A Message From President Scudder The school year is flying by, and I’m enjoying every minute. As I continue to reflect on my tenure as president, it becomes evident that I have been blessed to be surrounded by dynamic and exceptional people. Together we have accomplished a great deal. In a few weeks, the Brothers and Daughters will be announcing my successor. The next president will be entering a school that is poised to take off to even greater heights. I remind people that I am not retiring. I am still a passenger on this incredible SHC ride. The difference is that next year I’ll be occupying a different seat, but I look forward to contributing to the continued growth of SHC. Mr. Cannon, the administrative team, and the faculty and staff have designed a curriculum and developed programs that will position SHC as a leader in innovation. We continue to receive extraordinary support from the Daughters of Charity, Christian Brothers, parents, alumni, foundations and the external community. We are truly providing the finest education within an inclusive Catholic community of faith.

sacred heart cathedral preparatory Enter to Learn; Leave to Serve Inspired by the Daughters of Charity and the De La Salle Christian Brothers, in partnership with families, Sacred Heart Cathedral Preparatory’s mission is to provide the finest education in an inclusive Catholic community of faith. We prepare our students to become service-oriented leaders with a commitment to living the Gospel.

This edition of Second Century focuses on the arts. With the development of our De Paul Campus for the Arts, SHC now has a facility commensurate with the talent of our faculty and students. It has been a great joy to watch the creative energy of Mr. Allen, Ms. Basch, Mr. Bohm, Ms. Ingersoll, Mr. Mahoney, Mr. McHugh, Ms. Smith, Ms. Torres-Kelly and Ms. Wexler take off with the new facilities and ignite the passion of the arts in the hearts of so many of our students. If you haven’t been on campus to see a show, come on down. Visit the De Paul Campus to see the amazing visual art our students are producing. Watch our students combine art, science, design and technology in our Maker Lab. Look for our marching band in the upcoming Chinese New Year Parade. We have a wonderful story to tell. Come and see. Sincerely,

John F. Scudder, Jr. ’73 President

He was not someone who would tell you what to do, but rather was someone who would say, “This is what I learned...”

Remembering

Will Spencer ’65 by John F. Scudder, Jr. ’73 John Baptist de La Salle was canonized as a saint in 1900 and declared the Patron Saint of Teachers in 1950. The relationship between teacher and student was most important to De La Salle. He called on his Brothers to know each student individually. They chose the name “Brothers” to emphasize this special relationship. This past August, with the sudden passing of Will Spencer ’65, I lost that “brother.” Throughout my 15 years as president of Sacred Heart Cathedral Preparatory, Will Spencer shared his wisdom, experience and resources as a true brother. He was not someone who would tell you what to do, but rather was someone who would say, “This is what I learned, this is what I know.” Will encouraged and supported me in whatever decisions I made. Will was a humble man. As one of SHC’s staunchest supporters, he wanted no recognition. Like the Daughters of Charity and Christian Brothers, Will served our school community with great humility. As I step down as president, I am receiving compliments on the growth of the school over these past 15 years. I can tell you that without people like Will and his wife, Claire, we would not have achieved anything near what has been accomplished. One of the great lines I’ve heard attributed to St. Vincent de Paul as he grew his ministry was, “We are not looking for people who want to work in the shade.” Will never avoided hard work. He never missed a meeting and was always the first one to arrive for the 7:30 am Building Committee meetings. Usually when I arrived around 7:15 am, Will and Frank Rollo ’58, another early riser, had already discussed and solved the major issues on the agenda. I know Will took great pride in his incredible work ethic. No one was going to outwork Will Spencer. Will Spencer’s legacy at his alma mater will live on for generations to come. We thank his wife, Claire, his daughter, Celine, and his son, Zack, who have shared Will with SHC all these years. Will was proud to be a graduate of Sacred Heart High School and he was equally proud to be associated with present-day Sacred Heart Cathedral Preparatory. We miss our “brother” Will Spencer ’65.

shc vIsual arts:

challengIng students to exPerIence theIr world “Creating or appreciating a work of art develops a student’s ability to make decisions and to transform knowledge from one medium to another medium,” explains Assistant Principal for Academics Joan O’Neill. Time and time again, we see the benefit of a strong arts curriculum in developing our students’ creative capacity and critical thinking skills. By Clarissa Mendiola Photos by James Jacobus

I

nstructor of Art Brian McHugh kneels down next to a student who is perched in front of a berry shrub just outside of the De Paul Campus, guiding him as he adds depth to his charcoal line drawing. “Make the line disappear,” Mr. McHugh suggests. “Add value.” SHC believes in the importance of a strong arts curriculum as a part of a holistic education. A solid arts program not only adds value to a broader academic curriculum, it inspires student creativity, increases motivation, encourages understanding in other areas of learning and increases the capacity for meaningful and culturally diverse experiences. As illustrated in the Visual & Performing Arts program mission, SHC believes that students acquire a greater understanding of the world around them and within them by analyzing artistic media from a variety of cultures, time periods and movements. Supported by an accomplished faculty and state-of-the-art facilities, our Visual & Performing Arts students are able to explore and hone their passions in an ideal creative environment. SHC’s

6

wInter 2014

visual arts offerings include explorations in art history; studio arts, ranging from drawing to sculpture to painting; and digital photography and design. As the students in Mr. McHugh’s Art 3, 4 class continue to carefully examine their subjects, images slowly emerge from the pages taped to their drawing boards. A dry, deeply veined leaf. The smooth curve of a succulent plant. The prickly angles of a stem. At the beginning of class, a few students protested the use of charcoal for the exercise, and now they are all fully committed, asking questions, exploring the flexibility of the medium, laughing as they discover black smudges on their clothes and faces. Mr. McHugh describes what is behind his passion for art making and art instruction, “Art is how I access the rest of the world. I don’t think I could have made it out of high school without it. These students are learning another form of communication, another way to experience the world. There is so much value in that.” Outside of the studio, we see our students draw

tangible connections between art and science in our Maker Lab, a workspace dedicated to project-based learning, focused on the crosssection of design, science and technology. In the purest sense, the Maker Lab is exactly that: a laboratory where students use their creative inclinations, technological literacy and science knowledge to make something. In an age when our youth are increasingly attached to electronic devices, this space invites students to use their intellect, their creativity and their hands. Ms. O’Neill reflects, “Sketching, using watercolors or manipulating clay prove especially important in the digital age, when students crave learning with their hands and the authenticity of a handmade piece.” SHC faculty members incorporate the use and study of visual art to challenge their students’ understanding of subjects such as mathematics and literature. Liam Carey led his AP Statistics class through the creation of infographics, utilizing image and design to tell a story. David Bangor took his calculus students to the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art to see “Field Conditions,” a group exhibit that explored ideas of space, boundaries and architecture. Kate McFadden teaches a course focused on the literature of the graphic novel and encourages her students to push their storytelling abilities through both visual and literary arts. We see the benefit of arts training in our students every day, across multiple areas of learning. Ms. O’Neill summarizes it well, “Drawing, sculpting, painting or photography broaden a student's perspective on the world and strengthen her capacity for joy, for empathy and for critical thinking. Art offers the ability to draw a crooked line, crumple up the paper and begin again. It develops the imagination and spatial intelligence as well as noncognitive skills, such as resilience and curiosity.”

A solid arts program not only adds value to a broader academic curriculum, it inspires student creativity, increases motivation, encourages understanding in other areas of learning, and increases the capacity for meaningful and culturally diverse experiences.

Alumni in the Arts angelIca roque ’07 It all started when Roque was cast in the role of Anita in West Side Story. “I had never sung in front of anybody before, and that experience gave me the courage to continue acting.” From SHC to California State university at Fullerton to the busy streets of Chicago, Roque’s path as a professional actor has been rich and rewarding. In addition to working with Teatro Luna, an all-Latina Chicago-based theater company, she most recently shot an Overstock.com commercial and auditioned for a new television pilot. Her advice to current SHC actors, “Keep at it. you will find your niche. you will find the space you belong in. Take risks, dive in and believe in what you are doing.”

beck dIefenbach ’03 After completing an internship at the St. Louis PostDispatch and working as a staff photographer for the Daily Chronicle just outside of Chicago, Beck returned to San Francisco, where he has worked as a freelance photojournalist for the last three years. “I have been lucky enough to cover subjects that I love,” Beck reflects. In 2012, he covered the San Francisco Giants’ playoff run and subsequent World Series Parade for the San Francisco Chronicle. His photographs of the Occupy movement in San Francisco and Oakland made their way to Detroit, where his grandmother saw his work in a newspaper. As an SHC student, Beck always gravitated toward the arts, working for The Emerald and then set construction for the SHC Tech Crew. To current SHC students looking to enter the world of photojournalism, he says, “Find a rudimentary camera and make as many mistakes as possible. Push yourself outside of your comfort zone. The best chance of success is to focus on photography that you know and love being around.”

tobIt raPhael ’07 This summer, Raphael (a.k.a. Capati) starred alongside comedic power duo Vince Vaughn and Owen Wilson in The Internship. As yo-yo Santos, Raphael played a Google intern, or “noogler.” In a 2013 interview with Asian Journal, Tobit credits a role he landed in his junior year at SHC as the beginning of his love for comedic acting, “I played this lovesick bird catcher and gave him these kooky birdlike mannerisms. It was like nothing else I had ever tried before, and when the audience reacted positively, I realized I wanted to be an actor.” Following the success of The Internship, Raphael will be appearing in an upcoming episode of Saint George, a new series on FX starring George Lopez. As for the future, Raphael plans to enjoy where the road takes him, “It's a journey and I'm just enjoying the ride.”

erIc Pagan ’08 While at SHC, Pagan was a chorus member, participated in various musicals and also acted as chief costume designer for a few productions. He credits the SHC faculty for encouraging his talent. “ms. erin kayser ’93 was my biggest cheerleader at SHC. She helped me look for schools and professional experiences to help me along my path. Mr. Bohm was also really helpful in guiding me.” Pagan attended Pace university in New york City and later moved to Los Angeles, where he worked as a costume designer for Disney. After creating costumes for characters such as Mickey Mouse and Darth Vader, he returned to New york to pursue his love of acting. He just completed a year-and-a-halflong run with the off-Broadway production A Mermaid’s Tale. He remembers high school fondly and considers his time at SHC to be the foundation of his career in the arts, “The VPA program allowed me to basically tailor a plan specifically for what I was passionate about. I was very fulfilled as an aspiring artist at SHC, and the level of student talent was really high.” To current SHC artists, he says, “Never give up. The harder you work, the greater your reward will be. Take advantage of the supportive people at SHC!” SECOND CENTuRy

vIctorIa frIngs ’04 Frings performed in the SHC productions of The Imaginary Invalid, Grease and Servant and Two Masters. After graduation, she attended the university of Pennsylvania and is now living in New york City, pursuing her acting dreams. She lends her versatility as a character actor to SHC Director of Drama Francine Torres-Kelly. “Ms. TK gave me roles that I never thought I would be cast in. She encouraged me to exercise and flex my acting muscles.” Last summer, Frings was a member of the Public Theater’s Shakespeare Lab in New york City and recently made her Broadway debut in An Enemy of the People. To aspiring SHC actors, she says, “Train, train, train as much as you can, and in as many artistic disciplines as you can. Don’t forget to live a full life. you can only bring a person to life if you have your own experiences to draw upon. And most importantly, have fun!”

matthew moy ’02 “When I joined theatre at SHC, it was like going home.” While at SHC, Moy suffered a dislocated kneecap onstage in the middle of a performance. Knowing that the show must go on, he relocated his kneecap and finished the show. Looking back, this was the pivotal moment for Moy, “I realized that if I could continue through that experience, I would be able to pursue an acting career in Los Angeles.” Today, Moy plays Han Lee in the television series, Two Broke Girls. His television credits include Scrubs, The Middle and How I Met Your Mother. Moy also appeared in the feature film, No Strings Attached starring Natalie Portman and Ashton Kutcher. To aspiring SHC actors he says, “Go that extra mile to differentiate yourself from the pack. Good, hard work will produce good results. Hollywood is not an impossible thing to touch. Keep things simple and work hard.”

Bringing the Yearbook to Life Sacred Heart Cathedral Preparatory’s yearbook program was awarded the 2012-13 National Award of Excellence from Jostens Publishing. by Nancy Ingersoll Last year, I challenged the yearbook staff to bring the entire book to life with the use of literary devices and quality design, and the inclusion of all students within its pages. Best practice of yearbook coverage suggests that at least half of the students appear on at least three pages. The 2012-13 Shamrock went above and beyond, including over 75 percent of the students on three or more pages.

The result was a book that included all students and represented the culture and community of SHC accurately and artistically. For these reasons, along with the quality of the content of this book, SHC’s Yearbook Club was awarded the 201213 National Award of Excellence from Jostens Publishing and was ranked First Class by National Scholastic Press Association (NSPA).

Creating a yearbook teaches students a range of skills that can be applied to many fields of study. The design principles that students learn to make each page appealing can translate to marketing and other fields of design. Collaborating with classmates generates superior ideas and wider perspectives, skills that are invaluable in any industry. The responsibility of owning a page develops project management skills, while meeting deadlines promotes time management and organization. The yearbook staff engages in various writing exercises that teach them to implement literary techniques that help to make their stories truly compelling. Technology has become a wonderful tool for yearbook creation in the past decade, particularly with web-based desktop publishing tools, which give students the ability to work on their pages anytime, anywhere. Internet research and tools make many yearbook duties paperless, allowing for a more eco-friendly process. Digital cameras allow for a greater number of photographs from which to choose, and photo-editing software allows for greater flexibility in photo enhancement.

Technology has become a more important tool for yearbook creation in the past decade.

While she holds a teaching credential in photography and has great passion for the field, Ms. Ingersoll also brings real-world design experience to the classroom. Prior to SHC, she worked in a corporate design firm and as a freelance designer. Ms. Ingersoll also teaches digital photography and the new Design 1, 2 course at SHC. The design class is a blended class that uses both traditional media and digital techniques to practice the principles of art. Ms. Ingersoll is currently developing an advanced photography curriculum for the fall of 2014.

Yearbooks have progressed from a time when each page was comprised of a few photos of yearbook staff friends, unimaginative headlines and captions stating the obvious, to a full-color, tailored book that includes a cohesive theme relevant to both the school and that particular time in its history. Yearbooks today feature photos of the entire student body with descriptive captions that adhere to the journalistic style established by NSPA and JEA (Journalism Education Association). This year, we are hard at work on the 2013-14 edition of The Shamrock. The yearbook staff has chosen a theme that celebrates the launch of our BYOD program and acknowledges all of the gifts our students bring to the SHC community. This year’s theme is “Bring It,” and The Shamrock yearbook staff is certainly bringing its A-game to make this book better than ever. SECOND CENTuRy

celeste boureIlle ’12 Former SHC soccer player Celeste Boureille ’12 has been a standout forward in her first two seasons at the University of California, Berkeley. Boureille played in all 43 games over those two seasons, starting 14 times and scoring five goals, three of which were game-winners. The Bears qualified for the NCAA Tournament this season but were edged out in the opening round by No. 9 Santa Clara, a game in which the gifted playmaker nearly went the distance, starting and playing 77 minutes en route to a 2-1 loss. According to head coach Neil McGuire, the “remarkably creative” Boureille didn’t miss a step while moving on from SHC into the top echelon of NCAA Women’s Soccer at Cal. She was a three-time All-WCAL selection and WCAL Player of the Year her senior year at SHC, scoring 18 goals and handing out nine assists that season. Boureille will return to the pitch for the Golden Bears again next fall as they build on this year’s top-25 ranking and fifth place finish in the Pac-12.

1949 st. VInCent BasKetBaLL teaM Saint Vincent High School In 1972, when Title IX of the Education Amendments passed, less than 4 percent of high school girls played a sport. That percentage was even lower in 1949. At SHC today, nearly 50 percent of the girls play at least one sport; many play more than one. The girls of the 1949 St. Vincent basketball team were pioneers of their era, not merely for taking the floor at a time when many schools did not offer girls’ sports, but also for the excellence with which they played the game. The team has the distinction of winning St. Vincent’s first CYO Basketball Championship in 1949. The basketball team finished 8-1 in CYO League play and defeated St. Brigid, 17-16 in the League Championship game, overcoming an earlier regular season loss and bringing home only the second championship in St. Vincent’s school history. The team was coached by Ruth “Monty” Montague, who coached all of the school’s sports from 1943-1952 and was considered the most successful high school coach of her time in San Francisco.

1961 saCreD Heart BaseBaLL teaM Sacred Heart High School (Hall of Famers: Frank Bertania ’61, Ron Butori ’61, Richard Braun ’63 and Dick Morosi ’61) The team’s 32-2 record is the second best in Northern California history, and the team finished an unblemished 18-0 in AAA league play. Cal Hi Sports rated the team as the best team in all of California for 1961. Ten players were named to All-City teams, including five first teamers, two second teamers and three on Honorable Mention. Coach Dick Murray was named All-City Coach of the Year, and Bertania was named Player of the Year. Three players earned first team honors in all three San Francisco newspapers and four earned All-NorCal Catholic honors. The team earned nine spots in the East-West All-Star and Examiner All-Star games, and four players went on to play Division I college baseball. Two signed professional contracts, and one played seven years in Major League Baseball.

Introducing

The CoaCh PIlara BaTTIng FaCIlITy

This fall, SHC unveiled the Coach Pilara Batting Facility, a new athletic facility serving student-athletes involved in a variety of sports. The 2,520-square-foot facility, which sits next door to the main academic building on the La Salle Campus, will be home to Fightin’ Irish baseball, softball, golf, strength and conditioning, team practices and drills, as well as the Hall of Fame Summer Baseball Camp. The fieldhouse is a custom prefabricated steel structure that includes a field turf and rubber infill interior, providing a gamequality practice and training facility. According to Director of School Advancement and former SHC baseball player and coach John Vigo ’81, “The building also features a versatile netting and tracking system that will allow for a variety of configurations, including

batting, pitching, fielding, golf, football drills and much more.” Head Baseball Coach Brian Morgan is thrilled to have a stateof-the-art, well-lit indoor facility and considers it a great benefit to his program. “This setup provides our players with a chance to get numerous swings. We can practice almost every part of the game in there. We’re so grateful to SHC and our generous donors for making it happen. Not to mention all of the baseball players and fathers who donated their free time in the demolition and setup of the cages.” The facility was named for Coach Andy Pilara, a fixture in the San Francisco baseball community and a former coach at Sacred Heart and Archbishop Riordan High Schools. It was made possible, in large part, thanks to a generous lead investment by an anonymous donor.

SHC is grateful to the following individuals and organizations for their generous support of the construction of the Coach Pilara Batting Facility: Ramiro Gonzalez

Heritage Society: YouR PLANS CAN CHANGe A LIFe Sacred Heart Cathedral Preparatory transforms young lives every day. You can be part of our important mission by creating a gift to SHC in your estate. The goal of estate planning is to provide peace of mind and financial support for yourself and your loved ones. After you have made plans for your family’s future, we invite you to extend your support by planning a gift that makes a lasting impact on the important work at SHC. As you prepare your will or trust, it is important to know that your needs will vary, depending on your age and situation. •

under 40: you have increased career responsibilities and perhaps a young family. What happens to your loved ones if you are gone? Protect the people and causes you love with your first estate plan.

ages 40-54: With growing children, aging parents and a busy schedule, estate and financial planning can be a challenge. Get your plans in order to protect your family and support your favorite causes.

ages 55-69: Retirement is around the corner—or here! Take steps to make sure that you can enjoy the extra time you'll have to travel and perhaps spend time with your children and grandchildren.

ages 70+: Learn how to make your retirement dollars last. Now is the time to be diligent about updating estate plans that put your family first and talk to your loved ones about your choices.
