Oregon Ambulance Service closes its doors By Vinde Wells Editor The sudden closing of the privately-owned Oregon Ambulance Service, Inc., has local fire and city officials strategizing to provide service for residents of the Oregon Fire District. Oregon Fire Chief Don Heller said he learned less than a week ago the ambulance service would shut down early Tuesday

morning. He said Betty Ferris, who manages the service with her husband Jim, informed the fire protection district’s board of trustees at its June 11 meeting. He said he immediately began contacting other area fire districts to enlist their assistance. The ambulance service, officially formed in 1971, is a not-for-profit corporation owned by stockholders.

Heller said the fire district will rely on mutual aid from neighboring fire departments to handle ambulance calls for the time being. “They all agreed to help, Heller said Tuesday. “They’re going to help us out temporarily. The district, which is bordered by 10 other fire districts, includes all of Oregon-Nashua Township and portions of Pine Creek, Pine, Rock, White

Rock, Rockvale, Marion, Grand Detour, and Taylor Townships. He said the district has been divided up in segments with each neighboring fire department covering the area closest to it. Mt. Morris and Byron have been designated to handle calls within the City of Oregon. He said Ogle County 911 will dispatch the fire departments according to

where the ambulance is needed. 911 Coordinator Sandra Beitel declined to comment except to say a plan was in place for handling Oregon calls. Oregon is the only fire department in the area without an ambulance service funded by property taxes. Ferris shed light Monday evening as to why the ambulance service is shutting down.

Fatal wreck on I-39 claims life Four cars, one semi collide north of Ill. 72 By Chris Johnson Reporter A Pecatonica man was killed Monday afternoon in a five-vehicle crash when the sports utility vehicle he was a passenger in was struck by a semi approaching a construction zone on Interstate 39. David E. Jones, 74, was pronounced dead on the scene. He was a passenger in an SUV driven by his wife Sara J. Jones, 71, Pecatonica. Three other people were injured in the accident which involved three more vehicles. Illinois State Police ticketed the semi driver, Jay S. Taylor, 55, Judson, Ind., for failure to reduce speed after he started the fatal chain reaction accident at 3:06 p.m. State police said Taylor was southbound on I-39 at mile marker 112 about a mile north of Ill. 72 when his semi truck and trailer rear ended Jones’ vehicle, causing it to enter the west ditch. According to the ISP crash report, Taylor failed to reduce speed for slower moving

traffic. At Ill. 72 southbound traffic enters a construction zone. Sara Jones was extricated by the Monroe Center Fire Department and transported to OSF St. Anthony’s Medical Center, Rockford, by Lifeline Helicopter. She was listed in critical condition Tuesday morning, according to a hospital spokesman. Taylor was transported to Swedish American Hospital, Rockford, by New Milford ambulance. Following the initial contact Taylor’s truck struck an SUV driven by William D. Young, 47, Owatonna, Minn. The SUV came to rest in the center median. Taylor’s truck then continued southbound and struck a passenger car driven by Carol L. Silvestri, 64, Downers Grove. The car was pushed onto the left shoulder. Finally, Taylor swerved into the west ditch where he struck a passenger car driven by Bernard C. Klotz, 71, Fort Myers, Fla. Klotz’s passenger, Penny E. Klotz, 69, Fort Meyers, Fla., was transported to Rochelle Hospital by Lynn Scott Rock Ambulance. Bernard Klotz, Silvestri, and Young were not

“The reason we are closing is financial because people aren’t paying their bills, she said Monday night. “It’s because of lack of financial support and the economic times. We don’t get tax dollars. We are only supported by ambulance fees, memorials, and donations. Anyone is welcome to stop in later in the week and talk to me. Ogle County records show Turn to A2

The Illinois State Police District 1 were assisted on the scene by the Illinois Department of Transportation, the Ogle County Sheriff’s Police, the Ogle County Coroner’s Office, the Winnebago County Sheriff’s Police, Illinois State Police District 16, New Milford ambulance, Lynn-Scott-Rock ambulance, Stillman Valley ambulance, and Monroe Center Fire Department. Southbound I-39 was shut down at Baxter Road in Winnebago County. The southbound lanes remains closed for several hours and traffic was detoured onto Ill. 251 around the crash scene. Traffic on northbound I-39

was briefly shutdown while the Lifeline helicopter was landing and taking off. The accident remains under investigation. This was the second accident on I-39 within a five mile area for the day. The Ogle County Sheriff’s Deputies and Lynn-ScottRock Fire Department responded to a two-vehicle crash at mile marker 108 northbound at 10:54 a.m. In the earlier crash, a northbound vehicle driven by Sharon Schwarz, 66, Franklin Grove, was slowing in traffic when her vehicle was rearended by a vehicle driven by Brandon Gerdes, 21, Minonk. A passenger in Schwarz’s vehicle, Barbara Schwarz, 41,

Franklin Grove, suffered a leg injury and was transported to Rochelle Community Hospital. Gerdes was cited for failure to reduce speed to avoid a accident. A third accident occurred three miles south of the fatal accident on Tuesday shortly after 3 p.m. Details were not available at press time. This stretch of I-39 has had several accidents since IDOT began a roadway improvement project between Ill. 72 and Ill. 64. IDOT advises motorists to slow down and use extreme caution when driving through the work zone. Lane restrictions are part of the construction project.

Questions about whether the Ogle County Board could do anything about Sheriff Michael Harn accepting a second job were addressed Tuesday night. “I was asked about the sheriff, said Ogle County Board Chairman Kim Gouker, Byron. “The situation is this — as an elected official he has a term until Nov. 30. The only one he reports to is the voters and they spoke. Gouker said he reviewed the situation with Ogle County State’s Attorney Mike Rock. “Harn assured us he will do the job, said Gouker. “We have no authority. We as a board can not change what has been appropriated for his department. We will monitor and make the best of it. Gouker praised the work being done by employees of the sheriff’s department. “There are good people in the department, he said. “Bad people are being arrested. Out in the country, on Leaf River Road, a charred pile is all that remains of the Beltran home. The family of six wasn’t home June 7 when a heating lamp for chickens, what fire investigators suspect, sparked the blaze. The community has rallied around Steve and Jenny Beltran and their four children, who are staying in a bunkhouse in Pecatonica temporarily. Forrestville Valley School Superintendent, Sheri Smith organized “Rally of Love as a way to provide a central location for donations. “Everyone was asking what they could do. Oregon Ambulance Service closes after 40+ years From A1 that the ambulance service building, located at 101 Madison St., is mortgagefree. Ferris said the ambulance service has been tax-free throughout its four decades of existence. “[It’s] been a pretty good deal for Oregon residents, she said. Tuesday morning, she declined to comment further on the situation, saying she didn’t have time to address questions because she was taking her husband, who suffers from cancer, for chemotherapy. Oregon Police Chief Darin DeHaan said Ferris informed

him June 13 that the business would be closing at 6 a.m. Tuesday. He said he and Mayor Tom Stone met with Heller and other fire district officials to come up with a permanent solution and explore ways the city can help in the meantime. “We need to find a solution as soon as we can, DeHaan said. “We can’t rely on mutual aid long term. Heller said one solution would be for the fire district to add an ambulance service. Doing that, however, requires voter approval of a referendum allowing the fire district to tax for the ambulance service. “State law does not allow us to use fire department

funds to run an ambulance service, Heller said. The referendum could be on the November ballot. If approved by taxpayers, the earliest that money from the referendum would be available to the fire district is a year from now. Earlier this year Heller said the cost of an ambulance service to taxpayers would be approximately 40 cents per $100 of equalized assessed valuation. That translates into an extra $200 per year in real estate taxes on a $150,000 home excluding exemptions. The Oregon Ambulance Service is licensed through the Rockford Memorial Hospital Emergency Medical

Neighboring fire departments to help cover ambulance calls By Vinde Wells Editor Neighboring fire departments are pitching in to cover calls while the Oregon Fire District is without an ambulance service. The Oregon Ambulance Service, Inc., a privatelyowned not-for-profit corporation, closed its doors early Tuesday morning, leaving residents to rely on mutual aid in case of a medical emergency. The Oregon Fire Department does not currently have an ambulance service, supported by tax dollars. Oregon Fire Chief Don Heller began contacting officials in the nine adjoining fire districts last week when he learned the ambulance service was shutting down.

The Polo Fire Protection District Board approved covering a portion of Oregon’s district Monday as the first ambulance called in an emergency. Polo Fire Chief Tony Karrow said his department will cover the southwest segment of the district. Mt. Morris and Byron will cover the City of Oregon as well as some of the surrounding rural area. “We would assist with mutual aid anyway as we have in the past, said Byron Fire Chief Galen Bennett. “It will just be more often now. Byron has 18 full and parttime paramedics. “We will be neighborly and provide mutual aid, when we can, as a short term solution, Mt. Morris Fire Chief Rob Hough said.

“We will constantly evaluate the situation and make sure we are not jeopardizing the service we provide to our taxpayers. First and foremost our priority and mission is to service the taxpaying citizens of our district. Mt. Morris’s staff included six full-time paramedics and emergency medical technicians (EMTs), and seven to eight part-time. Both districts charge a higher fee for ambulance calls out of their districts. The amount charged is based on miles traveled, and the medical equipment and supplies required. Other neighboring fire districts include Leaf River, Stillman Valley, Ogle-Lee, Lynn-Scott-Rock, Dixon Rural, Franklin Grove, and Ashton.

Services (EMS). Anthony Cellitti, EMS System Coordinator, said Tuesday afternoon that he had been informed the ambulance service was shutting down. “We’re checking into that, he said. “We’re working with the Oregon Fire Department. I can’t comment much beyond that. He said under state law, paramedics and emergency medical technicians must be certified by the state but aren’t licensed to perform medical procedures. Consequently, he said, they must practice under the license of a physician. All ambulance services are therefore affiliated with a hospital’s EMS. He said Oregon is one of very few communities without a tax-supported

ambulance service. “Oregon has had a great 40 years, he said. “They haven’t had to pay for ambulance service. Cellitti said Ferris is not required to follow any legal procedures for informing officials or the community that the ambulance service is closing because it has no contractual agreement to provide the service. “Tax-supported ambulance services have a contractual agreement with the taxpayers, he said. “Oregon has no contractual agreement with the Oregon Ambulance Service. It’s just like any other business. Over the years, Oregon Fire Protection District officials have considered establishing an ambulance service several times.

Delayed response to ambulance calls in the last year prompted Oregon fire officials to again consider the move. Heller said in February that in 2013 the fire department was called numerous times to respond when the Oregon Ambulance Service had no ambulance available or needed additional manpower. Several firefighters are already First Responders or Emergency Medical Technicians (EMTs). “Last year we did 91 of those, Heller said then. “Mt. Morris has come 50 times, and Byron has come several times, too. At that time, Ferris said the ambulance service was experiencing no problems.

Oregon Fire Chief issues statement With operations of the Oregon Ambulance Service stopping on Tuesday, June 17 the Ogle County 911 Center will be dispatching Oregon Fire Protection District for your needs. With the loss of service from the Oregon Ambulance Service, we can all expect increases in time for an ambulance to respond to emergency calls. With an increase in call volume expected, we are requesting that all non-emergency transports and needs be made with an independent private service. We have prepared a list of private service providers for you. According to Illinois State Law emergency ambulance services should be provided by private enterprise; current tax monies raised by the district are specific to fire protection only.

The board of trustees and the command staff of the fire department are working together toward a solution. Again, please be patient over the next couple of months as we are trying to rectify this need. Black Hawk statue to be topic at June 24 press conference Details on the extent of damage to the Black Hawk statue and the plan for repairing and restoring the 103-year-old icon will be the topic of a June 24 press conference. Frank Rousa, Sterling, who is heading up the effort to repair the statue, said the press conference will be held at 11 a.m. at Maxson’s Restaurant. The restaurant is located north of Oregon on the west bank of the Rock River directly across from the statue. Rausa said June 9 that

testing done last fall and this spring showed that the statue was in worse shape than originally feared. At that time, he was hopeful repair work would start yet this summer. Orange fence went up last week around the base of the concrete statue that overlooks the Rock River from Lowden State Park. Over the years due to time and weather conditions, the statue has developed cracks, and large pieces of its concrete surface have dislodged. The folded arms of the

50-foot monolith have been especially affected. Large chunks have fallen out of the elbow of the right arm and from underneath the left arm. A team of experts spent nearly a week in October examining the damage to the statue and performing tests. Engineers used high-tech scanners which allowed them to see inside the concrete to assess its condition and to determine the amount and location of steel reinforcing. Another crew scanned the statue with rotating lasers to create an exact 3-D model of the statue.

Gouker says sheriff can have three jobs From A1 taken care of. We will work with the sheriff. Harn accepted a second full-time job May 21 as a maintenance supervisor at Forrestville Valley School District and started June 2. Gouker also addressed a letter by Connie Karper, Oregon, that was published in the June 12 editions of Ogle County Newspapers and in the

Dixon Telegraph last week. “The board was attacked by a letter in a newspaper, said Gouker. “We will not change. This board is doing what needs to be done and it is all we can do. Board member Lee Meyers, Byron, claimed Karper had incorrect information in the letter. “Village president is a part time job, he said. “Also his school job is not full time yet.

Forrestville Valley Interim Superintendent Jane Eichman said last month that Harn would be expected to work 40 hours a week at the school starting June 2. He will be paid $17 an hour. Harn didn’t respond to requests for comments on his job at the school. Eichman said she was assured by Harn that it wouldn’t be a problem to balance his time between

being sheriff and the maintenance coordinator. In other sheriff’s discussions, board member Lyle Hopkins, Polo, said the Ogle County Fair Board will make space available for the sheriff’s department at this year’s county fair. “The sheriff paid for a tent from the tow fund at the fair, said Hopkins. “We made provisions to have a spot at the fair.

Council approves employee insurance plan By Chris Johnson Reporter With costs of insurance rising, the Oregon City Council took steps last week to manage the expense. Finance commissioner Ken Williams opened discussion on the renewal of employee health insurance before a vote during the June 10 city council meeting. “We have worked hard to make revenue and expenses equal, he said. “An ongoing issue is health insurance. In 2006 the cost of insurance to the city was $200,000, he said. Last year it was $331,000.

“This has averaged an eight percent increase per year, said Williams. “One of every $20 spent is on health insurance. This has doubled in the last eight years. The current cost to the city is $18,000 per year per employee for the $20,000 insurance premium. Employees are responsible for 10 percent of their premium, Williams said. Williams held meetings with department heads, employees and their families to discuss the insurance plan. “There are options to reign in costs, he said. “We expect to save $30,000 to $40,000 under this plan. Ed Burns from National

Financial Partners, Rockford, explained details of the plan to the council and employees at the meeting. “We are trying to present plans that will be here for years, said Burns. “Blue Cross Blue Shield of Illinois is the largest insurer in the state and also has the largest network for specialists. He said the plan presented to the council was a $500 individual deductible plan. After the deductible, medical care is covered at 90 percent. “At $1,400 spent out of pocket then everything is 100 percent covered as an individual, Burns said. For family coverage, he said,

the rate is simply two times an individual’s deductible. One-thousand deductible and $2,800 out of pocket cap. The plan as presented does not have traditional copays for doctor visits or prescriptions. “At the pharmacy everything is 10 percent instead of a copay, he said. He explained that the fees paid apply towards the yearly maximum out of pocket. Under the plans some employees will save money and others may see an increased in medical spending. Patrick Wiesner, Thomas Izer, and Williams voted yes, Tom Miller voted no, and Mayor Tom Stone passed.

Phelps tried his hand at lead mines and farming Editor’s note: Otto Dick, Oregon, has researched the people, places, and events important in Oregon’s history for the Ogle County Historical Society. This article is the third in a series about Oregon founder John Phelps. By Otto Dick John Phelps decided to travel to Galena. He stated he lost everything except a boat-load of tobacco which he sent to New Orleans. Clearing $4,000 on the tobacco he decided to try his luck in Galena. He heard that large fortunes had been made at the lead mines and there was an opportunity for opening a store. Dr. Hile, his friend and business associate, agreed to go with Phelps to the lead mines. On May 28, 1827, at his home in Tennessee, they saddled their horses and started their journey, arriving in St. Louis on July 1. With the $4,000 he purchased goods to be sold at Galena. At St. Louis he loaded his merchandise on a steamboat heading for Galena which was loaded with soldiers who had concerns about an Indian uprising there. When they reached

the lower rapids of the Mississippi River. the steam boat could proceed no further. Phelps then chartered a keel boat and with the help of miners headed for Galena arriving July 27, three months after he left his home in Tennessee. At Galena the miners had gone to a fortified settlement and business was completely paralyzed. He then went out to what was called the New Diggins where the miners were still at work. Phelps built a store and opened for business selling his merchandise on credit. He was told that all the miners could and would pay. Another report surfaced that hostile Indians were ready to attack. The miners met in Phelps’ store and organized for defense. Within three days about 100 volunteers headed by Phelps were ready and marched to General Whiteside’s camp. When they arrived they learned a council had been held and peace established. Lead mines sprung up covering a territory of 100 square miles. At this time miners across the country came to make their fortune. John saw an opportunity to expand his business and start a smelting business at Oak Springs, 14 miles north of Galena.

Shortly after this he built a furnace for smelting lead and opened another store at Cassville, eighty miles north of Galena. Business was good at both locations and he believed a prosperous future was ahead. He wrote his family, who were in Tennessee, to move to Galena. That fall lead prices began to fall and this completely ruined him. Here again was another setback. A group of men from Galena learned of his losses and asked him to lead an expedition with 50 men they would furnish . They were going to California to trap and trade with the Indians. They offered to give him 25 percent of the profits. John accepted and he was to go to St. Louis where this group had a large amount of lead. He sent his family by boat back to Tennessee.

John stayed in Galena to settle his affairs and started his journey to St. Louis on horseback, taking the trail leading to the Rock River at Ogle Ferry, now Dixon. This was his first sight of the beautiful Rock River. When he arrived at St. Louis he learned the store where the lead was stored had failed, and no lead was available. This ended the Rocky Mountain expedition. He met Thomas Carlin (who was later Governor of Illinois), a cousin of his wife, and told him his misfortune. Carlin told him he could live on his farm located in Alton. A year later he settled on public land on the banks of the Illinois River, built a cabin, and started to farm. When the Blackhawk War broke out Gov. Reynolds, an old friend of John Phelps, sent a dispatch to the Second Company that it was his wish that they elect John to

command the Second. He was elected and they joined the brigade marching for Rock Island. When they arrived the Indians had retreated across the Mississippi. They burned their town, and in a few days they sent a flag of truce. This event occurred in 1831, and the troops returned home.

Once again in his life he decided to as he said “better his condition and left Schuler County and returned to the lead mines. The next article will cover discovering Oregon, claiming a site for his farm between Mt. Morris and Oregon and laying out the City of Florence, now named Oregon.

Carol Glenn (right) is presented with the annual St. Mary’s Parish Woman of the Year Award by Anne Vock at the Altar and Rosary Society luncheon on June 5 at White Pines. Anne Vock was named St. Mary’s Parish Woman of the Year last year in May of 2013.

Glenn named Polo Woman of the Year Masseys to celebrate Patrecia and James Massey

Carol Glenn is the recipient of the St. Mary’s Parish Woman of the Year award. Each year in May the parishioners of St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Polo vote to select a Woman of the Year. The winner is chosen based on her contribution of time and talent to the parish and the community. Glenn has been a member of the parish for more than 65 years and has been active in numerous parish activities. In submitting their ballots, several parishioners recognized Glenn as someone who has repeatedly served both St. Mary’s parish and the Polo community by volunteering in numerous areas over the years. She has served as past president and vice president of the Altar and Rosary

Society at St. Mary’s. Glenn was a religious education coordinator for approximately nine years and also served on the parish council. For several years she served as chairman for the Women and Girl’s breakfast and volunteered for other church committees. In addition, Glenn has helped with the Chinese Auction Luncheon fundraiser and as a volunteer at Second Hand Rose. She serves at funeral luncheons whenever the parish needs her. The St. Mary’s Women of the Year is usually honored at the MotherDaughter Breakfast in May. However, because of a scheduling conflict, Glenn was honored at the Altar and Rosary Society luncheon at White Pines on Thursday, June 5.

Black bear spotted again on Sunday near Chana A black bear that was seen and photographed in the Roscoe area last week has apparently been photographed again east of Chana. Ogle County Sheriff Michael Harn confirmed that a black bear was seen east of Chana on June 15. He said, via a text message, that the bear’s current location is not known. Chicago’s WGN-TV reported that the bear was photographed by Trisha

Plescia, who lives east of Chana. In recent months a black bear has been sighted in JoDaviess and Stephenson Counties. A bear was videotaped June 9 still in the Roscoe area. A bear was photographed in DeKalb County on June 11 and then north of Rochelle on June 14. Harn again advised residents in the area of the report to take precautions, such as closely supervising pets and small animals when

they’re outside, taking down bird feeders, and not leaving any kind of food outside. On June 11, Illinois Department of Natural Resources Director Marc Miller issued a press release regarding the bear sightings. “The recent sighting of an American black bear in northwest Illinois has, understandably, generated many questions. While these animals once roamed the Illinois landscape 150 years

ago, seeing one today can be, at the very least, a startling sight, he said in the press release. “While the black bear sighted most recently has shown no aggressive behavior towards humans, it should not be approached. Help us keep this bear from being accustomed to people. Always observe wildlife from a distance. Currently black bears are not protected under state law. According to the press release,

new legislation passed this spring adds black bears, gray wolves and mountain lions to the list of protected wildlife in Illinois. “Even when signed by Gov. Quinn, the law won’t take effect until January 1, 2015. This means that immediate decisions on the fate of these animals reside with local landowners or municipalities. Once the new law takes effect, the Illinois DNR will have the exclusive

statutory authority to manage these animals in Illinois. “Until that time, we recommend that homeowners in the counties where the bear has been sighted should, for a short period of time, remove their bird feeders, keep pet food inside, and secure your trash cans and barbecue grills. By removing easy sources of food for the bear, we can encourage it to stop searching for food near homes, the press release said.

People helping out the Beltrans after house fire From A1 The Beltrans, who volunteer and help out wherever they are needed, said it is humbling yet difficult to be on the other side. “People all over, even people we don’t know, have been amazing, Jenny said. Steve agreed. “There are a lot of people doing a lot of things for us, and we really appreciate everything, Steve said. “You always hear about paying it forward, it’s just, you never think about it like this or expect anything in return. This community has been phenomenal. The family was at the parade during German Valley Days June 7. Matthew and Jeremy were on separate floats when a neighbor called saying smoke could be seen from their property. “I drove home, only to see it complete engulfed in flames, Steve said. “Jenny arrived five minutes later and we sobbed in the drive way. After a couple of devastating minutes, the couple received a call that Jeremy had been run over by a float and was being rushed to the hospital. Jenny left the fire and headed to the hospital. Steve stayed behind.

Since third grade, Jeremy has suffered from immune thrombocytopenia (ITP), which causes the immune system to attack and destroy its own blood platelets. Doctors said his leg was sprained, and he was sent home. By the next day, he was in excruciating pain and his leg was swollen, causing his mother to take him to another hospital. He was rushed to the pediatric hematologist where they discovered he had a broken ankle. As a result, emergency treatments to infuse his body with platelets had to be administered to save his leg. On crutches, he said he isn’t in as much pain, and feels much better since the residual effects of the treatments are gone. With their son finally on the mend and reality of their loss having set in, emotionally it has been draining for Steve and Jenny. Their dream home, built seven years ago, was gone, as was their beloved therapy dog, Bella. “She was a phenomenal dog, Steve said. He and daughter Julianna, used to visit patients in hospitals and residents of Pinecrest Manor in Mt. Morris with her.

More than that, he said, she was an instrumental part of their family and the loss is devastating. “They say God works in mysterious ways, Steve said. “Six months ago I lost my uncle [Larry Albeck] to cancer. He was a wonderful man who guided me in so many ways of my life. One of his personal items, which I cherish the most, was his serenity coin, which he carried with him. Following Albeck’s death Steve kept the coin with him. It was attached to a small bell and whistle. “I carried it with me at work, and at times the bell would chime to remind me of his strength in life and his faith, he said. “I relished his serenity coin and prayer. I had lost my whole life’s work, my home, my faith and my sacred spirited coin. I am angry. The fire took our family pet, the family photos and family security. “I returned to the massive wreckage in deep despair. I walked over an ocean of black ash searching for answers. I noticed an old steel logging chain laying on the garage concrete floor, which was one of the only recognizable things not burned to ash. “I pulled on the chain and

Melted to the middle of the chain was the bell, whistle and coin my uncle proudly carried. “I was frozen with emotion, Steve continued. “Truly a divine moment, I felt as if I were set free. The chain I pulled were of the chains binding me. I had restored my faith. As I stood in the coal of my life, I rubbed the front and back, and looked over and over again for the spirit and message of hope it sacredly held. Local 4-H shooters did well at state competition Gregory Bolhous, Mount Morris and Matthew Davies, Polo, competed in Compound Archery division of the Illinois 4-H Shooting Sports State Shoot held Saturday, May 31 at the Brittany Shooting Park in Bunker Hill. The competition was the first state contest held since the shooting sports program began in Illinois in 2009. Approximately 100 competitors from throughout the state participated in the contest. Dan Dawson, state Extension specialist, said the meet followed the strict guidelines established by the National 4-H Shooting Sports program. Shooting sports is one of

the fastest-growing project areas for Illinois 4-H and includes small bore rifle, air rifle, shotgun, compound bow archery, and recurve bow archery. More than 70 adult volunteers helped coordinate the day’s contest, a credit, Dawson said, to the dedicated following the new sport has in the 4-H arena. Dawson also praised Larry and Carole Mohr, owners of Brittany Shooting Park, for their gracious support in this first state shoot. 4-H members must have been at least 14 years of age and be a member of a local 4-H Shooting Sports club to compete. “Success in shooting sports is 90 percent mental

discipline, said Don Wulf, one of the state’s nationallycertified rifle instructors and range master for the contest. “You have to forget what you just did and think of every shot as your first shot of the day. 4-H Shooting sports is offered in 96 of the 102 counties in Illinois. Volunteers must complete 15 hours of training in their specific discipline and pass screenings and certification before they are allowed to work with 4-H members. To learn more about 4-H shooting sports in the community, call the Ogle County Extension office at 815-732-2191 or go to the website http://web.extension. illinois.edu/bdo/.

Couple to host field day at BerryView Orchard By Vinde Wells Editor For taste treats from smoothies to jelly to a fullbodied wine, a Mt. Morris couple is growing the right ingredient — with health benefits. Jeff and Julie Warren are raising aronia berries organically at their 20-acre BerryView Orchard, 7504 W. Midtown Rd., northwest of Mt. Morris. The Warrens will open their recently established orchard to visitors for a field day on Saturday, June 21 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Jeff said the purpose of the field day is to attract customers to the operation and to interest other people in the area to become aronia growers. The event will feature field tours and information, as well as samples of aronia products. Small green berries are already abundant on the 1,600 aronia bushes the Warrens have planted over three years, starting in 2010. Jeff said they started planting them in the fall of 2010, planted more the following fall, and the last

batch in the spring of 2012. The round berries are similar in size to blueberries and ripen to an almost black purple by early to midSeptember. “I like the health aspect, Jeff said. The fruit is noted for being high in anti-oxidants and provides various health benefits. So far the Warrens have used the berries to make wine, jellies, and various baked goods. One woman came to pick them to add to smoothies because of the rich purple color, as well as the flavor. A wholesale buyer comes from western Iowa for berries to use in the various products he makes and sells. Because the berries have an astringent taste, but are high in natural sugar, Jeff said they are especially good when mixed with other fruit, especially apples and pears. The Warrens also have more than 500 fruit trees in their orchard. The trees are mostly apple, but they also have pears, cherries, and apricots. None are yet mature enough to produce fruit. Jeff became interested in raising aronia berries after

lame brain hearings state government undertakes, but what is different about this one and what draws attention to it is the hot-button nature of high school sports. Tons of people have an interest in. Chapa LaVia probably had no idea that backlash she would be receiving from going after the IHSA. The public sat up and is paying attention. A few of the lame points brought up during the hearing: The claim was made that IHSA officials are paid too much, including the $200,000 compensation package for Hickman. I agree about that being a lot of money, but the previous Forreston school superintendent made at least that much. I’d say Hickman’s job is at least worthy of a rural school superintendent. Other lesser salaries within the IHSA salary structure are comparable to various educational administrators. LaVia calls for the IHSA to be more transparent. It already has a board of directors, a constitution, bylaws and various advisory boards. It makes its financial statements available online. Isn’t that sufficient? Another concern is lack of minorities on its staff. Shouldn’t the IHSA have the right to pick its leadership

team based upon merit, not on quota? You’ll never get the best organization to operate effectively if it is based upon political correctness. There was a question about why the state basketball tournament is downstate instead of Chicago. I could give various arguments for why it is not in Chicago, but the bigger issue is this – don’t you politicians have more important things to tackle than stumping for a different venue for a high school sporting event? The list goes on and on of inane topics, starting with the contention that perhaps the IHSA should be put under an arm of state government, so as to be better serve the public. That’s probably the most laughable of all.

Sports Column IHSA “reform backfires for politician By Andy Colbert Reporter A couple of months ago, this column touched upon the ludicrous nature of House Resolution 895, which called

for legislative hearings on the IHSA. Now, that the first hearing has been held, with two more egregious wastes of taxpayers’ money at sites in Chicago and southern Illinois to come, the verdict is in. The state politicians (55-51 vote) behind this resolution would be better served learning from how the fiscally viable IHSA operates

instead of criticizing and questioning it. “You spend less than you take in. I wish we could do that here, said state rep John Cavaletto. Numerous other legislative members, the media, school administrators, coaches and others from the general public have rushed to the defense of the IHSA and publicly chided Linda Chapa LaVia

(D-Aurora), who sponsored the resolution. Though the IHSA and its executive director Marty Hickman was grilled extensively and somewhat ignorantly by Chapa LaVia and her cronies, it became a public relations coup for the IHSA. In the past, the IHSA has been maligned people from every town and city in the state. Whether it is the public versus private competitive balance debate, the administration of state tourneys, enrollment mutlipliers, eligibility issues, etc., the IHSA has often been a whipping boy. Now, those same people critical of the IHSA have found a bigger villain. That villain is our state political system. By comparison, the IHSA has suddenly become brilliant. The reform attempt by Chapa LaVia has totally backfired with the IHSA garnering more support from the public that it ever has. They see the idiocy of the politicos and have rushed to support of the IHSA. So many of those supporters jammed the initial hearing, that a bigger room was needed to hold all the extra bodies. They also got a first-hand view of how poorly the legislators conducted the meeting. I’m sure there are other

Bird leaves marks of its own on Power Tour sports car Most anyone who saw Craig Cavanaugh’s unique 2001 Panoz Esperante sports car cruise through Ogle County as part of the Hot Rod Power Tour on June 12 could immediately appreciate its custom details and pure automotive power. But it was one of the area’s fine-feathered friends that Cavanaugh will likely remember the most when he tells family and friends about his journey along Ill. 2. Somewhere between Byron and Oregon a bird, or maybe even birds, pooped on Cavanaugh’s shiny jet black two-seat convertible, leaving white skid marks of its own on the bumper, hood, and Craig Cavanaugh, of Monmouth, reacts with his friends as he gets ready to clean bird windshield. “I think we got hit by poop from the front of his 2001 Panoz Esperante during a stop in Oregon on June 12. turkey buzzards or an eagle,” Photo by Earleen Hinton

laughed Cavanaugh as he prepared to wipe away the poop. “They didn’t appreciate the car.” Cavanaugh and his passenger pulled over in front of the Ogle County Courthouse to survey the “damage”. He emerged from the car and broke into a big smile and hearty laugh when he saw the splatter. He gladly shared the story with a handful of people who had gathered on the courthouse lawn to watch the cool cars drive by. His buddies from Monmouth who were riding in a Ford Lotus directly behind the Esperante, shared in the moment and offered a few teasing jabs of their own. One viewer noted that it could have been much worse

for the passengers if the bird had targeted the car’s interior. “I think there was just a little bit on my shorts... maybe,” Cavanaugh laughed. Maybe the high-flying birds didn’t realize they were witnessing a custom built and designed vehicle by Panoz in Braselton, Georgia—builder of America’s Most Exclusive Sports Car, according to the company’s website. Cavanaugh said his model, powered by a 4.6 liter supercharged Ford V-8, was one of only 250 made by Panoz. He said the car averages in the mid 20s for miles per gallon. With a few squirts from a cleaning bottle, Cavanaugh wiped away the splatter and headed south to Dixon.

Debra S. Ford

the depth of every passage. Over the years Debra cultivated a large extended family of patients she grew to love, and welcomed in the family members of her late husband as her own. Away from her career as a nurse, she was a great lover of animals and was an amazingly accomplished gardener, two traits she apparently inherited from her father, the late Burton Dillow who passed away at the age of 86 in July 2011. But her overriding passion was books. A voracious reader, she was rarely without a book in her quiet evenings at home. Although there will be no more telephone calls to her, the conversations her friends have had with her over the years will undoubtedly live on forever. There are certain people whose names set up a clamor in one’s heart; Debra Susan (Dillow) Ford was undeniably one of those. She is survived by her mother, Elizabeth Dillow, 84, Rock Falls; brothers, Dennis Dillow, 66, Templeton, Calif. and Lonnie Dillow, 62, Sterling; daughter, Caitlyn; son, Lane; and long time friend and companion, Tim Winge. Special thanks andacknowledgement to her late husband’s family; Barbara Ford, Debra Adkins (Ford), Ron (Dawn) Ford, and Gerry (Kathleen) Ford for providing unwavering support and companionship. Debra wished a memorial to be established in her name with any condolences and funds going to her children. Send memorials to 1122 C Jenny Drive, Sycamore IL 60178. A memorial to celebrate her life is tentatively scheduled to be held on July 11, 2014, at Centennial Park, Rock Falls.

In the early morning hours of Thursday, June 12, 2014 the world lost the wonderful soul of Debra Susan (Dillow) Ford, 56, who succumbed gracefully to a battle with breast cancer. Born at Sterling Community General on July 27, 1957 to Burton Dillow and Elizabeth June (McCabe) Dillow, Debra went on to attain lofty heights as an a student as she graduated from Rock Falls Township High School in 1975. Aspiring from an early age to become a nurse, she achieved that goal in her early 20s with an LPN degree, later graduating from Sauk Valley College in 1989 and eventually earned high honors as an registered nurse, a career at which she excelled for more than two decades, working many years alongside Dr. Gregory Reckamp at the KSB Clinic in Oregon. Debra was married in August of 1980 to a successful general contractor Michael Ford, Franklin Grove, who preceded her in death in December of 2010. Their marriage produced three children, one daughter, BriAnn, having passed away during infancy. Debra is survived by two children, Lane Ford and Caitlyn Ford Springer; and one granddaughter, Nellie, currently aged seven months, a pure joy to Deb until the end. Debra will be remembered for her kindhearted nature and as a person who shunned the glow of her own achievements. She was boundlessly hardworking, a tireless caretaker with an incomparable capacity to share equally the despair and joys of others. She stood by everyone in her life through any emotional or physical crisis, absorbing

Rochelle awarded $400,000 Brownfield grant from EPA Rochelle is one of three area communities that have been awarded Brownfield Assessments and cleanup grants totaling $1 million to help promote redevelopment of contaminated sites. Ottawa and South Beloit also received the grants. U.S. Environmental

Protection Agency Region 5 Administrator Susan Hedman made the announcement last week. She was joined by U.S. Rep. Adam Kinzinger, Ottawa Mayor Robert M. Eschbach and Rochelle Mayor Chet Olson. “These EPA grants are

solid investments in the future of Ottawa, Rochelle and South Beloit – that will help transform contaminated sites into redevelopment opportunities, said Hedman in a press release. “Rochelle will use this funding to establish a new brownfield redevelopment program.

The EPA is awarding a $400,000 grant to Rochelle to conduct environmental assessments of brownfield sites and to develop an inventory that will be used to prioritize sites for cleanup based on future redevelopment potential. “The City of Rochelle is

pleased to be a recipient of the EPA’s Brownfield Site Assessment Grant, Olson said. “These funds will give Rochelle the opportunity to assess sites within in our community for any materials which might require cleanup to create a marketable site for development.

Rochelle is one of 171 communities receiving 2014 brownfield grants from EPA to clean up contaminated properties and boost local economies by redeveloping former brownfield sites. More information on brownfields grants by state: http://cfpub. epa.gov/bf_factsheets/.
