“I’m interested in the parallel constructs of private and public space. The experience of intimacy and immensity interacting with and making form that dissolves and reoccurs simultaneously. I activate the surface and depth of images in my painting process, as well as the optics employed in lenticular media. Relating to landscape, location, and staging, I consider the ephemeral and transitory nature of both figuration and abstraction.”

- Mary Ann Strandell

Mary Ann Strandell’s paintings and 3-D lenticular prints occupy the territory between images and their multiple histories. Her paintings incorporate elements of modern and historic architecture, chandeliers, Asian-inspired ceramics, birds, and figurines to form a utopian environment seemingly in flux. In Strandell’s paintings movement is implicit but in her lenticular prints it becomes explicit. Strandell’s 3-D lenticular prints build on the visual complexity of her paintings and expand to a poetic reality on the edge of a comforting hallucination. Combining technical expertise and painter’s sensibility, Strandell is able to create a new art form that seems to physically hover and move between an ornate reality and sense of time. Strandell’s paintings and lenticular prints reconfigure and distill visual information into a fusion that feels new and fresh. The musical term Pop Baroque has found it’s visual counterpart in the work of Mary Ann Strandell. Strandell has received numerous awards, including a NEA Arts Midwest Fellowship in Painting, Geraldine R. Dodge Grant, an Artist in residence at The Bemis Center For Contemporary Art, and Art Omi International. Her work is included in the collections of the Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art, the Nerman Museum of Contemporary Art and the Spencer Museum, among others. She studied Psychology at Syracuse University, completed her BFA at The University of South Dakota, Vermillion; a Fellowship at Tamarind Institute, and her MA and MFA degrees are from the University of New Mexico, Albuquerque. She taught at the Kansas City Art Institute from 1996-1999, and went on to teach at Washington University in St. Louis before moving to New York City in 2002. She is currently an Adjunct Professor at Montclair State University, NJ.
