Malden salutes its veterans Berlin Township project is ready for Memorial Day

By Terri Simon tsimon@bcrnews.com

MALDEN — Since 2014, Berlin Township representatives have been working to establish a veterans’ memorial at the Malden Cemetery to honor those veterans who are buried there. “We’ve been sweating it to get it done by Memorial Day,” said Berlin Township’s John Gaylord of the project. Well, all that sweat paid off ... The Malden Cemetery now plays host to the veterans’ memorial — a beautiful addition to the quiet cemetery, which includes three flags proudly flying and three large stones, where the names of veterans who are buried in the cemetery are engraved. Those veterans’ names provide a history lesson for

those who study them — all 75 names, ranging from the Spanish American War, the Civil War, World Wars I and II, Korea, Vietnam and the Middle East Conflict. There is also room for other names to be engraved, though Gaylord said, “We don’t anticipate having a whole lot more names to add.” The memorial has been financed primarily through taxes and donations. Those who would like to help with the financial aspect of the effort, can make a donation at the Malden State Bank. Memorial Day services at the Malden Cemetery are set for 9:05 a.m. Monday, May 30. A formal dedication is planned for the memorial on Veterans Day in November. Comment on this story at www.bcrnews.com.

PRINCETON — The Princeton Elementary School (PES) Board showed its gratitude to the Bacorn family’s generous donation to the district during its board meeting, Monday, May 23. Noah Bacorn is a bright young man with autism, and his parents Corey and Jennifer gave a much-appreciated offering to PES. A benefit for Noah on April 9 at the Moose Lodge raised $8,775, and the Bacorns attended the board meeting to indicate their desire to give the money back to PES. Superintendent Tim Smith said the amount is no small sum of money for a public school struggling to take in money from the state, and the benefit was not only a huge success but a great deal of fun. “In a society that seems to relish on personal gain, the Princeton Moose Lodge constantly steps up for those in need,” Smith said. “Please know the Princeton Elementary School District Board, staff, students and families are forever grateful. Your hard work and generosity will impact many students in a great number of ways, and we offer many thanks to all of you.” In other business, Smith said at the end of April the district had a cash balance of $4,432,775 available, with an average yield of .53 percent. Smith’s claim that Illinois is caught up on its payments to PES and was answered by a sarcastic round of applause from the board members. “We are currently owed no money
