LEADING CHANGE

Come to the Place Where Success Begins Whether you are a mover, a shaker, a creator or history maker, Shaw University is the place to be. As the first historically Black college and university (HBCU) in the south, Shaw University is where doctors, veterinarians, professors, researchers, lawyers, and policymakers started on their professional path. Artists, musicians, and writers mastered their craft. Community activists and religious leaders found their voices. Business leaders and entrepreneurs developed their first plan. You can discover your path within our classrooms. Located in the heart of downtown Raleigh, North Carolina, Shaw University is the perfect location for finding internships, networking with alumni, and building connections with business and community leaders.

If you are looking for a university that stands at the forefront of leadership, activism, and service, Shaw University is for you!

Ella Baker was called the Mother of the Civil Rights Movement by Time magazine. In 1960, she saw an opportunity to foster change by bringing student leaders together at Shaw University. During that weekend, the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee (SNCC) began. This group had many history-making achievements, including helping to organize the Freedom Rides, which brought national attention to the Civil Rights Movement.
