‫كلمة العدد‬ ‫بقلم عمران العويس‬

To me, the benefit of blogging, twittering, facebooking, and all the rest of it has come slowly. Friends around me kept saying “you should blog”, “you should twitter”, etc. and for the longest time I didn’t understand why, or what the benefit of it would be for me personally as well as professionally.

But now I get it!

Now it’s the case that I tell my friends that they should be more active online. It’s not that I write that much in a blog, but I post to my tumblr site quite frequently (alowais.me) and I also contribute to Shufflegazine and CENTIMETERCUBE blogs. I’m very much a visual person, so to me I have to see pictures and color, and that’s what I get from the tumblr site. Facebook is also becoming an increasingly important tool for me to keep up with friends, as well as business contacts.

What I didn’t really understand for the longest time was how to interact with others online, like through a blog.

It struck me as curios that someone would take a lot of time to write blog posts so that perhaps others would read them. Or why a company would post stories and photos of what they’re working on. Now we’re right in there with Tumblr, Facebook, Twitter, and more, for most of us individually as well as company accounts. And no longer do I feel like we have to hide what we do, like the office and what we do are something we shouldn’t show off to the world. We work hard and produce good thing so why wouldn’t we share that? Changing my thinking about these issues was what took me the most time, and when finally the coin dropped, so to speak, it was like a new world of opportunity opened up.

For me, it’s been interesting to follow my own progression – conceptually as well as practically – and I hope I can inspire, perhaps even teach, others to take up their mouse and keyboard and start publishing and interacting online.

”٩٠٠ ‫يقدم “أرينا كي إم‬ ‫شاشة قابلة للمس بواجهة‬ ‫مستخدم بتصميم ثالثي‬ .‫األبعاد‬ Axiom and LG launched the Arena KM900 mobile phone from LG today, at a press event in the Axiom store in Dubai Mall. The KM900, or Arena, has only a touch-screen (480×800 pixels) and no physical keyboard. In features it’s well equipped: 5 megapixel camera with autofocus and video recording, 3G data, Wi-Fi, Micro SD slot for memory expansion (up to 32GB), FM radio, and more. It has a “3D interface”, which appears like a cube you spin around by flicking your finger across the screen and each side of the cube reveals a particular set of functions, like multimedia, contacts, etc. The suggested retail price for the KM900 is AED2399. The second annual Design Day (D-Day) in Dubai took place on April 25-26 at Knowledge Village. Focused on Adobe software and creative professionals, the event included sessions on Photoshop, Illustrator, Indesign, calligraphy, printing, and more. The presenters for D-Day spanned the globe, with Hassan Marji from Lebanon, Lee Varis and Marwan Aridi from USA, and Mohammed Jogie, South Africa, among others. Jogie, Adobe’s Design Evangelist MEA, said about the event, “D-Day has definitely become part of the staple diet of creatives in the Middle East. We’re encouraged by the continued support by partners and creatives. Mohammed Al-Owais, driving in the CENTIMETERCUBE-sponsored LAP57 racing team, won the UAE Touring Car Championship’s Class 4 at the season’s last race on April 24 at the Dubai Autodrome. Mohammed’s brother, Omran Al-Owais, owner of CENTIMETERCUBE and Editor-in-chief of Shufflegazine, also took part in the championship but due to mechanical problems, he did not succeed in taking a place on the podium. Shufflegazine is working with the LAP57 team to investigate how various Apple technologies could be used to bring the excitement of the races to a wider audience, possibly on the Internet. Panasonic unveiled new digital cameras and camcorders ‫“باناسونيك” تزيح الستار عن كاميرات رقمية جديدة‬

At the cricket match between Pakistan and Australia at the brand new Dubai Cricket Stadium, Panasonic announced a line of new digital still cameras and camcorders to be released later this summer. The two main themes in Panosonic’s announcement were full HDvideo recording with AVCHD technology, and face recognition functionality directly in the cameras. Among the cameras announced by Panasonic were the 10.1 megapixel Lumix DMC-FS7 and the 8.1 megapixel DMC-FS6, both with Leica lens with 4x optical zoom. The Lumix DMC-FT1, which was also announced, is a shockproof, waterproof, as well as dustproof, which should make it a good camera for desert trips. Among the camcorders announced were the HD models HDC-HS300 and

HDC-TM300. These new models feature a newly developed 3MOS chip system and incorporates the company’s first camcorder touch-screen. Hitesh Ojha, Product Manager, AV Categories for Panasonic Marketing Middle East FZE, said about the unveiling, “We’re confident that the consumers out there will be happy with these cameras in terms of features, and because we have different cameras for different requirements”.

It turns out‬‬ ‫‪that with Tim Cook, COO of Apple, as a stand-in‬‬ ‫‪for Jobs, the company has done very well. During‬‬ ‫‪the quarter they had revenues of $8.16bn, giving a‬‬ ‫‪profit of $1.21bn on a gross margin of 36.4 percent.‬‬ ‫‪International sales accounted for 46 percent of‬‬ ‫‪revenue. No specific figures were available for the‬‬ ‫‪Middle East, from Apple Inc. or Arab Business‬‬ ‫‪Machines (ABM). During the quarter, Apple sold‬‬ ‫‪2.22mn Macs, 11.01mn iPods, and 3.79mn iPhones.‬‬

‫‪Canon Middle East has launched their latest Digital‬‬ ‫‪Single Reflex Camera (DSLR), 500D, with full,‬‬ ‫‪1080, HD video recording capability. With a HDMI‬‬ ‫‪connection you can play back the video directly‬‬ ‫‪to a HD TV. As a still camera, the 500D has a 15.1‬‬ ‫‪megapixel sensor, supports up to ISO3200, and 3.4‬‬ ‫‪frames per second continuous shooting. A 3-inch LCD‬‬ ‫‪display on the back of the camera shows settings,‬‬ ‫‪controls, and also a live view of what you’re taking‬‬ ‫‪photos or video of. Apple reaches one billion iPhone app downloads by Mohammed Abu Ajamieh ‫عدد تنزيالت البرامج لـ”آي فون” يكسر حاجز المليار‬ In April, Apple passed one billion apps and games downloaded from the iTunes App Store for iPhone and iPod touch. This means that in about nine months they reached a volume of downloads – free apps as well as purchased ones – that few could have anticipated when the App Store opened in July 2008. For developers this means that on average every app was downloaded about 25000 times. This should show potential developers, many of them in the Middle East, the opportunities available in iPhone app development.

For Apple it also arguably means more Mac users as iPhone development requires a Mac. Developing apps for iPhone so far requires Xcode (Apple’s software development environment) and iPhone SDK (Software Development Kit). The software used to develop iPhone apps in Xcode is Apple’s own ObjectiveC, the same language used by many to develop software for Mac OS X. It’s very likely that the success of iPhone apps will bring new users and developers to the Mac platform, which is good news for all Apple fans.

The iPhone, once thought to be a failure product by some, is now clearly a huge success story.

With Etisalat and Mobily being the latest to bring iPhone to the Middle East, and Apple’s success with the App Store, it should mean that more developers in the Middle East start developing iPhone apps and games.

My apple world

by Magnus | magnus@shufflegazine.com Over the years my apple world has grown geographically smaller, but socially larger. And this is, of course, due to the Internet and technologies such as RSS, podcasting, and more. Let me explain.

Many years ago- when Macs were running System 6 or 7, when USB didn’t exist, when the Internet was someone’s experiment in a university laboratory, and when iPhone was a sci-fi fantasy in a yet to be published novel by Arthur C. Clarke- Apple users were very isolated. Along came the Internet and eventually something called blogging, which made it possible for me to widen my apple world.

And I think you would have had to live through this change to fully understand how big it really was. At university I was creating

Apple fan web sites by writing it all in HTML code, and eventually I started getting in touch with others around the world. But keeping a web site up to date was tough, as I had to type code and upload files every time I made a change. Blogging and the technologies behind it have changed all that.

It is now possible for interested readers to follow updates to my site without having to visit it all the time. And I can follow their sites in a much easier way. Today I keep up with what people write about Apple from all over the world, and they can follow me if they so chose. Technology made the world a smaller place geographically. At the same time, technology made the world a larger place socially, as we can now keep in touch with more people.

Proud Owner of MacBook Pro

My parents recently presented me with a MacBook Pro for my thirteenth birthday. The three part tutorial on virtualization and running Windows on Mac with VirtualBox provided me with a comprehensive, detailed and all encompassing account on how to install VirtualBox and Windows XP. Now, not only am I a proud owner of a MacBook Pro but also I have also installed the software myself! Wow! New Mac User

Just a week ago I bought my first Mac. I walked into an iStyle store and got a MacBook. It’s so beautiful, fast, and I love how the software works. Of course it also looks very cool. I got interested in Macs through a friend who told me to go chech out EmiratesMac. com. From there I heard of Shufflegazine and got a copy of it. Now I’m hooked. I’ve read a few issues of Shufflegazine. I work with IT support at a big company in Bahrain, and although I’m the biggest Mac fan, I don’t see much in Shufflegazine for me.

by Magnus | magnus@shufflegazine.com Q: Do you know, if I ever do subscribe to iPhone through Etisalat, will I still have access to my existing iPhone Apps, which I purchased through my US iTunes account, and will it work on an Etisalat-issued iPhone? I currently have an official Apple unlocked 3G iPhone with an Apple iTunes US based account, which my friend in USA can recharge credit into.

A: You can have apps, music, etc. bought with different iTunes account on the same Mac, in the same iTunes library. I personally have items I’ve bought with my US account and apps bought with my UAE account on the same Mac and iPhone.

Q: I found this great blogging site called tumblr.com, but it seems I have to log in to the site to post something. I don’t want to do that. It’s going to take too long. How can I post to my tumblr.com blog with Mac or iPhone?

A: Tumblr.com is great! We love it here at Shufflegazine and use it too. (shufflegazine.tumblr.com) In fact, the Tumblr folks have posted a pretty exhaustive list of third party apps that support their service. (www. tumblr.com/docs/apps) We really like the Tumblr app for iPhone and iPod touch. (shuffle.to/tumblrapp) If you want something really quick and simple for your Mac, try Tumblenote, a Dashboard Widget. (tumblenote. tumblr.com) Or try MarsEdit. (www. red-sweater.com/marsedit) MarsEdit is a full-featured blog editing and

publishing application, which you can use for almost any other blogging services besides Tumblr.

Q: In our office we have an old, black and white copy machine that apparently can also work as a laser printer. It has an Ethernet port; we’ve plugged it into our network, given it an IP address, and Windows computers can print to it, but I have found no drivers for Mac. Can you help? It’s a Gestetner DSM615.

A: You’re lucky, because there is a solution. You have to download three files and install them: Ghostscript, Foomatic, and plxmono. They are all available from shuffle.to/linuxprint.

Install them and then you can add a printer (System Preferences > Print & Fax). Click on “IP Printer” and make sure you’re adding a “Line Printer Daemon – LPD” printer, enter the IP address of your Gestetner printer.

Q: I live in Abu Dhabi and I went to the Etisalat shop to get one of those 3.5G modems that you connect by USB to your computer. I have a MacBook, and they didn’t really know if the modem would work with Mac. Do you know if it does?

A: As far as I know, Etisalat sells two of these modems: the E170 and the E220. They should both work fine with Mac and Mac OS X. I use an E170 with my MacBook and it works fine, and Paul uses the E220 and it works fine for him.

‫مدمن على التدوين‬ I started blogging seriously in 2004. That was when I registered intodimensions.com and started blogging there. I had written and published text before that in various ways, even before the internet was widespread, but this was when I picked up what was then the latest fad, blogging.

Blogging was an exciting new activity. There was something thrilling about being able to write and publish blog posts with the possibility that others would read it. Even though I’ve blogged ever since then on different web sites, it’s hard to relive that initial curiosity I had back then. But for me, blogging has changed and evolved into something else. Now I get to do it as a part of my job, posting to Shufflegazine.com as well as CENTIMETERCUBE. com. Also, with the arrival of Twitter, it’s hard to keep doing everything. (Follow us at twitter. com/shufflegazine!) Someone asked me if I was blogging less now that I am also on Twitter and I said “yes”. I do blog less, at least personally, since I started using Twitter. That’s not to say Twitter has replaced blogging, it hasn’t, but it is a complement. And it is true that much that I would have previously put on a blog, I now post to Twitter instead. I think it’s up to each and every one of us to find the balance between using Twitter, blogging, Facebook, and all the other things we can spend time on.

‫بدأت بالتدوين بشكل احترافي‬ ‫منذ العام ‪ .٢٠٠٤‬عندها قمت‬ ‫باالشتراك في موقع “إنتودايمنشنز”‬ ‫(‪ )intodimensions.com‬ونشرت‬ ‫أولى كتاباتي هناك‪ .‬لم تكن تلك‬ ‫أول مرة أكتب فيها‪ ،‬حيث قمت‬ ‫بنشر عدة مقاالت ونصوص من خالل‬ ‫قنوات أخرى‪ ،‬قبل أن يصبح اإلنترنت‬ ‫واسع االنتشار مثل اآلن‪ .‬لكن مع‬ ‫“إنتودايمنشنز” بدأ إدماني على ما‬ ‫كان يعتبر آخر الصيحات التقنية‬ ‫حينها‪ ،‬وهو إنشاء المدونات والتدوين‬ ‫‪.Blogging‬‬ ‫في البداية‪ ،‬وجدت الكتابة والنشر‬ ‫عبر المدونات‪ ،‬ثم تتبع اآلخرين لها‬ ‫لقراءتها والتعليق عليها أمرًا مليئًا‬ ‫بالترقب واإلثارة‪ .‬لكن اآلن‪ ،‬أصبح من‬ ‫الصعب جدًا استعادة لحظات اإلثارة‬ ‫األولى تلك‪ ،‬بالرغم من إقدامي‬ ‫على نشر كتاباتي على مواقع أخرى‬ ‫جديدة‪ .‬واليوم‪ ،‬تغيرت تجربة التدوين‬ ‫بالنسبة لي لتأخذ شك ً‬ ‫ال آخر‪ ،‬فقد‬ ‫أصبحت جزءًا من عملي حيث أنشر‬ ‫كتاباتي حاليًا على موقع “شفل‬ ‫جازين” (‪ )shufflegazine.com‬وموقع‬ ‫“سنتيمتركيوب” (‪centimetercube.‬‬ ‫‪ )com‬أيضًا‪.‬‬

‫إما اآلن مع وصول “تويتر ‪”Twitter‬‬ ‫بشكل أقل على‬ ‫أصبحت أنشر كتاباتي‬ ‫ٍ‬ ‫المدونات الكالسيكية‪ ،‬وأكثر على‬ ‫موقع “تويتر” ذي المدونات شديدة‬ ‫االختصار‪ .‬وال أعني بذلك أن “تويتر”‬ ‫قد حل محل المدونات بشكل كامل‪،‬‬ ‫مكمل‬ ‫بل على العكس‪ ،‬أراه كعنصر‬ ‫ّ‬ ‫لعالم التدوين‪ ،‬فما كنت أكتبه‬ ‫سابقًا على مواقع المدونات أقوم‬ ‫بكتابته ونشره اآلن على “تويتر”‪ .‬وفي‬ ‫نهاية األمر‪ ،‬على كل واحد منا إيجاد‬ ‫التوازن المثالي بين وسائل التواصل‬ ‫المختلفة‪ ،‬مثل التدوين و“تويتر”‬ ‫و“فيس بوك”‪.‬‬ ‫وسواء كنت تعتقد بأن لديك ما‬ ‫يستحق أن يقال‪ ،‬أو حتى إن اعتقدت‬ ‫أن ما لديك ال يستحق أن يقال‪،‬‬ ‫عليك بدخول عالم المدونات والبدء‬ ‫بالتدوين‪ ،‬فهي طريقة ممتعة‬ ‫للتواصل مع اآلخرين ومشاركتهم‬ ‫أفكارك‪ .‬وال تنس أن ترسل لنا عنوان‬ ‫مدونتك حال أن تبدأ‪ ،‬لنكون أول‬ ‫قارئيك‪.‬‬

‫يعتقد الكثيرون أن الترجمة‬ ‫أمر سهل ال يتعدى كونها نق ً‬ ‫ال‬ ‫للكلمات من لغة إلى لغة‪ .‬لكن‬ ‫ما ال يدركونه أن اللغة تعبر في‬ ‫مضمونها عن بنية اجتماعية‬ ‫وثقافية ال تنتقل تلقائيًا بمجرد‬ ‫تغيير الحروف والكلمات‪ .‬لذا يتوجب‬ ‫على المترجم فهم تاريخ اللغة‬ ‫وعمقها االجتماعي وثقافة المكان‬ ‫الذي جاءت منه قبل أن يحاول‬ ‫تطبيق ما يعرفه عن قواعدها‬ ‫واختالف تركيباتها اللغوية ‪.‬‬ ‫تكمن أساسيات الترجمة في كيفية‬ ‫تغيير تركيبة الجملة لتالئم البناء‬ ‫اللغوي للغة المنقولة إليها‪ .‬لكن‬ ‫في كثير من األحيان يتعين على‬ ‫المترجم أن يرتدي قبعة الكاتب‬ ‫بإعادته لصياغة جمل كاملة لتالئم‬ ‫ثقافة هذه اللغة لكي ال يخسر النص‬ ‫األصلي مضمونه التعبيري سواء كان‬ ‫جادًا أو ساخرًا‪.‬‬ ‫غالبًا ما نستفيض في وصف إبداع‬ ‫الكاتب ونغفل تمامًا عن إبداع‬

With the latest revision of their flagship desktop computer, the Mac Pro, Apple has clearly focused on internal changes. The Mac Pro still uses the same case as the previous models. On the outside the only difference is the ports. The FireWire 400 ports (one on the back and one of the front) have been replaced by FireWire 800 ports (two on the back, two on the front). As before, the same five USB 2.0 ports are there (two on the front, three on the back). You’ll also notice the Mini DisplayPort connection on the Nvidia GeForce GT 120 graphics card (with 512MB video RAM).

The new Mac Pro comes in an eight-core configuration with two 2.26GHz, 2.66GHz, or 2.93GHz Quad-Core Intel Xeon 5500 series processors. 36 | REVIEWS maximum). You can still put up to four internal 3.5inch hard drives in the Mac Pro, and they are installed in a similar type of cable-free, sliding-tray design.

There is however more room around the drives to get to them, which is welcome. Finally, the Mac Pro case houses four PCI Express 2.0 slots; the first one is taken up by the default Nvidia graphics card. Like with the other parts, Apple has done a good job of making even the PCI cards easier to get to.

Performance

How is it in terms of performance? We tested the quad-core 2.66GHz model (with Nvidia GeForce GT120 graphics card and 3GB RAM) and put it against a one-year old 2 x quad-core 2.8GHz Mac Pro (with Nvidia GeForce 8800GT graphics card and 4GB RAM). In all tests the new Mac Pro was ahead of the one-year old model, which could be expected.

What’s really interesting though is that the old model had two quad-core processors running at a higher clock speed compared to the new model, which had a single quad-core processor. Keep that in mind when you see the numbers and you might envision what an eight-core version of the latest Mac Pro can do in terms of performance. In all tests the 2009 model beats the 2008 one, except the XBench “Threads” test, which is presumably where the higher number of cores in the older model kicks in.

Conclusion

With this latest model of their flagship Mac Pro model, Apple has focused on the inside, making it faster, more configurable, and easier to service than ever before. Although not amazingly faster than theprevious models, it is still respectable bump in speed and comes with a very good graphics card, standard. If you have a Mac Pro you’re happy with, there’s little reason to update.

If you’ve been holding on to your Power Mac, this is a good time to jump to an Intel Mac Pro. Also, if you need the fastest Mac available, this is it.

After the Tweetie Twitter client for iPhone and iPod touch became such a hit, it was clear that a Mac version would garner a lot of interest. Which Twitter client to use is a highly personal choice and even Tweetie, as good as it is, will not suit everyone.

over API calls (if you don’t know what that means you won’t miss it). But all in all, Tweetie is a powerful entry to the Mac Twitter market. With a great interface, advanced functionality, and being a true Mac app, it’s sure to make its mark and be the number one choice for many tweeters.

Some other Twitter clients (e.g.

Tweetdeck, Twhirl, Seesmic Desktop) are built with Adobe Air. Air is a cross-platform solution for developing and running applications. To many users, Air is unfortunately known for being memory-hungry and prone to crashing. By comparison, Tweetie feels very fast and smooth and works and looks like a real Mac OS X application.

The interface simplifies the potentially complicated task of using Twitter. It separates your tweet feeds based on their type: main timeline, mentions, and direct messages. You can set up several Twitter accounts and they are nicely separated with the account’s avatar as the symbol. Most of the things you expect in a Twitter client are there, and then some. You can control Tweetie almost completely by using just the keyboard, which should appeal to hardcore users.

Uploading pictures and shortening URLs is done completely inline (in the post) in a very cool way.

One restriction is that the interface only comes in a one-column view.

(As opposed to Tweetdeck, for example.) There are no pause/ resume or refresh options, and the new tweet button is placed in an awkward position. Something that will annoy some users is that there is no support for placing tweeters in groups, a function power users will miss a lot. Power users will also miss that there is no control

The case has two parts: an inner soft plastic cover and the outer hard plastic exoskeleton shell, giving it that striped or “rib cage” look. As well as providing cushioning, the soft cover protrudes through the spaces of the shell giving some grip to the case although not a lot. The shell gives great protection against the hard knocks that a well used iPod can encounter. The case also comes with screen protector films, making this an all-around great choice for keeping your iPod scratch-free.

The case fits VERY snugly over the device; you won’t be switching it with other cases quickly and easily. Make sure to get the molded cover in place just right to make sure it doesn’t interfere with the function of the power and volume buttons. It took us a couple of tries to get this right.

The AP1200 from xPal is a 1200mAh external battery pack for iPhone 3G. The manufacturer claims it will give you 255 hours extra standby time, 6 hours extra talk time, and 4 hours extra internet (data) time. With our testing on a totally drained iPhone 3G (drained enough to have shut itself down), the AP1200 took about one hour to charge the iPhone to just under half capacity, at which point the AP1200 was completely out of power. The iPhone slides into the AP1200 and the iPhone thinks it’s connected to a power source. You charge the AP1200 by connecting it to your Mac with a USB cable. Press a button on the AP1200 and it will light up and show you the status of the charge. One complaint I have is that the AP1200 doesn’t hold the iPhone as securely as I would like it to. I have this feeling that it might slip out at any moment.

Altec Lansing Moondance Home iPod speakers

by Magnus | magnus@shufflegazine.com On the one hand, there’s really nothing much special or unique with the Moondance Home iPod speakers. On the other, there’s not much to fault it for either. It’s a good iPod speaker, without any particularly new or exciting features. The sound is good. It comes through strong, clear, and even with a good, “thumping” bass. Using the included inserts, all recent iPods can be placed in the dock, which also charges the iPod. If you don’t want music from the iPod, you can also listen to the built-in FM radio. A large and bright displays tells you what’s going on, and it dims in low light so it won’t be annoying at night.

The remote is one of the better ones I’ve tried, with clear buttons and simple to use. One thing that annoys me is that the iPod, when placed in the dock, has no support. I can easily see how you’d accidentally knock it over, thereby potentially damaging the iPod. But besides that detail, the Moondance Home is a goodsounding iPod speaker with solid features, albeit at a high price.

I had a problem: I wanted to mount my two 23-inch Cinema Displays on some kind of contraption that would keep them right next to each other, but off the desk at the same time. With the Cinema Displays standing directly on the desk they were way too low for me. That’s where the Neo-Flex came in.

In terms of construction, Ergotron sure hasn’t held back on the materials in the Neo-Flex. It’s made out of thick metal and other high-quality parts. You must assemble the Neo-Flex yourself, but if you’ve done any IKEA assembly you will easily manage it. To mount the Cinema Displays I had to buy Apple’s VESA Adapter Kit, which added a bit to the total price but it was worth it.

One really cool thing about the Neo-Flex is that it rotates very easily. The large foot has built-in wheels, so even with large, heavy displays mounted, a light touch turns the whole setup from side to side. Once put together, the Neo-Flex will save space on your desk and hold your two monitors securely in place in a more ergonomic position.

You could use it with a 17-inch MacBook Pro as well, but then the Mac is a just a bit wider than the Cooling Bar itself. On one side the Cooling Bar has a notch in which you can thread the cord to the charger. With a 17inch Mac on top that notch will be covered by the Mac. This is a very clever idea. The only thing I don’t like is how easily my MacBook moves around when placed on the Cooling Bar. The bar sits very firmly on a table but the rubber ridges on it need to be larger and have better grip. But all in all, it’s an ingenious idea that with a few tweaks would be perfect.

of NeoOffice, do a great job of adding significant value and functionality for Mac users to their port of the OpenOffice.org suite.

Among the features that NeoOffice adds to the package are: support for Mac OS X Services including spelling and grammar checking, track pad gestures and a built-in media browser.

Although OpenOffice.org has recently become Aqua-native as well- previously it required X11 to run on Mac OS X- the performance of NeoOffice outstrips it considerably; simply opening a new document in OpenOffice. org can take two to three times as long as with NeoOffice. Past versions were a bit sluggish at times, but the new version is quite speedy, making it a real joy to use.

NeoOffice is available for both PPC Macs as well as Intel, making it a great choice for those with older machines.

It leads in language support on Mac as well, with 58 language packs available. Past versions had some problems with the handling of Arabic, mis-displaying some characters, but this seems to have been fixed with version 3.0.

With so many digital cameras to choose from, which one should you pick? The Panasonic Lumix DMC-LX3 is a great choice, but not for everyone. It’s main selling points, a fast, wide-angle lens and great manual controls, will not necessarily appeal to everyone. But they do make for a fantastic point and shoot camera for photographers who care about the photos they take.

This is a camera that you can put on full automatic and it will do a great job of capturing wellexposed photos. But that will not take advantage of the full potential, which lies in tweaking its settings and photographing at least partially in manual mode. The most noticeable physical part of the LX3 is obviously the lens. It’s a large Leica-made lens with a fast f2.0 maximum aperture. This means it’s made by one of the best lens manufacturers in the world, and you can capture photographs in less light than with many other point and shoot cameras.

With f2.0 you can also achieve shallow depth of field meaning you can blur out backgrounds, for example.

Panasonic has done a good job of keeping the controls easy. On top you find on-off switch, a dial for shooting mode, shutter release, and zoom control. On the reverse you find the large LCD display, a small joystick for interface control, and a set of very typical controls for camera operations

The lens, exposure and more are much more influential on the quality.

Does it take nice photographs?

Yes it does. With different metering and focus mode you’ll find one that matches how you want to photograph, and it does a good job even in very difficult situations to read them correctly.

At the lowest speed ISO80, photos are clear and crisp even when blown up a lot. At ISO400 you will see some noise, and at higher speeds it gets very noticeable and even disturbing.

And what would a digital camera review be without talking about the number of megapixels? The LX3 “only” has 10mp, a lot less than even some mobile phones today. But remember that it’s not the number of megapixels that decides the quality of a photo.

For many photographers the main drawback of the LX3 is going to be the short zoom range on the lens. It goes from 24mm to 60mm, so from wide angle to about normal in 35mm equivalent.

The 24mm is welcome because you can capture more, but the 60mm is disappointing when most comparable cameras go to 100mm or more. Besides the short zoom range, the weakest point of the LX3 is the RAW processing software called SilkyPix. Unfortunately iPhoto and Aperture don’t understand the LX3 RAW format and SilkyPix has an awkward interface. One good thing is that Adobe LightRoom supports the RAW format of the LX3, and if you can afford the

investment, it’s well worth it to leave SilkyPix behind.

In conclusion, the LX3 is a camera that is capable of taking wonderful photos but it requires a lot from the photographer to get the maximum out of it. With a fantastic lens and manual controls the options are there if you want to put in a bit of an effort. If you just want to shoot on automatic you can do that too but that’s not when this camera will shine.

‫أصبح مصطلح “بوينت أند شوت‬ ‫‪ – ”Point and shoot‬بالعربية “صوب‬ ‫والتقط”– شائعًا اليوم لوصف‬ ‫الكاميرات الرقمية بسيطة التشغيل‬ ‫بوضعية تحكم أوتوماتيكية وبحجم‬ ‫صغير نسبيًا‪ .‬وتتفاوت هذه الكاميرات‬ ‫في خصائصها وأحجامها ووضعيات‬ ‫ً‬ ‫إضافة إلى عدساتها‬ ‫التحكم بها‪،‬‬ ‫ومميزاتها‪ ،‬لتشمل قائمة طويلة من‬ ‫الكاميرات تكاد ال تنتهي‪.‬‬ ‫أحد هذه الكاميرات هي “لوميكس‬ ‫دي إم سي‪ -‬إل إكس‪3‬‬ ‫‪ ”Lumix DMC-LX3‬من “باناسونيك”‪،‬‬ ‫والتي تتميز بعدستها الممتازة‬ ‫وبوضعية تحكم يدوية فعالة لكل‬ ‫من يرغب بإضافة لمساته الخاصة‬ ‫على الصورة‪ .‬وذلك ال يعني ضعف‬ ‫وضعيتها األوتوماتيكية‪ ،‬بل على‬ ‫العكس‪ ،‬تتميز هذه الوضعية بقدرتها‬ ‫على التقاط صور جيدة وواضحة‪ .‬لكن‬ ‫الوضعية اليدوية الكاملة في هذه‬ ‫الكاميرا تتفوق على غيرها في إنتاج‬ ‫صور عالية الجودة وإظهار إمكانية‬ ‫الكاميرا القصوى‪ .‬وبالطبع يتطلب‬ ‫ً‬ ‫معرفة‬ ‫استخدام هذه الوضعية‬ ‫بأساسيات التصوير الفوتوغرافي‪.‬‬ ‫أول ما يجذب االنتباه في هذه‬ ‫الكاميرا‪ ،‬هي عدستها الواسعة من‬ ‫صنع “اليكا ‪ ،“ Leika‬أحد أهم مصنعي‬ ‫العدسات في العالم‪ ،‬والتي تتمتع‬ ‫بفتحة عدسة تصل سرعتها إلى ‪f2.0‬‬ ‫(يعبر هذا الرقم عن نسبة البعد‬ ‫البؤري إلى قطر العدسة الفعال‬ ‫أو بؤرة العدسة)‪ .‬أما الذي تعنيه‬ ‫سرعة العدسة هذه‪ ،‬فهو القدرة‬ ‫على التقاط صور في ظروف إضاءة‬ ‫ضعيفة‪ ،‬بجودة تتفوق على غيرها‬ ‫من الكاميرات بسيطة االستعمال‪.‬‬ ‫وكذلك القدرة على التحكم بعمق‬ ‫الميدان ‪ Depth of field‬اللتقاط صور‬ ‫بتركيز بؤري ضحل‪ ،‬بحيث تتميز‬ ‫بالتقاط شديد الوضوح لما هو قريب‬ ‫من العدسة على خلفية مشوشة‬ ‫ومبهمة ‪.Blurry‬‬ ‫بوضعياتها المتعددة‪ ،‬توفر هذه‬ ‫الكاميرا الخيار اللتقاط الصور التي‬ ‫ترغب بها‪ ،‬حتى في األوقات الصعبة‪.‬‬ ‫يمكن الحصول على صورة شديدة‬ ‫الصفاء عند استخدام حساسية أو‬ ‫سرعة فيلم “أيزو” منخفضة ‪،ISO80‬‬ ‫بينما تبدأ الصورة بالتشوش ‪Noise‬‬ ‫مع ‪ ،ISO400‬لتزداد تشويشًا مع‬ ‫السرعات األعلى‪.‬‬ ‫وبما أن حرب الميغابيكسل بين‬ ‫الكاميرات الرقمية تصل إلى ذروتها‬

‫هذه األيام‪ ،‬فال يمكن إجراء أي‬ ‫تقييم من غير ذكر دقة الكاميرا أو‬ ‫الميغابيكسل‪ .‬تتواضع كاميرا “إل‬ ‫إكس ‪ ”٣‬بتقديمها لدرجة دقة تصل‬ ‫إلى ‪ ١٠‬ميغابكسل فقط‪ ،‬بينما تتألق‬ ‫معظم الكاميرات‪ ،‬ومن ضمنها‬ ‫كاميرات بعض الهواتف المتحركة‪،‬‬ ‫بدرجات دقة أعلى‪ .‬لكن ما ال يدركه‬ ‫معظم الناس‪ ،‬أن تأثير حجم‬ ‫الميغابيكسل على نوعية وجودة‬ ‫الصور محدود جدًا مقارنة بالعوامل‬ ‫األخرى مثل نوعية العدسة‪ ،‬ووضعيات‬ ‫الكاميرا‪.‬‬ ‫العيب األساسي في هذه الكاميرا‬ ‫هو قصر مدى التقريب أو الزوم‬ ‫في العدسة‪ ،‬ليتراوح بين ‪ ٢٤‬مم‬ ‫لزاوية واسعة و‪ ٦٠‬مم لزاوية شبه‬ ‫طبيعية‪ ،‬بينما تتميز معظم‬ ‫بمدى يمتد إلى‬ ‫العدسات الواسعة‬ ‫ً‬ ‫‪ ١٠٠‬مم‪ .‬أما أكثر األمور إزعاجًا بالنسبة‬ ‫لمستخدمي “الماك”‪ ،‬فهو عدم دعم‬ ‫برنامجي “آي فوتو ‪ ”iPhoto‬و”آبريتشر‬ ‫‪ ”Aperture‬لصيغة تخزين الصورة‬ ‫الخام ‪ RAW‬التي تستخدمها الكاميرا‪،‬‬ ‫واضطرارهم الستخدام برنامج‬

Blog If you are going to blog you have many different options, including Wordpress.com, Blogger.com, self-hosted and more. A good choice for Mac users is iWeb ’09, part of Apple’s iLife ’09 suite of applications. Standard behavior on your Mac is to then launch iPhoto, which is a great photo management and editing application. A good tip is to arrange your photos into albums for easy retrieval later. In iPhoto you can also do simple editing of your photos, like straighten them and remove red eye.

Publish: In iWeb you click on the “Photos” icon on the left hand side. You can then click on “Photos” on the right. (If you don’t see it, click “Show Media”.)

Then to add photos you simply drag them from the browser on the right to the page. If you drag a whole album out to the page, iWeb will create a new page for you with those photos on it.

Widgets are small applications that you can add to your iWeb site to add functionality. It might be a Google Map, a YouTube video, web advertising, and more. Click on the “Widget” tab on the right and drag the widget you want to place out to your web page. If you want to experiment even more, try to see what you can do with the “HTML Snippet” widget.

Clearly, we now consume more news and media online, we communicate more online, and we socialize more in all its aspects using the Internet.

At the heart of this transformation lies a deceptively innocent technology called RSS (Really Simple Syndication). To put it simply, RSS allows contentconsumers to subscribe to new content so it arrives in one place, for example iTunes, without them having to go out all the time and find out if there’s something new to look at. Instead, software on your Mac or iPhone checks the RSS-feeds for the selected web sites and if there is something new, it can alert you and even download it automatically.

I’m sure you’ve seen the orange RSS icons all over the web, and perhaps wondered “what is that?” At the very heart of a RSS is a text file that exists on a web server. For a blog, for example, it describes the general information about the blog, as well as the details of each individual post. Whenever there is another blog post made, this text file is updated automatically by the blog system, and when your software checks if there’s anything new, the new post is downloaded to your computer.

Fortunately for you, your Mac is already wellprepared for RSS technology. You can subscribe to blogs and podcasts without downloading or purchasing any additional software. Whenever you browse to a site that has a RSS-feed, Safari will show a small blue RSS icon on the location bar. By clicking on the icon you can read the RSS-feed, as well as subscribe to it. If you want to subscribe to audio or video podcasts, iTunes is all you need. For more advanced RSS-reading needs, there is software like NetNewsWire (www.netnewswire.com) and web sites like Google Reader (reader.google.com). They all make it easier to subscribe to and follow a large number of RSS feeds, and offer various functions to make your life easier.

To put it succinctly, RSS is a wonderful technology that can help you keep up with a large quantity of information, without it taking too much time.

“Hackintosh” is a common term used to refer to a regular Windows PC onto which Mac OS X has been installed. Apple doesn’t support this practice, of course, and it can take quite a bit of hacking and tweaking of Mac OS X, drivers, and hardware to get it to work. That means this is not something you should attempt lightly. We purchased a Samsung NC10 netbook for the explicit purpose of trying to install Mac OS X on it, and in this article we’ll tell you what works or not so far.

‫عملت معظم الوظائف واألجزاء‬ ‫بشكل صحيح‪ ،‬جاعلة من “سامسونغ”‬ ‫حاسب “ماك” أو “هاكينتوش” قاب ً‬ ‫ال‬ ‫ً‬ ‫بداية‪ ،‬عملت بطاقة‬ ‫لالستخدام‪.‬‬ ‫الواي‪ -‬فاي من “دِ ل ‪ ”Dell‬بشكل‬ ‫تلقائي‪ ،‬موفرة لنا القدرة على االتصال‬ ‫باإلنترنت من اللحظة األولى‪ .‬كما‬ ‫تمكنا من استخدام جميع منافذ يو‬ ‫إس بي ‪ USB‬لوصل المشغالت الصلبة‬ ‫‪ Hard Drive‬ومشغالت فالش ‪Flash‬‬ ‫دون أية مشاكل‪ .‬وبتعديل طفيف‪،‬‬ ‫تمكنا من الحصول على دقة للشاشة‬ ‫‪ Resolution‬قدرها ‪ ،٦٠٠ × ١٠٢٤‬وبتعديل‬ ‫طفيف آخر‪ ،‬تمكنا من تشغيل الصوت‪.‬‬ ‫أما بالنسبة إلى لوحة التتبع ‪Track‬‬ ‫‪ pad‬فقد تمكن نظام تشغيل “ماك”‬ ‫من التعرف إليها وإلى جميع خدماتها‬ ‫من لمس‪ ،‬ونقر وسحب‪ .‬كما قمنا‬ ‫بتقدير قدرة البطارية على االستمرار‪،‬‬ ‫ولدهشتنا‪ ،‬فقد استمرت لحوالي ‪٦‬‬ ‫ساعات‪.‬‬

‫‪Hardware‬‬

‫‪You’d be surprised how much‬‬ ‫‪standard PC hardware is‬‬ ‫‪supported by Mac OS X. In fact,‬‬ ‫‪in base hardware there is little‬‬ ‫‪difference between a Mac and a‬‬ ‫‪PC. We added 1GB RAM to our‬‬ ‫‪NC10 for a total of 2GB. Also,‬‬ ‫‪we swapped out the 160GB hard‬‬ ‫‪drive for a super-sized 500GB‬‬ ‫‪drive. Finally- and this was very‬‬ ‫‪important- we got a Dell 1390 Wi‬‬‫‪Fi card from eBay and replaced‬‬ ‫‪the one in the NC10. These‬‬ ‫‪Dell Wi-Fi cards are supported‬‬ ‫‪natively by Mac OS X.‬‬

‫‪Software‬‬

‫‪Even though a standard Mac‬‬ ‫‪OS X 10.5 Leopard installation‬‬ ‫‪DVD will not work directly on‬‬ ‫‪a hackintosh, we did purchase‬‬ ‫‪one just for this project. To get a‬‬ ‫‪Leopard installation working you‬‬ ‫‪have a number of choices, all‬‬ ‫‪available on the internet.‬‬

‫‪What works‬‬

‫‪Most things work, at least to the‬‬ ‫‪level of the hackintosh being a‬‬ ‫‪perfectly usable “Mac”. Wi-Fi‬‬ ‫‪worked right away because we‬‬ ‫‪put in the Dell card, so we got‬‬ ‫‪online from the start. USB ports‬‬ ‫‪work fine too with both flash‬‬ ‫‪and hard drives. A small tweak‬‬ ‫‪and the full 1024×600 resolution‬‬ ‫‪of the display was working,‬‬ ‫‪another tweak and sound was‬‬ ‫‪working. Battery life is amazing,‬‬ ‫‪and although we have no firm‬‬ ‫‪calculations, we guesstimate‬‬ ‫‪it at around six hours at least.‬‬ ‫‪Concerning the trackpad, Mac‬‬ ‫‪OS X recognizes it fully and all‬‬ ‫‪tapping, clicking and dragging‬‬ ‫‪we’ve tried works just fine.‬‬

What doesn’t work

The main thing that still does not work are the function keys at the top of the keyboard. At least they don’t work for the alternative functionality.

For example, F1-F2 on a Mac has the alternative functionality of reducing and increasing the display’s brightness. That doesn’t work so the display is stuck on lowest brightness. There are fixes for this available but we haven’t got one that works yet. Ethernet doesn’t work and that’s apparently common on these netbook hackintoshes and connecting to external display doesn’t work either.

Text

Although a tumblelog is not really meant for text, at least not long text, you can post text with Tumblr. From the Dashboard at Tumblr.com, click “Text”. On the page that follows, type in the title of your entry and the text for the actual post. Click “Create post” when you’re done.

Twitter integration

Email

The simplest way to post to your tumblelog is simply to send an email to it. From the Dashboard, click on “Goodies”. On that page you’ll find an email address at the top right. Send an email to that address, attach a photo, and that photo will be posted to your tumblelog. Whatever you write as subject in the email will be the caption for the photo.

There are many plugins for WordPress that can add a wide variety of features and tools to your site; to find them, a good place to start is at the main plugin directory at WordPress.org. (wordpress.org/extend/plugins/) Note that adding plugins is not available on a standard WordPress.com account. To use plugins you must have an account with another host where plugins are allowed. A list of such hosts is available at WordPress.org as well. (wordpress.org/hosting/) There a few ways to install WordPress plugins, we will cover FTP, web upload, and search and install.

FTP

When you find a plugins that you want to use, download it to your computer. If it is in a compressed format, such as zip, expand it. Then use an FTP program to upload it to the ’/wp-content/plugins’ folder of your site’s server. (You will need to check your blog host for the FTP settings for uploading.)

Web upload

If you have downloaded a plugin that is in zip format you can also upload it through the admin section of your WordPress blog. In the Dashboard area click on the “Plugins” link on the left side and then on “Add New”. In the “Install a plugin in .zip format” section, click on the “Choose file” button and select the file on your computer, then press the “Install now” button.

Activation and configuration Search and install

The easiest and most convenient way to find and add plugins is now built-in to WordPress.

On the sidebar, click on “Plugins”, then “Installed” and activate the desired plugin by clicking the appropriate link. To configure your plugins, click on Settings in the sidebar and then on the name of the plugin that you want to set up. Make sure that you save the settings when are done configuring the plugin.

On the “Install Plugins” page, you can search for and directly install plugins from the WordPress Plugin Directory. You can either enter a term in the search field for the type of plugin you want to find, or click on a term from the “Popular tags” section at the bottom of the page. If you find a plugin you want to try on the results page, simply click the “Install” link on the right side of the entry, and “Install now” in the resulting popup.

Once the plugin has been installed you have to activate the plugin for it to start working. After activation, for most plugins you can configure them in terms of how they work.
