Teacher spotlight Clarke’s McFarland makes history ‘come alive’ to sixth-graders By AMY HANSEN

The road you first start on might not be the road you end up traveling. This is true for Scott McFarland, a sixthgrade teacher at Clarke Community Elementary School. When McFarland first went to school, he was going to be a Methodist minister, so he went to Cornell College in Mount Vernon. As time went by, he married, had children and worked various jobs across southwestern Iowa. While working at Fansteel Wellman Dynamics in Creston, McFarland decided he wanted to teach children. Even though it wasn’t the ministry, he was still administering and helping youths. “I made a conscious decision not to go into secondary education through high school,” McFarland said. “I like working with the younger kids. I especially like sixth grade.” McFarland received an associate degree through

Southwestern Community College and bachelor’s degree through Buena Vista University. At Clarke He has worked at Clarke for 24 years and started teaching when he was 34. Having the ability to have “adult-like” conversations is one thing McFarland enjoys about teaching sixth grade. “Of course, the challenges are they can be very active and very hormonal. You know, they’re very controlled by their feelings,” McFarland said with a chuckle. “They let those spill out a lot. Those are the challenging things, but those are the good things, as well.” This was the first year Clarke departmentalized its sixth grade classes, so McFarland is specializing in teaching social studies, instead of all the school subjects. Market makeover Osceola Hy-Vee debuts store’s new amenities By AMY HANSEN

OST news editor ahansen@osceolaiowa.com

Osceola Hy-Vee has been upgraded. After many months of construction at the store, a ribbon cutting was held Friday, May 1, to showcase the business’ new amenities. “In the end, we get a brand new modern facility that rivals anything that you see up in the metro areas, on a smaller scale, obviously,” said Osceola store director Lonnie Smith. Smith said it was a long winter for both customers and employees with constant construction going on throughout the business. “With the bridges over and trenches in the store, all the noise, dirt, dust and cleaning every day, working around all that. So, these guys deserve all the credit,” Smith said. “They worked hard and their people worked hard. Taking care of customers through all of what they were having to deal with is testament to how good these guys really are.” What’s new? This is a list of Osceola Hy-Vee’s new amenities • In-store pharmacy • Market Café with full-service restaurant and bar
