1950 - 2013 NORTH THOMPSON FALL FAIR AND RODEO CELEBRATES 64 YEARS
THEN AND NOW - LOOK HOW FAR WE’VE COME! THEN: Back in 1950, what had been a dream for local farm and ranch families became a reality. The Native Sons of Canada lent their Louis Creek grounds and hall for the first fall fair which was held on Labour Day. The fall fair entry catalogue had just 12 pages, and promised: "To make your Labour Day a real holiday, a full round of entertainment during the day and evening is assured". An estimated 500 people attended that first fair. Len Johnson, the first fair manager, made the following statement 64 years ago, "For a fair to be a success, it must first be centered in a farming district, and secondly, it must have the support of the people of the community." Len's words have rung true. Fueled by outstanding volunteerism since its inception, the North Thompson Fall Fair and Rodeo (NTFFR) has steadily evolved and expanded. The location has changed, and so have many of the faces, although many remain, and familiar family names continue to support the NTFFR. After 64 years the focus is the same as it was back in 1950: "A celebration of agriculture, livestock, western country living and community spirit". TODAY the North Thompson Fall Fair and Rodeo is in its 64th year, and is one of the leading regional events within the Thompson Nicola Regional District.

The mission statement of the organization is: To encourage, develop and promote the advancement of agriculture and farm living in the North Thompson Valley, with special reference to the fostering of livestock, crops, orchard crops, poultry husbandries, industrial, commercial, educational, mechanical and household arts, and rural and urban young peoples organizations, 4H competitions, livestock competitions, fine arts, sewing and baking, gardening, bee keeping, and volunteerism at its finest. The NTFFRA functions with a volunteer Board of Directors along with an additional 75-100 dedicated community volunteers. Facility enhancements and upgrades are in almost all instances completed by volunteers. Major upgrades such as electrical, welding, carpentry, etc., are often provided by local contractors at cost, and with much done as in-kind donations. The annual budget for the Fall Fair and Rodeo is in excess of $250,000, and to this date the NTFFRA remains debt free. Over the past five years 10,000 - 11,000 visitors have converged on the small community of Barriere during the week of the Fall Fair and Rodeo, bringing with them an estimated economic impact of $525,000. Eighty-five percent of the visitors are from the Kamloops and Lower Mainland areas. More than 85 percent of the expenditures are purchased from local businesses. Notably, in March of 2011 the NTFFRA embraced a vision of constructing the North Thompson Agriplex; a multi-use agricultural facility to serve the region and beyond. In less than six months, thanks to volunteers, businesses, contractors, supporters and sponsors the building was erected and able to host the 62nd Fall Fair and Rodeo. Most importantly, the community buy-in to the project was phenomenal; over $730,00 raised (including $188,000 in-kind donations) to complete phase one of the project. In 2012, phase two of the project has been funded by the BC Community Recreation Program. The fall fair facility holds on average over 100 events annually; serving local, regional, and provincial needs. The public demonstrates a willingness to participate in activities at the facility, not just seasonally, but throughout the year; and with the addition of the North Thompson Agriplex the number of events has already started to rise significantly. The NTFFRA recognizes, that with continued positive growth and expansion within the facility, that the direct economic growth to the community of Barriere and the surrounding area remains immediate and significant. The dream that was started 64 years ago lives on today, because of unending community spirit and the hardworking dedicated volunteers who continue to make it all happen. The legacy lives on! The dream lives on because a group of volunteers and participants work hard together each year to keep it so.

Message from the President "I believe in the future of agriculture, with a faith born not of words, but of deeds - in achievements won by the present and past generations of agriculturists; in the promise of better days through better ways, even as the better things we now enjoy have come to us from the struggles of former years." Impressive words written by E.M. Tiffany for the opening paragraph of the FFA Creed, and adopted by the National FFA Convention in 1930. Words that ring especially true in today's world as people are once again embracing the importance of agriculture, food safety, and food sustainability. In this modern and technological era, it is easy to blissfully go on our merry way, finding all we need to clothe and feed our families at stores, shops, and department chain giants. But unless you live on a farm, how many of us really know where all of those items we wear, utilize, or put on the table actually come from? How are they made, how are they grown? Part of the mission statement for the North Thompson Fall Fair and Rodeo Association is, "To encourage, develop and promote the advancement of agriculture...". In a nutshell that means our annual Fall Fair is about education – teaching the visiting public the value of agriculture; providing a venue where visitors can meet the families who grow the food, raise the stock, and help us to raise healthy and happy children. To achieve this goal we annually put together a unique class on agriculture that fills three whole days with first class fun for the whole family – from the smallest to the oldest. In fact, you'll be having such a great time enjoying entertainment, music, magic, laughter and thrills, that the learning part will just sneak up on you – and the great memories will last a lifetime! We're very proud of our old time country fair, and we are especially proud of our membership, volunteers, exhibitors, and performers who bring what agriculture is really about to our fairgoers. Most importantly though we need to say a big thank you to the people who still work the earth, raise the stock, and feed the world. Without you, we'd all be lost. Come on down to our fair, and join us in celebrating 100 years of 4H in Canada!

RULES FOR EXHIBITORS The North Thompson Fall Fair is not in business for profit. The sole purpose of the Association is to encourage the betterment of livestock, field and garden crops, arts, crafts and hobbies, etc. The Committees do all the work freely and without personal gain. They will therefore appreciate your assistance in making the Fair better known and better attended.
7. All hall exhibits must be in place by 8:45 am, Saturday, Aug. 31, 2013. The exhibit hall will be closed for judging at 9:00 am Saturday, Aug. 31, 2012. There will be no public admission during judging and Officials only will be permitted in the hall.
1. Membership to the Association is five ($5) dollars per year. This entitles the member to voting rights at all meetings. You are urged to join and support this organization.
All livestock must be on the grounds by 10:00 am, Saturday, Aug. 31, 2013 for weighing. All exhibits including Livestock must be left on display until 4:30 pm Monday, Sept. 2, 2013. All exhibits including Livestock must be claimed or removed by 6:00 pm Monday, Sept. 2, 2013.
2. Entry fees for exhibits are at the top of each section. All entry fees are used as prize money.
8. All articles in all Sections except the Livestock Divisions may not be exhibited a second time.
3. Adult & Student exhibitors must have an exhibitor’s ticket of $8 or a current North Thompson Fall Fair & Rodeo Association membership. Exhibitors age 10 and under do not require an exhibitors ticket. 4-H members entering 4-H classes are not required to have an exhibitor’s ticket but 4-H members entering open classes must have an exhibitor’s ticket. Any exhibitor with six (6) head of livestock or more is allowed one more pass ($8) for an additional helper.
9. No exhibit may compete for more than one prize.
4. Livestock entries close on Aug. 17, 2013. Hay entries close on Aug. 7, 2013 for sampled Hay classes 1, 2, 3, 4, 5. Group Entries SECTION M close Friday, Aug. 23, 2013. 5. All other entry forms must be properly made out and in the hands of the Registration Secretary, Box 873, Barriere, BC VOE 1EO by Friday, Aug. 23, 2013 - except for flowers only, which will be accepted until 8:30 am, Saturday, Aug. 31, 2013. All entries require an entry form. There will also be a drop box at the Fall Fair Hall. The exhibitor’s fees must accompany all entry forms. Any exhibit not accompanied by Entry Forms and Entry Fees will not be accepted. The Association is not responsible for placing exhibits. LATE ENTRIES WILL BE REQUIRED TO PAY A $5.00 LATE REGISTRATION FEE. 6. The Exhibit Hall will be open for the placing of exhibits as follows: Thurs. Aug. 29 10 am - 8 pm Fri. Aug. 30 9 am - 8 pm Sat. 10. If there is only one entry in any Class, Second prize will be given unless in the estimation of the Judge the quality of the entry is worthy of a First prize. 11. Only one entry may be placed by an exhibitor in each Class, except in the Livestock Divisions where a maximum of two entries maybemade;Wine,PhotographyandFlowers,whereanunlimited number of entries may be made; and Fine Arts where two entries per class may be made. 12. All those handling livestock or riding in horse events do so at their own risk. Stallions are to be handled by persons 18 years of age and over. 13. Exhibitors criticizing or interfering with the judge while in the ring or on the grounds will be automatically disqualified. 14. The sale of raffle tickets on the grounds during the fair is prohibited except for tickets sold by the North Thompson Fall Fair & Rodeo Association. 15. Prize money may be claimed at the Treasurer's office, on Sunday and Monday, during the Fair once the convenor has handed in the information. Unclaimed prizes totaling $10 or more will be mailed out. Unclaimed prizes totaling less than $10 will be considered a donation to the Fair. 16. Exhibits are shown at the owner’s risk and the Fair will not be responsible for any loss or damage. Exhibitors requiring fire or other insurance must give the matter their personal attention.

Seams - Pressed 3. Seam Allowance- trimmed, clipped & finished 4. Hems - even 5. Inside - look as good as the outside 6. Linings - right amount of ease and as accurate as the outer garments.
What Judges Look For In A Prize Winning Quilt
• Overall appearance: Both front and back, judges look at both sides • Effective use of colour: Is there visual appeal? Is there original use of colour and design? • Appropriate use of prints: Have a mix of large, medium, small prints, be careful not to overpower some prints with others. • Bindings: Nice, even stitches should be dispersed across the quilt. Make sure there is sufficient quilting over the entire surface of the quilt, and that it is balanced. Don’t leave large unfilled areas. • Machine Quilting: Don’t overdo it. Too much detailed machine quilting obscures the pieced design and can cause quilts to “belly” or “waffle”. Bury the ends of the threads in the quilt. • Cleanliness: No smudges, no pencil lines, no dog or cat hair, and ideally unwashed & unused. • Construction: How well is it put together, are seams straight, do points come together? No floating seams, no pitches in seams, all pieced blocks should lay flat, make sure corners are 90 degrees, etc.

Officials at the fair will enforce the rule by checking any lamb in question for the ability to grasp and lift the tail. Championship classes will be held immediately after each class is completed whenever possible. Stall competition for 4-H will be judged from 9 am Saturday until 5 pm Sunday. Trophy & prize donated by Country Feeds, Barriere. Games are scheduled for Monday. Children under 6 years of age must be accompanied in the ring by someone 9 years of age or older. Entry packages must be received WITH fees by Aug 26, 2013. No email/call in entries. Post entries may be made up until 30 minutes before the scheduled show start time, but will be charged a $40 post entry fee. Entry packages missing information or fees that are not corrected before the entry closing date will be charged the post entry fee. Exhibitors cancelling their entries after the entry closing date shall forfeit their entry fees – unless producing a doctor or veterinarian release due to injury or illness. Proof of BC Horse Council Membership is required for all competitors as this is a BC Horse Council Recognized event. Copy of HCBC membership card & proof of age must be attached to entry form.

STABLING
As a “BC Heritage Qualifier Event” this show enables competitors to earn qualification points toward the 2014 BC Heritage Finals. Competitors must place 1st to 6th in a minimum of 2 BC Heritage Qualifier Events in each class they wish to enter at the BC Heritage Finals. A Log Book must be purchased from BC Horse Council (and may also be done at the Light Horse Show Office). All Log Book holders MUST hand their Log Books into the Show Secretary BEFORE the show begins, & may pick them up at the end of the day/weekend. Only Junior, Intermediate & Seniors are eligible to qualify for the BC Heritage Finals. Novice, Green & Small Fry events are not offered at the Finals so therefore no qualification will come from those classes entered at this show. Entrants must ensure that they have selected the correct classes on their entry form, failure to do so is NOT the responsibility of the show management. The BC Heritage Finals is also the Selection for Team BC for the Canadian Equestrian Championships in Dressage, Reining & Jumping. A limited amount of stabling is available. Outdoor uncovered pens $5/day, covered stalls $15/day. Covered stalls are limited, if one is requested but is unavailable, the difference will be refunded and you will be placed in an outdoor pen. One horse only per stall. NO STALLION STABLING AVAILABLE. Stabling must be reserved by calling or emailing Stabling Manager. Fees must be paid on entry form. Refundable deposit of $25 must be received with Entry Form and Fees - Separate Cheque or Money Order if that is your payment type. Check in time will be scheduled when you reserved your stall. Pens/stalls will be inspected and if left clean and free of damage, the pen deposit will be returned. If you do not book your pen in advance, or fail to send in stall deposit, there will NOT be one available. Stabling is available on a first come, first serve basis. Personal panels are not permitted; overnight tying to trailers is not permitted.
CAMPING
$30 per unit - this is a single fee regardless of number of nights you camp. Camping is first come, first served, no reserved camping available. You will need to be prepared to take your tack to your horse's stall or pen as some camping areas you will not be able to take your horse to your trailer. Toilets & hot water showers (pay per use) are available on the grounds.

• All riders under 18 are required to wear an ASTM/ SEI approved helmet at all times while mounted on the Fair Grounds. • All riders are required to wear proper riding footwear. • Attire as outlined in the HCBC Rule Book is required for both the horse show & gymkhana; long sleeve shirts with collar and cuff. Western hat or helmet for 18+, helmets for 18 and under. • Stallions are only to be handled by riders/handlers 19 & over. Stallions will not be accepted as mounts for lead line riders. • Abuse of horses on the grounds will not be tolerated & will lead to disqualification & forfeiture of entry fees at the discretion of the judge/show committee. • Judge/show committee has the right to excuse any horse displaying signs of unsoundness from competition. Entry fees will not be refunded. • Any exhibitor (or their parent/coach) attempting to interfere with judge/judging will be excluded from competition. • Show committee reserves the right to cancel/combine/divide classes as entries indicate. • Judge’s decision is final. In 1913, Milton and Agnes Blackwell moved with their young family from the Fraser Valley to Barnhartvale and started dairy farming on a beautiful property overlooking the South Thompson River. Blackwell Dairy soon sold their products at the farmer’s market in Kamloops. In 1983 the family followed their dream to build a milk processing plant and Blackwell Dairy Farm Inc. was established. The business presently offers a full line of dairy product, including table cream, whipping cream, buttermilk and of course their old fashioned chocolate milk. They have recently introduced 18% table cream in both one litre and 500ml containers. Blackwell has expanded its area of distribution and currently supplies their locally manufactured dairy products throughout the B.C. interior . • FOR WESTERN SHOW CLASSES: A horse shall be considered to be one year of age on the first of January following the actual date of foaling. Junior Horses are five years of age or younger as of January 1 of the calendar year. Junior horses may compete in a regulation snaffle bit or bosaltype hackamore; Junior horses may compete with a western curb bit using one hand only. Senior horses are six years of age or older as of January 1 of the calendar year. Senior horses must compete in Western style bridle & western curb bit. • No whips/crops, martingales, tie-downs in Western Show Classes. • There will be NO GATE HOLDS, report to the whipper-in before the previous class ends. If you miss your class you forfeit your fee. • All horses & competitors exhibiting at this horse show & gymkhana do so at their own risk.
