Iron Man 3 3D

Promised Land

The third outing for Marvel’s chameleon action hero finds sardonic billionaire inventor Tony Stark undone by a mercilessly ingenious foe known only as The Mandarin. Naturally, in the guise of his ironclad alter ego, Stark fights to put his world back together again while simultaneously inflicting maximum retribution. And in the process our hero finally manages to assuage his nagging doubt as to whether the man makes the suit or the suit makes the man.

Its title an ironic biblical reference, Gus Van Sant’s latest has co-writer Matt Damon playing a salesman who believes that the only way hard-pressed farmers can stop their rural communities from atrophying is to sell their fracking rights to his employers, Global Power Solutions. Along with his partner Sue (Frances McDormand), he arrives in McKinley, PA only to be confronted by a local schoolteacher (Hal Holbrook) and an environmentalist (John Krasinski) who question both his integrity and the truth about fracking’s ecological impact. Promised Land charts the twists, turns and romantic asides of the subsequent battle of wills. Having worked together so effectively on Good Will Hunting, Van Sant and Damon have crafted an engaging, often gently witty film that’s also very timely.

Parker

Showing from 3 May Cert: 15 Duration: 118 minutes Parker (Jason Statham) is a professional thief who lives by a personal code of ethics: don’t steal from people who can’t afford it and don’t hurt people who don’t deserve it. But in his latest heist, his crew double crosses him, steals his stash, and leaves him for dead. Determined to make sure they regret it, Parker tracks them to Palm Beach, playground of the rich and famous, where the crew is planning their biggest heist ever. Donning the disguise of a rich Texan, Parker takes on an unlikely partner, Leslie (Jennifer Lopez), a savvy insider who’s short on cash, but big on looks and ambition. Together, they devise a plan to hijack the score, take everyone down and get away clean.

Beyond The Hills

Showing from 3 May Cert: 12A Duration: 152 minutes Romanian language film with English subtitles. With several festival gongs already under its belt, Romania’s official Oscars entry Beyond The Hills is a taut morality drama centring on two orphan girls whose romance leads to tragedy, and not just for them. Alina, the more worldly of the two, returns from seedy bar work in Germany to find her lover Voichita living in a convent and determinedly pious. The impulsive Alina persuades the deranged priest to let her join the nuns, causing much mayhem. She ends up in hospital diagnosed with mental illness, which in turn leads to a dreadful exorcism. One of Romania’s sharpest writer-directors, Cristian Mungiu, brings this difficult story vividly to life, using distinctive, often static camera work, and drawing tremendous performances from his young cast.

The Host

Showing from 3 May Cert: 12A Duration: 125 minutes Based on another hugely successful novel by Twilight author Stephenie Meyer, The Host is a mesmerising equal to the vampire franchise so beloved by her countless fans. Melanie Stryder (Saoirse Ronan, the charismatic star of Hanna) is one of the few humans left after aliens defeat most of humankind by taking over their souls. Melanie’s would-be alien invader, known as Wanderer, finds that she is unwilling to give up her true being, and in particular that she retains a determination to find her lost brother Jamie (Chandler Canterbury) and her lover Jared (Max Irons, son of Jeremy). Spookily, Wanderer gradually begins to sympathise with Melanie and her quest, but their two spirits conflict and external forces seek to take control. Director Andrew Niccol (Gattaca, The Truman Show) has crafted a remarkable adventure about trust, love and the indomitability of the human spirit.

The Princess Bride Showing from 3 May Cert: PG Duration: 98 minutes

Rob Reiner’s classic 1987 fairytale with a healthy dose of tongue-in-cheek humour, The Princess Bride remains as fresh and as entertaining today as when it was first released. All the standard fairytale characters are here - the handsome prince, the beautiful princess, the ugly but good-hearted ogre, the evil king and the wise old man with a knack for potion making - but holding it all together is the inimitable humour of its creators William Goldman (novel and screenplay), Mel Brooks (producer) and of course Rob Reiner at the helm. The Princess Bride will have you rolling about with laughter and by the time it’s finished you’ll want to repeat the journey all over again. A favourite for all the family.

6

Star Trek: Into Darkness 3D Showing from 9 May Cert: 12A Duration: 129 minutes

Opening as Spock (Zachary Quinto) battles to stop a volcano on the planet Nibiru from destroying the fleeing Enterprise, and then descending into a breathtaking vision of 23rd-century London, director J.J. Abrams’ second Star Trek outing visually out-stuns even his first. With Benedict Cumberbatch’s much-teased, much hushed-up role as the heinous villain, plus many old hands back on board – including Chris Pine as Kirk, Karl Urban as Bones, Zoe Saldana as Uhura, and Simon Pegg’s permanently rattled Scotty uttering the immortal line, “I cannae do it, Captain” – everything we love about the ever-evolving franchise, plus an exceptionally big budget, guarantees awe. Abrams of course knows better than simply to gorge on CGI, and working again with writers Roberto Orci and Alex Kurtzman, he’s built a narrative spine that’s as robust and complex as the Enterprise itself.

The Look of Love

Love Is All You Need

In the 1970s, Paul Raymond was known as the King of Soho, a flamboyant entrepreneur who transformed that vibrant square mile of central London into a swinging adult playground. With a stable of glamour magazines, that included the racy Men Only, Raymond ruled over a night-time world of erotica that came to represent a new era of permissiveness. Raymond seemed to have it all, but, as Michael Winterbottom’s new film goes to show, appearances can be deceptive. Starring Steve Coogan, The Look of Love traces Raymond’s rise from a provincial showman named Geoffrey Quinn to his wealthy later life as owner of a vast percentage of prime Soho property. But his private life was much more complicated, as we get to see in the film...

Love Is All You Need is written and directed by Golden Globe and Oscar winning filmmaker Susanne Bier. Philip (Pierce Brosnan), an Englishman living in Denmark, is a lonely, middle-aged widower and estranged single father. Ida (Trine Dyrholm) is a Danish hairdresser, recuperating from a long bout of illness, who’s husband has just left her for a younger woman. The fates of these two bruised souls are about to intertwine, as they embark on a trip to Italy to attend the wedding of Philip’s son and Ida’s daughter. With warmth, affection and confidence, Susanne Bier has shaken a cocktail of love, loss, absurdity, humor, and delicately drawn characters that will leave only the hardest heart untouched.

A Late Quartet

A Bug’s Life

A Late Quartet, the first fiction film from director Yaron Zilberman, follows the lives of four long time colleagues who play in a celebrated string quartet together. As the group begin their 25th season together, the eldest member (Christopher Walken) discovers he has the beginning stage of Parkinson’s disease. Because he can’t perform to the best of his abilities, he would like to bow out of the quartet without disbanding it. However, a married couple within the group (Philip Seymour Hoffman and Catherine Keener) are on the brink of breaking up, and their rocky period isn’t helped by the fact that the fourth member has begun an affair with their college-age daughter.

The action turns on a misfit ant named Flik (voiced by Dave Foley) as he tries to save his colony from a greedy gang of grasshoppers led by Hopper (voiced by Kevin Spacey). Flik’s attempts at heroism seem headed for disaster until he meets up with a bunch of performers from a flea circus. As Hopper prepares to descend for another raid, Flik and the circus bugs rally to the occasion, resulting in a comic confrontation that will delight and amaze moviegoers of all ages.

The Great Gatsby 3D

Showing from 16 May Cert: 12A Duration: 143 minutes For this new adaptation of F. Scott Fitzgerald’s bittersweet novel set during New York’s gaudy jazz era, director Baz Luhrmann has considerably upped the ante. The Great Gatsby follows Fitzgerald-like, would-be writer Nick Carraway (Tobey Maguire) as he leaves the Midwest and comes to New York City in the spring of 1922, an era of loosening morals, glittering jazz, bootleg kings, and sky-rocketing stocks. Chasing his own American Dream, Nick lands next door to a mysterious, party-giving millionaire, Jay Gatsby (Leonardo DiCaprio), and across the bay from his cousin, Daisy (Carey Mulligan), and her philandering, blue-blooded husband, Tom Buchanan (Joel Edgerton). It is thus that Nick is drawn into the captivating world of the super rich, their illusions, loves and deceits. As Nick bears witness, within and without the world he inhabits, he pens a tale of impossible love, incorruptible dreams and high-octane tragedy, and holds a mirror to our own modern times and struggles.

12

The SPIrIT of 45

Showing from 17 May Cert: u Duration: 98 minutes Barely pausing for breath after his trenchant Scottish comedy The Angel’s Share, Ken Loach returns to documentary for the first time since 2005’s McLibel for The Spirit of 45. The title refers to the last year of World War II, when Britain’s Labour government rallied the nation to rebuild its battered economy. An unabashed socialist, Loach believes that, “generosity, mutual support and cooperation were the watchwords of the age. It is time to remember the determination of those who were intent on building a better world.” To that end he trawled local and national film archives for rarely seen footage of the newly nationalised industries and the infant National Health Service, melding it with interviews and sound recordings to create a fascinating and moving account of a time too easily forgotten by those who now live comfortably on its legacy.

The CrooDS

Showing from 17 May Cert: u Duration: 98 minutes A second chance to see this family adventure if you missed it over the Easter Holidays. This beautifully realised cartoon feature follows the world’s first prehistoric family who are forced to abandon the cave that has long been their haven. They enter a new and often frightening world in search of a safer environment, and are eventually led to a magical new land by a quick-witted teenager. Originating as it does from DreamWorks, this is more than just kids’ entertainment: its underlying messages won’t be lost on environmentalists, or on those who cherish meaningful family values.

13

ePIC 3D

Showing from 24 May Cert: not Yet rated Duration: TBC Epic is based on William Joyce’s children’s book The Leaf Men and the Brave Good Bugs. A young girl named Mary Katherine (voiced by Amanda Seyfried) lives in a cabin in the woods with her father Professor Bomba (Jason Sudeikis) and dog. Her father has long studied a group of warriors who live in the forest and protect it as guardians of good. He will often go into the forest and survey them. One day, the professor does not return from a hike in the forest, so Mary Katherine sets out to look for him. Hours later, she comes upon a group of glowing, falling leaves. Catching one of them, she is suddenly shrunken down. In her minuscule state, she discovers the group of warriors Professor Bomba has studied, who are known as the Leafmen. Soon she is forced to assist them in a war against forces of evil known as the Boggans and their villainous leader Mandrake (Christoph Waltz), while trying to find out how to return home. With voices from Josh Hutcherson, Colin Farrell, Beyonce Knowles and Chris O’Dowd, this is a star-studded film for all the family.

14

Lore

Showing from 24 May Cert: 15 Duration: 109 minutes German language film with English subtitles. Left to fend for themselves after their SS officer father and mother are interred by the victorious Allies at the end of World War II, five German children undertake a harrowing journey that exposes them to the reality and consequences of their parents’ actions. Led by the eldest sibling, 14-year old Lore (striking newcomer Saskia Rosendahl), they set out on a harrowing journey across a devastated country to reach their grandmother in the north. After meeting the charismatic Thomas, a mysterious young refugee, Lore soon finds her world shattered by feelings of both hatred and desire as she must learn to trust the one person she has always been taught to hate in order to survive.

Dark Skies

All Stars

From the producer of Paranormal Activity, Insidious and Sinister comes Dark Skies, a supernatural thriller that follows a young family living in the suburbs. As husband and wife Daniel and Lacey Barret witness an escalating series of disturbing events involving their family, their safe and peaceful home quickly unravels. When it becomes clear that the Barret family is being targeted by an unimaginably terrifying and deadly force, Daniel and Lacey take matters in their own hands to solve the mystery of what is after their family.

Horrified that they might lose their youth club to property developers, best pals Ethan and Jaden decide to stage a street-dance contest to raise enough money to save their beloved hangout - whilst Ethan simultaneously hopes to win over Lucy with his smart moves. Unfortunately Jaden’s parents have banned him from dancing, and Ethan and most of their new All Stars crew are burdened with two left feet. However, the boys are determined they can pull it off, and the film follows them as they work towards their goal.

Evil Dead

In The House

With both The Evil Dead’s original creator, Sam Raimi, and its original star, Bruce Campbell, as co-producers, this much anticipated remake is billed as “the most terrifying film you will ever experience.” Five friends decamp to a remote cabin to help drug-addicted Mia (Jane Levy) get clean, and after they discover a carelessly discarded Book of the Dead, their numbers are gradually and brutally reduced. As with the original, the script – here co-written by Diablo Cody – is simultaneously both chilling and hilarious (e.g. “If we want to help Mia, we’re going to have to kill her”). Essential horror viewing.

French language film with English subtitles. Germain (Fabrice Luchini) is an old-fashioned teacher at a trendy secondary school who discovers a renewed purpose in the intriguing prose delivered by student Claude (newcomer Ernst Umhauer). This mischievous outsider turns his fascination with a classmate’s seemingly ideal bourgeois household – and in particular Emmanuelle Seigner’s yummy maman – into a series of weekly writing exercises. Germain seizes upon the pages, but what does his eagerness to sharpen up the writing tell us about his own stalled creativity, his petty prejudices, and even his arid marriage to art gallery manager Jeanne (Kristin Scott Thomas)?
