most recently The Patriot, are all well-known entities with Shane and Tonya at the helm. Recently, The Showtimes had the pleasure of sitting down with the two to discuss both their outlook on life and their dedication to bringing out the best in those around them. Shane was born and raised in Stonewall, Texas where his dad managed President Lyndon B. Johnson’s ranch. L.B.J. passed away in 1974, the year that Meier was born; but his family continued to work the cattle and land for Johnson’s wife and the government. Along with his two younger brothers,
Shane grew up highly involved with the Hereford breed – heifers in particular. Over the years they added crossbreds and steers to the mix. In addition to the cattle, Shane found success in livestock judging where he was a member of the State Champion 4-H Livestock Judging Team and State Champion FFA Livestock Judging Team in consecutive years. He left home to judge and pursue an education at South Plains College in Levelland, Texas. On the opposite end of the spectrum, Tonya grew up in West Texas where her focus was on sports and school. No livestock. Growing up,

hen you combine ties to a United States President and roots deep in academia and sports, the result is the dynamic power couple of Shane and Tonya Meier. Over the years, they have taken Shane’s background in Agriculture and Tonya’s love for education and youth to impact the livestock world in more ways than one. she was highly competitive in cheerleading. Following high school, Tonya attended Texas Tech University where she studied PreFamily Law. Her passion for learning and youth led her to obtain a Master’s in Education. It’s this love of kids that has been a driving force for Tonya as both she and Shane not only tackle life, but approach it with the mindset of – how can we make it better? And that’s exactly what they have done… Coming from the two different upbringings, together, Shane and Tonya have dedicated their life to taking a leadership role in producing opportunities for youth in Agriculture. Along with their sons, Mills and Mason, they own and operate Meier Show Cattle back in Shane’s hometown of Stonewall. Although both boys are currently at Texas Tech, family is still an important aspect of everything they do. Over a decade ago, they founded Battle of the Cattle – also
known as BOC. What started as nutrition clinics, camps and showmanship seminars, grew into a prospect steer show series, open to youth from all across the nation. One would think between their show cattle operation and BOC that the Meier’s would be left with little down time. In the Fall of 2020, Shane and Tonya felt the need of a Junior National type show for the show/club calf industry – as they are, in all rights, a breed of their own. What did they do? They announced the Show Steer Junior National that will take place July 21-25 in Abilene, Texas. The announcement came as an exciting spark across the industry! The Meier’s plan to run the event similar to other breed Junior Nationals with various contests, activities and shows. Just weeks after announcing the Steer Show Junior National came the cancellation of the 2021 Fort Worth Stock Show. Shane and Tonya did not miss a beat. They rallied their troops and formulated The Patriot Junior Market Steer Show. A Texas Major. Anyone who has never attended a major show in Texas may not grasp the magnitude of this type of event. Classes with close to
63
Tonya Meier 100 head and nearly 2,000 total entries (one calf per exhibitor) - it was no little undertaking. Yet, within a few months’ time, Shane and Tonya executed what may go down in history as one of the most fun, big-time, smoothest run cattle shows. They did not leave one stone unturned; from the volunteers and decorations, to fundraising and organizing a sale where they raised thousands of dollars for the youth of Texas! All with a crew of less than 25 people!
Time and time again, Shane and Tonya have made the youth of our industry a priority in their lives. Everything they do they give 100%. They describe walking away from various shows and events over the years with the sense of, “How can we improve that?” They would take notes on things that were done well and things that could be done better. It is so important for them to use livestock to help raise kids and to do everything with the kids in mind. Anyone who has attended
a BOC event or The Patriot will attest to the atmosphere of positivity, inspiration and motivation. While at the end of the day, everyone strives for the Champion slap, Shane and Tonya tailor their shows to be highly interactive, educational and an outlet for people to spend time together and form relationships. A great example of this is the BOC’s Panel of the Pros – an opportunity for kids at the show to talk to industry leaders, such as Brandon Horn and Clint Petzold. Not only does
this provide knowledge, but it also breaks the ice for them to reach out and communicate with those leaders throughout the event and beyond. One word of advice Tonya shared that she strives to live by is, “People will forget what you say to them, but they will never forget how you made them feel.” What she and Shane do day-in and day-out is a prime example of living one’s life in a way that betters those around them. •

MARCH/APRIL 2021
We knew all along that we wanted to be in the cattle industry and after
college we were eager to make our dreams come true. In 2006, we decided to establish our own business, ShowTime Cattle Company. We currently run 50 cows and bulls of our own and custom feed 150 cows. Every day is a team effort as we are both involved in all aspects of the businessfrom daily chores, making breeding decisions, improving feed rations, finding the next great investment, marketing our cattle to traveling to shows across the country to provide customer service to our customers. ShowTime Cattle Company utilizes reverse sort IVF in our program to maximize the quality and the number of heifers we have each year. We continuously study pedigrees to try and find that “perfect match” to our donors to improve our program. We don’t have a lot of calves each year compared to other farms and ranches across the country so the matings that we selected have to click! We strive to breed and sell cattle that

eff Koch and his fiancé, Jill Blake, own and operate ShowTime Cattle Company in Mooreland, Indiana. They are no strangers to the Hereford breed or to the show ring. Jeff grew up outside of Indianapolis on a Polled Hereford farm. Every year he traveled with his family to the Hereford Junior Nationals. Jeff was named the Herdsman of the Year at the 2003 Hereford Junior Nationals. He majored in health and fitness at Purdue University. Jill grew up on a cattle, hog and grain farm in a small Indiana town. Her family raised mainly Horned Herefords but had a handful of other breeds. She started showing when she was 5 years old and showed competitively at the state and national levels. Her love for animals and the Agricultural Industry lead her to Purdue University where she studied Animal Sciences with a focus in Agribusiness.

are competitive in the show ring and profitable in production. For us, it starts at the ground, we like cattle that are big footed, structurally sound, deep bodied and easy fleshing with high fertility, udder quality and longevity.

In 2008, Jeff went out to California with Ralph and Ray Ramsey to look at Hoffman’s sale calves. They were in the pasture looking at calves and a bull calf kept walking the fence next to the pasture they were in. Jeff asked what he was and Jason Hoffman said that he wasn’t in the sale. Jeff inquired more about him and found out that he was a full sib to 6 calves in the sale. Jeff really liked him so he purchased that bull calf. That was probably the smartest purchase we’ve ever made as he is a full sib to H Cattle Kate 8045 ET. Now, we had to get him from California to Indiana. Hoffman could get him to Kansas and we had a friend that was going to Kansas to visit his son. The only problem was that he drives a semi with a flatbed trailer. He strapped a couple of tarps and gates on his flatbed trailer and brought the bull back to Indiana on his flatbed trailer. Finally, H Excel 8051 ET was home at ShowTime. We had people stop by to see him and one guy offered us 5 times what we paid for him to make him a steer. Talk about dilemma- herd bull or take the money and make him a steer. Y’all know the outcome- we kept him as a bull. He was special. He had the show look. He was sound. He was everything that we needed to excel our program to the next level…and he did just that. We had so much interest in Excel that we started to sell semen on him. H Excel 8051 was our first promotional bull and he introduced us to that part of the industry. We like bulls that are unique and offer characteristics that we want in our program and that will impact and add value to the Hereford
breed. We don’t promote a bull unless we truly believe in that bull. We currently have semen on eight promotional bulls which can be found on our website www.showtimecattle. com. To see the progress we’ve made from where we started to where we are now is very rewarding. From purchasing our own farm, increasing our herd numbers, incorporating IVF into our program, to the way we market our cattle- these advancements have improved our operation. Our first sale was a bid off with 5 heifers. We sold all the heifers we had that year. A couple years later we went to live auctions where we sold 40+ lots with the help of consignors. In 2014, we had our first Online Sale with 12 lots. Now, we have three online sales a year. We sell heifers in our It’s
ShowTime Online Sale in September and October online sales. Our March online sale includes our fall heifers and embryos. Over the years we’ve bred, raised, sold and been a part of many National Champions and Show Heifers of the Year. It’s been an honor to receive the Premier Breeder and Premier Exhibitor awards. There are no words to describe the feelings of these accomplishments- we are truly blessed. We are very thankful for the opportunities, memories and the friendships that the agricultural industry has provided us. We’ve been fortunate to work with some of the greatest cattlemen and the impact they made on us is something we will always remember. Ray Ramsey has been there since the beginning. We’ve
traveled many miles together looking at cattle, going to shows, bouncing breeding ideas off each other and so much more. We can’t thank him enough for all of the advice, guidance and support he’s provided us. Many years of hard work, dedication, experience, knowledge and a whole lot of love have gone into building the ShowTime brand and the cattle that we stand behind. Our customer service is something that separates us from the rest. We want to engage, educate and empower our customers. We provide one on one educational sessions to our customers (from animal nutrition, to showmanship to daily hair care and fitting). We wouldn't be where we are today without having customers that believe in our cattle and our program. We thank each and every customerbecause of YOU- we get to do what we love every day. •

T
his last Christmas our ten-year-old asked for a case to display the belt buckles that she had won over the past few years. As we hung the case on the wall and Libbi placed each buckle in its special spot, her little face glowed as she recalled the story behind each one. Some buckles came harder than others, but each one involved a journey, a goal, and an accomplishment. I noticed that as she talked about each one, the things that made each buckle special was not the color of the stones, or how shiny they were, but instead it was about the story behind them. It made me think that God probably looks at us in that same way. We are all special prizes in the Lord’s eyes, each with a unique story of hardships and struggles, but in the end, if we accept Jesus into our hearts, we accomplish God’s goal for us, and we become prizes in His kingdom.
BECOMING MORE LIKE CHRIST. In Philippians 3:10-14, Paul writes. “10 I want to know Christ—yes, to know the power of his resurrection and participation in his sufferings, becoming like him in his death, 11 and so, somehow, attaining to the resurrection
from the dead. 12 Not that I have already obtained all this, or have already arrived at my goal, but I press on to take hold of that for which Christ Jesus took hold of me. 13 Brothers and sisters, I do not consider myself yet to have taken hold of it. But one thing I do: Forgetting what is behind
and straining toward what is ahead, 14 I press on toward the goal to win the prize for which God has called me heavenward in Christ Jesus.” Paul’s objective here is to become more like Christ and to fulfill everything that Christ wants him to be. He is focused on the goal, setting aside the things from his past that make him feel like a failure. We have all tried and failed, but those are the things that teach us and make us stronger. If all the rewards came easy, we wouldn’t become better at what we do. When we make mistakes in life, instead of being ashamed and dwelling on them, we go to Christ and ask for forgiveness. The most important thing is to always learn from those mistakes and realize that becoming who Christ wants us to be is a journey, so keep your eye on the prize and work hard toward the goal! •

y name is Mason Grady and I am ten years old and in fourth grade. I live in Grandview, Texas with my parents, Brad and Misty, and my sister Mikala. I exhibited the grand champion steer at the Patriot Junior Market Steer Show in Abilene, Texas.

This was a very special win for me with my steer named Trentin. He has been special from the start. He’s always been sweet and just had a kind disposition. Because of this I always enjoyed working with Trentin
The Meier family and their crew truly put on a first class event and I can’t thank them enough. They spent countless hours so we could have a place to exhibit our steers. They made everything so accommodating from move in until the sale was over. I am grateful for the opportunity to know people
I am so blessed to have the help and support of my parents, my sister, Bobby Joe and Mandi (Maddox). Also a big thanks to Bodee Schlipf, Jared Hobbs, Tessa Schotte, Kasside Luce, and Jeff Howard. I appreciate you all so much for all you do for me. You all are the best team anyone could ever have. •

Showing livestock is a big part of life for me and my family. So, naturally I was disappointed when I heard that Fort Worth and Denver were both cancelled. Thankfully it wasn’t long until I learned that the Meier family were working on a show for exhibitors like myself who didn’t get a chance to show their cattle.
like the Meier’s. They truly lead by example, and their hard work and dedication to this industry will not soon be forgotten.
MARCH/APRIL 2021
Without their hard work and dedication we would not have had anywhere to show our haired steers. Then all that work and time would have been wasted on cattle that would have just ended up at the sale barn.

and looked forward to showing him. I feel very lucky to have exhibited a steer that good so early in my career, and I hope I am lucky enough to get one as sweet and good as him again.

169 THE SHOWTIMES
Cole collaborates with others in the Livestock Industry on topics such as animal husbandry, laws, livestock breeds, genetics, showmanship, livestock shows, agriculture politics and advocates for agriculture every chance he gets. He hosts showmanship clinics, leads other 4-H meetings and serves as a “Special Guest” more times than he can count. He recently had the honor of giving the Pledge of Allegiance for the newly elected State Board of Education member Audrey Young in his very own Trinity County Courthouse. Nonetheless, at the end of the day, showing heifers is his pure passion and joy. He uses his prior knowledge both in and out of the ring to help others, but he also stays humble and grounded as his wins add up.
Limousin cattle at the age of 8 years old with “Sadie” and has continued to pride himself in showing the breed that first brought him success and continues to do so. As his own herd as grown, he enjoys watching those heifers’ offspring be successful in the ring too. Sadie has also raised every Grand Champion Steer that Cole and his brother, Jack Cutter, have shown at their local county fair. He is the only Junior Exhibitor in Texas that has won back-toback Supreme Continental Heifer at Heart of Texas with two different breeds as well as back-to-back Rodeo Austin Supreme Heifer and the next year with Reserve Supreme Heifer. He took honors as he won Limousin Junior Nationals Cow/Calf pair, Junior Nationals Futurity Reserve Champion, TAMU Saddle and Sirloin Supreme Heifer and two weeks later was named North Texas State Fair Supreme Heifer with a heifer named “Fergie”. She was the most spectacular female (bred & raised by Super C Limousin in Kansas) and transitioned into the best cow prospect any Breeder could ask for! Cole has won Breed

resides in a small town nestled deep in the Piney Woods of East Texas. Being raised in Groveton, TX on his families 5th generation farm, the rural area definitely keeps this academically smart young man on his toes. Not because of the population size, but more less, the rural lifestyle that sets him apart from others. “Your family name is all you have in this small community” he says. Growing up, my Grandfather has always said “a firm hand shake is your contract and manners and respect are free. Look a person in the eyes when talking and listening to them. Value your name and don’t let negativity in the world bring you down.” Cole plays a HUGE integral part of the Texas 4-H and currently serves as the Trinity County 4-H President, but he set his eyes on the bigger 4-H picture and ran for District 5 4-H President and was elected to serve the 2020-2021 fiscal year. Not only does he organize and schedule events and meetings within his County

Champion at State Fair of Texas, Heart of Texas, Fort Worth Stock Show and Rodeo, Rodeo Austin and Limousin Junior Nationals. He has had Reserve Breed Champions at San Antonio Stock Show and Rodeo and Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo numerous times over his show career. He enjoys showing outside of Texas just as much as he likes to stay local (even though Texas is BIG)! Cole hit the road when given the opportunity to show, considering livestock shows were canceling rapidly due to Covid-19, at the Mississippi Youth Expo where he was Champion AOB in late Fall 2020. Then he took Reserve Champion honors with a Purebred Limousin (bred and raised by ROMN Limousin) at the Cattlemen’s Congress in OKC which kicked off the spring season off to a good start. Soon to follow was the Cowgirls in Cowtown show in Fort Worth where he won Champion Percent Simmental. Learning to adjust to the Covid-19 ways seemed difficult for most, but for Cole he took the restricted opportunities and “masked” up. If that was the only way he would be able to round out his Junior career, he would do so with a smile hidden by a mask. He will be the first to tell you that backdrop pictures look a tad different with the mask on, but one day we will look back and say “remember when we almost had livestock showing
taken away”? Covid-19 has definitely put a spin on this industry and livelihoods of individuals, but hopefully preventative measures will reduce everyone’s risk and allow us all to continue to play a vital role in the livestock industry. “You have family and then you have stockshow family and for each I am ever so grateful. Our family looks forward to each show and when all the cancellations were happening, it seemed like a rug was pulled out from underneath us all” said Cole. When asked his most
memorable events, he gladly says “From stepping out of my quiet comfort zone and participating for the first time in Sales Talk at Limousin Junior Nationals with “Fergie” a few years back, I never imagined I would win. However, when you are talking about a phenomenal female like Fergie, the smooth charismatic sales talk came relatively easy”! Junior Nationals is always one of his favorites because of seeing such high quality cattle from various Breeders from all over the United States. Winning the Junior Nationals Sales
Talk, Livestock Judging and even Photography just puts another feather in his imaginary hat. Since the beginning of his show career, he has built a relationship with Jackson Cattle Company which has set the bar high for a young man of his age and his brother. He says repeatedly that “you need to find a good Breeder and build a relationship with them. Success doesn’t come easy or quick but trust and hard work ethic will carry anyone far in life and in the show ring”. Everyone needs the support and advice from industry leaders
MARCH/APRIL 2021
for the upcoming young exhibitors. Agriculture and cattle are my calling and I have no plans on leaving the industry anytime soon”. Some simple advice from the 6’2”, red-headed, slender young man is “always congratulate your opponent. It speaks volumes for your character and sets a tone for others around you. Don’t be afraid to ask for help or even questions. We all started out not knowing everything. But more importantly, thank your family, your Breeder and the crews behind the scenes. Basically, your circle. Study hard and always, I repeat always, try to help educate those about our industry.” •
171
When you ask Cole what his future plans are, his response is simple…. “Continue to educate myself and others the best I can. I plan on attending college to double major in Agriculture and Nursing. I would like to be a Physician’s Assistant (PA) and hopefully continue to raise high quality show heifers

and he relies heavily on the Jackson Family. Cole admires those who are selfdriven, humble, respectful and hard-working that share an interest in high quality show cattle like he does.

In September of 2019, when the Ratliff Family opened up their barn for everyone to look at sale heifers, my family and I wasted no time heading to Westphalia, Ks. My dad told me we had to look through the pens of the smaller May heifers because there was no way we would be able to afford the big
January female I was drawn to after seeing her sale picture. When we finally made it to the lot the January heifers were in, I knew that I wanted the Lot 1 heifer to show without a doubt. Over the next few weeks I didn’t stop talking about buying this heifer; I thought of every scenario that could happen with the sale and whether or not she would end up in our barn. Ratliff ’s sale is in the form of a phone bid off, so after many long days of phone calls from Chase and David, dad called me and said, “We bought Gabby.” Throughout the winter and spring of last year, we were starting to become very excited, as

We always say that there are many stars that have to line up to be successful at the national level; and
with Gabby we were lucky enough to have those stars align. This past January we showed Gabby at the Cowgirls in Cowtown Show and were fortunate enough to be chosen as Supreme Champion Female. Winning in Fort Worth was truly a feeling my family and I will never forget. I remember coming out of the ring and listening to Chase tell me, “I told you your time would come.” Ending Gabby’s show career with her being named a Supreme Female meant so much to my family and I. Not being able to show at as many jackpots in the spring made the wins in the fall much more special. The amount of people in the livestock industry who have supported me throughout my show career has been surreal to my family and I. Being as successful as we have been over the past year with Gabby is something we dreamed about ever since I started showing. I could not have asked for any better family to stand alongside Gabby and I this year than the Ratliff ’s. They have truly been such a great family to work with and have in our corner with Gabby. The feelings that my family and I experienced in Fort Worth are truly indescribable. I could not feel more thankful and blessed to have had the opportunity to show Gabby over this past year. They always say that all good things must come to an end, and her time in the show ring might have ended, however she is just getting started making her mark as a donor cow. •

we were making the Top 5 at different shows with Gabby. My family and I truly had no idea what was to come in the fall. We were awfully excited to head to West Monroe, Louisiana, this Summer for Limousin Junior Nationals. Junior Show day did not go as well as we had hoped for, and afterwards I had no idea how true the words, “Your time will come” from Chase Ratliff would be. A few days later we showed in the Open Limousin Show which started Gabby and I’s unforgettable run. Doug Satree chose Gabby as the Champion Limousin Heifer in the All American Limousin Futurity... the emotions ran high that day as that was our first time to be slapped Champion at a National Show! To say we were ecstatic would be an understatement. After missing all the jackpot shows in the spring due to Covid, dad promised me that we would travel many miles to attend all the shows Covid would allow us to in the fall. We showed four weekends in a row throughout September and early October and were fortunate enough to be in the Top 5 at all of the shows, while earning Supreme Female at two of the shows. Throughout the fall we were able to be a part of the Supreme Drive at the N.A.I.L.E, Cattlemen’s Congress, as well as Cowgirls in Cowtown.

about helping us find steers for the Texas majors. My freshman year ended, and I now had a set of eight steers for my sisters and I to show. We had success over the next couple years under Tony’s advisement and help, making the sale at the majors and being thrilled about it. This year for my senior year Tony went all out to try and get me a major win like my sisters had done before. Winning my first major and being the first ever person to win the Cattlemen’s Congress steer show was an awesome experience. Thinking about the excitement of the slap gives me shivers even a month after the big win. I vividly remember walking my steer out after getting the slap and Tony bear hugging me!! The emotion just began to well up inside of me as the realization started to hit me of what I had just accomplished. That day was definitely one of the best days of my life!! I would like to thank several people for the entirety of my stock show journey who helped me but the list would be too long to say in this short article so I will keep it to the basics. First of all I would like to thank Tony and Brandy Jeffs for everything they have done for me throughout my life but especially these last couple years and giving me a chance to show their steers. I would like to thank Seth Hammermeister for everything he has done for me throughout the years. Finally, I would like to thank my family for their help at the barn and dealing with my pickiness about the steers, Mason Allen, my lifelong best friend, and AJ Rogers for all of his help. These people may not be related to me, but they are all family and I would not be the person I am without them. •
MARCH/APRIL 2021
first got started in the livestock industry at the age of eight showing Limousin heifers. The following year I began showing steers at Texas majors and it was rough to say the least. I showed at Fort Worth, San Antonio and Houston and did not get pulled at any of them. The next year we were introduced to Tony and Brandy Jeffs and they began helping my family and I. Soon after, the progress skyrocketed. I made the sale at Fort Worth, won champion Charolais heifer at San Antonio, got to walk into the rodeo with my reserve champion Simmental steer at Houston, and was fortunate enough to earn the title of Reserve Supreme Heifer at Houston in 2013 with my Charolais heifer, Mary. From that year on things only continued to improve with my sisters and I winning several junior nationals and breeds at majors all over the United States. Everything was looking great until my freshman year of high school. Some things happened that year which prevented me from showing at the Texas majors that year. Even though not being able to show that year and do what I love was one of the worst feelings in the world, I think it was one of the best things for me. That hard year made me realize how much I love the industry, the cattle, the people and even all the long hours of hard work. As that show season moved on without me, I began planning for the next year and how I would show. I talked to my uncle, Jason Forrester, and my grandpa, Pops, and they agreed to give me a couple American steers they had raised that year. I began working with those two steers at the barn Pops had built a few years ago. My mom and I then talked to Tony and Brandy

Hi I’m Whitney Walker, 20, from Prairie Grove, Arkansas. I am the proud breeder of FIVE National Champions in FOUR breeds at this year’s inaugural 2021 Oklahoma Cattlemen’s Congress, which included the Supreme Champion Heifer in the open shows, a Hereford, exhibited by Lauren May, Grand and Reserve Grand Champion MaineTainer females, the Reserve Grand Champion Shorthorn Female and the Reserve Grand Champion Foundation Simmental female. I have to admit, I had not even given thought to what
Whitney Walker
are all so very lucky to be in an industry that is not canceled, and continues to lift us up and challenges us to be better. we had accomplished until a few weeks ago. I spent most of my time at the event behind the scenes, volunteering to help make the show possible and working with my cattle. As proud as I am about the success of my cattle, I am the proudest of all of the people behind the scenes that support me, help me grow and are my show family - my team. We
As I wind my show career down, I am very thankful for my family who have always supported my dreams. My dad, Eric, my mom, Linsay, brother, Mason and sister, Catelyn, as well as Cody Green, Craig and Stephanie Steck have supported me every step. SELECTION My dad always instilled in
me that we were going to select cattle from proven people and programs with proven genetics and strong cow families behind them. We placed value in purchasing good ones from great people. Never underestimate the power of the people you associate yourself with. I’ve been the beneficiary of so many amazing mentors that have helped shape my life. These people did not see value in me just because we were purchasing cattle, in fact the best have continued to support me as I’ve started to exhibit my bred and owned cattle. WHO SAYS YOU CAN’T Don’t let anyone tell you that you can’t! Growing up in northwest Arkansas, my family and I were always
told we could not be completive on a national level. We were told we needed to be from the Midwest. With many Junior National and National Champions later – I’ve learned as long as you’re willing to work nothing can get in your way.
COCO COW FAMILY Coco is one of our all-time favorite Hereford females and I remember when we were looking to purchase her from Randy and Jamie Mullinix with Purple Reign Cattle Company. My dad always committed so much
Lauren’s CoCo daughter is an embryo calf raised by Purple Reign. I am so excited for their success. Each one of these cow families and the many others that reside in Prairie Grove, Arkansas on our family ranch are blessings to me and my family. They have brought a great deal of show ring success home, which I am forever grateful for. Most importantly, they have brought the opportunity to know the best people in the industry. •

LUCY COW FAMILY – 610D Dam of 3 OKC Champion’s! The Lucy Cow Family is currently one of my greatest blessings. Lucy 610D required a lot of faith from my dad and myself. She was skinny, not great haired yet, there was something special about her. Craig (Steck) played a large role in assuring dad and I she was one we needed. He always focuses on selecting ones that have the ability to do great things in and out of the ring. Lucy 610D went on to the first Supreme Champion in both the Open and Junior Shows at the World Beef Expo, the AOB Champion in Kansas City and the AOB Champion in Louisville in 2017. At the 2021 Cattlemen’s Congress, her daughters were the
CHELSIE COW FAMILY The Chelsie cows or the “Red’s” as we call them here, are super special to me. We have four full sisters that all won at the national level and continue to raise daughters that are doing the same. Recently the “Original Red or 210Z” as some know her produced the Reserve Grand Champion Shorthorn Female “Bob” at this year’s Cattlemen’s Congress for Keagan Steck. Keagan has a heck of a run with Bob, as she was the named Reserve National Champion as a calf at the National Western Stock Show, won the American Royal and was Reserve Grand Champion at the 2020 NAILE. It’s special that Keagan shows a daughter of 210Z, as we purchased her mother from his parents – Craig and Stephanie Steck and their partner Kevin Heath.
of his time traveling the country to seek out these amazing females for our program. He also relied on several great cattlemen, like Jim Bloomberg, for their opinion on her. They all felt the way we did--she was special and could be an asset in our herd and would be the donor we needed when the show halter was taken off. Sure enough, CoCo is the dam of the Supreme Champion Open Female at the 2021 Cattlemen’s Congress for Lauren May and Purple Reign Cattle Company.
MARCH/APRIL 2021
BRED AND OWNED Recently, I’ve personally been on a campaign to exhibit my bred and owned heifers on the National level. To me, this is the true test of how selecting cows that can also be show heifers has paid off for us. And, all of the 2021 OKC champions are out of my past show heifers. I love how they are coming full circle.
Grand and Reserve Grand MaineTainers, and the Reserve Grand Champion Foundation Simmental. Not sure, how many cows have been the dam of three breed champions at one national show and these are just out of her second and third calf crop. Her first daughter was a Bismarck that I campaigned to many titles in 2019.

erhaps one of the most interesting and underappreciated places at any livestock show is the staging area. For exhibitors, stepping into staging means butterflies and an excess of nervous energy. It is the final chance to fluff, shine, and perfect your animal before hitting the show ring. For parents, it is an opportunity to offer last second advice; keep her head up, make sure to leave yourself plenty of space, and for gosh sakes pay attention to where the judge is! What happens in staging is the same at every show across the country, but what makes it interesting is that each exhibitor has a unique story that has brought them to this point. These stories are as colorful as the spray cans littering the ground around their chutes and invoke emotions from elation to frustration. They are also the real stories of the livestock industry. Stories that are often distorted, fabricated, or just plain falsified by social media and the internet. It is these stories and the chance to tell them in a positive light that launched one group of Iowa high school students
into action. The CAC Media Group was founded in 2017 with a goal of increasing awareness about current agricultural issues and combating the negative portrayal often painted by those not directly involved in agriculture. “Having the chance to showcase other youth being successful in agriculture is one of my favorite parts about the program,” said high school junior Megan Clark. “I love hearing what other students are doing around their farms and the unique ways they find to innovate and solve problems.” The livestock industry is one area that the members of CAC are extremely passionate about. In fact, a large portion of the work they do revolves around animal agriculture. Each of them has grown up with a different species of livestock and they feel it is crucial in a time where it is easy to target producers, that they be a voice that represents the industry in a positive light. Telling the story of the livestock industry is something Clark is doing in a big way. She has been selected to give
a TEDx Talk about misconceptions in animal agriculture. Her piece is called “What I Wish You Would Ask Me” and challenges consumers to start conversations with producers about how they care for their animals and how the food on their plates is actually produced. “Showing cattle has given me focus and direction in my life,” said Clark. “Yet there are so many people out there that do not understand what we do and want to give us a bad name because of what they read on social media. I am hoping that my TEDx Talk will invite them to reach out and ask questions instead of making the assumption that all farmers are bad.” In addition to Clark’s talk, the team worked with an Iowa hog showman to give his account of the show industry through a video they shot last summer called “A Showman’s Story.” The video focused on the internal monologue of the showman and the work it takes to prepare animals for competitive exhibition.
“Working across so many different media platforms has really allowed me to find my place in the industry,” said
They will also be rolling out their mentor’s project designed to tell the stories of some of the great mentors in the livestock industry and help link them to youth who may be interested in the unique aspects of their businesses. “This mentor’s project is something we have been thinking about for a long time,” said member Jake VanderHeiden. “Being a part of this group, we have had the chance to see firsthand the impact of positive mentorship. We see it as another way to continue to highlight the good happening in agriculture.” In a time when it is trendy to criticize farming practices, CAC members understand the need to speak up for their industry. It is on this stage that all livestock exhibitors have a chance to shine. Every showman has a story and those narratives are what we need to truly make a difference. For more information about the CAC Media Group or to get involved in their mentor’s project, you can check them out on Facebook at CAC Media Group or Instagram at CAC_Media_Group. •

All members of the CAC Media team agree that being able to experience the different aspects of agricultural journalism and media coverage has helped them plan for their future in a multitude of ways.
The group has several new projects they are embarking on for 2021 including partnering on a youth cattle conference dedicated to helping young producers fill in their knowledge gaps when it comes to creating feed rations, diagnosing illness, and more.
MARCH/APRIL 2021
This video project opened the door for the team to host their own agricultural television show, Agri-Vision. After wrapping up their first season on air, CAC members joined with producers from RFD-TV and started showcasing other students’ agricultural journeys.
senior Kesley Holdgrafer. “I know what I want to do with my future because I have had the opportunity to try out roles and have found my voice in journalism.”

MiniCHILI
RELLENOS Cheesy with just a bit of a kick! This super simple recipe is perfect as a finger food, side dish or main course. They can be served plain or with dipping sauce of your choice; cheese queso, guacamole, salsa, and my personal favorite homemade green chili!
INGREDIENTS
• 3-4 Medium to Large Peppers (Poblano or Anaheim) • 1 Block of Mozzarelle Cheese (Shredded) • 1 Pkg. of Wonton Wrappers • Oil for Frying
DIRECTIONS
Fire roast green chilies over an open flame or in your oven on broil. Make sure that all sides of the peppers are charred. Place roasted peppers in a zip lock baggie or container with a lid and let sweat while they come back down to room temperature. Once the peppers are cool run remove the charred skins, stems, seeds, and ribs inside the peppers. Run under water to clean then pat dry. Slice peppers into small, narrow strips about an inch to inch and half long (they will need to fit inside the wrappers rolled up. Use photo as reference) Work with only 1-4 wrappers at a time as they will dry out. Keep others covered with plastic until you need them. To assemble, place a strip of roasted pepper in the middle of the wrapper and a small pinch of cheese (do not over
Laurie’s #Homemade
stuff or they will leak when you fry them). Fold one side of the wrapper over the pepper, fold in the two sides, then dab the unfolded side with a small amount of water to help seal it and fold it over like an envelope. Make sure all the cheese and peppers are completely enclosed. They will look like tiny little burritos :) Repeat until you are out of ingredients or until you have the desired amount that you want. In a large skillet heat enough oil to generously cover the bottom on medium high until hot but not smoking. Fry in batches to not over crowd, cook until a nice caramel brown on all sides (this happens fast!) Side tip: you can also deep fry or use an air fryer if you prefer. Drain on a plate covered with several paper towels to absorb excess grease then transfer to serving dish. Serve plain or with your choice of dipping sauce; cheese queso, guacamole, salsa, and my personal favorite homemade green chili! Enjoy! I always make more than I need because they are great leftovers as well! •
