Adventure is the path of which love blooms between two aspiring souls. No trope chronicles the bond between two soulmates more than love stories. Justin and my love story began when we met through my cousin, Bobby, at the beach and strengthened as we welcomed our sweet son, Jacob, into the world several years later. Nine months after Jacob’s arrival, Justin and I journeyed to Gatlinburg, Tennessee, with my family to honor my late father’s memory and scatter his ashes in the city he loved so much. Ironically, this happened to be the second year in a row that my family embarked on this trip to honor my father while also having forgotten to bring my “father” along. About two hours into our five-hour-long trip, my mother realized we left my father–again–and quickly thought of a coverup story. She asked Justin when he was planning to propose. Keep in mind, my mother is as straightforward as the stairwell to heaven. Justin, however, came prepared with the ring he secretly purchased several months earlier and took this trip as an opportunity to open a new chapter in our lives. My mother, my sister, my Aunt Mary Catherine “MC,” Jacob, Justin and I on our trip decided to venture up to the top of Anakeesta–one of the tallest points in the city–to admire the view. Several hours of raging postpartum mood swings and hot flashes later, I decided I was done for the day and was going back to the cabin. Without missing a beat, Aunt MC told me she was going to buy me new shoes, so that my feet wouldn’t hurt, and I would continue the hike. Before I could object, she sprinted to the nearest boutique and bought the first pair of cute flats she could find. Sheepishly, I thanked her graciously and wore my new shoes the rest of the trip. When we finally arrived at Heart Twigloo at Vista Gardens, I actually said, “Hey, this would be a great place to propose.” Little did I know how accurate I actually was. Justin and I waited our turn to get a picture taken and right as I turned to look at the view, he dropped to one knee and asked me the question I’d dreamt of hearing most all of my life. Saying I was shocked would have been the understatement of the decade. I was so surprised and happy that when I finally blurted out my answer, I accidentally gave my right hand instead of my left for Justin to slide my “ring by spring” onto my finger. This proposal that my family all helped pull off will forever be my second favorite surprise–only after my tiny, blond-haired little boy, who is currently singing a remix of “Old MacDonald Had a Farm” and “Jesus Loves Me” as I’m writing to you all. In this issue, you all will read about Homewood Life's 12 featured couples and their love stories. No matter how intricate or cliche, each story is unique, and what I hope will renew in you all a fondness for adventuring in love. Love on, readers!

How did your spouse propose?

He took me to our church (Homewood Cumberland Presbyterian) and got down on one knee at the top of the steps. Perfect moment!

He asked me to get out our car and go to the office with him. There was music playing, and he told me to look up at the marquee that used to be over downtown. Saw the proposal there.

She said, “Let’s be the change we want to see in the world.” I said, “Yes.” We were married under the Brooklyn Bridge.

On the rooftop of the Omni Royal Orleans in the French Quarter!

He surprised me at work, disguised as a patient from a motor vehicle accident. When I placed the pulse oximeter on his finger, I saw the ring and then his grin!

My high school sweetheart proposed to me by the Riverwalk in San Antonio five years after our first date. We will be married 20 years this July.

IN HARMONY

Music is not only a universal language, but it is also the catalyst for harmony among cultures. BY ANNA GRACE MOORE PHOTOS BY KELSEA SCHAFER HomewoodLife.com 15

16 Spring 2024

M

Music is a universal language that is so profound– even the most polarizing cultures rest on what sliver of common ground it provides: A way for the heart to express what words sometimes cannot. Where humans fall short in communication, they make up in beautiful harmony. Some of the world’s greats–Mozart, Jimi Hendrix, Antonio Vivaldi–understood that learning both to play and to teach music was to unify people–to create positive change in a broken world. Even today, music is the most popular cultural phenomenon that is ever-evolving, always in tune with every new generation to come. Founded in 2012 by renowned guitarists and instructors, Allen Barlow and Rob Gannon, the Homewood School of Music aims to raise the next generation of musicians by effectively teaching such language–more of a ministry, itself–to students young and old, anyone that will take a chance and pick up a pick. Allen first picked up a guitar when he was 11 years old. He was selt taught for five years before he received a gift certificate for guitar lessons, which is how he met Rob. Rob was professionally trained at the Musicians Institute in Los Angeles, California. At the time, Rob ventured cross country to teach at Band Stand Music, and although that school has since retired its services, Rob’s time there propelled him to pursue a career in teaching his passion– guitar. After teaching there, Rob was later recruited in the early ‘90s to teach at Fretted Instruments in Homewood, where he built a reputation as one of the finest guitar instructors in Birmingham. “As far as teaching music, I find it very rewarding,” Rob says. “I always love seeing my students have those ‘aha’ moments. Seeing their confidence grow as they progress always makes my day.” Meanwhile, Allen says he had some growing up to do. After taking a gap year, Allen enrolled at the University of Montevallo as an undeclared major at 21 years old. During this time, he got his first teaching job as a guitar instructor at The Music Station in Pelham. Allen began taking an accounting course, but he actually ditched his very first accounting class to go

to Lollapalooza. There, he witnessed musical history being made as bands such as Pearl Jam, Soundgarden and the Red Hot Chili Peppers swept the stage. Allen says it may have taken him a few years to “find himself,” but what brought clarity to him was the way music spoke to him like no one ever could. Upon returning to school, Allen quickly switched majors to study music. “When someone learns music, they learn a skill that can connect them with others around the world,” Bailey Hill, Homewood School of Music mandolin instructor, says. “The communication, empathy, storytelling and experiences that music provides outside of being strictly a discipline in performance is an excellent way for folks to learn from one another to make our world a more peaceful place.” When Allen graduated at 25 years old, he had only been teaching for three years, and yet, he already had 45 students. Rob soon learned of his protégée’s success and recruited him to work at Fretted Instruments, where Allen acquired an additional 35 students upon arrival. To Allen’s surprise, the majority of his students stayed on with him, and some still take guitar lessons from him today. Allen and Rob worked alongside Herb Trotman, Ricky Stone and David Walbert–the founders of Fretted Instruments–for more than a decade before the dynamic duo ventured out on their own to create a music school whose focus was to create a hub for community. In 2012, Allen and Rob founded the Homewood School of

Why do you love teaching? “Music is a language and a beautiful one, and teaching music is all about connection and expression. Everyone has the potential to be creative, and most have the desire to express it. I love being the person that helps others unwrap that.” -Sabina Barton, piano instructor "Understanding music allows you to tap into other cultures and understand the universal human experience on a very deep level.” -Bailey Hill, mandolin instructor “Teaching music has been important to me because it helps keep me in touch with the state of a ‘beginner’s mind.’ That seems to be important to keeping one’s perspective fresh when doing something challenging and meaningful for many years.” -Michael Glaser, drums instructor

Music, and over the last 12 years, the school have grown to include 18 more professionally trained musicians who teach an array of instruments including guitar, bass, piano, voice, drums, violin, brass, woodwinds, orchestral strings, music theory and more. The school now boasts a roster of more than 400 students and is one of the most successful music schools in Birmingham. Some big dogs in music such as Grammy-nominated artist Sam Hunt, Jeffrey Harper (guitarist for Scotty McCreery), Matthew Mayfield, Will Mason (Mason Music), Lee Bains (Lee Bains and The Glory Fires), Levi Watkins (The Voice) and Luke Black (Mountain Grass Unit) are proud protégées of Rob and Allen, and the list is ever-growing. Although seeing their former pupils become so successful is inspiring, both Allen and Rob agree that their purpose is to teach music–to spread a ministry where people can freely express themselves and feel as though they, too, are loved, cherished and understood. “Teaching is like a form of ministry,” Allen says. “We try to recruit teachers that understand what the bigger picture is. It’s not just clocking in and talking music. It’s about building relationships.” One of Allen’s most memorable teaching moments came not at a high, but at an all-time low as a friend to another in need. One of Allen’s students came into his lesson downtrodden, saying his brother had a terrible injury. Instead of watching the clock or avoiding uncomfortable

topics, Allen engaged, listening to his student and figuring out how to help him grieve. What better way to grieve than to let one’s heart sing? The two jammed to one of the student’s favorite musicians, Van Halen, for an hour, and the student left feeling hopeful–an emotion he wasn’t sure he’d feel again. “Not all great musicians are teachers, and not all great teachers are musicians,” Rob says. “We’re lucky to have both.” Strolling down the halls at the Homewood School of Music, one will hear the classics such as Beethoven and Led Zeppelin, amidst the cheers and high fives shared between teachers and students alike. What makes this school so special is that students enjoy coming to learn because they are valued and appreciated, no matter what stage they’re at. “Learning music exposes students to a wide range of emotions that will shape who they are as people,” Katelyn Hoag, Homewood School of Music violin instructor, says. “It is important to pass on these life lessons music teaches to the next generation.” Allen says the Homewood School of Music is relatively young in terms of the school, but he hopes to continue recruiting the best musicians and teachers in Birmingham years from now. His goal is for the Homewood School of Music to continue fostering a culture of inclusion among all people groups for years to come. Perhaps if everyone treated music with such appreciation, the world would indeed finally be in harmony. Best Adult Reads Recommendations from

Laura Tucker

Administration Librarian, Homewood Public Library

Laura Tucker has worked at the Homewood Public Library since 2014. She used to spend her days as the Head of Children’s Services, and she now works behind the scenes as the Administration Librarian. Laura loves to bake (and eat baked goods), walk her dog (and sit around petting her dog) and listen to audiobooks (as well as a lot of podcasts and music). Here are her five recommendations for adult nonfiction books.

How to Do Nothing: Resisting the Attention Economy

By Jenny Odell | Social Sciences The increasing pace of one’s life combined with the constant barrage of information can make it feel as though one is on a hamster wheel most days–constantly working but not getting anywhere. Odell explores the inherent value of doing nothing in a world where productivity and keeping busy are glorified. Through practical exercises and insightful anecdotes, she challenges her readers to question their need for constant entertainment and engagement.

Sure, I’ll Join Your Cult

By Maria Bamford | Memoir Maria Bamford is a stand-up comedian who excels at brutally honest and awkward comedy. In her new memoir, she chronicles her journey of trying to find a place to belong from Overeaters Anonymous to Debtors Anonymous to every group in between. One of Laura’s favorite things to read is a celebrity/ famous person’s memoir. She believes Bamford does a great job of combining humor and tragic circumstances with this memoir of mental illness.

Ways of Being: Animals, Plants, Machines - The Search for a Planetary Intelligence by James Bridle

By James Bridle | Animal Behavior & Communication This book grapples with what it means to be intelligent. Is it something only humans can be, or is it something that surrounds us in animals, plants and natural systems all around? James Bridle uses biology, philosophy, literature, art and physics to help answer this question. As the race to construct and analyze artificial intelligence ramps up, Bridle’s analysis of the natural world is fascinating. Bridle believes people should look “beyond the horizon of [their] own selves and [their] own creations to glimpse another kind, or many different kinds, of intelligence.”

The Extended Mind: The Power of Thinking Outside the Brain

By Annie Murphy Paul | Philosophy “The Extended Mind” encourages readers to think outside the brain by engaging with their bodies, their physical spaces and the minds of other people around them. By extending their minds in this way, they can focus better, comprehend more knowledge and inhabit more creativity. Humans have long known about the mind/body connection, and Annie Murphy Paul does a great job of pinpointing how something as simple as one’s gestures can impact his thinking, feeling and even his memories, too.

What’s for Dessert: Simple Recipes for Dessert People

By Claire Saffitz | Cookbooks This collection of recipes includes cakes, pies, cookies, bars and more! Claire Saffitz’s recipes are easy to follow and unique. She streamlines the processes and uses tools that most people have in their kitchen (no stand mixer required) to make them more approachable. As much as Laura enjoys baking and sweets, she also loves looking at recipes and pictures of food and desserts that she wants to eat. This cookbook has beautiful, retro-style photos of unique and delicious desserts that will make every reader’s mouth water. HomewoodLife.com 23

THE CASTRO'S CANTINA Authenticity has no rival when it comes to cuisine at the newly reopened Cantina Tortilla Grill. BY ANNA GRACE MOORE PHOTOS BY UNTOLD IMAGERY HomewoodLife.com 25

26 Spring 2024

T

The best blessings often come in disguises. Aimee Castro, co-owner of Sol Y Luna Tapas and Tequilas and now, Cantina Tortilla Grill, says that life often throws some crazy curveballs. However, with a little persistence and a positive attitude, one can hit a home run. The New Orleans native had just finished college at Loyola University New Orleans when Hurricane Katrina struck. This curveball in particular hit a lot of people hard. Aimee decided instead of staying in town that she would venture out on her own and see where life would take her. Not knowing Spanish or ever having studied the language, Aimee took a chance and enrolled at at Bridge Linguatec–an immersion school in Argentina whose instructors did not teach or speak in English to students trying to learn Spanish. After finishing school, Aimee moved to Birmingham. One of her first jobs in town was as a server at then-popular Birmingham restaurant, Los Angeles. It was there that she met her husband, Jorge Castro, whose brother, Guillermo Castro, spearheaded the family business and opened six, different restaurants across Birmingham, including Los Angeles. Aimee went back to school at UAB and earned her second bachelor’s degree—this one in Spanish. She says she studied French in high school and at Loyola, but learning a new language and diversifying her skill set excited her. Little did she know how much Latin American culture would influence her life. Once she received her bachelor’s degree, Aimee stayed on at UAB to earn her master’s degree in education with a focus on teaching ESL students. Even after graduating, she fell in love with Birmingham—Homewood specifically. “I’ve always liked Homewood,” Aimee says. “When I was working on my master’s, I had a fellowship with UAB and started teaching at Homewood High School.” Aimee also quickly fell in love with Jorge, and the two tied the knot in 2009. Not long after did Aimee graduate and begin teaching Spanish in the Birmingham City Schools district. She very quickly learned to juggle working full-time as a teacher and in the Castro family’s restaurant business. Just when Aimee felt things might be smooth sailing, life threw another rough curveball. HomewoodLife.com 27

Guillermo suffered a heart attack and passed away unexpectedly in 2011. At the time, the Castro family owned five restaurants in town. They consolidated down to just two after Guillermo’s passing, Sol Y Luna Tapas and Tequilas and Cantina Tortilla Grill. Sol Y Luna was open from 1998-2013, and when it closed, both Jorge and Aimee searched all over Birmingham for the right place to reopen. Cantina Tortilla Grill, on the other hand, was open from 2003-2019 in Pepper Place, and when the business’ landlords decided not to renew the lease, Jorge and Aimee were left wondering, “What’s next?” Both of their restaurants had now shut their doors for the foreseeable future. It wasn’t until the Lane Parke development was built and offered up the perfect place for an upscale restaurant that the Castros decided to reopen Sol Y Luna. The restaurant opened its doors on Feb. 10, 2020, but by March 13, 2020, the business had gone to only take-out orders in the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic. If Aimee had learned anything about curveballs by then, she says it would be to put on a brave face and find another way. Thanks to the generous support of the Mountain Brook community, Sol Y Luna stayed open and thrived. The business’s success led the Castros to feel as though it was the right time to reopen Sol Y Luna’s sister restaurant, Cantina Tortilla Grill. The only question was where to open. In September 2022, Little London, whose iconic, red, double decker bus

stayed parked in front of the restaurant, closed its doors. Aimee heard the news, and she and Jorge came out to look at the location, which was exactly what they were looking for. “We found this spot, and it had so much charm in the cute, little neighborhood that is West Homewood,” Aimee says. “It has so much character.” The Castros worked for nearly a year after leasing the property to get Cantina Tortilla Grill into shape. In August 2023, they reopened the restaurant after nearly four years of searching for the right time and place. According to the business’s website, “Cantina Tortilla Grill has been serving up made-fresh-daily Mexican food in a laid-back, fun atmosphere since 2003. The uniquely crafted menu items follow the recipes created by our founder Guillermo Castro, whose love for travel and a passion for fresh Mexican food came together to influence every aspect of the restaurant.” Strolling into Cantina, one first notices the bubblegum pink bar–fit with bottles sporting names such as Hornitos Plata–tequila made 100-percent from blue agave. Customers order at the bar and are immediately served their drink, so they never wait for their beverages while also

waiting on their meals. They can choose from any one of Cantina’s wholesome wooden tables–each designed and decorated to fit the quaint, laid-back atmosphere. Aimee says Cantina’s intentional design contributes to the aesthetic appeal of the restaurant. Although the drinks and the decor are second-tonone, what makes Cantina stand alone in terms of authenticity is, of course, any one of the delectable dishes. The tacos are all à la carte. Those who loved Cantina’s cuisine in 2003 will be happy to learn that the menu hasn’t changed–the same, high quality food (with a few new dishes) are still available. The original fish tacos, which consist of eggwashed Tilapia filets, slaw, avocado, cilantro mayo and chile de arbol salsa, are a longtime favorite. Paired with a prickly pear margarita, the churrasco steak, which is served with saffron rice, refried beans, queso fresco and pico de gallo, makes for a great dinner. “There is something for everyone,” Aimee says. Children love the cantina quesadillas or nachitos, and even the most picky eaters will find one of the tacos locos to enjoy. Aimee recommends for customers dining on their lunch break to try the taco Cubano, which has roasted pork shoulder, manchego cheese, pickles and cilantro mayo. It’s a

light lunch that can be paired with any one of the menu’s tasty sides, such as frijol de olla or garlic home fries. The real homerun on the menu, however, is the desserts. The vanilla flan, which is served with Kahlua liquor and strawberries, will make anyone’s taste buds tingle. The churros and lemon tres leches are also great choices. Looking back on the last 20 years, Aimee says some of the curveballs she was thrown—navigating life after Hurricane Katrina, going back to school and changing careers, losing a loved one and being business owners during the pandemic—all guided her exactly where she needed to be. She may never have met Jorge if she hadn’t taken a chance and come to Birmingham, and now, the two have been married for 14 years and have a precious, 1.5-year-old son. Life is funny that way. It hardly ever goes the way one wants it to, but take a page out of Aimee’s book: Persistence and a positive attitude will eventually help one hit her homerun and bring her where she wants to be. FIVE QUESTIONS FOR

Angie Mosier

Creative Director, Pihakis Restaurant Group PHOTO BY HERO DOUGHNUTS & BUNS

HERO Doughnuts’ first store opened in 2017 in Homewood, Alabama, at the corner of Central Avenue and Oxmoor Road. Founder Wil Drake had been creating delicious, brioche doughnuts with inventive toppings and fillings and selling them at “pop-ups” around town. Wil and Pihakis Restaurant Group founder Nick Pihakis started scheming what a robust, fast-casual “HERO” location could look like, and since then, the brand has grown from that original, tiny shop to nine locations in four states. Here, Angie Mosier, Creative Director for Pihakis Restaurant Group, details the HERO recipe for success. HERO Doughnuts has become a staple in the Homewood community. What specific menu items best represent the “HERO” brand? The OG Glazed Doughnut is a light, handmade brioche dough that is mixed, proofed, punched and proofed again in a two-day process before being fried and glazed with housemade vanilla glaze. It’s the classic that started it all. The HERO Burger, which is a griddled patty sprinkled with salt, is another staple. It has a delicious, thin crust on the beef, paired with griddled onions, cheese and Wil’s special, “cracked sauce” (a savory black pepper sauce), and it is a top-seller.

because folks don’t realize that we have full breakfast plates, specialty coffee drinks, burgers, chicken–both grilled and fried, incredible salads and of course, doughnuts. We recently shifted the name to be simply, “HERO,” because we are an all day, every day modern stop for breakfast, lunch, coffee and brunch.

What is HERO’s recipe for success? We have adopted a phrase within Pihakis Restaurant Group that is “Pihakis– Food With People” because everything we do has to do with people. Keeping that in mind is the definition of success to us.

What is your favorite menu item and why? With so many similar businesses in the According to Wil, his go-to meal at HERO area, what about HERO makes this would be the SuperCrunch. Forever Florals Second only to the bride, the most beautiful part of any wedding is the flowers. Floral arrangements carry such a sentimentality that physically showcases the vision of any bride’s desired palette, stylistic choices and decorum. Here, Sasha Johns, managing partner of Amazing Flowers and Occasions, reveals just how her arrangements helped bring to life the wedding vision of her clients and friends, Kaitlyn and Roderick Anderson. Happy Couple

Sasha had the thrill of any florist’s career–designing gorgeous florals for her family friend’s wedding. Sasha first met the happy couple, Kaitlyn and Roderick Anderson, through Kaitlyn’s mother, Suzanne. The two friends go back nearly 15 years, and Sasha says this has been one of her most favorite events.

The Details Sasha utilized ivory and peach garden roses; pink, ivory and white stock; periwinkle delphinium; and yellow and peach ranunculus. She added in bits of greenery including green dragon, olive branches and both silver dollar and seeded eucalyptus into Kaitlyn’s bouquet and the ceremony’s standing arrangements.

Olexa's

Diane Olexa’s love for beautiful pastry art grew as she did–watching her mother bake. At only age 23, Diane created her first-ever wedding cake for her college roommate in 1993. She started out creating one or two wedding cakes a week. She began creating cakes for her friends and her loved ones’ weddings, and in 1996, she extended her business to include event catering with her mother’s expertise to officially create the Olexa’s brand. Eight years later, Olexa’s following accumulated so much that Diane decided to open the business’s first brick and mortar in 2004 in quaint Mountain Brook Village. A 30-year veteran of the wedding industry, Diane says this business is special because of the memories she’s able to help create for her customers. Olexa’s today creates upwards of 200 birthday and wedding cakes a week, all while catering events and operating its intimate dining setting for guests six days a week. Here, she gives her thoughts on one of her favorite events at Olexa’s Catering, Cafe and Cakes–a romantic rehearsal dinner for her friends, Kinsey and Anderson Gore. PHOTOS BY SIDNEY SMITH PHOTOGRAPHY & CONTRIBUTED

Memories intoMeals Diane and mother-of-the-groom, Abby Gore, have been family friends since college. As Abby was planning the rehearsal dinner for her son, Anderson, she mentioned to Diane that Anderson loves chicken with alfredo sauce. Diane created the menu, incorporating Anderson’s favorite meal that added to the special night before the wedding.

Pictured is Diane Olexa and Anderson Gore.

HOW DID YOU TWO MEET? Matt and I met several years ago when we were both sophomores in college. I went to Samford, and Matt went to UAB. We were both involved in the college ministry at Briarwood Presbyterian Church, and over the years, we became friends. However, we didn’t start dating until the fall of 2020.

Bank Stationery: Fine Paperwork DJ/Wedding Band: Wayne Ingram

THE PROPOSAL Matt proposed to me at a bench on Jemison Trail–one of our favorite places to walk together. He picked me up after work, claiming we were going on a little walk to kill time before our dinner reservations. Once we started walking, however, I realized something was up when we came to a bench surrounded by flowers. He had put together a beautiful box with some pictures from our relationship and a letter he had written for me (that I now have framed on my nightstand). After proposing, he surprised me with a little party put together by my sister and family at my parents' home. WEDDING DRESS DETAILS I had an amazing experience at Carriage House Weddings when looking for my wedding dress. Matt and I were only engaged for six months, so I knew I would have a quick turnaround time for finding a dress. I ended up choosing one that was totally different than what I thought I would pick. The classic silhouette and train on my dress were the details that drew me to it. WEDDING PLANNING ADVICE My main advice for brides planning their wedding is to remember that even though the process can be busy and overwhelming at times, you want this day to be something that is special to you and your husband since it is a day celebrating you two.

HOW DID YOU TWO MEET? A few of my friends and I went to Moe’s BBQ in Lakeview to watch the Iron Bowl. I was standing at the bar with my friends, getting ready to order a drink. All of the sudden, someone took my hat off. The rest is history. It truly was such a brave move by Corey.

THE PROPOSAL Corey and I were headed to my parents' lake house for the weekend, but he informed me that we were going to a very fancy restaurant for our anniversary first. On the way, I noticed that Corey took the turn to my lake house instead of continuing into downtown Cullman. He told me we were going to drop our bags off first. As we pulled up, I noticed candles leading all the way down to the top of our boat dock. We walked up to the very top, and he got down on one knee. It was the most beautiful and meaningful proposal, considering that it is our favorite place to spend time together. WEDDING DRESS DETAILS I wanted a dress that was truly timeless. I wanted the classic look that I could look back on years later and still consider beautiful. I also wanted sleeves to channel my inner Kate Middleton. WEDDING PLANNING ADVICE Ask and accept help. I never want to burden others with my business, and I look back and think about all the opportunities I had to ask for help. People love helping with weddings, so let them.

THE PROPOSAL He found “the perfect spot” atop Aberdeen Road, only to realize it was someone’s yard. So, he took down the address, wrote the homeowners a letter and received their approval on Christmas Eve. A few weeks later, we took a drive at dusk. Overlooking the city’s twinkling lights and surrounded by candles, Spencer knelt down and asked me to marry him. I said yes, then lied when he asked if I was crying. WEDDING DRESS DETAILS The sample fit me perfectly–that seemed like a sign from the divine. HOW DID YOU TWO MEET? Two of my college friends happened to live in Jake’s neighborhood. One of my friends told me, “Emily, you have to come and visit me, so you can meet this guy named Jake. Y’all are perfect for each other!” After a few weeks, I made my way to Birmingham for a visit. We ordered pizza and hung out on the back porch, which eventually turned into a night of dancing and singing karaoke. THE PROPOSAL Jake told me he was taking me for a detour to see a house with a great view of the city. We pulled into the driveway, got out of the car and I immediately saw candles, flowers and champagne. He walked me to the beautifully decorated porch and said so many sweet things (that I cannot remember), prayed over me and asked me to marry him. After I said yes, we drove to his parents' house, where all of our closest friends and family were there to celebrate with us. Second only to our wedding day, it was the best day of my life! WEDDING DRESS DETAILS I fell in love with all of the details of my dress. The blush undertone, lace detailing and the sweetheart neckline paired with the low-cut back made the dress absolutely stunning. WEDDING PLANNING ADVICE My number one piece of advice is to hire a wedding planner that you love and trust–one that you are compatible with and who understands your vision. This makes wedding planning so much fun, and in my opinion, it's something you must fit into the budget.

Allie + Cory MAY 6, 2023 PHOTOS BY AL WEDDINGS

70 Spring 2024

HOW DID YOU TWO MEET? My best friend’s husband, Scott, works with Cory. Scott and Meredith had Cory over for dinner one night, and halfway through the dinner, she was texting me, saying I just had to meet Cory. A few weeks later, we all went on a double date.

THE PROPOSAL When our church service was over, my parents jumped up and said, “See you at the house!” They ran out the door. That was a little odd. I didn’t think too much of it. We were then stopped by our preacher as we were walking towards the door, and he started asking us all kinds of questions to stall us for a few minutes. We finally made our way to the car and to my parents' house. I jumped out of the car, grabbed my change of clothes and headed towards the back door of the house. All of a sudden, Cory stopped me and grabbed my hand. He led me out to the back yard, got down on one knee and asked me to marry him. I was totally surprised! After he put the ring on my finger, he told me my cousin, who was hiding behind us taking pictures, and our families were inside the house, watching this happen. We walked up to the back porch and celebrated with all of them. WEDDING DRESS DETAILS The bow on the back was my favorite part! I loved that I could remove it for a different look at the reception. The neckline and bodice of the dress made me feel so elegant, and I was so comfortable all day. WEDDING PLANNING ADVICE Turn to your family, friends or planner when you’re feeling overwhelmed and ask for help. At the end of the planning, you get to marry your best friend and start your life together as one, and that is what really matters. HomewoodLife.com 71

HOW DID YOU TWO MEET? Payton and I met at La Paz in Mountain Brook in June 2021, and we both knew very early on that we wanted to spend our lives together.

the details Ceremony & Reception Venue: The Farrell Wedding Planner/Day Of Coordinator: Engaged Wedding Library Florist: Susan Milner Design Caterer: The Happy Catering Co. Cake: Debbie Easterling Wedding Dress: Ivory & White Bridal Boutique Bridal Hair/ Makeup: Holly Craft Bridesmaid Dresses: Bella Bridesmaids Groom’s Attire: Mr. Burch Formal Wear Stationery: Fine Paperwork DJ/Wedding Band: Southern City Lights

THE PROPOSAL One of our favorite places to spend the summers is at my parents' house at Lake Martin, so Payton decided that it would be the perfect place to propose. He and I took a long boat ride, and he proposed in front of the Wicker Point Golf Course. It was just the two of us, and it was perfect. WEDDING DRESS DETAILS I knew I wanted something simple and timeless. I also wanted to be able to look back at wedding photos with our grandkids and still love it. After trying on several dresses, my sister-in-law and my mom convinced me to try on a beautiful strapless dress, and the rest was history. Not only did I feel like myself, but I also felt like a bride. WEDDING PLANNING ADVICE My biggest piece of advice is to try not to get too stressed out with all the small details. There will be vendors, family members and guests asking you lots of questions throughout the process; however, keep your focus on the most important part, the marriage, and everything else will fall into place.

Liza + Jackson JUNE 3, 2023 PHOTOS BY LIZ ALLISON

76 Spring 2024

HOW DID YOU TWO MEET? We both grew up in Tuscaloosa but never really knew each other until my senior year at Samford. We kept running into each other everywhere, so Jackson cold called me during the summer of 2020 and asked me on a date. The rest is history!

the details Ceremony Venue: Covenant Presbyterian Church Reception Venue: The Florentine Wedding Planner/ Day Of Coordinator: Jane Dickens Events & Will West Florist: Ray Jordan with Flower Buds Caterer: Corretti Catering Cake: Corretti Catering Wedding Dress: Lady in Lace Bridal Hair/Makeup: Katie Gurley & Sarah Christian Bridesmaid Dresses: Lady in Lace Stationery: Paper Eliza DJ/Wedding Band: Bizz & Everyday People Transportation: Rare Transportation Wedding Night Accommodations: The Elyton Hotel

THE PROPOSAL Jackson wanted to keep the proposal a surprise so badly that he only told our immediate families the day before. I was convinced it was never going to happen, and on the day we got engaged, I wore no makeup and didn’t even wash my hair. We went on a walk in the Birmingham Botanical Gardens, which is one of our favorite things to do, and Jackson proposed! That night we celebrated over an intimate dinner. We had a party with family and friends the following evening. WEDDING DRESS DETAILS I went into Lady in Lace fully intending to buy a different dress, but when I tried this one on, I just fell in love. I loved the cathedral length, buttons down the back and off-the-shoulder draping. WEDDING PLANNING ADVICE Use planning as an opportunity to grow closer with your fiancé. It’s such a sweet time to learn more about each other and lean into planning your lives together after the wedding. Keeping your eyes on what your planning for–a future together–makes the more stressful moments feel worthwhile.

HOW DID YOU TWO MEET? Our story began before we were born and continues to be a sweet reminder of how faithful the Lord is when writing our story. It goes back to the early ‘90s when both of our grandfathers were in business together and became friends. It wasn’t until 2019, where the real connection started between the two of us, and we began to learn that our family had known each other for quite some time. We officially met each other through mutual friends in September 2019, and it didn’t take long for us to realize the family connection. We still laugh to this day, thinking about the amount of times we had probably been around each other as young kids but never crossed paths again until 15 years later. THE PROPOSAL My family took a beach trip the weekend of Mother’s Day in May 2022. Griffin made it seem as though he could not come. My parents made reservations for dinner one night and told me we were going to take family pictures on the beach before going to dinner. Once we got on the beach to take pictures, I saw Griffin standing with flowers, waiting for me to walk down the beach. WEDDING DRESS DETAILS My dress had a 3D floral applique on the top with a simple fitted bottom. I searched online to see who carried the designer, and it just so happened that Ivory and White carried the exact dress I was looking for. WEDDING PLANNING ADVICE Engagement season is such a special time to enjoy with all your family and friends coming together to celebrate! Planning a wedding can be stressful and overwhelming, but at the end of the day, all the small details don’t compare to the lifetime of happiness that begins on your wedding day. Samantha + Logan JUNE 23, 2023 PHOTOS BY ERIC & JAMIE PHOTOGRAPHY

80 Spring 2024

HOW DID YOU TWO MEET? Logan and I met in high school at Homewood High School. I saw him for the first time when he was playing in a basketball game for the varsity team. My friends and I thought he was super cute, and I ended up reaching out to him after the game. It then became a habit to always go to the basketball games and say something to him after the games. The Homewood basketball team won state that year, and I got to hand out the trophies to all of the players, including him. We also had our first kiss that night.

THE PROPOSAL Our proposal was so sweet. Logan and I had been doing long distance while I was in school at Samford University, and he was in New York City at Manhattan College. It was the night before my birthday, and I thought I was going to dinner with all of my friends and going to take pictures at Vulcan for our last week of college. Turns out, Logan had flown into Alabama the night before to surprise me at Vulcan with a blanket, champagne and flowers at the exact same spot that we first said, ‘I love you.” WEDDING DRESS DETAILS When I put my wedding dress on for the first time, I fell in love with how flattering it was with the split leg and asymmetrical ruching. Those details combined with the strapless top and off-the-shoulder dropped sleeves were perfect together. I loved having small details that accentuated the dress’s clean, simple and elegant style. WEDDING PLANNING ADVICE I definitely recommend having a maid of honor, bridesmaids and a wedding planner, who are all encouraging and helpful. My bridesmaids did so much to help me in the process, especially the day of my wedding. HomewoodLife.com 81

HOW DID YOU TWO MEET? I had recently moved in with my sister’s family in Greenville, South Carolina, from Birmingham after accepting a job offer in the area. While in Greenville, I was introduced to Travis through my brother-in-law, Nick, and we immediately hit it off! I knew that if Nick thought highly of Travis, he must be an amazing guy. My first thoughts of Travis were that he was incredibly kind, funny and easygoing. After our initial meeting, Travis asked me to dinner, and I was so thrilled! THE PROPOSAL I went to the University of Alabama, and Travis told me that he wanted to go to Tuscaloosa for a football game with me since I don’t get to go as often anymore. The morning of the game as we started to head that way, Travis pulled over to Sybil Temple in Vestavia Hills because he said he wanted to look at the view. As soon as we got to the top, I started noticing that the temple was beautifully decorated with flowers. The next thing I knew, Travis was on his knee! After the proposal, both of our families and my best friend came running up to us to congratulate us. WEDDING DRESS DETAILS Ever since I was a little girl, I always knew that I wanted to have a classic, Southern look to my wedding dress. As soon as I tried my dress on, I immediately knew that I had found the dress for me because it was exactly as I had always envisioned it would look like. The sweetheart neckline felt so feminine, and the ballgown style with the long train made me feel like an absolute princess. WEDDING PLANNING ADVICE Prioritize scheduling date nights to take a break from all of the planning, and just focus on each other. This will allow you to come back to the planning process refreshed and ready to go. HomewoodLife.com 83

Jenna + Jeb JUNE 27, 2023 PHOTOS BY AL WEDDINGS

84 Spring 2024

HOW DID YOU TWO MEET? Jeb and I knew of each other through mutual friends. We both knew the other liked to mountain bike, so I secretly hoped he would ask me to go biking with him. I went for a solo ride at Red Mountain Park one day, but it got rained out. I packed up, and as I started down the road, the sun came out once more. At this point, I was right across from Samford and planned to pull off on Lakeshore Trail and ride a few more miles. Jeb happened to be biking across the intersection! We waved at each other, and Jeb followed me as I pulled in. When I opened the back of my car, he was thrilled to see that I had my bike and was ready to ride.

THE PROPOSAL We went to get fruit bowls, and we walked around Homewood Park on a cold, drizzly day in November. I was wearing a special red dress because I had a feeling that this day might be the day he was going to propose! He started to read a wonderful poem he wrote and the prayer he prayed for his future wife. It was surreal. He got on one knee and asked me to marry him! After this, we watched an unbelievable sunset that seemed to say God was with us. WEDDING DRESS DETAILS The dress I ended up wearing was not what I planned. It was, however, the exact dress I always loved and dreamed of wearing as a little girl. When I went to try on dresses, I thought I wanted some sparkle and other details, but I changed my mind once I put this one on. I chose it because it was timeless, classy and simple. WEDDING PLANNING ADVICE Don’t waste your energy trying to make the “right decision” on all of the details. Know your general likes and dislikes and trust the vendors! It really helps alleviate decision fatigue and makes the process more fun and exciting. HomewoodLife.com 85

HOW DID YOU TWO MEET? Andrew and I have known each other basically our whole lives. Our dads have been business partners and best friends since before we were born. Every summer, we would take a lake trip with both of our families. Andrew and I always got along so well and became really good friends. It wasn’t until the summer after I graduated from college that things changed. After the lake trip, we stayed in touch more than we ever had in the past. Andrew went from my friend to my best friend, and then he became the person I wanted to spend the rest of my life with. THE PROPOSAL Andrew proposed at the church he grew up in, Trinity United Methodist Church. Andrew’s mom works at Trinity, so when he said that we needed to go grab something she had left there on our way to dinner one night, I didn’t think anything of it. Trinity has a beautiful prayer garden that I had never been in before, so I was excited to see it when Andrew said that was where his mom’s AirPods were. I was looking around, taking in the view. When I turned towards Andrew, I saw that he was down on one knee. I was so shocked! WEDDING DRESS DETAILS My wedding dress was actually the first dress I tried on! I immediately fell in love with it and knew that it was probably going to be the one. As I tried on more dresses, it just confirmed that the first dress was the dress! WEDDING PLANNING ADVICE My biggest advice is to remember the reason for the season. The wedding planning process is so fun, but it can be overwhelming at times. If I ever felt like I was starting to stress, I would think about Andrew and the fact that what really matters is our marriage and starting our life together. HomewoodLife.com 87

‘Tis the season for weddings and romance! Whether you are getting engaged, planning a bridesmaids’ getaway, celebrating your own nuptials or marking an anniversary, there is a special destination for everyone.

HIT THE ROAD

PROPOSAL LOCATIONS Setting the tone for an engagement might often start with where the groom proposes to the bride. It could be where the couple had their first date or some other meaningful location—like the family ranch in Montana, where a groom hung the engagement ring on a nail on a tree, where he and his beloved enjoyed picnics. Many resort destinations relish being a part of a couple’s romantic future and offer whole proposal packages:

Photo courtesy of Sea Island The Lodge at Sea Island is a Forbes five-star, English-style country manor resort in Georgia that provides the perfect backdrop to any proposal (we’re thinking the rose petal bath butler service would be pretty nice)! As a special bonus, Sea Island invites previous honeymooners to save their receipts, and on the anniversary of their trip, pay the original rate on the first day of their stay. seaisland.com Amanyara, in the heart of an 18,000-acre nature reserve in Turks and Caicos, makes for a lush tropical setting, where the staff will arrange a “WILL YOU MARRY ME” sign in LED lights as you enjoy a private dinner in a secluded cove. The resort’s pavilions are situated in coastal vegetation and overlook the beaches of Northwest Point Marine Preserve—truly memorable! aman.com

BRIDESMAID & GROOMSMEN GETAWAYS After the proposal, the bride and groom will each secure their squad of bridesmaids and groomsmen, who will play a major part of the big day. Make plans to get away with these best friends and family for some serious memory-making. Hilton Head Health—The bride and her attendants can take a break from the hectic planning with a trip to coastal South Carolina for one of the destination’s wellness retreats, which includes spa time, self-care workshops, yoga and more. hhhealth.com Hollywood Farms—Gather your groomsmen and head to Hollywood Farms in Jeffersonville, Georgia, for a true sportsman’s getaway. Do a buyout of the antebellum site, or pick a weekend when Hollywood Farms is hosting a Fausti Shooting School or a bespoke quail or woodcock hunt. Chef Scottie Johnson will make every meal memorable, while the bourbon flows. hollywoodfarmsga.com

Andiamo Lodge—Just a short drive North from Birmingham to Mentone, Alabama, is Andiamo Lodge, a well-curated destination for those looking for a honeymoon destination closer to home. Owner Colleen Duffley dubs this a ‘lux-lodge’ experience, where attention to detail (think Frette linens and intimate concierge service) comes standard. andiamolodge.com

HONEYMOON SPOTS

Half-Mile Farm—This sister property to the venerable Old Edwards Inn in Highlands offers a quieter respite in the Western North Carolina mountains. His & Hers—A honeymoon can be the perfect time to set the tone for how a couple likes to travel. Fork & Leaf Travel, Inc. Owner and Certified Travel Associate Jenn Nix shared a unique trip she planned for a couple who like very different things for vacation. The couple both wanted a Costa Rican honeymoon. He wanted fly-fishing in the mountains, while she craved luxe spa time on the beach. Jenn booked them in a private residence near pristine fishing for the first half of the trip and then at the adults-only Jardin del Eden Boutique Hotel in Tamarindo for the second half. Suffices to say, both the bride and groom got everything they wanted from this vacation. forkandleaftravel.com jardindeleden.com The Blended Family Honeymoon— For those couples looking to include members of the wedding party in their honeymoon plans, Chatham Bars Inn on Cape Cod makes an ideal destination. Plan a private clambake on the 25-acre estate, or take the group whale-watching. The Inn’s Kids Crew program offers tons of activities for the younger crowd, while the adults engage in some coveted one-on-one time. chathambarsinn.com

MY HOMEWOOD REBEKAH HEWETT Owner of The Craft Kit Company

Sentimental Spots

Edgewood Elementary School My grandmother and grandfather, Anita and John Cowart, actually went to Edgewood when they were in elementary school. My grandmother lived on Broadway at the time. It’s so sweet to see my kids go to the same school they went to.

Eat Local

Pizzeria GM Pizzeria GM is my favorite spot in town–it’s perfect for a dinner with friends, date night or just a casual family meal! My favorite dish is the porchetta pizza from Pizzeria GM, unless it’s summer–then you have to go with their famous peach pizza!

Making Memories

Home Sweet Home Someone once referred to Edgewood as “front yard people,” and I can wholeheartedly agree. We have spent so many hours outside with friends who have become like family.

Fellowship in Community

Community Festivals I love Homewood’s love for a parade! Life is worth celebrating, and I think Homewood does it so well. The Christmas parade is such a fun and magical way to celebrate our community.

Get Outdoors

Highland Park We love the hidden gem of “Highland Park.” It’s the small, grassy area between Morris Boulevard and Oxmoor Road. One of my favorite memories in that park was a little neighborhood soccer league we created with neighbors, “West Side Soccer.” It started with a handful of kids and grew to more than 30 kids playing soccer, but it was really just fun chaos!
