Vol. 10 No. 35

All ‘quacked’ up It appears these ducklings who are waiting for customers at Tractor Supply Co. in Princeton are excited for the first day of spring, which officially began Saturday, March 19, at 11:30 p.m. in the Central Daylight Time. The March equinox signals the beginning of spring in the Northern Hemisphere – earliest spring since 1896 – and autumn in the Southern Hemisphere. It marks that special moment when the sun crosses the celestial equator going from south to north. With the time change occurring on Sunday, March 13, as well as the first day of spring, the sunrise is earlier now and nightfall comes later. With Mother Nature’s temperate weather, plants are already sprouting, baby animals are dotting the countryside and many are shirking their winter coats for spring jackets. Also notice the arc of the sun across the sky each day. You’ll find it’s shifting toward the north. Birds and butterflies are migrating back northward too, along with the path of the sun. The Illinois Valley Scene wishes everyone a happy and fruitful spring season. IVS photo/Dave Cook
