Palm Sunday begins the “Holy Week.” The palms are blessed before the High Mass on Palm Sunday. Vested in red cope and standing at the Epistle side of the altar, the priest recites a short prayer, and then reads a lesson from the book of Exodus which tells of the children of Israel coming to Elim on their way to the Promised Land, where they found a fountain and 70 palm trees.

Outstanding hypnotic show coming to Princeton This Week The Perry Memorial Auxiliary will sponsor a book fair from 7 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Thursday, March 26, and Friday, March 27, in the medical office building lobby at Perry. The Auxiliary will host a bake sale from 7 a.m. to noon Friday, March 27. For more information, contact Karen Russell at 815-876-2250.

The First Lutheran Church in Ohio will host a fish fry from 5 to 7 p.m. Friday, March 27, at the First Lutheran Church in Ohio.

The menu will include fish, potato salad, baked beans, coleslaw, dessert and beverage. Tickets are $7.50 for adults, $4 for children under 10. Carry-outs will be available by calling 815-376-7431. The church is handicap accessible.

The American Red Cross will hold a blood drive from 2 to 6 p.m. Friday, March 27, at Malden Grade School, East Street, Malden.

The Princeton High School Booster Club drawdown will be at 6:30 p.m. Saturday, March 28, (immediately after the PHS alumni basketball game) in the basement of Fitzgerald’s. A chicken and spaghetti dinner will be available. Tickets are being sold for $50 a couple.

The Bureau County 4-H is offering a beginners cake decorating workshop from 10 a.m. to noon Saturday, March 28, at the Bureau County Extension office, 850 Thompson St.,

Princeton. This workshop is open to all youth ages 8-18, youth ages 5-7 may attend with an adult helper. The workshop is free to 4-H members and $5 for non-members. Participants need to bring their own supplies. A supply list is provided at registration.

The bunny will be at the Shoppes at Grand Prairie to welcome spring with a celebration hosted by Bethany Baptist Church and the Shoppes at Grand Prairie from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, March 28. Starved Rock Visitors Center will host a birds of prey program Sunday, March 29. See birds of

prey such as falcons, owls and hawks up-close and learn about the adaptations and behaviors of these birds.

An event to honor Chief Walks with the Wind of the Ho Chunk Nation will take place from 1:30 to 3:30 p.m. Sunday, March 29, in the Great H all at Starved Rock Lodge. His grandson, White Winnebago — Jerry Savage (Ho Chunk Ska Gah) will lead the ceremonies and songs.

PRINCETON — The Princeton Moose Lodge will be jumping with fun, laughter and definite foolishness as Master Hyponotist Capt. Andy excites the audience with his hilarious hypnosis show at 8 p.m. Saturday, April 4, at the Lodge, 1339 N. Euclid Ave. in Princeton.

During the show ordinarily conservative audience members, and even those who aren’t so conservative, will undergo a

complete transformation.

The actions that Capt.

Andy puts them through are hilarious to the audience members, but to the volunteers up on stage it becomes reality. Of course the pandemonium is all great fun and will have the audience laughing non-stop from start to finish during this special appearance.

The show is very unique entertainment and has been called one of the greatest shows on

earth. It combines the fun of total audience participation with the incredible abilities of the mind. You will laugh and applaud for your friends and family up on stage, as you never seen them before.

For instance, the quietest introvert will oftentimes becomes the brightest star.

Girl Scouts of Central Illinois opens registration for summer camps SPRINGFIELD — Girls of all ages are invited to register for Girl Scout Summer Camp. Girl Scouts of Central Illinois (GSCI) has opened registrations for a variety of summer camps and activities at four regional camp sites throughout central Illinois. Girls in grades 1-12 have the opportunity to spend their summer horseback riding, canoeing, kayaking, sailing, swimming, backpacking and camping among other activities. Camp is one of several pathways through which girls can develop their inherent leadership skills in Girl Scouts, as they experience independence, develop new skills, and learn to live in harmony with the environment.

Camps are open to all girls, including non-Girl Scouts. Financial assistance is available. The deadline for registration is two weeks prior to each session, and camp sessions start as early as June 4.

“Experiencing the outdoors is a great way for girls to explore leadership, build skills, develop an appreciation of nature and create life long memories and friendships,” Girl Scouts of Central Illinois CEO Pam Kovacevich said. “The experiences girls have at sum-

mer camp are designed to develop leadership and independence as well as boost their confidence.”

Resident camp sessions are available at two camp sites: GSCI’s newest camp, Camp SOAR located near Litchfield, and Camp Tapawingo in Metamora.

Day Camp opportunities are available at two GSCI Camp properties as well as the Decatur Urban Program Center: Camp Kiwanis in Mahomet, adjacent to Lake of the Woods Forest Preserve, and Camp Widjiwagan located on Lake Springfield. Day camps are the perfect starter camp and before and after care is included at no additional cost.

Resident camp is a camping experience in which campers live at camp, typically for a week.

Girls sleep in platform tents (Tapawingo) or in climate-controlled indoor cabins/bunkhouses (Camp SOAR) with other girls and enjoy a variety of outdoor activities during their stay. Campers can go horseback riding, boating, canoeing and hiking, enjoy archery and arts and crafts and take on our challenge course. They may attend as individual campers or go with a buddy. The girls and their counselors plan activities

and take advantage of the many resources available at camp.

Mini resident camps are a great way to try out residential camp and gain the experience of staying away from home while having new and exciting adventures usually for three days. Activities include exploring the outdoors, going on scavenger hunts, making hands-on crafts, writing fantastic fiction, swimming, hiking, boating and working on puzzle and riddle challenges.

Day camp is the perfect starter camp for girls who want to get comfortable in the outdoors and who are interested in exploring new activities close to home. Before and after care is available at all day camps at no additional charge. Girls may attend day camp as individual campers or go with buddies. The girls and staff plan and carry out activities. Day camp is held at our camp sites as well as in our council communities with council-trained staff.

How about making up your own salad dressings, instead of buying all the big bottles of store bought dressing that never seem to get used up completely.

Honey Poppy Seed Dressing 1/3 cup salad oil 1/4 cup honey 2 tablespoons cider vinegar 2 teaspoons poppy seeds 1/2 teaspoon salt Mixed greens or fresh fruits and melons In a screw top jar, combine all ingredients except the last one. Cover and shake well.

Store in the refrigerator until ready to use. Serve over fresh fruit or mixed greens. Makes 3/4 cup.

Low Calorie Green Onion Dressing 1/2 cup coarsely chopped green onions (8 medium) 1/4 cup reduced calorie mayonnaise or salad dressing 1 tablespoon white wine vinegar or white vinegar 1 tablespoon Dijon style mustard 1/4 teaspoon pepper 1 clove garlic, halved 1 8-ounce carton plain low-fat yogurt

In a blender container or food processor bowl, combine the green onions, mayonnaise or salad dressing, vinegar, Dijon style mustard, pepper and garlic. Cover and blend or process until the green onion is finely chopped. Transfer the dressing mixture to a mixing bowl. Stir in the yogurt. Cover and store the salad dressing in your refrigerator for up to 1 week. Makes about 1 1/4 cups salad dressing.

Pennsylvania Dutch Salad Dressing 1 egg 1/4 cup vinegar 1/3 cup water 2/3 cup sugar 1/2 tablespoon cornstarch 4 to 6 slices bacon, crisp Whip egg in saucepan. Add vinegar, water, sugar and cornstarch. Bring to rolling boil until thickened. Fry bacon until crisp, drain on paper towel. Crumble bacon. Add warm salad dressing and crumbled bacon to lettuce or other desired greens and toss.

Serve immediately.

Sweet and Sour Salad Dressing 3 tablespoons canola oil 4 1/2 teaspoons sugar 1 tablespoon cider vinegar 1 1/2 teaspoons lemon juice

1/4 teaspoon salt 1/4 teaspoon ground mustard 1/4 teaspoon paprika Torn salad greens In a jar with a tight fitting lid, combine the first seven ingredients. Shake well. Serve over salad greens. Serves 2.

Russian Dressing 1/4 cup lower calorie, lower sodium ketchup 1/4 cup water 1 tablespoon powdered fruit pectin 1 tablespoon lemon juice 1/2 teaspoon sugar 1/2 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce 1/4 teaspoon paprika Dash pepper In a screw top jar, combine all of the salad dressing ingredients. Cover and shake well (be sure all pectin is dissolved).

Chill for several hours before using. To store any remaining dressing, cover and refrigerate it for up to 3 days. Shake the dressing before serving. Makes about 1/2 cup.

Buttermilk Bacon Dressing 4 slices bacon 1 cup whole buttermilk 3/4 cup mayonnaise 2 tablespoons distilled white vinegar

1 tablespoon whole grain mustard 2 tablespoons chopped fresh chives 2 teaspoons chopped fresh dill 1/8 teaspoon salt 1/8 teaspoon ground black pepper In a medium skillet, cook bacon over medium heat until crisp. Set bacon aside to cool.

Chop. In a medium bowl, spoon 3 tablespoons rendered bacon fat; add buttermilk, mayonnaise, vinegar, mustard, chives, dill, salt, pepper and reserved bacon.

Stir well. Store in refrigerator for up to 3 days. Makes 2 cups.

Balsamic Vinaigrette 1/4 cup water 1/4 cup balsamic vinegar 2 tablespoons olive oil 1 tablespoon Dijon mustard 1 tablespoon minced fresh basil 1/2 teaspoon pepper Whisk all the ingredients together until blended. Makes 2/3 cup.

PRINCETON — Thursday, March 26, a program on women artists from the late Renaissance through the 20th Century will be presented at 6:30 p.m. by Dana Collins.

Monday, March 30, Cultivating Our Community youth art category art submission deadline is today.

Also, the Monday Night Movie will begin at 6:30 p.m. and feature a man from a family of rich snobs who becomes engaged to a woman from a good-natured but decidedly eccentric family in this classic screwball comedy.

Tuesday, March 31, preschool story time and craft will be at 10:30 a.m. The theme is rainbow fish. Also Tuesday, a program by Eagle Enterprises Recycling will talk about why people should recycle at 6:30 p.m.

SPRING VALLEY — Friday, April 10, Secretary of State Jesse White in cooperation with the Richard A. Mautino Memorial Library are offering a Rules of the Road Review course for all citizens in the Illinois Valley area. The course is from 9:30 to 11:30 a.m. It is a free program and is meant to help participants pass the Illinois driver’s license renewal examination. The course prepares applicants for the general written and road examinations and also provides information on the vision screening. Cleveland St. Thursday, April 16, the Life of Anne Frank will be presented at the library at 6 p.m. Historian Jim Gibbons will present this story of a young girl of faith, hope, relentless spirit and wisdom beyond her years in the meeting room of the library.

WYANET — Thursday, March 26, the Wyanet Library’s book group will meet at 7 p.m. to discuss “The Mockingbird Next Door: Life with Harper Lee”

LAMOILLE — If you would like to take a computer class, call the LaMoille-Clarion Library and let them know. If enough interest is shown, the library will try to schedule a class. Cost would be based on the number of students.

LADD — Preschool story times are held at 10 a.m.

Tuesdays in the children’s department. Story times feature a variety of activities including stories, songs, crafts and much more. The theme will be Easter eggs on March 31.

PERU — Thursday, March 26, the Peru Public Library will host historian Jim Gibbons, who will tell the story of the Chicago school fire that happened on Dec. 1, 1958, which claimed the lives of 92 students and three nuns.

It was the third largest fire in Chicago history and the third largest school fire in the U.S. The program begins at 6 p.m. in the library’s main reading area. During his presentation, Gibbons will also discuss the life and death of 10-year-old Margaret (Peggy) Anne Sansonetti, who was killed that day by smoke inhalation in the fire.

Sheffield Library honors retiring board members Dawn Porter (left) and Kath Clark (right) were honored last week at the Sheffield Public Library Board meeting. Sheffield Public Library Board President Karl Rahr and the rest of the board/librarians presented the two with a gift of thanks and a cake to show their appreciation for serving on the board. The two will retire from the board at the end of April.

PUTNAM (CONDIT) — Stop in at the Putnam (Condit) Branch Library on Saturday, April 11, for hot coffee and pleasant conversation. “Books & Brunch” offers patrons an opportunity to discuss great books, new reads and old favorites with friends over light refreshments.

MAGNOLIA — The Magnolia Branch Library will have a preschool story time for children ages 3, 4 and 5 years old at 10 a.m. every Saturday. Stop in to enjoy a short story and related craft activity.

Wednesday, April 1, the library will show the movie, “Unbroken” at 5:30 p.m. Adapted from Laura Hillenbrand’s book, the epic drama follows the incredible life of Olympian and war hero Louis ‘Louie’ Zamperini who, along with two other crewmen, survived in a raft for 47 days after a near-fatal plane crash in World War II - only to be caught by the Japanese Navy and sent to a prisoner war camp. Also on Wednesday, the Hennepin Book Club will meet at 7 p.m. in the library headquarters.

Illinois Valley Scene

PHS alumni game PRINCETON — Princeton High School will host its 2015 alumni basketball game at 1 p.m. Saturday, March 28, for all former members of the boys’ program. The format will depend on number of players and ages of players.

Booster Drawdown

PRINCETON — The Princeton High School Booster Club will be hosting a drawdown at 6:30 p.m. on Saturday, March 28, (immediately after the PHS alumni basketball game) in the basement of Fitzgerald’s. A chicken and spaghetti dinner will be available. Tickets are being sold for $50 a couple.

Lori’s Walleye Run

SPRING VALLEY — The 29th annual Walleye 5K, now known as Lori’s Walleye Run in memory of longtime booster Lori Guerrini, will be held Saturday, March 28. The race will start at 9 a.m. at Hall High School. There are 12 age divisions for both male and female runners with awards going to the top three in each division along with the top finishers from Spring Valley. Walkers are welcome. Illinois River Walleye Classic

SPRING VALLEY — The weekend of March 28-29, the Spring Valley Walleye Club will host the first annual Illinois River Walleye Classic. Come join in the fun in the first ever spring event in SVWC history. The club and its volunteers have a long time history and experience in the operation of a successful event. Entry fee is $400 per team. Based on a full field of 100 teams the payout will be as follows: first place - $12,000; second place $6,000; third place - $3,000; and 4th-10th will also receive a paycheck.
