Editor’s Note

If you have blue eyes, then call me Cousin and invite me to a reunion, because we are family.

Researchers at the University of Copenhagen tracked down a genetic mutation that took place between 6,000 and 10,000 years ago that caused all blueeyed humans. For us blue-eyes, our common ancestor probably came from Estonia where 99% of the people are blue-eyed.

I mention this because Evince is remembering the importance of family in this issue. Read about two local businesses that are family-owned-and-operated: Shorty’s Bakery (page 19) and Cibo 316 (page 3). If you work as hard as these couples, you will need to relax. Read Jason Bookheimer’s recreational plans for the family in The Best Campout Ever Could Be in Your Backyard (page 18).

Maybe your family doesn’t live close to you. Read Linda Lemery’s Extending the Meaning of Family for a new perspective on who your family might be. hen Danvillians, Agostino and Brandi Pugliese, were married in 2002, they stayed close to home for their honeymoon.

“The first night we ever slept in our new house was our wedding night,” Brandi says, adding casually, “We built our house while planning a wedding.”

For most people, combining those two projects might seem overwhelming, but not for this couple, who added a third task --working seven days a week as partners in Village’s Pizza on Franklin Turnpike. “We worked together over 40 hours every week opening and closing until the day we were married,” she recalls and then states the obvious, “It was a lot of hard work.”

They sold that restaurant in 2004, a few months after purchasing Katie’s Soft Pretzels in Piedmont Mall in November 2003. While their business plans were progressing at a good pace, the family plans were too. “Our son, Biagio, was born in 2004 and daughter Giada was born in 2006,” says Brandi.

“Giada was born in August and in October we opened Dell Anno’s Pizzeria in Brosville. It was a very big challenge,” she adds with a tranquility that belies the physical and emotional test it must have been.

The greatest dilemma for the goal-driven duo has always been separating work from home, but they have a solution. “Yesterday, we pretended the phones were dead and went to the zoo,” Brandi laughs and Agostino confirms with a smile, “It works.”

Taking a day off probably doesn’t feel right, especially because Agostino is the general contractor for their newest business, 316 Cibo on Main Street, in downtown Danville.

“I have a strong drive to accomplish different things... sometimes too many,” he admits. Brandi interjects, “Ever since he was a teenager, he has known what he wanted. He will go after it and will achieve it.”

Agostino, who lived in Italy for part of his childhood, verifies her statement, “I started working at Ruffino’s in Piedmont Mall with my dad (the owner) when I was 15, stayed there until I was 26, and then worked at Village’s Pizza. After opening Dell Anno’s, I wanted to do something different.” That led to the creation of 316 Cibo. “It will serve fresh salad ingredients and sandwich breads including panini. It will be very quick, but still very good food--a fast

by Joyce Wilburn casual restaurant along the lines of a Panera,” he says, adding, “Everything will be made in front of you.”

“We will also have a full coffee bar with illy coffee, the number one coffee in Italy,” Brandi interjects and then explains, “I took a class in New York taught by the champion barista in Italy and learned how to brew the perfect cup of coffee.”

The ambition and hard work never ends for this couple. It comes as no surprise even to a casual observer that their favorite pastime is staying at home with

the children and enjoying a meal together. Maybe that is why the upstairs at 316 Cibo has been converted into an office for them and a play space for the children when mom and dad are working.

It’s obvious that no matter what Brandi and Agostino are doing, home is not far away.

• Watch for the grand opening of 316 Cibo at 316 Main Street sometime this summer. (That’s pronounced Chee-bo and it’s Italian for food.)

other day after looking up the word loquacious. Those words would be the antonyms to the word which probably describes you to a tee. Don’t get me wrong. If certain people call you on the phone, I have seen you talk for hours and I do mean hours. When we talk, however, within two minutes your eyes are closed and you are sleeping. That’s the reason that every time you ask me to watch TV with you or go to a movie with you, I know that I will see them alone.

I know you work hard, get up early and put in a good 10hour day. I understand your need to sleep standing up or sitting. I want to make this marriage work and I believe that communication, dedication and having someone who can make good potato salad is the secret to a long and prosperous relationship.

With that said, I offer you this recommendation.

Communication for us from now on will be when you call me on my cell phone. I have unlimited minutes and it seems to me that since you talk to all your friends for hours there is no reason why this couldn’t work for us. That seems to be the only way you can stay awake and I can talk for hours keeping the lines of communication open. Dedication is certainly important and I see that you spend a lot of time looking up words in the dictionary to describe me. Finally, potato salad. A woman who cannot satisfy her man with a good potato salad should probably spend more time with his mother who makes great potato salad.

I hope I have not hit a nerve here.

Since I am a loquacious person, I just wanted to exercise my right to inform you of what constitutes a good marriage. The weather changes daily; Osama is no longer with us; I learned a new word this month. Thanks for being a good teacher.

To Be or Not to Be Loquacious I ran across the word loquacious the other day and immediately thought about you. Aren’t you excited that one little word brings you to my most intimate thoughts?

You have quite a following on Facebook with your sayings and notable quotes. One lady expounded her love for you and said she enjoyed having coffee with you every morning. I looked around the kitchen for a hidden camera.

Don’t worry, I figured it out.

You really do have a lot to say, but when you see me falling asleep while you’re talking, you should realize that I’m on information overload. Your voice is soothing to me when I can’t sleep, that is why I sometimes ask you to tell me a bedtime story.

You describe yourself as being very opinionated and will offer your thoughts without being asked. I know other people who are like that, which results in a barrage of unsolicited information that usually leaves me defending myself. I have decided that I, too, am entitled to my opinions without having to explain why I feel the way I do. I’m not a loquacious person. I prefer to keep my thoughts to myself.

My aunt, a teacher, told me that after she retired, she stopped voicing her opinions because no one was interested in them anymore. Maybe I’ve reached that same plateau. If anyone wants to know how I feel about something, they’ll ask; otherwise, we can talk about the weather or Osama bin Laden. Oops! You didn’t ask my opinion about that situation.

Tracing Your Family History

The family is the basic unit of society and tracing your family history can be very interesting and informative.

Perhaps a good place to start is with your great-grandparents. Most people know the identity of their grandparents and, if not, information about them can usually be found rather easily. Their parents will be your great-grandparents of whom there will be eight, four male and four female.

If you do not have information about them, there are resources in the Danville Public Library, 511 Patton Street, and at the Virginia-North Carolina Piedmont Genealogical Society that is housed upstairs in the DPL building. The Society can be very helpful in finding that information, particularly if your greatgrandparents were from the Danville area or from some other area where family records are readily available.

The Internet can sometimes be helpful in finding information.

Websites, such as www.dangene.net, can also often be of help in finding and organizing family information.

A good way to organize and record your family information, if you do not have a computer program, is to prepare a large chart with eight horizontal rows and seven vertical columns. Record information as follows: • Column 1: list the names of your great-grandparents keeping spouses adjacent to each other.

• Column 2: enter the birth and death dates of each person shown in Column 1 opposite each name.

• Column 3: record the marriage

date of each person in Column 1 (If the person had more than one marriage, you may wish to record only the one that resulted in the birth of a grandparent.)

Column 4: record the places that the person in Column 1 lived (This may take a number of entries with dates if you have them.)

Column 5: list places that the person in Column 1 worked (Again, this may require a number of entries with dates if you have them.)

Column 6: enter the location of the remains of the great-grandparent listed in Column 1 (In most cases, this will be a burial site.)

Column 7: List the children of your great-grandparents: they will be your grandparents and your great aunts and uncles, just as the children of your grandparents are your parents and your aunts and uncles.

When you have obtained and recorded all of the information required in the chart, you will have a good start on your family history.

Maybe in the process the genealogy bug will bite you, and you will want to go further.

The VA NC Piedmont Genealogy Society meets every month on the top floor of the Danville Public Library on Patton Street at 6:30 p.m. on dates that are posted and published in advance. All meetings are open to the public.

Danville Harvest Jubilee Presents The

2011 Summer Concert Series

The Danville Harvest Jubilee Summer Concert Series proudly presents the 2011 Summer Concert Series. This summer, Carrington Pavilion will play to host to three of country music’s biggest performers.

On Saturday, June 4, Danville welcomes Colt Ford with special guest Corey Smith.

Ford, fresh off the success of his latest release Every Chance I Get is sure to get the crowd going with his hits “Cold Beer”, “Chicken & Biscuits”, and his current hit “Country Thang.” Tickets range from $22.00 for lawn seating to $32.50 for reserved.

Showtime is 6 p.m.

The 2011 Summer Concert Series continues on Saturday, July 2, when Darius Rucker comes to town. Rucker, known for the pop hits with his band Hootie and the Blowfish, has taken the country music world by storm. In 2009, Rucker was named New Artist of the Year by the Country Music Association. Armed with the number-one singles, “Don’t Think I Don’t Think About It”, “It Won’t Be Like This for Long”, and “Alright”, Darius Rucker is a show you don’t want to miss. On Friday, July 29, country music legend, Montgomery Gentry, will lace up its “hillbilly shoes” and call Danville home for one special evening. The duo consisting of Eddie Montgomery and Troy Gentry have paved a storied career, including a 2009 induction into the Grand Ole Opry. Other accolades include the 1999 Favorite New Country Artist title given by the American Music Awards and the Academy of Country Music award for Best New Group in 2000. With an extensive catalog of hits, Montgomery Gentry will have the crowd singing all night. Tickets will be available soon.

Evince Magazine “WAIT! I hear somebody,” I hissed to my nephew, Andrew. We’d ducked out of sight from the hotel night watchman and were making a break for the elevator. A few seconds later when I thought the coast was clear, I barked like a flight sergeant commanding his squadron to jump, “Go-go-go-go!”

My nerves were shot. I was new to this.

“Dear God, please don’t let anyone else get on this thing,” I prayed as he pushed the button.

I’d never smuggled a bed into a hotel before....or out of one for that matter. However, that week in Orlando, it had become a nightly ritual. I swear those Griswolds take better trips than we do. You know the crazy family in the Vacation movies where Chevy Chase plays the father. Except when they headed to Walley World, they had fewer mishaps than we did. The best thing that happened on our trip was getting new luggage after Southwest destroyed mine.

Through twists of fate entirely too complicated to explain, my sister and I got more than we bargained for when we visited her children over Christmas. We knew they’d be stopping by our hotel room to see us. What we didn’t know was that they were coming to stay, bringing both their bags and their “baggage.” Necessity is the mother of invention, especially when you’re out-of-town, flat broke, and the mother of twins with big problems. Or their aunt.

I’m not exaggerating that Diane and I barely had two nickels to rub together and had no business being there in the first place. Our room was not only tiny, but dirty.

The only amenity it sported was a broken compact refrigerator. Then again, I’m sure this joint ordinarily rents by the hour.

Even if we could have afforded it, we couldn’t have stayed anywhere else because of the thousands of families in town to visit a giant mouse. We didn’t want to tip our hand about our stowaways because the rates would be higher. We did what we had to do. We bought a blow-up mattress for $10 at Walgreens.

Well, in the winter, it’s a mattress.

In the summer, it’s a pool float.

The unbudgeted care and feeding of these two turned us to a life of crime. We stole linens and soap from housekeeping carts. We stashed extra cereal boxes and apples in our pockets from the free breakfast area. We

This trip went from restful to stressful. One night I treated everyone to the best restaurant around...a nasty Waffle House in the parking lot beside us. The meal cost $1,500. Diane took one bite of sausage, broke a tooth and had to get a crown.

Just when you think it can’t get worse, it does, which brings me back to the bed. The one that would not stay blown up and had to be taken to a gas station every night to be inflated. Being inconspicuous getting it in and out of the hotel was only part of our challenge. We couldn’t draw attention to ourselves on the road either, but that wasn’t as easy as it sounds, since we’d rented a car with a faulty hood latch.

We’d shut it and it’d flap up like a Jack-in-the-Box, so once it stayed put...we left it alone. Being in a neighborhood where the businesses adorn their windows with steel rods and barbed wire turned out to be a blessing in disguise. Since the police were so busy fighting real crime, they didn’t have time to stop a car with a mattress sticking out its opened door.

One night the problems escalated to so off-the-charts awful that I couldn’t sleep. I had a little pity party about 3:00 a.m. thinking that I’d taught a night class for a semester to pay for this trip. I could have gone on a cruise for less money, but instead, I was stuck in an expensive dump with nothing to show for it. I sat up to take inventory of the situation.

Andrew was on the floor with the ironing board wedged against him...our makeshift shelf for suitcases. Phillip was curled in a ball to keep his head from falling into the hole that the pullout sofa left when opened. Diane was breathing in rhythm with her sleep machine tuned to the annoying sound of chirping crickets.

I fluffed my pillow to give sleep another try. Right before I shut my eyes, I saw a thumbs-up sign from Drew appear in the air above my feet. I smiled. In spite of it all, I was with the people who mattered most. My sister...my best friend.

My nephews...my children. My family. Who cares if we had to crawl all over each other to make our beds. I was just thankful we were all there together to lie in them.

ome on, girl, hand over.

Don’t get hurt,” the man said.

He had come from behind Karen Thaxton as she got out of her Toyota Camry. He had gripped her right arm coarsely, jammed something hard into her back. Karen knew what her self-defense class said about surviving and she tried to stay calm, tried to focus on details that would keep her alive. Karen remembered the man’s voice being rough but high, like a child grown too quick and angry about it. Still, foreknowledge seemed to her no protection against the moment. Karen held onto the purse long after it should have been gone, right up until the man started shoving her, just until he began to reach around her, his hand barely touching the edge of the seam of her purse by her left breast. Inside her purse, all her wallet contained was her college I.D., seventeen dollars, and some pictures.

She wanted to ask for the pictures but recovered enough not to say anything.

She felt his breath while she held hers, one second, two, three.

During all this, Karen saw some woman in lime green curlers blinking and pushing a shopping cart by Karen’s blue car; she seemed to realize what was happening, then rushed into the store. The man cursed, ran into the woods behind the parking lot but didn’t drop the purse. And for a few minutes, Karen just stood there in the parking lot of the grocery store as a manager rushed out toward her.

That was Friday. The family reunion was tomorrow. Karen went home without the ham and honey mustard, took a small scolding from her mother for forgetfulness. The robbery was the third thing she never planned to tell.

“Love ain’t easy; it’s a fight, but there is love if you want it.” That’s what the television evangelist said on

Cable Channel 503 at about midnight.

It was one of those low res channels, as if filmed through slightly blurry plastic wrap. Pastor Bale shook his fist with a black Bible in it, the thumb on the outside visible to the viewers, his other fingers hidden. “But only if you want it.”

That was all Karen’s mother, Regina, heard before she turned the channel to a late night local news station.

The robberies started again in June this time. And one happened during the daytime this time, closer to her town.

She changed the channel to a home improvement show that discussed the merits of an under-mount sink. She watched for a while, but then turned it off. Beside her, Mike, her husband, snored softly, then not so softly.

The family reunion was in a few hours. Regina got up to get the recipe for her mother’s pineapple-upsidedown cake before she remembered her mother (Ann) no longer lived in the home with her, a mother who no longer knew her or even looked her way when she entered the nursing home room.

Stepping into the hallway, Regina saw her own daughter staring out into the night sky in front of an open living room window and thought something wasn’t right, but just couldn’t face any more sorrow. Eyes wide in the darkness, Regina went back to bed.

Those pictures in my wallet, Karen thought. She gently touched the swell of her belly. She risked her life and could only remember a single photograph, the one of the family when she was small, a picture with no negative, taken at one of those fun photo booths. Cost a dollar back then. That picture was probably in some woods or creek now, she thought.

She touched the swell again, her hand moving in slow circles. His picture was in there too, Baxter, 21 now, gone back east over summer break after she told him. She knew she wouldn’t see him

much anymore. Karen had wanted a love like her mother’s and father’s, but now her plans were ashes. Karen squinted her eyes against the pain, then shrugged, just counting the stars, her hand still on her belly - the second thing she never planned to tell her mother.

But a mother knows. Although Regina secretly thought it would be her sister Clarisse’s daughter, Laurel, and not her Karen. Still, as she put the ketchup, relish, and potato salad into the picnic basket, she reached over and took Karen’s hand. The family went to the Sunnyvale Nursing Home off Carlisle Street; they sat with paper plates on their knees and ate with the silver-colored plastic ware, sat with a mother that couldn’t hold her heart, couldn’t remember her children, was just lost. Regina kept looking at Karen who kept looking into windows and only alternately smiling. Still, they pressed on. Later in the day, back at the house, even when Tim, Clarisse’s ex, showed up and went to the garage with Mike for cold beer, everyone ate, laughed, and smiled. Regina leaned over quickly and pulled her daughter to her while putting the pickles away. Regina grabbed Karen’s arm, “I don’t care what it is. It’ll be all right, okay?” Karen nodded but said nothing.

Karen knew which story to tell her mother, which words to say. The baby and Baxter, but she would never tell about the robbery. A strange thing to keep inside, but that robbery seemed

as intimate as a forced kiss. “Come on, girl, hand over. Don’t get hurt,” the robber had said. But she was hurt and the anger came now. What she could have done, should have said, played in cinematic precision in her head.

Should she say that she didn’t feel safe in open spaces? Should she tell that she scanned the crowd for his face, a robber she never saw, or for that lover who left her? She would tell her mother she lost her wallet, rather than make her worry. She would tell her mother she left Baxter, have her think she had caught the new independence of young girls these days. How to say in moments of crisis all reason failed her.

Late that night, her mother was riffling through the channels again, but Karen didn’t go into her mother’s room.

She heard the reruns, even heard Pastor Bale again, but didn’t believe she’d care to watch or listen to either. Instead, she looked out another window. She thought how, for the first time in her 20 years, all her confidence was gone, how if the robber had asked, she would have walked with him, scared and knowing she should not go. She was not sure things would work out, that anything would be much better, that she would not be forever like some trapped dog baying at the moon while a storm was gathering, and that feeling was the first thing she would never tell her mother; it startled her so that she could tell it to herself.

Family and friends are everything. I am so grateful to have them.

Many of the folks in the Dan River Region come from large extended families who have lived in the area for generations. They have yearly reunions and holiday exchanges and debates over who’s going to bring what covered dish to the next family gathering. But we’re transplants to the area; plus we are a small family. My husband and I come from Illinois. You can tell by our accents, even after 30 years here in Danville. Our sons are in California and Illinois and we don’t see them often. My husband’s family is scattered throughout the states of Colorado, Minnesota, Texas, and Washington.

My extended family is even worse.

Although I see my mom daily because she lives in Danville, and I have a cousin in Minnesota, the rest of my relatives are in Denmark.

Although having an ocean between us means there are no drop-in visits or covered- dish

suppers, one of the Danes comes to the U.S. occasionally. That’s a highlight of our year. For example, my cousin Nina was here in April.

She teaches English and Danish in a Copenhagen high school, loves people, loves to travel, and has that wickedly droll Danish family sense of humor. We laugh from the time she arrives to the time she leaves.

It’s like that with the rest of the Danes as well; it’s when the echoes of laughter die away from those visits that I miss my family the most.

For us, as perhaps for others whose blood relatives are scattered over multiple states or continents, our friends supplement our family.

One lovely notion is that friends are the family we choose. They support and nurture us through the highs and lows of life. I have five girlfriends with whom I have at least 35 years of shared history.

Sometimes we go months without contact and then one of us calls and we pick up where we left off.

If one compares nurturing a network of family and friends to building a memory structure of relationships, the longest-known family and friends would be nearest the foundation. Friendships that have grown out of mutual respect in the workplace--and other newer friends--would be further up the wall, but the same mortar of love and respect and essential curiosity about life would serve to connect us all.

I’m grateful for these newer friends, for the interests we share, for the divergent viewpoints that force me to think harder about what I thought I already understood. I know I can call them for help, just as they know they can call me. It’s a special joy to hear about the times that these friends, connected through me, call each other to solve problems or explore ideas.

My point with this column is that however we define our families, whether they be blood relatives or family members by choice, these relationships help us celebrate the grand times and sustain us through the lean times. How we define family is unimportant; what’s important is how we nurture the relationships. And I thank you, dear readers, for helping me better understand that.

Evince Magazine marveled at each other’s purchases, shared euros, medicine, and hair conditioner, and helped navigate each other through crowded airports.

On the final evening, we celebrated a 50th wedding anniversary with dinner, music, and a serenade by a bel canto tenor. Sounds like wonderful family experiences, doesn’t it? The only thing missing were the feuds that sometimes erupt between relatives.

This verifies what Linda Lemery writes about in Extending the Meaning of Family on page 12.

Vacationing with Family

Do you like this picture of my family?

If you are thinking these people don’t look related, you are correct.

We share no common DNA, but for a brief time in May we shared everything else.

It began when Averett University’s Study Abroad Office sent out the

open-to-the-public invitation to explore Tuscany, Italy, with AU’s alumni and friends. After the positive responses were received, a new group of friends was formed and during the 10-day period of travel, the family developed.

We debated current issues over plates of pasta and glasses of vino, directed each other to the best gelato,

Connie and Sylvesta Jennings celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary with the AU group in Rome. They were married on June 11, 1961, at White Rock Baptist Church on Locust Lane in Danville.

I would like to nominate Robin Crutchfield, Decorating Consultant at Danville Paint & Supply on Monroe Street, for the Exceptional Customer Service Award.

I was preparing to do some serious painting and finally put some color on the walls. I really needed help in making sure everything tied together and complimented the cedar wood, rock fireplace, and copper accents in our home. I brought some samples into Danville Paint & Supply and starting working with Robin. After just a few minutes, I could tell that she had a good eye for color. Book Clubbing Caswell Book Club, submitted by Lucindy Willis, Ph.D. Who & When: Prior to my move to Caswell County to open the Yancey House Restaurant, I resided in Raleigh, taught at NCSU, and belonged to a small book club.

Each month we met in someone’s home to discuss a book selected by the hostess and eat a meal designed around the book. Our most memorable meeting took place in for a discussion of Dead Men Walking.

We sat on a screened back porch around a table covered with newspaper and feasted on a Louisiana crawfish boil with new potatoes and corn on the cob, drank cold beer, and sipped sweet tea.

Moving forward 15 years, I once again find myself a member of a reading group, this time in Yanceyville, North Carolina. The Caswell Book Club meets at Yancey House Restaurant at 9:30 a.m. the first Wednesday of every other month from September to May. Its 20-something members (most of whom are 50-something) come from varied backgrounds but are united in their love of the written word. Unlike themed book clubs, Caswell’s book selections are often eclectic and include both fiction and nonfiction. There are no quizzes and no one is put on the spot. If you have read the book -- great; if not, have a scone and a cup of tea or coffee and sit a spell. Most discussions are led by a club member. Occasionally guest speakers bless us with a visit.

The Best Campout Ever Could Be in Your Back Yard

by Jason Bookheimer Danville Parks, Recreation and Tourism Outdoor Recreation It can be a daunting task to come up with creative ideas that excite your children and their peers on a continual basis. Indoor sleepovers are fun, but an outside sleepover can be fresh and appealing. Most kids are fascinated and thrilled just to be outside much less spending an afternoon and night under the stars with family, friends, fun activities and food. Just the mention of campout can be enough to keep your child ecstatic all night, but don’t settle for simple; make it the best campout ever.

Before you throw the tent up in the backyard, check the weather forecast; be sure that it will not be too cool (below 50 degrees) or too hot (above 75 at night) with no chance of storms or rain. If the temperature is too cold, the kids will be freezing and will not want to camp again. The same goes for lying awake sweating all night.

Have alternate plans in case of a pop-up storm. Be forewarned that by early in the night your children may not feel comfortable. Don’t push the experience. If they are at the point where it is not fun anymore, then go inside. If you force them to campout, they may become resilient to the thought of it and it may be your last camping experience.

Never start your campout too early-- a couple hours before dark is a good time. Start with a cookout followed by outside games: going on a scavenger hunt, creating trail mix with multiple ingredients, playing animal games or hide-and- seek. At twilight, take time to watch the sun set and gaze at the stars as they begin to come out. Bring an astronomy book to educate and show your kids fun things in the sky. (We all could probably use a lesson on finding the Big and Little Dippers.)

When it’s dark, there is nothing better than an old-fashioned game of flashlight tag or telling goofy stories. Most of us do not have the luxury of a campfire in the backyard, so simulate it with lamps and flash lights covered with

orange and red plastic or paper surrounded by some logs or rocks.

Kids love this stuff. When the night comes to an end, fire up the grill, roast marshmallows, and indulge in s’mores.

Now comes the hard part--getting the kids to sleep. Realize that kids think it is cool and fun to stay up all night telling stories and that “mom and dad will never know we are up this late!”. Keep a watchful eye and ear on the campsite. Let your campers know it is OK, if they have to use the restroom, but be sure they tell you before they go into the house. Turn on a house light or a small light outside for safety and comfort. When the campers wake in the morning or when the sun rises and they come out of the tent, if they wait that long, have something fun to cook outside, like pancakes. Use your grill and a frying pan. Camp food always tastes better than what is cooked inside, because you’re so hungry.

Take the time to plan a campout and I guarantee it won’t be the last time you pitch a tent in the backyard. Q: Can you lose your hearing

from riding on a motorcycle?

the ear while riding a motorcycle can damage hearing. Traveling at 37 mph with an open helmet and no hearing protection, the ears are exposed to noise levels between 75 to 90 dB SPL. At speeds of 65 MPH the wind noise at the ear can be greater than 100 dB SPL. The Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) warns that exposure to 100 dB SPL noise or louder for more than 15 minutes can cause hearing loss and tinnitus. With motorcycle’s it’s not just wind noise that can damage hearing. Removing baffle from the muffler so that others can hear you also can damage hearing.

This can generate noise above 100 dB SPL. As a motorcycle rider myself, I am very aware of the affect wind can have on hearing. Our safest bet is using a full helmet and custom made hearing protection, as long as using hearing protection is not prohibited by state law.

A Family Business with All the Right Ingredients

by Joyce Wilburn When Sandra and Todd Kobke were searching for a name for their bakery business on Holt Garrison Parkway, they found inspiration in a surprising place. “We were driving to Florida to visit family and I was reading a children’s book, Little Nino’s Pizzeria, to our son, Abraham,” Sandra says explaining that it’s a story about a family that names a restaurant after their child.

“We liked the idea, but didn’t want to call our new bakery Abraham’s,” she recalls. To solve the dilemma, they settled on the nickname Todd had given to their toddler—Shorty.

Owning a bakery in Danville, Virginia, wasn’t in the couple’s original life plan. The New York natives met in St. Petersburg, Florida, dated for four years, and married in 1996. Three years later, Abraham was born. Todd was undecided on a career, but was prodded into action by Sandra after his student loan bills from St. Petersburg Jr. College came due.

“That’s when I went to work for Publix Super Market as a baker,” he says adding that he already had four years of baking experience in a NYC Italian bakery.

Life was good until a series of unfortunate events changed everything. Three hurricanes came close to their hometown; insurance cost doubled; property taxes rose.

“And the heat,” he says with a grimace, “I just couldn’t bear it anymore.” That’s when Sandra, who was working as a licensed practical nurse, took action again.

“I had always liked Virginia, had family in Richmond, and wanted to move,” she says while mixing the batter for scones early one Friday morning. “I searched the Internet and found a lot of information about this area, especially at realtor.com,” she remembers.

“We liked Danville because it’s not too big, but it’s close to big cities; people will take the time to talk to you and the children still say, ‘Yes, ma’am,’” she adds. With all those positives, Danville became their new hometown in 2005; Shorty’s opened on Westover Drive that same year and moved to its current location in Coleman Marketplace in 2009.

On a typical day, Todd will unlock the store and start preparing the yeast products that will be sold that day—rolls, breads, and Danish.

Sandra arrives an hour later and creates the non-yeast goodies— cookies, cupcakes, wedding and special occasion cakes, muffins, scones and pimento cheese. Inbetween mixing, measuring, baking, and cleaning up, she also homeschools Abraham who is a 5th-6th grader. “We work long 10-12 hour days. We’ve learned how to pull

together as a family. The rough times make us strong,” she says looking across the kitchen and smiling at Todd. He responds with a compliment, “She could walk into any bakery and do a good job.”

Is Training Women Different than Men?

Awhile back I was told by a long-time client that she wanted to do more ab workouts to see more abdominal definition. She is looking great and has been kicking-butt with her workouts, but we are trying to lean-out the last little bit of tummy.

People really think that doing a hundred ab routines more often will get them 6-pack abs; it will not. If we do not expose the abs by losing the fat covering them, we ain’t gonna see nuthin. She then followed this ab recommendation with the comment that “women and men have to be trained differently and it’s easier for men to lose body fat around the tummy than women”. Not true.

I am not picking on this client; I really have enjoyed working with her and she brings high energy and persistence to each and every workout. She is not lazy. I am just referring to these few comments and using them as examples because it’s part of my work each week helping people get in better shape. We all have trouble areas where we store body fat more than other areas. For some of us it’s the chest, for others the tummy or the arms, the hips and buns. We all have trouble areas but we need to work out the total body each week with resistance training (3x per week), cardiovascular training (3x per week), stretching, eating healthy, and getting plenty of rest. Can we put a little more emphasis on one trouble area? Sure, but you have to train the body as a whole because each part plays off of the other. You cannot effectively work the chest muscles if your shoulders are weak; you cannot effectively work the abs if your low-back is weak, and you cannot effectively walk, bike, or jog if your legs are weak.

As far as the women training differently that men idea-- a dumbbell curl works the biceps of a man the same as a woman; a pushup will firm the upper body the same for a man and woman; a squat will work the low body the same for a man or woman. Hormonally, yes, we are different and maybe our diets should be adjusted accordingly, but when it comes to exercise we really are similar. Come to think of it, I don’t think the military trains the women and men differently. I will have to look into this idea and let you know in another article.

Making Memories on Family Vacations

Our family has been enjoying summer vacations on the North Carolina coast since our nowgrown children were babies. Over the years we developed a routine of spending one day in Beaufort, North Carolina. Our favorite pastime was sitting on the dock watching the boats. It’s such a peaceful place, but there’s plenty to interest the entire family.

The Beaufort Mariner’s Museum recently opened a new exhibit featuring Queen Anne’s Revenge— pirate Black Beard’s ship that came to its final resting place at the bottom of the ocean just off the Beaufort coast. Pirate lore is a big part of the mystique of Beaufort. Guides on an old English double-decker bus give daily tours of the beautiful old homes, gardens, churches and cemeteries. Their tours end at a small restored village area that gives visitors an idea of life in the small seaside village during the 1700s. Also, there is boat building at the Watercraft Center and wild horses graze on Shackleford Banks and Carrot Island. In addition, water taxis travel back and forth to Cape Lookout Light House.

Of course, there’s wonderful food. Each little restaurant has its own specialty—oysters from Sharpies, crab cakes from Still Water, shrimp salad from Spouters, lemon meringue pie from Clawsons, Tuna Napoleon from Beaufort Grocery, Caesar Salad and a variety of small plates from Aqua, just to name a few. I couldn’t resist trying to recreate some of our family favorites. Grouper is a fish we often order and this is how I like to dish it up at home. Hope you enjoy.

PECAN ENCRUSTED GROUPER with Browned Butter Tomato Sauce

4 grouper filets 6 oz. each and 1 1/2 inches thick (You can use another mild fish, even tilapia, but you will have to adjust the cooking time according to the thickness.) coarse salt and freshly ground pepper olive oil 6 T butter, divided 1⁄2 cup small pecan pieces (I pulse pecan halves in a food processor several times.)

12 grape tomatoes, halved 2 tsp. Grey Poupon Mustard

Preheat oven to 400°. Gently dry fish with a paper towel.

Lightly coat each piece with a small amount of olive oil. Salt and pepper both sides of fish. Heat one tablespoon of olive oil and two tablespoons of butter in an oven-proof skillet over medium heat.

Pour pecan pieces into a shallow dish. Press fish into the pecans coating each piece. Place coated fish pieces into heated pan and cook for 4-5 minutes until underside is browning. Turn fish and place pan in preheated oven for 10-15 minutes until fish easily flakes with a fork.

Meanwhile, add remaining butter to small pan over mediumhigh heat. Add tomatoes stirring occasionally. Cook until butter begins to foam. Remove from heat when it begins to brown and stir in the mustard. Set sauce aside.

Serve fish over rice with sautéed spinach. Top with browned butter and tomato sauce.

The free open-tothe-public reception for Danville Museum of Fine Arts & History newest exhibit, Certain Home Truths, will be held from 5:30 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. at 975 Main Street. The seemingly childlike prints by Maryland artist, Mia Halton, will be used as a basis for summer art camps and workshops. Her lively and engaging mixed media compositions come from the stuff of everyday life – the people You Talk Too Much and objects around us. They are in the tradition

Art critic, Ann Landi, says, “In most of Halton’s work there is an undercurrent of both violence and humor. Her characters crowd one another or become lost in a labyrinth of detail, but they also seem strangely happy in their entangled fates: they smile, wave at the viewer, talk to each other, or try to step out of the picture plane altogether.

There is a central paradox at work here that gets to certain home truths: we need each other, we need the often untidy morass of day-to-day life, but the familiar comforts that cushion our lives can also be sources of anxiety and confusion.” Certain Home Truths remains on exhibit until September 2. The reception is free. There is a small admission fee at other times. Museum hours are Tuesday through Friday 10 a.m. to 5 p.m, Saturdays and Sundays 2 p.m. – 5 p.m.; closed on Mondays.

From Morning to Night: Domestic Service in the Gilded Age South

This 14-panel exhibition presents a distinctly southern perspective on domestic service at the turn of the 20th century. It tells the story of a predominantly African-American labor corps—barely a generation removed from slavery—that worked primarily in white households as cooks, maids, laundresses, nursemaids, butlers, and chauffeurs. Often hidden from view, and largely hidden from history, their labor made their employers’ lifestyles appear effortless. With nearly 70 photographs and illustrations, interpretive text, and numerous period quotations, the exhibition reveals the daily rhythms of service as well as its broader context in the turbulent Jim Crow South. The exhibition’s focus on everyday interactions between black and white southerners gives visitors an intimate view of this pivotal period in American history. For black southerners, the late 19th and early 20th centuries were anything but gilded. Slavery had ended, but subordination continued through social custom and increasing violence. A series of Jim Crow laws blocked the black vote and enforced strict racial segregation. African Americans, with limited education and employment opportunity, were compelled to take low-paying jobs in agriculture, some industries, and domestic service. African American women, who were excluded from most other occupations, dominated domestic service in the South, comprising 90% of the work force. (submitted by Lynne Bjarnesen)

Danville Harvest Jubilee, a nonprofit organization of volunteers, has lined up great entertainment for the entire weekend starting on Friday night. The festivities continue with a celebration put together by the City of Danville on Monday, July 4th.

“I encourage everyone to take advantage of the opportunity to enjoy the entertainment in Danville as opposed to traveling to other venues and paying high prices,” says Danny Moon, DHJ President.

Danville Diagnostic Imaging Center: High-Tech Care Close to Home New diagnostic tools create a better overall experience Since 1991, Danville Diagnostic Imaging Center (DDIC) has been providing highquality services to the community. Now, those services have been enhanced with a $2 million upgrade of new equipment.

“We are excited to bring new technology to the community and offer a more comfortable experience to our patients,” said DDIC Director Debra Parrish. “It was a serious investment of diagnostic tools, and we are thankful to Danville Regional for investing in this new equipment. We believe this is an investment in the health of our community.”

The technologically advanced equipment includes an enhanced Computed Tomography (CT) scanner and new wide-bore MRI unit.

The new 16-slice CT scanner, an upgrade from our previous CT scanner, allows for high quality imaging and high-speed scanning. Since the equipment acquires scans faster, a patient’s examination time is reduced. The new CT scanner provides exceptionally clear views of scanned anatomy and reveals more details than normal x-ray exams.

The new wide-bore MRI unit will also provide faster and more efficient images, allowing for a quick, accurate diagnosis. Without using x-rays, the MRI machine uses a large magnet, radio waves and a computer to produce imaging of all portions of the anatomy.

With this new technology, an MRI scan averages between 15 and 30 minutes for most procedures. Other advantages of the unit include a much larger bore (opening) so claustrophobia typically is not an issue as well as accommodation of patients weighing up to 500 pounds. A patient can listen to their iPod, favorite CD or satellite radio station choice while their scan is performed.

Feedback on both the new CT and MRI units has been extremely positive both from the physicians who diagnose the scans as well as the patients who have utilized the services. DDIC Medical Director Dr. Michael Spencer said, “I was able to read the first MRI images recently on the new MRI unit and they are phenomenal. I have seen images from many MRIs during my career, and these images are the best I have ever seen. The MRI of the shoulder I viewed was very easy to read, and I was able to follow each of the appropriate structures to make a definitive diagnosis. This is very exciting for DDIC.” Reaction from patients who visited DDIC has also been positive. “This was my first experience having an MRI, and I was very impressed with the center and equipment,” said one patient. “I had an MRI of my kidneys – being very concerned because my father died of kidney cancer. I was anxious because I don’t like to be in closed-in spaces, but this unit did not bother me in the least. There was cool air blowing on my face, and the scan only took about twenty minutes.”

In addition to the new CT scanner and wide bore MRI unit, Rebecca Taylor, DDIC MRI/CT Supervisor also revealed that DDIC received new service line applications, including vascular imaging. Vascular imaging examines arteries and veins for blockages that can cause strokes as well as tissue damage due to reduced blood flow. Also later this summer, DDIC will be the only location within the service area to offer breast MRI services. Offering breast MRI services will benefit breast cancer patients as well as patients with abnormal mammograms.

In order to provide high quality service to patients, a health center must have the necessary equipment, but also be nationally accredited. DDIC is no different. The CT and MRI services are accredited by the American College of Radiology (ACR).

The ACR awards accreditation to facilities for the achievement of high practice standards after a peer-review evaluation of its practice. Two months ago, the ACR also awarded DDIC re-accreditation of its digital mammography services.

In addition to CT, MRI and digital mammography services, DDIC’s non-invasive vascular testing of the carotid arteries, venous system and extremities is accredited by the Intersocietial Commission for the Accreditation of Vascular Laboratories.

“We are proud of the fact that our recent digital mammography inspection revealed no deficiencies and our associates are recognized for providing the highest quality care of breast cancer testing in the area,” said Parrish. “We appreciate all that our accrediting organizations and colleges do for our medical field, and we will continue to follow every guideline and standard to the fullest and bring valuable care to our patients.”

Meeting all guidelines and being awarded national accreditations is important.
