From the Commissioner
From the Owner
To Our Fans,
As we embark on our 4th season in the Illinois Valley, I am filled with gratitude to this incredible community that has welcomed, embraced, and supported us, allowing us the opportunity to play the game we love and in turn, share that love with the Illinois Valley and beyond. Our mission continues to be providing a community mesh point where all people can gather in a safe and comfortable environment to enjoy friends, family and baseball.
Thanks to our ever growing fan base, we racked up numerous post season Prospect League awards. We have also established traditions such as our Eureka Bank’s Kids Club, Martin Equipment Youth Clinic, Tangled Roots Beer Garden, Rips Fowl Poles, WLPO Broadcast, our signature and featured theme nights, and so much more!
Adding to the excitement this year is the launch of our new “Locker Room Lumber Crew,” our crack team of bat kids especially adept at handling the lumber (wood bats). New small to medium size group outing hubs have been added, along with several new merch items and new offerings in the Beer Tent. We’re also proud to introduce our newly established Pistol Shrimp Foundation, a 501(c)3, to help with player expenses outside of what our operating budget can provide.
We’re joined by our largest intern class yet, talented hard working students from the Illinois Valley and beyond, learning and working to make your game day experience the best it can be. Our slate of theme nights and promotions will be sure to make your experience at every game this summer a unique one!
Thank you for being an important part of our team. Let’s enjoy a great summer of coming together to celebrate community through baseball.
Coaching Staff
John Jakiemiec Team Owner & Field Manager
John Jakiemiec has coached high school, travel, and summer collegiate baseball for several years, with several of his former players now playing professionally. Although he currently resides in northern California, John was born and raised in Birch Run, Michigan where he was a multisport athlete before going on to play college football at Dartmouth College. During his college years, the baseball team’s roster was filled with several players that would go on to play professionally including Mike Remlinger (the SF Giants #1 pick in 1987), and Brad Ausmus (current bench coach with the Yankees).
Coach Jakiemiec is an avid outdoorsman who considers himself to be an elite-level educator of white-tailed deer and ducks! He also enjoys a round of golf with friends and is a work-in-progress when it comes to the guitar picking style of John Prine. He resides in northern California with his wife Anne and yellow lab Tucker. Anne and John have been blessed with three children, Bryan (who played baseball for Central Michigan University), Natalie (who currently resides in London), and Kyle (UW Madison graduate in 2024!).
Mark Sheehan Pitching Coach
Mark Sheehan has trained extensively with former MLB pitcher and pitching coach Dr. Tom House, founder of the National Pitching Association (NPA) and Rod Dedeaux Research Baseball Institute (RDRBI) at USC. Coach Sheehan served as National Director of the NPA from 2015 to 2017 before founding his own academy, Evolution Athletics Baseball in Naperville, IL. Collegiate Baseball News awarded him the 2014 Teaching Professional of the Year Award. Mark has also coached with USA Baseball, and Caliendo International Sports, where he coaches 15U-17U teams on International trips. As one of the most highly respected and sought-after coaches in baseball, he has a vast amount of experience training pitchers from little league all the way up to MLB, as well as tutoring MLB and college pitching coaches and consulting with 6 MLB teams in recent years. He resides in Lisle, Illinois and is the proud dad of three sons Connor, Quinn and Nolan.
Justyn Friday Assistant Coach
Justyn Friday returns for his 6th summer with the Pistol Shrimp, having started with the team in our inaugural 2019 season. Coach Friday played at Joliet Junior College, where he was captain and on the all region team and still holds stolen base records at two different colleges. Formerly a coach at Aurora Central Catholic High School, he currently coaches at Oswego East High School. He is a teacher at Hopewell Academy, a school for special needs youth. Although he grew up in Marietta, Georgia and considers Massachusetts his home, he currently resides in Joliet, Illinois with son Justyn Jr, daughter Sydney and his pitbull Zuri.

SouthClaw Sam
Meet the Illinois Valley’s most beloved mascot and the Prospect League 2021 Mascot of the Year, SouthClaw Sam! The Pistol Shrimp’s sweet and silly mascot loves baseball, ice cream treats, and dressing up for Frightful Friday. He especially enjoys hanging out with his Eureka Savings Bank Shrimp Scampi Kids Club members!
He likes to meet new friends at games and community events and giving them High 5s makes him happy. SouthClaw has a lot of fun posing for photos, so be sure to get a picture or take a selfie with him. Fun fact: SouthClaw Sam is an officially registered member of the Mascot Hall of Fame!
WHAT THE HECK IS A PISTOL SHRIMP?
It’s Ferocious. It’s Deadly. It’s roughly the size of your finger?
The Pistol Shrimp (Alpheidae) is known as one of the deadliest creatures in the sea. What makes the pistol shrimp so special is its massive claw that is almost the size of its entire body. This claw contains a special mechanism that acts like a super-powered bubble gun. The claw is cocked, and when it’s ready, the claw closes so quickly that it creates a cavitation bubble that has the same temperature as the surface of the sun. The pistol shrimp fires this bubble at its prey at 60 miles per hour stunning or killing it.
The Illinois Valley Pistol Shrimp might not be just as deadly but they are just as dangerous.

If a batter hits a single write 1B outside the diamond and darken the line from home plate to first. If the runner on first advances to second darken the line from first to second, and so on until the runner gets home, If the runner scores, fill in the diamond with your pencil.
If a batter strikes out, write a “K” in the middle of the diamond. If that batter was the first out, write a “1” with a circle around it. Indicate subsequent outs in similar fashion.
If the batter hits a grounder to the pitcher and the pitcher fields it and throws to first base, the out would be recorded by writing “1-3” across the diamond.
If a batter flys out, write “F” followed by the fielder who caught the ball such as “F8.”
