Clarke Superintendent Benita Gonzales is resigning her position. Clarke Community School Board approved her resignation during a school board meeting Monday night. The board room was packed during the meeting and seating became limited to standing room only. Jim Audlehelm, former

Clarke school board member, was also in attendance. Gonzales’ letter of resignation to the school board states, “I am sub- Gonzales mitting my letter of resignation effective June 30, 2014, so I may pursue other professional opportunities. It is also my hope that notice at this point

will give the district appropriate time to conduct their search for a replacement. I have had the pleasure of working with many quality people and have enjoyed the time spent at Clarke. I appreciate the opportunity to have been a part of Clarke CSD and wish the very best for the future of this learning community.” Public comment During the public comment section of the school board meeting, Janine Nelson was the only person

to speak about the superintendent’s resignation. Nelson said she has been present during open board meetings and is aware of the leadership criteria in what makes a good superintendent. “As a dedicated member of this taxpaying public, I expect no less from each of you,” Nelson said to the school board members. Nelson requested the board pull Gonzales’ resignation from the other personnel resignations and

recommendations and be voted on as a separate item during the meeting. However, that didn’t happen. Gonzales spoke to the crowd when addressing her resignation. “I would like to say that I have very much appreciated working with many of the people here,” she said. “It’s been an outstanding experience. Clarke’s club soccer program draws interest from potential coaches By AMY HANSEN

It’s time to get the ball rolling with soccer. According to Ryan Sweeney, Clarke activities director, there are two members of the community who are interested in coaching a club soccer team for Sweeney Clarke Community High School. A meeting was scheduled this week for the interested coaches. “The idea is to have a club this spring and see where interest level is and go from there,” Sweeney said.

Sweeney said, of the two potential coaches, one has a coaching certification, and the other is taking coaching classes. “The intention is to have them both certified by the time the season starts. They have a passion for soccer and would like to be involved,” Sweeney said. The soccer club teams would be open to male and female high-school students. Practices/games As for when club practices would start, Sweeney said soccer is a spring sport and practices would start sometime before spring break, like most other spring sports. A damaged vehicle sits at the intersection of Fillmore and Grant streets after an accident Feb. 19. According to an Iowa State Patrol report, law enforcement investigated the accident in Osceola. Kyle Sutton, 23, driving a Dodge Ram pickup south on Fillmore Street, lost control of his vehicle and struck a pole just south of Grant Street. Sutton left the scene of the accident and ran to his residence at 624 S. Fillmore St. Christopher Elben, 40, was an injured passenger who was transported to the Clarke County Hospital. Now, that music is coming to Osceola with the band The Straits, which features Dire Straits’ Alan Clark and Chris White with other talented, hand-picked musicians. “People can expect to see Dire Straits music played extremely well by a superb band of word-class musicians,” said Clark during a telephone interview with the Osceola Sentinel-Tribune Feb. 20. The show is 8 p.m. Saturday, March 8, at Lakeside Casino’s Event Center. How it began The band The Straits was formed when Clark and White, a saxophonist, were having breakfast at a hotel in Rome. They’d been presented with an opportunity to play a charity show. “I had no idea what this would become,” Clark said. “I was completely openminded about it.” The charity show soon evolved into a world tour for the band. During the time of the phone interview, The Straits were performing shows throughout the United Kingdom. Damage estimates are $3,000 to Decker’s vehicle and $3,000 to the 1992 pickup owned by Richard Merlyn Bonde. —————— No citations were issued after an accident 5:45 p.m. Feb. 19 on Interstate 35 near

According to a Clarke County Sheriff’s report, Charlotte Ann Brien, 69, of Des Moines, driving a 1996 Pontiac, attempted to turn north onto Interstate 35 and lost control of the vehicle in the left lane of the road. Brien’s vehicle went into the path of a 2012 Volvo semitrailer driven by Gerald Edwin Meffero, 56, of Slickville, Penn., and slid under the trailer. Meffero’s vehicle returned to the left lane of the road and came to a stop on the left side of the interstate. Brien was transported to Clarke County Hospital. Damage estimates are $6,000 to Brien’s vehicle and $500 to Meffero’s vehicle.

COLLEGE NEWS Saint John’s University COLLEGEVILLE, Minn. – Joseph Lampe, the son of Brad and Amy Lampe of Osceola, has earned the distinction of being named to the dean’s list for the 2013 fall semester at Saint John’s University (SJU). Lampe is a senior mathematics major at SJU. To be included on the dean’s list, students must have a semester grade-point average of at least 3.80 and have completed 12 credits for which honor points (A, B, C,) are awarded. American Cancer Society Relay For Life of Clarke County will host a kickoff event 7 p.m. Tuesday, March 11, at Osceola Senior Center, 114 S. Fillmore St., as volunteers and participants launch fundraising efforts for the year. The kickoff will provide information on registering for the event, as well as fundraising ideas. Those interested will also be able to register to participate for the overnight event to be held on Friday, June 13, beginning at 6 p.m. at Clarke Community High School track. Billy Lorraine Mongar, son of Eva (Leeps) and Elias Mongar, was born Jan. 22, 1934, in Osceola. He received his education at Osceola schools and graduated from Osceola High School in 1952. Billy served in the U.S. Army from 1955 to 1958, serving most of that time in Germany. Other than his years in the Army, he has been a lifetime resident of Osceola. On July 19, 1959, Billy married Letitia Utley at the First Christian Church in

Osceola. Before joining the Army, Billy helped his father in his cement and masonry business. After the Army, he was a gas station attendant for five years, a milkman for five years and owned and operated a gas station for four years. His last job was with a heavy moving and rigging company from which he retired on disability in 1988. Billy was a member of the First Christian Church in Osceola. that are really fired up about what’s going on at Clarke, and I think that there’s some really fantastic things that are happening and I’d like to see that continue.” Talk about town For the past week, the office of Osceola Sentinel-Tribune has received many questions about the rumor of Clarke Community School Board not renewing Gonzales’ one-year contract. Gerard Linskens, Clarke School Board president, said he wanted to address the rumors. “These are the facts,” Linskens said. “We did have a closed session during the last board meeting regarding the mid-term performance evaluation of the superintendent, which is customary for us to do. No actions can be taken in a closed session, and of course, no action was taken during a closed session.” According to Linskens, no more information about the closed session can be shared. “It’s pertinent just like with anyone else’s performance in any particular job. It’s confidential information,” he said. Contract It’s been less than a year since

the school board hired Gonzales. In April 2013, the board announced a one-year superintendent contract was awarded to Gonzales, who was the shared superintendent of Sigourney and Tri-County Community school districts. The board offered Gonzales a one-year contract starting July 1. This included a salary of $130,000 and cafeteria plan for insurance — a type of employee benefit plan — of $1,000 per month. The contract also included 30 days of sick leave, which would consist of 20 days of sick leave from Gonzales’ former school districts, and 10 days of sick leave Clarke offers for the first-year position. The contract also had 20 vacation days and $5,000 toward moving expenses. Positions In 2013, Clarke School Board had to replace four administrative positions within the district — superintendent, curriculum director, activities director and elementary principal. In 2014, the board will once again have to look for a new superintendent. Linskens said the process of a superintendent search will begin soon.

The Governor’s Office of Drug Control Policy (ODCP) confirmed on Tuesday, Feb. 28, that in 2013, the drug compound 5F-PB-22 was responsible for the death of three Iowans in their late teens and early twenties. Synthetic cannabinoids continue to plague the nation, even with tough laws, Iowans are still risking their lives with these drugs. In the past several years, the House Public Safety Committee has focused on stopping synthetic drug use in Iowa. Synthetic cannabinoids are often sold as “fake weed” or K2 or Spice. They are created by using a mixture of chemicals sprayed on dried plants. These products are marketed as a “legal high” and sometimes are disguised as plant food and incense. Unfortunately, no one knows what actually goes in to these products. The manufacturers constantly change the chemical compounds, in an attempt to keep their dangerous product on the market. Last week, the Drug Enforcement Agency used emer-

gency action to ban four new synthetic cannabinoids, including the compound that was responsible for the death of three Iowans. Soon, the DEA could add another ten new substances to the list. In Iowa, the board of pharmacy is working with state officials to add these compounds to the banned list in Iowa. Even with the bans in place, these dangerous drugs are easy to come by and parents need to be aware of identifiers and symptoms of synthetic drug use. According to the ODCP, the following items are identifiers: rolling papers or marijuana paraphernalia (including pipes and bongs), small

packages that may be labeled as incense, plant food, jewelry clearer, bath salts or potpourri. These drugs can cause a range of symptoms in a person from rapid heart rate and agitation to vomiting, confusion, extreme anxiety, hallucinations, seizures and suicidal thoughts or actions. If you are concerned that a person has ingested any of these drugs you are urged to call 800-222-1222 and you will be routed to your local poison control center. In case of emergency, you should always dial 9-1-1 first. The Iowa Legislature, ODCP and pharmacy board are working hard to keep these dangerous drugs off the streets, but with the constant chemical changes made by these companies to skirt the law and endanger everyone, it is a difficult battle. varsity soccer program. JV next year? One of Sweeney’s goals is to have soccer become a junior-varsity sport by next year. He said the program would be evaluated on a “year-byyear basis.” However, Sweeney did say he was nervous about club soccer, especially as it gets closer to spring. “I have my reservations about it, but we have a lot of, especially, young interest,” Sweeney said. “I’m all for anything that gets kids involved.” When students do ask Sweeney about club soccer, he said he replies, “It’s a work in progress.”

Heilman on podium at state wrestling By SCOTT VICKER

DES MOINES — Last week’s State Wrestling Tournament featured a range of emotions for Interstate 35 senior Bobby Heilman. There was elation. There was disappointment. And, finally, there was a sense of validation. Validation in that all of Heilman’s hard work had paid off in the form of a sixth-place medal at the 2014 Iowa High School State Wrestling Tournament. “It feels amazing,” Heilman said. “I’ve never experienced it before. It’s indescribable how amazing it feels.” Heilman’s tournament started with a loss to eventual runner-up Mario Pena of Hampton-Dumont by fall in 3:25 on Friday. With the senior 285-pounder needing to win two matches or face elimination, Heilman went on a run, recording three straight pins spanning Friday into Saturday, guaranteeing himself at least sixth place, and giving himself a shot at third place. “He had himself a great tournament,” Interstate 35 head coach Randy Calvert said. “Heavyweights, it’s all about who falls first sometimes. The last couple of days, he’s wrestled so well. The last two weeks he’s improved so much with his hips and his movement, we’re just so proud of him. Where he started at and where he finished at, it was unbelievable.” Heilman pinned Atlantic’s Jezidiah Phippen in 3:37 and then decked North Fayette Valley’s Dalton Lape in 1:33. That’s when he got a familiar opponent in Benton Community’s Quintin Taylor, who Heilman pinned in just 58 seconds.

“It’s my sister’s boyfriend, so that made it interesting,” Heilman said with a smile after the match. “I came out, I wanted to be tough right off the whistle. I got my foot stuck in the mat and he pushed me back and I kind of bailed out. I built my base, and I felt his weight wasn’t on me and was pushing into me, so I went for the roll and I stuck him.” That gave Heilman two matches on Saturday to determine where he’s place, from third to sixth. Heilman lost to Monticello’s Daniel Pike by fall in 2:45 and then was pinned by Solon’s Logan Linderbaum in 2:25 in the fifthplace match. “I knew I was going to have tough kids,” Heilman said. “It’s top eight. That’s all you can expect is tough matches. You’ve got to come out prepared, and I felt like I was prepared, but I didn’t wrestle to my full potential. Sixth place, starting as a freshman never wrestling before — I’m never satisfied, but I’m happy.” “He had a great tournament,” Calvert said. “He had those three falls in a row. We knew coming back today (Saturday) was going to be tough, because we knew he had good kids. Sometimes you hit it and it works, sometimes it doesn’t. Today, they didn’t work for him like they did yesterday.” Calvert said the key to Heilman’s success at the state tournament was how much he had improved in just the two weeks since sectionals. “Some of the things he used up here at the state tournament, he couldn’t use three weeks ago, because technique wise, he didn’t use them right,” Calvert said. “But he worked on it and worked on it, and he executed them really well up here. That’s the part that we’re really proud

of, is how he made himself the best wrestler he could in the short amount of time he had.” Heilman felt the improvement himself. “I felt the spark,” he said. “I felt a huge jump. I felt like I was ready for it. Once sectionals came around, I just knew it was my year. I knew it was my time to step up and I’ll be the hero.” And, the experience of competing at the state tournament for the first time as a senior was something he’ll never forget. “You see a lot different style of wrestling,” he said. “Everywhere else you see good wrestling, but you don’t see great wrestling. Here, you see amazing things. I just loved it. I didn’t even feel like there was that many people in the crowd. “I loved it,” he continued. “It was outstanding. I love wrestling. I’ll be here every year.” Interstate 35’s other two wrestlers competing in the state tournament were both eliminated after their first two matches. Sophomore 113-pounder Austin Pontier lost a 4-0 decision to his cousin, Creston/O-M’s Kruz Adamson in the first round, before losing a 6-4 decision to Boyden Hull Rock Valley’s Samuel Klarenbeek in the consolation first round. • Transportation for the client and/or family members • In-Home Therapy • Companion Care

DES MOINES — It might not have been the finish Jacob Bair wanted, but it was still a successful end to his high school wrestling career here at the 2014 State Wrestling Tournament, as he advanced to the quarterfinal round. “Obviously a little disappointing to him to not make the podium, but I thought he wrestled really well,” Clarke head coach Brian Reece said. “He was pretty aggressive in his matches and the thing I told him afterward is he has nothing to be ashamed of. He has a lot to still be proud of.” The senior 170-pounder opened his first career appearance in the state tournament by pinning Sioux Center’s Mitchell Sandbulte Bair in 2:21 to advance to the quarterfinal

round. In the quarterfinals, Bair ran into a tough opponent in second-ranked Trevor Frain, who would go on to place sixth. Frain won an 8-1 decision over Bair to send him into the consolation bracket. “He just never could get his offense going,” Reece said about the match against Frain. “Trevor’s really hard to get out of position and score on. He’s a strong wrestler. Jacob Knew that. Knowing that Trevor is really difficult to score on kind of got in our head a little bit.” Needing just one win on the consolation side to guarantee himself a spot on the podium, Bair ran into a stroke of bad luck in his match against Wahlert Dubuque’s Weslee Haynes in a 5-4 decision. “He turned him with 22 seconds left to tie the match 4-4 and then went out of bounds,” Reece said. “Had a couple more restarts and the last restart with 10 seconds left, he wrestled him and heard a whistle and stopped wres-

tling on the whistle and the kid got an escape to win 5-4. “I know he’s upset about that. That’s one of those things, this being his first time down there, that’ll happen sometimes the first time there. I thought he wrestled well again, just one of those things where he was about three seconds away from being in overtime.” Even though his career ended without a state medal, it’s still been a successful career for Bair, who has topped 100 wins and will go down as one of the winningest wrestlers in school history. “Now that the season is over and his career is over, we can look back and reflect on what sort of career he had,” Reece said. “I know he’s in the top three or four in terms of program wins for a career. He’s meant a lot to the wrestling program over the last four years. He’s been a good voice for us and a good recruiter. He’s going to be hard to replace next year for sure.”

First Christian Church (Disciples of Christ)

When they reached Capernaum, the collectors of the temple tax came to Peter and said, “Does your teacher not pay the temple tax?” He said, “Yes, he does.” (Mt. 17:24) A rather heated discussion of taxes – sales, income, city, state, you name it, was going on at the next table. All of a sudden, a young voice chipped in with “I don’t pay any tax!” A quick answer came back. “Well, it’s a good thing the rest of us do. Why, taxes pay for services and things we all need.” The young man thought a minute. “Well, I wonder then,” he ventured, “about that ten percent the Bible talks about. I mean, don’t we all need God? Don’t we all need to know about Jesus? And, don’t we all need church because we’re supposed to lean on each other and help each other? Isn’t that ten percent supposed to support all that? That’s a lot for just ten percent. Don’t you guys pay more than that for these taxes you’re talking about? Seems to me what we get from, well, call it ‘church tax’ if you want, lasts a whole lot longer than anything we get from all those other taxes.” Thus launched a rather interesting discussion of what a “tax” really is. A woman, obviously exhausted from work, stopped by the table. “I’ll tell you what’s taxing”, she added to the mix, “work is taxing!” They all looked up at her. “Yeah,” she continued, “ever think that the tax you’re talking about isn’t just money? What taxes your time? This young man’s got something there. Ever let God tax your time? I mean, the government takes it off the top, right? Four men sat looking at the door after she left. “Never thought of it that way,” one finally said. “Yep, seems like the church does a whole lot more with a whole lot less than the government ever did. I’m really thinking about that.” The young man spoke up again. “I’m gonna do more than think and talk. I’m gonna DO. I figure God gives 100 percent; the least I can do is 10 percent.” And he got up, waved at the other three, and left. That made me think. And think. As it should all of us. How many of us give God what’s left (if there IS anything left) after we’ve taken care of everything else? God gave – and gives – off the top. God gave his most precious son. What if God gave us what was left, if there was anything? Oh my. You know, in many ways we’re just like the “foreigners” Jesus spoke about. In many ways, a God-centered, Jesus-centered life is foreign to us. Let’s think about this together. When you think of your “to-do” list for the day, does prayer or read scripture go at the top? When you plan your vacation, do you say to yourself, “Now I’ll have some more time with God!” Or is it more like, “Later, God, later I’ll have time for You.” But does later REALLY ever come – that often? How about spending one morning a week in church? Let’s see, four hours out of perhaps out of 84 (or more) waking hours in your week is about 4.7 percent of your time. Why that leaves another 5.3 percent for prayer, Bible study and getting equipped to be the hands and feet of Jesus wherever you go. And the young man was right, you know. “Church tax” is so much more joy-filled, fulfilling and much longer lasting. How about it?
