ALLAH THE NAME TO BEGIN WITH THE MOST BENEFICIENT THE MOST MERCIFUL

THE PHYSIOTHERAPIST 2014-15

DEDICATED TO MRS. JUDITH SHAHEEN MIAN THE FOUNDER SCHOOL OF PHYSIOTHERAPY KEMU MHL

The School of Physiotherapy is deeply indebted to its founder “Mrs. Judith Shaheen Mian” who with her devotion succeeded in realizing her dream of establishing a pioneer institute of physiotherapy in West Pakistan. She was the Chartered Physiotherapist from United Kingdom appointed as 1st Class Gazette Officer and posted at Mayo Hospital Lahore. She was among those only Five Physiotherapists who were selected by Public Service Commission of West Pakistan in 1962. She served zealously and inspired her patients with her clinical skills. She was successful in getting PC-1 approval from Government for the establishment of the institute in 1973 which was equipped with new building, staff and latest instruments in 1977. The institute was awaiting affiliation with university for degree awarding to the students. Unfortunately due to her husband’s death, Mrs. Mian had to leave the post for personal reasons. Mr. Khalid Samdani (Late) became Head of Department of Physiotherapy in 1980 and accomplished the task of affiliation and School was inaugurated in 1983. The services of Mrs. Judith for this institute will always be remembered and regarded with high esteem. Therefore the magazine team credits her with gratitude and reverence and dedicates this publication to her selfless services for School of Physiotherapy, KEMU, MHL.

On his return to home, Maysarah reported to Khadijah all that had taken place on the trip to Syria. She was deeply moved and impressed with the personification of Muhammad (PBUH). She intended to send But how could she express her thoughts to him? She already rejected several proposals of marriage from men belonging to some of the noblest families of the Quraysh. How would her tribe react? What would her family say? And what was more, would her proposal be acceptable to this young, yet unmarried man of the tribe of Quraysh? As she pondered over these questions and debated within herself, One night she had a dream "A shining sun descended from the heavens into her courtyard, and started radiating her home". When she woke up she went for the interpretation of this wonderful dream to her cousin, Waraqah bin Nawfal, a blind man noted for his skill in interpreting dreams, and for his depth of knowledge, particularly of the Torah and the Injil. When he heard her dream, he gave a serene smile, and told her not to worry, as this dream was very promising. The glorious sun she saw descending into her courtyard indicated that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) whose advent had been predicted in the Torah and the Injil was to grace her home and she would gain from his presence in her life. After this meeting with Waraqah she became stronger in her desire to marry Muhammad (PBUH). She sent one of her very close friends, Nafisah bint Manbah with to ask what Muhammad PBUH) thought. Knowing her identity Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) expressed his willingness. On hearing the good tidings Khadijah' was overjoyed. The Prophet (PBUH) was then twenty-five years of age and Khadijah was forty years old. (According to one tradition, she was twenty-eight). The two uncles of the Prophet (PBUH) Hamzah and Abu Talib approached her uncle, 'Umar bin Asad, with the formal proposal. It was accepted and the two families began preparing for the wedding. Halimah As-Sa'diyyah who nursed the Prophet in his infancy was specially invited for the wedding and traveled to Makkah from her village. When she left after the festivities, Khadijah presented her with household goods, a camel and forty goats as an expression of gratitude to the lady who had taken such good care of Muhammad (PBUH) in his infancy. The dream came true and Khadjia was honorablly wedded to Prophet Muhammad (PBUH). Khadijah was very blessed in the marriage, and had six children. First two sons, Qasim and 'Abdullah; then followed the daughters, Zaynab, Ruqayyah, Umm Kulthum and Fatimah. And it became a very happy, peaceful and content household. Narrated Abu Hurairah: Jibril (Gabriel) came to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and said: "O Allah's Messenger! This is Khadijah, coming to you with a dish having meat soup (or some food or drink). When she reaches you, greet her on behalf of her Lord (Allah) and on my behalf, and give her the glad tidings of having a palace made of Qasab in Paradise, wherein there will be neither any noise nor any toil, (fatigue, trouble, etc.)." “And those who believe, and those do good works are the best of created beings” (AL – Qur’an) Small deeds, done are better, than great deeds, planned. It shows our love to Humanity. Islam taught us to carry-out good deeds, no matter how small they are. By doing one simple act, you can open the door of happiness for yourself and other people around you. A'isha said that ALLAH’s Messenger ‫ﷺ‬ said: "The deeds most loved by ALLAH (are those) done regularly, even if they are small." (Bukhari, Muslim) ALLAH’s Messenger Muhammad ‫ﷺ‬told us that no virtue is too small. Islam promises a huge reward for seemingly small act. ALLAH’s Messenger ‫ﷺ‬said: “Do not disdain any good deed, even your meeting with your brother with a cheerful face”. (Muslim, Book 32, Hadith 6359)

Our religion stimulates to carry out small deeds like removing a harmful object from road, bringing happiness to a fellow muslim, relieving him of his distress, paying off his debt, staving off hunger from him. You can even pass a sweet smile to your fellows, these good deeds erase our bad deeds. Our little good acts bring satisfaction and happiness to us our deeds are like our monuments. Little deeds of kindness, Little deeds of Love Make this world an Eden, Like the Heaven above (Julia A. Carney) Your good deed is an act of Love. If you do good, your good deeds will multiply. If you do bad, you will face the consequences. Always choose the former. Living a good life is a blessing indeed.

Quill Once upon a time there was a King, known of his mysterious melancholy among his subjects. He lived in a lavish palace. Fortunes of all kind were in abundance. Rivers of sweet water flowed through the gardens. Curtain robes of palace were all made of gold. Subservience reigned all over the kingdom. But the King was unhappy. No matter whose and how much brilliant, the shows were set, none could bring a even a sign of smile on kings face. One of the courtiers suggested that a festival must be arranged in which delegates of comedians and conjurers should be called from all over the kingdom to bring smile on the face of King. The King approved the advice and declared the prize of gold and jewels equal to the weight of the ten men for one who may win the heart of King and make him smile and those who would fail were to be ripped of all their precious belongings.

First year, come here”, this phrase, simple it may seem to you, is scary enough to frighten any new comer. First year is the class where one is exposed to a whole new world and you feel yourself stuck on the very first step of this never-ending ladder (it’s end is probably death if I’m not wrong), new class, new fellows, new ways of studying, new campus and especially, you are regarded as new in this old historical institution and you are lost in all the newness imparted to you. First day, wearing new, clean, pure white overall felt awesome, this “Good Feeling” quickly buries itself when we are made to wear overall inside out and are taught our first lesson “never overestimate yourself, the bigger giants are already present”. We prepared to start ourselves on first gear as we felt we have miraculously achieved a non-achievable task by entering into Pakistan’s most prestigious institute and needed to take a rest but our departments train us to work on fourth gear. Sub-stages, tests and viva are granted as welcome note and we are left to wonder what lies ahead. First sub-stage seems like a monster which could not be knocked down, cramming each and every word of B.D Chaurasia and KLM including distance in centimeters, one structure is from other tiny structure. Everyone is exhausted and scared and yes, sharpened his theta weapon to top sub-stage, the weapon which was used excessively during FSC but they forgot unfortu-

nately that this now KEMU where everyone is destined to drown, at least once and hardly passing the sub-stage means you have topped it. There are few sensible folks who understand it soon and are thus freed from the anxiety and depression others suffer throughout the session. First two months are the hardest, a first year student feels himself being constantly targeted by arrows of department’s warnings, threats, tests and bullets of senior’s ragging, their horrifying description of life at KEMU(never ever fall prey to these stories, otherwise you won’t survive a day). Parents constant inquiries “beta, kaisay din guzar rahay hain”, cousin’s irritating questions “janab, class me kis position par a rahay ho”, depressors by your friends “main ne raat ko Guytoon kay 2 chapters kar liye” the time when you put stress on your poor mind to remember you have only read “Guyton died in a tragic automobile accident in 2003” written in preface by some, ‘people-who-can-do-everything’ constant posts about achievements here and there, staff’s “chai pani” demands, so much so that you start every week making days which could hopefully turn into holiday if so-and-so event occurs and yes, last but on the least when you fight over the “cadaver” for your turn to observe it.

THE PHYSIOTHERAPIST 2014-15

It takes complete one year and lots of understanding and patience and use of risorius and zygomaticus muscles to counter these attacks by the weapon of SMILE. Whatever happens, just smile and problem solved! Everything’s new in first year and it is an experience worth enjoying. One explores a new world, just to mention a few: it is a duty of every first year to take a tour of the mayo hospital, each and every department, take pictures of historical sites, especially Patiala block and its domes which look like a palace to some passionate new first years, roof of physiotherapy department, view from top of ophthalmology department. You make new friends, first time in life, you meet people very similar to you, everyone thinks that he or she knows everything and summing it up everyone knows everything and thus a long debate is ignited which continues till late at night only to be extin-

guished when they sleep to get up early, to maintain the attendance….. :P Then there also happened different events. Which we have enjoyed much during the first year…. Annual Dinner, Laptop distribution ceremony, Sports Week, PAKISTAB day, IQBAL day and also an awesome Welcome Party by our adjacent seniors. “Peeno siyanni day” was the best day of sports week. Cricket Tournament was won by our class cricket team. In football, we are runner-ups. As a tradition we warmly welcomed our juniors. Yeah Fooling … :p (the new 1st Year). Then a nightmare, Prof examination happened and despite of all fears, Al Hamdulillah passed my Prof examination and got promoted to 2nd Year …. Seems to be a new adventure.

MAHAM JAVAID |1ST YR DPT Youth comprises of best minds who are passionate about fuelling positive change. And formative period of student life should be utilized for all round balanced development of his personality. Political experience during this period will prepare him to face the challenges better and enable him to succeed in life. Moreover, politics cannot be divorced from student’s life as they are exposed to all the media like press, television, cinema etc. History is filled with examples of students playing a vital role in fighting against social injustice and exploitation. Student and youth power brought about a change in “Jessica lal case”. It was youth power only which forced Indian jurisdiction to take action. Their power is so great that they could go against the people’s verdict. Where politicians fail, they succeed easily. If students are kept aloof from politics. The country would not find any leader from future generations. Minimum age for voting has now been reduced to 18 years. Voting is not only the basic right of an individual but also a step forward invested in the future of his homeland. Therefore, it is neither realistic nor too far to expect students who are generally in this age group to shun politics.

A

bout 67 years ago, on 14th August 1947 Pakistan and India became independent states. The great movement left its marks on history by a ghastly slaughter of half a million people. The concept of Two Nations was the real motive behind this movement. Muslim ideology, cultures and customs are altogether different from Hindus. Although, Muslims and Hindus lived under one state for too long. They served one another with sincerity but when it comes to sovereignty of Islam there is nothing that a Muslim can not do to protect it. Millions of Muslims left their homes, lands, businesses and properties and migrated to Pakistan. That day the eyes of sky witnessed one of the great migrations of history. People of sub-continent put their belief in one man, Muhammad Ali Jinnah. A very less number of families got lucky to cross the border without losing their lives. Analysts from all over the world were agreed on the point that Pakistan would not survive on its own in such vulnerable conditions. India sent its arm forces in Kashmir to

start a war with Pakistan in those crucial times, but Pakistanis or more precisely Muslims held hands with each other and Pakistan grew stronger and stronger. During the era of General Ayub Khan, India attacked Pakistan on September 6th in 1965. It was the day of the awakening for every Pakistani. India not only attacked their homeland but also challenged a very Muslim in each Pakistani. There was an announcement going on-air on Radio Pakistan the night before the attack that India will strike Pakistan in the coming days. People were advised to stay in open fields to minimize casualties. People were told to turn off lights and dig deep drenches to hide in during times of attack. But the reactions of people were completely opposite. Despite of hiding and take cover they got up on their roofs and started challenging Indian jet fighters. Females got themselves busy in hospitals serving the wounded or injured soldiers.

THE PHYSIOTHERAPIST 2014-15

Apart from that there was an overall attitude of Jihad among every Muslim. As ALLAH said in Quran various times, when a man gets ready to sacrifice himself in the way of Allah, he surely gets help from Allah. There were many incidents happened in 1965 war which needs explanation. No mind can explain it but a heart full of belief in Allah and all His powers can understand. Famous writer, Mumtaz Mufti wrote in his different books about the incidents of 1965 war. After the war, Indian soldiers said, ‘Army with swords in hands gave us immense losses. Some kind of light was emerging from their swords.’ Another prisoner who was an Indian pilot told that in Multan, he saw three old saints busy in catching bombs and throwing them away.’ A prisoner from Sialkot asked, ‘Who were those horse riders dressed in red? They confused Indian Army badly.’

“(Remember) when your Lord inspired to Angels, ‘I am with you, so strengthen those who believe. I will cast terror into the hearts of those who disbelieved, so strike (them) upon the necks and strike them from every fingertip.’ SurahAl-Anfal: 12 “ Jang newspaper received a letter right from Madina Munawara. It was stated that two people in Madina Munawara saw a same dream on the same day when Lahore has been attacked. They saw Holy Prophet Hazrat Muhammad (S.A.W) in their dream riding on his horse. They humbly asked, ‘Holy Prophet (S.A.W) where are you going so quickly?’ Holy Prophet (S.A.W) gently replied, ’Going on Jihad in pakistan.’ Famous physician, Hakeem Nayyar Wasti was also in Madina Munawara during war of 1965. He was told by a saint that all the martyrs of Islam were gone to Pakistan in the companionship of shuhuda-e-Badr. Indian General Kareipa’s son who was a pilot, he entangled during war. He told in his remarks that he was ordered to destroy River Ravi Bridge. He was told that there is only one bridge over

Ravi River. But when he got there he saw six bridges instead of one. Another imprisoned pilot told that there was a time when the weather was clear and all situations were going in favor of Indians but then suddenly a heavy dense cloud jumped out of nowhere and covered the whole city.

“(Remember) when you asked help of your Lord, and He answered you, ‘Indeed, I will reinforce you with a thousand from the angels, following one another.’ Surah Al-Anfal: 09”

After the war many journalist went to different battlefields, they found out that all the arenas where Indian army seized fire, they did it because of misunderstanding. They were more in number than Pakistani soldiers but Indian army felt that Pakistan Army seemed to be more in numbers.

“(Remember, O Muhammad) when Allah showed them to you in your dreams as few, and if He had shown them to you as many, you (believers) would have lost courage.” Surah AlAnfal: 43

Allah said in Quran several times that He would never change a favor to people that He had bestowed upon them until they change what is within themselves. Ghazwah-e-badr was not one historical event, but whenever it comes to non-Muslims being a threat to Islam there is always a war of Badr. All what is needed, is to develop an passion of Jihad what Shuhuda-e-Badr once had. No doubt, help of Allah will come through convincing or nonconvincing modes. Insha Allah.

“O Prophet, sufficient for you is Allah and for whoever follows you of the believers.” Surah Al-Anfal: 64.

There are only two states in the world that came into being on basis of a true ideology, one is the state of Madina and the other is Pakistan. Allah has been protecting this land since last 67 years and He will protect it till hereafter. Insha Allah. Long live Pakistan.

Jang newspaper received a letter right from Madina Munawara. It was stated that two people in Madina Munawara saw a same dream on the same day when Lahore has been attacked.

Life is full of mysterious patterns, chains and shackles starting from birth till death and even since the in caption of the all its destruction. As when a baby is born, he is free from all laws, morals, ethics, disciplines and bonds of day to day life. But with the passage of time, he must have to follow them all, even abhorring them, and later in life even has to preach and enforce them on others. Though a few chains like fraternity, paternity, matrimony, laws of state etc are inevitable and beauty of the universe yet others like caste, color, creed, sects, ethnicity and nationality are fatal to humanity. The religious principles which are common in every religion must be followed as their absence or negligence is apocalyptical. While those which are product of human evolution should be gauged before implementation; because according to a book of human philosophy, “Rationalism”, man is greedy and selfish by nature, hence, chains made by him can be faulty and destructive. World politics reveals the very same human nature in contemporary affairs like Israel-Palestine, USA in Iraq, Afghanistan, Syria, Egypt etc. But UNO is still silent while its charter is being tarnished. Sectarianism has made not even our country but the whole Muslim world weak, crippled and vulnerable to attacks from outside. Although human race on this planet is bound in unseen chains yet among those, a few are necessary and vital, so they must be prevailed and enforced. While others are marring the beauty of the universe; hence they must be eliminated through patience, education and love for humanity.

Someone asked me, “Can we replace exercise with medicine?” Yes, “Exercise is Medicine”…but it is So Much More! Yes, exercise is like medicine in so many ways, Exercise is prescribed, in a specific dosage and formulation to each individual patient diagnosed with a disease. The prescription must be very specific regarding exercise modality, intensity, frequency, and duration. Clearly, it is not enough to have providers tell patients “you should exercise for your disease” without giving them these specifics. It would be equivalent to telling a patient to “just take some pills”--and no provider would do that! Clearly, there is much work to be done in this area and fortunately, there are many great minds focused on this task. Exercise can be as effective as many frequently prescribed drugs in treating some of the leading causes of death, according to a new report. The study raises important questions about whether our health care system focuses too much on medications and too little on activity to combat physical ailments. Comparative effectiveness studies are a staple of science, of course, especially in pharmaceutical research. Scientists often track how well one drug treats a condition compared with the outcome if the use a different drug. But few studies have directly compared drugs with exercise, and even fewer have compared outcomes in terms of mortality or whether the intervention significantly lessens the chance that someone with a disease will die from it, despite treatment. A research on comprehensive comparison of the effectiveness of drugs and exercise in lessening mortality among people who had been diagnosed with one of four diseases: heart disease, chronic heart failure, stroke or diabetes was carried out at university of Stanford. They chose these particular conditions because those were the only ones for which they could find studies that had examined whatever exercise lessened the risk of death among patient with disease. The available data was relatively small but still, the numbers were large enough that they could create

an elaborate network of cross-references, comparing the outcomes when people received certain drugs, followed exercise regimes or, occasionally, both. The exercise routines, typically part of rehabilitation programs, usually involved walking or other aerobic routines but sometimes consisted of weight training or other exercise. The researchers compared mortality risks for people following any of the treatment options. The results consistently showed that drugs and exercise produced almost exactly the same results. People with heart disease, for instance, who exercised but did not use commonly prescribed medications, including stains, angiotensin-converting-enzyme inhibitors or antiplatelet drugs, had the same risk of dying from --- or surviving --- heart disease as patients taking those drugs. Similarly, people with diabetes who exercised had the same relative risk of dying from the condition as those taking the most commonly prescribed drugs. Or as the researchers wrote in statistics-speak, “When compared head to

head in network meta-analyses, all interventions were not different beyond chance.”

On the other hand, people who once had suffered a stroke had significantly less risk of dying from that condition if they used medications. Only in chronic heart failure were drugs noticeably more effective than exercise. Diabetics staved off mortality better than did exercise. Overall results suggested that exercise can be quite potent in treating heart disease and the other conditions, equaling the lifesaving benefits available form most of the commonly prescribed drugs. However more research is to be done on this aspect as current roles of exercise and physical activity are preventative. No physician would prescribe a medicine to a patient who is currently healthy. However, we do need to encourage all people to be physically active on a regular basis. It is more than preventing disease or rehabilitating from disease, but staying healthy.

The world is the place of residence of various antonyms. Where there is virtue, there is evil too. If there is tyranny, there is freedom as well. With hatred, there is love also. Man has come in this world to help his fellow beings. Human beings are the best and wisest creation of Allah. Continuous acts of kindness and virtue make the life of a man easy, comfortable and beneficial for others like the life of the flowers in the life of man. Our lives should be like flowers that can bring happiness and smile on the face of every person. The Holy Qur’an is full of verses with practical manifestations of Allah’s love for His creation and of believer’s love for God. In Islam, faith is practical not just an emotion. It has to be expressed practically in deeds as well as verbally in prayers. Jeffrey Lang addressed in his book: “Since God is the perfection of the virtues we should acquire, the more we grow in them, the greater our ability to get closer to him. The more we grow in the mercy, the greater our ability to experience God’s infinite mercy. The more we develop compassion, the greater our ability becomes to know God’s infinite compassion. The same could be said of love”. Mansur-al-Hallaj was a Persian mystic, revolutionary writer. He stated in his book: “if you do not recognize God, at least recognize His signs; I am the creative truth. ‘Ann-al-Hqq’ because through the truth, I am the eternal truth”.

According to him, “love means to stand next to the Beloved renouncing oneself entirely and transforming oneself in accordance to Him”. He spoke of God as his “Beloved, Friend” “You” and felt his only self was God, to the pint that he could not even remember his own name. Love is the same thing that our National poet Allama Iqbal preached. According to him, Ishq or love stands for all that is good in this world and the next while its opposite Aql or wisdom stands all that is bad and sinful. He says: “Dayar e Ishq me apna maqam paida kar Naya zamana naye subuh sham paida kar” All things that I have mentioned teach us that we should not think individually about ourselves but we should think about other human beings. We should love the mankind. It is very heartbreaking to say that today love in our world is lost somewhere in the atmosphere of hate and destruction. We see fear on the face of every person. Suicide bombing is more of a common news, innocent people die every day. People feel insecure with their fellows for their lives. This is because of the hate of the people for each other. I personally say that hate can destroy our lives but love can make our live. A person without love is without a soul. “Love is the essence of Life” (Latin Proverb). It is our responsibility to preach love and peace in Pakistan and make this world a place of love, which will make far better than it already is.

`M. SHERAZ | 5TH YR DPT Students are the currency of an institute not only in terms of finance but also in form of human resource. They are the representatives of the academic culture of the college. They are the ambassadors of glorious traditions transferred to them from their alumni. Students are the basic unit of attention in an institute which is focused and trained under supervision of expert and professional teachers. A student-university relationship is as integral as student-teacher relationship. It is observed however now-a-days that this student-university relationship is valued only monetarily. Irrespective to standard of education imparted to them, fair play in exams and without monitoring of student activities. Resultantly, some students get involved in serious incriminating acts leading to drug abuse, group fights, strikes, blood shed and violence. University instead of taking hold of the situation debars and disowns the student suspects of such activities and closes the campus out of fear of bad publicity for a week. This state of affairs ultimately resolves in a few days without conclusion and university resumes its routine. However the criminal silence of university when it comes to protect its students is itself a question mark. Ruining the academic career of a student is a crime as big as killing someone innocent. While there are hundreds of

security cameras in a campus, there must be some task force to control the happening before it worsens. University must own its students and should consider reviewing their previous record of academics before taking any serious action against them. Similar is the situation when a professor unjustly fails some students and passes some in exams. There is no one to question the injustice. Whenever a student gets a medal it is revered to the University while his failures are straightaway declared his own. Threat from forces internally and externally are both the liability of the student. What university has to do just instruct, take exam and kick out. In my opinion the Universities and colleges should take a serious note of these affairs. While they own a student achievements they must own the student as well. A student protection act must be a part of university policy which must be used justly in favor of the student. The act must imply both academic and non-academic spheres. Under the act the rights of a student with respect to university must be declared and their observance and protection must be ensured. This can lead to sound grooming of the new generation of an institute.

Making excuse? Have you ever asked yourself why? May be you want to escape an issue. The issue can be small enough to affect your day or big enough to affect your life. Most of the time excuses are mistaken with reason. How to differentiate between them? Well! Let me introduce you with a very easy way. A “Reason” will always urge you to find a solution. It will never let you walk blind but “An excuse” will always lead you to be blind alley with a board hanging…

“Some other time”

“Procrastination” is a word well defining an excuse. Dusting your room, preparing for an exam, taking up exercise, rising up early in the morning all are locked up in the same room with door labeled as…

ISHRAT FATIMA |1ST YR DPT

“From Tomorrow”

And in many cases “Pakka from tomorrow” But the pertinent issue is always prolonged.

Now how to have a breakup with all this?

Only one slogan can help you counteract with this. “For every excuse there is a strategy? Okay now there are a few non-specific excuses like I can’t, why should I? Why does it matter? It’s just how it is, I don’t even know what I want or specific excuses like I don’t have enough time, enough money, It’s too late, people will be mad at me, what if I get rejected. Both of the kinds can be nullified by a different general way of thinking and believing that you can or want to. And one thing I strongly believe in is:

“I don’t have time ,is a grown up version of dog ate my homework”. Another strategy you need is

“Just start”

Sounds weird? No, it’s not. Want to start exercise? Just wear your sneakers and come outside. Maybe you won’t run a mile but at least you gave a start to your goal.

“Excuses are the tools of Incompetence, used to build monuments of nothingness”.

Now honestly treat your excuses because if you can’t be honest with yourself! who can you be honest with?

You can hear the slogans of charity and love from everywhere but you cannot observe them in practice. Let’s have a few most commonly observed places where we require the patience: When you are at a traffic signal. It looks as if everyone is going to die if signal is late even for a sec-

They make hate speeches against their own country-men while they pretend to be polite when they are supposed to speak with some aggression against the enemies of the country and Islam and this shows their cowardliness not and not patience. Similarly, our country is on the fire of Sectarianism. If we only follow our religion then all the followers will seek rescue form hell and Islam will flourish and spread. More non-Muslims will accept Islam but we are just busy in clamoring “kafir” to others. The only request to the readers is to bseve“the patience”. The legends narrate that there was a casket bestowed upon the Bani-Israel. It was fashioned from a special kind of wood called “Shamshad”. The casket is said to have holy belongings of Prophets. It is related to be the legacy of Musa (A.S) and Haroon(A.S). Israelites always used to make special prayers with its reference in hours of strife and kept it along in there warfare. Their prayers were answered and they won every battle till they had this special casket. A time came when Israelites turned away from the lights of moral values and went into darkness filled with ignorance. They let all their gratitude forgo towards Almighty and embraced satanic deeds. A punishment was inflicted on them for their mischievous acts. Once in a battle, the casket was stolen from them by the enemies and Israelites were defeated. Whole nation regretted on this loss and were overwhelmed by different miseries for a long time. Until they felt the need of selecting a king to combat their lost land and fortune. At that time Allah sent His messenger Samaul (A.S) to show them the right path. The Prophet Samaul (A.S) suggested the name of Saul or Ta’loot to be chosen for the crown saying that under his command Allah would deliver Israelites from their desolated state. Saul was just an ordinary soldier there then but known of his wisdom, nobility and bravery. When the people argued of his position, Samaul (A.S) prophesized that if by dawn the lost casket returned at the home of Saul it would be an indication of his eter-

nal selection Saul. It is said that casket was carried by angels to the house of Saul and he became the king. Under his command the Israelites army marched to the battlefield and reached the bank of a river. The King addressed the subjects “that whoever drinks from this river would not be amongst of us, except those who take only a palm fill”. All men but a few, drank to fill their appetite. Ta’loot declared whosoever would kill the Ja’loot, he would give him his daughter in betrothal and empire. Da’ud (A.S) was one of those noble men who stood by the word of King and killed Ja’loot and the Israelites became victorious in the battlefield. In appreciation, he was married and embraced the crown. Allah Almighty conferred upon him the Prophethood, a son Suleman (A.S) and a kingdom of kingdoms out of His utter grace and mercy. The Israelites did not stick to good after Prophet Suleman (A.S) and lost the holy casket once again but this time forever. It is worthy to mention that there were the remnants of original tablets of Torah, cane and slippers of Musa (A.S), Turban cap of Haroon (A.S), Shirt of Joseph (A.S), Ring of Suleman (A.S) in this casket due to which it was considered so sacred. It is related that to-date they are searching it in the ravages of Mosque of Aksa where it is said to be hidden by Prophet Suleman (A.S). (Source: Al-Quran Ch.2, V.248-50; Tafseer-e-Jalalain)

Dress Competently

Dress Elegant

It’s important to dress proficiently. Avoid wearing informal clothes at the university, this can leave a bad impression on others. Being well dressed makes you look more intelligent .

Opt for Collar

Most universities and schools have collared uniforms therefore collars are linked with academia. Wearing a stiff neat collar makes you look smart , attractive and fresh the entire day.

Pick out Neutrals

If you want to look smarter , avoid eye-catching colors and wear clothes with neutral colors and that don’t distract from your competence or polarize people. You can mix them with different shades to add personality.

Go Classic

You don’t need to blindly follow the latest fashion trends, choose clothes that are never out of fashion and are smart and sophisticated.

Streamline Your Look

Monochromatic Color Themes minimizing visual clutter from your appearance helps streamline the way you look. Wear Close Fitting Clothing. Stay away from anything with an extreme spread. Your necktie should be on the slimmer side as well. Wearing a sport jacket or suit jacket builds up the shoulders– taller and more pronounced shoulders emphasize height. Avoid Short-Sleeved Shirts – especially in the summer–a man on the short side should consider linen trousers and lightweight long sleeve shirts he can roll up on the forearm.

Imperative of girls is to be elegant. Informal clothes at the university, can ruin your impression on others. Being well dressed makes you look more graceful.

Try Collars

The new trending clothes for girls have a collared shirt which fits delicately on the neck and gives a sophisticated look. Being medical students you must emphasize on this as the persona does matter in the field.

Avoid Color Blaze

Avoiding eye catching colors in clothes and in makeup. Being sober is more towards elegance. Take a simpler, fresh and light look to have impression.

Go Classy

Instead of following the latest trends choose what suits you. Most of the times the latest is not the best for you.

Use a Hijab

Hijab is an eastern head covering tradition patterned with modern styles now a days. Matching the colors or taking a superlative white or black with or without head cap can add to your grace.

Though luck does matter somehow when it comes to question paper yet what matters most is that you still perform well when you know that hardly you can attempt one question proficiently. Teachers emphasize on correct

answers to be written but let me tell you that stories can also work equally good provided you write them comprehensively with the appropriate vocabulary as asked in question. As far as viva voce is concerned 1. Your appearance 2. Confidence 3. Ability to speak and convince and 4. Your class record matter more than your answers. The choice of questions in exams is more likely to be a pet one. The students must look for past papers and prepare them well beside their current syllabus. If in case you wish to get through the exams without any problem remember always your subject teacher is the key to your future. The more satisfied a teacher will be the easy will be to pass the exams. So when you work the books don't forget the teachers.

YOU AND YOUR FAMILY Q. Sir How are you? I am fine Thank you very much

Sky of medicine can never be complete without a name whose illustrious efforts earned the country a resilient fame, Holder of Tamgha-e-Imtiaz, very worthy

PROF. DR. FAISAL MASUD

VICE CHANCELLOR KEMU, LAHORE

Q. Tell us about your early life. Where were you born? Your education Alright well I was born in 1954 to the immigrants from Kashmir and my ancestors came to Pakistan. We started our lives from nothing and everything given to us was by this country. My parents were civil servants and as a result of government service my father used to be appointed to different areas of Punjab throughout the year. So my basic education is spread over different areas of Punjab Multan, Sargodha, Sheikhupura, Lahore, Gujranwala… all these places.

THE PHYSIOTHERAPIST 2014-15

Q. Any childhood prank or incident that still makes you smile? O, O Yes. I was always fascinated by detective agencies. Even now Sherlock Holmes is my favorite character. I started a little company when I was in class five “An Associates of Private Detectives Agency” (Laughing). Obviously it didn’t take up. But that was my childhood dream and something which still makes me smile when I look back. Q. What kind of Student you were? My Teachers told me that I was a very good student but to tell you the truth I wasn’t a good student even in medical school, I would hardly go to the class room, I would hardly attend the wards I would just read on my own pace. Once my teacher asked me why you do that I said “Well sir you know you do it for mediocre people, you don’t cater for bottom and the top. You can consider either the bottom or the top but you don’t cater for me.” Q. Memorable happening at medical College? Once I thought people can memorize Quran why don’t I memorize whole medicine book so I did page to page, word to word. But nobody told me that edition will be changed after three years.

Q. You were Mama’s Boy or Papa’s boy I was very idiosyncratic and nobody’s boy. I was so idiosyncratic that my father once asked me to show the result card and I refused. I told him that you are only allowed to see one thing, did I stood first in the class or not and if I have stood first in the class then you are not allowed to see the result card. My father was furious. Q. Tell us about your family. Who is the dearest to you in family? (Smiling) it’s very hard obviously, both of my parents are alive and I am very privileged that they are alive. My Mom is very dear to me. But my father is the one who told me on returning from hajje baitullah that he prayed only for one thing for me, that I may be blessed with healing hands. As written on back of a rikshaw it is due to my mother’s prayers … the one mine states it is due to my father’s prayers. (Giggles)

Q. Have you ever been bullied at school or college? Well once you are that sort of person people make fun of you. People call you nerd or words like that… same was the case for me. People used to think me a very non serious student but they didn’t know I liked to study my way. I played tennis while they were in ward but I scrolled books for next 18 hrs. Q. Any literary tastes? Any book, poetry or story you can narrate to us? Yes, I would recommend you to read Betaaal Pecheesee. Q. Your favorite teacher? My favorite teacher was my Professor Renauld Kar… Q. Your favorite place to eat? My own home, I am a very simple eater. Q. Your Favorite dish I eat sparingly I am not into pleasures. Pleasures are detrimental. I eat cheese gorgonzola from Italy. I am a certified

chef I learnt French cooking during my visit abroad. Q. What is the secret of your fitness? Doing Maths and eating healthy. Q. Your favorite Quote? “Kasbe Kamaal Kun kay Azeez e Jahan Shawih” the Persian verse. Q. Your favorite song? A very old song is “baby its cold outside” Q. Any movie you liked the most? Black and white movie “Cassa Blanca” is my favorite. Q. What do you do in leisure time once you get it? Doing Maths, what an unpleasant pastime (laughing) Q. Have you ever been in love? I have always been in love… Love is the essence of life. I love my Profession, Maths, Pakistan. Love means to give without expecting anything in return. Enduring huge amount of pain when separating from your loved object. Q. What kind of person you are ? I am a very easy person but I go by logic. Q. How did you become a doctor instead of physicist? My hero George Hauwnhwor was jailed. He made atom bomb but on its use condemned as violence against humanity. Then America went into war with Vietnam A picture of a girl running out of terror… came in newspaper … When I saw this two things happened I became enemy of America and my hero became chigawara.. and as he was a doctor so I became doctor I tried to take cigar like him but couldn’t.

THE PHYSIOTHERAPIST 2014-15

for Pakistan. I prepared guidelines for dengue prevention day and night single handedly. Q. The most heartbreaking moment of life? When my daughter didn’t wanted to become a doctor… She said “I have realized that If I couldn’t become a good doctor… people would say what a stupid daughter of a magnificent man. And If I surpassed you I would not bear myself because I don’t want to do that either.” Q. How do you describe your life as a teacher and a parent? Its not very different to be a teacher or parent… Most parents have abdicated their responsibility of guiding their children. But being a teacher I guide my students…. I asked my teacher whether to marry or not so do my students Q. The most tough experience of life ? Coming face to face with my own mistakes… it is not easy. Q. The most critical decision of your life? It was to become a doctor rather than a physicist. I still miss mathematics. Q. Something in which you failed after all right steps. What did you learned? O yes… many a times you do right but result is wrong … every mistake tells u that u are a human not a demigod. God tells us that you are a human…. Failures are very important. Q. How do you define LIBERAL? Are you liberal or religious? It is ability to think with liberty not action of your choice. Religious thought is the most liberal thought. Q. How do you compare your experience as Principal at SIMS and as VC at

EXPERIENCES Q. Why Medicine and Endocrinology? Medicine because I couldn’t stand blood of humans. Against my nature to harm a human. Q. Describe your Journey so far? My journey is sequel of faith. Keep faith and you will succeed. Believe in yourself and you can do wonders. Q. The proudest moment as Pakistani? My proud moment was when I worked

KEMU? Sims had to come from a scratch but kemu is having its own base and history and to maintain it is a challenge. Q. Have you been abroad? Where which place you liked the most and why? My whole education is all abroad. My favorite is spain alhamra. Spanish and Moroccon tradition is so close to that of Pakistan. Q. Despite of so many apparent adversities around and opportunities abroad what keeps you in Pakistan? Because I love Pakistan.

TERRORISM

Q. Your views about recent Peshawar incident? Huge amount of atrocity on children. Totally obnoxious act . If you are to plan a strategy to combat terrorism – what will be your first step ? To think open mindedly and liberally. When we bracket people on belief and religions it becomes extremism… stop segregating people… we are divided…. Get united. Q. Politics for vote or common good? What is your type? I would recommend you to read trial of Socrates… when he was alleged to astray people. And was sentenced to death. And he was given poison. Plato said that a wisest soul on face of earth has been incriminated by democracy. Vote today has no difference today… Votes sold for 5kg oil pack do not worth it?

THE PHYSIOTHERAPIST 2014-15

PHYSIOTHERAPY Q. What is your opinion about Physiotherapy and School of Physiotherapy Physiotherapy itself is a very important field. Q. School of Physiotherapy is enrolled in KEMU as constituent part – What do you say? It hasn’t been but you have to work harder Q. School of Physiotherapy lacks basic faculty- students suffer the most of all- are you aware? Yes, Because it had not been an inherent part of university. It is still attached to Mayo Hospital. Actually the interests of students and collage are differently spaced which is a problem. Q. School of Physiotherapy students have hostel/accommodation issue – Your stance for future? I have made accommodation plan for physiotherapy students. I am your examination board like UHS for any college. If you become my constituent I will be responsible for you. I am trying for budget to be approved from secretary health for your hostel accommodation. Q. School of physiotherapy students are in need of house jobs – your strategy? This is again a sort of thing which your college has to take up with the university. Your college is a free standing college todate. Q. What are your plans about Physiotherapy at KEMU? Let me tell you that I talked to Prof. Dr. Mumtaz Hassan to help us join with University of Toronto to make your degree recognized in Canada.

EDUCATION SYSTEM Q. Which education system you are inspired from? No education system is good or bad… if you work good every system is right. Q. Examination system of KEMU is more discriminating for all Allied Health Sciences- Where they have each year extended to 6 months by it self- How would you justify? I agree with you … but it comes to when your faculty doesn’t complete number of

lectures. Three levels curriculum in time, in time selection of board and proper collaboration between college and exam board. Administratively it has to be managed. How do you plan to improve education standards at KEMU? There is a lot of scope of improvement in education. Level of understanding. Modular system must be integrated

Q. Work for Luck or Luck for work I don’t believe in luck… it is randomness.

OTHER

Q. Any charity you do and why? Very personal matter and Its between me and my God. Knowledge must be shared by teachers and telling truth. Q. Something you wanted to say to your parents but you couldn’t? That’s I have been a very nasty child and thanks for bearing with me. YOUR CHOICE Q. One chance to relive – what would you Q. Technology or Tradition? like to change or improve? Technology and tradition not exclusive. To do physics and maths Q. Passion or Profession? Q. Something you regret? Passion if called love than yes I don’t because I don’t do anything that I Q. Season or Reason? don’t want to do… Reason of course. Q. Time Make You Precious Or You Make Q. Imran or Sharif? Person who loves Pakistan would have my Time Precious? Both are precious… I am precious as I vote. Mera quaid to Quaid e azam hai have a short time… and time is precious Q. Faith or Trial? because I have to squeeze every drop of Faith juice out of it. Q. Fanatic or Realistic? Q. Any dream you crave to cherish? Believer of Faith is called fanatic then I am the one… ALATAPETE… I am not real- To introduce a world class research faculty in Pakistan… istic Q. Message for magazine students , facQ. Patriotic or practical? ulty or general? I am in love with my country. No second The Persian verse thought Q. Old is gold or bold is sold? Wisdom of age and vigor of youth Q. Summer or winter? I think Spring (laughs)

We: THANK YOU SIR FOR YOUR TIME. VC: PLEASURE IS MINE.

Departure from KEMU premises at 12:00 pm Three Buses were hired 1 for Final Year and Teachers 2 fourth year 3 for 3rd Year nd rd 2 and 3 year didn’t go on the trip only 2 students from 1st year came along with final year. Departure from LHR premises by 1:00 pm Straight on Motorway –journey began with recitation Silence for a few moments than lively chats began. Music hunger rose, we bought CD’s on way from a tuck shop – Honey Singh 3ps and 1 bollywood latest movies mix Party scene settled in – dance of boys – girls screaming, faculty enjoying Whole night passed enjoying

Stay at Bhera and rush to the rest rooms Journey continued and reached Islamabad by 6:00 am and crossed towards Murree by 6:30 am. The sudden ascent and diesel fumes smell Emesis started in our bus first and I was the scroll cutter All three buses were stopped every one inquired me of health, for which I am still thankful to them all. We reached Gillani height hotel far across Murree mall road by 8:30 am Settled, got rooms and rested. Cold, jumped into blankets and bed I slept straight away. Meanwhile my phone rang – friend received it, it was form dept. Dr. Juniad - said “Beta patient check krwa k ajao”. My friend reminded him of our trip then he said “Ok, enjoy yourself”.

THE PHYSIOTHERAPIST 2014-15

At 10:30 am – we went for break fast Parathas, chanay, omelet , tea, cold drink. I could hardly finish one paratha, being sick of altitudes. By 11:30 am we left for Neelam Valey – Kokala BridgeAzad Jammu Kashmir Enjoyed playing with water , shot snaps- walking barefooted in ice-cold water in icy breeze. Had lunch which was unfortunately quite abundant but half cooked, enjoyed drink and I ate whole pack of Nestle Raita intead As it was again an ascent –same thing happened to me in evening as in morning – emesis, I was almost half drained of total energy at hotel No sooner we returned to hotel changed clothes and slept right away. Woke up at 11:00 pm and went to fri-chicks restaurant by 11:30 pm had Karizma burger, crested chicken ps and drink, I ate half and took half for later but gave it to a little begging girl on our way to hotel Did some window shopping of shawls on Mall road All of a sudden Safa, Gul and Arooj came up with a wild idea of tasting cigarette – calling themselves

Jahaz – being unfortunate to lose the electric supply of their room, the very moment they tried to iron their clothes in morning for Neelma Valley. They actually didn’t do that but when told as bar he practically gave a demo with a pack in reality

THE PHYSIOTHERAPIST 2014-15

We returned to hotel by 1:30 am and 4th year students prepared for bonfire due to cold burning wood was quite hectic and it took and half an hour to burn By the time bonfire was ready every other person fell asleep. But me and my class fellows were awake. All talking horror and terrifying me, continuously taking advantage of my fear, I was literally very angry for that whole night as it wasted just with open eyes but later enjoyed the moment which became a great memory to me. Being the center of amusement for others is a great deal. Finally we came into rooms by 3:30 am and slept by 4:30 am In morning by 9:00 am we went for breakfast to same Makkah restaurant and being careful of my sickness. I did not eat anything except few biscuits and took tea. We left for trekking to Nathiagali by 11:50-12:00 noon We thought at first we were about to pass the same last year’s track of Ayubia National park but fortunately it was different. The Mukshpuri tip is an adventure in itself a 4-6km trek with such a variety of scapes and lands that keeps the trekkers going all along. In the beginning it looked so difficult being steep but this way or that we moved talking, chatting and taking snaps, singing, resting, sighing, laughing.

The varied nature all around was so enchanting that one would definitely try to capture every single moment of the scene. But as a matter of fact, nature is totally out of comprehension of medical minds like ours, so briefly it was just awesome. Taking friends along and pulling them forth when they are out of breath and get tired. Thats what I and Faheem did – We carried bags of our female counterparts in whole trekking, look at the coincidence – I got red bags while I had red joggers – faheem had golden brown bags while he was wearing off white clothes, what a matching ;) We passed through a wild life zoo which had just a leopard and a baby bear may be all others were on a trip too :P We finished the tiresome track finally rushed to tea stall and took a cup for ourselves. We started as first and finished as last :D, after all seniority demands that :p I purchased a shawl for my Mom , so did my friend. we got into the bus once again and left for Islamabad. Most of the people changed outfits for dinner. It was almost 6:30 pm in evening. We started playing Antakshiri and the way we grilled every song word by word is still amusing. We rested In midway and again continued towards destination.

THE PHYSIOTHERAPIST 2014-15

We reached in the lap of hill where monal restaurant was located and began ascending. The sharp turns were so enthralling that almost every one was saying takbeer. We landed on the gates and marched in the restaurant. The brilliant view of Islamabad city, was totally outclass and out of explanation and totally outclass and out of explanation and out of capture of digital camera too :p We packed was no better than somebody’s valima buffet packed by aunties. Hahahaha :D Anyway it was a case with just a few like me. Most of others filled their tummies to their best And by 12:30 am we left monal started journey back to home city. Energy stores depleted all the way till sunrise. Everyone in bust was nearly “tun” on return. We came back and reached. University by 7:30 am and trip finally finished. I must say being together is a feeling un parallel. We enjoyed each and every moment of this trip as it was our last in department being final year. The memory is still fresh in minds. Infact it was a wonderful journey indeed.

Students of School of Physiotherapy have always been an active participant in academic and extra academic activities within and outside university. A simple evidence of these activities of students is its organization called Student Focus which is the first and only known organization in the field of Physiotherapy that represents students of this community. It is deep rooted in School of Physiotherapy where it all began from just a newsletter under the kind guidance of our Principal Mrs. Saleha Saleem Bukhari. The credit of its establishment is in the pocket of DPT Batch (2010-14). The main founders of the organization includes Muhammad Sheraz, Asbar Javaid, Safa Moeed, Faheem Ahmad, Gul-e-Raana Khan. The team now comprises of students from most of the Physiotherapy institutes present all over Pakistan. The organization aims to serve field by creating awareness and connecting students and professionals through its network. Here is a small glimpse of the progress and repute of Student focus, from its conception in 2010 to-date. From a Newsletter to Recreational activities and from Continuous Medical Education to Annual get together, the organization covers all.
