QUARTERLY UPDATE (Q2, 2016)

Diversifying of our Economy, one Ship at a time…

Hello S&R Reader, Thanks for your continued interest in the on-going expansion of the S&R Industry.

With the long-awaited inauguration of the ‘Third Set of Locks’ project in the Republic of Panama held on Sunday June 26, 2016 by the transit of the 300 metre ‘COSCO SHIPPING PANAMA’ containership guided by the 29 metre ‘CERRO SANTIAGO’ tugboat (refer to page 15) Trinidad and Tobago needs to respond and respond quickly by implementing several maritime initiatives. One such initiative could well be the SRDC New La Brea shipyard project at La Brea. This can create new jobs and earn valuable foreign exchange. Anticipated Panama Canal throughput is expected to double capacity from 300 million to 600 million tons PCUMS (Panama Canal Universal Measuring System) representing an enormous opportunity for our S&R cluster stakeholders to also service even more ocean-going ships, presently estimated to be 41,000+ passing within twenty-five nautical miles of our coastline.

UWI-ALJGSB AND TTSR SIGN MOU On May 25, 2016, The University of the West Indies, Arthur Lok Jack Graduate School of Business (UWI-ALJGSB) together with the T&T Shipbuilding & Repair Maritime Cluster (TTSR) signed a Memorandum of Understanding to undertake maritime project initiatives involving research, the sharing of knowledge and to showcase technologies. LA BREA SHIPYARD FEATURED IN CARIBBEAN MARITME CARIBBEAN MARITIME, the official journal of the Caribbean Shipping Association (CSA) based on the island of Jamaica, prominently featured an article titled ‘TRINIDAD & TOBAGO NEW DAWN AT LA BREA’ which was published in their latest Issue No. 28 (May-September 2016) publication. The article centred on the development of our shipyard project at La Brea, South-western Trinidad which is intended to cater for Panamax, Aframax and LNG-carriers. The initial feedback received from their large readership, including CSA members throughout the region is that our shipyard project will provide a positive boost for the Caribbean maritime sector, alongside the recent opening of the Third Set of Locks project in Panama.

Our Developmental Programmes and S&R Cluster activities, include the rapid expansion of existing Shipyards and the construction of a new World-Class Shipyard at La Brea, as we continue to establish strong linkages with our maritime neighbours to successfully compete in the global Shipbuilding & Repair industry.
