elcome to the 30 th Annual WOBM Christmas Classic , hosted by Townsquare
W
Media-New Jersey and the Toms River Regional Schools. Once again 32 varsity teams (16 boys and 16 girls) will be participating and playing 52 games over seven days in both the Pine Belt Arena and the Toms River North Gymnasium. The tournament was established in 1984 as a replacement for the Southern Regional Roundball Festival and began with 8 Boys team playing over three days at Ocean County College. It has grown into one of the largest holiday tournaments in New Jersey and was expanded to 32 teams in 2003 when it moved to the Pine Belt Arena. Special thanks to the Toms River Regional School District for hosting the event and for the cooperation of their Central Administration, Board of Education and Athletic Department

WOBM Christmas Classic Tiff Off Brunch

or some the unofficial start of the WOBM Christmas Classic is the Tip-off Brunch hosted by the Clarion Hotel and Conference Center of Toms River. More than 270 players, coaches and guests attended the December 16th event which General Manager Bob Van Bochove and his staff at the Clarion have hosted for 18 years. After everyone made one, two or three trips to the buffet line they heard from tournament founder and director Kevin Williams who talked about the 30-year history of the tournament and the growth from 8 to 32 teams.
One of the highlights is the “Tip-off Brunch” which was held on December 16th at the Clarion Hotel & Conference Center in Toms River where more than 200 coaches, players, officials, sponsors and guests gathered to “tip off”
tournament week. Also announced at that time were the recipients of this year’s WOBM Christmas Classic scholarships which are awarded to players who participated in last year’s tournament and are now college freshmen. The awards are based on the academic and not athletic performance of the student-athletes who will receive a total of $4,000 at halftime of the championship games on December 30th. Receiving $500 each will be Samantha DeCapua (Barnegat/Widener), Kendall Kiernan (Manchester/University of Delaware), Jessicha Macchi (Pt. Boro/NYU), Lindsay Shore (TRE/Providence), Alan Burdge (Wall/TCNJ), Joseph Esposito (Brick Memorial/Penn State), Andrew Sauer (Barnegat/Clemson) and John Sullivan (Brick/OCC). This brings us to $65,000 in college scholarships that have been given to participants going back to 1985.
Former Robert Morris and Rutgers University head coach Mike Rice (pictured right) was the keynote speaker and with first-hand knowledge shared the importance of learning from your mistakes with the student-athletes and coaches. Rice’s message resonated with those in attendance as he reenters the basketball world through the Neptune-based Hoop Group.
Also speaking at the brunch was Dennis Adams (pictured left), the recipient of the first Chuck Kearney Memorial Award in 1989 when he was a player at Manchester Township High School. Adams has come full circle as he’s returned to his alma mater as the building principal.
Townsquare Media Regional Vice President Greg Janoff (pictured far right) presented the Christmas Classic’s Jim Ruhnke Contribution Award to Michael Slusarz, Vice President for Marketing and Corporate Communications at Barnabas Health (pictured right). Barnabas through its local hospitals (Community, Kimball & Monmouth Medical Center) is the presenting sponsor of the tournament.

2012 Arthur W Harmon, Jr. Memorial Award
Named in honor of the late Art Harmon, a fixture as a Shore official for more than three decades. He was a 40-year member of the International Association of Approved Basketball Officials Shore Board 194, and also was a member of the Shore Soccer Officials Association for more than 20 years. He also was a longtime secretary-treasurer of the Shore board of basketball officials even after injuries had prevented him from being able to officiate games.

Speed. Strength. Agility. Power. All of which are essential markers of athleticism
in which aspiring college football players must showcase to college coaches and recruiters to prove their worth at the next level. With the increased speed of play and the amplified level of physical strength, thousands of players each year showcase their talents at various regional clinics, combines and showcases in hopes of catching the eyes and interests of college football coaches. Unfortunately, many of these combines are not only expensive and far away, but also poorly run and invalid with their testing protocols.
That is, until now.
ON SUNDAY, JANUARY 26 2014 , Reach Your Potential Training (RYPT) of Tinton Falls, NJ will be hosting their Inaugural High School Football Combine Classic where the top 72 high school football players in the tri-state area will compete amongst each other in front of college coaches, recruiters and local media groups. It will feature six testing stations, all based off the current NFL Combine testing including; vertical jump, long jump, 40 yard dash (electronic timed), pro-agility, 3-cone and bench press testing. Prizes will be awarded to the top performers in each class; including line, semi and skill positional groups. th
“We want to remove all of the uncertainty when it comes to performance testing, for the athletes, their families and the college coaches” said Adam Feit, Director of Sports Performance for RYPT and former NFL and Division I football strength and conditioning coach. “Too often during the recruiting process, players are left sending in scores and results that are not only inaccurate, but also fail to capture what they can do for a future football program. Unfortunately, if coaches don’t like what they see on paper, they will dismiss you without even looking at your film and go back to the recruiting board and look for someone else.”
That board is one in which Adam has seen at multiple Division-I programs as a college strength and conditioning coach. With stops at programs such as the NFL’s Carolina Panthers, Eastern Michigan University, University of Louisville, Arizona State and The Citadel, the message was all the same; if you don’t look good on paper, you won’t look good on film. “Sending in your times, scores and game film to prove what you can do on the field, is a vital component of the recruiting game,” said Adam. “You can’t just play your high school football season and hope a college coach notices you. You have to be pro-active. You have to let them know who you are and what you can do for them”.
It’s no surprise to see the area’s most highly recruited players go to regional camps and clinics to give the coaches a sense of what the players are capable of. With popular showcases such as the Nike ® Rivals Camp, Under Armor ® Combine and Rivals.com ® National Underclassmen Camp appearing all over the United States, registration and travel fees can add up, limiting participation from players that are athletic enough to
participate, but cannot afford the expenses.
“Our goal is to provide the most valid and reliable performance testing measurements for current high school football players looking to compete at the next level. We want to reach all corners of the Shore Conference, providing guidance and recognition to those athletes that have the potential to play collegiate football, but would be unable to afford exposure in front of coaches and recruiters at expensive regional and national clinics,” said Bobby Smith, owner and founder of RYPT, Inc. THE WOBM CHRISTMAS CLASSIC (1984-2013)

n the spring of 1984 the coaches of the eight teams participating in the Southern Regional Roundball Festival met in a classroom at Toms River High School North. After 17 years of hosting the eight-team boys holiday basketball tournament Southern was ready to give it up and the coaches agreed it needed to be moved to a more centrally-located facility and ideally one that was not a team’s home court. Sitting in the back of that room was WOBM Sports Director Kevin Williams who suggested Ocean County College as the ideal location. While the coaches liked the idea they did not think OCC would be willing to host the tournament but Williams asked them to allow him some time to work on that.
At the time WOBM was owned by a group that included Joseph Buckelew, who was a Board of Trustee at the college and enthusiastically backed the idea of having OCC host the tournament. Williams suggested that WOBM take over the control of the event and the WOBM Christmas Classic was born.
On December 26, 1984 Mr. Buckelew threw up the ceremonial “opening toss” before the first-ever game in which Manchester played Central. It turned out to be one of the classic games in tournament history as the Hawks won 86-84 on a 30-foot shot by Earl Kearney at the buzzer. Southern went on to win the tournament and under coach Jim Ruhnke would claim the first three championships.
In 1994 the WOBM Christmas Classic expanded to include a girls division and Ray Cervino’s Toms River North Lady Mariners bested a field of three other teams to win the first of their 7 titles. In 2003 the classic moved from Ocean County College to what is now the Pine Belt Arena on the campus of Toms River North. With the ability to use two gyms the tournament expanded and now features 32 teams, making in one of the largest holiday tournaments in New Jersey.
