Ephrata Mennonite 21st Annual Ag Class Plant Exchange

The Ephrata Mennonite School Backyard Ag class would like to invite the public to the 21st Annual Plant Exchange. This will be the first Plant Exchange at their new location, 635 Stevens Road, Ephrata. The event will be held on Thursday, May 16 at 12:00 noon. At 1:00 p.m.,

the students will present the projects they have been working on covering different houseplants, air plants and cucurbits. The exchanging of plants will begin at 1:30 p.m. (not before). No plants can be exchanged until all announcements are made. Plants accepted

for the exchange include houseplants, fruits, vegetables, herbs, perennials, annuals, trees, shrubs, seeds, bulbs and water plants. No invasive plants, please.

Hope For Haiti Benefit Auction Finds New Home

The 11th annual Hope for Haiti Benefit Auction invites the community to join in on Saturday, May 18, starting at 9:00 a.m. until the last item is sold.

This full-day community event will feature live and silent auctions, a large bake sale, children’s activities and delicious homemade food. Following last year’s success, competitive spikeball tournaments will also return this year.

of Hope for Haiti is the community’s unity in supporting the Hope Library and Christian Training Center in Port-au-Prince, Haiti. The library provides access to uplifting resource materials and offers ethical business training for those looking to become selfsustainable.

As Haiti continues to rebuild after a challenging year of insecurity and turmoil, these needs will be

greater than ever. The Hope Library (Bibliyotèk Lespwa) stands as one of the few public libraries and business training centers accessible to individuals in Port-auPrince, Haiti. Offering ethical, Godly training in various occupations and quality literature in French, Creole, and English, the library serves as a beacon of hope and empowerment for the local community.

Jean E. Hedricks, 91, Ephrata Manor, passed away on Saturday, April 20.

She was the wife of the late Jere Hedricks.

She is survived by two daughters: Deborah R. Ressler, wife of Thomas, and Linda L. Hedricks; two grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

Robert Michael Weitzel, 69, Denver, passed away on Wednesday, April 24. He was the husband of the late Susan E. (Jones) Weitzel.

He is survived by his mother, Martha E. (Capwell) Weitzel; a stepson, Shawn D. McKinney; a stepdaughter, Stephanie L. McKinney; one step-grandchild; 1 stepgreat-grandchild; and a brother, Randy Weitzel. He was preceded in death by a daughter, Alexandra Weitzel.

George P. Althouse, 81, husband of Thea Arlene Means Althouse, Leola, passed away on Friday, April 26.

Besides his wife, he is survived by a daughter, Dana L. Althouse-Yoder, Leola; one grandchild; and three sisters: Caroline Gordon, Florida; Thelma Hess, Intercourse; and Judy, wife of Jim Hulsey, Texas. He was preceded in death by a son, Doug Althouse.

Irvin Lee Martin, 81, husband of Louise M.

(Benner) Martin, Lititz, passed away on Thursday, April 26.

Besides his wife, he is survived by two sons: Michael L., husband of Nikki Martin, Manheim, and Patrick L., husband of Cynthia Martin, East Earl; three grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and a sister, Nancy Martin, Osceola.

Maurice L. “Mouse” Blose Jr., 78, husband of Marychelly-Ann (Hinon) Blose, Lititz, passed away on Saturday, April 27.

Besides his wife, he is survived by three sons: Matthew, husband of Kiersten Blose; Michael, husband of Jeannine Blose; and Nicholas Blose; seven grandchildren; and a sister, Monica, wife of Jerrie Swartz.

Titus S. Zimmerman, 86, husband of Mary Elizabeth (Zimmerman) Zimmerman, Narvon, passed away on Tuesday, April 30.

Besides his wife, he is survived by three sons: John David Zimmerman, East Earl; Carl Eugene, husband of Linda Zimmerman, New Holland; and Calvin, husband of Marian Zimmerman, Chula, Missouri; six daughters: Vera Jane, wife of Lavern Newswanger, Morgantown; Mary Beth, wife of David Horst, Penn Yan, New York; Priscilla, wife of Lamar Shirk, Thorp, Wisconsin; Linda, wife of John Aaron Shirk, Barnett, Missouri; Esther Mae, wife of Ivan Sensenig, Narvon; and Janice, wife of Mervin Hoover, Denver; 68 grandchildren; 53 greatgrandchildren; two brothers:

Jonas F. Kauffman, 101, Lincoln Christian Home, Ephrata, passed away on Wednesday, May 1.

He was the husband of the late Elizabeth F. Beiler.

He is survived by a son, Melvin J., husband of Esther A. Kauffman, Lancaster; two daughters: Sue, wife of Ralph Miller, Daleville, Virginia, and Jane, wife of Nathan Kauffman, Mount Pleasant; 11 grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; and a sister, Mary Lantz, Gap.

He was preceded in death by a son, Elmer.

Memorial Day Event

The Schoeneck Veterans Memorial Association will host its Annual Memorial Day event on Monday, May 27 at the Memorial (Schoeneck Park entrance on West Queen Street). The day will begin with a parade stepping off at 9:00 a.m. Registration is at 8:30 a.m. at the Schoeneck Fire Company parking lot. Prizes will be awarded to all participants. The Heidelberg Band will provide patriotic music.

The Lancaster County Office of Aging, Lititz Senior Center, located at Lititz United Methodist Church, 201 East Market Street, Lititz, is open Monday, Wednesday and Thursday, from 8:30 a.m. until 1:00 p.m., with lunch served at noon. There is no cost to attend.

O’Brien hails from a London-Irish family and he utilizes this special background in his musical performances. The Launies were formed by Jamie in 1997, and since then, he has had multiple multi-talented band mates share the stage with him. The band features established musicians who have mastered instruments such as the fiddle, mandolin, and guitar, as well as engaging vocals will delight the audience with a rare repertoire of songs originating from England and Ireland. 100 Years Ago This Month: Historical Events From May 1924

The month of May has been home to many historical events over the years. Here’s a look at some that helped to shape the world in May 1924.

• Iodized salt is introduced in the United States on

May 1. Iodized salt is now used in table salt across the globe, and its introduction to the U.S. is credited to Canadian-born pediatrician David Murray Cowie, who ultimately persuaded various salt retailers to utilize iodized salt to combat health problems, including goiters, that were linked to existing salts.

• Russian aviator and schoolteacher Zinaida Kokorina makes her first solo flight on May 3. Kokorina is the first woman pilot in military history. (Continued On Page 11A)

It’s been some time since we have reported on the status of our revision of Lambert’s Pennsylvania Dutch Dictionary, which was published by the Pennsylvania German Society in 1924 - just one year before Bischli and Gnippli were born. During the month of February, we were able to upgrade our CPT “Waddefresser,” so that by the time you read this ECK we will have a hard disk drive attached to our CPT “Waddefresser” and be able to have Lambert’s entire dictionary available for recall at any moment. With a new Disk Sort program, we will be able to alphabetize all of the words on a diskette (hundreds of words) or all of the words on the hard disk (thousands of words).

In this ECK, we are listing the words Lambert gives beginning with the letter S (listed on his page 129). We have capitalized the nouns (Lambert’s sach to our Sach), respelled a few of the words (Lambert’s saee to our saehe; Lambert’s saejezaah to our Saegezaah; saaje to our saage, etc.) and realphabetized the list.

The abbreviations Lambert uses above are: m = masculine (der); G = German; F = feminine (die); n = neuter (es); pp =

past participle; F = French; E = English. The list as it stands above illustrates the very first step we take in our revision of Lambert’s entire dictionary, ca. 200 pages in length. Once we have Lambert’s entire dictionary, 16,438 entries, recorded on our hard disk in the form given above, we will add all the ca. 5,200 Dutch words we published in our 1970 “Abridged Pennsylvania German Dictionary.” Of course, we will alphabetize as we go. That means that when we encounter an unusual word in the dialect we can immediately check to see whether it is in our revised dictionary on our hard disk. In addition, we will be able to add sentences in which the use of these words is illustrated. (Lambert illustrates the use of a few words, but not very many.) Forms which Lambert does not list also need to be added. For instance, the plural of Sack (Seck), the plural of Saddelgaul (Saddelgeil), the plural of Saegblock (Saegbleck), the plural of Saet (?), the plural of Saldaadekapp (?), etc.

We are convinced that there are many, many more than 21,638 (16,438 + 5,200) words in Dutch! IN ADDITION to adding those words Lambert does not give, we need to add sentences which illustrate the use of many verbs (singe, lache, danse, schlofe, etc.) in our MUDDERSPROOCH.

Movie Night In Broad Street Park

The free, family-friendly movie, “Mom’s Night Out” will be shown at Broad Street Park in Akron on Friday, May 17, beginning at dusk. Volunteer Darryl Witmer will be hosting the Akron event.

Children and their parents are invited to bring along lawn chairs and blankets and sit in the hockey rink area of the Broad Street

Park to await the start of the film. Free popcorn and snacks will be served.

Witmer said, “small towns thrived on community events for years, and my intention is to offer more community activities in Akron, especially utilizing Broad Street Park.” Lately, Witmer noticed that people are enjoying the park more than ever and he is glad for the variety of activities he sees.

100 Years Ago This Month

• Erich Ludendorff is elected to the Reichstag in Germany on May 4. Ludendorff ran under the banner of the National Socialist Freedom Movement, which was standing in for the banned Nazi Party.

• Sophie Lyons is murdered in Detroit on May 8 at age 75. Lyons was a notorious criminal in the postAmerican Civil War era, but abandoned her criminal life and spent her later years supporting causes related to the rehabilitation of juvenile delinquents. On the day of her death, Lyons allowed three men into her home, likely hoping to rehabilitate them. However, the men refused her help, ransacked her home and killed her.

• George Buchanan introduces a home rule bill for Scotland in the British House of Commons on May 9. The ensuing debate becomes a shouting match, and the session is ultimately adjourned.

• On May 10, 29-year-old lawyer J. Edgar Hoover becomes Acting Director of the Bureau of Investigation, which would eventually become the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI). Hoover would remain in the post until his death from a heart attack in 1972.

• Prohibition ends in Alberta, Canada, on May 12 when two governmentowned liquor stores open in the province.

• Former Ontario treasurer Peter Smith and financier Aemilius Jarvis are arrested on May 13. Each man is charged with theft and conspiracy to defraud the provincial government in what became known as the Ontario Bond Scandal. Smith and Jarvis are ultimately acquitted of theft

and fraud, but both are found guilty of conspiracy.

• On May 14, a committee of the Methodist church recommends that the church never again participate in any type of warfare. The committee, convened in Massachusetts, votes 76 to 37 in favor of the church never engaging in warfare under any type of circumstances, including self-defense.

• Chinese Foreign Minister Wellington Koo survives an assassination attempt on May 15. A package containing a bomb and addressed to Koo is delivered to his home, but a servant opens the package and is killed.

• The wooden roller coaster The Giant Dipper opens at Santa Cruz Beach Boardwalk on May 17. In July 2012, the park celebrated the 60 millionth rider to ride The Giant Dipper, which is now a National Historic Landmark.

• On May 19, the American Telephone and Telegraph Company uses telephone lines to transmit images for the first time. Over a twohour period, the firm

transmits 15 photographs from its office in Cleveland to company headquarters in New York City.

• Fourteen-year-old Bobby Franks is kidnapped on May 21 in Chicago. Franks’s parents receive a ransom note demanding $10,000 on May 22, but the boy’s body is discovered near Wolf Lake before any money is paid. Nathan Leopold, Jr. and Richard Loeb confess to the murder on May 31.

• A nine-day conference that becomes a power struggle between Soviet Communist Party leaders Joseph Stalin and Leon Trotsky opens in Moscow on May 23. The Thirteenth Congress of the Communist Party is the first conference since the death of First

Secretary Vladimir Lenin roughly five months earlier.

• Beulah Annan is acquitted of murder in Chicago on May 25. Annan shot and killed her lover Harry Kalstedt, and her ultimately sensationalized trial ended in acquittal when it was determined she acted in selfdefense. The story eventually inspired the play “Chicago,” which has since been adapted into films as well.

• The Battle of Turubah is fought on May 26 between the Kingdom of Hejaz and the Sultanate of Nejd. The battle would ultimately determine the fate of the region that would become Saudi Arabia.

• The United States Border Patrol is created on May 28 to prevent illegal entry into the United States from Mexico and Canada.

• A munitions depot explodes in Bucharest on May 29. The explosion shakes the city, causes damage to the royal palace and claims the lives of many.

• Italian politician Giacomo Matteotti is shouted down as he protests the outcome of the previous month’s election during a speech at the Chamber of Deputies on May 30.

Matteotti claims the Fascist Party employed intimidation tactics to win the election.

The 39-year-old socialist leader is kidnapped and murdered by the Fascists’ secret police 11 days after delivering his speech.

A sling and a stone.

Scripture: 1 Samuel 17:50 - “So David prevailed over the Philistine with a sling and a stone.”

This account of David’s victory over Goliath is full of zeal for God and practical lessons for the spiritual life. It’s no wonder God said of David, “He was a man after God’s own heart.” Let’s get right to it. Think of it! The entire army of Israel was facing off with this Giant who taunted Israel and her God. Let’s look at the scripture account.

“Then a champion named Goliath, who was from Gath, came out from the Philistine camp. He was six cubits and a span in height (9’ 8” tall),

and he had a bronze helmet on his head. He wore a bronze coat of mail weighing five thousand shekels (156 lbs.), and he had armor of bronze on his legs and a javelin of bronze slung between his shoulders. Ignore sarcasm, false accusations and criticism. David ignored his brother’s sarcasm and false accusations. His brother even presumed to know the motives of David’s heart. Apparently God knew the condition of David’s heart and his motives. Never fear false accusations and verbal assaults. David didn’t return evil for evil, he just ignored his brother’s attempt to belittle him. Let’s look at his brother Eliab’s statement, “Why have you come down here?” he asked. “And with whom did you leave those few sheep in the wilderness?

I know your pride and wickedness of heart you have come down to see the battle!” Of course David wanted to see the battle. Why not, it’s good that he did. David was just obeying what his father commanded him. Be bold, be courageous, and ignore the stone throwers. Persecution is part and parcel of discipleship. It’s interesting that this criticism comes from his own family. Don’t think that to be strange.

Christ said, “A profit is not without honor, except in his own home town.” Real discipleship means we have to be prepared to accept being marginalized, criticized and persecuted. “Blessed are you when people insult you and persecute you, and falsely say all kinds of evil against you because of Me. Rejoice and be glad, for your reward in heaven is great; for in the same way they persecuted the prophets who were before you” (Matthew 5:1012).

Guard your heart, and keep your motives pure. David’s motive was righteous, no one else made any kind of statement like this, “Just who is this uncircumcised Philistine, that he should defy the armies of the living God?” Jesus states that what comes out of our mouth reveals what is in our heart. “Out of the abundance of the heart the mouth speaks” (Luke 6:4). David was jealous for his God. We should feel the same when others use the name of the Lord our God in vain. It should bother us. Yes, David did ask what

to make an offer as Saul did. Gifts don’t matter much if you aren’t alive to receive them. The description of Saul and the all of the rest of the army was that they were all afraid, very afraid. Remember, this was going on for 40 days, morning and evening. That was plenty of time for someone to come forward…but no one did, only David.

Harold E. Trimble

Harold E. Trimble, 69, of Ephrata, passed away on Wednesday, May 1, 2024, at his home.

He was born in Quarryville, son of the late Harry and Dorothy (Grimsey) Trimble and was the husband of Kathy A. (Shupp) Trimble.

He enjoyed mud sales and auctions, hunting, fishing, and flower gardening, but being “Pappy” was his favorite pasttime.

Harold worked as a mason for many years prior to his retirement.

Dear Mom,

It is only 3 months since you left us to enter the gates of Heaven to be with Dad and I miss you and think of you every passing day! I am still having difficulty processing that you are gone! I have to assimilate this new reality of not being able to celebrate this Mother’s Day with you and it will be hard!

My fondest memories of you are how strong, courageous and brave you have always been and even up until your final moments of life! These memories will always be my keepsake with which I will never part, you will always and forever be in my heart!
