افتتاحية العدد بقلم عمران العويس
Many days I feel happy that I’m a Mac user, especially when I talk to Windows-using friends who have recurring problems with viruses and other malware. I remember those days back at university, before I switched, when it seemed like every week there was something spreading on campus computers, and I had to regularly wipe my Windows installation and start over. Since going all Mac I’ve not had any of those problems. My Macs have been more secure and reliable than any PC I’ve ever used, and I wish more people in the Middle East would know about that and benefit as much as I have from going all-Mac. That’s one reason why I am so passionate about Shufflegazine, and our mission to spread Apple knowledge around the region. The topic of this issue, backup and security, was planned ever since October last year, but in an interesting coincidence we’ve struggled recently with many of these issues at CENTIMETERCUBE. We moved into a new office just a few weeks ago, and that brought together the two wings of the business: the Mac-based publishing part and the Windowsbased architecture part. Combining these two worlds into one office, connected to one network, and with one backup system, has challenged us technically, organizationally, and procedurally. We have struggled with many of the same issues in security and backup that you struggle with in your business. I hope we can bring you some of our experience in this and future issues. These are issues that we don’t always like talking about but we have to, and the more we can share our experiences the better off we all are. Yes, it’s true that our chosen platform, the Mac, is more stable and secure than the alternatives, but that doesn’t mean we can let our guard down.

أشعر بالسعادة في أوقات كثيرة كوني مستخدمًا للماك والسيما عندما أتحدث إلى أصدقائي من مستخدمي ويندوز عن المشاكل التي يعانون منها بسبب الفيروسات ما زلت أتذكر عندما كنت طالبًا في.والبرامج الضارة الجامعة قبل أن أتحول إلى الماك عندما كان ينتشر علي فيروس ما أسبوعيًا بين حواسب الجامعة وكان ّ محو ويندوز وتنصيبه مجددًا ولكن منذ انتقالي إلى الماك إن حواسب الماك التي. لم أعد أعاني من تلك المشاكل استخدمتها والتي أستخدمها اآلن أيضًا كانت أكثر أمنًا لذا أتمنى أن،واعتمادية من أي حاسب “بي سي” استخدمته يتعرف مستخدمون أكثر في الشرق األوسط إلى الماك وأن ُ استفدت منه أنا شخصيًا منذ انتقالي يستفيدوا منه كما وهذا هو أحد أسباب شغفي بمجلة شفل،إليه بالكامل .جازين وبمهمتها كمجلة في نشر ثقافة آبل في المنطقة خططنا لموضوع هذا العدد الذي يتناول النسخ االحتياطي ،واألمن فقد كان مخططًا له منذ أكتوبر من العام الماضي لكن في مصادفة ُملفتة واجهنا مؤخرًا العديد من األمور المتعلقة بمضمون هذا العدد في شركتنا “سنتيميتر كيوب” حيث انتقلنا إلى مكتب جديد منذ بضعة أسابيع جناحي أعمالنا معًا وهما قطاع النشر وقد دمجنا فيه َ الذي يعتمد بيئة ماك وقطاع الهندسة المعمارية الذي ّ بالطبع.يعتمد بيئة ويندوز مثلت عملية دمج العالمين في مكتب واحد وضمن شبكة واحدة وبنظام نسخ احتياطي واحد تحديًا على المستوى التقني والتنظيمي لذا واجهنا نفس تعقيدات النسخ االحتياطي،بالنسبة إلينا أتمنى أن.واألمن التي تواجهك أنت ايضًا أثناء إدارة أعمالك نقدم لكم بعضًا من خبرتنا في هذا العدد وفي األعداد في واقع األمر ال نود في كثير من األحيان.المستقبلية فكلما تشاركنا،الحديث في هذه األمور ولكن ذلك واجب ال شك أن عالم ماك هو.خبراتنا كلما حققنا نتائج أفضل لكن ذلك ال يعني أن،أكثر استقرارًا وأمنًا من البدائل األخرى .نغفل موضوعًا كهذا

Skype becomes Most Popular Download in UAE App Store ً أكثر البرامج تحمي،سكايب ال في “متجر البرامج” الخاص باإلمارات Skype, arguably the best known software for VoIP (Voice Over Internet Protocol), released a version of their application for iPhone and iPod touch in April. Within 24 hours it made the number one spot on the list of most downloaded free apps in the UAE iTunes App Store. VoIP is not legal in the UAE, where the www.skype. com web site is blocked, but so far the Skype app is still available through the App Store. The Skype app works only over Wi-Fi, not over a 3G data connection. The TRA (Telecommunications Regulatory Authority) in the UAE, said in a statement, “The TRA scope of responsibility towards telecom customers in the UAE is within the usage of the telecoms services within and outside the UAE through licensed telecoms operators, in order to guarantee quality of service, safety of the customer, and to face security concerns as a result of using unlicensed services in the UAE.” TRA has not stated whether they will block the access to the Skype application in the App Store. In Germany, T-Mobile has stated that they will not allow their iPhone customers to use the new Skype application, but so far they’ve not blocked access to the app in the German App Store.

Etisalat And TRA Battle Over iPhone اتصاالت وهيئة تنظيم اإلتصاالت تتنازعان على اآلي فون Etisalat’s CEO, Mohammed Al Qazmi, was quoted in the Arabic Al Khaleej newspaper recently as saying that Etisalat had submitted a request to the TRA to reduce the price of iPhone and the related packages but they had not heard back from TRA (Telecommunications Regulatory Authority) yet. Somewhat contradictory, the same article also stated that Etisalat had submitted a number of new pricing schemes for their iPhone offering to TRA, but they had been rejected. In a related story in Arabian Business, a “source” claims that “Etisalat is seeking approval from the UAE telecommunications regulator to lock the next shipment of iPhones to its own network”. A few days after these statements from Etisalat appeared in the press, the TRA responded. Their statement says, “The TRA does not interfere in the deals or agreements done by any of the licensed telecoms operators with any third party, hence, the TRA is not aware of the details of the agreement between Etisalat and Apple.” The statement continues, “Yet, we permitted Etisalat to sell the iPhone handset in cost price, and has also approved some of the pricing offers submitted by Etisalat.” TRA makes reference to the PCP (Price Control Policy) available on their web site (tra.ae). Both operators – Etisalat and du – have to comply with the PCP in their product and service offerings but it’s TRA’s role to review what’s submitted and see if it’s compliant with the PCP. The PCP includes a few passages worth noting; “Licensees shall not put into effect any retail or wholesale prices that involve bundling together monopoly services with services that are competitive or considered by the TRA to become competitive within a reasonable timeframe”, and “Licensees shall not put into effect any retail or wholesale prices which are anti-competitive.” Finally, we can read in TRA’s statement that their “objective is to protect

Egypt Removes Ban For GPS GPS مصر ترفع الحظر عن نظام تحديد المواقع العالمي As reported by the Daily News Egypt (shuffle.to/gpsegypt) the National Telecommunications Regulatory Authority (NTRA) in Egypt has removed the ban on GPS in the country. When iPhone 3G was introduced to the Egyptian market in 2008 by Vodafone and Mobinol, the device was crippled in that the GPS functionality was disabled. GPS (Global Positioning System) is a technology whereby electronic devices, such as iPhone, can tell users their exact location by communicating with satellites in orbit around the planet. Only two countries, Syria and North Korea, now have bans on GPS technology and use. It’s not clear at this point what this news means for future iPhone devices, nor whether already sold iPhones can get the GPS functionality enabled.

Mihai covered a wide range of topics, focusing on what Adobe has to offer in the space of Rich Internet Applications (RIA). This included Flash, Flex, and AIR, all part of the same family of applications, aimed at developing interactive
multimedia applications for the internet. Brad Moody, Applied Comunication faculty and Apple Distinguished Educator, said “We’re extremely excited to have Adobe here, showing new technologies. We teach our students Flash but this session shows them what Flash and other cutting edge technologies are really capable of. I think it helps our designer students understand the capabilities of these technologies so they can work across disciplines, with programmers and others.”

Etisalat Launches Blackberry Storm اتصاالت تطلق بالك بيري ستورم
Etisalat introduced the Blackberry Storm to the UAE market on April 7, 2009. The Storm is the first device from Research In Motion (RIM) with a touch interface. Users can feel the Storm’s screen actually move in a little bit when they press on it with their fingers. RIM did not put Wi-Fi in the Storm, but in many other areas it’s well equipped, with multimedia player for music and movies, Bluetooth, 3G connectivity, replaceable battery, memory card slot, etc. Comparisons between the Storm and Apple’s iPhone are inevitable, and Etisalat said when introducing the Storm that they view the devices as complimentary. In their view the Storm will be of interest more to corporate customers, while the
iPhone will get more traction in the consumer space. Earlier in April RIM launched the Blackberry AppWorld online application store, similar to Apple’s AppStore, part of their iTunes offering. AppWorld is currently available only in US and Canada but at the launch of the Storm, Etisalat said they’re working on bringing the AppWorld to the Middle East, but they would not give a specific date for when it could be expected. At the same time as they launched the Storm, Etisalat announced that they’ve passed 100,000 Blackberry subscribers. The price for Blackberry Storm from Etisalat is AED3150. 2009 جلف فوتو بلس Shufflegazine was one of the sponsors of the 2009 edition of Gulf Photo Plus in Dubai, running March 30-April 4. Located at Knowledge Village in Dubai, this year’s Gulf Photo Plus offered a long list of workshops for interested participants, including one about iLife ‘09 presented by Shufflegazine. Other presenters included Chase Jarvis, David Hobby, David Nightingale, Joe McNally and many others. Gulf Photo Plus has established itself as the annual event that anyone interested in photography and related topics must attend. Shufflegazine’s Business Development Manager Nagham Akileh said about the event, “It was exciting being here as a part of Gulf Photo Plus 2009. We’re very happy about our participation. Du Launched New “Elite Plan” Package For “Smart People” أطلقت “دو” باقة خدماتها الجديدة ”“االشتراك المميز
Du has launched a new service called the Elite Plan, aimed at “smart people”. The press conference launch was preceded by an announcement saying that “two new products” would be introduced, and that they were something that “has the potential to change the way we live”. The Du CEO, Osman Sultan, began his presentation by saying that he would introduce something that will “redefine mobility”. What he introduced was the Elite Plan, a monthly bundle of voice minutes, SMS, and data, which, according to Du, “fits specifically with the needs” of today’s busy lifestyle. In May, 1993, the Mac operating system was System 7.1, a far cry from the current Mac OS X 10.5.6 Leopard. With the launch of Mac OS X in 2001, Apple wiped out the virus problem that had plagued their operating system almost since the launch of the Mac in 1984. A: The easiest and cheapest way is to use Disk Utility to created an Encrypted Disk Image. Disk Utility you can find in the Applications > Utility folder. Start Disk Utility and go to File > New > Blank Disk Image. From there you can select how large the disk image should be and what level of encryption it should have. If you make it a “sparse” image it will grow as you put more information into it. A “read/write” disk is of a fixed size. Q: I just bought a MacBook, my first Mac. Do I need antivirus software and which one should I get? A: Mac OS X users don’t need to worry much about viruses and other malware attacking their computers and information. And no matter what antivirus software you install your best protection is behavior. Don’t visit strange web sites and download files from them, be careful with email attachments, etc. But it’s still not a bad idea to run antivirus software. The free ClamXAV is very good (www.clamxav.com) and if you don’t mind paying a bit, our choice in commercial antivirus software for Mac is Intego’s VirusBarrier (www. intego.com/virusbarrier). Q: I have passwords for everything – web sites, email, etc. – and I know I should pick long and complicated ones so they are hard to guess. But I
just can’t be bothered most of the time so I stick to one or two standard ones. What can I do to make my information more secure without complicating things a lot? A: First of all, you’re perfectly right in your assessment of passwords. They should be as long and varied as possible. Use a mix of letters, digits, symbols, etc. Whatever is allowed by the particular web site or application. “SteveJobs” is a bad password, “S!tev#eJ0bs7” is much better. In the Mac OS X Accounts System Preference pane there is actually help in this regard. When you create a new account password or change password, click on the small key button. A window will appear that can random-generate a password for you, or at the very least help rate your password in terms of how secure it may be. But we know we have to have passwords for everything these days. One recommendation I have is for you to use 1Password (shuffle.to/1passwd). With 1Password you store all your usernames and passwords with the application (on Mac and iPhone) and protect them

with one strong login. The risk is, of course, if you forget the 1Password login you might be in trouble, but at least that is only one login to remember, not a few hundred. Q: My way of backing up is simple, I burn a disc from time to time. To be honest I often forget for a long period of time and I’m also not very good at keeping track of all old backup discs. What can you suggest I do to make my backups more reliable? A: Depending on how much data you have to back up and how important it is for you to keep it, there are different solutions. If you have only enough data that fits on one Mac, get two external hard drives and back up to one with Time Machine, SuperDuper or something similar. Then if you want to be extra safe, once in a while, copy the backup hard drive to the second external one. Then take that hard drive to somewhere else, like a friend’s house. If you do want to keep backing up to DVD make sure you have multiple copies. Optical media will reduce in quality over time and eventually you won’t be able to use them at all.

مدمن على التخزين You can’t have too much storage for your Mac, I often say. But I’m not a good example of that as I don’t actually have that much storage space, at least not compared to some other people I know. We do have a 2TB Drobo at home, mostly for temporary storage of movies, and I also have a few external hard drives for storage of various things. On one 500GB drive I keep everything that doesn’t fit on my MacBook’s 128GB drive; it’s all kinds of things I’ve downloaded or copied from others, pictures, movies, apps, and more. It’s a collection that will probably never be cleaned up but it’s comforting to me; silly, I know, to keep all of it around. What I do use more and more is online storage. I’ve been a user of Amazon S3 through JungleDisk for years, and it’s a great service. That’s where I stick everything I store longer term, things I don’t often need access to. That which I need on a daily basis I keep online and on my Macs with GetDropBox.com. It’s automatically synced between Macs and online and it works very well. I now store large amounts of data, tens of gigabytes, online with these services but it hasn’t exactly reduced my need of offline storage. Rather, it seems I just need more and more storage space. Recently I wrote in a web article about whether our increasing need for storage is the chicken or the egg. I mean, do we have more storage because we have more to

store or do we store more because we have more storage? It’s not a question with great implications, I know, but at the core it’s an important issue. And we do have technologies now for creating amazing amounts of digital information, like HD video, highmegapixel cameras, and more. Most of the things we do, and especially in Dubai it seems, should be the biggest, the best, the fastest, the tallest, etc. And the same goes for storage. It’s very important that you remember to figure out how you can keep all that data safe and sound. In my mind, that today involves putting data online. There are many good automatic online backup services. Try them out for yourself and you might just figure out that you can better cover your storage and backup needs by putting some data online.

James Andrews, who is with a very well known media/pr firm, landed in Memphis, the headquarters of FedEx and tweeted saying,”True confession but I’m in one of those towns where I scratch my head and say ‘I would die if I had to live here!’”. This tweet is now being called the “Worst Twitter post ever” by Bnet.com. FedEx took the insult personally after one of its employees spotted it and reported it higher up, which lead to a very public dressing down of Mr. Andrews. Later, Andrews had to post an apology on his blog, followed by his employer, after which FedEx said it was letting it go. The irony was that Andrews was in town to present on
your Facebook profile, remove images that are potentially scandalous. Spruce up your tweets and basically be a good boy or girl online. The lines are blurring between professional and personal life. We all talk about the convenience of social media, but we don’t talk about the cost of social media, which is privacy. Whenever I tweet, I now think twice before tweeting, I don’t tweet about my work or something of that sort, not even if its a very proud professional moment. If you see my Facebook profile, you won’t find photos that are damaging (just for the record I don’t have any damaging photos as I am in reality a very good guy, seriously). Does that mean we have to self censor ourselves? Not really. For me, I

Shufflegazine caught up with Sumudu in Dubai, shortly after he had purchased his iPhone from Etisalat. Since he was one of the very first customers for Etisalat’s iPhone offering, we wanted to talk to him about his experience and get his advice for others who may be interested in getting an iPhone from Etisalat. Q: Tell us a bit about yourself and what you do. A: My name is Sumudu Gunaratne, I live in Dubai. I’ve been an Apple fan since last two years. I first started with iMac and then last year I also got a MBA and first generation iPhone. I’ve been really happy and enjoying using all of my Apple stuff. I work for an Airline. Q: So you bought an Etisalat iPhone 3G. Where and when did you buy it? A: I was waiting to get an Etisalat iPhone, since I first read about it coming to Dubai in Shufflegazine. Then there were public rumors about Etisalat will be launching iPhone 3G in Dubai some time on February 25th or so. Then I saw a post on www.emiratesmac.com site about the proposed iPhone Tariff Plan. I think that was on February 21st. So, on the same day, I visited Etisalat outlet located at Emirates Group Headquarters and enquired when they will be launching the iPhone. They said that it was expected any time and as soon as they get stocks, it will be sold there. In any case, until the closure of business that day, it was not sold. Then on the next day Sunday, February 22nd, I dropped by at the same Etisalat
I was waiting to get an Etisalat iPhone, since I first read about it coming to Dubai in Shufflegazine. outlet and checked about the iPhone. WOW! They’ve received the iPhones by that time; however, they were waiting till they receive the go ahead from main Etisalat Office to sell. I wanted to be the first one to grab a Etisalat iPhone from that shop so I told the Manager to give me a quick call when they are ready to sell iPhones. At around 11:30am, he called me and informed me that they were okay to sell iPhone. So I quickly ran to the shop and bought the phone. Q: You have followed the news I’m sure. There are many
who are not happy with what Etisalat is offering, saying the plans are expensive, for example. What plan did you get and what do you think about Etisalat’s pricing of iPhone? A: I bought 16GB Price Plan 4, primarily because I thought I will be using the iPhone for mobile computing, social networking and stuff. Without doing lots of math, my view is that, if one looks at just the monthly rental for the phone; times twelve months plus upfront charge, it appears it’s a lot of money for an iPhone. For example Plan 4 amounts to AED8091. However, we need to consider

I know it is not really a generous amount of voice, SMS and data, particularly when we compare to some other parts of the world. Having said that and in fairness to Etisalat, this is the first time that Etisalat have come up with such a plan for any phone and they are I guess still in the learning curve for this kind of pricing and plans etc. Q: What’s your impression of Etisalat’s whole handling of the iPhone introduction in UAE? A: I have to say, the branch that I purchased the iPhone handled the launch and selling of the phone in a professional and friendly manner. However, I think, overall, Etisalat UAE could have handled the launch even better; for example through good advertising and promotions, marketing in good time, without waiting till the last minute. Q: What advice do you have for others who might be thinking about getting an Etisalat iPhone? A: I will say; go for it. But work out the numbers about the tariff plan carefully and select the most suitable one for you.

And you can pick from 14 languages, not including Arabic, unfortunately. There is really not much bad that can be said about the latest iPod. If anything I find it a bit hard to get into the whole pressing the button on the earphones cord bit; to remember how many clicks does what. But that’s me looking hard for something to criticize.
Apple surprised everyone by introducing the latest generation of the diminutive iPod shuffle in March. There was no special event, no rumors on the web or any of the other stuff we’ve come to expect when Apple is bringing out new products. When I first tried it in person, it seemed so much smaller than I had anticipated. It’s really tiny. I can anticipate many iPod shuffles being lost because they are so small and light. You could easily forget this in a pocket of your jeans and then have it go into the washing machine, for example. With its small size and without display, the new shuffle is a good iPod for exercise or desert exploration. It won’t be as susceptible to being thrown around, and dust and dirt like the other iPods. It’s not your main iPod however. You probably still want a different iPod as your main device, then use the shuffle for a smaller subset of your music and use it in situations where it’s appropriate. Besides the new size the new shuffle has no physical controls on the actual iPod anymore. There is a switch for on-off and toggling between repeat and shuffle mode, that’s it. With no controls on the iPod, Apple has introduced VoiceOver instead. Basically the iPod speaks to you through the earphones. When it’s playing a track, hold down the button on the

It’s a stand. For your iPod touch. That’s pretty much it. Not to say that it isn’t useful; the most obvious use is to make it easy to watch videos on your iPod touch, hands free, eliminating futile attempts to lean it against your teacup while eating lunch. And it’s actually more useful than it might seem initially; it rotates to allow your iPod to be in portrait as well as landscape position, so the stand can keep it handy while you are busy at your Mac. No fumbling for it to change tracks in iTunes, or to use that handy app; it can be right there, easily accessible next to your keyboard. The iPod is held in place by rubber tabs at the corners. It’s best to make sure that it’s pressed in snugly so it doesn’t slip out. The Xtand comes with two sets of rubber tabs; 1 each for both the 1st and 2nd generation iPod touch. (Actually, the tabs for the 1G seemed to hold the 2G a little more firmly, so you may want to experiment to see which you prefer.) So, with some usage testing, the Xtand does seem to have some utility after all, although not necessarily enough to warrant its price. It is stylish, resembling the stands for Apple’s Cinema Displays, but half the price would still be more than enough to pay for what is really just a minor convenience.

doesn’t play DRM-protected music and video bought from the iTunes Store. But since we don’t have any iTunes Store with music and video in the Middle East that may not be a big problem for most users. Let’s see how I fared with trying different videos: A video straight out of Flip Mino HD video camera (“Cannot play video! Image size too big. (1280×720)”), “Welcome to Macintosh” unprotected M4V file (have to download/purchase H.264 plugin), “Doctor Zhivago” bought from iTunes (“Cannot play video! File is damaged or incomplete!”). The device does a good job of display photos but it would be nice if I could take them straight from iPhoto. Now I have to export them, then drag them across to the Archos 5. Playing music the Archos 5 does very well. I tried different MP3 files and it played them without problems. The volume is pretty loud but as could be expected with small speakers it breaks up and sounds “thin” at high volumes. My first impression of the Archos 5 multimedia and internet tablet was “Wow, this looks really cool.” Let’s be up front about this: this is not a device marketed at Mac users. With a Mac, basically all it does is mount as a storage device on the Mac OS X desktop and you drag files over to it, whether they be pictures, music or movies. But you have to do that manually, in Finder, which makes this a no-go for many users. There is no syncing with iTunes, iPhoto, and other familiar Mac applications. Screen and Interface The Archos 5 has a 4.8-inch screen with 800×480 pixels. It’s a very nice screen that covers almost an entire side of the device. After the iPhone’s revolutionary multi-touch interface everything else seems a bit dated. But to be fair to the Archos 5, as a touch interface it works really well, much better than the Nokia 5800, for example. The controls you’re pressing with your finger are large enough and the screen is really responsive. That said, the structure and grouping of menu choices and the constant nagging about buying add-ons is annoying. Multimedia Archos has really worked hard at making this tablet compatible with a wide range of multimedia formats. Unfortunately, since it doesn’t talk to iTunes, it
Internet Besides multimedia, internet is something the Archos does well. Via Wi-Fi you can do email, web, and more. One thing Archos pushes very hard is that the device plays Flash movies, something that of course Apple’s devices don’t. The email client supports various types of email accounts, including IMAP, which I was happy to see. Last Word For many users I’m sure the Archos 5 is a wonderful device but for us Apple fans it’s just not good enough. Especially considering the alternatives of iPhone and iPod touch, which seamlessly sync with iTunes and our Macs. To capture Apple fans as customers Archos will have to work a lot harder. I must admit it’s fun to play with for a bit but it’s not something I’d go out and buy for myself.

iPhone you gently touch the keys and typing flows quickly and smoothly. The iPhone registers where you touch the screen with an accuracy that is not there in the Storm, it seems, especially when it comes to clicking. Actually, personally, I am much more comfortable with typing on the Blackberry Bold’s physical keyboard than I am on the Storm. The iPhone’s keyboard trumps them both though.
After having used a Blackberry Storm for a couple of weeks, I could sum up this review in a very brief, “It’s not an iPhone,” but that would be short changing you as a reader. But my simple view of the Storm is that if it came out a few years ago, it would have been an amazing device, but now, with iPhone 3.0 knocking on the door to be released, the Storm is just not good enough. For RIM (Research In Motion), the company behind Blackberry, that’s just something they have to get used to: that the iPhone is the benchmark they have to beat and that they’re constantly compared with. The main thing about the Storm is, of course, that it’s a touch interface device. RIM really tries hard to make a point out of the Storm’s screen being “clickable”. The thing is that the whole screen is like a big button, on which you “click” with your finger. When you press it, it moves in a little bit, just like the track pad on the newer Mac notebooks. It takes some getting used, at least for me, but even after some time I can’t get completely comfortable with it. In all fairness, perhaps I’ve used iPhone too much. The idea is that there are two steps to interaction with the interface; first, you touch the screen to scroll or make a selection, then you physically “click” the screen to start an action. For most functionality, I don’t see the need for these two steps though. The 3.25-inch (480×360 pixels) screen is very responsive to touch however, almost as good as the iPhone, and swiping, to scroll up and down for example, works very well. But as with the interface for Nokia 5800, it was not built from the start with touch in mind, it was adapted later on. But RIM has done a better job than Nokia to make their OS and interface work with touch input. That doesn’t mean, however, that it’s not awkward at times; frustrating even. Especially typing on the keyboard takes some getting used to after being used to an iPhone. On
Battery life is comparable to that of iPhone 3G. The Storm has no Wi-Fi that can drain the battery but with a lot of data usage the battery is pretty much flat at the end of the day. You can then, of course, pop another battery into the Storm, something you can’t do with the iPhone. One thing that annoys me with RIM and the Storm, is that they’ve changed the connector by which you connect to a Mac. It used to be the common Mini-USB port, now it’s Micro-B USB, not as common by far. Compared to my Bold as well as my iPhone the Storm is not getting as good a connection in many place. For example, I get good, stable, fast 3G connection almost wherever I go within our office. With the Storm, however, I hardly get any connection at all and when I do it’s like one or two bars, no full strength as with the other two devices. Blackberrys are still fundamentally business phones, and not so much focused on consumers. But with the last few devices they’ve built in better and better

multimedia support, and the Storm is no different. It plays video at great quality on the gorgeous screen, and music comes through with good clarity through the speaker, even at high volumes. The 3.2MP camera is a bit of a letdown, as even with more megapixels than iPhone, it still doesn’t produce very nice photos. Actually, the iPhone’s 2MP camera beats the Storm’s camera in the quality department. And the autofocus is frustratingly slow in most situations, meaning you won’t want to use it or won’t use it at all. What saves the Storm a bit is that it does record video and that it has a slot for a memory card. With the memory card you’re obviously able to expand the storage to fit your needs. The web browser is much improved on the Storm, even compared to the Bold. Web sites generally appear correctly, and things like JavaScript seem to work better than in previous versions. But again, compared to Mobile Safari on iPhone, the Storm comes up short. Email is where the Storm shines, just like with other Blackberry phones. Don’t expect to have full Arabic support in the Storm though, in interface, on the web, or in emails. The Storm does not currently support Arabic, but RIM said it’s “coming soon”. In conclusion, the Storm is not an iPhone. But RIM has worked hard at this device and they’ve come very far. Sure, the Storm has an exchangeable battery, and sure, it has expandable memory, but in my mind there are two main reasons why you’d pick the Storm over the iPhone. The first one is that it has better data plans than what is currently offered for iPhone in UAE at least. AED185 for unlimited domestic data per month and AED295 of unlimited international data per month. The second reason is that it has better support for many corporation’s IT infrastructures. And with that in mind the Storm will be the choice for many, companies and individual customers alike.

Sync With Mac
When you buy the Storm there is no sync solution for Mac in the box. You can download the free PocketMac for Blackberry. (www. pocketmac.com) It has the basic functionality, but it feels a bit old and outdated. For syncing music to the Storm, RIM provides Blackberry Media Sync (shuffle.to/berrymediasync). It does the trick in a simple way, and it’s also free. The best solution however, with the most options, is Missing Sync for Blackberry (shuffle.to/ missingberry). It’s $39.95 but it does have more functionality than the others, and in version 2.0 it even supports sync via Bluetooth.

Previous English versions of CS4 have not been able to create new Arabic text in documents and that’s still true. In Photoshop CS4, for example, you can work on Arabic in an existing Arabic text layer. You can even download a template for this purpose (shuffle.to/arabiccs4). If you want full Arabic support you will have to get the Middle East version of CS4 (shuffle.to/winsoftcs4).
The main tool for many designers, architects, photographers and others is one or more applications from Adobe’s Creative Suite. With version four of CS, Adobe has again added functionality, much of it welcome and helpful, but some of it not so necessary. In my mind CS4 is not a must-have upgrade as some previous versions were, but let’s take a look at what’s new in CS4, and why you might want to consider upgrading if you haven’t already. Overall the main difference in CS4 is the interface. The interface has been unified across the applications so it now looks and works pretty much the same way in all applications. That is very welcome news indeed.

Adobe’s flagship product continues to develop. In the CS4 update they have mainly focused on interface, putting in some new functionality, and moved options around in menus and panels. Starting with interface, Adobe has introduced the Application Frame; think of it as a window in which you can put all panels, documents, etc. Not everyone will like the Application Frame, and it is optional. It took me quite some time to get used to working in this new way because it seems really Windows-like. At the top of the screen you will see the Application Bar, with handy access to workflow and workspace tools and options. At the heart of much editing in Photoshop are Adjustment Layers and Masks. They were previously a bit obscured, but now they are front and center in a panel of their own. If I were to pick out one cool thing in Photoshop CS4 it has to be the ContentAware Scaling Tool. Like magic it can resize parts of a picture without affecting the main focal point. It’s hard to describe, you just have to see it to believe it. Photoshop CS4 is not a must have upgrade. Chances are you’re very productive in your previous version of Photoshop, so my advice to most users would be to stay with the version you have, unless you think the new interface will help you work faster or better.
Besides Photoshop, Illustrator must be the hardest working application in Creative Suite. In Illustrator CS4, Adobe has finally introduced multiple-page documents, a long overdue functionality. It’s amazing, really, that it’s taken this long. Now with support for multiple artboards in a single Illustrator document, designers may not have to look at Indesign anymore for certain projects. Artboards can be of different size, which makes Illustrator a very flexible tool for packaging design, among other things. The implementation of multiple artboards might not be familiar to users though. Each artboard appears on the main workspace, more like a light table for photographers than a multiple-page document. In terms of drawing, smart guides show you helping lines when you try to resize, move or place an object. The lines show you how the object is positioned in relation to what’s around it, a la OmniGraffle and KeyNote. There are also significant improvements to painting and gradients. For most designers the addition of multiple artboard support is reason enough to upgrade.

The main new things in Indesign CS4 are crossreferencing, export to Flash, smart guides (like in Illustrator), and improved preflight. A small, but significant update is the functionality of the Links panel. It’s easier than before to update and replace linked files, something welcome to most designers, I’m sure. Also welcomed by many is the Flash export. You can, with a few clicks, export Indesign documents to SWF or XFL files. If you design long documents, the cross-referencing will come in very handy. Now you can place a “read the rest of the article on page X” note somewhere, and Indesign can automatically update the “X” to the actual page number. Lastly, the preflight is much improved in CS4. Before you had to go to the File menu, select Preflight and your options, and Indesign would check the document. Now it’s done through a panel where you click for your options and Indesign shows the result to you live. Indesign CS4 doesn’t really contain any new killer features, but rather Adobe put in a few things that could be really helpful to users.
So, Adobe is building in more Flash support in their other applications like Indesign, and the Flash application in itself has gone through a more dramatic transformation than the other CS4 siblings. It seems Adobe wants to make Flash more accessible to noncoders, with better support for complex animations without writing code. The timeline and stage have switched positions, putting more emphasis on the stage compared to the timeline. Familiar concepts like frames and keyframes are still there, but it’s partially hidden in interface and functionality, putting more user-friendly options in the forefront. In terms of animation there are other very exciting additions, like Motion Editor (advanced tool for fine grain control of animations), Bone Tool (mimicking how the human body moves), and Deco Tool (similar to many drawing tools in Illustrator). As Adobe’s other tools move in behind Flash- as at the very least, you can get Flash movies started with them- it must be harder for the company to keep progressing the Flash application. With Flash CS4 they’ve clearly changed their focus a bit, and overall I must say it’s an impressive change.

”لوحة مفاتيح مضاءة من “لوجيتك When we announced Logitech’s launch of the Illuminated Keyboard in the April issue we didn’t know that Logitech had completely ignored Mac users. Logitech’s local representation in Dubai sent it over for us to review, and in most aspects I love this keyboard. In fact I might like it enough to overlook the main problem with it: that it’s not really supposed to be used with a Mac. The Logitech Illuminated Keyboard’s main feature is just that, that the characters on the keys light up in conditions of low light. If you’ve seen a MacBook Pro’s keyboard light up, you know what it looks like and how it works. This is a very nice feature, although it’s not as necessary on a desktop keyboard as it is in a notebook, I think. This is a fantastic keyboard to type on. What keyboard you prefer is a very personal choice and what I like, you may not. But the keys on this keyboard are both soft and distinct at the same time, if that makes any sense. Logitech calls this the “PerfectStroke” system. To put it simply, this is one of the nicest keyboards I’ve ever tried in terms of the feeling of typing on it. So that’s the good part, now on to the bad. Many keys have markings for different functions, like email, home, etc. But since there is no Mac OS X software to configure and control the keys that functionality cannot be used. The Mac specific functions in Mac OS X, like Dashboard on F12, are working fine though. If you look at Logitech’s web page for this product, it only shows Windows, not Mac, so in their defense they don’t claim Mac compatibility. But with that shortcoming it’s hard to recommend this keyboard to any Mac user. With software it would get full marks, without it, it barely gets a passing grade.

Since we can’t convey sound through the pages of the magazine, I guess you’ll have to take our word for it. It’s basically a non-powered speaker for your iPhone. That means it requires no batteries, no power adapter. The sound from the iPhone’s speakers is reinforced acoustically by channeling the
sound through carefully designed chambers inside the AirCurve. The result is nothing short of astounding. It has plastic inserts for the original iPhone as well as iPhone 3G. Also there are grooves for you to fit an iPhone cable in the AirCurve, so it can charge at the same time as it’s playing. I’m the type of person who does 90% of their shopping online, which means I am also the type of person who has a ton of packages to track, often with different carrier services. But I’ve found the perfect Dashboard Widget to make my life easier: “Delivery Status” by JuneCloud Software. This free Dashboard Widget will allow you to enter all of your package tracking numbers in, and view them quickly from your Dashboard. It supports all the major companies, FedEx, UPS, USPS, Amazon, and even Aramex. I’m one of those people that doesn’t really use the Dashboard though; In fact, I normally have it disabled entirely. But Delivery Status still has me covered. It has Growl integration, so I receive nice little pop up notifications when my package status has changed. There is also a portable version called “Delivery Status Touch,” available from the App store for your iPhone or iPod Touch (shuffle.to/deliverystatus). It’s $1.99 for a limited time. Why spend two bucks on a program that does the exact same thing as the desktop counterpart does for free? Because of sync. The Delivery Status widget and app can

While JuneCloud has done a spectacular job of polishing these applications, it’s not without some minor flaws. I use MobileMe to keep my Dashboard Widgets in Sync between five computers. Often I will end up with a bunch of “old” Delivery Status widgets cluttering up my dashboard, forcing me to go through and delete them all. To be fair, this is likely more a MobileMe issue than a DeliveryStatus issue. There is also a lack of item expiration. The Sync feature will hold on to items until you delete them by hand. Buy a Mac (and run Mac OS X on it)
Honestly, the single best way to enjoy a safe and secure computing environment is to choose wisely in the first place. And no other operating system is more worry-free than a properly maintained Mac OS X installation. Not that there aren’t some other good choices, or that there will never be any possible security threats to Macs. But Apple has done a great job of making Macs and Mac OS X very resistant to attacks, and works to prevent and repair dangers that may show up as they emerge. “Properly maintained” is no minor stipulation though. Security is never “done” or “finished”, but is a continuing process. Your secure Mac will need regular updates and proper usage to have a good chance of staying safe long into the future. But Mac OS X makes this relatively quite easy through Software Update and built-in security features.

Admin vs regular user account
The vast majority of things you do with your Mac can be done while using a normal user account: emailing, playing games, working with documents and pictures, etc. Administrator access is only a necessity for installing applications and changing major settings; staying logged into an admin account leaves your Mac open to accidental and unwelcome changes to your system. These can be easily avoided by simply using a normal user account for your main activities on your Mac. And doing so does not mean a hassle when you do need to install software or change preferences, as Mac OS X provides you with easy opportunities to allow temporary Administrator access for the cases when you need it. So, do yourself, and your Mac, a favor: if you have not done so already, set up a regular user login for yourself and use that as your main account for your Mac.

Pick a good password
“Mom”. It’s a wonderful word. But, it’s a terrible password. Sure, it’s easy to remember, but it could also be easy for someone to guess. (Especially with the help of a computer!) A good password will contain a mix of upper and lowercase letters, numbers and symbols, making it very hard to be guessed or randomly discovered. Take the time to create a good password, and then take the extra time to memorize it as well, so you don’t have to write it down anywhere. This small amount of work will pay off in much better security for your Mac. Also, see the Apple Doctor article in this issue for some more information on passwords.
With password for your Mac OS X account, passwords for web sites, PIN numbers for bank cards, and much more, we’re inundated with requests for user names, passwords and other access information on a frequent basis. Now we also have mobile devices such as Apple’s iPhone, which also requires user names and passwords. To keep track of all your access information and keep it in sync between your Mac and your iPhone or iPod touch, consider 1Password (shuffle. to/1password). It can save user names, passwords and other information you enter into forms on web sites. Better yet, it will also keep the same info both on your iPhone and your Mac.

Back up your data
Backup is a must, we all know that. But we also know that many, perhaps including yourself, never or rarely back up their information. The simplest thing you should do is make sure you make copies of the information on your Mac to some kind of media. Whether that is an external hard drive, DVDs, or something else doesn’t matter much. What matters is that you establish a routing in terms of your backup that you feel comfortable with and that you follow on a regular basis. A backup strategy is obviously no good unless you follow it. If you have an external hard drive available for backup purposes Apple’s Time Machine software is the obvious choice for backups, and a very good one. For more flexibilty in backups to a hard drive, consider using something like SuperDuper (shuffle.to/superduper) which can help you do regular and complete backups that can also be bootable for emergency purposes. When backing up to CD or DVD, you can, of course, simply create a burn folder in the Finder, drag and drop the items you want to backup and burn to a blank disc immediately. For more options and scheduling this type of operation, there are a number of sofware choices, including one that is free: Apple’s Backup app (shuffle.to/ applebackup), which you can read about in this issue. Especially if you have lots of unique and sensitive information you should really take backups off site once in a while. Imagine, God forbid, that your house or office burns down and all your backups are in the office building. Then what? Whatever way you do your backing up, take a copy of it to somewhere else once in a while, like to your home. At Shufflegazine we take one complete copy of all
our data off site once a week on a rotating basis. That way we don’t risk loosing more than one week’s worth of data. Another alternative to consider is online backup. There are more and more alternatives launched in this space ever week. Among these services we find JungleDisk (www.jungledisk.com), Mozy (www.mozy.com),Carbonite (www. carbonite.com), DropBox (www. getdropbox.com), and more. Unfortunately in the Middle East, internet connections are sometimes unreliable and upload speeds are slow, so be patient. At Shufflegazine we use JungleDisk and DropBox for a lot of online storage and backup. For example, our complete back archives of Indesign files, graphics and more for all old Shufflegazine issues are all stored online at Amazon S3 (aws.amazon.com/s3) using JungleDisk. This is in addition to backup copies in our office in Dubai.

Antivirus
Whether you should run any antivirus on your Mac running Mac OS X is a debate that rages on. A simple fact is that there is nowhere near the antivirus problem on the Mac platform compared to Windows. I think that much we can all agree with. We at Shufflegazine do not recommend that all Mac users, at this point, should install and run antivirus software, but that doesn’t mean there is anything wrong with you doing so. There are people in our editorial team who do run antivirus on all their Macs and there are others who don’t. In our estimate and experience there has not been a credible and widespread virus problem on Mac OS X that would lead us to recommend antivirus to all users. It would appear to us that if you work in an environment with many Windows computers there would be more reason to install antivirus. Not so much to protect your Mac, but so that
you don’t inadvertently pass on Windows viruses to other users. In terms of antivirus software, ClamXav (www.clamxav.com) is a very good, and free, choice. If you don’t mind spending a bit of money, Shufflegazine recommends Intego’s VirusBarrier (www.intego. com/virusbarrier). Although viruses on Macs are very rare, recently a “trojan” app- one that hides in another, trusted programhas been found to be distributed in pirated copies of iWork and Photoshop CS4. While not destructive to the infected computer, the trojan can use it as part of a “botnet”, a network of infected computers that are then used to attack Internet servers. Avoiding this trojan is easy: don’t install pirated software. Also, to prevent this software from installing or removing it and other possible malware from your Mac, install anti-virus software as instructed in this issue. Parental Controls
Even though the name is “parental controls” that doesn’t mean it can’t be used by anyone other than parents wanting to control what their kids do on the family Mac. The basic idea is that the administrative user controls what users of other accounts can and cannot do with the Mac. Should the users, for example, be able to run certain applications, chat with certain other users, send and receive email, use the Mac during certain hours, etc. Mac OS X comes with good parental controls built-in. You can control any standard or managed account in Mac OS X using Parental Controls. Using Parental Controls you can decide on the way Finder and Applications work; filter Content for specific words; control who can send messages through Mail and iChat; manage time limits for when the user can use the Mac; and log all activity taking place. The final step is to use Simple Finder, giving the user access to only the icons you allow them to access. If the built-in parental controls are not finegrained or extensive enough there are other solutions. We reviewed ContentBarrier (www.intego.com/ contentbarrier) in the April issue of Shufflegazine, and our conclusion was that not everyone will need what ContentBarrier has to offer, but it does offer much more than what’s built-in to Mac OS X.

Let’s get this straight right away: no amount of computer security can help you if people’s behavior is not also secure. This means that users should know how to behave with their computer and software in a way that minimizes, perhaps even removes, the risk of bad things happening. Consider this: many expert computer users don’t run antivirus software, firewalls, etc. because they know how to behave in a secure manner with their computer. We’re not saying we should all be computer security experts (If we did, we’d probably be writing for a Windows magazine.) but we’re saying that we should all keep in mind what we do and don’t do with our Macs. For example, don’t open suspicious emails and attachments, don’t download files from unknown web sites, don’t copy files from unknown sources like USB drives, etc. Eve on a Mac, you are less susceptible
to something happening than if you were running Windows, but you’re not totally removed from problems. Logical security has to do with whether an account is password protected, for example. Physical security has to do with whether people have physical access to a computer, it’s USB ports, etc. In most normal office environments considering who has physical access to computers is not something we really have to think about. But in some instances, where information really has to stay secure, locking up computers in special cabinets or locking optical drives and USB connections might be something to consider.

Password Protect Screensaver

It might seem like a small, even insignificant detail, but the fact is, enabling password protection on the screensaver can actually help youin a big way to keep your data secure. The idea is that when the screensaver on your Mac is activated after a number of minutes of inactivity, whoever wants to get back onto your Mac and use it has to know your password. Imagine you use a Mac in a shared environment like most offices. You leave your Mac to get a cup of coffee. After a few minutes the screensaver comes on. A colleague with not so pure motives walks by your Mac and wants to have a look at the report you’re writing, but when they try to use your Mac instead of the report they see the prompt for password. You enable this in “System Preferences” > “Security > “Require password to wake this computer from sleep or screen saver”. You should of course have a good password and set the screen saver to activate in a fairly short period of time: five minutes is better than an hour.

First of all, make sure the Mac OS X firewall is turned on (“System Preference” > “Security” >“Firewall”). The firewall is really software running on your Mac that monitors incoming traffic from the network, locally as well as from the Internet. If the firewall is on and properly configured, it will protect you from potential attacks from anyone or anything on the network trying to get into your Mac. For the Mac OS X firewall you will find three options. For most users, setting it to “Allow only essential services” is the best choice. If you want more control over what can connect to your Mac set the option for “Set access for specific services and applications” (you can add applications by clicking the plus sign). Only for short term testing should you leave it on “Allow all incoming connections”. One application that Shufflegazine recommends for all Mac users is Little Snitch (shuffle.to/littlesnitch). It’s a firewall of sorts, but it controls outgoing traffic, not incoming. The idea is that any software on your Mac that wants to connect out to the internet has to be approved by you. If you run Little Snitch, you’ll find out that most alerts you get from it are for applications that you know, and they’re perfectly okay, like Microsoft Word connecting to a Microsoft server to see if there is
an update available. Sometimes you’ll see requests from strange applications you’ve never heard of. In such cases we recommend putting the name of the application in Google and see what comes up. Most of the time it will be perfectly benign software, often UNIX command-line utilities, that do certain things in Mac OS X. But it may also be that something nasty has got onto your Mac and has tried to connect to somewhere, potentially copying itself to some other Mac. In this case, using something like Little Snitch might give you a chance to stop it.

Generally speaking, as we also mentioned above, be careful about what you download and where you download it from. It might tempting to download software for free from a Torrent site, but you never quite know what you’re getting. The software may look perfectly benign, and it might actually be that too, but there is a real risk it contains something nasty. And the simple fact is that if you download from a site you don’t know, you run the risk of endangering your Mac and your data. Safari comes with an option turned on as standard, which can be dangerous and all users should turn it off as soon as they can. If you go to “Safari” > “Preferences” > “General” > “Open ‘Safe’ Files after downloading”, you should make
sure that check box is unchecked. If this is on, it means that when you download certain file types, like Zip, DMG - anything that Safari deems “safe” – it will open then, meaning uncompress the Zip file, mount the DMG, etc. This might be convenient for users, but it’s also a potential security risk as a file might open and potentially cause harm.

Even for its small package, there’s plenty of power in the MacBook Air. With a Core 2 Duo processor running at speeds of 1.6GHz or 1.86GHz, it will suit most typical usage scenarios on the go.
It’s powered by the NVIDIA GeForce 9400M chipset, giving you up to four times the graphics performance compared to the previous generation of MacBook Air. If you want to you can connect the MacBook Air to an external display through a Mini DisplayPort.

This is an easy one, the MacBook Air comes with 2GB of RAM and you can’t upgrade it.
Communications
The MacBook Air has most of what you would need in terms of communications. It has the now-standard 802.11n Airport Extreme wireless networking, as well as Bluetooth 2.1+EDR. And if that isn’t enough, you can always plug the MacBook Air in to an Ethernet network, but you’ll have to buy a separate dongle for that.
Display and Graphics
This is also straight forward in the MacBook Air. It has a 13.3-inch LED display with 1280×800 pixels.
In terms of internal storage there are two options for the MacBook Air. You can have a 120GB 5400RPM hard drive or a 128GB SSD (Solid State Drive). The SSD adds a considerable cost to the price of the MacBook Air, but it should make it more rugged as it has no moving parts, and it should give you better speed and longer battery life.
Expandability
The only expandability is offered through the one USB 2.0 port available on the MacBook Air. Apple sells an optional external SuperDrive, but even without it you can install software over a network from another Mac or PC.

I’ve been using DropBox (www. getdropbox.com) for a few months now and I’ve been very happy with it. It offers a unique benefit of having online backup of data combined with having files accessible offline as well for when you don’t have internet connection. Initially DropBox offered just one level of accounts with 2GB space free. You can
still opt for that free account but I signed up for the $9.99 per month account, which gives me up to 50GB of storage space.
DropBox Folder
Basically, after signing up and installing DropBox, you have a folder on your Mac, which could be any folder you like or a special “DropBox” folder, which
syncs between computers (Mac, Windows, and Linux) and an online account. Make a change on one computer (or on the web) and as soon as the other computers connect the change will be cascaded to them all. And changes are often instantaneous; uploads and downloads seem to be very fast compared to many other services I’ve tried. Basically

it works very transparently and you don’t notice it working away in the background. I have five Macs syncing now with DropBox and a Windows PC as well. This sounds a bit like iDisk (part of MobileMe), right? And it is. But so far I can say DropBox works so much better than iDisk ever has. It’s faster, smoother, has fewer problems, and is totally cross platform in a way iDisk is not. And away from a computer I can access it on the web, which is a blessing in itself.
Public Files
And you can serve up files so others can get them too with DropBox, something I do a lot to share PDF files and more with others. In your DropBox there’s a folder called “Public Folder” and any file in there you can serve up to others. Right-click on the file and you get the public URL of that file. For example, there is a text file (shuffle.to/ dropboxtext) in my DropBox, a (shuffle.to/dropboxphoto) picture, and also a movie clip (shuffle.to/ dropboxmovie). So you could use DropBox for larger files – pictures, movies, Flash files, etc. – for your web sites.

How does it stack up against other similar services? It remains to be seen, but I’ve

just compared it to MobileMe, and I can give you my view of JungleDisk (www.jungledisk. com) and Mozy (www.mozy.com) as well. I liked the idea of Mozy and I did try it out for a while, but it just didn’t work very well. It said “preparing” for backup for hours and hours without really uploading anything. So I dropped it. I’ve used JungleDisk for quite some time now and I’m happy with it. DropBox makes backup of files a bit easier though than JungleDisks automatic backup. So what I’m thinking at the moment is I’ll keep using JungleDisk for the things I backup once in a while, things I want to store online but don’t have to sync between computers. And I’ll use DropBox for the files I’m working on at the moment, which is basically my Documents folder.
Wrapping Up
Finally, the verdict is: so far I love DropBox but it’s not perfect. I would like to be able to control which individual folders to sync to various computers. So, on one Mac I might want to sync all files and folders, on another Mac only some. That’s one thing I’ve discovered so far, but I’m sure there’ll be more. All in all though, DropBox is great and I highly recommend it to anyone looking for online storage of files.

Press the lever for the cover for the battery and hard drive compartment. The cover should pop up a little bit. Put your finger on the edge and gently take the cover off.

There is one screw holding the hard drive in place. Unscrew that, and remove the plastic brace that secures it.
Step 4
Grab the plastic tab sticking up from the side of the hard drive and pull up. Gently slide the other side of the drive out of the holder.

Once the drive is out of it’s holder, gently grab and nudge the SATA connector off from the drive. Then you can completely remove the drive.

Remove the four screws from the sides of the hard drive.

Insert the four screws into the new hard drive.

Gently attach the SATA connector to the new drive.

Slide the new drive into place, starting with the side that faces the front of the MacBook Pro. Make sure the SATA connector faces the right direction.

There are many different drives from many manufacturers to chose from. One good choice, the drive we used in this tutorial, is Western Digital 500GB Scorpio Blue 2.5 SATA II drive. You can find it on Amazon. com (shuffle.to/ wd500) currently for just under $100.

Put the cover back on and make sure the lever slides back into place.

Backup is may not already be installed on your Mac, but can be easily downloaded on the software Downloads area of Apple’s website. (shuffle.to/ )applebackup When you start Backup, you will be presented with several back-up options, ‘Plans’, for various types of tasks:
Home Folder
This Plan allows you to back up your entire Home folder to CD or DVD. While Time Machine will also include this in its overall backup, it’s a pretty good idea to make an extra copy this way for safety, especially if you have very many important files on your Mac. This plan can be done daily, monthly, or weekly, etc. Doing so less frequently will save on discs and still provide a good amount of protection for your files.
Personal Data & Settings
If you have MobileMe, this Plan provides a simple way to keep your contacts, calendars, notes and other settings safely backed up, and easy to restore. A nice “off-site” backup choice for an extra degree of protection in case to worst happens to your Mac.
iLife
Backup you pictures, movies and music to disc, for safekeeping. A nice way to keep your precious memories and rocking tunes safe.
iTunes Library
Same as above, but just for copying your playlists and music and movie purchases/imports to keep them safe. Both of the above, as with the Home Folder Plan, require you to choose between frequent backups and how quickly you go through discs.
Custom
Build your own Plan to backup what you want, when you want. You can quickly choose the files and folders to backup, the destination media, then set a schedule for the task.

” ضبط “تايم ماشين:درس Apple’s Time Machine software is a simple and powerful way to keep your Mac and all your personal Data backed up, and available for easy recovery if the unthinkable ever happens. An extra external USB or FireWire Hard drive is required for the backup. Once you plug the drive into your Mac, you will be asked if you want to use it for Time Machine Backups. Be warned that doing so will first completely erase the contents of the drive, so either start with a brand new one or choose a drive that does not contain anything you want to keep. Once the drive is set up, Time Machine will do backups automatically. The first one may take several hours, especially if you have a lot on your Mac, but subsequent backups will only backup files that have been modified since the last check, so they will go much more quickly. Recovering files is very easy. If you just need to recover a certain part of the files on from your Mac, open the Time Machine app, which will show you a Finder window and a series of windows behind it representing backup at previous dates. You can navigate to the backed up version of the folder that you want and click the Restore button. The files will be automatically copied back to your Mac.
Tweaking Time Machine
The problem with Time Machine is no matter great your hard drive capacity is, it can still run out of space quickly. Fortunately we can tweak Time Machine to save space. Here are two things you can do:

First: Do Not Back Up Everything With the Time Machine panel in System Preferences open, click on the Options button. Here you can specify what you don’t want to backup (what you want to exclude). For example, you might not want to backup the System, Library or the Applications directories. Or you may have large temporary video files in one particular directory that you don’t want to back up with Time Machine.
Second: Schedule the Backups to Your Preference Time Machine has a strict schedule. It basically starts backing up whenever it thinks it needs to, which can be pretty frequently. That’s convenient as it’s just taken care of but what about the times when I just don’t want to back up? Luckily, there is a free, simple application available called Time Machine Editor. Grab it from shuffle.to/ timemachineeditor. With Time Machine Editor, you will be able to define the Schedule interval; daily, weekly, monthly, and more.

OK, the danger is very, very remote at this point, but with a few very easy steps, you can do a lot to keep it safe for a long time to come. Viruses that target Macintosh computers have always been uncommon, and almost non-existent since the advent of Mac OS X, but thankfully there have long been dedicated Mac enthusiasts kindly providing virus scanners to guard against the advent of such; and some of the best virus scanners have been free. ClamXav is one such program. It is a graphic version of the open-source ClamAV anti-virus engine, created especially for Mac OS X, which can be downloaded at www.clamxav.com. As with most Mac OS X apps, set up and use is quite easy, as we’ll show you in this tutorial.
Download the appropriate version of the software for your version of Mac OS X. Once it is finished open the DMG file and drag ClamXav to the Applications folder. Since this is an application you will only need to use occasionally, you don’t necessarily need to keep it in the Dock.

Double click on ClamXav; the first thing it will do is to connect to the Internet to download the latest virus definitions, so that it knows what to look for when scanning your computer for infected files.

Scanning for viruses can take some time, so be patient. Generally you can keep on doing other things on your Mac while the scan is taking place, but it is best not to put too much load on it to avoid problems.

Once it has up-to-date definitions, ClamXav is ready to go. Choose a folder using the “Choose what to scan…” button. Your ‘Home’ folder is the most important too check and monitor, since that is where most new files will be downloaded to. Checking the System, Library and Applications folders is important as well. When you have chosen, click the “Start Scan” button.

In the unlikely event that ClamXav does find an infected file it will move it to a “quarantine” folder to keep it from doing any harm. Note the name of the file and the folder where it came from; if the file was associated with a particular application you will probably want to contact the product support for that app to determine how best to proceed with repairing it before further use.

Rather than running ClamXav manually it is usually preferable to have it run automatically at some time when you are not using your Mac. Open the Preferences and click on the “Schedule” tab to schedule regular automatic scans at such a time, perhaps when you are usually asleep or when your favorite show is on.

Getting Started
Basically the learning process is accomplished by typing a mixed-string of random characters. You can customize a character set at each of the 30 levels to control the learning process. You can also import texts from TextEdit, Mail or your web browser (e.g. Safari, Firefox) to practice on your favorite content. each session and gets updated every second; it is suitable for following the typing process making it good as a reference for teachers in typing classes. To start just put all your fingers as shown on the Drawer (the virtual keyboard). Your right thumb is on the “1” key on the right side and your left thumb in the “1” key on the left side and so forth. Now start typing, following the character bar indicator moving to right over each character. You should not remove your fingers from the keyboard. Each session provides two activity logs, in RTFD and in HTML format. By default, they are stored on the Desktop as “aTypeTrainer4Mac_Run_Log”. The RTFD log is very detailed and generated at the end of each session; it is suitable for printing and performance analysis. The HTML log is generated at the start of
To change the keyboard layout for typing in other languages (e.g. French, Arabic, etc) just switch to another keyboard layout in your Mac via “International” settings. aTypeTrainer4Mac will detect the change and asks you to switch to the selected keyboard layout.

I’m talking about cloning your Mac’s hard drive. Cloning a drive basically means making an identical copy of it. The application I’ve used for many years for this is called SuperDuper (shuffle.to/superduper) and although it’s available in a free version it’s well worth it to pay the $28. Carbon Copy Cloner (shuffle.to/ccc) is another good, free alternative.
Why Cloning?
Time Machine is a great way to back up, but you can’t boot from an external Time Machine backup hard drive. If you clone your Mac’s hard drive you make an exact copy of it. Then, if something happens to your Mac’s drive, you can still boot the Mac from the external, cloned drive.

Start SuperDuper.

Select your Mac’s internal hard drive in the left drop down menu.
This tutorial is about cloning your Mac’s hard drive. Cloning a drive basically means making an identical copy of it.

Select your external hard drive in the right drop down menu.
Make sure “Backup – all files” is selected in the “using” drop down menu.
Important note
In this quick tutorial we’ll clone the internal startup hard drive of a Mac to an external hard drive. Since we’ll wipe the external drive, make sure you have nothing on it you need to save.

Click the “Copy Now” button. It may ask you for your admin account login.

Confirm that you want to copy by clicking the “Copy” button.

SuperDuper will now make an exact copy of the internal hard drive to the external drive.
