Mautino spending comes under fire

SPRINGFIELD — Just a little more than a month after former Illinois State Rep. Frank Mautino (D-Spring Valley) took off his legislative hat and put on the one that named him Illinois Auditor General, controversy now

surrounds Mautino and his campaign financial reports.

Primarily, the issue at question is: Did Mautino appropriately spend campaign contributions and were those contributions reported in a correct manner?

Media, as well as some public officials, around

the state are calling into question several dollars Mautino spent, primarily from his campaign committee dubbed, Committee for Frank J. Mautino.

Specifically in question are also campaign donations Mautino allegedly received and spent during his transition from Illinois Represen-

tative to Illinois Auditor General.

Mautino, who became a state representative in 1991, was sworn into the Illinois Auditor General office early in December 2015, but didn’t take his seat until Jan. 1, 2016.

A spokesperson for Mautino said the long-time Illinois Representative

closed his campaign committee at the end of December 2015.

Items among the questionable spending include more than $200,000 spent from Mautino’s campaign fund at Happy’s Super Service Station in Spring Valley throughout the course of more than 10 years,

according to the Illinois State Board of Elections.

Most of the expenses to Happy’s were listed as gasoline/camp. (campaign) vehicle repair and were drawn on the Committee for Frank J. Mautino account.

MANLIUS — The Bureau Valley School Board plans to involve more community input in the facilities planning this time around.

At the Tuesday, Jan. 26, board meeting, Bureau Valley Board President Rick Cernovich said the last survey sent out to the public came back stating there was a lack of information and community involvement in the decision of what to do with the district.

“It’s something we want to do before moving any further in discussing the facilities study,” he said, before asking fellow board members for their thoughts on how to better involve the community.

Board member Don DeWaele was the first to offer an opinion. He said the board needs to set guidelines for a committee to follow.

Farm Bureau hosts 101st annual meeting

PRINCETON — The Bureau County Farm Bureau (BCFB) held its 101st annual meeting on Thursday, Jan. 28, at the Wise Guys Banquet Hall in Princeton.

During regular business, nominees for election of officers was submitted. Bill Naffziger was elected president; Rex Elmore vice president; Larry Magnuson secre-

tary; and Curtis Marcum treasurer. Also, Brian Carlson was elected on the board of directors to serve District 2, Seat 1, and Jim May was elected to serve District 4, Seat 3.

Three retiring directors were also recognized during the evening, including Joe Olson, who has retired as District 3 director; Al Losey as at large director and Rick Rokosz as District 4 director.

PRINCETON — The attorney for the Princeton Elementary School (PES) District, Walt Zukowski, stopped by the board meeting Monday, Jan. 25, to share new legislation on student suspensions and expulsions.

Zukowski called PES a fine district to work with and is pleased to be able to

assist an academic community that rarely administers behavioral problems in need of solution. He said people from Chicago have voiced their concern that suspensions and expulsions are focused on minority students from the city of Chicago more frequently than other ethnic backgrounds.

Food service sanitation course offered at IVCC for cleaning and sanitizing, recognize problems and potential solutions associated with the facility, equipment and layout. The course is approved by the Illinois Department of Public Health (IDPH).

The Illinois code related to food service establishments will be discussed.

During the last session, students will take the ServSafe Protection Food Manager exam which is required for the Certified Food Handler license in the state of Illinois. Students will submit their Food Service Sanitation Manager Certification Program request form and $35 fee payable to the IDPH.

OGLESBY — Illinois Valley Community College’s Continuing Education Center will offer the food service sanitation eight-hour course from 8 a.m. to noon Monday, Feb. 8, and Tuesday, Feb. 9, and from 8 to 10 a.m. Thursday, Feb. 11, in room CTC-123.

Tuition for the course is $119; a textbook is required and available at the IVCC Bookstore. Call 815-224-0427.

• It limits out-of-school suspensions of longer than three days or expulsions to cases where all other appropriate and available behavioral and disciplinary interventions have been exhausted, whereas the student’s continued presence in school would either pose a threat to the safety of other students and staff or substantially disrupt, impede or interfere with operation of the school.

• It states students who are suspended for longer than four school days shall be provided appropriate and available support services during the period of their suspension and have an opportunity to make up work for equivalent academic credit.

Zukowski said schools have always approached situations like constant tardiness, smoking or fighting in school with consistency, but now they must provide validation as to why they are choosing the consequenc-

es they hand out. He said generally courts don’t agree with a zero tolerance policy because they recognize there are extenuating circumstances involved with every situation.

There used to be a mandatory two-year expulsion for weapons on campus, but Zukowski said he’s dealt with dozens of situations where a student goes rabbit or duck hunting in the morning and legitimately forgets to remove the weapon from their vehicle before parking on their school campus.

Other school administrators have said there is archery in physical education class and sharp hooks and tackle box knives in fishing clubs, so schools could be accused of promoting weaponry.

Superintendent Tim Smith said the district has never practiced a zero tolerance policy, but rather conducts formal meetings with the board in an effort to provide alternate placement.

“It’s frustrating from an administrative perspective because it’s painting everybody with the same brush,”

Smith said. “Chicago’s issues are somehow our issues, and we’re held to a standard that’s really not at this level.”

The legislation aims to allow every student to get their grades, graduate and move on, as doing so will only help them care for themselves and thrive as adults. Zukowski said schools are doing a good job mitigating violence within the classrooms and hallways, but until there’s a greater inclusion of shared responsibility on parents and the larger community, frustrated school officials will continue to be held back from achievable levels of education.

“You have a defined block of the day, but there’s more of the day outside of your control where the students are under the guidance of other influences,” Zukowski said, citing the unwarranted blame educators receive for poor student behavior.

“There needs to be a combined effort to make a lot of progress in this regard.”

Meeting From Page 1 During the meeting, BCFB Manager Jill Frueh spoke about the accomplishments made within the last year at the bureau and talked about various ways people can get more involved in programs and events the Farm Bureau puts on throughout the year. She also talked about the opportunities available to serve on the Farm Bureau board.

In the president’s report, Naffziger said there are several positions open at the county farm board level, and the work board members do at the meetings is important.

“We take your ideas and develop them and push them to get them addressed at the state or national level,” he said.

Naffziger also brought to light the issue of Farm Bureau membership rapidly aging and the declining membership numbers altogether.

“This has significant influence on our finances, our structure and our relevance,” he said, adding Illinois Farm Bureau is currently conducting a study on this trend called, the future of the organization.

“The focus is not just to increase membership, but it has been a process to review our purpose and take charge of the wants and needs of our current and future members,” he said. “What should our organization really look like to remain relevant and purposeful?”

Naffziger shared the biggest question on the table right now in figuring out whether or not to include those in agriculture who are not necessarily involved in farming, and if so, how to involve that group of individuals.

Guest speaker for the evening was Philip Nelson, past Illinois Farm Bureau president and former Illinois Director of Agriculture.

Bureau County Republican • bcrnews.com Nelson focused on the challenges farmers are facing today, and provided a vision of where the industry and farm bureau organization is heading.

He said the industry is changing at a rate most people never imagined.

“Consolidation is happening around farmers at a pace many are uncomfortable with,” he said. “It’s easy to be depressed time to time with the issues we face.”

Nelson offered advice on what farmers should do to embrace the rapid change in order to remain successful in the industry’s future. He said the first step is dealing with change with the right attitude and continuing to believe in the Farm Bureau organization more than ever today.

The second step is communication.

“We have come to a critical crossroads in this agriculture business …

People outside the industry are trying to dictate what (farmers) can and cannot do,” he said. “(Farmers) have got to stand up and be counted for..We’ve got to do a better job of telling our story.”

The third step is to be more creative and determined than ever before.

“It’s going to take creativity and innovation to move this organization into the next 100 years. We have to have a different mindset in these changing times to build prosperity in agriculture for the long term,” he said.

He said determined people must continue leading the organization and not be afraid to voice opinions to legislatures about the issues or ideas they may have. Nelson said having a voice is a privilege farmers in this country have.

“People have to get involved locally and express their voice during these change in times. Being creative and determined will spell success in the future,” he said.

Spending From Page 1 Those expenditures were first reported by the Edgar County Watchdogs, which is an organization that hosts a website dubbed Illinois Leaks.

Since that time, the Illinois Times as well as other media organizations have picked up the story, asking Mautino to explain his expenditures. While Illinois law does not allow the auditor general to participate in political actions, the contributions in question appear to have come before Mautino was actually sworn into the Illinois Auditor General’s seat.

Happy’s Super Service was not the only automobile shop; a host of other vehicle repair establishments also received money from Mautino, which was reported to the Illinois State Board of Elections by Mautino throughout his career.

Other financials in question include personal loans to Mautino and campaign workers, vehicle insurance, payments to Spring Valley City Bank, travel and lodging expenditures and more.

The Illinois State Board of Elections does not outline what campaign donations can be used for, however, it does list a variety of items that can’t be paid for by campaign funds.

Mautino was not available personally for comment, however, a spokesman for Mautino, Ryan Keith, issued the following statement: “Frank Mautino served his north-central district with distinction in the Illinois House for 24 years, where he held a number of leadership positions, provided exemplary service to his communities and built a record of a number of legislative accomplishments.

“During his legislative career, Frank ran for re-election every two years.

His campaign committee, Committee for Frank J. Mautino, fully disclosed and reported all spending by the campaign in compliance with Illinois campaign finance and disclosure laws. His reports fully detail campaign expenditures that were made to help defray the standard, reasonable expenses incurred while Frank performed the governmental and public service duties of serving as state representative of his large, mostly rural district.

“Upon his nomination as Auditor General, Frank’s career in elected office ended and he closed out his campaign committee at the end of December 2015,” Keith said, adding Mautino would be prepared to address the issue further in the next few days.

Obituaries Frank ‘Digger’ Muhich

GRANVILLE — Frank J. “Digger” Muhich, 89, of Granville passed away Wednesday, Jan. 27, 2016, at the LaSalle Veterans Home in LaSalle.

He was born on Nov. 22, 1926, in Mark to Frank and Mary (Kerosic) Muhich.

He served the U.S. Army Corps from 1945 to 1952 during World War II and the Korean Conflict at Panama Canal. He was promoted to staff sergeant and served in the Military Police.

He was a utility man for Lonestar Cement Frank Company and worked there until he retired.

Muhich Survivors include his sister, Elizabeth “Betty” (Lonnie) Napier of Ladd; and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; one sister, Mary Skutt; and three brothers, Anton Muhich, William Muhich and Daniel Muhich.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be at 1:30 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 30, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Granville with Father Patrick DeMeulemeester officiating. Burial will be in Sacred Heart Catholic Cemetery, Granville, with full military honors by the Granville American Legion and the VFW. Visitation will be from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 30, at the Dysart-Cofoid Funeral Chapel in Granville.

COLUMBUS, Ohio — Geraldine “Gerry” Mary Feinholz Ward Johnsten, 89, formerly of Princeton, died Sunday, Jan. 10, 2016.

Gerry was born in Peoria on Aug. 12, 1926, to Frederick J. and Anna B. Feinholz. She married Fred G. Ward in Chicago on July 13, 1946. Mr. Ward served in the 11th Airborne Division during World War II. He died in 1965 at age 41.

Geraldine In 1971, Gerry married Robert “Bob” J. Johnsten Johnsten in Chicago. In 1987 they retired to Princeton.

Gerry and Bob were members of St. Louis Catholic Church in Princeton, but enjoyed attending Mass at all of the Catholic churches in the area. Bob died Feb. 10, 2013, in Princeton.

Before retiring, Gerry worked for 15 years as a medical receptionist for Dr. Joseph F. Gorecki in Chicago. She was a Gold Coat volunteer at Perry Memorial Hospital for two years.

Survivors are her children, Darrell E. (Barbara) Ward of Gahanna, Ohio, Suzanne A. (Theodore) Allen of Carlisle, Ind., Keith A. (Darlene) Ward of Addison, Scott M. (Nancy) Ward of Burbank, Mark R. (Deanna) Johnsten of Lockport and James P. Ward of Hanover Park; 13 grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

The blink It’s been said things happen “in the blink of an eye.” I’ve used the phrase myself — actually quite a few times. My grandmother used to say it too ... It happened “in the blink of an eye.”

I have no idea where that phrase came from, who first uttered those words or why they said them. For some reason, I think it’s Biblical, but I don’t know for sure ... and I don’t really know if I care. It doesn’t really matter, I guess.

What is important, though, is the meaning behind those six words: “In the blink of an eye.” Fast, lightening speed, quicker than quick ... and every other word you can think of that describes something that happens in the length of time it takes to blink your eyes — an involuntary action which we really don’t control.

Terri Simon But the other day, I was having a fairly intense conversation with a friend, and after saying, “It happened in the blink of an eye,” I found myself really thinking about that statement.

The blink.

Strange how that word hit me that day, and it’s even stranger how I haven’t been able to stop thinking about it.

In the blink of an eye ... everything can change.

Everything. In less than a second that it takes for you to literally blink your eyes, your world can flip upside down and get crazier than you’d ever imagine it could be. On the other side of that proverbial coin, good things can also happen in the blink of an eye, but for some reason, I associate that phrase with those circumstances that are less than wonderful.

Why it seems like just yesterday I was a carefree little girl. Blink! I am a rowdy teenager who thinks she can change a less-than-wonderful world. Filled with rebellion and a good dose of animosity, I went from a sweet, little girl to one with a chip on her shoulder.

Tumultuous teenage years gave way to a young adult, who was attempting to find her way. Trials and errors — interspersed with a great deal of fun — abounded. The work place officially entered my world, and in the blink of an eye, I was an employee, instead of a carefree, opinionated teenager. Rent, electric bills and telephone bills entered the equation.

A quick decision to move out of state, new friends and colleagues, new jobs, new living arrangements happened faster than fast, and responsibilities grew before I knew what had hit me. While there was a reckless kind of abandon through it all, the past left me in the blink of an eye, as I set my sights on new and very different horizons.

Ten years later and upon returning back to Bureau County, I found a familiar yet very different world waiting for me. Had the world changed, or was it me?

I didn’t know, and I had no time to ponder the scenario. Instead, I quickly jumped head-first into the midst of it all — changed significantly by where I’d been and who I had become.

The blink.

And now ... many, many years later, I find myself reflecting on where I started, where I went, where I am and who I became. It happened so quickly — in the blink of an eye, and I’m left saddened by the fast pace yet thankful for all I’ve experienced, both good and not-so-good for those experiences have made me — like it or not — who I am today.

Where did the time go? It escaped me faster than a prisoner who has done his time and runs rapidly from his prison, shackles of life disappearing in the freedom. Seemingly in the blink of an eye, that sweet, little carefree girl turned into an adult who sees life as something much different than she ever expected ... yet ironically the same.

Now I wake up in the morning, and I try to remember that life happens at a speed and a manner in which we really can’t control. Fate brings us and takes us where we are supposed to be, and all of it happens for a reason ... in the blink of an eye.

Deep pockets With the Iowa caucuses looming this next week, I guess that it’s time I write my occasional political column. As a distant relative of “The Media,” and since this hard-hitting column appears on an opinion page of the newspaper, it seems as though it’s my sacred duty to pontificate on the presidential candidates and their positions on important issues.

Pundits have monopolized my television screen trying to talk me into believing that one candidate or another is better than the rest of the field. Actually, they spend a majority of the time telling me how much the other guy and/or gal stinks. They try to inform me on candidates’ positions on such important things as health care, gun rights, immigration and so on and so forth. There is only one issue that really matters to me and that has to do with pockets.

Pants pockets are the devil’s handiwork. Hear me out.

This past week, I helped out with a job putting up a metal ceiling. It involved putting a bunch of screws through sheets of steel to affix them to wooden rafters. Occasionally I would have the need to switch driver bits on my screw gun, so I kept the bit that was not being used in my right front pants pocket. I would have placed it in my nail apron however it was full of the screws that I was using in the aforementioned ceiling.

As I stood atop the scaffolding, I stuck my hand down into my jeans pocket to switch out bits. Seems easy enough doesn’t it? Unfortunately, I never considered all of the other stuff that I had to fight through to get to the quarter-inch driver bit.

My fingers had to sift through a bunch of loose change (some of which might have been Canadian, like Ted Cruz), a couple of empty

fun-size Snickers and Kit-Kat candy bar wrappers (breakfast is the important meal of the day), a small piece of copper wire, sawdust, a couple of assorted screws, nails and washers, my cell phone and possibly Jimmy Hoffa.

I couldn’t find it so I ended up putting my tools down and basically emptying the entire contents of the pocket to get to what I was looking for. Which, in the end, had somehow magically migrated over to my left pocket. Yet another mystery of what goes on below the belt.

I find it hard to believe that in all of the time that has passed since pants were first invented, pockets are still the best option for trouser storage. We have discovered electricity, invented the automobile, put men on the moon and developed a Weeble that has the ability to wobble but not fall down, but mankind still has not come up with a better place to put driver bits than in your pants pockets? Where’s the national debate on this crime against humanity? America should be outraged!

Have you ever found an old cough drop deep down in the most extreme depths of your pocket that had been there for an extended period of time, perhaps through multiple wash cycles? I have. It makes me happy when I think that I’ve found an unknown cherry eucalyptus treat down there only to discover that the wax paper wrapper has become hopelessly welded to the sugar-free coating. Nobody wants that kind of fiber in their diet.

And it’s not just those regular-sized front pockets that have raised my ire! Every pair of jeans I own has that goofy little pocket on the right front side that I am evidently supposed to keep my pocket watch in. I don’t recall seeing any-

Greg Wallace COMMENTARY one with a pocket watch since Tom Hanks in “The Polar Express” and I’m pretty sure that he kept it in a vest pocket. And oh yeah! He was a cartoon! I’ve never really felt the need to carry a watch that doesn’t strap to my wrist.

And while I’m on the pocket rant, what’s the need to have two back pockets? I have been on this earth for darn (excuse my language) near half a century, and I can’t think of one time that I have utilized the pocket that exists on the back of my pants that covers my left butt cheek.

Not once. My wallet goes on the right side. Nothing on the left. The left pocket is a waste of material.

I’m sure that there is no simple solution to this problem. I personally suggest crotch shelves and possibly thigh drawers. I’m just an idea man. It will take people smarter than me to pull us out of this denim-covered quagmire.

I hope that over the next days, weeks and months before the 2016 presidential election, through all of the mud-slinging, the debates, caucuses, primaries, conventions, news programs and commercials, I hope that the perfect candidate rises out of the muck and gives me the answers I’m looking for about the future of pockets and pocket usage.

That will be the person that I’ll throw my undying support behind.

Unless it’s Trump. I just kinda think he’s an idiot.

More power to the Illinois Future Caucus Younger public officials want to bring a fresh approach to the problems Illinois faces. Good luck to state Reps. Tom Demmer and Will Guzzardi and the Illinois Future Caucus.

Illinois, saddled with massive debt and deficits, unfunded pension obligations, and a budget-less state government, needs all the help it can get.

That’s why we welcome last week’s news about the establishment of the Illinois Future Caucus.

State Rep. Tom Demmer, a Dixon Republican, and state Rep. Will Guzzardi, a Chicago Democrat, are co-chairmen of the group, which is associated with the national Millennial Action Project.

They and their new caucus hope to bring to government new ways of thinking based on their experiences as millennials -- those in their 20s and 30s.

Increased political cooperation is one goal they hope to achieve.

Guzzardi said they hope “to transcend the partisanship that has caused such hardship in this state, and to build solutions for the problems that are coming down the road for Illinois.”

Demmer said today’s issues and decisions will impact millennials for the rest of their lives, so it’s important that their perspective helps to shape the future in which they’ll live.

The Illinois Future Caucus intends to focus on such issues as technology, education and criminal justice reforms and regulations.

Millennials are not the first generation of young people to feel frustrated by the world in which they find themselves.

Not so long ago, a generation of young people set out to change the world.

“If you’re not part of the solution, you’re part of the problem,” they said.

“Don’t trust anyone over 30,” they said.

They protested war, racial injustice, social injustice, poverty, pollution, environmental degradation and “the Establishment.”

They joined movements. They

joined the Peace Corps.

And then, the years passed, they grew older, and they gradually became the new Establishment — some seduced by power, others by privilege, still more by money and creature comforts.

And the imperfect world they set out to change? It still needs help — a lot of it.

Transcending political partisanship is easier said than done, particularly in Illinois where partisanship is so ingrained. But that doesn’t mean the attempt should not be made.

And if the Illinois Future Caucus can encourage more like-minded young men and women to run for public office, their chances of success will improve.

Good luck to Reps. Demmer and Guzzardi in their quest to impart idealistic sanity to the crazy, frustrating problems all around us.

IMUA Scholarship Program applications available LADD — The village of Ladd, in partnership with the Illinois Municipal Utilities Association (IMUA), will again offer a scholarship competition program for eligible high school seniors.

Each eligible applicant is asked to submit an appli-

cation and an essay of 500 words or less addressing their choice of one of three utility-related questions.

Applicants must be high school seniors whose parents or legal guardians are residential customers of the village of Ladd municipal

utility.

The deadline for submitting applications and essays is Friday, March 11. A committee of municipal utility officials will select a total of four finalists, each of whom will receive a certificate and $500 scholarship award.

Winners will be announced sometime in April.

A committee of local high school officials and community leaders will select the local recipient.

The committee will consider each applicant’s scholastic achievements, educational goals, citizenship, moral character, and participation and leadership in school and community activities. The

scholarship is given without regard to race, disability, religion, national origin or gender of applicants.

The name of the recipient will be announced at the close of the school year.

The student may apply the scholarship funds toward tuition, fees or campus housing for any course of study beginning the fall after the recipient’s high school graduation and leading to an academic degree at any accredited college or university. BV kindergarten pre-registration set Bureau Valley CUSD 340 has set the week of Feb. 22-26 for kindergarten pre-registration at Bureau Valley Elementary buildings in Walnut and Wyanet.

Parents may pre-register their child in the attendance center their child will attend from 8:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. on those dates. Children who will be 5 years old on or before Sept. 1 will be eligible to attend kindergarten in the fall. The process is simple and only takes a few minutes to complete.

Parents will be required to present proof of age (certified copy of birth certificate) at the time of registration. A certified copy of birth certificate may be acquired at the courthouse in the county in which the child was born.

Parents will also be asked to complete an information sheet. No fees will be collected until registration in August. A packet will be issued to parents containing a parent letter with a

health form, dental form, lead screening verification and a vision exam form.

Kindergarten pre-registration allows the schools to have an idea of the number of kindergartners to expect next school year so that a sufficient amount of supplies and books can be ordered for our students.

Parents who are unable to pre-register their child during the scheduled times are asked to call the office to inform the school of their intent to send a child to kindergarten.

Storm take down Lady Devils Kepner hits game-winning free throws again for Storm

MANLIUS — The game at the Storm Cellar Thursday, Jan. 28, was good down to the last shot — all three of them.

Bureau Valley senior captain Darcy Kepner knocked down two free throws to lift the Storm to a 39-38 lead over the visiting Hall Lady Devils with 19.1 remaining.

Hall got three shots, including an open look for a 3-pointer and two inbounds plays to no avail with the Storm hanging on for the Three Rivers upset.

“It was very nerve-wracking. The one thing we didn’t do well in this game was rebound and so seeing those shots go up, time couldn’t tick off fast enough,” BV coach Tiffany Gonigam said.

The Storm had to do some reevaluating after Monday’s 70-43 loss at St. Bede and surprised their coach with how they performed Thursday.

The game was just so fun because the girls executed exactly what we worked on. There’s nothing more you can ask for,” Gonigam said. “I didn’t expect this at all. Not that I don’t think we can win anytime we take the floor. But we’re kind of in a time where we’re redefining how we play. I was just looking

for small movement and tonight I think we made big improvement.”

“Gives us good confidence going into the postseason knowing Hall’’s a really good team and we can play with anybody,” Kepner said.

Kepner, like she did in Saturday’s similar 38-37 win over Princeton, calmly stepped to the line with the game on the line. It’s known as Darcy time around Bureau Valley.

“I like being in that situation and being a leader and getting the job done,” Kepner said.

Hall senior Amanda Scheri found a sweet spot from the left corner with backto-back threes to lift the Lady Devils to a 36-34 lead midway through the fourth quarter. She set up from the right corner on the press break after Kepner’s free throws, got a good lock, but missed.

Hall got the rebound and took a timeout. The Lady Devils ran a baseline play for Hunter Galassi on the inbounds, but her layup was long. Hall got possession on a tie-up on the rebound with 0.6 to go. This time, Hall ran an inbounds play to Rena Barroso, who’s hurried shot came up short with the Storm escaping with the win.

Julia Pohar led the Lady Bruins with 19 points with three 3-pointers. Dominque Schupp (four treys) and Hanna Bima each added 14 points.

TRAC clears Amboy’s early departure

The Amboy Clippers’ ship has set its course for the Northwest Upstate Illini beginning with the 2016-17 school year, and the Three Rivers Athletic Conference is now going to let them sail away.

Amboy, one of eight charter members of the Three Rivers in 1975, announced its intentions to leave the TRAC at the conclusion of the current school, though league bylaws mandate a two-year notice. Three Rivers Conference president Eric Lawson of Bureau Valley said Amboy officials had told the conference it would be playing football Week 1 at Galena in the

NUI Northwest and would not be honoring its Three Rivers schedules for 201617.

TRAC officials were ready to play hard ball with Amboy, entertaining legal avenues to force Amboy to honor its commitments and hoped the Illinois High School Association would intervene in their behalf. The IHSA, however, threw it back to the parties involved to work it out on their own.

As a result, TRAC has signed off on the Clippers’ early departure by a 11-4 vote of the conference members. Amboy took part in the vote, leaving only 10 of the other 14 members voting in approval of the early sign-off.

Bureau Valley, Hall and St. Bede all voted to allow Amboy to leave early.

St. Bede athletic director Tom McGunnigal was glad to see the issue resolved quickly so that the remaining schools can now begin to fill the voids in their schedules.

“Ultimately it is about the opportunities we can give to our kids,” he said.

“We do not want to be denying them a chance to compete in the optimum number of games a schedule allows for or the school chooses to play. It is not fair to the student-athletes.

So, from that standpoint, I’m glad as a conference we are moving on as it seemed

Clippers seek smoother waters in NUI

AMBOY — Amboy High School was a charter member of the Three Rivers Athletic Conference, one of eight schools to form the conference in 1975.

But after 41 years in the Three Rivers, citing declining enrollments, aging demographics and being unable to compete with the much larger schools in the conference, the Clippers wanted out.

They are changing course to the Northwest Upstate Illini, which they will join for the 2016-17 school year.

“One thing we do as educational leaders, we recognize when something has evolved into something different. Our time in the conference had definitely ran its course,” Amboy superintendent Jeff Thake said.

“We executed two perfect plays. Six seconds left, we ran one perfect play for a layup. The second one, we split the gap and had a chance,” he said. “If we knocked one of them down, we would have been in good shape. It just didn’t bounce our way. We’ve been fortunate this year 16 times the ball has. Sometimes it doesn’t.”

Holman said it wasn’t the final six seconds that did the Lady Devils in.

“It was the stretch in the third quarter when we can’t get it over halfcourt. It’s the stretch in the fourth quarter when we turned the ball over three times when all we want to do is get it to Hunter,” he said.

“It’s really the whole game where we had two or three girls on the floor at all times that didn’t want the basketball, because they’re being pressured.

That’s unfortunate and something as we head toward regionals, it doesn’t matter.

You’ve got to want to have the basketball at all times.”

Bureau Valley stormed out to finish the first quarter, scoring six straight points to take a 12-7 lead. Addison Moreland’s steal and layup netted a 14-9 Storm lead with 5:46 left in the second quarter.

Then the Lady Devils charged back.

Galassi converted a 3-point play on a drive in the paint. Soldati followed with a pop from the free-throw line on an inbounds play to give Hall its first lead of the game since the first quarter at 15-14.

Galassi sank two free throws with 9.2 seconds left to close out the half for a 19-16 Hall lead.

BV used a 3-pointer by Moreland and a hoop by Hurley to take a 27-26 lead at the end of the third quarter.

“Hello, my name is Helyn Wright and I arrived at Colonial Health and Rehabilitation Centre

in the late afternoon on October 21st. Immediately, I felt the same peace as before when I toured and realized I had made the right decision. I was greeted very warmly. I felt so at home here. My family was so happy about how content I was. The nurses were very attentive and respectful. I found the CNA’s to be friendly and personable; they were always there day and night to take care of what was needed. I was treated as an individual with individual needs. Food was very good; we were given a choice at each meal. The kitchen associates were very friendly and helpful.

The therapy at Colonial is Awesome! The Physical Therapist Rochelle, talked about what was going to happen. She did not tell me what was to be done, she was right there by my side doing the exercises with me. She pushed me on, but not a bad push. She just wanted to see what I was made of.

Christy and Michelle, my Occupational Therapists, were great helping me out with a couple of personal issues. Christy helped me make sure I had what I needed to go home. With my back surgery, I had restrictions, so I needed gadgets to use.

I had another evaluation on November 12 from PT and OT and was told I could go home. WOW, only 3 weeks and 2 days!

I was sent home with exercises and I continue to do them daily.

I would say the therapy was very beneficial to me. The therapy programs complimented each other in my success!

Lawson said by resolving the issue, it also allows TRAC some time to find a possible replacement for Amboy for 2017-18.

Princeton was one of the four schools to voice their objections in freeing Amboy to leave the TRAC a year early.

“We believe they should have held to their commitments and done what was best for the entire conference rather than just what was best for Amboy High school,” PHS principal Andy Berlinski said.

While TRAC will remain 14 strong, the void creates an instant impact on the upcoming football season.

Teams, such as St. Bede which was scheduled to play the Clippers in Week 1 in a crossover, as well as Bureau Valley and the other five schools in the Rock Division, are left calling audibles.

“The difficulty in football is that we have the least amount of time to find a replacement and the options are very limited.

We potentially are missing a lot by not having them on the schedule and not having anyone on the schedule to take their place,” McGunnigal said.

McGunnigal said he had offers from Niles Notre Dame to play, but he declined. The 800-all boys school was out of the Bruins’ league. In October, McGunnigal believed he could get Monmouth-Roseville, but the Titans have since filled their opening.

“Slim’s coming in the race second to none,” he said of the Bruins’ odds on finding a Week 1 replacement.

Bureau Valley co-athletic director Jason Spang went across state lines to fill Amboy’s slot in Week 5. The Storm will travel to Madison, Wis., to play North Crawford High School, a school with an enrollment of 148.

“We got lucky. To be honest, a Week 5 opponent in the state of Illinois was very tough to find,” Lawson said.

“I think Prophetstown should be commended for their willingness to move and balance the conference in the other sports for the sake of equity in the TRAC. That was a move of commitment to the rest of the schools in the conference,” McGunnigal said.

Upon its big expansion move in 2013-14, TRAC went with North-South divisions, then East-West and now one open league before going back to East-West.

The new East Division will include locals Bureau Valley, Hall, Princeton and St. Bede along with Kewanee, Newman and Prophetstown.

The West Division will be made of Erie, Fulton, Morrison, Orion, Sherrard, Rockridge and Riverdale.

The East-West scenario has proved more practical and cost efficient for travel than North-West.

The recent league expansion in 2012-13 with the additions of Princeton, Orion, Rockridge and Sherrard was the tipping point to Amboy’s move.

“We knew expansion was coming.

We just weren’t sure what form that was going to take,” Thake said. “The conference spoke. We accept this was the decision the majority the conference schools wanted to go, but we also recognized it was time to find another conference.”

The recent struggles of Amboy’s boys team in particular was the last blow.

The Annawan Bravettes’ journey to win another state title has hit a speed bump.

Annawan all-state candidate Jayde VanHyfte went out in the championship game of the Lincoln Trail Conference Tournament with a probable ACL injury, according to Bravettes coach Jason Burkewiecz.

In its first game without VanHyfte, Annawan lost to Wethersfield 67-61 Monday, Jan. 25.

The loss snapped a 64-game win streak dating back to 2011 in Lincoln Trail Conference play, including tournament games.

Annawan had whipped the Lady Geese 68-31 in the LTC championship game two nights before when VanHyfte went down.

Burkiewicz said the Bravettes (23-4) will have “do the best we can. The girls are committed to each other and making the most of our situation,” he said.

The Bravettes beat Mercer County 62-53 Wednesday, Jan. 27.

Business&Ag 15th annual 4-H Day with the St. Louis Cardinals

Missouri and Illinois 4-H members, parents, volunteers and alumni will gather at Busch Stadium on Saturday, May 21, for the 15th annual 4-H Day with the Cardinals.

The National League Central Champion Cardinals will be playing the Arizona Diamondbacks in a 1:15 p.m. game. Tickets for the game will be $25 each and includes a specially designed T-shirt featuring the 4-H Clover on the back and the Cardinals emblem on the front.

Four-H members, leaders, alumni and their families who purchase 4-H Day with the Cardinals tickets will have the opportunity to participate in a parade around the Busch Stadium outfield. Pre-game ceremonies will include a recitation of the 4-H pledge and ceremonial first pitches by an Illinois and Missouri 4-H member. As an added bonus, the Cardinals give-away item for the game is an adult Cardinals pullover. The first 30,000 fans age 16 and older will

receive this one-of-a-kind item.

Tickets for the event must be ordered on the 4-H Day with the Cardinals order form. Ticket order forms are available at the University of Missouri Extension office or on the web at www.mo4h.missouri.edu. Ticket orders must be postmarked by April 11. Tickets usually sell out before the order deadline so families are encouraged to order early. 4-H Clubs, counties or groups of families who would like to be seated together must send their orders in the same envelope.

Families can also participate in the 4-H Day with the Cardinals raffle to win prizes such as throwing out the first pitch, autographed baseballs and tickets to other Cardinal baseball games. Bureau County Soil and Water Conservation will hold annual election of directors

PRINCETON — The Bureau County Soil and Water Conservation District (SWCD) will hold its annual election of directors from 7 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 2, at the USDA Service Center located at 312 E. Backbone Road in Princeton.

The district has three director positions to fill on the board this year. All persons, firms or corporations who hold legal title or are in legal possession of any land lying within the boundaries of Bureau County are eligible to vote at said election, whether as a landowner or a tenant.

Directors serve a two-year term on

the SWCD Board. They are expected to attend monthly board meetings and participate in and promote district programs and activities throughout the county.

Directors are also responsible for establishing SWCD policies and procedures, providing guidance on implementation of conservation programs, accessing natural resource concerns, and working with staff to develop strategies to address these concerns.

IBA From Page 18 The internship provides a college student an outstanding opportunity to assist with IBA’s communication, education and youth programs. Applicants must consider themselves a self-starter, detail-oriented and an outgoing individual who has the ability to work well with others. To be eligible, applicants must be a full-time college student and currently an Illinois Junior Beef Association member from a family that is actively involved in beef production.

The internship spans from approximately mid-May through the Illinois State Fair. Applications are due Feb. 15, 2016. The application is available on the IBA website.

“Scholarship programs reward students who are passionate about the Illinois cattle industry,” said Jill Johnson, IBA director of communications. “We want to recognize the incredible talent and potential among our young members and encourage them in their educational and professional endeavors.”

The IBA offers four $1,000 general scholarships: two to high school seniors and two to current college students. IBA will also award a $3,000 scholarship in memory of past IBA executive vice president Maralee Johnson, a $500 scholarship in memory of Terry Clemons and a $500 scholarship in memory of 1990 IBA Past President Marion Butler. Residents of Ogle County have the opportunity to apply for a $500 scholarship through the IBA. Applications are due March 1, 2016. Applications are available on the IBA website.
