What is your job and what makes you good at it? I’m a road construction estimator and project manager. My passion for it is what makes me good at it. I grew up in the industry; it’s my life, my hobby and the only thing I think about. I’m certain people avoid me at parties because I have no interest in talking about anything else. What accomplishments and innovations are you most proud of this year? I recently finished my term as board president for the United Way of Greater McHenry County this past June. I spent six years on the board, and I am very proud of the impact we made in our community. McHenry County is very special to me, so I felt very fortunate to have the opportunity to be a part of an organization that addresses the needs of our county specifically and to be amongst peers who share my passion for our community. I serve on the Centegra Health Systems Foundation Board and am a fifth generation resident of Huntley, so I have been a big supporter of the new hospital in Huntley and was very excited to celebrate the groundbreaking this year. I am extremely

proud to be part of an organization that is so dedicated to the overall health and wellness of our community, and naturally I’m very pleased that they have chosen Huntley as their new home. How do you give back to the community, and what drives your service? I try to align myself with and support any organization that I feel serves the best interests of our entire county. This community has given me so much that it’s impossible to not have the desire to support it and try to make it even better. What is something you have never done but want to do some day? There are so many places in this wonderful nation of ours that I have never seen, so I look forward to the rest of my life, where I will hopefully get to travel all over with my family as well as watch all of the life adventures that my wife and kids will have in their lives. He presently is the treasurer and Legal Aid co-chair of the McHenry County Bar Association. He also has gained the esteemed position as being the McHenry County representative on the board of Prairie State Legal Services. How do you give back to the community, and what drives your service? The biggest things I’ve always wanted to give this community is just honestly education and awareness. For many years I sat on the board of a great local agency that helps kids and people struggling, and it was amazing, but that experience really actually fueled me to work less on the “after-effects” and to keep working more towards the education and prevention aspect. What drives us to want to do this is not just reaching people who are struggling and need to get their health and happiness back, but even more importantly, to reach people and help them and their kids to never have to go down that path in the first place. The group was successful in establishing strong bonds with each other and participating in activities that pushed their limits and required team work and problem solving skills. I am grateful for the opportunities that SASS has provided. I will cherish the growth and

What is the best career advice you have received? A quote from a very famous old-time chiropractor Dr. BJ Palmer’s writings: “Early to bed, early to rise. Work like hell, and advertise.” Which CEO would you most like to spend the day with and why? Richard Branson. experiences gained over the last couple of years and will take them with me into my new position as Mental Health Court Clinician for McHenry County. How do you give back to the community, and what drives your service? Giving back to the community has always been present in my household. I think it is important to value and invest in the community we live in. Currently, I volunteer for Northwest CASA and respond to victims of sexual abuse in the county. Advocacy for victims of sexual abuse and domestic violence extends outside of my professional role due to the extent that it affects our communities.

Nominator’s comment: “As a sufferer of migraines and asthma, I accepted this as a reality of my life, something I just had to live with. I met Dr. Tony in the fall of 2012 and he assured me he could help, that I could break myself of the cycle without resorting to an endless supply of prescriptions and pain. Within weeks of care at his office, Premier Wellness Chiropractic, I was already seeing improvements and for the first time, saw the hope that I didn’t need to live a life of suffering from these reoccurring illnesses.’” Katie Arnold said. “Within a few months, Dr. Tony brought me on as his newest chiropractic assistant. ... Dr. Tony has made it his mission to make sure the next generation of children have a vision of health and wellness that is beyond our current scope, to convey this message of health and hope to the community around him, and to educate his fellow doctors to bring the same message and mission to their communities.”

What is something you have never done but want to do some day? I would like to become a mom and foster parent one day. One experience on my bucket list is to join the Peace Corps. What is the best career advice you have received? Work hard, and be nice. Which CEO would you most like to spend the day with and why? I would love to spend a day with Oprah. This year we have had some significant growth at Exemplar, and I have been able to expand my department. Also, I have restructured our marketing efforts into something I call “Charitable Giving Marketing,” where Exemplar supports

How do you give back to the community, and what drives your service? My grandfather used to say “Paying taxes is not enough to be a good citizen.” He instilled in my father and all of his grandchildren that being a good member of the community meant giving of yourself. I attribute my deep commitment to this community to all of the wonderful role models I have been fortunate to have in my life. I have the honor of sitting on the board of directors for CASA of McHenry County. CASA of McHenry County provides trained volunteers to advocate for sexually and physically abused children in court. I work to raise funds for this very important advocacy program so it can continue to represent our most vulnerable citizens. I am also chair of the Crystal Lake Young Professionals, a division of the Crystal Lake Chamber of Commerce, a group of young business men and women committed to connecting tomorrow’s leaders through providing opportunities to grow professionally while serving the community. What is your job and what makes your good at it? My job is to set the global, strategic direction of product innovation for key markets, such as hair care, deodorant and home care. I define future market trends in packaging in order to develop revolutionary products that have never been seen before in the market place. I predict what consumers will want three to five years into the future based on consumer behavior and their current problem states. I do this all around the world and work with some of the largest consumer packaged goods companies to bring new products to market. I am good at what I do because I tend to think big and I am a creative problem solver. I have a great ability to put people at ease. So whether I am speaking with a customer or interviewing a consumer, it ends up being like a conversation between old friends. That really assists me in being able to dig deep and extract needs or problems consumers want solved. Further, I have worked in a global environment almost my entire career. This allows me to find the wonder in all places around the world and I thoroughly enjoy working with such a diverse group of people. It is a nonstop learning experience for me. What accomplishments and innovations are you most proud of this year? Externally, I was invited to present about my innovations and the innovation process at the global Fabric and Home Care Headquarters of Procter & Gamble in Geneva, Switzerland. There I spoke to top management about how Aptar’s innovation process is rooted in consumer behavior and that we spend quite a bit of time conducting consumer tests. I then showcased new product developments that occurred because of the knowledge I found. I was able to share trends that could shape new product launches in laundry and solidified our relationship as an innovative supplier to the largest CPG company in the world. Internally, I conduct-

ed massive consumer tests and interviews in order to understand consumer habits and behaviors when using deodorant. I was able to extract pain points and knowledge from consumers that has led to a brand new, never-before-seen deodorant product for a consumer group that is currently being underserved. This product has yet to hit the store shelves so that’s all I can share at the moment. How do you give back to the community, and what drives your service? I am deeply involved with youth sports. For example, I coach youth bowling Saturday mornings at Crystal Bowl. I have been an avid bowler since I was four so I enjoy the ability to pass on some of my knowledge to kids that have an interest in the sport. But I have a deep passion for community service through Rotary. Rotary and I have a long history. Rotary International sponsored me my junior year in high school as an exchange student. I spent the year in Argentina. I really have Rotary to thank for the path that I am on with my career so about three years ago when I went looking for a way to give back, I found the Rotary Club of Crystal Lake Dawnbreakers. One couldn’t ask for a better service club to belong to. When you hear the old cliché about “I want to make a difference,” you don’t have to roll your eyes. It actually happens with the Dawnbreakers. I see firsthand how the money raised for charity (about $1.25 million so far) helps the people in my community and can make a difference. That is what drives me to be involved, knowing that I am helping make a difference and not just with the money but with my time, as well. What is something you have never done but want to do some day? I would like to climb Mount Kilimanjaro. What a way to feel like you’re on top of the world.

Which CEO would you most like to spend the day with and why? I would love to spend the day with Howard Schultz of Starbucks. He is a walking example of how you can take your thoughts or ideas and make them a reality. He is a successful entrepreneur by identifying needs and solving consumer problems. He has kept the core values at the center of his business despite growing fast (something I enjoy, as well, for being part of Aptar). He consistently works in and for his community. And he realizes people form the foundation of his business. He respects diversity and has been quoted saying, “We want to provide our people with dignity and self-esteem, so we offer tangible benefits.” I can’t think of a better way to spend the day and learn from an innovative entrepreneur that works within his community and invests in his people. It is something to aspire to. Nominator’s comment: “Kay Stanish is the woman who does it all,” said husband Jeff Stanish. “She has a successful career globe-trotting around the world. She is a mother to two wonderful and active boys. And she is an active philanthropist. I sometimes wonder when she has time to rest.”

I learn so much about myself and others by seeing things from different points of view. What is the best career advice you have received? I think this is more life advice rather than career advice, but my parents always encouraged me to get involved in a variety of different activities so that I could learn what it is I liked and wanted to continue to pursue. I was a caddie at Big Foot Country Club in Fontana, Wisconsin, when I was 12 years old. One word that describes you? Reliable What is your job and what makes you good at it? My job is to put their needs first and to help them to develop and perform at their highest potential. If they know that I’m committed to that, and they trust me with that responsibility, then I’m doing my job.

What accomplishments and innovations are you most proud of this year? The Academy is a program designed to help students who struggle in a traditional classroom setting to stay on track to graduate from high school. What is something you have never done but want to do some day? I’ve never been to Europe. I’d especially like to go to Spain because my wife is a Spanish major who has spent considerable time abroad, and Charlie and Martha are both in District 200’s dual language program. What is the best career advice you have received? It’s not exactly advice, but my dad was a high school teacher and coach, and I remember someone once saying of him, “Dick Baker has the longest fuse of any man I’ve ever met.” I inherited some of his patience, and that’s really critical to this job. I think that if you model good behavior and give students and players enough opportunities to make the right choice, they will get there eventually.

Which CEO would you most like to spend the day with and why? He’s not technically a CEO, but John Calipari. His book “Players First: Coaching from the Inside Out” has had a big impact on the way I teach and coach. We have some different philosophies when it comes to basketball, but I think we share that core belief in servant leadership. Nominator’s comment: “As a teacher, [Baker] gives students the tools they need to help reach their academic goals. As a coach, he instills a sense of teamwork and pride in his student-athletes. As an extremely active parent of three young children, he somehow finds the energy to be a positive role model through the countless ways he gives back to the community. Nominator’s comment: “Karrie is an awe-inspiring person for many reasons. One of the main reasons I have nominated Karrie is because of her passion, said Katie Bobrow, a longtime friend and employee. “She is one of the most strong-minded people I know, and she uses this for bettering her business and her community. Some would say that Karrie tends to spread herself too thin. She is always involved with an event or charity of some sort, or she is traveling the country bettering her knowledge of the cycling industry and continuing her education in all things bicycle related. However, I know that if you asked Karrie, she would say that this is exactly the way she wants it and would not choose to live her life any differently.

Transform Your Business! Transform Your Life!™

uring her 20-year sales and marketing career, Business Strategist Kathleen Caldwell restructured, revitalized and re-energized corporate teams and organizations. In the process, she learned more than how to sell complex products and build effective teams.

“Through my experience I realized that I educated and inspired people not only to succeed in business, but also enjoy a fantastic quality of life,” said Caldwell, who held major leadership roles within several startup and established companies. She could have stayed in Corporate America, but... “I stepped back and realized that what I truly wanted to do was to bring this success methodology and knowledge to a broader corporate and individual audience,” she said. That decision led to the founding of Caldwell Consulting Group, LLC and a series of specialized educational and mentoring programs known collectively as the WHEE Institute™. An acronym for the Wealthy, Healthy, Energetic Edge, the institute is unique. Its philosophy and approach are holistic and comprehensive. “Our mission is to help people be successful in business, health, vitality and life. We focus on strategies to love our business and career, body and life, Caldwell explained. A sought-after speaker, business consultant and author, Caldwell has developed programs that incorporate education, coaching, mentoring and collaboration with other WHEE participants from around the globe. WHEE participants learn and implement new strategies for successfully managing their business and career, which carries over to their lives replacing exhaustion with inspiration, and recapturing the thrill of setting and achieving new goals. The WHEE Institute offers specialized programs for executives, entrepreneurs, attorneys and organizational teams.

The WHEE Institute’s Team Intelligence™ program focuses on strategies for the group to succeed as a whole, renew the energy and creativity of team leaders and inspire the emergence of new group leaders. Active in the community, Caldwell’s collaboration with local, national and global business leaders continues to fuel her innovation and spark new ideas. She is the Chairperson of the Crystal Lake Chamber of Commerce Foundation and a member of many Chambers of Commerce and professional organizations. She has also received numerous awards and honors including a 2013 Women of Achievement Award, a Women of Influence Award presented by the Daily Herald/Business Ledger, Congressional Award of Excellence and many others. Caldwell also holds three United States trademarks for her work in entrepreneurship, team building and leadership. Her book, Blueprint for Success features Caldwell, Dr. Ken Blanchard, author of the One Minute Manager, Dr. Stephen Covey, author of Seven Habits of Highly Effective People, and thirteen business experts, sharing their insights on success and how to achieve it. In applying WHEE strategies to her own life, Caldwell is also a certified ZUMBA® Instructor, fitness and peak performance enthusiast. “Not only can you achieve your dreams and goals, you can have a fun time doing it,” she said.
