PRINCETON — Winter storm Goliath stomped through the Midwest beginning on Monday, Dec. 28, bringing with it windy, icy conditions that caused several power outages, slick roads and new travel plans for many. The sleet and rain mixed with freezing temperatures caused a coat of ice to form on trees, vehicles, power lines and much more throughout the day. Those weather conditions mixed with blustery winds created several downed power lines and utility poles in many areas. Many Bureau County residents began experiencing power outages Monday afternoon that continued throughout the night and into Tuesday. According to Corn Belt Energy, more than 5,000 members through its service territory were without power due to the severe weather conditions. According to a press release, the widespread outages included four substations, more than 80 broken poles, numerous trees in the lines, many broken cross arms and downed lines. Corn Belt Energy crews were working to restore power beginning Monday, through the evening and into Tuesday. Due to the amount of outages, Corn Belt was forced to request assistance from other utilities and contract workers. Six other cooperatives were assisting in restoring power to residents, and contract tree crews were called in to help remove downed trees.

DEPUE — The weather outside was cold and blustery, but the aura inside the DePue Village Hall on Monday, Dec. 28, was warm and humble. The DePue Village Board, along with the DePue Men’s Club, presented a plaque of appreciation to former state Rep. Frank Mautino for all he has done for the small village. Mautino was sworn in as Illinois’ new Auditor General on Monday, Dec. 7. DePue Mayor Eric Bryant called Mautino a tremendous help for DePue during his time as state representative for the 76th District. Mautino had served the district since 1991, when he succeeded his father’s seat. DePue’s plaque to Mautino read: “We will forever be grateful for financial support, village projects and the leadership in helping us to continue to have our annual national championship boat races. Frank Mautino is the man who gets things done. We have been very fortunate to have you as our representative, and we wish you the best in your position. Thank you.” “We hope to still see you around,” Bryant said to Mautino.

Two utility poles which broke during Monday’s winter storm resulted in a power outage for many of the businesses on Princeton’s north end. Princeton Police and EMS assisted work crews in keeping the surrounding area safe until repairs could be made. Rain, ice and high winds throughout the region kept work crews busy as trees, poles and power lines collapsed under the strain.
