DeKalb County Board passes congrats to Potawatomi Nation despite opposition

SYCAMORE – The DeKalb County Board recently voted to congratulate the Prairie Band Potawatomi Nation after the federal government earlier this spring put 130 acres of land into a trust for the Nation.

It was largely a ceremonial vote that bears no policy-making power but faced mostly Republican opposition and pushback from some vocal Shabbona residents who voiced concerns that the now federally recognized tribal land could impact their home values or bring unwanted development to the area.

The U.S. Department of Interior placed lands previously repurchased by the Potawatomi Nation into a trust for the Prairie Band Potawatomi Nation, according to an April 19 news release from the department. The action formally made the land in Shabbona the first federally recognized reservation in Illinois.

DeKalb County Board member Roy Plote, a Republican from District 11, represents the residents of Shabbona and said his constituents made their voice clear to him over the days preceding the May 15 vote.

“I have not had one call in favor of this, so being in my district, I will be voting no,” said Plote.

The Nation has spent $10 million over the past 20 years to repurchase 130 acres of the Shab-eh-nay Reservation, located in southern DeKalb County, that the federal government illegally sold out from under Chief Shab-eh-nay around 1850, Capitol News Illinois reported. The Nation also continues to seek the title to about 1,500 acres, mostly that encompass Shabbona Lake State Park.

Some members of the public, however – as many as 20 Shabbona residents attended the meeting – said they were

concerned the resolution could influence congressional lawmaking decisions. Potawatomi Nation officials have for years lobbied for the federal government to reclaim the Nation’s land in southern DeKalb County.

Plote was joined by six other Republicans in a 11-7 vote, largely along party lines, voting against the public congratulations to the Prairie Band Potawatomi Nation on regaining sovereign lands in DeKalb County.

Anna Wilhelmi, head of the DeKalb County Democratic Party, spoke during the meeting’s public comment period and said she was supportive of the resolution.

“I’m very proud,” Wilhelmi said. “This is a very historic moment in DeKalb County, and they are our people.”

Board member Maureen Little, from District 1, was the only Republican to vote in favor of the resolution. Republican board members Laurie Emmer, Benjamin Haier, Rhonda Henke and Savannah Ilenikhena, as well as Democratic board members Laura Hoffman and Terri Mann-Lamb did not attend the meeting.

The resolution that was approved in their absence states the DeKalb County Board looks forward to building a positive working relationship with the Nation. Tim Bagby, head of the DeKalb County Republican Party who represents District 3, said he believes the resolution should have instead said that the County Board will continue what already exists: Since the Potawatomi Nation has an an intergovernmental agreement with DeKalb County since 2008.

Becky Oest, a Shabbona resident and administrator of a Facebook group called Shabbona Lake friends against Potawatomi takeover, also voiced opposition to the resolution.

During May’s Executive Committee meeting Democratic board members said the Potawatomi Nation had suffered a his-

toric injustice, and saw no reason not to congratulate the tribe for regaining sovereignty over some of the land lost two centuries ago.

Oest said she and many of the Shabbona residents are concerned about potentially losing Shabbona Lake State Park to the Potawatomi Nation.

“It’s not our intention to not say this is a historic event, but I feel – and I think a lot of other people feel too – that if you’re going to celebrate this in such a big way, I would hope that you would support your taxpayers in a big way as well,” Oest said. “We don’t want to lose the state park. So in the future I would hope to see some support for us the same way that you’re supporting the Potawatomi in this reservation celebration.”

According to an FAQ on the Nation’s website, the tribe intends to keep the park open if legislation is passed.

Peter Dordal of Shabbona and Edmond Leeney of Waterman said they are not proponents of the Department of Interior’s decision, and they questioned the authenticity of the Nation’s claim to the land. They said they don’t want to see a casino built in the area.

Nation Chairman Joseph “Zeke” Rupnick, a direct descendent of Chief Shabeh-nay, told county officials earlier this month the tribe does not plan to build a casino on the reservation.

“We’ve kind of looked at where we’re at, maybe 30 years ago when the Nation was first pursuing this it made sense but now we’re kind of isolated. Rockford has a casino going up 30 miles to the north, you’ve got Aurora and all these other ones all around the different areas,” Rupnick said May 8. “We’re blocked in. We’re on a two-lane road, not very good access, so we’re going to have to look at other opportunities that we would hope would benefit the Nation and the community as well.”

A. W. Marvin came out of doors to see which way the wind was blowing, and glancing up to the chimney of the Harrison home saw the roof blazing. The south side of the roof was burned to some extent.

Many members of the DeKalb Garden club motored to Downers Grove today where they were privileged to inspect the Morton Arboretum, which is under construction there and will not be completed for a year or more. The Morton Arboretum will rival in magnitude even the famous Kew Gardens of London and the Arnold Arboretum of Boston. It will be situated on a 400-acre plot near Lisle, Ill.

Work was started today on the building for the filling station to be operated by Corey & Son on West Lincoln Highway, at the intersection of John Street. The ground was staked out this morning and it is expected that building operations will be pushed rapidly that the station may be opened at the earliest time. Work on the station at the east limits being erected by the Texaco company is being given the stucco finish today.

The school children of Waterman marched to the park Tuesday morning to see the small old-style engine which the Northern Pacific is sending to Chicago for exhibition purposes. Quite a crowd of curious spectators were also out. The little old-style engine presented a gay appearance in its new dress of paint. It passed through Waterman about ten o’clock and was followed about 15 minutes later by a modern up-to-date five drive wheel engine. John Mercer thought the old type vividly recalled old times to him as he rode on the first engine that went through Clinton Township in the year 1870.

A special meeting of the DeKalb Chamber of Commerce has been called for Friday noon at the Innovation in order that a demonstration of the “talking and singing doll,” a product which it is proposed to manufacture in DeKalb, may be demonstrated to the business men. their proposition to members of the chamber. No stock will be sold or subscriptions presented at the meeting.

The railroad “boxcar miracle” is easing the housing shortage in southern Idaho. Homeless persons are buying abandoned boxcars at from $75 to $100. The weather-proof old cars are then transported to a home site. A cement foundation makes them livable. Rail boxcar “homeowners” say the wheels have salvage value. It takes only a few hundred dollars to convert a boxcar to a home.

Most of the 40 or so persons who attended last night’s public hearing on the proposed bypass road sat and listened. But of those who spoke, most were against the road. Two main objections surfaced at the hearing, held by the County Board’s Highway Committee to get citizen input to help it make its recommendation to the full County Board. The main objections were: Cost of

Memorial Day, 1974, is becoming a very difficult day to remember. Confusion reigns, with much of the public asking “When is Memorial Day?” Traditionally, the holiday falls on May 30. However, changes in federal and state law created a situation in which the federal government observes May 27 as a legal holiday and Illinois observes Memorial Day on May 30.

For the last three years, residents of The Meadows subdivision have seen their homes devalued and were forced to pay hundreds of dollars of flood insurance annually, all because of a paperwork error. The nightmare ended this week when the Federal Emergency Management Agency did what The Meadows residents and city officials have been begging it to do all along. FEMA removed the DeKalb subdivision from the floodplain, not by building a dam or putting the houses on stilts, but by changing the lines on a map.

‘Pumpkins Around the World’ is 2024 fest theme

SYCAMORE – The 2024 Sycamore Pumpkin Festival is going global –thanks to a winning theme chosen by a North Grove Elementary School fourth grader.

Samuel Schwartz was declared the 2024 Sycamore Pumpkin Festival theme contest winner for his idea, “Pumpkins Around the World.” Schwartz was recognized this week on the steps of the DeKalb County Courthouse by organizers of the annual fall affair.

“A lot of people would like things around the world,” Schwartz said. “Like making a Paris out of a pumpkin.”

Schwartz, 9, also received $50 for his top award. As part of his accolades, he’ll get to help cut the giant ceremonial cake at the opening day of the festival and also ride as grand marshal in the Pumpkin Parade. This year’s festival will run Oct. 23 through Oct. 27.

2024 Sycamore Pumpkin Festival theme contest finalists (from left) Jaxson Ruby, a first grader from South Prairie Elementary, Samuel Schwartz, a fourth grader from North Grove Elementary, and Leo Berek, a fourth grader from West Elementary, pose May 15 outside the DeKalb County Courthouse in Sycamore. mentary, were named semi-finalists, winning $25 each for their efforts. They also will be featured in Sycamore Pumpkin Festival activities in October.

Pumpkin Festival Committee President Cole Regnery said the submitted themes were “as always, fantastic.”

“The students here just do such a great job. ‘Pumpkins Around the World’ was the winner, but it wasn’t by a wide margin,” Regnery said. “All the honorable mentions, and everybody else who showed up today, and everybody who didn’t show up today had great themes.”

Schwartz’s father, Nathan Schwartz, who also is the DeKalb County Engineer, said he is proud of his son and his family’s excitement for the festival has only grown.

Sycamore Pumpkin Festival theme contest committee chair Brandi Voigt said the committee received 75 theme contest entries from seven area schools. Entries were submitted from North, North Grove, South Prairie, Southeast and West elementary schools, as well as Corner Stone Christian Academy, St. Mary’s Catholic School and home-schooled students.

the theme contest. The essay contest is sponsored by the Sycamore Kiwanis Club.

Of the more than six dozen entries, 10 ideas were selected as finalists for

Leo Berek, a fourth grader from West Elementary, and Jaxson Ruby, a first grader from South Prairie Ele -

“We come up with so many great ideas during the year, particularly right after Pumpkin Fest, of what we want to do next year, and then in the month leading up to Pumpkin Fest we forget all of those,” Nathan Schwartz said. “We’re always struggling, so we’re really excited that Sam got to have his topic selected because we actually started an idea box, so we won’t forget those. So we might have half a dozen pumpkins out there this year.”

Bears legend to help open marijuana dispensary

SHAW LOCAL NEWS NETWORK contact@shawmedia.com

DeKALB – DeKalb’s second recreational marijuana dispensary is celebrating its grand opening May 23, with some help from a familiar face to Chicago Bears fans: former quarterback Jim McMahon.

NuEra cannabis dispensary, 818 W. Lincoln Highway in the Junction Shopping Center, will host a public grand opening with a ribbon-cutting at 5:15 p.m. May 23, following by a special signing event with McMahon from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m., according to a news release.

McMahon’s Bears’ legacy was cemented when he played quarterback for the 1985 Super Bowl champions. He also is a brand founder for Revenant cannabis, according to nuEra.

“One of the most exciting things about nuEra DeKalb is that we were able to design it to be an experience. We have an awesome range of accessories from handmade glass to top of the line rigs, from apparel to fun knick

knacks for cannabis aficionados; we have art by the incredible local muralist Katie Lukes; we have a place to sit, ask questions, browse, learn and

weekend discounts one day early.

The 5,000-square-foot dispensary moved into the spot formerly home to Book World. Since the move, the space has undergone renovations aided by a $25,000 grant awarded in March from the city of DeKalb’s Architectural Improvement Program.

The building also was upgraded with security features according to city code which also requires the security to be approved by the DeKalb Police Department.

The city’s grant also went to help improve accessibility to the space’s bathrooms and entry, along with electrical, mechanical and plumbing upgrades, Laura Jaramillo Bernal, the dispensary’s chief operating officer told the DeKalb City Council in March.

Once it opens, NuEra Cannabis will become the second of two recreational dispensaries operating in DeKalb and DeKalb County. Excelleaf opened at 305 E. Locust St. in downtown DeKalb in November.

roam,” Divina Capellupo, head of retail operations for nuEra, said in the release.

NuEra also will offer Memorial Day

NuEra Cannabis runs and operates several dispensaries in Illinois, including locations in Aurora, Chicago, East Peoria, Pekin, Urbana and Champaign.

Panduit to uproot DeKalb operations to Indiana

DeKALB – Illinois-based Panduit will close its DeKalb warehouse and move that operation to Indiana in 2025, a company official told Shaw Local News Network.

The Tinley Park-based manufacturer of electrical infrastructure will uproot its roughly 600,000-square-foot DeKalb warehouse, 1700 E. Fairview Drive, around spring 2025, said Dawn Leach, global brand manager at Panduit.

Leach said the company’s leadership determined DeKalb is no longer in its longterm plans. She said the Indiana location was chosen because of its proximity to the company’s headquarters.

She said Panduit plans to support its employees in the transition.

“Unfortunately, as we have informed our DeKalb employees, this move will impact our team in DeKalb, with the current plan of workforce reductions occurring in stages as we get closer to the new warehouse being ready,” Leach said. “That said, we are committed to trying to put all of our impacted DeKalb team members in the best position possible under the circumstances, which includes providing them the opportunity to apply for roles at our other locations, including in Merrillville and the Chicagoland area, and, if necessary, outplacement support.”

Panduit has been a longtime fixture located near the ChicagoWest Business Center having first opened its doors in August 1998. The location has seen a wave of new activity around it over the years, with major developments com-

ing on line such as Meta, Amazon and Ferrara Candy.

The new Indiana warehouse and distribution center, once completed, is expected to open its doors at 425,000 square feet, with another 175,000 square feet for future expansion.

Leach said the decision was not made lightly.

“After evaluating different options, the company then made the difficult, but strategic decision to build a newstate-of-the-art warehouse and distribution center in Merrillville, Ind., USA,” Leach said. “This investment will improve our ability to meet the needs of our customers while maintaining a strategic presence in the Midwest.”

Leach said remaining in the city of DeKalb was not a viable option, according to the company.

“As Panduit continues to grow and upgrade its manufacturing capabilities, locations, and processes, we needed to ensure that our distribution network has the necessary technology and capabilities to match those growing needs,” Leach said. “As we assessed the DeKalb warehouse, we realized that it required a significant amount of updating and wouldn’t be able to meet our growing needs.
