When the cops arrived, however, all was quiet. According to Fox News, Madonna threw a “wild” Gypsy-themed party. The festivities included other Hamptonites including “Live!” co-host Kelly Ripa, her husband, Mark Consuelos, and Andy Cohen, host of Watch What Happens Live.

NO LEMONADE FOR YOU Nor is Jerry Seinfeld immune from ticked off members of the community. According to the New York Post,“a sourpuss neighbor put the squeeze on” the comic’s family lemonade stand set up on the roadside near his East Hampton estate. PLUM CRAZY Plum Island, the subject of conspiracy theories and even an eponymous bestseller, will soon be auctioned off by the federal government.The 840-acre unspoiled spot, east of Orient Point in Gardiner’s Bay, boasts miles of shoreline, large tracts of forest, and a lighthouse. But don’t start planning your dream house yet. Designated as a “research district,” it can only be developed for

reasons of research or education. There’s another catch. Its current inhabitants suffer from foot-andmouth disease – the remote island has been the center of research on the condition. Fortunately, the disease is harmless to humans and is only contagious among cloven-hoofed animals. The date of the auction will be set when a new location in Kansas is ready to host island’s menagerie of pigs, sheep and cows.

LAND’S END One of the last remaining contiguous parcels of land in Southampton has been put on the market for $34 million. The 20-acre estate with a whopping 3,165 feet of frontage on Bullhead Bay, sunset views across Ram Island and Bullhead and Peconic bays, and a pond boasts a waterside pool and deep-water dock. PRIVATE SCREENING ROOMS ARE THE NEW MUST HAVES FOR THE HOME

I

t wasn’t so long ago that a poolhouse and a fullyequipped gym were standard features of every highvalue property in the Hamptons. But the amenity du jour in high value homes is a private screening room.We don’t mean “media rooms”--essentially large dens with outsized flat screen TVs. Nor are we referring to finished basements kitted out with clunky DVD players, those relics of the pre-digital age. We’re talking about small movie theaters, complete with auditorium-style seating, professional-quality projectors, and full-size screens. Bryan Midlam, an associate broker at Corcoran, says, “Years ago when I saw my first home move theater it was really old-timey with a Hollywood dressing room type of structure and a bar. Now they’re much more sophisticated. I’ve seen hundreds of them at this point.” Although there are exceptions--a great house in a fantastic location, for example--Midlam says that “anybody buying a new build for three or four million dollars and up, can expect it to be part of the deal.” Naturally, there are different grades of luxury and attention to detail. At its simplest, a new build might have a simple installation which the buyer can retrofit as desired. In those cases, the buyer will typically engage the services of an architect or an electronic integration company, which can act as a subcontractor and oversee and streamline the electronic aspects of the project. John Lovett, a co-owner of Sensoryphile, one such electronic integration company, says it’s not unusual for a top-ofthe-line installation to run over $2 million. It’s not just the leather recliners and popcorn machines, or the ultrahigh precision equipment that can drive up costs, but the expense of proper sound-proofing. “The best private screening rooms are virtually rooms-within-rooms,” says Lovett. “Clients who want to recreate the quality of a

commercial cinema will often isolate the room from the rest of the house, to limit the amount of noise that leaves the theater so they can really blast the sound.” And then there’s staffing to consider. Midlam says it isn’t uncommon for people to hire ushers to seat guests during screenings. Those who wish to show first-run films will need to pay steep licensing fees and hire a projectionist. “People will go to surprising lengths to achieve a home theater experience,” says Midlam, who recalls visiting one such space that had at least sixty seats. “This place was well below ground and had a high-domed ceiling and a retractable screen.You know the kind that drops down? It was kind of crazy to think that you were in someone’s home.” How did we go from public cinema to the invitationonly home theater? One of the first and most cuttingedge private screening rooms on the East Coast was in the home of Joseph P. Kennedy, father of President John F. Kennedy. In the 1920s, Kennedy was tasked with the reorganization and refinancing of a number of major film studios. According to an account of that part of his career, Joseph P. Kennedy Presents: His Hollywood Years by Carl Beauchamp, Kennedy transformed the basement of his Hyannisport summer home into a cinema. “The finest commercial projectors were installed behind a steel door for fire protection and there was plenty of room for the audience to view the films in comfort.” Given the high flammability of nitrate-based film stock--hence those fireproof steel doors--home screening rooms remained a rarity until the nineteen fifties when the motion picture industry adopted safety film, essentially cellulose treated with acetate. But even

then, private screening rooms were most often found in the homes of movie people--studio heads, directors of blockbuster films, top actors, and the like. For that crowd, the private screening room was both tool of the trade and a symbol of success. And to be invited to a private screening also carried social cachet. With the birth of the video rental industry in the late 1970s came the advent of the ‘media room.’ Suddenly you no longer had to be an industry tycoon or even very rich to watch movies from the comfort of your own bean bag. Perhaps in reaction to the mass marketing of these spaces, some members of the financial elite converted the basements of their houses into bona fide cinemas, complete with a projectionist’s booth. he 23rd Annual Hamptons International Film Festival (HIFF) will take place October 8-12, 2015.The festival was originally founded to celebrate Independent Filmmakers in the genres of long, short, fiction, and documentary films. Approximately 25,000 visitors will attend the Film Festival with about 130 films and over 20 events in 14 venues across the East End. Over 30 countries are represented in the slate of films with cash and inkind prizes totaling $170,000. The festival’s diverse programs attract celebrities from around the world to the Hamptons as well as those interested in film, culture, and the famed East End. Stuart Match Suna, a founding board member of the festival in 1992, will be stepping down from his Chairman position after this year’s festival, but will continue to support HIFF as Chair Emeritus. Newly elected Co-Chairmen of the HIFF Board of Directors, Alec Baldwin and Randy Mastro, will assume their roles after the end of this year’s festival. A gala honoring many industries and celebrities will highlight Stuart Match Suna and his 18 years of service, on Sunday, October 11. Alec Baldwin has been a HIFF board member for the past decade and a longtime supporter of the festival, producing its SummerDocs series for the past seven years. East Hampton Opening Night, Thursday, October 8, will feature James Vanderbilt’s Truth, starring Robert

all is the time to plant bulbs that reward us with beautiful flowers next spring and summer. Nurseries and garden centers offer the familiar daffodils, narcissus, crocuses, tulips and lilies now.These classic garden flowers are favorites, but there are many less well-known but equally beautiful bulbous flowers you can plant now for effortless, eye-catching color in next year’s landscape. One group that deserves to be better known is the alliums. This clan includes onions and garlic, but also a host of lovely ornamentals that produce large, spherical flowers that bloom atop tall, straight stems in summer. Surprisingly, all of these disparate alliums belong to the same plant family as lilies, those classics of bridal bouquets and flower gardens. Who would have thought they’d be related? The clue lies in their leaves—all these plants have strap-shaped leaves that grow in a clump from the base of the plant. Alliums are easy to grow, dramatic and sculptural in the garden, and they’re deer-proof, too. Their flowers consist of star-shaped florets on long tubes that are

gathered into round, or in some cases oval, clusters— they look like balls or balloons floating among the other plants in the garden when they bloom. They are eye-catching in the middle ground of a bed or border, where they stand between taller background plants and shorter front-of-the-garden flowers. Add some to your landscape for a touch of drama…or whimsy. There are lots of beautiful flowering alliums. Here are a few to try for yourself. The popular variety Globemaster is widely available and sports big violet globes of densely packed starshaped florets on stems almost 3 feet tall. The flowers last for almost a month. Allium christophii, called star of Persia, has a delicate, lacy look. Its large, ball-shaped flowers 10 to 12 inches in diameter (the biggest of any of the garden alliums) are made up of star-shaped florets with narrow petals, purplish pink with a metallic sheen, on thin stems that create airy, graceful balls. Star of Persia grows 2 to 3 feet high and thrives in well-drained soil. They make good cut flowers. Allium caeruleum, or blue allium, has bright sky blue, starshaped flowers. Such true blue coloring is uncommon

in the plant world. This species is more petite than many of the other flower garden alliums, growing a foot or so high. Their compact size makes them easy to mix among other flowers near the front of a bed or border. If a flight of fancy would add new life to your flower garden, plant Allium schubertii. This one looks like fireworks on a stem; its florets spray out on pale, rosy pink filaments from a central point. For fragrance, seek out the variety Gladiator, whose softball-size globes of lavender-blue are delightfully scented. For a cool touch of white, try Mount Everest, whose flowers will remind you of snowballs in summer. You can find some alliums available as blooming-size plants in local nurseries and garden centers in spring, ahead of when they normally bloom in the garden. For a wider selection, seek out online sources where you can buy bulbs to plant in fall, when most of the garden work is winding down. n a warm summer night, August 27, 2015, The Oceans Institute of the Montauk Lighthouse Museum, aka the Montauk Surf Museum celebrated its grand opening, set against a brilliant sky. Situated between the Montauk Point Lighthouse and the WWII Fire Control Tower, the Montauk Surf Museum is located in the original Fog Signal House constructed in 1896. The 1,000 square-foot white brick building originally housing the generator for the Montauk Point Lighthouse fog siren, sits atop a 68-foot-high bluff overlooking the surf spots, “Alamo” and “Turtle Cove.” The Montauk Surf Museum’s grand opening coincided with the 50th Anniversary of “The Endless Summer” film by Bruce Brown. The movie was shown on a large outdoor screen at the first “soft” opening on July 25, where legendary surfer Tony Villar was among those attending. At the August opening, many local surfers and some celebrities were present, including singer-songwriter and surfer Jimmy Buffett, who along with curator Bettina Stelle and surfer Russell “Rusty” Drumm, acting curator of the museum, launched the Kickstarter campaign. Also instrumental were Board members Chris Gentile, Julie Gilhart, John Chimples, Ed Patrowicz, public relations coordinator Michelle Swavely, and Montauk Point Lighthouse Committee member, Greg Donohue. Tony Caramanico, a legendary Montauk surfer

since the 1960s, who attended the opening, has several surfboards on loan to the museum from his own collection and plans to loan two replicas of the original surfboards from “The Endless Summer” movie that he bought at the live auction days before in Washington D.C. “The Endless Summer” film, iconic poster, and a surfboard shaped by Hawaiian surfer Duke Kahanamoku (1890-1968), widely credited with popularizing the sport of surfing, were inducted into the Smithsonian National Museum of American History, hosted by The Surfing Heritage & Culture Center (SHACC) on August 21, 2015. “The Endless Summer” filmmaker Bruce Brown, the stars of the film, Robert August and Mike Hynson, and Caramanico were among the luminaries at this historic event in Washington D.C. The crowd of about 300 at Thursday night’s grand opening of the Montauk Surf Museum included people from all walks of life: surfers, celebrities, and locals, joined together in celebration of their favorite pastime, surfing. All were gathered in and around this historic building under the moonlit sky to pay homage to a popular sport in Montauk that at first came under great scrutiny by the town. As letters and plaques on the walls testify, the early beginnings of surfing in Montauk had a choppy start as the East Hampton Town Board was set to ban surfing, due to its belief that it brought in an “unruly

element.” Surfers had to agree to register with the town in the summer of 1967 by wearing bronze medallions on leather thongs around their necks or on their board shorts, identifying them as law-abiding community members. One father writes to supporter Reverend Friend, “To my surprise, I found that the group of kids who surfed were not belligerant [sic], rude, or profane, but on the contrary, they were most polite, mannerly and obsessed with just one thing – the surf!” A mother writes of her son serving in the Vietnam War, “We hope the Montauk Association for the Preservation of Surfing, can keep a place at Ditch Planes [sic] open so that when the boys come home, if they come home from the war, they will be able to surf out at Montauk.” Original medallions from the ’60s are displayed on surfer mannequins in a beach diorama along with other surfing memorabilia exhibited at the museum. The Montauk Surf Museum will feature rotating exhibits in the summer months. Several installations and displays will illustrate the many aspects of surfing, from the origins of waves to the evolution of surfboard design and wetsuit technology, to coastal phenomena such as erosion and sea-level rise. In “The End,” the Montauk Surf Museum is off to a great start, as the popular sport of surfing will continue to evolve from one generation to the next.
