By ADAM POULISSE apoulisse@shawmedia.com DeKALB – It was awards night Thursday, and hundreds turned out in their evening best, eager to see who would walk away with the accolades.

The businesses were chosen based on several criteria, including sales growth, accomplishments and community programs. The winner was picked by fellow businesses from a ballot.

But this wasn’t the Golden Globes or the Oscars – it was the DeKalb Chamber of Commerce’s 2015 annual meeting, honoring the best businesses of the past year and inducting outstanding residents into the hall of fame.

“It’s by their peers who feel they deserve it,” said Matt Duffy, Executive Director of the Chamber of Commerce, “so the award speaks for itself.”

Voluntary Action Center came out on top as Business of the Year, which was the biggest award of the night, as the center rings in its 40th year with honor. Last year, VAC provided 230,000 rides to those in need, and 300,000 meals, Zucker said.

“We’ve come a long way,” said Tom Zucker, VAC Executive Director. “VAC was initially just a small group of activists meeting the community’s unmet needs.”

Round tables inside Faranda’s, 302 Grove St. in DeKalb, were filled with representatives from several area businesses for the chamber’s annual meeting. Catered food, beginning with hearty salads and ending with chocolatey sweets, were brought to the tables in waves before the lectern speeches began.

The Chamber of Commerce’s annual meeting was at once a dinner, a networking mixer and an awards banquet.

VAC was one of nine finalists nominated for the business of the year, which “has shown a strong commitment to making this a great place to live and work,” said Steve Braser, past chair of the Chamber of Commerce.

Throughout its 40 years, VAC has both added and discontinued services, all while adapting to meet the county’s needs. This summer, VAC stopped offering free community meals, which were open to anyone regardless of income, mostly because sponsors of the meals reduced their funding over the years.

Associate Director Ellen Rogers said it was a chance for the organization to focus on its other programs, like Meals on Wheels, children’s programs, senior program, summer meals and the transportation services.

Currently, VAC leaders are seeking federal grants to expand their buildings in a new location in DeKalb, while this summer they announced the end of their community meals.

Rogers has said community support and grant money have driven the organization’s ability to succeed in this area.

“We have greatly outgrown both of our facilities,” Rogers said, referring to the transit building and the kitchen building on Bethany Road near Peace Road in Sycamore. “We have secured grant monies for the transit facility at least and have entered into an agreement with the county with land set aside.

That’s where our energies will be directed: To get those facilities in place that are very much needed. We’re excited about that.”

ith a history deeply rooted in agriculture, DeKalb County

is one of the best places to live in rural America. The City of DeKalb benefits from the economic stability provided by the county’s agricultural base.

In 1912, DeKalb County was among the first in the state to establish an organization and hire a farm adviser to carry out the responsibilities of Farm Bureau work. On March 27, 1912, the charter was issued for the DeKalb County Soil Improvement Association, which eventually evolved into the DeKalb County Farm Bureau.

William G. Eckhardt became the first “county agriculturalist” or adviser June 1, 1912. The flying ear of corn became the symbol of the DeKalb Agricultural Association in 1936, depicting DeKalb brand corn flying away with the farm mortgage.

DeKalb County’s value of agricultural production totals nearly $500 million annually. Of the total acreage of land in the county, 88% is agricultural. Corn is grown on two-thirds of the farmland acres and soybeans are grown on one-fourth of the acreage. The leading ag products are corn, soybeans, hogs and cattle. DeKalb County ranks second in the state in hog production with 506,000 hogs marketed each year and markets nearly 30,000 cattle annually.

DeKalb County is also home to a number of specialty farm operations featuring a range of ag products such as dairy, sheep, Christmas trees, apple orchards, hay and straw, greenhouses, pumpkins, and vineyards. There are over 2,000 farms with an average size of 1,200 acres. The total amount of cropland in DeKalb County is 370,772 acres. The DeKalb Park District will celebrate its 80th anniversary in 2015. They have received prestigious recognition with the National Gold Medal Award from the National Recreation and Park Association. It oversees two public golf courses, more than 40 public parks, six miles of paved bike trails, an aquatic center with Olympic-size pool, soccer and ball fields and an indoor recreation center. Kishwaukee Family YMCA hosts a variety of year-round recreational leagues and classes to help residents stay active. The addition of an impressive 6,500-square-foot wellness center, complete with a cardiovascular and weight area, enhances the YMCA’s mission to enrich the spirit, mind and body of all participants, namely families and children. eKalb’s pride in its unique history is evident throughout the city—from loving restoration of historic

homes and buildings to support of family-owned businesses that have served residents for generations.

DeKalb was founded in 1837, by Russell Huntley, who ultimately would influence the course of history by persuading his cousins, Joseph Farwell and Josiah Willard Glidden, to move west to this land that held such promise. In 1874, Joseph F. Glidden invented “The Winner” barbed wire, the “wire that fenced the west.”

Glidden’s invention went on to become the most popular type of barbed wire and is still in use today.

Other founding fathers helped DeKalb claim its fame as the “Barb City,” including Isaac Ellwood and Jacob Haish. They became known as the “Barbed Wire Barons.” They were prominent businessmen, inventors and philanthropists. They shared their good fortune with the city they loved in many ways, but most importantly by donating land and money to secure the establishment of the Northern Illinois State Normal School (now Northern Illinois University) in 1895.

Barbed wire manufacturing and the State Normal School brought many people to live and work in DeKalb, quickly establishing it as a northern Illinois leader in commerce and growth. DeKalb takes great pride in the community by maintaining small town ambience through downtown preservation and showcasing its rich history.

DeKalb proudly embraces its past as it boldly plans for its future. Community leaders continually work together to strengthen business endeavors, the school system, parks and recreation, housing, health care, public services, cultural offerings and entertainment.
