A Note from the Creative director of short+sweet

It’s a great pleasure to welcome you to the 12th season of Short+Sweet Theatre in Sydney. The three month program features the enthusiastic participation of around 800 writers, directors and actors and is a testament to the deep pool of talent that Sydney has to offer. As always each season has its share of unique occurrences. For me 2013 will be particularly memorable because five plays from the brand new Regional NSW Short+Sweet program in Dubbo and Broken Hill have been included in the mix. Next year the program will be expanded to include other regional locations underpinned by an extensive workshop and mentoring program.

Additionally there are productions in the program that come from all around the nation and from as far away as Chennai. This Indian offering will throw up a unique and noteworthy challenge to local groups since it has already won Best Production in Short+Sweet Festivals in Chennai, Mumbai and Kuala Lumpur. From a behind the scenes perspective we’ve greatly benefitted over the last year from the guidance and support of Justin Macdonnell and Les Currie who have put into place structures and systems that will carry the organisation onto bigger and better things over the coming years. This is also the first year that a dedicated Producer has been included as part of the production team. Both Producer, Lisa Rathbone, and Festival Director, Pete Malicki, have worked tirelessly to put together the massive program. The results of their work, as is always the case with Short+Sweet, can be seen on the stage. I hope you enjoy the show. Mark Cleary Founder and Creative Director Short+Sweet

estival f e h t m o r f age s mes t e e w s + t r o h s f o director Welcome friends and newcomers to Short+Sweet Sydney 2013, the world’s largest festival of 10 minute plays. It’s my absolute pleasure to be returning as Festival Director for the second year and I’m looking forward to producing another season of fantastic, innovative plays which have never before been staged in our city. This is festival number 12 for us. From humble beginnings in January 2002, we’ve gone on to produce well over 2000 plays written by Australian and international playwrights, utilising the talents of around 1600 directors and thousands of actors. In fact, if you add up all the people who’ve been involved with Short+Sweet Sydney over the years, the number is in the realms of a whopping 10,000! Since our last festival ended at the end of March 2012, I haven’t been able to go out to a theatre show without bumping into someone who was involved as an artist. Our actors are on stage, our directors are in the front rows, our stage crew are at the sound and lighting desks and our writers are getting their works produced. The last show I went to at the time of writing was a full length play at Riverside Theatres in Parramatta where the entire cast had been involved in Short+Sweet, our development program, Crash Test Drama, the writer and director had worked in our Gala Finals and the Stage Manager was one of our 2012 crew.

This is the reason I’m so passionate about the festival. It creates opportunities. Artists are exposed to a huge number of producers, agents, venue managers and arts administrators, audience members and, arguably of greatest importance, fellow artists. At least once a week I get an email from someone who’s chasing down an actor they saw in our last season, keen to offer them a role or an audition. I can’t tell you how much of a privilege it is to be in a position where I can facilitate these connections and help a fellow artist get a new gig. We did a few things differently last year. We introduced a new voting system for the People’s Choice where audience members could choose their favourite two plays instead of just one. We also launched our People’s Choice Showcase – the ten most popular plays of our festival together on one night. Both of these initiatives are returning. However, we’ve listened to feedback and we’re scaling the size of our season down from 180 to 160 plays this year to ensure the standard of what we put on stage is of the highest order. Let me finish by thanking some of the key people involved in putting the festival together: Founder of Short+Sweet Mark Cleary, Lighting Designer returning for another year, Taylor Allen, Production Manager/Head Stage Manager Shane Addison, who has approached the job

with calmness, thoroughness and a great attitude. The Artists’ Committee, who have already proved themselves invaluable, our interns, venue staff, Masterclass hosts and professional partners and Geoff Sirmai, our wonderful publicist. Final thanks goes to Lisa Rathbone, our Producer, who has jumped on board at the last minute and already proven herself to be dynamic, hard-working, intelligent and seriously competent. However, the most important people are the hundreds of actors, directors and writers who pool their talents to make Short+Sweet happen. It’s their work we’re putting on stage and without these 750+ people there would be no festival. I’m looking forward to working with each and every one of them to make their show a success. See you around at King Street Theatre, Sidetrack and Seymour Centre! Pete Malicki Festival Director Short+Sweet Sydney 2013

The lord mayor of sydney “I’m very happy to support Short+Sweet 2013. Since 2002, the annual Short+Sweet Festival has given new and established writers the opportunity to achieve recognition and share their work with appreciative audiences across Australia. Short+Sweet is a great forum for new work, experimentation and innovation, while working within 10 minutes of performance time. The City of Sydney has a good relationship with Short+Sweet and recognises its significant contribution to Sydney continuing to be a creative and vibrant city. I’m confident that this year’s Short+Sweet will once again be a tremendous success, delighting and inspiring audiences. I hope everyone involved in Short+Sweet has a wonderful experience and wish them the very best with this year’s festival.” Yours sincerely Clover Moore MP Lord Mayor of Sydney

Message from s The Minister As Minister for the Arts I would like to acknowledge the great work by everyone at the Short+Sweet Festival and their continued commitment to showcase new and original 10 minute plays. Short+Sweet is now firmly entrenched on the Australian arts calendar. For more than a decade this festival has brought together the best of emerging and established Australian and international playwrights and performers all backed by skilled technical crews. The result is a fresh and innovative approach for an unpredictable theatre experience. In 2013, Short+Sweet Sydney will produce an incredible 160 brand new 10 minute plays by more than 300 writers and directors with close to 500 actors. I want to congratulate everyone at Short+Sweet for their work promoting their ‘10 minute plays’ idea overseas. At its core, reaching out to other nations is about engaging in cultural diplomacy and building stronger people-to-people ties through sharing culture. The Australian Government fully supports this approach through its Asian Century White Paper. I wish you all the best for the 2013 season and beyond. The Hon Simon Crean MP Minister for Regional Australia, Regional Development and Local Government. Minister for the Arts

The aRTISTS’ COMMITTEE across the State who wishes to be active in or just enjoy the arts. For this reason I was especially delighted last year to confirm the NSW Government’s four year commitment to Short+Sweet to bring those two ideals together across regional NSW.

It is with great pleasure that I welcome the 12th season of the annual Short+Sweet Sydney Theatre Festival. Few festivals anywhere are a match for this three month marathon. It is all the more remarkable that those months are filled with brand new plays of just 10 minute duration made by 170 playwrights,165 directors and more than 450 actors. Almost 800 theatre makers volunteer their talent, time and energy to make summer in Sydney a great place to be and NSW an ever more liveable and creative State. I congratulate them all. Short+Sweet is dedicated to creating the opportunity, for as many people as possible, to experience first-hand the craft of live theatre. The NSW Government is committed to providing access to everyone

Already Short+Sweet Festivals have been introduced to Dubbo and Broken Hill. You will have the opportunity to see five of the best of their plays in Sydney this year. By 2014 there will be Short+ Sweet theatre workshops and festivals for adults and young people in at least 12 regional centres. This program is bringing the country to the city and the city to the country – which is how it ought to be. I wish Short+Sweet a happy 12th anniversary and great success in 2013. Hon. George Souris MP Minister for the Arts

Rosemary Ghazi Masterclass Coordinator Relatively new to the industry, Rosemary started acting in 2011 and has not looked back since. She loves the screen but her heart is with the stage. Rosemary studied at Sydney Theatre School in 2011, graduating with a diploma in Theatre Performance. She performed in three productions for the school, including the controversial contemporary classic ‘Attempts On Her Life’ as well as the restoration comedy ‘The Beau Defeated’. She has performed in a number of plays for Short+Sweet as well as Crash Test Drama, even winning the audience vote at the CTD 2012 Season One Finals. She is currently studying at Screenwise Film and TV School and busy co-writing and co-producing her first feature film. Deborah Mulhall Judges Coordinator Falling in love with theatre at the age of 16, Deborah has spent a life in pursuit of having this love requited. What started out as acting became directing then writing and looking back and further study and teaching and more learning and travel. There have been many productions; many hundreds of performances; quite a few full-length plays;

some short plays; offBroadway; in Italian; in Thai; keynote speeches; agent managed; toured; co-op’ed and film-optioned…and the excitement of this particular love-affair continues to resonate. Easy to find at www.deborahmulhall.com or thewrighter@yahoo.com Gabriel McCarthy Online Content Coordinator Gabriel McCarthy recently graduated from the Actor’s College of Theatre and Television (ACTT), with an Advanced Diploma in Stage and Screen Acting. He started up Gabatwa Studios (2007) where he writes and directs his own theatre and films. Gabriel has studied physical, improvisation, absurdist, mime, acrobatic, grotesque, dance, musical, and ensemble theatre, and has been a gymnast for nearly 20 years. Gabriel’s training and methods stem from the National Institute of Dramatic Art (NIDA), Playback Theatre Sydney and many other workshops and theatre companies. His acting credits include: Dark of the Moon (ACTT), Something to be Done (Short+Sweet Sydney 2012: Best Actor and Best Production), Rowan Atkinson Tribute Show (KxH), His Room (Parramatta Riverside Theatre).

She trained at Johnny Young Talent School, where she was accepted into the advanced performance troupes. She studied drama both at HSC level as well as at Edith Cowan University, and earned her Bachelor of Arts (Drama/Writing) in 2005. Sierra has been involved with Short+Sweet as an actor for several years and has won the Best Actress award in the Central Coast Short+Sweet festival in 2007. She has appeared in a number of short films as well as theatre productions. Sophia Scarpellino Audition/Event Coordinator Sophia performed at last year’s Short+Sweet in the Top 100 and is excited to be back this year as our Audition and Event Coordinator. She has a passion for the theatre behind the scenes and in performance. Lyndall Johnston Short+Sweet Best New Talent 2012 Short+Sweet is a fantastic opportunity for developing, emerging and established artists to practise their art and display their talents by being given a platform to produce and display their work in a safe and supportive environment. The emphasis on creative collaboration is paramount to success within the theatre industry and Short+Sweet provides an arena in which writers, actors, producers, directors, designers and composers work together to produce and display the high levels of talent and artistry that often go unnoticed in such a tough and competitive industry. I had the privilege of directing two wonderfully written plays in 2012; the casting process supplied by Short+Sweet was excellent and enabled me to secure outstanding actors who worked hard in delivering great performances. During the 2012 festival I met many people within the industry including writers, directors and actors with whom I established

great friendships and the prospect of further work. The festival management of all aspects of Short+Sweet is brilliant and promotes a high level of professionalism to the collaboration of live theatre performance. I learned many valuable lessons in the art of theatrical production and collaboration courtesy of the high standards of the Short+Sweet Festival. Receiving Best New Talent in Sydney 2012 has provided an excellent opportunity for me to further my skills and development in working in all aspects of theatre including direction, writing, acting and performing. I have since been employed by the University of Newcastle on the Central Coast as a Student Ambassador for the Bachelor of Arts degree, where I am majoring in Creative and Performing Arts and have several works in progress with independent theatre and performance companies. As a dancer and vocalist my passion lives within theatrical performance and production and I’m looking forward to challenging myself with further work in the theatre industry. I highly recommend all artists wanting experience and a platform to showcase their talents to get involved with Short+Sweet, work hard and professionally, have fun and ultimately create entertaining new theatre while forming great friendships and working relationships. Enjoy!

Gabe McCarthy Best Actor Short+Sweet was by far the most rewarding, entertaining and joyful experience from any theatre production I’ve ever been involved with. It simply came down to the people: the crew and fellow actors. Those working backstage were incredibly professional and unbelievably pleasant to work with. They made me feel right at home whilst showing complete dominance over every show by being continuously on the ball and switched on. A perfect example involves an incident concerning my own show, when a prop banana flew out of my hand, went a little too far into the atmosphere and latched itself to a stage light above. Nonetheless, the stage manager and crew waited till my play was complete, then promptly brought a ladder onto the stage and removed the banana without missing a beat. I say ‘bravo’ to the Short+Sweet crew and a massive thank you to all the fellow actors I met with over the weeks. Since then I have already had many offers from

other companies to continue my physical tour-de-force. But what really resides in me is to begin writing up some new scripts, so I may indulge into Short+Sweet again. Taylor Klas (Best Actress & Best Script), as well as the fellas from The Whiskey Bar (Matriark Art Theatre) and I already have ideas to collaborate together. Short+Sweet opened amazing pathways into the Australian Theatre industry for me. I’d do it all again in a heartbeat!

Taylor Klas Best Actress I had an idea for a cabaret character that I had been working on when the opportunity arose to perform it at Short+Sweet Sydney. Coming up from Melbourne to perform was a frightening proposition, but the whole experience was wonderful, with the hardworking Short+Sweet crew as concerned for the artistic integrity of my show as much as I was. One of the best parts about Short+Sweet was having the opportunity to perform without worrying about the

producing side as is usually the case with Independent Theatre. It was a great way to focus on the actual show and I worked on developing and strengthening the piece throughout the season. The response I received from the audiences throughout the festival gave me the confidence to develop the ten minute piece into a fulllength cabaret which I am performing at The Butterfly Club in Melbourne. My success at the festival opened doors for me, as I have been able to work with many high-level artists and have been invited to perform at various events. Throughout the festival, I made great contacts and friends. A few of us have even started collaborating on a new show. The whole experience was fun and I would do it again in a snap!

Matriark Art Theatre Overall People’s Choice Winner Short+Sweet 2012 was Matriark Art Theatre’s second year of involvement in the festival. We set out to write a ten-minute western musical

and what we ended up with was The Whiskey Bar. We pulled together an ensemble of fourteen performers and musicians, wrote our own songs, choreographed some ridiculous dance sequences and generally had a bit of fun. We were fortunate enough to have the chance to present our work three times throughout the festival: in the heats, the People’s Choice Showcase and the Gala Finals at the Seymour Centre. Our success in the festival was a real encouragement to us when it came to creating our own work and since our experience we’ve continued developing ambitious genre mash-ups. In September 2012, we produced our first fulllength production, Alarum, which was performed at the PACT centre for emerging artists as part of the Sydney Fringe Festival. Short+Sweet provided us with many great connections and some wonderful supporters and has given us a leg up as we continue to produce our own work. Not to mention the great fun we had being part of the supportive and generous community of artists that seem to congregate around the biggest short play festival in the world.

W NS l a n io g e R T E E SHORT+SW In 2012 Short+Sweet embarked on an exciting new program to create rural hubs of writers, directors and actors creating and performing local plays for local communities. The program has been brought to Regional NSW and Sydney with the generous support of the NSW Government through Arts NSW. Regional Short+Sweet programs were presented in Dubbo and Broken Hill. Activities and outcomes included 10 artistic workshops delivered in Regional NSW; presentation of 16 plays written by local writers were showcased to an audience of around 800 people on 6 nights involving 16 directors and 104 local artists with 2 regional co-ordinators and 18 volunteers involved in delivering the events. A selection of 5 of these works have been included in the Sydney Short+Sweet program and may go on to be presented in other Short+Sweet Festivals in Australia and overseas. The works are of a high standard and represent the talent and diversity of regional arts practice in NSW.

This initiative is what Broken Hill exactly needed, reviving and maintaining a positive program within the arts is so important within our region, and to be able to have a successful festival which focuses on theatre has given our community such a boost. It has been a pleasure to work with new and experienced local writers, actors and directors and to be able to contribute and offer a theatre based program and festival to showcase their talents. Mudgee Dramatic Society presents Extra Special to the party; Dubbo delivers diversity and intensity with 3 plays: Disposable, 2 Count, Emergency Exit Aisle and Broken Hill brings ironic twists and turns with Clean Sweep.

Our Short+Sweet inaugural festival was a huge success on many fronts, not just the new opportunities for aspiring artists. Workshops attracted participants from many diverse backgrounds and challenged the talents of established creative locals. Many came out of their comfort zones and reaped the benefits, building confidence and determination to continue the creative journey. For audiences, there was something new and exciting delivered by locals: it was like they were witnessing the wealth of talent our region has to offer for the very first time!
