A Message From President Scudder At this year’s graduation ceremony, 285 students placed their tassels to the left of their mortarboards signifying the end of their high school careers.

With the closing of the school year, we also celebrate new beginnings.

Graduates prepare for their next journey: college. One hundred percent of the Class of 2014 will attend colleges this fall. They will join incoming freshman classes at UCLA, Dartmouth, Northwestern and MIT, to name a few. They remain part of the SHC community as they join thousands of proud alumni.

Every summer, we replenish, renew and look to the future. Over the next several weeks at SHC, the hallways bustle with students participating in our Summer Institute courses. Construction crews work to complete phase two of our science facility renovation. On the heels of a successful accreditation year, faculty and staff prepare to implement our Educational Improvement Plan. Faculty and staff also continue to evaluate every program, class and space on campus in our quest to achieve excellence in all we do. Our development team plans for the 25th Annual Walkathon, a milestone year for SHC’s only student-driven fundraiser. Finally, more than 300 rising freshmen get ready to join the Class of 2018.

This issue of Second Century looks to the bright future ahead. It is clear from our record-breaking admissions cycle that young people want to grow spiritually, intellectually and emotionally at SHC. Students know they will find their place at the SHC family table, embraced by a loving community of learners.

FAreWell It is with gratitude and love that we bid farewell to Lois Gilliam.

Lois came to SHC as our De Paul Campus attendance officer 26 years ago. Eventually, she transitioned to the La Salle Campus main office where she served for the last decade. Lois is a San Francisco native with four children and eight grandchildren. Both her son, Hunter Gilliam ’88, and her granddaughter, Jessica Hontalas ’04, are proud SHC graduates. Prior to her time at SHC, she managed concessions at Candlestick Park. Throughout her tenure, Lois has touched the lives of our students, parents, faculty, staff and guests with her open heart and steady presence.

We wish her all the best in her retirement!

The Annual Spring Gala, An Evening in Paradise, raised more than $194,000 for our students this year. “The gala was an inspiring event that truly brought our entire community together with the common goal of supporting our students and school,” says President John f. scudder, Jr. ’73.

SUCCESS! SHC Renews Accreditation Status & Looks to the Future

his March, SHC was awarded “an unprecedented accreditation score,” as announced by the accreditation committee chair and Moreau Catholic Principal Lisa Tortorich. This validating declaration closed the enlightening 18-month self-study process for the SHC community.

What is accreditation? Essentially, accreditation is a method of quality assurance—a process that ensures adherence to a set of educational standards. “I loved every moment of it,” Natalie reflects upon her summer at the Medill-Northwestern High School Journalism Institute. Natalie’s experience at Northwestern last year affirmed her interest in the university, and she was accepted into their prestigious Medill School of Journalism through early decision.

When she travels to Chicago this fall, Natalie will bring her love of writing and deep sense of commitment to others, both of which were nurtured throughout her experience at SHC. “Catholicism teaches that loving other people needs to be at the bottom line of our actions. I will never place personal success in front of my obligations to other people.”

Natalie was named valedictorian for her academic achievement, cocurricular accomplishments and embodiment of SHC’s mission. She served as president of the Speech & Debate Club, head copy editor of The Emerald, played violin in the String Ensemble, and served as a Block Club officer.

Supported by the faith, commitment and drive SHC helped instill, Natalie faces her future with confidence. “I know I have a strong value system and a passion to tell stories. I can’t wait to combine the two.”

Martin Cazares

As an SHC Piro Scholar, Martin is incredibly grateful for the support of his mentors, Director of Student Support Angel-Max Guerrero and Counselor Rafael Ayala. “They were always there with anything I needed.”

Martin grew up in the Tenderloin, a place where educational opportunity is nearly inaccessible. Thanks to his supportive parents, he attended De Marillac Academy, SHC’s sister grammar school. “I realize now that my parents would have done anything to make sure I got into De Marillac and SHC because they knew I would get the best education.”

Emma Kuehl

’14

It was a summer reading assignment chronicling the life of physician and humanitarian Paul Farmer that inspired Emma’s academic path. “I was immediately inspired by Paul Farmer, and since then, I’ve set my mind to doing something that will benefit others.

To me, nursing is the best fit.” Emma will attend the University of Portland this fall, majoring in nursing.

At SHC, Emma played on the tennis team and was a member of Speech & Debate, Visual & Performing Arts Tech and Crew, Block Club and Student Council.

As she prepares for a demanding and rigorous course of study at the University of Portland, Emma feels strengthened by supportive SHC faculty. “Brother John Hoover, Dr. Musallam and Mr. Lim made a tremendous impact on my high school experience. They truly believed in me and what I was capable of doing academically. It is an incredible gift.”

As a registered nurse, Emma hopes to follow in the footsteps of Paul Farmer by serving in a developing nation.

During his final year at SHC, Martin enrolled in the Theology of Service class, a senior-level religious studies course that combined religious theories of social justice with community service. Martin gave his time to his alma mater, where he offered classroom support and served as a role model to young students. To future SHC Piro Scholars, he says, “Don’t give up. There will always be someone to support you and give you the confidence to succeed at SHC.” Martin will join the freshman class at San Francisco State University this fall, studying criminal justice.

“Enter to Learn, Leave to Serve, has taught me that I am not only here to be educated for my own good, but to be educated for the benefit of others. I can take what I have learned at SHC to benefit my friends, family and community.”

At SHC, Francis embodied our school motto as a member of Block Club and senior communications officer in Student Council. He was the recipient of the Caritas Award, which recognizes the graduate who manifested true Christian love by generously giving of himself to others. “In college, I hope to embody our school motto by partaking in community service opportunities and joining student government on campus.”

Claudia Rodriguez

’14

Claudia Rodriguez began her training in classical ballet at the age of four. This fall, her years of dedication will pay off when she attends The Ailey School, the official school of Alvin Ailey Dance Theater, on full scholarship.

Through a partnership between The Ailey School and Jesuit college Fordham University, Claudia will receive a robust education in both dance and liberal arts. She will double major in dance and psychology.

Claudia was a De Paul Scholar, sang in Choir, served on Student Council and as dance captain for several SHC Theatre productions. For her Senior Seminar Project, she choreographed and performed an exploration of memory through movement entitled, Summertime.

Claudia garners inspiration from dancers that break the traditional mold. Misty Copeland, the second AfricanAmerican dancer to perform solo for the American Ballet Theatre, ranks highest for Claudia. “She doesn’t have the classic ballerina physique and is a gorgeous dancer because of her differences.” As a young woman with Columbian and Peruvian roots, The Ailey School’s diverse program is a perfect fit. “I wanted to go to a college where people are accepting of all people. Often where you find diversity, you also find open minds.”

This fall, Francis will study public policy through an interdisciplinary major in communications, law, economics and government at American University in Washington, D.C. He hopes the knowledge he gains in college will help him contribute to his native San Francisco community. “I want to learn how to make an impact on San Francisco through policy and the creation of better urban spaces.”

Empowered Students, Transformed Lives

SHC’s Piro Program celebrates its 10th anniversary this year—a remarkable milestone in the program’s history. The Piro Program provides a Lasallian and Vincentian education to students in need, and aims to end the cycle of poverty one family at a time. Through significant tuition assistance and tremendous academic and personal support, Piro Scholars change the trajectory of their lives.

’s Piro Program pays tribute to its namesake, Sister Teresa Piro, DC, for her lifelong commitment to serving the vulnerable and the poor. As a Daughter of Charity, Sister Teresa Piro’s work honored the charism of

our Holy Founders, and ultimately, the Piro Program does the same.

The program simultaneously draws inspiration from the great work of St. John Baptist de La Salle, who dedicated his life to the education of the impoverished and neglected.

“Our Lasallian and Vincentian mission is really embodied in Piro Program counselors. Their support isn’t confined to their offices. They fulfill the roles of big brother and sister for all of our scholars by making themselves available every single day.” Guerrero emphasizes the value of a student-centered program model that allows for this level of supportive presence. “It’s important that our students experience a living relationship with us. They can count on us to be there for them.”

SHC’s 2014 graduating class included 18 Piro Scholars, 16 of which garnered acceptances to four-year universities, and two are slated to attend local community colleges in

the fall. Wilson shares, “My greatest wish for our graduates this year is that they continue to be inspired, work hard and make changes in their lives and the lives of their families.”

Incoming freshman Piro Scholars participate in a five-week summer program that prepares them for both the academic expectations and cultural shift that awaits them on the first day of class. Their summer curriculum includes physics, English, college information and the Piro Seminar. The seminar, modeled after the Saint Mary’s College High Potential Program, helps students transition into life at a Catholic, college preparatory high school.

“We want to help the Piro Scholars become master students in an environment in which they don’t typically see themselves,” says Ayala.

Nearly all Piro Scholars identify as first-generation, that is, children of immigrants and the first in their families to pursue a high school diploma and college education.

Throughout their four years at SHC, the Piro Program provides its scholars with school supplies, text books, lunch and cocurricular activity support to ensure a robust and rewarding high school experience. Piro Scholars participate in student organizations, athletic teams, visual and performing arts

and community service. They contribute to vibrant campus life.

Guerrero shares, “Piro students often surprise us with the level of success they achieve personally, academically and socially.”

College preparation begins early for Piro Scholars to build a strong foundation of knowledge around the application process. Their mandatory freshman study skills class includes college application information and allows students the time to connect with their teachers and receive homework support. The class takes place after the regular school day ends, giving Piro Scholars the distinction of the only students at their grade level to take seven classes.

Piro Scholar graduates move on to attend four-year universities, and as of this year, three Piro alumni are

working toward master’s degrees at Saint Mary’s College, University of the Pacific and Santa Clara University.

St. Vincent de Paul once said, “Extend your mercy towards others, so that there can be no one in need whom you meet without helping.” We are proud to honor our Vincentian and Lasallian tradition through the Piro Program. The 2014 Saint Mary’s National Champion Rugby Team featured three SHC alumni. Two alumnae competed in the Summer Olympic Games in London. Several players from SHC’s 2008 National Championship Girls Basketball Team concluded their stellar college careers over the past few years, gathering an impressive amount of Division I All-Conference honors along the way. The list goes on!

The next generation of collegebound Fightin’ Irish ready to add their names to that list is led by GeAnna Summers-Luaulu ’14 and Brett Rasso ’14, bound for the University of the Pacific and Saint Mary’s College, respectively.

Summers-Luaulu and Rasso signed letters of intent at a joint ceremony in the fall, the first of their class to formally accept offers from colleges.

Summers-Luaulu, the 2014 WCAL Co-Player of the Year, will continue to play basketball at UOP. Rasso, a standout football and baseball player at SHC, will return to the diamond with the Gaels next year.

Two of Rasso’s SHC football teammates will also make the jump to the college gridiron; Nico Dizon ’14 and Zhi’ir James ’14 both head to Menlo College.

“I will miss my teammates the

most,” says Summers-Luaulu. “And I’ll miss the biggest moment in high school for an SHC basketball player, the Bruce-Mahoney game. The energy of the crowd and that big stage gets me excited to play at the next level.”

She may find herself matched up against one of those teammates next year, as Cassie Friedrich ’14 plays for University of California at Merced.

I’m excited to get better and play every day with a whole new soccer family.”

Brett rasso ’1:

tALeNt, PASSION, HeArt

When Brett rasso ’14 steps into the batter’s box for Saint Mary’s College next February, it will be his first at bat in nearly two years. Rasso was a highly recruited twosport star for the Fightin’ Irish after his junior year at SHC, when he earned First Team All-WCAL honors in football and baseball. An injury during football season cut his playing days short, and he spent the majority of his senior year rehabilitating.

Instead of absorbing the impact and popping up for the next play like he had done thousands of times before, Rasso’s elbow locked as he went to the ground. The tendon injury and resulting surgery cost him his senior season in both football and baseball. He was forced to lead his teammates from the sidelines, instead of from the middle of the action.

If ever there was a young man equipped with the tools to overcome such a tough break, it was Rasso. The consummate teammate and leader, he stood in solidarity with his teams throughout the football and baseball seasons. He supported fellow baseball team members from the sidelines when they beat Saint Ignatius at AT&T Park, and again when they beat Archbishop Mitty, the top-ranked team in the Bay Area. This fall, however, he won’t be watching from the bench; he will be fighting for a starting spot in the Gaels’ infield.

De La Salle Christian Brothers In 2013-14, SHC held the distinction as the only school in the San Francisco Archdiocese to host two De La Salle Christian Brothers postulants. Brother Armando Carvahlo served as an instructor of social studies and Brother Javier Hansen served as an instructor of religious studies. The close of the academic year marked the completion of their first year of formation, and this summer they travel to Philadelphia where they will live in community at Jeremy House.

“I think it’s important for students to see other young people that choose the religious life,” Brother Armando Carvahlo shares. As a young student, Brother Armando attended a Catholic school sponsored by the Sisters of Mercy, “I was interested in how they gave their lives to education, and wished there was a male equivalent.”

When he learned of the De La Salle Christian Brothers and began to discern a vocation to the religious life, Brother Armando drew inspiration from St. John Baptist de La Salle, “I found it so interesting that the things he thought about in the 1600s are still relevant today.

As an SHC student, she was inspired by the Daughters of Charity on campus, “They were vibrant and caring, serious, straightforward and they seemed so dedicated— things I very much admired and found inspirational.”

Today, Georgina is discerning her vocation to the Daughters of Charity as a postulant. She teaches sixth grade at an Arizona grammar school sponsored by the Daughters.

Georgina shares, “The call to religious life is not always the life that young people envision for themselves. If people are to be truly happy, we must find the kind of life that allows our hearts to look up to Heaven to say, ‘Look, God, I am who you made me to be! Thank you!’

For some, that’s in the loving and committed context of marriage and parenthood. For others, it could very well be that our greatest joy will be to love and serve God’s people as a religious sister, brother or priest. My hope for young people today is that they ask God, ‘Who did you make me to be? How can I best love You and the world?’”

W

ith his passing in February, alumnus Franco Mancini ’61 made a significant gift to establish a scholarship in honor of his late mother. Mancini credited his mother, Lilia, for instilling in him a love of education, “She sincerely believed that with a good education, only then can anyone realize a happy and fulfilled life.”

Mr. Mancini’s generous bequest will establish the Lilia Mancini Endowed Scholarship Fund at SHC and will benefit countless students for generations to come. “This was truly a gift from the heart,” said Director of School Advancement John Vigo ’81.

Mancini was known by his peers for his dedication, passion and commitment to service. After graduating from Sacred Heart, Mancini attended San Francisco City College before enlisting in the U.S. Air Force where he served for three years. Upon returning stateside, he served as a substitute teacher at a local grammar school and went on to receive his bachelor’s from San Francisco State University and master’s in pub-

lic administration from Golden Gate University. He served as an administrative executive in the 9th Circuit Judicial Court of Appeals until retirement.

A lifelong learner with strong organizational and analytical skills, Franco was admired and respected by his colleagues, judges and legal professionals with whom he worked. “Anyone he worked with just adored Franco,” said close friend Lia Smith. “He was pleasant, efficient and had the talent to take on a variety of important projects. Anything Franco was curious about, he became an expert in.”

Mancini also led an engaged civic life and closely followed local politics. As a passionate San Francisco resident and Portola District native, he was a regular at community and city commission meetings. He was a driving force behind Friends of McLaren Park, a neighborhood group dedicated to the revitalization and stewardship of San Francisco’s secondlargest park.

Franco’s legacy of generosity and service will live on through the establishment of the endowed scholarship. Vigo shares, “This fund will be among our largest endowments and allow many deserving young people to realize the dream of a quality, Catholic education.”

She earned this incredible opportunity through her tenacity and confidence that SHC helped instill. Mayra recalls, “Student organizations at SHC gave me the courage to pursue leadership positions that required greater responsibility.”

. . . . . . . . . . . . . . .  On March 27 of this year, Tom Fauss shot his first hole-in-one. He used his 5-iron on a 110 yard par 3 against 25 mph winds. The shot was a huge accomplishment, considering Tom only took up the game of golf at the age of 80. Tom is a resident of the Armed Forces Retirement Home in Gulfport, Mississippi and plays golf every week.

Retired electronic engineer Brian Bergantz spent four years in the United States Air Force and attended college and electronic technical school. He and his wife, Elena, have six children. Brian received awards for two patents: a video compression processing technique, and a medical cancer detection probe. His personal motto is: “Learn everything you can. Work hard, play hard, listen to people and if you can’t laugh with life, then you missed the point. Finally, give more than you receive.”

Diane Cavallero Walsh and her husband, Edward, have two children and three grandchildren. She is a retired educator and volunteers as a CCD teacher and eucharistic minister. She enjoys travel and has visited Africa, Europe, Israel, New York and Tapatio Cliffs in Arizona.

Janet Dalpogette Firpo retired in 2004 as a bookkeeper. She and her husband, Paul, enjoy attending car shows where Paul has received several awards for his ’57 Chevy Bel Air. They have taken cruises to Panama, Alaska and down the

Mississippi. While at St. Vincent, Janet was the “Traffic Chief,” and fondly recalls serving on student council.

Walter Frey retired in 2003, and occasionally teaches real estate seminars.

He has led seminars throughout the United States, Canada, Virgin Islands, Bahamas, Puerto Rico and Kuala Lumpur.

Walter and his wife, Susie, have been married for 37 years and have one son and three grandchildren, including a set of twin girls. Walter and his son have both completed a barefoot “fire walk” on 1,400 degree coals.

Louis Gadda retired in 2009 as a design engineer. Louis and his wife, Phyllis, have four children and 10 grandchildren.

Of all of his travels, he counts visiting Carlsbad Caverns in New Mexico as his favorite trip.

Arthur Gilmore retired from Lucent Technologies and serves on the board

for the Silicon Valley Crime Stoppers.

Arthur also volunteers for the Monterey Peninsula Golf Foundation, AT&T Pebble Beach Pro Am Golf Tournament and First Tee of Monterey Peninsula. One of his favorite high school memories is the 1964 TOC Basketball Tournament. He and his wife, Dreda, have two children and one grandchild.

Gabe Harp retired from the San Francisco Police Department after 30 years of service. He and his wife, Lucia, have seven children and they all live in the City! His fondest memories of Sacred Heart include classmates Ron Fassler and Chris Ransom’s return kickoffs for touchdowns at a Washington game, Brother Conrad’s greetings on Franklin Street, and the camaraderie with fellow students.

Before joining Marin Catholic, Jim worked with the San Francisco Fire Department for 30 years, 28 of those years were served in the Haight Asbury, Station 12. He and wife, Margo, have two children and four grandchildren. In September he and Margo will travel to Ireland. Every year, he looks forward to his trip to Arizona for spring training, and reconnecting with Sacred Heart grads at Capurro’s every Friday the 13th.

Chuck Johnson retired from Pacific Bell as director of workers compensation and short- and long-term disability. For the past 15 years he has kept very busy as a volunteer with the Diocese of Oakland School Board finance committee

Bob Marquise retired from GTE and currently serves as the finance manager for St. Peter the Apostle Parish in Henderson, Nevada. He also serves as eucharistic minister. His favorite high school memories include attending games and dances.

Judy McGuinn Holcomb taught third grade and kindergarten for 29 years and is now enjoying her third year of retirement. Judy is a Giants and 49ers fan and boasts being a ticket holder for 42 years. She and her husband, Stuart, look forward to going to the new Levi’s Stadium. She enjoys gardening, cooking and playing golf.

Mike O’Brien has been married for 48 years to the love of his life, Ramona, a ’65 Presentation alumna. They have three children and six grandchildren.

After four years of service with the San Francisco Sheriff ’s Department, Mike joined the San Rafael Police Department from which he retired after 37 years.

He and Ramona enjoy motorcycling and took their longest trip to Sturgis, South Dakota for the annual motorcycle rally in 2011.

After serving in the U.S. Navy, Kevin McCoy worked for Silicon Valley firms more than 35 years. He now owns a PR firm engaged in high tech marketing logistics. He enjoys sailing, traveling and volunteering at Second Harvest Food Bank.

Connie O’Connor taught first and second grade, then joined the San Francisco Sheriff ’s Department. She retired in 2004 after 30 years of service as a captain. During her time in the Department, she was elected to the Democratic Party Central Committee and won 16 consecutive elections. In 1988 she was appointed to the Recreation and Parks Commission by former Mayor Art Agnos. Shortly thereafter she was elected president of the Commission.

Since retirement she has traveled to Europe, China, Australia, Canada and throughout the U.S. She lives in San Francisco where she enjoys theatre, movies, golfing, reading and dining out.

Kathryn Propst Mayorga Cruz started her career in education and transitioned to the hospitality industry. She currently works in accounting at Hotel Sofitel, where she has been employed for 27 years. Kathy and her husband, Martin, have traveled to Cancun, Cozumel, Jamaica, Grand Cayman, Guadalajara, Cabo San Lucas, Lake Tahoe and Las Vegas. She includes Sister Zoe, Sister Rosalie and Sister Benedicata as her favorite teachers.

Mike Restani served in the U.S. Airforce from 1966-68. For several years, he was the companion runner for Harry Cordellos, a blind San Francisco runner. The team was the subject of an inspiring documentary, “Survival Run.” Mike volunteered for blind athletes starting in 1977, and he served as a guide at two U.S. Association of Blind Athletes National Competitions. Mike also served as an educational assistant in the Albuquerque public school system. He and his wife of 25 years, Mary Jane, have traveled to Europe, Alaska, the Caribbean, the Panama Canal and Mexican Rivera.

Their favorite destination is Yosemite National Park.

Charles Wilson retired in June as the senior consulting scientist and manager of Catalysis for Chevron’s Energy Technology. He received a BS in Chemistry from St. Mary’s College and a PhD in Inorganic Chemistry from Stanford University, where Henry Taub, American chemist and Nobel Prize winner, served as his advisor. He enjoys the opera and cooking, and his favorite vacation destination is Bora Bora. He fondly recalls his time on the Blue & White school newspaper staff and counts Brother Robert, Brother Damien, Brother Phillip and Brother Benet among his favorite teachers.
