FALL IN LOVE

with Reading RECIPE

Double-Chocolate Brownies

CRAFT

Big-Hearted Bookworm

Welcome to PW’s Playhouse February is the perfect time to show your love—for books! Take a break from your overly “booked” schedule, and declare a reading night with your loved ones. Add some flare to your current book with our Big-Hearted Bookworm craft. Then, whip up some warm treats like our Double-Chocolate Brownies, make a reading fort in the living room, and snuggle up with your new book!

BIG-HEARTED BOOKWORM

Let this little worm help your child fall in love with reading. With a few simple supplies, your child will have a new reading companion to act as the guardian of their book pages. Let their creative juices flow: use any colors, make multiple antennae, or draw a goofy grin. Don’t forget to give the bookworm a name!

Supplies

1 big foam heart | 8 small foam hearts | 2 tiny foam hearts | Wiggle eyes Glitter glue | Pipe cleaner | Scissors

Instructions 1

Glue the 8 small hearts in a row, overlapping each heart slightly.

2

Glue the big foam heart at one end of the row. This will be the bookworm’s head.

3

Glue two wiggle eyes onto the front of the big heart.

4

Cut off two short antennae from the pipe cleaner. A good suggested length for each antenna is two inches long.

5

Glue the antennae to the back of the bookworm’s head.

6

Glue two hearts to the top of the pipe cleaner antennae.

7

Using the glitter glue, draw a smile on the bookworm.

8

Let dry, then use in your current book!

Fall in love with Reading

The love of books is a lifelong relationship. It’s more than just stories about unicorns and buried treasure—reading strengthens your mind. There are endless benefits, including better speech, increased logical skills, enhanced concentration and discipline, understanding other cultures, and a general increase in knowledge. Parents can play a large part in building this relationship with their child.

Tips to get you started:

The more you read, the more things you will know. The more you learn, the more places you will go! Dr. Seuss

Read out loud: Make the book come alive with voices and actions. Create a reading zone: Set up an atmosphere at home that is comfortable, inviting, and will excite your child to re-visit for reading time. Draw it out: Read out loud to your child while allowing him/her to draw the story visually. Visit the library: Allow your child to browse the shelves and get submerged into the magic of the literary world. Use their interests: Pick book topics based on your child’s favorite things and activities. If your child loves superheroes—start with a superhero book! Use the buddy system: Designating a stuffed animal for your child to read with can encourage independent reading.

RACE

Have the kids cut a large heart out of each piece of paper using the scissors.

one side of 3) On have them write

the heart, an action. (Examples: skip, crawl, crab walk, hop in circles, walk backwards, etc.)

4) Place the hearts on the opposite side of the room, faced down (keeping the stacks separate).

5) Have

the kids make a line within their team.

6) On go, the first player runs to

the pile and takes a heart. The player then runs back to the group and the whole team does the action written on the heart. The player then races back to return the heart (to the bottom of the pile), and the next player in line repeats.
