THE GUIDE SPRING 2016

Letter from the

director Gage Park master plan

will improve users’ experience

For more than 100 years, Gage Park has been a center for family entertainment and quality of life in our community. It is home to the Topeka Zoo and Conservation Center, the popular Mini-Train and Carousel, Blaisdell Family Aquatic Center, Helen Hocker Theater, the Reinisch Rose Garden and Doran Rock Garden, the Kansas Children’s Discovery Center and much more. The years have brought many changes, some of which have added popular new facilities and others which have repurposed existing facilities in less than ideal situations. As the points of interest in Gage Park have grown, way finding has become difficult. Parking and vehicle access have become an issue. It is time to develop a new master plan for Gage Park to better serve the current and future park users. First, this new master plan should: • Plan for a Special Event area for the numerous large events hosted by Gage Park • Incorporate a planned future loop perimeter trail around the park • Develop an Asset Management Plan that will improve existing amenities within the park • Incorporate the existing mini-plans for the Zoo, Children’s Discovery Center and others • Analyze and determine the most effective use of property and location of amenities, and improve visitor experiences by designing infrastructure to accommodate current and future needs

The new master plan would create better pedestrian access throughout the park allowing patrons the ability to walk to as many attractions as they desire, or just take a long walk or jog through the park. The entities that call Gage Park home (Zoo/Discovery Center/Helen Hocker Theatre/Visit Topeka, Inc.) have already formed a coalition that meets regularly to discuss how to promote and improve the experience in Gage Park. During the June 2016, meeting of the Shawnee County Parks + Recreation Advisory/ Advocate Board, staff presented this concept and the board overwhelmingly supported moving forward and sent a letter of support to the Shawnee County Parks and Recreation Foundation.

John E. Knight

Director, Shawnee County Parks + Recreation

“Gage Park is a center for family entertainment and quality of life in our community. Additions to the park through the years have raised issues with way finding, parking, pedestrian access and more. A new master plan will address these issues and improve users’ experience.”

THE GUIDE SPRING 2016

S

creams of excitement pierced the air as the ribbon was cut and Washburn Rural Middle School students headed down the water slides, across the zip line, up the climbing wall and into the bow tie wave pool at Midwest Health Aquatic Center. The students earned the privilege of being the first to use the new aquatic center by writing an editorial in their school newspaper about their excitement and anticipation for the new facility. The anticipation was echoed resoundingly by southwest Shawnee County residents who shared their excitement on social media. Updates posted on Facebook generated hundreds of “shares” and “likes.” More than 100 comments included: • Wow! Soooo excited!! • So awesome the west side of town will have something like this. • This will be awesome to have so close to us! • I think this is a great addition to Topeka! It will keep kids busy in the summer, and I am sure will bring a few summer employment opportunities! “This recreational facility will be a regional draw,” said County Commissioner Bob Archer in whose district the new recreational facility resides. “At Shawnee North Family Aquatic Center, a study of license plates in the parking lot showed that people from every county in Kansas visited the facility in one summer. As fantastic as this new facility is, we expect at least the same here.” The ribbon was cut by Archer and Brett Klausman, Vice President of Operations at Midwest Health, which made a generous $1 million contribution to support the new center. “We owe a deep and sincere debt of gratitude to Midwest Health for helping ensure that this aquatic center remains in first class condition for years to come,” said Archer. “We did not start this project without that gift, so thank you to Jim Klausman and Butch Eaton and the Midwest Health team.” Klausman and Midwest Health are heavily invested in the recent move to improve downtown Topeka and beyond. “We have been members of the Topeka community for nearly 40 years and are honored to be able to contribute to a project like this that will strengthen the future of Topeka and Shawnee County,” said Klausman. “The aquatic center is a big step in the city’s growth and development. Topeka deserves a facility of this caliber and we are proud that it will serve our citizens, our community and our future.” Archer noted the economic impact of the facility generating revenue from both local residents and those from outside the community who will spend additional dollars while in Shawnee County. He also cited a University of Kansas study showing that for every dollar invested in Parks and Recreation, there is an economic benefit of $1.70. “Parks and Recreation is about quality of life in a community,” said Terry Bertels, deputy director, SCP+R. “A good quality of life encourages our young people and families to remain in our community and it influences businesses and individuals looking to relocate to choose Shawnee County.” parks.snco.us 785.251.2600 /

“It’s very rare to see a slide of this level in a municipal park.” -Zac Stone

A study commissioned by the National Recreation and Park Association estimated the economic impact of regional and local parks at $140 billion in America and nearly $1 billion in Kansas. Another recent study showed $38 million in local tourism dollars are derived from recreation.

8

/ parks.snco.us 785.251.2600

Shawnee County Parks + Recreation’s Master Plan calls for a multi-generational recreational facility to serve the expanding southwest portion of Topeka and Shawnee County. It also calls for an aquatic facility to replace Crestview Pool which became irreparable due to a large crack in the pool structure. “The growth of this part of our community has not been matched with a growth in parks and recreation facilities. We are pleased today to deliver on a need and to deliver in a big way,” Bertels said.

Water slide is “industry leader” “A unique experience,” and “a very safe thrill” is how Zac Stone describes the water slide complex at Midwest Health Aquatic Center. Stone is vice president of Avalanche Water Slides Inc. “More than 100 hours of design went into the 35-foot high slide tower featuring three 32-inch twisting, intertwining racing tubes and two 42-inch body slide tubes. The average municipal water slide is only 20-feet high,” according to Stone.

THE GUIDE SPRING 2016

Pools

Each of Shawnee County Parks + Recreation’s aquatic centers is designed to offer a different experience. The Midwest Health Aquatic Center boasts three pools – the Main Activity Pool, the Bow Tie Wave Pool and the Leisure Pool.

Main Activity Pool

The Main Activity Pool includes a 35-foot tall slide tower that accommodates five people at a time on winding tube slides and mat slides that give riders more speed. Avalanche, the slide vendor, calls the Midwest Health Aquatic slide structure its best.

Bow Tie Wave Pool

The only one of its kind in the Midwest. With waves emanating outward in two directions from the center – great for tubing or just swimming.

Leisure Pool

The Leisure Pool features a zero level entry, a Vortex pool which is like a whirlpool without the bubbles, and a sports activity area with two basketball goals and volleyball net.

Even more

There is also an infant and toddler section which includes a large play structure and a wet deck in close proximity for parents and guardians to enjoy while watching their children.

“It’s very rare to see a slide of this level in a municipal park,” he said, calling it an industry leader as far as concept. While the 32-inch tubes intertwine, each tube is within one foot of length which makes it great for racing friends or family members. “The running length is the same, but each slide is a different experience,” said Stone. “It entices you to ride again to get that different experience.” While the slides have a capacity for five riders at a time now, the structure is designed so that two additional slides can be added for a fraction of the cost of building a new slide.

The $9.25 million aquatic center is the largest of SCP+R’s three aquatic centers. Admission to the Midwest Health Aquatic Center will be the same as for Shawnee North Family Aquatic Center and Blaisdell Family Aquatic Center for the remainder of this summer. Admission costs will be reevaluated prior to next year’s swimming season. Visit parks.snco.us for more information on aquatic centers and swimming pools.

Progress in our Parks Shawnee County Parks + Recreation recently completed $1.25 million in improvements to Dornwood Park. Two baseball/softball fields were completely renovated with new red shale infields, outfields with irrigation and new fences and dugouts. Part two of the renovation was the addition of a $600,000 spray park – a welcome addition during a hot summer.

A new .8-mile walking trail has been added to Shawnee North Community Park. The trail was funded with the help of a $137,000 federal grant and runs around the perimeter of the west side of the park. 14

preschool Bright Circle Preschool

Betsey Litscher, 785-235-1033 Bright Circle is a KDHE licensed preschool program serving children 3-5 years old. We’ve been educating preschool-aged children for more than 30 years! We believe that children learn best through the natural play environment. The early years of a child’s life are most important because that is when the characteristics of their personalities and their own self-image develop. We strive to provide appropriate activities to develop each child socially, emotionally, physically and cognitively. Through these activities, children are encouraged to learn through play, and develop their skills through self-learning, peer education and teacher-directed activities. We value not just learning, but the love of learning as well. In order to ensure individual attention, class size is limited to 15 students. A $35 nonrefundable registration is required; tuition of $11 per day is collected at the beginning of each month. Velma K.
