njoy one last summer fling – of a melon – and other activities as Lake in the Hills brings the festival season to an end this weekend. The 13th annual Summer Sunset Festival begins Aug. 30 and runs through Sept. 1 at Sunset Park in Lake in the Hills. Along with the usuals – a carnival, parade, fireworks, Melon Propellin’ and other festivities – this year’s event features a night of wine tasting from 5 to 10:30 p.m. Aug. 30. “That’s our big new thing,” said Trudy Wakeman, Lake in the Hill’s director of parks and recreation. For $10, participants receive a glass and five tickets for wine samples from various wineries. Also new this year, the final band – Mondern Day Romeos – will play during the fireworks, 8:30 to 10 p.m. Sept. 1 on the Main Stage. In previous years, the bands stopped before the fireworks. Other featured bands include Petty Cash, featuring the music of Tom Petty and Johnny Cash, as well as Libido Funk Circus’ dance and rock songs from the 1960s through today. 28 Days will play a wide array of country, pop, classic rock, R&B, dance, disco and Motown, while 7th Heaven will take the stage as one of Chicago’s most popular bands. No Left Turn specializes in rock ’n’ roll oldies, with Lake in the Hills Village President Paul Mulcahy on lead guitar. He’s joined by Dave Frederick on lead vocals and keyboard, Mike Pasternak on bass and acoustic guitar, Tom Stock on rhythm and lead guitar and vocals and Gary Hill on drums and vocals. The group of friends first came together about two years ago, challenged

Libido Funk Circus to take on all the younger bands at Battle of the Bands, Mulcahy said. “We’ve been fooling around with this for a couple of years. ... It’s a lot of fun and something to take up some time,” he said. Interested in music at a younger age, Mulcahy said he felt he never really had the talent for it. While in the Navy, he said he taught himself to play guitar a bit. Then he didn’t touch a guitar for 30 years. “I bought an acoustic guitar and started messing around again,” he said. Some friends were at the same stage so they came together, he said, to play some ’60s and ’70s rock ’n’ roll. “It’s a blast,” he said.

All the festival bands are free, Wakeman stressed, as well as numerous children’s activities at Kids’ Korner Saturday afternoon. Saturday’s 10 a.m. parade will include representatives of the Algonquin Lake in the Hills Interfaith Food Pantry with shopping carts to collect donations, such as canned goods and paper towels. The organization is this year’s parade grand marshal, Wakeman said. More attractions include the Battle of the Bands, Horseshoes Tournament, Sunset 5K, Arts & Crafts Show, food and beer tents, a car show, a bags tournament and the “Got Talent?” competition. “We have a good variety, dancers, singers, violin players,” Wakeman said.
