With the global credit crunch, people are trying to be more innovative in the way they conduct their business. Based on radio talk shows and newspapers, it seems the sector hit worst by this crisis is the construction and property industries. This of course channels down to retail stores, such as the many large malls and others in this region. They don’t sell as much therefore they are not able to pay the rent and an obvious reaction is to lay employees off. Also for consumers this means a change. Many have less money in their pockets, and what they do have they have to spend more wisely and also save more of it. Looking at alternatives, I think online services will catch on in our market like they’ve not done so far. Such business models have been struggling to catch on until now. Looking at the giants in retail, such as Virgin Store, popping up in every Mega Arcade, they even closed down their digital store in September 2007, way ahead of the wave. Even we here at Shufflegazine look at the web more and more to spread our content to readers and to interact with you.

With individuals being squeezed, new motivations or strategies usually emerge for businesses. Recently we just saw bold moves from Nokia as well as Du, with their online music stores. They both carry Arabic music including a large Khaleeji selection, something that is not matched by the iTunes Store. This will give a big boost to the current market situation, plus the local and Middle East musicians and artists will experience a new way of conducting business.

This bring us to the issue that Apple has no iTunes Store for our region in terms of music, TV and movies. Sure, in the UAE we’re lucky to have an App Store but that’s still of limited use for your iPhone, iPod, Mac, and Apple TV. Now that the iPhone is coming to the UAE and KSA, it’s about time that Apple brings a full iTunes Store to us so that we can enjoy all the content there. This is also appropriate considering the difficult financial circumstances. Giving consumers a choice is a good thing and now we need it more than ever.

iMac
Apple was busy in March, updating not only their top of the line Mac Pro desktop computer, but also the entire line of consumer desktops, including Mac mini and iMac. The 24-inch iMac is now cheaper than before, with more memory and power. The top speed iMac, at 3.06GHz, comes with up to 1TB hard drive and fast graphics cards from NVIDIA or ATI. Apple didn’t fundamentally change the iMac concept but it’s a very nice bump in specifications. They did however include a Mini DisplayPort and an additional USB port but dropped FireWire 400.

The Mac mini also received a bump in specification. Still inside the same case as before the two main differences on the outside is that the mini now has five USB ports and a Mini DisplayPort. You have a selection of up to 2.26GHz processors, 320GB hard drive and you can install up to 4GB RAM in the revised Mac mini. Like Apple’s MacBook notebook the mini features NVIDIA GeForce 9400M integrated graphics with up to five times the performance of the previous configuration, according to Apple.

The new Mac Pro runs on the improved Intel “Nehalem” Xeon processors and new architecture delivering double the performance of the previous systems. With speeds of up to 2.93GHz in an eight-core configuration, a high performance NVIDIA GeForce GT120 or optional ATI Radeon HD 4870 graphics card, it should deliver plenty of power for the most demanding users. Apple also boosted memory specifications to a maximum 32GB of 1066MHz DDR3 ECC memory. As before there is room for up to four internal Serial ATA hard drives. The new model has Mini DisplayPort and DVI port to drive most common monitors including Apple’s new 24-inch Cinema Display.
New iPod shuffle
Apple has introduced really small and cool revised model of iPod shuffle. As with previous iPod shuffle models the new one does not have a display. There is only one control for switching between shuffle (random) mode and repeat mode, and turning it off. In addition there’s only a belt clip and the headphone jack, that’s it. The new model is 4GB and you control it via the button on the earbud cord. It speaks back to you concerning what’s playing, whether it’s running out of battery, etc; this feature, called VoiceOver, speaks 14 languages, not including Arabic.

Apple Announced iPhone Software 3.0 With MMS, Copy-Paste Coming “This Summer” من نظام تشغيل اآلي فون3.0 آبل أعلنت عن وصول النسخة «هذا الصيف» وبها خاصية الرسائل المصورة والنسخ واللصق Apple presented the upcoming version 3.0 of the iPhone Operating System at a special event on March 17, 2009. With speculation growing ever more intense about what Apple would add in the future, fans and developers alike should be very satisfied with the news of what is coming. Apple started off by saying that iPhone is now sold in 80 countries around the world; they’ve passed the goal of 10 million iPhones sold, and reached sales of 13.7 million devices. Apple today has over 25,000 apps in the iTunes App Store, and over 800 million apps have been downloaded, many purchased, in the period since the start, about eight months now. Concerning the news for iPhone, Apple said the 3.0 release is coming “this summer” without being more specific than that. One of the main new additions is in-app purchases. Backed by the App Store processing, developers can now build in functionality for customers making purchases from within their app. This could be a magazine selling issues from within the app, a player in a game buying new weapons and upgrades, etc. Heavily featured in demos, Apple surely is betting big on this revenue-driver. As announced already last year, Apple is now saying they will
bring push notification to iPhone. They still won’t put in background processing but instead users can get notifications of messages arriving and other events through the iPhone’s connection to Apple’s servers. This, according to Apple, saves battery life and network bandwidth.
The biggest new features for iPhone OS 3.0 are Copy/Paste and MMS. Copy/Paste is implemented through a clever user interface; double tap on a word to select it and a bubble appears with the copy, paste, cut commands. Copy/ Paste works in all applications including Safari for HTML content. MMS is implemented in a new app called Messages, which will allow you to send photos, vcards, audio files, and your location over MMS. You will also be able to forward and delete multiple messages. In other areas Apple is implementing Spotlight for iPhone, turn-by-turn navigation, stereo Bluetooth A2DP support, tethering, and peer to peer connectivity over Bluetooth.
What was missing from the announcements was the expected updated support for more languages, including Arabic. It read, that 8GB and 16GB black and white 3G iPhone would go on sale on February 22nd. The two models of iPhone would be available for sale only after signing a 12-month contract on one of the four specific plans for each model. It was also later announced that the existing iPhone owners will not be eligible for those plans. Offering monthly “package plans” is not new to Etisalat. They are already offering a number of all, or nearly all inclusive packages for the Blackberry smartphone. However, this time it was different. Two different iPhone models, yet eight different prices. Monthly charges varying from AED199 to AED643. That really confused and generally turned off people who just could not wait to get their hands on glossy black or stunningly shiny white iPhones. Potential iPhone owners simply

left Etisalat’s booths confused. Existing iPhone users who wanted to jump over from the dark side and become genuine iPhones began to ask themselves one simple question: “Is it worth it...?”. And the answer is: “It depends”. I think it is safe to say that AED2646 for the 8GB and AED3090 for the 16GB iPhones are the “full” prices of the device. Lets quickly dissect the Postpaid Plan 1. AED199 will get you 125 local talk time minutes, 125 locally sent SMS messages and 500MB of data per month. A quick 101 phone call to Etisalat and you will find out that 1 min of local talk time cost AED0.30 and 1 SMS cost AED0.18 to send locally. That means that 125 minutes and 125
SMSs will cost you exactly AED60 regardless if you are on Wasel or regular non-iPhone postpaid plan. Subtract AED60 for 125 minutes and 125 SMSs from the iPhone Postpaid Plan 1, and you are left with AED139 for 500MB data. If you follow my train of thought you will realize that the so called “plans” with included minutes, SMS messages and data can be simply called “better data plans”. Plan 2 is 500MB for AED139. Plan 3 is 1000MB for AED189 and Plan 4 is 2000MB for AED219. Just remember that rental charges per month include the partial payment for the iPhone (if you have not chosen Plan 1), minutes, SMS messages and data. And why better? Let’s see. You can clearly see that the cost per MB of data transfer with iPhone monthly plans is much lower than with the optional data plans. Those are the plans that the current grey market iPhone users are subscribed to if they want to use iPhone as it was meant to be used. I will strengthen this view even further. If you are looking to buy an iPhone from non-Etisalat source and open a GSM Postpaid account, you will be charged AED125 to register the account and another AED20 to use it monthly. With Wasel prepaid account it would be AED165 to register, and AED100 per year to use, so you can subtract another AED30 and AED22 respectably from the monthly data cost calculations.
If you already have an iPhone and don’t use over 50MB of data, there really is no financial point to switch to Etisalat’s iPhone. If you do and want security and tech support from Etisalat, maybe it is that time to list your grey import iPhone on Souq.com or sell it to your neighbor and head to the nearest Etisalat shop. If you don’t have one, but still want it, get it through Etisalat instead of some grey import source. You get best deal on data and warranty and support. The purpose of this article was not to try to convince you to buy or not buy an iPhone. New Illuminated Keyboard From Logitech

Safari 4 Public Beta النسخة التجريبية للجمهور4سفاري A public beta version of Apple’s Safari web browser for both Mac OS X and Windows was released in early March. The two most obvious changes/additions when starting up the new Safari version 4 is the “Top Sites” feature and the fact that tabs have been moved to the top of the window. A rather interesting addition to the new Safari is the inclusion of Cover Flow for “flipping through” you bookmarks and history. With this release Apple is also touting major improvements in Safari’s rendering routines, dubbing them “Nitro Engine”, and claiming that it can render pages three times faster than other browsers and vastly improve JavaScript implementation.

Music is a very important part of my life; I listen to it almost all the time while working, driving my car, setting at home till the time I go to bed. It helps me to reduce the tension caused by the crowded streets, work and life’s problems in general. I have been collecting music and songs since high school. Back then, I was passionate about gathering various types of music from different Arab countries with different accents, in addition to music from the west. My problem was how to classify all this music in good order, so that finding songs or tracks could be easily done.
writing this article and It was a big surprise to me when I learnt that iTunes is available for both Mac and PC. All my Apple friends confirmed to me that iTunes is the solution of my problem. I learned how to import my music from my MacBook and my CDs, and how to create play lists. And for sure I will subscribe to podcasts as much as I can, especially the tutorial ones. One day a friend of mine gave me an iPod touch to try it for a while. Once I started to use the touch, the first thing that drew my attention was the high response of the touch screen and the sleek design, but later on I was fascinated by way this device can organize and display music. I was able to go through my tracks and choose any one of them so easily.
Until this moment, my life was iTunes-less, I just started exploring this part of the Apple world a couple of days before
Now that iPod and iTunes have provided me with an effective solution to my problem, I will be able to take my music with me everywhere. All my tracks are organized perfectly and with one click I can play any song I want. It is a good feeling when you find something you have been looking for, thank god that I have found mine!

They didn't really explain why it's so great, but I don't want to pay that much for something I don't know if I need. Are there any alternatives to MobileMe? A: Sure, but not all of them are free and there is no one solution that does everything that MobileMe does; you have to put together your own "package". You can get FoxMarks (http://www.foxmarks.com/) for syncing FireFox bookmarks between computers. GMail (http://gmail.com) is a very good, and free, alternative as far as email goes. If you don't mind paying for email, FastMail (http://www.fastmail.fm) is a great service. And for sharing files you can go with something like DropBox (http://www.getdropbox.com) or why not Amazon S3 (http://aws.amazon. com/s3/) and JungleDisk (http:// www.jungledisk.com). Q: I was asked to download a movie file by a friend. It ends in AVI and I can download it ok to my Mac but when I try to play it with QuickTime I hear sound but the picture is just blank. What can I do? A: It's an issue of having the right CODEC. A CODEC is basically something that is used when creating and saving a movie file that decides what format it will be in. Someone watching that movie file will also have to have the same CODEC to view it. Most certainly you don't have the right CODEC for that video. I'd suggest you download
VLC (http://www.videolan.org/vlc/), it's free and it plays almost every video format. Also check out Perian. (http://perian.org) Q: I was having a problem with Entourge and I re-installed Office. Now Entourage is not opening with a message the "identity runs on a newer version". I tried downloading the updates but after completing the downloads it is not installing, with a message that I do not have the version to allow these updates to install. A: I don't really use Entourage myself. But from the problem you describe, I'd recommend you copy and backup your Office identity (in your Documents folder), which includes all your Entourage settings, emails, etc. Then remove Office completely and install it again. Update to latest version before you set up any account in Entourage, that should take care of the problem.
Q: We just moved to Dubai and tried this iZone connection by Etisalat in a mall, but couldn't get it to work. It's not Mac compatible or? A: What web browser did you use to sign in to the iZone service? I know in the past it's not always worked with all browsers. Especially Safari has been a problem. I would try with a different browser, in my experience FireFox works just fine. Update: In the February 2009 issue we had a question from a reader who was having problems ejecting a flash drive because it said it had open files on it. Hassnain Chagani wrote us to say that he has successfully used "What's Keeping Me?" from HAMSoft Engineering to solve this problem. (http://tinyurl.com/55t28r). Thanks for the tip, Hassnain.

مستخدم ويندوز غشاش Yes, it’s true. I’m a Windows cheater. I mean my main computers are all Macs, but I do on occasion run Windows. That’s the situation for many of you, I suspect, and there’s nothing wrong with it. The simple fact is that we live in a Windows world, and perhaps even more so here in the Middle East compared to other parts of the world. Bill Gates should be tickled to death about the dominance here of his operating system. Such is the ignorance about the alternatives, Mac as well as Linux, that they rarely even make it into the equation when companies and organizations evaluate new IT solutions. It is because of this that our work is more needed and important than ever. We need to educate the market, individual consumers as well as corporations, about the benefits and characteristics of all Apple products, not just the Mac. I’m not saying that Apple will always come up as the favored and most beneficial alternative but at least it will have been given a fair chance, something that happens too rarely as the situation is now, I fear. With the publication of the first article on Shufflegazine.com by Venkatesh Sridhar, which evaluated Mac OS X Server solution compared to Windows Server, I personally found a renewed interest in issues of Macs in corporate environments. During the last few months, CENTIMETERCUBE, the publisher of Shufflegazine has
April ‘09 www.shufflegazine.com carefully planned the move to a new office and I’ve been a part of that planning, primarily in terms of IT and telecommunications. And since CENTIMETERCUBE is a mixed office with both Macs and PCs any solution selected has to fit both environments. This is true for printing, file sharing, backup and more. It does create more work and an increased cost to have a mixed environment, that’s true. But the fact is that Macs and Windows PCs can happily co-exist in the same corporate environment if the right technologies are selected. I’d argue that a homogeneous Maconly solution is a better choice in most cases but that’s not always possible due to different reasons. That’s my confession for this time, that I do cheat with Windows once in a while. I run it on my Mac Pro for gaming, web development and other purposes, but I do also have to look after PCs at
CENTIMETERCUBE. I’m fortunate to have a long history with both Macs and PCs to have a balanced view of where they both fit in corporations. iPhone is the First Recession Proof Product

اآلي فون هو أول هاتف ذو وقاية ضد األزمات االقتصادية بن مجاهد I often get told that the iPhone can't do this, iPhone can't do that, iPhone is not ready for enterprise, iPhone will loose to Android and the recession, etc. One day I got fed up and here is why: The iPhone is built around what is going to be for a very long time a platform of Bluetooth, GSM, Edge, 3G, Wi-Fi components. It's is not expected that the industry will change this common set of communication features anytime soon. We peaked guys, deal with it. Unless some mad scientist invents something else. This set of features is now and for a long time going to be the standard. This is it. The designers of iPhone created what is virtually an upgrade proof phone by creating a phone with only one button, and the rest is a gorgeous screen that displays whatever type of phone Apple wants the iPhone to be. Owners of iPhones don't have to worry about the next keyboard being too big or too small, the screen being too bright or too dim. They know their iPhone can display everything through that wonderful screen which serves as screen, keyboard, and mouse. The implications of this are as follows. Apple can software upgrade the entire phone without having to roll out a new iPhone hardware or a new design. There is no C902 and C905 or an N95 followed by an N97.
They standardized the form factor and virtualized what we know as a phone. Apple can (but is unlikely to) change the way the OS works at will, and I'm not just talking about icons and themes here. Heck, you could even turn the iPhone into a Windows mobile phone if you're into torture. But here is the real reason why the iPhone was a master stroke in product design and is probably the only phone that is recession and future proof; the common hardware of the iPhone is getting cheaper by the day. Look at the 2MP camera, the processor, the storage. This means Apple can either choose to make higher margins on each phone it sells, or reduce the price to compete with any competitor to the iPhone while maintaining the same margins. In times of recession, people don't buy new phones, the iPhone today is not expensive and it can double up as a portable media player, netbook, Kindle and even a notebook if you get used to typing on the iPhone screen. For people that can afford the iPhone at $299, it's the best buy out there in the market. And combine this with the best user experience on the market and you have a winner. The interface on iPhone is suberb, if not magical, and it can be changed on a whim, to gesture based or swipe based depending on what the software tells it. Speaking of Amazon's Kindle, mark my words, they will develop a Kindle app for the iPhone, and soon. Apple has struck gold with the iTunes Store, and will continue to strike
gold with the App Store where most applications that add a missing feature to an already excellent phone cost no more than $1 or $2. In times like these impulsive micro purchases are the next growth area. So before you rag about iPhone versus Blackberry versus Android, ask yourself this: Which phone on the market has a hardware platform that is good enough for at least three years? iPhone. Which phone offers its owners the ability to skin, change look and feel or completely make it another type of phone by hacking the firmware? iPhone. Which phone has already won the car war and the home theater war? iPhone. There are more cars and home theaters with iPhone docks than anything else. In fact, the day my not be far away where your iPhone or similar product becomes the hub of your computing life, but that is for another article. Which phone can improve its capabilities almost infinitly using software upgrades? iPhone. In fact, I don't think it would be long before we see DVORAK one handed keyboards on the iPhone, it's that easy to change the iPhone. For other manufacturers، they have to build a new phone for just adding this feature. So to summarize, the iPhone is the only recession proof phone out there. Really, it's probably the most recession proof product ever made. Yes, no cut and paste; yes, no connectivity to other non Apple products; but we need cut and paste today like we needed floppies five years ago. Apple knows better. Or maybe not. Apple, firmware 3.0 should have cut and paste, please.

Every month a company launches a new phone and positions it to be the “iPhone killer”. Shortly after we attend the eulogy of another martyr that the iPhone has ruthlessly slain. Without a doubt the iPhone changed the mobile phone arena. Apple showed phone manufacturers that a phone is not only the sum of the technical characteristics, indeed that a phone can be more than the sum of the parts that make it. The iPhone, despite its success, has many shortcomings. And its fans a have a very long wish list for it; MMS, copy and paste, Bluetooth transfers, GPS turn by turn directions, the list goes on and on. And in spite of these shortcomings, Apple can’t make enough of them to meet the demand. And people are patiently waiting for Apple, a patience that no other phone manufacturer would be lavished with. This is because the iPhone is more than the components that make it: the iPhone is the software the glues it all together. The iPhone is iTunes that makes connecting to your computer a simple no-brainer; the iPhone is the online browsing that for once is not a pain; and the iPhone is the iTunes Store that makes the iPhone more than a phone. When rumors that Apple was working on an iPhone surfaced, many people thought it would fail and people still think it'll fail. But
everyone knew that it would leave its mark even if it did fail. And everyone was watching closely. And leave its mark it certainly has. The coming of the iPhone ranks very high on the list of milestones of mobile technology. So the question is this: “Why isn’t anybody trying to kill the Mac?” If Apple was able to revolutionize the mobile phone market, and the music player market, why can’t it do the same for the computer market? The fact is, it did. Back in 1984 Apple launched the first Mac. And it showed the world what computers could really do. But Apple failed to reap the benefits of that revolution. The years went by, and Apple was struggling to stay alive. Microsoft, on the other hand, was having a field day. They scooped up market share like they owned the place. Fast forward to 1997 and Apple is doing what it does best, which is revolutionizing. But this time it was too late. Microsoft, and all the others, learned how to do it right. They had ample time to get the formula somewhat right, and enough time to get people and businesses used to it. So when Apple came up with Mac OS X people said “Wow, that is very nice” and then went back to their PCs. The fact is, the Mac is a great product. But the difference between the PC is not enough for most people to switch. The obstacles of switching are higher

than the benefits for many people. The iPhone, on the other hand, is entering a market that hasn’t been revolutionized yet. And the barriers to switching are low. People switch phones all the time. So the benefits are way higher than the barriers. So now the Mac is content to live in its little niche of the market with its Mac-head fans, while Windows is content with its +90% market share with its viruses and malware to keep it company. So, we can sleep peacefully tonight knowing that there isn’t a contract on the Mac’s head. And there won’t be for some time.

“People aren’t hearing all the music,” says Dr Dre on the Beats web site, and he is probably right. Whether the Beats headphones that wear his name will bring all the music to the people is a different question all together though. Selecting the right headphones is not an easy task. You want great sound, they should be comfortable, reliable, durable, as well as affordable. In most of those categories the Beats score high. Let’s get to the most important part first: these headphones make music sound amazing. As you would expect the bass can really make your head thump but also the higher notes really play well and you feel like you can make out new aspects of music you didn’t hear before. Compared to my Bose QuietComfort 2 headphones I’d say the Beats make music sound better. On the other hand the Bose headphones are better at reducing out noise from the surroundings. Although the Beats are noise reducing, they don’t take out as much of the surrounding sounds as we might have hoped. Besides the great sound, the Beats have one other very nice aspect to them and that is the iPhone remote control. They come with a special cable, which has on it a small click control for answering

Since so many of us have iPhones today, even though we may not have bought them from Etisalat, having iPhone compatible headsets like the Beats to choose from is great. It should be pointed out that like most other headphones you need an adapter to use the Beats with the first generation iPhone. The noise reducing capability demands power, so the Beats requires to batteries, cleverly placed in the left ear piece. And unfortunately, the Beats seem to go through batteries a lot faster than my Bose headphones. However, I find the Beats to be comfortable to wear, they cover my years pretty much completely and the ear pads are soft and make a nice close fit to the head and ears. So is it all good with the Beats? Well, not quite. The only thing, and it’s minor, that I can complain about is that they’re pretty bulky. You can fold them up and they come with a handy case for transportation, but they take up a lot of space on your head as well as folded up. And while on the subject, what was Monster thinking with the giant box the Beats come in? Talk about waste of packing material. Shame on you! In conclusion, the Beats deliver excellent sound for anyone, whether it’s the suitwearing director, heading to the board room, or the styleconscious kid on the street. Perhaps the style is more suitable for the street, but all users would get equal satisfaction from the sound.

Logitech is on a roll with “omnidirectional acoustics” these days and this is one of their latest offerings. Basically it means you’ll hear the sound like it’s coming from many directions giving you a richer listening experience. You dock your iPhone or iPod on the top and play music through the speakers. There, we’ve now covered the functionality. The sound coming out of these relatively small speakers is great, but I’m not happy that there is no support for the docked device. Dock an iPhone or iPod classic and you’ll be a bit nervous that it might fall over or even break the dock connection. That’s poor engineering Logitech. What is good is that these speakers can run on AC power or with batteries. This means they can be a great little party machine. There is also a wireless remote control included, with which you can change volume, play, pause, fast forward, rewind, and a few other things. But why not offer full iPod click-wheel functionality, Logitech? That annoys me a lot when I can’t go through playlists with the remote and instead have to reach over to the iPhone or iPod and do it. In conclusion, these Logitech speakers offer very nice sound, but concerns about the design of the dock and functionality of the remote takes off a few points from what could have been full marks.

At first glance these Logitech iPhone and iPod speakers may not be much different than others on the market. Take a closer look and you’ll see they are pretty clever in different ways. The basic functionality is pretty simple: you dock your iPod or iPhone, set the time you want to wake up, and you can wake up to your favorite music. If you don’t want to wake up right away, just wave your hand in front of the speakers and they will snooze. You read it right, just move your hand over them. Same with operation at night. It will light up all the controls just by waving your hand over them, and they will dim once you’re done. That’s pretty clever. Included are attachments for all different iPod and iPhone models. Obviously, of major importance is the sound, and these speakers produce great sound. You can comfortably wake up to whatever tunes you select, or radio if you so like, and hear all the nuances of the music. The display is easy to read with high contrast and big digits. Often these devices are complicated to master with lots of buttons and there are lots of buttons here too but they are relatively easy to understand. Logitech has done a good job in that department. My verdict is this: I’m getting these speakers to put in our bedroom. Then I’ll put my iPhone in there at night to charge and we can wake up to our favorite music.

It’s a pretty little thing, this case, made of quality leather, and well constructed. Besides being stylish it’s quite functional too, providing good protection with a flip cover that is secured with a buttoned tab to safeguard the screen when not in use. The cover can also be fastened open to allow the case to serve as a stand for the Touch when put on its side, perfect for watching videos hands-free. The button on the case we tried didn’t always snap in place securely at first when put in stand position, but eventually stayed put. There is a small pocket inside that will hold a few cards. The case does not have a belt clip or tether, so it’s pretty much only meant for sticking into your purse or pocket. But other than that, this model offers good functionality along with great style.

I visited the Psyclops stand at Macworld in January, and their cases struck me as very imaginative and different from anything else I had seen before. Basically they are silicone protective skin cases for iPod nanos (third and fourth generation) that are very colorful and each style of case represents a different character that kids can relate to. The cases in themselves are not that spectacular, indeed they are in basic function not different from any other skins you can buy, many of them cheaper. What makes them different is how they tie in to the Psyclops web site. With each case comes a unique code with which a parent can set up an account for their child on the Psyclopshq.com web site. With that account the child can log in, create their character, customize it with a cool look, create music in a simple Garageband-like interface, put together groovy dance move and more. Their character, music, and dance moves can then be put in a music video that they can then share with their friends. The web interface could be a bit more exciting and easy to use but kids will pick it up very quickly, I’m sure. Psyclops says this is aimed at 8-14 year olds; I would say it’s probably more appropriate for the lower end of that segment. The only downside I can think if is that the cases are only for the iPod nano. But then, would you really want your 10-year old running around with an iPod classic or touch? I didn’t think so.

PulpMotion, now out in version 2.1 from French company AquaFadas, may not be the best known software for creating slide shows on your Mac, but it is arguably the coolest. It’s kind of a one-trick pony, meaning it does just one thing: create slideshows from photos, video and audio; but it does that one thing very well. In a very user friendly, iMovie-like interface you drag your photos, audio, or movies from a media browser onto a sort of timeline. And that at the heart is what PulpMotion is about. It comes with a lot of very cool looking templates. Think iDVD templates and you get the idea. Drag the media in place and PulpMotion does the rest. You can export your slideshow in any number of ways, including screensaver and standalone app. PulpMotion is a one-trick pony, but the pony is darn good at doing that one trick.

In such situations Intego’s ContentBarrier X5 is an alternative you should take a look at. You get better control over what users can do in terms of what applications they can run, what web sites they can visit, what results they can get with web searches, etc. As is my experience with other Intego software, ContentBarrier X5 sits nicely in the background without taking up too much memory or processor power. It’s an application full of functionality but it’s more than most users need and might also be tough for some to really comprehend. And of course in the UAE and other countries the government is already controlling internet access, thereby reducing the need for something like ContentBarrier.

As a geeky girl- excuse me ‘geeky lady’- it’s hard to find a bag for my MacBook that is both stylish and functional. You guys wouldn’t understand this but we ladies look for different things than you do in a bag. That why I was excited to get an Echo MacBook case from Lexie Barnes to review. They sent me the Pacifica design case, and after a few weeks of daily use I’m ready to report to you what I think. The case has two main compartments closed off by zippers. One is for your notebook and it’s well padded on all sides so it should keep your valuable Mac safe. The other compartment is for accessories or other items. I often carry a spare MacBook charger, a notebook and some pens in the second compartment. Also in the second compartment has a few pockets inside for small bits and pieces, like lipstick and things. A pocket on the outside can contain few pieces of paper or something small. That outside pocket closes only with a small piece of velcro though. Personally, I’d rather see that closed off with another zipper so the content would be really secured, even if the bag would turn upside down.
With all this stuff in the bag it gets rather heavy but the padded shoulder strap makes it comfortable to carry. The two carry handles are a welcome alternative to the shoulder strap but I wish that Lexie Barnes had made them a bit more comfortable. When I have lots to carry they cut into my hands a bit. The Echo is available in three designs and three sizes. In designs the choices are the yellow and green Utopia, the blue Pacifica, and the purple and red Diablo. You can get the echo in sizes for the MacBook and both sizes of MacBook Pro. I really think the designs stand out in the selection of bags I’ve seen in Dubai and I wish Lexie Barnes would get distribution here. They have a few details they could improve on but the Echo suits my needs very well right now and I highly recommend it to other geeky ladies.

When it comes to finding the perfect case for my iPhone 3G I’m on a never-ending quest, it seems. I’ve come a step closer to iPhone case nirvana though with the iGlaze 3G. The sample Moshi sent us has ended up on Crystal’s iPhone though, so I’ll have to order my own, I guess. What makes the iGlaze 3G different from any other case I’ve seen is how thin it is. Once it’s on you hardly notice there is something attached to the iPhone. It only adds a millimeter or two to the back and sides of the device. It’s coated in a rubberized material so it’s non-slippery and matte. Although it comes with a screen protector, it doesn’t offer much protection to the front of the iPhone and that’s the only downside I can find. The price is decent so why not order one of each color and mix and match with your clothes and your mood that particular day?

We did experience a few what appeared to be bugs during our testing. The scanning software would unexpectedly quit at times and other times it wouldn’t start, the icon just kept bouncing in the Dock. We hope these are either isolated incidents and that they’ll be fixed in the future. Also we did try to scan business cards with Arabic on them but the software is clearly not able to understand Arabic, at least not in this version of the software. We all know how important business cards are in the business world in the Middle East. It’s almost like you have to exchange business cards before you get introduced and shake hands. And business card information is critical to many people’s work, but the volume of business cards we deal with is unrealistic. Imagine typing in the information from all the business cards you receive every week into a database or something? For most of us that’s unfeasible. The CardScan is a small device that connects to the Mac via USB cable. There’s no need for an AC adapter as it is powered through the USB connection. Once the scanner is ready you just start up the software and push a business card into the slot on the scanner. On average I’d say it takes a card 3-5 seconds to scan. Once finished, the scanned card shows up on the Mac’s screen and the software will interpret the information on the card. For cards with high contrast the accuracy is pretty good. On the 50 or so cards I tried, I had to make changes on all but two and major changes on about 15 of them. The process works well on traditional, simple, some would say boring cards, and less well an anything with graphics, color, unusual fonts, etc. Errors can be of two kinds: either where a word or name is misinterpreted (“Magnus” is read as “Magnos”) or where the software doesn’t interpret a piece of information as the right type (it reads telephone as fax). So you’ll have to clean up errors but that’s typically very quickly done and I didn’t find it to be a problem. Once scanned and corrected the cards can be synchronized with Address Book, which is the easiest way to get them onto some further use. Since Address Book syncs further with various

Your iPod can carry more than just media and games. While your iPod is hooked up to your Mac, go to it’s information screen in iTunes and make sure that “Enable disk use” is checked. There are several apps for iPod touch 2G that allow you to make VOIP calls, including TruPhone, Fring, and SipPhone. Remember, these all require a 2nd generation iPod touch, iPhone compatible earphones with a microphone and accounts with their related VOIP services. Performance
Even though the Mac mini is very small, it’s no slouch when it comes to performance. With a 2GHz or 2.26GHz Intel Core 2 Duo processor it will take on most tasks with ease. Don’t expect to do heavy 3D rendering quickly on the mini though.
Memory
The Mac mini comes with 1GB or 2GB standard RAM and it can be expanded to 4GB.
Communications
The mini is well equipped with 10/100/1000BASE-T Gigabit Ethernet, 54-Mbps AirPort Extreme wireless networking (802.11n), and Bluetooth 2.1+EDR. You can also get Apple’s optional external Apple USB Modem if you need to connect to phone line.
Display and Graphics
The mini uses similar integrated graphics to the MacBook. NVIDIA 9400M integrated graphics is not for those who desire to play the latest video games but it works very nicely as a media center. It also works well for many family-oriented games and applications. You connect external display via Mini DisplayPort.
Storage
The Mac mini comes with hard disks of 120GB or 320GB. SuperDrive is standard for storage and backup.
Expandability
The Mac mini is probably the least expandable Mac, notebooks including. It’s not really expandable internally, which is understandable due to its size. Basically all you can do is expand by one of the five USB ports or the FireWire 800 port.

accounts on a shared server, or have a dedicated server just to you. They recommend a shared server account for up to 50 users and a dedicated server for anything beyond that. For CENTIMETERCUBE we opted to go with an initial account of 25users, which covers what we need today.
Plans
The cost of the plans at Inftek are very reasonable. Kerio hosting on a shared server cost $5.99 per month per user, which gives you 2GB space per user. If you need to you can always upgrade space and number of users for additional fees. The dedicated server option, which means you get a computer to run Kerio on just for you, starts at around $150 depending on options selected.
Email and Collaboration
Kerio (http://www.kerio.com/) is an alternative to Microsoft Exchange. Exchange is arguably the market leader in corporate email and collaboration software but it’s by no means the only solution available. You can either buy a license of Kerio and run it on your own server, or you can find a company hosting Kerio for you.
Inftek (http://www.inftekhosting. com) is one such company and it’s the company CENTIMETERCUBE, publisher of Shufflegazine, decided to go with when we were looking for a new email solution.
Hosted or Dedicated
With Inftek you can chose between hosting your Kerio email
Although email is the main reason to look at a solution like this you also get shared calendars, contacts and more. The email is IMAP, which means all the mailboxes are stored online for easy access from anywhere. The same emails you see on your Mac you also see online and on your iPhone. You can create calendars, mailboxes, and contact lists and select who should have access to them and what they can do with them. For example, in CENTIMETERCUBE we have one list of all employees, which everyone can see but only a few can edit. We also have calendars
set up for each department as well as one for the company as a whole. Each user can also have their private calendar and contacts.
Backup and Support
Of course the support offered is critical with these sorts of solutions. One reason for selecting a hosted solution rather than do it yourself is to have less headache in terms of looking after the server, the software, etc. If you have your own server then you’re responsible for updating it, backing it up and everything else. Inftek has a five day backup retention policy meaning that any data is backed up and kept going back five days. Inftek’s support has so far been excellent. I’ve contacted them with a number of issues, mostly issues where I’ve not known how to do something, and they’ve been very fast to respond and patient in dealing with me. It’s good to see a tech company taking support so seriously.
Apple Friendly
A major factor that speaks for Kerio for Apple users is that it’s very friendly to our Macs and iPhones. On the Mac you use Mail, iCal and Address Book and have instant access to your email, calendars and contacts. Similarly on the iPhone you set it up as an Exchange account and can push any new information to the device. Any update made anywhere is instantly changed everywhere else. For example, make a calendar entry on your iPhone, and seconds later you see it on the web and in iCal on your Mac. Very cool. Sure, keeping ‘push’ in effect on the iPhone will require a good data plan and the batteries may run out faster, but it’s a very nice functionality. If you’re on Blackberry you can also access your Kerio accounts by AstraSync, $49 per year.
Final Words
All in all our experience with Kerio hosted by Inftek has been great so far. Our company email is more responsive than before, we have all email, calendars, etc. online and it’s all backed up and taken care of. Their support has been responsive and helpful, something rare today, I find. If you’re looking for something similar to what CENTIMETERCUBE was, take a look at Kerio hosting by Inftek.

Pretty much all users need sound and USB to work in their Windows XP installation. For technical reasons both sound and USB are disabled by default and you need to enable them after installing a guest operating system (OS).
Sharing Files
One of the things that might come in handy is the ability to transfer files between Windows XP and Mac OS X. There are two ways to do that with VirtualBox: “Shared Folders” and Windows networking.
1. Shut down the Windows XP OS if it’s running. This is a standard Windows shutdown. Alternatively you can just close the window and select the proper option to stop the guest. 2. Click on “Settings” in the toolbar. 3. In the “Audio” tab, check “Enable Audio” and select “Core Audio” as “Host Audio Driver”. 4. In the “Ports” tab, check both “Enable USB Controller” and “Enable USB 2.0 (EHCI) Controller”. 5. Press “OK” to apply the changes. Next time you run Windows, sound will be enabled and you can access your USB devices. Before using USB devices in Windows XP, make sure you eject them in Mac OS X first.

Enable File Sharing
1. Make sure you have already installed the Guest Additions. 2. In a running guest OS window, there is a folder icon down in the status bar. Click on the icon to open the “Folder Sharing” dialog box. You can also access to this from “Settings” if the guest OS is not running. 3. Creating a new shared folder by clicking on the plus icon on the right side of the dialog box. 4. In “Add Share” dialogue box, choose “Folder Path” (on your Mac). The “Folder Name” (in the virtual OS) is automatically named. 5. Check if you need the folder to be permanent (stays after shutting down the virtual OS) or to be read only (safer). 6. Press “OK” to create the folder. 7. In Windows XP, open “My Computer” and try to open “\\ VBOXSVR\YOUR_FOLDER\”. If it did not work try to navigate to “Entire Network” and then to “Virtual Box Shared Folders”.
SMB is a protocol (think language for communication) used in Windows and other computer platforms. It enables computer communication, printer sharing, and other network activities. Samba is a free implementation of the SMB protocol, created to enable non-Windows systems to participate in SMB networks. Samba is built-in to many UNIX and UNIX-like operating systems, including Mac OS X 10.5 Leopard.
Enable Networking
1. In Mac OS X (the host), open “System Preferences” and then click on “Sharing”. 2. Enable “File Sharing” in the Services. 3. Click “Options” and check “Share files and folders using SMB”. 4. Select the account(s) you want to have access to SMB and enter the password for that particular account when prompted. 5. Close System Preferences. 6. In Windows XP, in My Computer address bar, type in the IP address of your Mac (e.g. 192.168.1.101). If you don’t know your IP address you can see it

in the System Preferences, File Sharing. 7. The shared folder should now be available in “My Computer” in Windows XP and you can access it from both Mac OS X and Windows. The process is basically the same whether you’re downloading something free or buying something.

If you’re downloading lots of apps or large games that take time to download, your best option is to use your Mac to download the apps and then sync them to your iPhone.

أصبح اآلي فون مادة يومية لألخبار منذ إطالقه رسميًا في اإلمارات والسعودية وقد قمنا في العدد السابق من شفل جازين وعلى موقعنا اإللكتروني Shufflegazine.com بتقديم تغطية لألخبار منذ أن كانت مجرد إشاعة حتى لحظة اإلعالن الرسمي. في هذا المقال نود أن نلفت انتباهكم إلى نقطة أخرى من تغطيتنا للحدث وذلك بعرض الطرق المختلفة التي يمكن أن ُتكتب بها كلمة آي فون باللغة العربية. ً بداية أود أن أشير إلى أن كتابة الكلمات األجنبية بالحروف العربية اكتسبت مزيدًا من األهمية هذه األيام والسيما بعد زيادة استخدام الحواسيب واألجهزة اإللكترونية األخرى لذا قررنا أن نناقش معكم اإلمكانيات المختلفة لكتابة “آي فون” ومحاولة معرفة أيهما أفضل ولماذا. الحظت أن هناك أربعة صيغ تستخدم لكتابة كلمة آي فون بالعربية وهي كالتالي: الصيغة األولى هي “آي فون” وهي كلمة تتكون من مقطعين ،بحيث يكتب في المقطع األول نطق حرف “آي” ككلمة كاملة ومنفصلة متبوعًا بالمقطع الثاني من الكلمة .أعتقد أن معظم منتجات آبل التي تحتوي أسماؤها على حرف “آي” يجب أن تكتب بنفس الطريقة ّ لذا أفضل هذا الخيار ألنه يساعد القراء على نطق الكلمة بشكل موافق تمامًا للنطق اإلنجليزي.
In this article we would like to draw your attention to one particular part of our coverage, regarding the different ways we can write the word “iPhone” in Arabic.
أما الخيار الثاني أو الصيغة الثانية فهي “آيفون” وهي كما ترون إدماج للمقطعين التي تكونت منهما الصيغة األولى لكي تصبح كلمة من مقطع واحد وهي خالية من األخطاء الهجائية ولكنها قد تؤدي إلى إرباك القارئ مما قد يؤدي إلى نطق الكلمة بشكل يخالف النطق اإلنجليزي. الصيغة الثالثة هي “اي فون” وهي تشابه الشكل األول تمامًا باستثناء عدم وجود همزة المد على حرف األلف لذا أعتبرها ناقصة وبطبيعة الحال يؤثر وجود الهمزة في دقة النطق مع أنني أعترف أن الكثير من متحدثي العربية ال يلقون با ً ال الستخدام الهمزات بشكل عام. وأخيرًا الصيغة الرابعة وهي “أيفون” والتي تعتبر استخدامًا خاطئًا للهمزة ويؤدي بدوره إلى أخطاء في النطق. هذه هي األسباب التي دفعتنا في شفل جازين إلى اختيار الشكل األول كأفضل الخيارات المتاحة لكتابة كلمة “آي فون” هكذا بالحروف العربية.

”eMusic “إي ميو ِزك:بدائل اآلي تيونز The iPhone has had it's official release in the UAE; but, sadly, we are still without an official iTunes Music Store, the UAE store consisting only of iPhone apps. My dream of the iPhone ushering in with it a shiny new UAE iTunes Music Store, complete not only with Western artists, but an ample selection of recent Khaleeji tracks and Arab classics was, as I feared, only a dream. And a search for alternatives that work with Mac OS X and iPod, AND are available in the UAE is mostly fruitless as well. Happily there is at least one alternative that not only integrates with iTunes, but also allows downloads to the UAE and payments by UAE issued credit cards. The eMusic service is not new to me. I was a subscriber for a couple of years before moving to the UAE. I was very pleased to find that it was still available to me after changing my address and billing information, unlike the US iTunes store and Amazon's MP3 downloads.
Getting started with eMusic: Sign up for an account, or try the free trial program. during the process you will be prompted to receive the eMusic download management software.

Once it downloads, run the installer. When it finishes you’re all set!
The bad and good news is that you won't find all the latest hits on eMusic; although it does have some of the more famous artists, it specializes in serving up a large number of independent music labels. If you're hooked on Britney Spears and Madonna, you may be disappointed in the selection; but if you like finding great new artists and out of the ordinary music, then eMusic can be heavenly. They even have a good selection of Arabic music. And with multiple recommendation features written by real music lovers, as well as track previews, finding music you will like is easy, even among unfamiliar titles. Pricing is based on packages, not by track or album. Thus, price-per-track can be as low as $0.25 each. All tracks are DRM-free MP3s, so you can easily use them on any device you like. And eMusic also has a Download Manager that works nicely with iTunes, making getting your tunes from the web site to your iPod the matter of only a click or two.

خدمة إي ميوزك ليست جديدة بالنسبة لي حيث قمت باالشتراك فيها لعدة سنوات قبل االنتقال إلى اإلمارات ها قد تم إطالق اآلي فون بشكل رسمي في اإلمارات العربية المتحدة ،ولكن لألسف ال يوجد حتى اآلن متجر آي تيونز رسمي حيث تحتوي المتاجر في اإلمارات على برامج لآلي فون فقط .وحلمي أن أرى اآلي فون مع متجر آي تيونز جديد ومتكامل ذي طابع إماراتي بحيث ال يقتصر على فناني الغرب فحسب بل يشمل مزيجًا من األغاني الخليجية الحديثة وكالسيكيات األغاني العربية، غير أني أخشى بأن يظل ذلك مجرد حلم فقط .ولألسف فإن البحث عن بدائل متوافقة مع نظام ماك أو إس إكس وآي بود وأن تكون متوفرة في اإلمارات أمر غير مجد في معظم األحيان .ولكن لحسن الحظ هناك ٍ بديل واحد على األقل متوافق مع اآلي تيونز كما يوفر خدمة تنزيل األغاني في اإلمارات ويتم الدفع باستخدام بطاقات االئتمان الصادرة من اإلمارات .فخدمة “إي إلي ،حيث قمت ميوزك ”eMusicليست جديدة بالنسبة ّ باالشتراك فيها لعدة سنوات قبل االنتقال إلى اإلمارات. وبطبيعة الحال سعدت جدًا عندما علمت أنها مازالت متاحة لي بعد تغيير عنواني وبيانات إرسال الفواتير، على عكس متجر آي تيونز وخدمة آمازون لتنزيل ملفات إم بي ثري في أمريكا .أما األخبار السارة والسيئة في نفس الوقت فهي أنك لن تجد أحدث األغاني في “إي ميوزك” ،وعلى الرغم من وجود بعض أشهر الفنانين إال أن “إي ميوزك” متخصص في تقديم شريحة كبيرة من أصناف الموسيقى الحديثة التي تميل إلى الحرية وكسر العادات والقيود .ومع وجود العديد من النصائح المكتوبة من قِ بَل عشاق الموسيقى الحقيقيين إضافة إلى تحليالت األغاني ،فإنك ستجد موسيقاك المفضلة بسهولة ،حتى وسط هذا الكم الهائل من العناوين غير المألوفة .وتعتمد األسعار على الباقات وليس وفقًا لألغنية أو األلبوم .كما أن جميع األغاني الموجودة في “إي ميوزك” ال تخضع لحقوق الحماية الرقمية لذا تستطيع أن تستخدمها على أي جهاز شئت.

في هذا الشرح التعليمي سوف نريكم كيفية تنزيل صورة الغالف ألي ألبوم .من خالل آي تيونز A very cool feature in iTunes is that it displays album artwork in many places. This is especially evident in the Cover Flow mode, where you can flick through albums very quickly and see the album art fly by in all their graphical splendor. If you buy music from the iTunes Store you automatically get the right album artwork but if you, for example, import a CD, iTunes might not do the same. In such cases you might have to tell iTunes to go get the right artwork. In this tutorial we tell you how.
Step 1
Identify the albums that have missing artwork. This is easy, just look at that particular album in iTunes or better yet, in Cover Flow mode. If artwork is missing you see a box with only a musical note in it.
Step 3
iTunes will show a dialogue asking you if you’re sure. It warns you that some information will be sent to Apple. Don’t worry about this, just click on “Get album artwork”.

كيف ترخص وتلغي ترخيص حاسبات ماك في حساب آي تيونز Music, TV, and movies bought from the iTunes Store are protected with DRM Digital Rights Management. This means that Apple restricts what you can do with it. For music, for example, you can put it on up to five Macs, any number of iPods, and burn it to discs. To play this media on a Mac you have to be signed in with your iTunes account and authorize that Mac to play your media. You can do this on up to five Macs. To put it on a sixth you have to deauthorize one of the five. So if you’re upgrading computer, perhaps selling the old one, you want to deauthorize it before authorizing the new one. Here’s what you need to do.
Authorize
With iTunes running, start playing some media you’ve purchased from the iTunes Store. If you’ve previously authorized the Mac, the media will play; if you’ve not authorized the Mac, you will be asked to sign in to your iTunes Store account and authorize the Mac. If all goes well, iTunes will tell you authorization was successful and how many Macs have been authorized out of the allowed five.
Deauthorize
With iTunes running, go to Store > Deauthorize Computer. Then enter your iTunes Store information and iTunes will log in, check with the system, and if all goes well tell you that the computer has been deauthorized.

iTunes Plus - No DRM
The exception to the DRM in the iTMS is iTunes Plus. Anything in iTunes Plus is not DRM protected but you pay a little bit extra for the music. In the Middle East there is no iTunes Store. You will have to set up an iTunes account in a supported country, including US, UK, Japan, etc. For that you need a credit card with billing address in one of those countries. At January’s Macworld Apple announced that within three months all the music in the iTunes Store would be DRM-free.
