D GURRIERI
is entering his 13th season as head coach and 22nd season overall at Manalapan High School, and with a 104-31 record leading the Braves, Gurrieri has created a winning tradition and developed Manalapan into one of the top public-school programs in the New Jersey. During his tenure as Manalapan’s head coach, Gurrieri has guided the Braves to seven Shore Conference division championships, six appearances in NJSIAA state sectional championship games, three additional appearances in the sectional semifinals and, in 2014, the program’s first and only NJSIAA state sectional championship. In 2011, Gurrieri was selected as the conference Coach of the Year by the Shore Conference Football Coaches Association, and in 2014 was selected as Central Jersey Coach of the Year by the New Jersey Football Coaches Association. Since 2010, Manalapan football players have gone on to receive 37 scholarships, including five to Ivy League schools. Two players made it to the NFL this past season with Anthony Firkser (Harvard) playing for the Tennessee Titans and Saeed Blacknall (Penn State) playing for the Oakland Raiders. Before becoming Manalapan’s head coach, Gurrieri was the Braves’ defensive coordinator from 1997 to 2003. In that seven-year period, Manalapan made five playoff appearances and reached the 2003 Central Jersey Group 4 championship game. Prior to coming to Manalapan, Gurrieri was the offensive coordinator at his alma mater, Susan Wagner High School on Staten Island, which was one of the premier programs in New York City. Susan Wagner won six NYC championships in a 10-year span, had a 48-game winning streak and was ranked 17th in the nation by USA Today. From 1985 to 1987, Gurrieri coached the running backs at his collegiate alma mater, Wagner College. A native of Staten Island, Gurrieri was a threeyear starter as a running back at Susan Wagner High School where he achieved First Team AllStaten Island and First Team All-New York City honors. He started his collegiate career at Northeastern University before returning home and playing at Wagner College where he was a two-year starter.

Gurrieri graduated from Wagner College in 1983 and earned a Bachelor of Science Degree in Business Administration with a minor in Special Education. He was a high school teacher at Susan Wagner High School before joining the New York Police Department, serving on the force from 1986 to 1993. He retired with a line-of-duty injury and currently works as a security officer at Manalapan High School.
Gurrieri was also heavily involved with the NYPD football team as a starting fullback from 1988-1999 and as the team’s offensive coordinator from 1990-1996. Gurrieri married his high school sweetheart, Debbie, in April of 1984. They have three beautiful children: Michael, married to Kristen; Eddie, married to Jackie; Nicole, married to Matt. Ed and Debbie have one precious grandson, Dominic, who is approaching his second birthday, and are excited to meet their first granddaughter, due in September.

A 1944 graduate of Keyport High School, Jerome “Bobby” Zampelle joined the United States Merchant Marines and served his country for four years. Upon leaving the service, Zampelle enrolled at the Panzer School of Physical Education (known today as Montclair State University) where he excelled at baseball. He turned down an offer to sign with the St. Louis Cardinals to return to his native Keyport, raise a family and pursue his ambition of being a teacher and coach. He obtained his first teaching job in the Union Beach school system and eventually moved over to the Keyport school system in 1952. While at Keyport, Zampelle coached football, basketball and baseball with his baseball team winning the NJSIAA Central Jersey Group 2 championship in 1961. He eventually became the principal at Keyport High School before retiring in 1988. Following his career as an educator, Zampelle became a respected and sought-after sports official throughout both the Shore Conference and rest of the state, officiating football as well as basketball and baseball for 49 years. He retired from officiating in 2009 after he had officiated many state championship games in all three sports. Today, Zampelle and his wife of 65 years, the former Edith Masson, continue to enjoy life in their beloved Keyport where they raised six children and have been blessed with 10 grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren. We honor “Bobby Z”, as he has come to be known, with his induction into the Shore Football Coaches Foundation Hall of Fame.

ver the last decade, Rumson-Fair Haven has established itself as one of the premier public-school football programs in New Jersey, and the one constant throughout has been Jerry Schulte.
O
As the Bulldogs current head coach and former defensive coordinator, Schulte has played a part in all six of Rumson’s NJSIAA state sectional championships – two as head coach and four as defensive mastermind. This past season, Rumson won its fifth sectional title in the last six years and then emerged victorious in the inaugural NJSIAA Bowl Series to cap a fantastic 10-2 season. After falling to Somerville in 2017 Central Jersey Group 3 final to snap their streak of five straight sectional titles, the Bulldogs earned revenge to reclaim the championship with an epic road victory. Once again taking on Somerville, this time on the Pioneers’ home field, Rumson’s ground game ruled the day in a 42-35 victory that brought the Central Jersey Group 3 title back to Ridge Road. Senior running back Alex Maldjian put forth a legendary performance with 271 yards and four touchdowns on a whopping 49 carries behind a mauling offensive line of Ryan McCann, Evan Davis, Tim Kelly, Ethan Ardolino and Spencer Short. Senior tight end Ian O’Connor added a pair of touchdown catches from junior quarterback Collin Coles, including a 71yard score in the first quarter that answered a Somerville touchdown. Rumson then took on Woodrow Wilson and record-setting quarterback Nick Kargman in the Central-South Group 3 Bowl Game at MetLife Stadium. Maldjian had another monster game with 40 carries for 204 yards and a touchdown, plus a two-point conversion run in a 26-18 victory. Sophomore Johnny Volker added a touchdown run while Coles tossed touchdowns to O’Connor and senior Jackson McCarthy, the latter coming with 1:15 left in regulation
to snap an 18-all tie. It was also a big game for Rumson’s defense, which held the Tigers’ high-scoring offense to just 18 points thanks to several timely plays. Senior linebacker Keegan Woods, the Shore Sports Network Defensive Player of the Year, was outstanding with 11 tackles, an interception and a game-changing forced fumble. Prior to its successful state playoff run, Rumson won the Shore Conference Colonial Division title with a perfect 5-0 record against the likes of St. John Vianney, Brick, Brick Memorial, Freehold and Middletown North. Rumson had 10 players selected to the Shore Sports Network All-Shore teams, including First Team selections Maldjian, McCann, O’Connor, Woods and defensive lineman Henry Sullivan. Maldjian ran for 1,702 yards and 23 touchdowns while Woods had a state-leading 178 tackles. Throughout his tenure at Rumson, Schulte has presided over a defense that has turned in several spectacular performances in championship games. When Rumson won its first sectional title in 2010, the Bulldogs shut down a tremendous Matawan offense to stun the Huskies, 13-7. The following season, the Bulldogs lost to Matawan in the state final, but the defense allowed just three points in a 3-0 defeat. Rumson’s second state title came in 2013 when it held down a powerful Weequahic team in a 13-6 victory. In 2014, Schulte’s defense suffocated Delaware Valley in a 21-0 triumph. The 2015 season saw another championship shutout as the Bulldogs blanked rival Red Bank, 21-0, to hoist their third straight title and fourth overall. Schulte is 29-7 as Rumson’s head coach and has an overall head-coaching record of 88-85-1 including his time at Wall (1990-1999) and Mater Dei Prep (1980-1984). A 1970 graduate of Keansburg High School where he was a standout fullback and middle linebacker, Schulte then played collegiately at the now-defunct Upsala College in East Orange before an injury ended his career. He transferred to Monmouth University where he graduated in 1975. Schulte began his coaching career as an assistant at Keansburg before head-coaching stops at Mater Dei and Wall. He was the offensive coordinator at Monmouth Regional from 2000 to 2004 before joining Rumson’s staff for the 2005 season. Schulte has also been a wrestling coach around the Shore Conference, serving as the head coach at Mater Dei Prep, Wall and Monmouth Regional and as an assistant at Wall and Rumson. Schulte and several members of his coaching staff, including his son, Jeremy, will lead a Monmouth County squad that includes four Rumson standouts: linebacker Christian Lanzalotto, offensive lineman Ethan Ardolino, defensive lineman Kenny Rainey and defensive back Ryan Dupree.

Brick High School
s a former player and assistant coach at Brick Township High School, most of Len Zdanowicz’s life has revolved around the Green Dragons’ football program. Playing and coaching under the legendary Warren Wolf, Zdanowicz dreamed of a day when perhaps he would be the head coach at one of the Shore Conference’s most storied programs.

That chance came four years ago, and in Zdanowicz’s short time at the helm of the green and white, Brick has remained a championship contender and one of the top teams in the Shore Conference. This past season, Brick went 8-3 and reached the NJSIAA Central Jersey Group 4 championship game behind an outstanding senior class. Senior linebacker Richie Tallmadge, senior quarterback/wide receiver/defensive back Jimmy Leblo and senior defensive back Mike McGuigan were each Shore Sports Network First Team All-Shore selections while senior offensive lineman Zach Piscope, senior wide receiver/defensive back Cole Groschel and senior defensive end Cory Englehardt were each Second Team All-Shore selections.
lead with seven interceptions. McGuigan also had a state-best seven interceptions to go along with 52 tackles. Englehardt made 102 tackles with 12 tackles for loss and five sacks while Groschel battled through injuries all season but still made impactful contributions on both sides of the ball. Piscope led a Brick offensive line that paved the way for Brick to rush for 2,093 yards and 26 touchdowns. Brick’s signature win was an impressive 42-14 victory over Middletown South in the Central Jersey Group 4 semifinals. The Dragons also had a pair of wins over Constitution Division champion Jackson Memorial. Brick had the No. 10 scoring offense in the Shore at 25.4 points per game and the No. 10 scoring defense at 12.3 points per game. The Dragons finished the season ranked No. 5 in the Shore Sports Network Top 10. Brick also reached the Central Jersey Group 4 championship game in 2016 in Zdanowicz’s second season. Zdanowicz is just the fourth coach in program history and has a 30-14 record in four seasons. Zdanowicz will have his Brick staff with him to help guide the Ocean County all-stars, as well as Lakewood head coach L.J. Clark, Lakewood assistant Evan Baubles, Pinelands head coach Matt Fuller and Hall of Fame head coach Al Saner. The Dragons will be represented on the field by Tallmadge, Groschel, McGuigan, Piscope, Englehardt, lineman Andre Edgerton and running back/kicker Jake Wynkoop. Zdanowicz is a 1990 graduate of Brick Township High School where he played offensive line and helped the Dragons capture the 1989 NJSIAA South Jersey Group 4 championship. He played collegiately at William Paterson University where he was a two-year captain and an AllNew Jersey Athletic Conference selection in 1994 and 1995. Upon graduation from college in 1997, Zdanowicz returned to Brick where he served as an offensive and defensive line coach from 1997 to 2008. He was an assistant under the late Tim Osborn at Jackson Liberty in 2009 and 2010, returned to Brick as an assistant from 2011-2012 and was the offensive coordinator at Lakewood in 2014.
Tallmadge was named the Constitution Division co-Defensive Player of the Year with 176 tackles, 12 tackles for loss and two sacks. Leblo did a little bit of everything in running for a team-high 758 yards and 12 touchdowns, leading the team in receiving with 315 yards and six touchdowns on just 13 receptions and throwing for 187 yards and two touchdowns. All Shore Game Summaries 1985 - Monmouth 14, Ocean 12 Highlights: Monmouth built a 14-0 lead and held on for the win on the strength of the running of Matawan’s Terry Underwood and the passing of Rumson-Fair Haven’s Pete Graham. Southern’s Mike Grant threw for 225 yards in the loss for Ocean. 1986 - Monmouth 22, Ocean 9 Highlights: Behind a Classic-record 161 yards rushing by Freehold’s Joe “The Jet’’ Henderson that included touchdown runs of 44 and 63 yards, Monmouth took a 5-4 lead in the series and became the first team to win back-to-back games. 1987 - Ocean 22, Monmouth 20 Highlights: The Jackson Memorial combination of quarterback Tom Tarver and tight end Steve Carr clicked on a 10-yard scoring pass with three seconds left in regulation for the game-winning touchdown to even series at five apiece. 1988 - Monmouth 28, Ocean 7 Highlights: Freehold Township quarterback Brian Gilbert triggered a 21point third quarter with a five-yard touchdown run that was followed by an 85-yard interception return for a touchdown by Matawan’s Eric Bellamy to help Monmouth roll to the win. 1989 - Ocean 23, Monmouth 18 Highlights: Brick’s Todd Durkin threw touchdown passes to Lacey’s Carl Tarricone and Toms River South’s Chip LaBarca Jr. to help even the series at six. LaBarca finished with six catches for 119 yards in the win, and St. John Vianney’s Gil Gutierrez kicked a Classic-record 52-yard field goal.
1978 - Ocean 21, Monmouth 7 Highlights: Toms River South’s George Scribellito picked off an errant lateral in the fourth quarter to seal the inaugural All Shore Classic. 1979 - Monmouth 7, Ocean 6 Highlights: Neptune’s Bob Lubischer hit Howell’s Vinnie Zambetti with a 35-yard touchdown pass in the second quarter, and Monmouth held on as Ocean scored with 15 seconds left in the game but failed on a twopoint conversion attempt. 1980 - Ocean 15, Monmouth 10 Highlights: Southern’s Cliff Walters scored on a 2-yard run and threw a 45-yard touchdown pass to Toms River North’s Cal Cassidy to put Ocean back in control of the series, 2-1. 1981 - Monmouth 22, Ocean 16 Highlights: Monmouth wiped out a 9-0 deficit behind 147 yards rushing on 21 carries by Asbury Park’s Doug Johnson, including a 25-yard touchdown run. Howell’s Randy Radecki threw a 45-yard scoring pass to Manasquan’s Tony Fleming near the end of the first half. 1982 - Ocean 17, Monmouth 16 Highlights: Toms River South’s Tom Forrester threw touchdown passes to teammate Brian Bienkowski and Point Boro’s Carlo Colombino, and Toms River South’s Jeff Lawton booted a 35-yard field goal to help Ocean hold off Monmouth. In the loss, Manasquan’s Everett Morgan nailed a 35-yard field goal and was just short on a potentially gamewinning 45-yard attempt as time expired. 1983 - Monmouth 19, Ocean 0 Highlights: Middletown North running back Chris Barnes scored two touchdowns, Wall’s Art Petracco ran for 120 yards and a touchdown, and Long Branch defensive lineman Keith Farrow led a Monmouth defense that earned the first shutout in Classic history by limiting Ocean to just 37 yards rushing. 1984 - Ocean 7, Monmouth 0 Highlights: Monsignor Donovan’s Rob Gould scored on a 3-yard run with 6:10 left in the game as Ocean earned its first shutout victory in the series.
1990 - Ocean 22, Monmouth 21 Highlights: Brick kicker Kurt Weiboldt tied Gutierrez’s record with a 52yard field goal and kicked a Classic-record three field goals in the win, including the game-winner from 28 yards with no time remaining to give Ocean its first two-game winning streak in the series. Lacey running back Keith Elias added 147 yards rushing and a touchdown catch. 1991 - Monmouth 15, Ocean 14 Highlights: A 10-yard touchdown run late in the fourth quarter from Neptune’s Bruce Pugh and a two-point conversion run by Ocean Township’s Doug Rossback put Monmouth over the top. 1992 - Monmouth 20, Ocean 0 Highlights: Middletown North quarterback Mike Hallard ran for an 11yard touchdown and threw a 19-yard touchdown pass to James Stanton to help Monmouth roll to the win. Monmouth defensive tackle Ty Watkins and end Choppy Taylor led a defense that limited Ocean to a Classicrecord minus-20 yards rushing. 1993 - Ocean 20, Monmouth 18 Highlights: Toms River South’s Chris Pagano blocked a 50-yard field goal attempt by Monmouth on the final play of the game as Ocean evened the series at eight apiece. 1997 - Ocean 15, Monmouth 13 Highlights: Second-half touchdowns by Brick’s Will Bell and Demetrius Dunn overcame a 7-0 halftime deficit to help Ocean tie the series at 10-10. 1998 - Monmouth 27, Ocean 13 Highlights: Red Bank running back Eric McCoo rushed for 105 yards and scored a Classic-record three touchdowns, one on a 60-yard punt return, to lift Monmouth to an 11-10 advantage in the series. Brick Memorial’s Shawn Murray had a Classic-record 98-yard interception return for a touchdown in the loss for Ocean. 1999 - Monmouth 21, Ocean 20 Highlights: Marlboro defensive lineman Dan Klecko blocked an extrapoint attempt with 27 seconds left in the game to give Monmouth the win after Ocean had scored on a touchdown pass by Toms River South’s Bill Rankin to teammate Torey Morris. 2000 - Monmouth 23, Ocean 0 Highlights: Long Branch’s David Rodriguez threw for touchdowns of 24 and 30 yards, and Raritan’s Glenn Nicholl threw for 100 yards in the first half as Monmouth put together the first three-game winning streak in the history of the game. 2001 - Ocean 6, Monmouth 3 Highlights: Toms River East’s Colin Gaynor booted field goals of 29 and 18 yards and Lakewood defensive end Thomas Carroll helped stop the Monmouth attack as Ocean stopped Monmouth’s three-game winning streak. 2002 - Ocean 10, Monmouth 7 (OT) Highlights: The first overtime game in the history of the series was decided when Lacey’s Carl Pennauchi kicked a 35-yard field goal on Ocean’s first overtime possession after a quarterback sneak by Middletown South’s Brendan Kennedy had tied the game in the fourth quarter. 2003 - Monmouth 8 - Ocean 2, (Game ended at halftime due to inclement weather) Highlights: With five seconds left in the first half, Matawan running back Tom Corley scored on a one-yard run and then Manalapan quarterback Mike Gaeta hit Raritan’s Mike Fabozzi for the two-point conversion to give Monmouth an 8-2 lead before the game abruptly ended. 2004 - Monmouth 28, Ocean 21 Highlights: Long Branch defensive end Mike Bland returned a fumble for an 80-yard touchdown and Keyport running back Ken Cattouse ran for a pair of touchdowns to give Monmouth the win. 2005 - Monmouth 19, Ocean 14 Highlights: Long Branch quarterback Maurice Turpin threw for a Classicrecord 240 yards and one touchdown while also running for a touchdown to give Monmouth its third straight win. 2006 - Ocean 7, Monmouth 7 (No OT, game ended in a tie) Highlights: Now known as the Shore 44 game, the first tie in the history of the series occurred when Manalapan’s Anthony Mujica scored to give Monmouth the lead and then Southern’s Josh Midili helped tie the game with a two-yard run in the fourth quarter. Both teams missed potentially game-winning field goals in the final minutes of regulation and the game ended in a tie. 2007 - Ocean 11, Monmouth 10 Highlights: Toms River East quarterback Jared Morris scored from four yards out on fourth down in the fourth quarter to help end Monmouth’s four-game unbeaten streak in the 30th game of the series. 2008 - Ocean 27, Monmouth 20 Highlights: Ocean won its second straight game as Brick wide receiver Kurt Loftus had a Classic-record 70-yard punt return for a touchdown for a 27-13 lead in the third quarter. Chris Castronuova, the first Jackson Liberty player to ever participate in the Classic, had a 20-yard touchdown catch in the loss for Ocean. Southern defensive back Logan Sheehan then made a game-sealing interception with 1:11 remaining. Starego earned offensive MVP honors for Ocean, while Southern linebacker Mason Fazekas was the defensive MVP with three hits for a loss and a blocked punt. Colts Neck running back Anthony Gargiulo ran for 51 yards and a touchdown to earn offensive MVP honors for Monmouth, and Matawan defensive end Nick Tomkins had multiple sacks to be named the defensive MVP. Manchester’s Shaquille Benjamin had a 71-yard touchdown return of a blocked field goal for Ocean, Donovan Catholic’s Vinny Grasso added a 26-yard fumble return for a score, and Brick’s Drew Scott had an interception return that set up Starego’s winning field goal.
Highlights: Marlboro running back Cameron Caorsi rushed for 168 yards and a touchdown to break the Gridiron Classic single-game rushing record and lead Monmouth County to victory, snapping Ocean County’s three-game winning streak. Caorsi ran for 92 yards on 14 carries in the first half and added 76 yards on 11 carries over the final two quarters to break the old mark of 161 yards set by legendary Freehold running back Joe “The Jet” Henderson in 1986. St. John Vianney quarterback Matt DeGennaro threw a 5-yard touchdown pass to Asbury Park running back Paul Reed and Freehold Township’s Tyler Schulman kicked a 29-yard field goal. Caorsi was selected as Monmouth County’s offensive MVP while Keyport defensive end Zack Frick was named Monmouth County’s defensive MVP with a sack, a tackle for loss and a fumble recovery. Red Bank Catholic defensive back Max Hazard also had a standout game with two interceptions, one of which led to Monmouth’s first touchdown. Brick quarterback Anthony Costanza tossed a 12-yard touchdown pass to Point Boro wide receiver Hayden Frey, then connected with Central running back Mike Bickford for the 2-point conversion to account for Ocean County’s points. Lakewood wide receiver Adi Palmer was the offensive MVP for Ocean County with six receptions for 68 yards and Lacey defensive back Chase Stephensen had a fumble recovery to be selected as the Ocean County defensive MVP.
2010 - Monmouth 12, Ocean 10 Highlights: A 42-yard touchdown pass from St. John Vianney’s Joe Carlucci to Long Branch wide receiver Ezra Kelly midway through the fourth quarter gave Monmouth County a comeback victory. Howell wideout Phil Adamo added a 14-yard touchdown catch from teammate Jimmy Ryan in the first quarter that was set up by a forced fumble by Middletown South defensive end Nick Bricker. Toms River South’s Rob Whitfield had an 83-yard kickoff return that set up a touchdown run by Toms River East’s Nico Steriti in the loss. Lacey defensive lineman Mike Stuppiello added three tackles for a loss and a sack for Ocean. 2011 - Ocean 6, Monmouth 3 Highlights: A 22-yard field goal by Lacey’s Jarrod Molzon snapped a 3-3 tie with 7:39 left in the game to send Ocean County to victory in the lowest-scoring Gridiron Classic since 2001. Lacey head coach Lou Vircillo picked up his third win as a head coach in the Gridiron Classic, second behind only fellow Hall of Famer Warren Wolf. Ocean’s defense held Monmouth to 105 total yards, and Lacey linebacker Brian Mykoliw had an interception that set up Molzon’s winning field goal. Toms River East punter Joey Clarizio was named Ocean’s defensive MVP, while Lacey quarterback Craig Cicardo earned offensive MVP honors. Keyport defensive tackle Greg Velasco won the defensive MVP for Monmouth, and Rumson-Fair Haven quarterback Mike Villapiano was named offensive MVP. 2012 - Monmouth 28, Ocean 7 Highlights: St. John Vianney quarterback Anthony Carlucci went 5for-6 for 91 yards and threw two touchdown passes to earn offensive MVP honors in Monmouth’s victory. Manalapan running back John Sieczkowski ran for 100 yards and a touchdown on 18 carries in the win, and Red Bank’s Tyheem Crawford and St. John Vianney’s Anthony Pante each had touchdown catches. Manasquan linebacker Kodie McNamara was the defensive MVP for Monmouth, which held Ocean to 111 total yards. Lacey defensive end Jordan Powell was Ocean’s defensive MVP with three sacks, and Brick quarterback Brandon Kieslor, who ran for a 2-yard touchdown, was Ocean’s offensive MVP. 2013 - Monmouth 19, Ocean 7 Highlights: Monmouth won its second straight Classic behind Colts Neck wide receiver Tim Vangelas, who earned offensive MVP honors with 6 catches for 78 yards and 2 touchdowns. Neptune quarterback Ajee Patterson went 6-for-9 passing for 65 yards and two touchdowns and also ran for 45 yards on four carries. Colts Neck quarterback Mike Campbell finished 8-for-15 for a game-high 120 yards passing and threw a touchdown pass to Vangelas. Neptune defensive end David Calderon earned defensive MVP honors for Monmouth with four sacks to lead an effort that limited Ocean County to 125 total yards. Brick Memorial quarterback Ryan Cieplenski earned offensive MVP honors for Ocean by throwing for 44 yards and the team's only touchdown, a 29yard strike to Point Beach's Andre Cochran. Brick defensive end Dan Watson was Ocean's defensive MVP with a pair of sacks.
2015 - Ocean 27, Monmouth 7 Highlights Ocean won its second straight over Monmouth with a balanced offense centered around a standout passing attack. Quarterbacks Carmen Sclafani (Brick), Joe DeMaio (Jackson Memorial) and Conor Davies (Lacey) each threw touchdown passes while Brick Memorial’s Karl Kumm kicked a pair of field goals despite not being the Mustangs kicker during the season. The Ocean County defense held Monmouth’s offense to just 161 total yards. Jackson Memorial’s Matt Castronuova was named Ocean County’s offensive MVP after catching five passes for 63 yards and two touchdowns. Toms River South defensive lineman Joe Odebode earned defensive MVP for Ocean County with a sack and a tackle for a loss. Rumson-Fair Haven running back Charlie Volker ran for 84 yards on 14 carries, had one catch for 12 yards and scored his teams’s only touchdown on his way to being selected as Monmouth County’s offensive MVP. Holmdel linebacker Frank Condito was the Monmouth defensive MVP. Kumm kicked field goals of 25 and 43 yards and also caught a 45-yard touchdown pass. 2016 – Ocean 14, Monmouth 7 Highlights: A ferocious defensive effort led Ocean County to its record-tying third straight win in the all-time series, holding Monmouth County to minus-2 rushing yards and 158 yards overall. Point Boro’s Noah Husak threw a 54-yard touchdown pass to Brick’s Matt Schleifer and Central’s Mike Miserendino tossed a 4-yard touchdown pass to Southern’s Pat Walker. Middletown South’s Matt Mosquera threw an 18-yard touchdown pass to Raritan’s Nick Pasquin for Monmouth’s score. Jackson Memorial defensive end Tyler Towns was named Ocean County’s defensive MVP thanks to a crucial stop on a fourth-and-1 play early in the fourth quarter that preserved Ocean County’s 7-0 lead. Towns also had a batted pass that resulted in an interception by Brick Memorial defensive lineman Chris Hayes. Miserendino was selected as Ocean County’s offensive MVP for leading the nine-play, 86-yard drive that resulted in his touchdown pass to Walker with 8:30 to play in the game. Miserendino also had a game-high 48 yards rushing. Brick defensive lineman Jordan Keefe added a fumble recovery and Barnegat linebacker Josh Bowen blocked a field goal attempt. Middletown North defensive lineman Matt Dombrowski had a fumble recovery that led to Monmouth’s touchdown and was selected as their defensive MVP. Pasquin was named offensive MVP with his touchdown reception. Freehold quarterback Jake Curry had a game high 110 yards on 9 of 13 passing. Freehold’s Todd Burger also had a fumble recovery and Ocean’s Greyson Stoothoff had an interception.
2018 – Monmouth 28, Ocean 14 Highlights: Freehold quarterback Ashante Worthy concluded his record-breaking career by accounting for 155 total yards and two touchdowns en route to being selected as the game’s Most Valuable Player as Monmouth County won its second straight Gridiron Classic to extend its lead in the all-time series. Worthy ran for a team-high 94 yards and a 16-yard touchdown on 10 carries and threw for 61 yards and a touchdown, connecting with Red Bank Catholic wide receiver Brandon Lombana on a 15-yard screen pass. Red Bank Catholic running back Zack Bair added 51 yards rushing and a touchdown and Marlboro wide receiver Justin Marcus caught three passes for 26 yards, including a 5-yard touchdown reception from Long Branch quarterback Juwan Wilkins. Monmouth County opened a 21-0 halftime lead and stretched its advantage to 28-0 in the third quarter to put the game away. Long Branch’s Kevin Porch was selected as Monmouth County’s defensive MVP thanks to a key pass breakup in the first quarter and a timely recovery of a squib kick in the second half. Ocean County prevented the shutout when Lacey running back Jason Giresi scored on a 6-yard run early in the fourth quarter, which was set up by a 41-yard run by Manchester running back Jalen Glenn. Point Boro quarterback James Fara ran for a game-high 100 yards on 14 carries while Glenn ran for 79 yards and a touchdown and caught three passes for 19 yards to be selected as Ocean County’s offensive MVP. Jackson Liberty’s Nick Johnson was selected as Ocean County’s defensive MVP with two tackles for loss.

lone at the top is the Shore Sports Network Team of the Year: Red Bank Catholic. RBC won the NJSIAA Non-Public Group 3 state title and finished as the Shore Conference’s only undefeated team. The Caseys were our No. 1 team in August and remained in their perch the entire way, which is a testament to their talent and focus. No. 2 Mater Dei Prep advanced to its third straight state final and suffered its only conference loss of the season in the aforementioned Non-Public Group 3 championship game. Long Branch won back-to-back sectional titles for the first time in program history and won a program-record 12 games to finish at No. 3, while Rumson-Fair Haven won its fifth championship in six years to finish at No. 4. Brick, which reached the Central Jersey Group 4 championship game, rounds out the top 5. The rest of the Top 10 can be found below. Congratulations to all the teams who won division and state championships in 2018.
The Seraphs turned in another outstanding year with their only in-state blemish coming in the Non-Public Group 3 final when they fell to No. 1 Red Bank Catholic, 14-10. Mater Dei won its third straight division title by going undefeated in the Patriot Division and reached its third straight state final. The Seraphs defeated No. 8, Manasquan, 41-0, in a nondivisional game and took down North Jersey power DePaul, 28-23, in the Non-Public Group 3 semifinals. They had the No. 1 scoring offense in the Shore at 36.8 points per game and were sixth in scoring defense at 11.1 points per game. Junior running back Malik Ingram was selected as the Patriot Division Offensive Player of the Year and senior defensive lineman Izaiah Henderson was named the Patriot Division Defensive Player of the Year. Several standouts will move on through graduation, including the Boston College-bound duo of Henderson and linebacker Shittah Sillah, linebacker Russell Ferrisi, quarterback Rob McCoy, wide receiver Isaiah Alston and offensive lineman Nolan Aloia. Ingram leads a very good group of returners, however, including wide receiver/defensive back Isaiah Noguera, wide receiver/defensive back Clarence Lewis, defensive back Tahaj Parland, defensive end Dominick Giudice and defensive tackle Amir Coleman.
Long Branch (12-1) The Green Wave had arguably the best season in program history by repeating as Central Jersey Group 4 champions, winning the Central/South Group 4 Bowl Game and finishing with a program single-season record 12 wins. Long Branch defeated No. 5 Brick, 21-14, to win its second straight sectional title and then capped the season with a 20-17 comeback win over Shawnee in the bowl game. The Green Wave also had wins over No. 7 Red Bank and No. 10 Wall and their only defeat came to No. 1 Red Bank Catholic. Long Branch’s offense finished No. 4 in the Shore at 33.5 points per game while its defense was fifth at 10.3 points per game with five shutouts. Junior running back Jermaine Corbett led the state in rushing with 2,021 yards and had a Shore-best 31 total touchdowns, and was selected as the Shore Sports Network Offensive Player of the Year. Senior linebacker Luke Arnold was selected as a Freedom Division CoDefensive Player of the Year. An all-time senior class will exit the program but there will be plenty of talent returning in 2019 with Corbett, linebacker Jah’Kwan Gordon, linebacker Jayson Glasper, center Tracey Taylor and wide receiver Jayon Farrar leading the way.

2018 Final Shore Sports Network Top I0 Red Bank Catholic (10-0) The Caseys defeated No. 2 Mater Dei Prep, 14-10, to capture the NJSIAA Non-Public Group 3 state title and finish as the topranked team in the Shore. RBC went wire-to-wire as the No. 1 team, claimed its second state title in five years and finished undefeated for the first time since 1960. Along the way, the Caseys had five wins over ranked opponents, including victories over No. 3 Long Branch and No. 4 Rumson-Fair Haven, both of which won NJSIAA sectional titles and bowl games. In addition to the win over Mater Dei, RBC also defeated No. 7 Red Bank and beat St. John Vianney in the season-opener when the Lancers were ranked No. 2. The Caseys had the No. 3 scoring offense in the Shore at 33.7 points per game and the No. 2 scoring defense at 10 points per game. Boston Collegebound senior quarterback Steve Lubischer was selected as the Freedom Division Offensive Player of the Year and was named the Shore Sports Network Most Valuable Player. Senior defensive back Jaden Key was selected as a Freedom Division Co-Defensive Player of the Year and head coach Frank Edgerly was named the Freedom Division Coach of the Year. The Caseys will lose an exceptional senior class to graduation but have several standouts returning including Notre Dame-bound tight end Kevin Bauman, Boston College-bound linebacker Charlie Gordinier., running back Billy Guidetti, wide receiver Sean Rossback, running back Kevin Degnan and defensive lineman Jake Louro.

The Bulldogs’ dynasty rolled on in 2018 as Rumson won its fifth sectional title in the last six seasons and also captured the Central/South Group 3 Bowl Game trophy. Rumson took down undefeated Somerville, 4235, to win the Central Jersey Group 3 championship – its sixth overall – before defeating Woodrow Wilson, 26-18, in its bowl game. The Bulldogs defeated No. 5 Brick in the regular season on their way to the Colonial Division title and defeated No. 7 Red Bank in the Central Jersey Group 3 semifinals. Rumson had the No. 7 scoring offense in the Shore at 29.9 points per game and was also No. 7 in scoring defense at 11.5 points per game. RFH swept the Colonial Division awards as senior running back Alex Maldjian was selected as the Offensive Player of the Year, senior linebacker Keegan Woods was selected as the Co-Defensive Player of the Year and head coach Jerry Schulte was named Coach of the Year. Woods, who led the state with 178 tackles, was also selected as the Shore Sports Network Defensive Player of the year. A plethora of standouts will move on via graduation but Rumson has proven it can withstand such losses. Quarterback Collin Coles, running backs Peter Crowley and Johnny Volker, wide receiver Patrick Jamin, defensive backs Drew Frankel and Ryan Ruane, defensive lineman Von Factor and linebacker Gordon Forsyth will anchor the 2019 squad.
Brick (8-3) The Dragons came up just short in their quest for a sectional championship when they fell to No. 3 Long Branch, 21-14 in the Central Jersey Group 4 championship game. The Dragons’ signature win was a 4214 victory over No. 6 Middletown South in the Central Jersey Group 4 semifinals. They also had a pair of wins over Constitution Division champion Jackson Memorial. Brick had the No. 10 scoring offense in the Shore at 25.4 points per game and the No. 10 scoring defense at 12.3 points per game. Senior linebacker Richie Tallmadge was selected as the Colonial Division Co-Defensive Player of the Year. Almost all of Brick’s starters and top contributors were seniors, so many new faces will be taking over next season. Quarterback Anthony Prato, lineman John Costanza, wide receiver Val Grigorian and running back/linebacker Joe Armooh lead the group of returners.

Middletown South (8-3) The Eagles won the American Division title and reached the Central Jersey Group 4 semifinals to finish No. 6 in the Shore. Middletown South had dramatic wins over Manalapan (17-14) and Toms River North (14-13) to claim the division title and delivered its signature win by taking down No. 4 Rumson-Fair Haven, 14-7, in the final week of the regular season. Middletown South had the No. 17 offense in the Shore at 21.4 points per game and the No. 12 scoring defense at 15.3 points per game. Senior quarterback Trevor Brey was selected as the American Division Co-Offensive Player of the Year, senior linebacker Matt Tardy was selected as the American Division Defensive Player of the Year and head coach Steve Antonucci was named American Division Coach of the Year. Standouts such as Brey, Tardy, running back Jamie Petrillo, kicker Chris Kaldrovics, running back/linebacker Ken McCarthy, linebacker Dylan Walling and offensive lineman Brady Smith will graduate, but there is a good nucleus returning led by running back/defensive lineman Vinny Condito, running back/defensive back Chris Lotito and wide receiver/defensive back Matt Krellin.
Red Bank (7-3) Following a 2-8 season in 2017, the Bucs turned it around this year to win seven games and reach the Central Jersey Group 3 semifinals. Red Bank’s signature win was a 28-26 victory over No. 9 Holmdel in Week 2 on a touchdown catch by Nigel Mitchell with 10 seconds left. The Bucs had the No. 15 offense in the Shore at 22.1 points per game, led by the big-play tandem of Mitchell and junior running back Makai Mickens, the latter of whom became Red Bank’s first 1,000-yard rusher since 2003. Red Bank’s defense also finished the season No. 15 at 16.8 points per game with one shutout. The Bucs’ three losses were to No. 1 Red Bank Catholic, No. 3 Rumson-Fair Haven and No. 4 Long Branch. Mitchell, Mickens, senior defensive tackle Ka’Shaun Turner, senior offensive lineman Colin Chato and

sophomore wide receiver/defensive back Nick Ferrogine were selected to the Freedom Division All-Division team. Mickens, Ferrogine, quarterback Jack Chamberlain and tight end/linebacker Kyle Weisman lead the cast of returners in 2019.
Manasquan (8-3) The Warriors turned in another solid season by winning eight games and advancing to the Central Jersey Group 2 championship game. However, Manasquan fell to Hillside, which was undefeated at the time, to thwart its quest for a 13th sectional title. The Warriors won the Liberty Division title and their only defeats in conference came to No. 2 Mater Dei Prep and No. 10 Wall. Manasquan finished with the No. 13 offense in the Shore at 23.3 points per game and the No. 16 defense at 17.6 points per game. Senior running back Canyon Birch was selected as the Liberty Division’s Offensive Player of the Year, senior defensive back James Pendergist was selected as a CoDefensive Player of the Year and Jay Price was named division Coach of the Year. Offensive linemen Art Foreman and Alec Wells, defensive end Dylan D’Anton and fullback/defensive back Rashid Tuddles were also selected to the All-Division team. Manasquan was a senior-heavy team so many starting spots will be up for grabs in 2019. Linebackers Tyler Callahan and Shayne Leddy, wide receiver John Foreman, defensive back Christian Masonius, offensive lineman/linebacker Charlie Sawitsky and lineman Garrett Terlizzi lead the group of returners for next season.
Holmdel (8-2) It was a triumphant year for the Hornets, who had their best season in over a decade with one of the most complete teams in the Shore. Holmdel won the National Division title, its first division title since 2007, and also won a playoff game for the first time since 2007. The Hornets reached the Central Jersey Group 3 semifinals and held a halftime lead against thenundefeated Somerville before falling, 31-20, to a team that was
ranked in the top 10 in New Jersey. The Hornets’ only other loss came to No. 7 Red Bank, 28-26 in the closing seconds of the game. Holmdel had the No. 1 scoring defense in the Shore allowing just 7.9 points per game and recording five shutouts. The Hornets offense finished No. 2 in the Shore at 34.1 points per game. Head coach Jeff Rainess was selected as the Shore Sports Network Coach of the Year and also named the National Division Coach of the Year. Senior running back Dean Gallo was named the division Offensive Player of the Year and senior defensive back Mack Byrne was the division Defensive Player of the Year. The Hornets had a total of 11 All-Division players. Holmdel had a huge senior contingent so the challenge will be to buoy this year’s success and keep the program moving in the right direction next year. Running backs Cameron LaMountain and Tom Ammirati, linebacker Nick Bauman, safety Evan Jennings and tight end Bob Eknoian lead the cast of returners for 2019.
Wall (6-3) Deciding on which team to rank in the 10th and final spot was the most difficult part about compiling the final rankings. Several teams were in the mix, but we settled on Wall because it had the most significant win of those teams being considered: an 18-7 victory over No. 8 Manasquan on Thanksgiving. The Crimson Knights losses were to Jackson Memorial (12-6 in overtime), No. 4 Long Branch and Timber Creek in the South Jersey Group 3 playoffs. Wall had the No. 11 offense in the Shore at 24.6 points per game and the No. 8 defense at 11.8 points per game. Senior quarterback Dylan Richey was selected as the Constitution Division Offensive Player of the Year and was one of six Wall players on the All-Division team. While the Crimson Knights will graduate standouts like Richey, tight end/linebacker Tanner Powers, offensive linemen Brady Scott and Joe Fardella, long snapper/linebacker Joe Shimko, defensive back Kamaal Cofer and defensive lineman Connor Molloy, they bring several starters. Quarterback/ eceiver/linebacker Logan Peters, running backs Casey Larkin and Matt DeSarno, linebacker Charlie Sasso, wide receiver/defensive back Mike Galos and lineman Ian Ackerman lead the core for 2019.
