The Lancaster County Office of Aging, Lititz

Senior Center, located at Lititz United Methodist Church, 201 East Market Street, Lititz, is open

Monday, Wednesday and Thursday, from 8:30 a.m. until 1:00 p.m., with lunch

served at noon. There is no cost to attend.

The Center serves independent Lancaster County seniors ages 60 and up from Ephrata, Rothsville, Akron, Neffsville and Lititz areas. Ephrata is also served by van service. Reservations for lunch and transportation must be made by 10:00 a.m., one day in advance, by calling the Center at 717626-2800.

John A. Reich

John A Reich, 81, of Reinholds, passed peacefully on Saturday, March 2, 2024, at the Reading Hospital after a brief illness.

Born and raised in Reinholds, he was the son of the late John R. and Carrie L. (Weiders) Reich.

He was a graduate of Cocalico High School, class of 1962.

John and his wife, Estella F. (Martzall) Reich, enjoyed lifelong careers in general construction, the two retiring in 2012 as the owners and operators of the family’s general construction business, EF Martzall, Inc in Reinholds.

As a young boy John tagged along with his father to the fire hall, sparking his commitment to service and to the Reinholds Fire Company. John became a firefighter at the age of sixteen and bravely served the fire company as a Driver, and held several officer positions over his lifetimefirst as Financial Secretary, then as an Assistant Chief, and fourteen years as Fire Chief. He completed his years of service to the fire company as a Trustee and Driver; at age 79, John drove the truck to his last fire call before retiring. He never missed an opportunity to work at the Reinholds Firemen’s Carnivals and raised his family in that same service mindset. Having selflessly put the needs of

others before his own, he leaves behind a legacy at the Reinholds fire hall, as his sons and grandsons follow in his footsteps.

A member of Swamp Christian Fellowship (formerly Swamp UCC) since his marriage to Estella, John worshiped alongside his family and assumed responsibility for the maintenance of the church property, faithfully serving as a Trustee for many years until the time of his passing.

John served his community as a Charter member of the Reinholds Lions Club from its inception in 1965, was awarded the Melvin Jones award for his service, and continued to serve the community as a member of the Denver Lions Club since 2016.

John will be remembered by his family for the time spent together and the

cherished memories that were created together, while serving, working, spending time at the family cabin in Sullivan County, celebrating holidays, and just celebrating life. In addition to his wife of 61 years, John is survived by daughters: Anita L. Lied (Scott) and Audrey L. Lafferty (Vince) of Denver, sons: Kurt A. Reich (Chris Trostle) and Kent A. Reich (Liz Roman) of Reinholds. He was adored by grandchildren: Olivia Rutter (Jeff), Margot Groner (Stephen), Savannah Simun (Chris), Josh Wingenroth (Allison Lynch), Jordan Wingenroth (Catie Eckman), Alyssa Wingenroth, Dustin Reich (Laura Sensenig), Nick Reich, Danielle Reich, Bethany Rutt, Gabi Rutt, Evan Oberholtzer, CC Ray, and John Robert; and great-grandchildren: Benton, Nora and Winslow Rutter; Auden and London Groner; Noah and Cade Wingenroth. A brother-in-law, Larry L Gensemer and sister-in-law, Ernestine M Gensemer also survive him, in addition to his sister, Judy A. Hibshman and five nieces and nephews and their families.

In addition to his parents, John was predeceased by a brother, Robert E. Crouse.

In lieu of flowers, please consider a contribution in John’s memory to one of the organizations that were important to him: Swamp Christian Fellowship (390 Swamp Church Rd., Reinholds); Reinholds Fire Company (138 W. Main St., Reinholds); or Denver Lions Club (425 Locust St., Denver).

A visitation was held at Swamp Christian Fellowship on Thursday, March 7, 2024.

An additional visitation was held on Friday, March 8, 2024, followed by the funeral service at 10am, with Rev. Craig Frazier officiating; interment to follow at the Swamp Cemetery.

Willis H. Fox, 91, of Clay Township, Lancaster County, passed away on February 27, 2024, in his home. Born in Ephrata, a son of the late Clarence and Sally (Horning) Fox, he was married 59 years to Shirley Ann Fox until her passing in December of 2016. Willis was an army veteran, serving in the Korean War. He retired from Rutt’s Custom Kitchens in Goodville in 1993. Willis was an avid antique collector with a popular stand at Shupp’s Grove in Adamstown. His keen eye for valuable antiques and love for his family and friends will be deeply missed.

Willis is survived by three children: Yvonne (Curt) Bergman of Adamstown; John (Pam) Fox of Frystown; and Kirk Fox of Reinholds; eight grandchildren, Shane, Josh, Jeremy, Cody, Hunter, Jaclyn, Broc; three greatgrandchildren, Elaina, Brantley and Luca; sister, Erma; and brother, Marlin. Along with his wife, Willis is predeceased by daughter-inlaw, Rebekah “Beckie” (Kirk) Fox.

Patricia Ann Ressler, 92, Elizabethtown, formerly of Ephrata, passed away on Friday, February 23.

She was the wife of the late Clarence I. Ressler, and the late Paul H. Hoover.

She is survived by three sons: Perry, husband of Sheila (Horst) Hoover, Elizabethtown; Kevin Ressler, companion of Wendy Onda, Lititz; and Andy, husband of Jackie (Christ) Ressler, Mount Joy; five grandchildren; three greatgrandchildren; and a sister, Joyce Rohrer.

Mary Ann Adams, 88 (known as Marie) of Ephrata passed away Tuesday, February, 27, 2024.

Formerly from New Holland, she moved to Keystone Villa in Ephrata along with her husband, Robert Adams.

Besides her husband, she is survived by a son, Mark Adams, husband to Suzanne, Ephrata; two daughters: Deb Minnerly, wife to Ken, Manheim, and Linda Hoover, wife to Mark, Narvon; 6 grandchildren: Matthew, Brian, Jason, David, Leanne and Justin; 5 greatgrandchildren: Kaylie, Kara, Maddie, Ryland, and Bryson; two brothers: Kenneth Weddermann, husband to Ruth, Ball Grounds, Georgia, and Ray Weddermann, husband to Gloria, Sparks,

Nevada.

She was preceded in death by her parents, and two brothers, Willian (Bill) Weddermann and Richard (Dick) Weddermann, both from New Jersey, a grandchild, Christopher Adams, and a greatgrandchild, Caden Buckner.

Gerry Raber, 94, Lititz, passed away on Tuesday, February 27.

She was the wife of the late Chester (Chet) A. Raber.

Herbert W. Flosdorf, 73, husband of Barbara A. (Bigelow), Lititz, passed away on Thursday, February 29.

Besides his wife, he is survived by two sons: Dan Flosdorf, husband of Kristina, and Peter Flosdorf, husband of Carmen; three grandchildren; and two brothers: Bob and Barry.

Alvin A. Eberly, 92, Reinholds, passed away on Friday, March 1.

He was the husband of the late Bessie Irene (Miller) Eberly.

We are delighted to be able to share D.B. Stauffer’s Dutch version of I Don’t Know Who with the readers of the Ephrata Shopping News. It provides a pleasant change of pace and turns our thoughts in other directions.

We hope the publication of this translation will encourage others to take a favorite English poem or story and write it in Dutch. We are always looking for fresh material in the dialect. Losst uns net im Schtich!

features speaker, Karen Knight of Heartsongs Ministries, Inc. An inspirational speaker, concert artist and actress, Karen is probably best-known for one of her many lead roles at Sight and Sound’s Millennium Theater as Mrs. Noah in the renowned production, “Noah.” Her inspirational speaking combined with singing and storytelling has taken her all over the United States, Italy, Germany, South America, Asia and Israel. She has performed with many of the Gaither Homecoming Artists, the Brooklyn Tabernacle Soloists and Sandy Patti, as well as for many events in Washington, D.C.

Lunch will be served followed by an afternoon tour of St. Paul’s “Sacred Grounds” and prayer labyrinth.

Regarded As Holy

Scripture: Leviticus 10:3

- “By those who come near Me I will be regarded as holy, and before all the people I must be glorified.”

Last week, we looked at three cases in particular that demonstrate how God regards holiness for His people in both the Old and New Testaments. Nadab and Abihu were incinerated when fire came out from the Temple because they offered “Strange Fire” as priests. We also looked at Ananias and Sapphira, who were stricken dead because they lied to the Holy Spirit as described by Peter. Lastly, Moses was forbidden to take the nation into the Promised Land because instead of speaking to the rock to produce water as God commanded, he struck it twice with his rod.

The word Holy is used 87 times in Leviticus. The Hebrew word for holy literally means, “Separate” or “Set apart.” God gave explicit instructions to the Hebrew Children that when they came into the Promised Land, they would stay separate from the people of the land.

They were not to take wives from other nations. They did not obey this command. Many years later the wisest man on earth, Solomon, was a prime example of what would happen if you did. His wives turned his heart away from God and toward false gods.

“For when Solomon was old, his wives turned his heart away to follow other gods; and his heart was not wholly devoted to the LORD his God, as the heart of his father David had been” (1st Kings 11:4).

They were not to participate in any of the worship practices of the people in the land. God condemned all of Canaanite idol worship and the sacrificing of their own children to false gods. This is the reason God commanded the seven nations of Canaan

to be destroyed. Once again, Israel failed to destroy and separate, but allowed the original inhabitants of the land to stay in the land as forced labor. This proved to be disastrous for the nation. God said He would no longer help them take possession of the land. In the book of Judges, He said, “Yet you have forsaken Me and served other gods. Therefore I will deliver you no more” (Judges 10:13). “But they were unfaithful to the God of their fathers, and they prostituted themselves with the gods of the peoples of the land” (1st Chronicles 5:25).

They were to make no covenant with the people of the land. Because they made covenants with the inhabitants to stay in their land, these people were a thorn in their side continually.

If you look later in the book of Judges 2:14, the Canaanite people would raid Israel, stealing their crops and stealing their livestock. Israel was instructed not to make any alliance with other nations either. God wanted Israel to depend on Him alone for all victories, protection and governance.

The nation of Israel (God’s chosen people) were and are to be a holy witness for God in the world. The Bible declares in Deuteronomy 7:6, “For you are a people holy to the Lord your God

The Lord your God has chosen you to be a people for His treasured possession out of all the peoples who are on the face of the earth” (Joshua 4:24). “That all the peoples of the earth may know the hand of the Lord, that it is mighty, that you may fear the Lord your God forever.”

I am not sure why some believers don’t spend any time in the Old Testament. It is so rich with examples, yes examples, for us today even though we are not Israel. The church must see the Holiness of God, understand what it means and seek to be obedient. Could it be that the current rot of this once great nation is the result of Christians who gave up on being the salt and light? If we are to serve our generation, we must “Regard Him as Holy and glorify Him before the people.”

Thomas Neil Sweigart

It is with heavy hearts the family of Dr. Thomas Neil Sweigart “Neil”, 76, of Vincennes, Indiana, announce his sudden passing. A cherished husband, father, grandfather, community leader, and devoted member of various organizations, he was surrounded by loved ones when he ended his journey on Earth on March 5, 2024 from a brain aneurysm.

He leaves his wife of 49 years, Margaret “Margy” Sweigart of Vincennes; his sons: Stephen Sweigart of Vincennes, and Dr. Christopher Sweigart and his wife, Dr. Alecia Sweigart of Pittsburgh, PA; his grandchildren: Clark, Theodore “Teddy” and Cecilia “Ce Ce” Sweigart; his siblings: Eileen Sweigart of Lancaster, PA; Martha Brunner of Lancaster, PA; Frieda Schmidt and her husband, Marty of Downingtown, PA; Karen Sweigart of Sinking Spring, PA; Kurt Sweigart and his

wife, Jane of Edmond, OK; and Kent Sweigart and his wife, Jane of Ephrata, PA; and many close friends.

Neil was preceded in death by his parents Floyd and Grace (Oberholtzer) Sweigart of Reamstown, PA. A native of Reamstown, Neil was a 1965 graduate of Cocalico High School, Denver, PA, where he was very active in the sports and music programs. After receiving his Bachelor of

Science degree in Music Education from Indiana University of Pennsylvania, and his Master of Science in Music from Indiana University, Bloomington, IN, he served as Band Director for Juniata Senior High School in Mifflintown, PA, for five years.

He then pursued his degree as a Doctor of Chiropractor (DC) at Logan University in Chesterfield, Missouri. He practiced chiropractic medicine in Vincennes and loved his work for 41 years, always ready to use his healing hands in treatment.

Neil dedicated his time and efforts to numerous causes and organizations in Vincennes including: serving as a respected member of the Kiwanis Club; playing a pivotal role in the Vincennes Education Foundation (VEF), where he served as its First Chairman of the VEF Golf outing; and contributing much of his time to the Indiana Military Museum. He also found joy in music as a member of the Hoosier Harmonizers, showcasing his vocal talents in the Barber Shop Quartet.

Remembered for his love for sports and the outdoors,

Neil reveled in activities like golf, pickleball, and racquetball. A familiar sight at Gregg Park, Neil’s love for horseshoes was well-known as he took pleasure in pitching horseshoes regularly. His dedication to the Vincennes Horseshoe Club as its President highlighted his commitment to fostering camaraderie and sport in the community.

He was passionate about educating others about living healthy lifestyles and hosted a talk show, “Health News You Can Use,” for three years. Every winter, Neil and Margy enjoyed relaxation, activities, and meeting new friends at Raintree Village, Florida. Neil also enjoyed remodeling homes for resale in the Vincennes area with his son Stephen.

In honor of his memory, A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11:30 a.m. on March 23, 2024 at Sacred Heart Catholic, 2004 N. 2nd St., Vincennes, IN 47591. Friends may visit with Neil’s family from 9:30 am until the time of Mass at 11:30 am. A time to reflect on his life, legacy, and the impact he had on those around him.

May Neil rest in eternal peace, his spirit forever present in the lives of those he touched.

Ruth Keiper DeLancey

Ruth Keiper DeLancey, 88, of Myerstown, passed away on Thursday, March 7, 2024, at StoneRidge Retirement Living Community.

She was born in Denver to the late Raymond and Naomi (Whitcraft) Keiper.

Ruth worked for many years at the Horseshoe Tavern and over 40 years at VFW Womelsdorf, where she enjoyed meeting and cooking for the patrons. She also loved cooking and having picnics for her family. She will truly be missed by all.

Ruth is survived by 7 children: Kenneth (Dona), Karen Keppley (James), Anthony Ambra (Elaine), Michael, Gina and partner Rod Fisher, Angela Bainbridge (John); 10 grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; 1 greatgreat-grandchild; and 3 nieces, Shirley Achey, Marjorie Burkins, and Grace Reider.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by 1st husband, Vernon Sweigart, 2nd husband, Charles

Norma Ramer

Norma Ramer, born June 4, 1963, 60 years old, entered into the sweet arms of Jesus on March 6, 2024, following a lengthy and difficult health journey. Our dearest wife, mother, grandmother, and friend will be deeply missed. Our greatest comfort is knowing she is with Jesus whom she often spoke fondly of and dearly loved!

Norma was the daughter of Omar and Annie (Zook) Stoltzfus.

She lovingly leaves behind her best friend, her rock and her right arm, Douglas Ramer, whom she married on September 24, 1983. Doug and Norma were members of Cornerstone Mennonite Fellowship Church in Ephrata, PA.

She spoke warmth and connection into the lives of each of their three children and nine grandchildren. She loved their visits, babysitting and hot summer pool days. All are surviving, daughter Emily, wife of Travis Rutt of Ephrata, PA; son Justin, husband of Kelsey Ramer of Lititz, PA; son Travis, husband

of Chelsea Ramer of Manheim, PA; nine grandchildren, Maya, Dawson, Emerson, Colton and Eliana Rutt, Avery, Remington, Everhett, Adelyn Ramer; two brothers Jonas, husband of Rachel Stoltzfus of Pine Grove, PA, and David, husband of Linda Stoltzfus of Landrum, SC; sister Hilda Martin, wife of Clyde Martin, Bethel, PA; sister-in-law, Sara Stoltzfus of Myerstown, PA; and numerous nieces and nephews. Norma’s parents, Omar and Annie (Zook) Stoltzfus of Pine Grove, PA, and brother Melvin preceded her in death.

During her declining health journey Norma loved her sitting room overlooking the rolling hills, grazing cattle and many types of birds visiting her feeders. On weaker days she spoke softly her encouraging words of “God’s got this.” “All for Jesus.” “He is so good.” With visitors she shared, gratefully, who brought this plant, that flower, the soups, and meals.

Norma spent many hours at Lighthouse Thrift Store, feeling well or not so well, sorting through bags and boxes of donated clothing items. Frequently she would delight over a fun find for a grandchild or another. All the while encouraging the team of volunteers with her dry humor, cheerful comments and one on one chats during her rest breaks. She was a joy and will be greatly missed by her grieving family and friends.

A viewing will be held on

Monday, March 11, 2024, from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 PM, at New Beginnings Charis Fellowship Church, 430 E. Lincoln Avenue, Myerstown. An additional viewing will be held on Tuesday, March 12, 2024, from 9 to 10 AM, at the church, followed by her funeral service at 10 AM. Interment will follow the service and take place in Meckville Mennonite Cemetery, 1020 Meckville Rd., Bethel.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions in Norma’s memory may be made to Urban Lighthouse Ministries, 1349 Vernon Street, Harrisburg, PA 17104.

Congratulations to Elizabeth Mercado, a seventh grader at Cocalico Middle School (CMS), for qualifying for the WITF Central PA Spelling Bee! Elizabeth was one of three middle schoolers from Cocalico to win the CMS building competition. They then joined over 200 students in grades fourth through eighth from across 11 surrounding counties to demonstrate their knowledge in the WITF written spelling bee. Elizabeth successfully passed the written exam and will now be one of 36 spellers to participate in the oral bee to be held on Saturday, March 23, at the WITF Public Media Center in Harrisburg. The winner of this will then move on to the Scripps National Spelling Bee in Washington, D.C. later this spring.

Civil Air Patrol Holds Annual Awards Banquet

The adult and cadet members of Lancaster’s Civil Air Patrol squadron hosted a guest speaker who is a member of the Senior Executive Service during their Annual Banquet Monday, January 29, at St. Peter’s Evangelical Lutheran Church, Lititz. Major Jerome Broad, the Deputy Commander of Group 2 of Pennsylvania Wing, served as the emcee. During the banquet, Squadron 304 members were presented Achievement and Service Awards.

Retired Air Force Colonel Lansen P. Conley gave an engaging speech about his

career and experiences working with the military. He is the Director of Logistics and Logistics Services at the Air Force Life Cycle Management Center. He is responsible for life cycle logistics and product support management for approximately 400 programs. As a graduate of the Air Force Academy, he has had a long career in the Air Force, serving as a vice wing, group and squadron commander, working on satellite systems, aircraft maintenance, and security assistance. He retired from active duty in 2011 and became a civil servant.

Achievement awards presented include Cadet Staff Sergeant Joshua Hagan who was promoted to Cadet Technical

Sergeant and received the Rickenbacker Award, Cadet Second Lieutenant Aaron Keohane was presented his Billy Mitchell Award, and Cadet Captain Slater Shannon was presented with the Achievement 12 Award. Senior members were recognized for the awards that were presented earlier in the month at the Group 2 Conference at Fort Indiantown Gap.

Jesse Jones Squadron 304 meets each Monday (except holidays) at 7:00 p.m. in the Venture Jets hangar, which is located, on the airport near the intersection of Lititz Pike and Millport Road. Visitors are always welcome.

Joanna Ehrhart Honored By Denver-Ephrata Rotary Club

Joanna Ehrhart was recognized as the Ephrata High School January Student of the Month by the Denver­Ephrata Area Rotary Club. Joanna is a senior at Ephrata High School. She is a member of the National Honor Society, the Science Honor Society, and Leo Club. Joanna has volunteered as a Fulton buddy at Fulton Elementary where she connects with students to build relationships. She

also volunteered with the Intermediate School Corny Days and with the Ephrata Fair entering records from fair results. She volunteers at her church operating cameras for their live stream and in the church nursery. Joanna has been a decorated member of the field hockey team making the Section 2 first team during her sophomore, junior and senior year. She was also honorable mention for the 2A All State field

Families can register on Monday, March 25, beginning at 9:00 a.m. using the library’s website calendar. Details regarding storytime days and times for babies, toddlers and preschoolers are available on the library’s website.

* Here’s a fun afternoon of play just waiting to happen: Check with your local grocery store or big box store to see if it has uncrushed cardboard boxes. Get several to create a cardboard city in your living room or child’s bedroom. They can be decorated to look like anything, or cut, trimmed and taped into most any shape. Kids even like to stock them with pillows and blankets for a cozy sleepover. When you’re done, break them down and recycle until the next adventure. J.J. in Florida

* Like to use paper towels to dry your clean hands? Set them aside to dry, then you can use them for cleaning with glass cleaner or other solutions.

* Air­popped popcorn is better for you and healthier. If you have an air popper, you’ll also have a jar of popcorn kernels. Keep them in the refrigerator or even the freezer. View Solar Eclipse At Library

Come join the Lititz Public Library on Monday, March 25 at 4:00 p.m. for a fun and educational program called, “There Goes the Sun, Totally.”

On Monday, April 8, a total solar eclipse will cross North America, passing over Mexico, the United States, and Canada. A total solar eclipse happens when the moon passes between the

sun and earth, completely blocking the face of the sun. The sky will darken as if it were dawn or dusk.

The library is getting ready for the Total Solar Eclipse with information and activities about sunlight and shadows. Participants will be given solar eclipse glasses and make a case to keep them in!

East Cocalico Lions Honor Student Of The Month

Each month, the East Cocalico Lions Club honors a Cocalico High School student for their achievements and for being one of the High School’s and the community’s finest. Each student is presented with a certificate and a monetary gift along with a gift from the Adamstown Public Library.

Recently, at a club meeting that she and her parents attended, Kyley Gensemer was honored as the Club’s Student of the Month by the members of the East Cocalico Lions Club. Kyley believes in the Lion Clubs motto of “We Serve” by representing the Lions clubs of the Cocalico School Area by serving with the Cocalico High School Leo Club, a Lions club service organization within the High School. She is a member of the National Honor Society and also participates in the High School’s Global Scholars Program (students participating in this program gain a better understanding of different

cultures of people in nations throughout the world, and of themselves).

Besides being Honored as the Club’s Student of the Month, other honors and awards Kyley has achieved is being recognized as a “Student of the Month” in other subjects at the High School, having artwork in newspapers and publishing an illustrated children’s book. In her spare time, she volunteers at food drives, cleanups and helps at

Elementary School Events. Kyley plans to major in Art Education at either Temple or Kutztown University.
