SAVING MR BANKS Showing from: Fri 6 Dec Two-time Academy Award-winner Emma Thompson and fellow double Oscar-winner Tom Hanks star in the untold backstory of how Disney’s classic Mary Poppins made it to the screen. When Walt Disney’s daughters begged him to make a movie of their favourite book, P.L. Travers’ Mary Poppins, he made them a promise one that he didn’t realize would take 20 years to keep. In his quest to obtain the rights, Walt comes up against a curmudgeonly, uncompromising writer who has absolutely no intention of letting her beloved magical nanny get mauled by the Hollywood machine. It is only when he reaches into his own childhood that Walt discovers the truth about the ghosts that haunt her, and together they set Mary Poppins free to ultimately make one of the most endearing films in cinematic history.

ROYAL SHAKESPEARE COMPANY ENCORE PRESENTS

RICHARD II

JACKASS PRESENTS: BAD GRANDPA

Showing on: Sun 1 Dec

Showing from: Fri 6 Dec

Recorded live on stage at the Royal Shakespeare Company, this production of Richard II was the fastest selling show in the RSC’s history, and stars David Tennant in the title role, with direction from RSC Artistic Director Gregory Doran. Richard is King, ordained by God to lead his people. But he is also a man of very human weakness. A man whose vanity threatens to divide the great houses of England and drag his people into a dynastic civil war that will last 100 years...

The signature Jackass character 86 year old Irving Zisman (Johnny Knoxville) and Billy (Jackson Nicholl) will take movie audiences along for the most hilarious hidden camera road trip ever captured on film. Along the way Irving will introduce the young and impressionable Billy to people, places and situations that give new meaning to the term childrearing. The duo will encounter disgruntled child beauty pageant contestants (and their equally disgruntled mothers), funeral home mourners, biker bar patrons and a whole lot of unsuspecting citizens. Real people in unreal situations, making for one really messed up comedy!

Price: £14/£10

FROZEN 3D & 2D Showing from: Fri 6 Dec Walt Disney Animation Studios, the studio behind Tangled and Wreck-It Ralph, presents Frozen, a stunning big-screen comedy adventure. Fearless optimist Anna (voiced by Kristen Bell) sets off on an epic journey - teaming up with rugged mountain man Kristoff (voiced by Jonathan Groff) and his loyal reindeer Sven - to find her sister Elsa (voiced by Idina Menzel), whose icy powers have trapped the kingdom of Arendelle in eternal winter. Encountering Everest-like conditions, mystical trolls and a hilarious snowman named Olaf, Anna and Kristoff battle the elements in a race to save the kingdom. Frozen is the first festive film to show at Mareel this December, so come along and catch the Christmas spirit with this cool comedy-adventure for all the family!

IN FEAR Showing from: Fri 6 Dec Tom and Lucy have known each other for precisely two weeks when he invites her to join him and his friends at a music festival. She accepts, but discovers en route with him in the car that he has secretly booked a hotel room for just the two of them. As the would-be couple get increasingly lost on the country lanes, misgivings become mistrust – which then gives way to terror as they begin to realise that someone or something out there in the dark is after them. Keeping most of the action confined within the tensely claustrophobic car, director Jeremy Lovering (Sherlock) expertly builds up the atmosphere, and his decision to conceal the plot from the lead actors results in wonderfully convincing performances in this unnerving British horror.

THE STATE ACADEMIC BOLSHOI THEATRE OF RUSSIA PRESENTS

LE CORSAIRE

Showing on: Sun 8 Dec, 3pm A swashbuckling romantic tale of the rescue of a beautiful slave from her tyrannical master by a handsome pirate, with some of ballet’s most famous individual passages. Medora, a young Greek girl, is sold to Pasha by a slave dealer. The pirate Conrad seizes Medora and declares his love for her. But Conrad’s jealous right-hand man sends Medora back to the slave dealer, who again sells her to Pasha... Suspense is at the core of this lavish exotic fable, an amazing production complete with pirates, kidnapping, a shipwreck, and a record 120 dancers on stage. Price: £14 / £10

CUTIE AND THE BOXER Showing from: Fri 6 Dec Documentary. A reflection on love and the creative spirit, this New York story explores the 40-year marriage of renowned “boxing” painter Ushio Shinohara and his artist wife, Noriko. As a young artist in Tokyo, Ushio seemed destined for fame, but met with little commercial success after he moved to New York City in 1969, seeking international recognition. When Noriko moved to New York to study art, she fell in love with Ushio, abandoning her education to become wife and assistant to an unruly husband. Over the course of their marriage, the roles have shifted. Now 80, Ushio struggles to establish his artistic legacy, while Noriko is recognized for her own art - a series of drawings entitled “Cutie,” depicting her challenging past with Ushio. Spanning four decades, the film is a moving portrait of a couple wrestling with the eternal themes of sacrifice and ageing, against a background of lives dedicated to art.

NATIONAL LAMPOON’S CHRISTMAS VACATION

CHRISTMAS

CLAS

Showing from: Fri 13 Dec Chevy Chase, star of National Lampoon’s Vacation and its sequel, is back as the paterfamilias of the Griswold family (including Beverly D’Angelo as his missus) to skewer the Yuletide season. Chevy mugs, trips, falls, mashes his fingers and stubs his toes as he prepares to invite numerous dysfunctional relatives to his household to celebrate Christmas. Amidst the more outrageous sight gags (including the electrocution of a cat as the Christmas tree is lit) the film betrays a sentimental streak, with old wounds healing and longestranged relatives reuniting in the Griswold living room.

THE BISHOP’S WIFE Showing from: Fri 13 Dec An Episcopal Bishop, Henry Brougham, has been working for months on the plans for an elaborate new cathedral which he hopes will be paid for primarily by a wealthy, stubborn widow. He is losing sight of his family and of why he became a churchman in the first place. Enter Dudley, an angel sent to help him. Dudley does help everyone he meets, but not necessarily in the way they would have preferred. With the exception of Henry, everyone loves him, but Henry begins to believe that Dudley is there to replace him, both at work and in his family’s affections, as Christmas approaches...

THE MUPPET CHRISTMAS CAROL Showing from: Fri 13 Dec Gonzo as Dickens tells the story to Rizzo. One Christmas Eve, miserly Scrooge (Michael Caine) reluctantly gives Bob Cratchit (Kermit) Chrismas Day off, unpaid. That night, three spirits visit him. The first takes him back to his youth when he lost the beautiful Belle; the second shows him the penurious Cratchits in the present; the third shows a possible future - him dead and unlamented and the Cratchits mourning the loss of Tiny Tim. Awakening, Scrooge distributes largesse to all, and Gonzo/Dickens says he has changed forever... A Christmas Classic for all the family.

RARE EXPORTS: A CHRISTMAS TALE Showing from: Fri 20 Dec Finnish language film with English subtitles. In this alternative Christmas story, something evil is stirring in the depths of Lapland’s Korvatunturi Mountains in the week before Christmas. 486 metres underground, a team of American geologists have come across something utterly mystifying: a 65-foot wall of sawdust. This is no natural phenomenon, but a thick blanket concealing a terrifying secret buried centuries ago by the nearby villagers. Meanwhile the time of the annual reindeer hunt arrives but the herds do not: all the reindeer, inexplicably, have been viciously slaughtered. Young local boy Pietari (Onni Tommila) is convinced he knows what’s really going on: Santa Claus has come to town, and he’s not bearing gifts or spreading good cheer...

IT’S A WONDERFUL LIFE Showing from: Fri 20 Dec An angel helps a compassionate but despairingly frustrated businessman by showing what life would have been like if he never existed. It’s a Wonderful Life is a beloved Christmas movie, but it’s so much more. A moving examination of the worth of a single man’s life, it is dark and bright, full of passion, despair and joy. Very sweet and with moments that can surprise you even after you’ve seen it dozens of times, a great film for the festive season.

MARY POPPINS Showing from: Fri 20 Dec Long resistant to film adaptations of her Mary Poppins books, P.L. Travers finally succumbed to the entreaties of Walt Disney, and the result is often considered the finest of Disney’s personally supervised films. The movie combines songs, colour and sequences of live action blended with the movements of animated figures. Mary Poppins is a kind of Super-nanny who flies in with her umbrella in response to the request of the Banks children and proceeds to put things right with the aid of her rather extraordinary magical powers.

THE HOBBIT: THE DESOLATION OF SMAUG 3D & 2D Showing from: Fri 13 Dec The phenomenal success of Peter Jackson’s The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey in 2012 makes The Desolation of Smaug probably the most eagerly awaited film of the holiday season, and it doesn’t disappoint. Martin Freeman is back as the nervy adventurer Bilbo Baggins. Having braved the treacherous journey back to Laketown, it’s up to Bilbo to honour his contract with the Dwarves and find the secret door in Lonely Mountain that will reveal the lair of Smaug the dragon, played by Freeman’s Sherlock co-star Benedict Cumberbatch. With Cate Blanchett and Ian McKellen reprising their previous pivotal roles, and Evangeline Lilly and Orlando Bloom signed up to add extra weight to the evolving narrative, the adventure reaches thrilling new levels.

THE SECRET LIFE OF WALTER MITTY Showing from: Fri 26 Dec In his secret life, Walter Mitty (Ben Stiller) dreams big... really, really big. There’s no challenge beyond his grasp, be it climbing a massive glacier or rescuing a senior citizen from an exploding building. When he’s not daydreaming, the not-so-secret life of Walter Mitty is the opposite of his heroic alter-ego’s; he’s just an everyday guy facing imminent career downsizing, who’s too timid to ask out his co-worker (Kristen Wiig). But when Walter faces his ultimate real-world test, he springs into action on a global adventure exceeding anything even he could have dreamed of.
