Editorial Photography is one of the things I like to do the most in my spare time. Taking photos challenges me, frustrates me, encourages me, and so much more. When it comes to designing things, whether it’s a magazine cover, a house, a photograph or whatever, I usually have an image in my mind. The challenge is to bring that image out in the design I’m working on. The frustration is that it’s often very hard to translate the image in my mind to a real world design. The encouragement comes from once in a while being able to make a successful translation. When that successful translation happens, when the image in my mind is conveyed into the real world design, then I feel I’ve accomplished something special. I readily admit that is not something that happens very often but I work hard at it every day. Another thing I really like about photography is that there’s always something new to learn. It doesn’t really matter much if I would happen to learn all about my camera, because that’s only a small part of taking great photos. Although we are, in this issue, focusing more on some of the technology-related aspects of photography I hope we can also give you some inspiration for going out and taking more photographs of our beautiful surroundings. Yes it’s getting hot out there but that shouldn’t stop us from exploring and taking photographs. And if you take some good photos make sure you share them with us on our Facebook Fan Page (shuffle.to/facebook), on EmiratesMac.com, or elsewhere.

iPhone 3.0 software arrives with full Arabic support
دعم كامل للعربية في اإلصدار الثالث ”لنظام تشغيل “آي فون At WWDC in San Francisco, June 8, Apple’s senior vice president of Worldwide Product Marketing, Phil Schiller, took to the stage and announced a line of new and updated products. Among them was the anticipated version 3.0 of the iPhone software. In general iPhone news, Schiller said that one million iPhone SDK (Software Development Kits) have been downloaded, 50000 apps are available on the App Store, 40 million iPhones and iPod touches have been sold, and one billion apps downloaded. That’s a phenomenal success by any measure. The new version of the iPhone software is available as a free download from Apple and we’ve taken it for a spin. iPhone 3GS expected in Middle East in August
In addition to the 3.0 iPhone software, Apple at WWDC announced the release of a new iPhone called the 3GS. On the outside you can’t tell much difference between the current iPhone 3G and the new 3GS, but there is plenty that is new on the inside. Apple claims the new iPhone is up to twice as fast as the current model, rendering web pages and launching apps faster. Web sites have reported the new iPhone has a 600MHz processor, 256MB RAM, and fast graphics chip. Even though it’s faster it’s also supposed to have better battery life with up to nine hours of Internet usage on one charge, according to Apple. The new iPhone has a threemegapixel camera with autofocus, which should enable higher quality photographs. Users will be able to tap on the screen on the area where they want the iPhone 3G S to focus on. Also new is that the camera can record video of VGA quality (640×480) at 30 fps. Obviously the new iPhone comes with all that is new in the iPhone 3.0 software, like copy/paste, MMS, full Arabic support, etc. It also has a digital compass, VoiceOver functionality with which users can give commands by speaking to the iPhone, and more. The pricing in the US, with a two-year contract, is $199 (16GB), and $299 (32GB). Pricing in the Middle East was not known at the time of going to press. The iPhone 3GS was available in the US on June 19. Etisalat in the UAE has confirmed that iPhone 3GS will be introduced in the country in August.

revamps notebook lineup One surprising part of Apple’s WWDC announcements was that they revamped their entire line of notebooks. Apple has made their notebooks faster with more features and lower prices. Of the MacBook Pros, the 15-inch model received the most attention. The new model features an integrated battery a la the 17-inch model, which can, according to Apple, run the Mac for up to seven hours on one charge. That’s a 40% improvement over the previous model. Apple has removed the ExpressCard slot and replaced it with a SD card slot. The updated 15-inch model also has a new screen that shows more intense colors. It comes in versions of up to 3.06GHz, up to 8GB RAM, up
to 500GB hard drive or 256GB SSD. Prices start at $1699 for the 2.53GHz model. Apple also updated the 17-inch model with a 2.8GHz configuration, with up to 3.06GHz processor, 8GB RAM. As opposed to the 15-inch, the 17-inch retains the ExpressCard slot. It starts at $2499. The MacBook Air was also slightly revised; you can now get it in a 1.86GHz version for $1499 or a 2.13GHz model, starting at $1499. For those who want the SSD option in the MacBook Air they will be pleased to know that Apple effectively lowered the price with $700 for the 128GB SSD model. MacBook Air also gets the new display and SD card slot. In another move that surprised, Apple made the 13-
inch MacBook Pro Aluminum a member of the MacBook Pro family, leaving the white MacBook as the sole member of the MacBook family. The new arrival in the MacBook Pro pack gets the same new display as the 15-inch model, SD card slot, better battery life, FireWire 800 port, and backlit keyboard is now standard. The MacBook Pro 13-inch starts at $1199 for the 2.26GHz model up to $1499 for the 2.53GHz model. All Apple notebooks are EPEAT Gold and Energy Star v5 standards compliant, making them in Apple’s words ‚”the world’s greenest” line of notebooks. At the time of going to press, pricing and availability in the Middle East was not known.

Snow Leopard
coming in September
Bertrand Serlet, Apple’s Senior Vice President of Software Engineering, took to the stage at WWDC to talk about Snow Leopard, the upcoming 10.6 version of the Mac OS X operating system. Serlet claimed that Snow Leopard refines more than 90% of Mac OS X 10.5 Leopard, and it basically retains the UI (User Interface), at least when it comes to the Finder, but that the code base behind the scenes has been drastically rewritten. Much of that improvement in speed can arguably be traced to Snow Leopard being 64-bit with applications and utilities being
rewritten to take advantage as well. Apple revealed that the upcoming version of their operating system installs 45% faster than Leopard, and users will get about 6GB space back once they upgrade. Expose is now built in to the Dock, showing an app’s content when you hold down the mouse button on its Dock icon. Users can, just from the Dock, “drill down” into folders, making navigation and access to files easier and faster. Mail has been radically refreshed, and performs about twice as fast as the current version in opening, searching, and moving messages. Apple also announced
that Exchange support is built-in to Mail, iCal, and Address Book in Snow Leopard, making life easier for corporate Mac users. Snow Leopard also brings a new QuickTime version. QuickTime X includes simple video editing based on a timeline, easy sharing to online video sharing sites such as YouTube, as well as support for streaming of media from web servers. Snow Leopard will be available in September for $29, and all major Apple Mac software will be 64bit Snow Leopard compatible. The Snow Leopard family pack will be $49. Middle East prices are not yet known.

The Urban Dictionary defines a tweetup as “an organized or imprompt gathering of people that use Twitter”. In Shufflegazine’s case it was an organized gathering of Twitter users that took place on first of June in CENTIMETERCUBE’s office in Deira, Dubai. Around 30 Twitter fans came out to the event, enjoyed refreshments, prizes, a goodie-bag, and great company. The Tweetup was sponsored by Gadgitech, GOODRAM, Microsoft, The National, and Trio Time. Sharaf DG opens first store in Sharjah, UAE
اآلن في الشارقة..”“شرف دي جي Sharaf DG, the leading electronics retailer in the UAE, has opened a new store in Safeer Mall, Sharjah. The new store follows the model of Sharaf’s existing stores with a wide range of electronics on offer, from TVs, gaming consoles, computers and accessories, digital cameras, mobile phones, and more. Sharaf DG’s Managing Director Yasser Sharaf said about the opening‚ ”We’re excited about opening this new store and it’s good to see all the people here today. and manufacturers keep pushing the envelope, so to speak. What they tend to do, which is understandable, is to cram more and more features into the same or smaller bodies. This makes simple and straightforward selling points when going to market with the new products, but it doesn’t necessarily mean better products for customers.

If these fundamentals are there then I look for other things like RAW capability, spot metering system, video capability, and more. Of course it’s also important that the camera works with my Mac, but that’s rarely a problem with cameras today.
When I look at buying a camera I don’t start with the features, I look for some fundamentals, fundamentals that are largely the same today as they were say 10 years ago. First, the lens has to be able to produce sharp photos with good contrast and color. Second, the camera should support full manual controls so I can adjust settings to my liking if I have to, and not always rely on what the computer in the camera tells
These things are important and they’re easy to overlook for potential camera buyers. Walk into a store and you see posters and stickers for megapixel this, zoom that, etc. I guess I’m trying to tell you that you shouldn’t get caught up in the marketing-spiel of camera companies. Decide on what’s important to you and try to find what best fits that in functionality and budget. Then you’ll walk away a much happier camera owner.

The articles in Shufflegazine are great; I find a lot of helpful information about using my Mac and iPhone, and apps and accessories to go with them, but since it is an “Apple lifestyle magazine,” how about more of the “lifestyle” part of that? Perhaps some recommendations on cool music or videos. Better yet, articles on bands using technology, especially bands that use Macs. And Macs are used a lot for making movies and videos, so there aught to be some potential articles there as well. Thanks! -MM You’re right, MM, we need more of that sort of articles. We hope we can bring you that in future issues. -Editor
I really like the magazine, but it seems strange to me to have a print magazine that talks about so many electronic devices and technologies. And Shufflegazine and its people seem to be very involved with new media and social networking, with the website, blogs, Facebook and Twitter accounts. So why have a printed magazine as well as all of the electronic content and online interaction? But even with all that, I still enjoy having the magazine, looking through it and reading the articles, so maybe I’ve answered my own question! -ER That might seem strange, ER, but the fact is that we’re published in a region still very much appreciative of paper publications. We do a lot online
and that will only increase. Some day we may not publish on paper anymore, but that day, we think, is still far away. -Editor
Arabic on its own I think you’ve made a good attempt with putting Arabic and English side by side like you do, but it doesn’t work for me. I want to see Arabic on its own and English on its own, it’s too confusing like you have it. I like the articles but it’s not easy to read. -BI Thanks for the feedback, BI. Q: I love iTunes and my iPod but I also keep a list of MP3 files on a flash drive, which I use to copy to my car stereo system. It doesn’t support iTunes so I wonder if there’s another MP3 player I can use with my Mac to just play those MP3s without importing them to iTunes? A: You can do this with several application. The best way is to use something like Cog (cogx.org) or SongBird (getsongbird.com). Cog is simply a player application and you can create playlists. SongBird is more of a replacement for iTunes with advanced functionality. Both are free to download and use. You can also play MP3 files with VLC (www.videolan.org/vlc) and even QuickTime Player. Q: I bought the iPhone 3G before it came out by Etislat. What is the best (and most reasonable) way to get connected with 3G Etisalat to use the iPhone for business? Can you tell me, if my iPhone is locked? My SN is 858432FGY7K but I don’t know its origin and was not able to look it up on apple.com. Can I upgrade the newest software? I still run 2.1. A: That’s a lot of questions, let’s see if we can answer at least some of them. The way to get connected with Etisalat is to get an Etisalat SIM card (post or prepaid) with data activated on it. That’s it. About your iPhone, check this page on Apple (support.apple.com/kb/HT1937) for
info whether it’s locked or not. You need the part number, not serial. If it’s unlocked you can upgrade, if it’s locked you can not. Q: I cannot update Safari with Software Update I get this answer: “The update ‘Safari’ can’t be saved. You do not have appropriate access privileges. The Installer package has been moved to the Trash. To try again, open the package from the Finder.” I used Disc Utility to repair permissions – of which there was none. Any help please. A: Occasionally you may get an error when trying to install the actual updates. To solve this problem, just go to your /Library/Updates directory and delete the folder for Safari. Then try to download and install the update again. This fix seems to work for many Mac Users. Credit to Shufflegazine reader Brian Nielsen for this answer. Q: I am a new Mac user and I thought about connecting it to some good speakers. I purchased a set of Creative A500 5.1 speakers and I came to find that there are three jacks that need to be connected to the computer, and on my Mac there is only one port for connecting headphones. My question is there any solution to this dilemma, or do Macs not support 5.1 speakers from Creative?
A: Most Mac computers have a 5.1 compatible audio out port, usually called a mini-optical port. Unfortunately you can’t just connect the A500 to your Mac and even after consulting Creative in Dubai I can’t seem to find a direct solution. You might be able to connect by using mini-optical to TOSLINK adapter and then go from TOSLINK to the A500. A better solution is probably Griffin’s FireWave (shuffle.to/ firewave). You should be able to plug all three cables from the A500 into the FireWave, which in turn connects to your Mac with FireWire. Provided that your Mac has FireWire this seems like a straightforward solution. The FireWave is discontinued but you should be able to find one. Q: Although I generally do not need to write Arabic, it comes in handy sometimes. I do not have Arabic keys on my keyboard, does anyone know if there’s any Virtual Keyboard software for Mac that writes in Arabic? A: It’s actually built in to Mac OS X. First, go to “International” in “System Preferences”, click on the “Input menu” tab, and select “Show input menu in menu bar”. Then click on the checkbox next to “Arabic”, and “Keyboard Viewer”. Now you will find “Keyboard Viewer” and “Arabic” as options in the input menu. (The flag icon in the menu bar.) Select “Keyboard Viewer” and make sure Arabic is set as input language and you should see a small window with an Arabic keyboard.

Confessions of an
amateur photographer by Magnus | magnus@shufflegazine.com Let’s face it: in one way or another we’re all photographers. The arrival of high quality cameras built in to our mobile phones, cheaper and better digital still cameras, and editing software on our Macs means we can do more with very simple gear than a professional photographer could do, let’s say 20 years ago. When I started with photography I shot black and white with a completely manually camera- it even worked without any battery- and developed the film myself. I even did enlargements in my parent’s basement. There was something magical about that process, seeing how the final picture slowly appeared on a piece of paper soaking in a bath of chemicals. Part of that magic is not there anymore, but so much else has been added. That I now can take hundreds of shots without worrying about the cost of film and paper, and seeing them instantly on the screen of my Mac is another type of magic. Being able to upload them to web sites so family and friends can see them is also magical, in a way. To some purists, photography will never be the same with digital technology, but I say that photography, as with everything else, will always evolve. It has to change just as we change. And if you’re a Mac user you’re very well set to take full advantage of what technology has to offer. With iPhoto you can manage and edit your photos, and your Mac can connect to peripherals like scanners and printers with ease. I might not smell the chemicals anymore when I work with my photos, but I’m as passionate as ever about photography and that’s what will keep me taking more photos. Sure, the process is important, but it’s the end result that really matters, don’t you think?

بقلم ماغنوس نستد عندما بدأت بالتصوير ،استخدمت كاميرا يدوية بدون بطاريات حتى ،مع أفالم باألبيض واألسود؛ واستخدمت قبو المنزل والدي كغرفة تظهير لتكبير وطباعة لدى ّ الصور .وبالرغم من مرور وقت طويل على ذلك ،ما زلت أتذكر ذلك الشعور الذي كان يغمرني كلما بدأت إحدى صوري بالظهور تدريجيًا كالسحر على الورقة المنقوعة في محلول التظهير الكيماوي .لم تعد هذه اللحظات موجودة في أيامنا هذه، لكن كل التطور الذي حققته تكنولوجيا التصوير عوّ ض بشكل كبير عن هذا الفقدان .أصبح باإلمكان اآلن التقاط المئات من الصور دون التفكير بكلفة األفالم أو الورق ،ومشاركتها مع عائالتنا وأصدقائنا على حواسب “ماك” خالل لحظات معدودة بعد التقاطها ،وأعتقد أن في هذا أيضًا

وفهمها والتدرب على التعبير بها. وكالكاتب الذي يكتب بلغة يتقنها ،ما ينتج عن المصور المحترف هو تعبير أكثر دقة لمشاعره المنعكسة في الصورة، سواء كانت صورة لشجرة أو لضحكة أو لرقصة ،لتعبر لنا هذه اللقطة الواحدة، هذه اللحظة الواحدة التي ال تتعدى الجزء من الثانية ،كل ما شعر به المصوّ ر، ً وكل ما ّ مختزلة فكر به ،وكل ما تعلمه، ما قد يقوله الكاتب في جملة أو في ألف كلمة.

الرسم ،الكتابة ،النحت ،والتصوير ،تسعى كل هذه الفنون الختزال ما نشعر به في فترةٍ قد تمتد إلى سنين في حال الكاتب والفنان ،وقد تدوم للحظات فقط في حال المصور ،لتعكس طبيعتنا اإلنسانية وسعينا األبدي لتخليد وجودنا. قد يصر البعض أن التصوير هو مجرد لواقع موضوعي ،وأن الصورة تسجيل ٍ ما هي سوى انعكاس لمشهد معين على الفيلم أو المجس اإللكتروني داخل الكاميرا .ما ينساه هؤالء هو أن العينين اللتين تقرران ماهية التفصيل الذي ستلتقطه العدسة هما عينان بأعوام من األفكار إنسانيتان مثقلتان ٍ واالعتقادات ،وأن قرار الضغط على زر االلتقاط في لحظة ما دون األخرى ،هو أيضًا قرار إنساني .وهذان القراران يلغيان أي موضوعية بحتة قد تحملها تلك الصورة .ال يمكن للمصور عزل مشاعره عن الصورة ،فهي لحظة ملونة برؤيته، وبعواطفه ،وباعتقاداته وبإيديولوجيته لتحمل جزءًا من روح المصور سواء كان هاويًا أو محترفًا وبغض النظر عن جماليتها أو معناها.

Apple’s iMac desktop all-in-one computers are beautiful creations, that earlier this year received a significant bump in speed. In short, the new models have faster processors, newer and faster graphics card, and a minor bump in RAM specifications as well. Taken all together, the changes make the iMac the fastest all-inone desktop Apple has ever made. On the outside the iMac has changed very little. Apple took out the only FireWire 400 port and put in one additional FireWire 800 port instead. For users of FireWire 400 devices this will cause some pain as they will have to buy an adapter to keep using their
devices. Another change is that for connecting to external monitor or projector, Apple now provides a Mini DisplayPort output port on the rear of the iMac. You can get the new iMacs with 2.66GHz, 2.93GHz, or 3.06GHz Core 2 Duo processors. As before, the iMac has two slots for RAM. The standard amount of RAM is 2GB or 4GB depending on model, expandable to 8GB. In terms of storage, the hard drive capacity ranges from 320GB up to 1TB, in addition to the SuperDrive. The 20-inch iMac has a 1680×1050 pixel display, and the 24-inch model has 1920×1200
pixel display. Although the 20inch would be perfectly fine for most users it’s hard to resist the massive glory of the 24-inch model and we’d recommend paying extra for it. In terms of graphics there are a number of options, ranging from NVIDIA GeForce 9400M, NVIDIA GeForce GT 120 or 130, to ATI Radeon HD 4850. This should satisfy even demanding gamers and makes the iMac a good all-around entertainment center. It’s hard to find much to complain about with the latest revision iMac. Apple has continued the tradition of producing a fast machine in a beautiful case. As

Creative Aurvana X-Fi NoiseCanceling Headphones by Magnus | magnus@shufflegazine.com These headphones are noisecanceling, meaning they reduce the noise you hear from your surroundings so you can hear what you’re supposed to listen to more clearly. Imagine yourself in an airplane, for example. Headphones such as these reduce the noise from the plane so you can enjoy the movie or the music you’re listening to. I put the Creative headphones to the test, comparing them with my Bose QuietComfort 2 headphones. To be honest, I could not distinguish any dramatic difference between the two, but the Creative ones have a slight edge I think. They suppressed a bit more of the noise in the higher end and produced a slightly richer sound. The Aurvana headphones fit my ears very well, and even after a few hours of use they still were not bothering me. Concerning the sound, they produce as rich and nuanced sound as any other headphones I’ve tried. In addition to noise-canceling, the Aurvana also supports X-Fi Crystalizer, a technology meant to “smooth” out the audio in MP3 files so it sounds more like the original, and X-Fi CMSS-3D, something used mostly in movies and games, giving you a better sense of a 3D or surround sound. I found that the X-Fi Crystalizer technology worked well on some older MP3 files, which I know are pretty heavily compressed.

“When I was your age we didn’t have these fancy drawing tablets for our computers!” Well, they existed, but were expensive and only graphics pros could justify the cost of one. As with many tech item graphics tablets have become more accessible to everyone. So as a graphics amateur I decided to try out an inexpensive tablet, and I’ve been very pleased with the performance as well as the price.

In the constant leap-frogging between camera manufacturers, mainly Canon and Nikon, with new models with new features, Canon might have the upper hand (for a while) with the 500D Digital SLR (DSLR). Following on the tremendous success of the 450D model, the 500D is likely to set a mark in the competitive DSLR market. Canon has upped the megapixels to 15.1, allowing for exposures of 4752×3168 pixels. You can take up to 3.4 frames per second, which is respectable for an entry-level DSLR. The 500D has a 9-point autofocus system and in my experience it’s very fast and accurate. Rarely did it miss the mark, so to speak. Only in macro mode did it sometimes miss to get right focus. In terms of exposures the 500D also excels, taking care of challenging situations with apparent ease. Responsible for much of this, no doubt, is the new DIGIC 4 processor, same as in the 5D Mark II. It did seem to have a
tendency to under expose with about a quarter of an f-stop but that might just be our particular test unit. You can view your photos on the 3.0-inch LCD display, and borrowing from other Canon models, the 500D has a Live View mode, where you can see what you’re photographing on the display. The LCD display comes in especially handy when you shoot video. Arguably the main news with the 500D is that it records full (1080) HD video. The video quality is amazing but you can’t really use autofocus while you shoot video, which seems a bit limiting. At 30fps the 500D records 1280×720 and you get the full 1920×1080 at 20fps. All these things, combined with Canon’s Mac software, make the 500D an excellent purchase for beginners and advanced photographers alike. If you want one DSLR that can take great photos and HD video, the 500D is definitely worth checking out.

The Eye-Fi is, quite simply, an SD card that also serves as a Wi-Fi card. With it in your camera, all photos you take can be automatically transmitted to your Mac via Wi-Fi. You first connect it to your Mac with a card reader and configure it for your Wi-Fi network. Then when you insert it into a digital camera new photos will be sent to your Mac. Photos can also be automatically uploaded to various web sites, a service you pay extra for. One downside is that Eye-Fi requires a Wi-Fi access point, like an Airport Extreme. It does not work with Wi-Fi set up by a Mac, often called ad-hoc Wi-Fi network. This means you’re limited as to where you can use it. When testing the Eye-Fi I experienced problems with the camera not always sending photos to my Mac. The same problem happened when I tried it with different cameras. The Eye-Fi is a fantastic idea, I think. It’s easy to set up and very easy to use. Even though I experienced some problems with the use of my Eye-Fi, I recommend it to anyone who doesn’t like cables and tends to shoot their photos in an environment where there is Wi-Fi.

I must admit that I’m a relative newcomer to the Lensbaby craze. People either love Lensbaby it seems, or they just don’t get it. Although I’m not quite sure into which camp I fall yet, I am
excited about the possibilities with Lensbaby’s Optic Kit. Unfortunately we don’t have room to explain the characteristics of Lensbaby’s lenses, so we leave that for another time, instead concentrating on the Optic Kit. The kit contains three lenses: Plastic optic, Single glass optic, and Pinhole/Zone plate optic. Each one fits into the three current lenses on offer by Lensbaby, and are easily swapped with a tool that comes with each optic. You can buy the set together, or each optic individually. If you love the look of pictures taken with simple, plastic cameras, you’ll love the Plastic optic. It shows a lot of chromatic aberation, photography speak for different colors not being in the same focus, giving the photo a slightly “floating” look. The Single Glass Optic is similar to the very simple optics found in antique cameras. It gives an effect you’ll recognize from old photos, a dreamy, soft characteristic. Finally, the Pinhole/Zone Plate will give you the hazy effect of your childhood’s simple pinhole cameras. At f/177 the depth of field is almost endless. Although a Lensbaby lens and the Optic Kit are not cheap, they will revive your photography and make you see things in new ways. If only for that, they’re worth the price.

In the jungle of compact digital cameras available today, it’s hard to find something that stands out. Canon’s SX200 stands out in several ways, including an impressive zoom range, 28336mm equivalent in 35mm (f3.45.3). This means you can capture things far away with ease and without using digital zoom. The zoom range is presumably behind why the lens is pretty big and why the camera body as a whole is rather large too. In terms of controls, the SX200 follows the typical model. A dial on the top for selecting mode, like Movie, Aperture or Shutter priority, and “Smart Auto” mode. The “Smart Auto” mode basically decides on its own which scene modes it should use. So it should know which mode to use out in the desert, which mode to use at night,
which mode to use to take a portrait, etc. Although you can shoot with SX200 in complete manual mode where you select both aperture and shutter speed, there is no histogram function. For more advanced photographers this arguably seems like a strange thing to leave out. If you care about histograms you might also care about RAW, which the SX200 does not support. That’s not surprising however in this type of camera. Up to ISO 400 the SX200 produces low levels of noise that will be acceptable for most photographers. From ISO 800 and up (maximum 1600), the noise becomes noticeable, but for this class of camera it handles increasing ISO well. Increasing levels of noise
basically means the photo will look “grainy” and “fussy”. Following the trend in digital still cameras, the SX200 can record HD video (1280×720, 30fps) with mono sound. You can’t however use the zoom while recording video, which seems a bit strange. The SX200 is a good camera, but one thing makes me reduce the mark from what could have been five out of five. Whoever thought that the camera should always pop up the flash when it is turned on should be fired from the design team. It’s just a very bad decision and I see no merit in it what so ever. If you’re not bothered by the flash, you’ll find the SX200 takes good pictures and has an impressive set of options, including zoom range, HD video recording, and more.

Not being a serious graphics professional, when I do want to edit some pictures, it can be frustrating. Not because I don’t know what I want to do, or that I find the task itself difficult, but simply that many of the major graphics programs have a fairly steep learning curve, unless you have the time to dedicate to figuring them out. iPhoto is useful for many common tasks, but sometimes I need more features than it offers. A great midpoint exist, however, in an open source app called Seashore.

Seashore offers some advanced photo editing features, without overwhelming you, and being open source, it’s free as well. There a few negatives. Seashore lacks a full compliment of keyboard shortcuts for many tasks, requiring some extra clicking compared to some other apps, for instance cropping a selection; once you’ve selected an area, you have to click on the crop button in the Options palette. Not a big problem, but some may miss having a keystroke. File format support is somewhat limited. Seashore reads and writes JPG, JPG2000, PNG and TIFF, but has read-only BMP, GIF, PDF, PICT and XBM. SVG support is available through a java plugin. It supports the GIMP’s XCF file format, although not fully, ignoring some details and destroying others, so if you use it on XCF files, keep a backup copy to avoid losing some file information. Despite these minor drawbacks, Seashore is an extremely useful and worthwhile image application, and especially so considering the price tag. Another great example of the usefulness of open source software.

Joby is well known for their small snake-like tripods that can wrap around almost anything, making them a versatile compliment to traditional tripods. Now Joby has released a small ball head, especially made for their tripods. It fits any tripod with the standard 1/4-inch screw mount, but is really made for Joby’s larger GorillaPods, the SLR-ZOOM and Focus. Once you’ve screwed the ball head onto the tripod, you just attach a camera to the quick release plate, slide the plate into place on the ball head, and you’re done. With a quick turn on the locking knob and you can adjust the position of the camera; another quick turn and you lock it in place. The one small complaint I have is that the camera attaches with a screw to the quick-release plate. A one-dirham coin works just fine as a screwdriver, but it would be better if you could just use your fingers. Joby’s Professional Ball Head supports up to 3kg of camera equipment, which means it’s an excellent choice for most photographers, even though Joby uses the label “professional” a bit loosely.

Stores are flooded with digital cameras of all types, ranging from simple cameras, designed to capture a sweet memory with the click of a button, all the way to more advanced versions, designed to satisfy the expressive need through a memorable photograph. With that, however, prices do vary from the affordable and reasonable to the downright exorbitant. Choosing a camera wisely can be a challenge, and an art in its own right. And it’s not just the camera you have to choose; there are memory cards, batteries, bags, tripods and more. To help out, we’ve collected some questions, tips and information that we hope can guide you towards making a good choice.

What Do You Intend to ?Use the Camera For Your first question doesn’t have to do with megapixels or budget; it is simply what are you going to use the camera for? Your answer might decide what type of cameras you should be looking at. Consider what type of photography attracts you. For example, are you intrigued by the landscape that surrounds you, perhaps taking shots of the beautiful desert scenery? Then a camera with a really wide angle lens is important. Or do you like to zoom in and look at minute details, in which case you want a good macro lens. Taking photographs of situations in low light is always tricky, but Image Stabilization can help. Maybe you’re attracted by people, their faces, features and expressions? If that’s the case you want to look at a camera with a good telephoto lens. Also, for people photography, Face Detection will also be helpful. Also, think about the conditions under which you will be taking most of your pictures. If you will be on the move a lot, then smaller and lighter is better. Are you more likely to use the camera without moving it around much, perhaps even indoors? In that situation, the size doesn’t matter much, and you can focus on other features instead. If you want to capture fast action, like sports, consider the shutter lag. That’s the time between when you press the shutter button and the photo is actually recorded by the camera.

What is your budget? Once you’ve established what kind of photography you’re likely to do it’s time to consider your budget. First, make an inventory of any equipment you already have; you might have lenses, filters, or other accessories already that you could reuse with a new camera. Be prepared to pay from 1000 to 2000 Dirhams for a compact point and shoot, while a Digital Single Lens Reflex (DSLR) camera will start from about 4000 with a basic zoom lens. There are also many cameras in the range between, so it should be possible to find something that fits your need as well as your budget.

Bright colors can spice up photos
DSLR or Compact? DSLR cameras, cameras on which you can switch the lens, are typically seen as a good choice for more advanced photographers who like to experiment. The truth is that most DSLRs can be used on fully automatic mode if you like. However, it is true that a DSLR camera will grant you more freedom and a higher capability to take the picture of your dreams.
That said, it is also heavier, bigger, more expensive and harder to maintain and clean. It also asks more of its user, compared to the light and small compact camera with its point and shoot option. The main benefit of a DSLR, besides better photo quality, is that you can exchange the lens; as you get more advanced you can buy more and better lenses, which you obviously can’t do with a point and shoot camera. A DSLR also accepts more accessories, like external flash, compared to compacts.

The Megapixel Count We’re sure you know that’s what the resolution of a digital camera is called; how much detail it’s capable of capturing in one exposure, measured in pixels. Basically the higher the number of megapixels, the greater the detail the camera can capture. With increasing megapixel count each exposure becomes larger in terms of space it takes up on a memory card, and it can take longer for the camera to process. Even though manufactures would like you to think more megapixels
is always better, that’s not really true. If you intend to use your digital photographs mainly on the screen or on the web, even two or three megapixels is enough resolution. Apple’s iPhone 3G is two megapixels and it’s capable of producing very nice photos. If you’re interested in printing your photos, then the megapixel number matters more. In the table you can see what print size you can expect to get out of different megapixel counts when printing at a typical 300 DPI (Dots Per Inch).

70 | FEATURE Video Yes, we’re talking about still photography, but most digital still cameras can record video today. They can even record at HD (High Definition) quality, often rivaling dedicated camcorders. However, you should view any video-recording capability of a digital still camera as a nice bonus. If you are really serious about video you should consider a dedicated camcorder.
Try Before You Buy Before heading to the cash counter, make sure you get a good feel for the camera. Try the camera out, carry it, handle it, check the settings and see if it suits you. Cameras are not built alike so what suits one person might not suit others. See how it feels to hold, how heavy or light you think it is, how you control

RAW or Not Many cameras, even point and shoot models, can shoot in RAW format. It means that the camera saves the image it captures straight to the memory card without any processing. For you it means you can do more post-processing in the computer without losing any quality in the photograph. If you want the ultimate in picture quality and flexibility, then RAW will be important for you; if you just want fast and simple photography, then RAW is not necessary.
Memory Cards With the substantial progress made in memory card technology, more options are made available to us, such as higher capacities and faster transfer speeds. Since each digital camera only accepts one particular memory card format, this is an important consideration when selecting a camera. Remember The Batteries! by Paul | paul@shufflegazine.com There are several things you’ll want to be sure you have with you for your picture taking during the Summer holidays, but after the camera itself, of course, the batteries are the most important item you’ll need. One of the biggest hazards in photography is suddenly find your camera has shutdown with a depleted battery, right when you find that perfect, memorable shot. So not only should you make sure the batteries are fully charged before going out, but it’s best to carry some back-up batteries with you as well. And whether you’re using standard AA/AAA batteries or a special camera battery it’s a good idea to have a separate battery charger as well.

And Don’t Forget the Accessories Most of the time, the camera’s price doesn’t include must-have accessories, such as a carry bag, memory cards and card readers, additional batteries, filters, lenses, external flash, tripod, reflectors and more. The bag should be big enough to hold all your equipment, and protective enough to keep all your things safe. A tripod will be good to have if you are going to take landscape photos or photos in low light situations, like at night. Most cameras today have a builtin flash, but it’s not very powerful so an external flash might be useful, especially if you have a DSLR. (Most compact digital cameras don’t accept external flash.) If you’re going to shoot in a studio environment, items like reflectors, light boxes and more will be helpful.

Printers Of course we have to briefly mention printers as you might want to print your photographs. You need to consider mainly five things when selecting a printer. First, what size of prints are you likely to make? If you are happy to print small size, something like 10×15cm, there are printers specially made to print this size. They are cheaper and more mobile than the other printers. If you need to print A4, A3 or even bigger there are printers for that too. Second, does the printer have a display and card reader? Many photo printers have a card reader into which you can put your memory card, see your photos on a small display, and print
without a computer. Third, does it have separate ink cartridges for different colors? For photo printing this is critical as it saves on ink cost. With separate ink cartridges for different colors you only swap out the cartridges that run out of color. Fourth, what is the availability of supplies? That ink is readily available is important and you can find ink for the major printer manufacturers like Canon, Epson, and HP. Before buying make sure you know you can get ink in the future. Fifth, how Mac compatible is the printer? If you’re likely to print from your Mac you need to know if there are drivers and Mac software for the printer.

Find my iPhone
There are several minor changes in the iPod app, but these are my two favorites. I can now listen to podcasts at up to 2x speed. It sounds a bit weird, but it lets me quickly go through a lot of audio. Also, I’ve noticed you can now scrub through a song. It’s like before when you could move to any point in a song or podcast just by dragging the little blue dot, but now you can hear the audio as you move it.

Notes Notes now syncs between Mail.app and the Notes app on iPhone. This is very welcome to many, I’m sure, me included, as I now actually see a good use for the Notes app.

iPod touch
MMS didn’t work right away after I had updated my iPhone, but after enabling MMS on my mobile account and trying a few things suggested on EmiratesMac. com, it worked just fine. In the new Messages app there is a little camera button with which you can attach a new or existing photo. Also, when you’ve taken a photo and tap to send it, there’s now an MMS option.
For iPod touch the situation is slightly different, as you have to pay $10 for the update. That update is now also available in the Middle East iTunes stores.

Other features There are more new features in iPhone 3.0, many that we’ve not been able to try yet. Among them we find P2P (peer to peer) support so that two iPhone users can play a game against each other over Bluetooth, Push notifications, and hardware accessory support through the iPhone dock connection. As applications and hardware keeps developing we’ll explore much of this in the near future.

Garmin is a one of the better-known brands, so we thought we’d take a look at what software is available for your Mac and your GPS device.
BaseCamp (Free; shuffle.to/basecamp): BaseCamp seems to be the offroad focused sibling to RoadTrip (shuffle.to/roadtrip). With BaseCamp, users can browse topography maps, tracklogs, waypoints, and plan trips for their Garmin devices.
MapInstall and MapManager (Free; shuffle.to/mapinstall): These are basic in functionality, but very important. As you purchase maps from Garmin for different parts of the world, including the Middle East, you transfer them to your Garmin GPS device with these applications.

Web Updater (Free; shuffle.to/ webupdater): Helps with keeping the software on your Garmin GPS device up to date.
RouteBuddy (Free; www. routebuddy.com): Similar to BaseCamp and Google Earth, RouteBuddy lets you scroll around on maps, find routes, and interact with your GPS device. The application is really free, but it’s only useful with maps and they cost.

iPhoto ‘09: Faces and Places, even Smarter by Paul Castle | paul@shufflegazine Summer is here, and with it your opportunity to do more with your holiday photos by taking advantage of the great new features in iPhoto ‘09. One of the best things about the new Faces and Places features is that they make the creation of Smart Albums even more useful. First, be sure you’ve gone through you pictures and assigned names to the faces, added the faces that iPhoto may have missed, and trained it further by confirming or or rejecting it’s guesses on the Faces cork board. If you have a camera that includes GPS information in the pictures then Places is ready to go. But since many of us don’t have a GPS enabled camera yet, and have old pictures that will not have the information, it’s likely
that you’ll have to take a little time to go through your pictures and add this as well. It’s worth the time to at least geo-tag your most important photos. Click on a photo, or group of photos and then Get Info. (Command-I) Click on “photo place” and type in the name and iPhoto will give a list of locations to choose from. You can also click on “Find on map” if the place isn’t listed or if you want to add a specific location. Once you’ve got your pic tagged with Faces and Places, have a little more fun making special photo sets. It’s easiest to start with the Places map, and doubleclick on it until it’s centered on a favorite place or area. Click on the Smart Album button and it will ad a new album with the name of that
general area on it. Right click on the new Smart Album and select “Edit Smart Album”. Now you can change the name of the album to whatever you like, and add more criteria: change the popup so the dialog says “Match all of the following conditions”, and then click on the plus button on the right side to add a new line; click on the popup labeled “Album” and change it to “Faces”, then add the name of someone tagged in the photos. Using this method you can make a montage of the days you and your friends have gone to the Beach, or all the times you and your sweetheart have visited your favorite restaurant. Great for sharing online, or printing up for a special photo album.
