 22%, Safari is 7%, while Netscape’s share is less than 1%. Most, if not all of the banks, have not updated their list of supported browsers in some time. Both NBD and HSBC still list Firefox 1.0.1 as their only supported version, which means they haven’t updated their list since 2004. I must mention that even though Safari isn’t officially supported by almost all of the banks I checked, some people

reported that it still works, as does Firefox. Special mention must be made of NBAD, which officially supports all SSLenabled browsers, including Safari and Firefox. I know that many banks rely on out-of-the-box solutions to create online banking portals for their customers, which they then have to tie into their own core banking apps, but from by own experience this has lead to non-standards compliant websites. The blame can’t all be placed on the banks however. Of course the reason their web sites are not built to the agreed standards that most modern browsers use is because they are forced to support older versions of Microsoft’s Internet Explorer, which flagrantly disregarded those standards. I do have hope for the future of online banking, however. I have heard that Standard Chartered will start supporting Safari in late 2010, when they upgrade their online banking software.
And Microsoft, having lost over 20% of it’s market share to Firefox, has recognized the benefits of following established international standards in new versions of Explorer. As our local banks are forced to update their software to support these new, standards-compliant versions of Explorer, other browsers, like Safari, Firefox, and Opera, that already follow those standards, will also become supported. NBAD, for example, already supports any SSL-enabled browser. As for which bank I’m going to chose, well, online banking is an important factor, but so is customer service, as well as the interest rates on offer, not to mention the banking fees. I still have a little more research to to, but rest assured that my next bank will support online banking in Safari or Firefox.

Many of us who partitioned our Mac hard drives with Bootcamp to install Windows, face the problem of file transfer between the drives. Since we can only run one operating system at a time, we rely on external hard drives and flash memory disks to transfer files. Luckily, there are solutions that can facilitate this operation right from the Mac and Windows, without the need to use any external devices. One such solution is Mac-drive developed by MediaFour. This utility allows you to access, edit, delete and save to a Mac hard drive directly from Windows. The BRU system consists of three applications: the server application itself, the client agent and the Console application for configuring the server and defining backup jobs. First, one must install the server software on the server machine, then the small client application is required to be installed on each of the Macs or PCs to be backed up. Once this is done, the Console app must be used to set up backup jobs for each computer, which must be turned on and connected to the network at the time so that the server can contact the client and detect what volumes exist to be backed up. The Console application can be used from the server or any other Mac on the network, making it easy to administer from anywhere in the office. The clients must, of course, be online at the time of scheduled backup as well, or the backup will fail. One of the benefits of BRU is that it is able to do its backup activities in a timely manner, without having to hog too much network bandwidth or computer resources. Many of the backups in the CENTIMETERCUBE office are done during work hours, because so many of the units that need to be backed up are laptops that are either put away at night or taken off-site.

So far, no interruption or slowdown has been noticed by users while the backup of the laptop was being performed by the server. And while we have successfully performed several backups at a time this way, they are normally set to happen at different times to avoid possible difficulties. The backup client app for both Mac OS X and Windows naturally needs to be installed with administrator access. Although the display on the Windows client indicates otherwise, a reboot seems to be necessary for the client to function properly. Also, it will be necessary to configure the firewall on a Windows PC to allow access to and from the backup server through the required networking ports. )(Ports 14441-14450 TCP & UDP Backup jobs in BRU are very nicely configurable, allowing for copying of whole volumes or only selected folders, and full as well as incremental backups. Restoring of a backed up file has gone smoothly and as expected in our tests, giving assurance that the system has us covered in case of lost data. Although not as slick or pretty as Time Machine, the BRU interface is quite usable and well laid-out, keeping the main tasks separated with tabs for each. And it provides strong backup tools across a mixed network computers.

If it should happen that power goes out in your home or office your Mac, unless it’s a portable, will instantly shut down, and if you didn’t save what you were working on it can be lost. What’s worse, your Mac’s operating system and possibly some hardware might be damaged by sudden power losses. With UPS, a battery will keep the Mac going for a while- generally minutes rather than hours- so you can shut down the Mac properly. Step 1 Start KeyNote, select a Theme and make the basic layout of your slides. Step 2 On the first slide, draw two small arrows. (Select the arrow tool from the Shapes icon in the toolbar.) Step 3 Select the arrow pointing right. Select the Hyperlink Inspector tab of the Inspector floating panel. Click “Enable as Hyperlink” and select “Next Slide” in the drop down menu. Step 5 Select File > Export. Step 6 Now you can upload the resulting .MOV file to a server. You can look at our resulting file at http:// shuffle.to/keynotepresentation. Note that the more effects and graphics you put in the Keynote presentation the larger the resulting Quicktime movie will be.
More Interactivity In addition to creating arrows for navigating forward and backward, you can easily add buttons that take the user to a specific slide; for example, within a table of contents.

With a Philips screwdriver (looks like an “x”), remove the screw to the memory access door. Then remove the door.
Pull the little plastic tab for the memory module you want to remove. You may have to free the tab with your nails if it’s the first time the memory has been accessed. Then remove the memory module.

Insert the new memory module gently into the grooves in the memory space, once you face resistance just push it in a little bit and you should hear a “click” once it’s fully inserted. Take care to orient the memory correctly by watching the little notch in the memory module.

Adobe Photoshop is incredibly advanced and complex software, and often we don’t need all its functionality to accomplish something. Often you probably just want to quickly select a file, crop it a bit, upload it, and be done with it. That’s where ImageWell comes in perfectly (http://xtralean.com/ IWOverview.html). I’ve used it for a long time to upload pictures for posts on www.emiratesmac. com. It doesn’t do a lot of things, but what it does do, it does very quickly and easily. For many simple picture editing and uploading tasks it’s actually a much faster solution than Photoshop. ImageWell is free to try and costs $19.95 if you want to keep using it. This tutorial assumes that you have downloaded and started ImageWell.

Step 2 If you have several locations set up to which you can publish, click the drop-down menu and select which location you want to send this particular picture to. Step 3 Do some editing to the picture, for example crop it. When you’re finished, click the small ImageWell icon button at the top left of the editing window. الخطورة الثالثة
