Shaker Village is on a mission to inspire generations through discovery by sharing the legacies of the Kentucky Shakers. These good people form a little world within themselves, and a visit to them is well worth making. It affords real rest and such a novelty in the quiet life as can nowhere else be found within a reasonable distance. Plan a visit to SHAKER VILLAGE! Shaker Village, the nonprofit organization, opened its doors to guests from around the world in April 1968. By the end of that year, some 50,000 guests were kindly welcomed to this site. In 2018, we celebrate those visionaries and trailblazers who came before us and continue to honor the legacy of the Kentucky Shakers who blazed their own trail more than 200 years ago.
Across Shaker Village’s 3,000 acres, farmers, chefs, naturalists, painters, archivists, craftsmen and storytellers are working hard to make great things happen. Shaker Village is not a window into the past to be peered at from behind the ropes. It is a village at work.
V I L L A G E WELCOME CENTER Preservation work to the 1815 Carpenters’ Shop was completed in 2017, and the building is now home to a one-stop guest services and information hub— the Welcome Center. Check in to The Inn and make dining reservations. Receive an interactive introduction to the Shaker Village mission and message. Shop featured products, including Shaker oval boxes, honey from The Preserve and logo merchandise. Whatever your needs, let guest services help blaze your trail.

In the fall of 2017, Shaker Village began preservation work on the Centre Family Dwelling and Meeting House. Both projects are anticipated to be completed by fall of 2018.
The main goal of the preservation project is to preserve the buildings by making them weather-tight with new siding, repointing masonry, new roofs, repairing window frames and sashes, and paint. Much of this work can be seen from the turnpike. You are invited to take a walk, watch the work in progress and learn.

In the interiors, heating and cooling systems and lighting are being added, and plaster walls and ceilings are being repaired and painted. A series of hard hat tours have been scheduled to allow a limited number of guests the opportunity to see the ongoing interior work. Check the daily schedule for dates and times. Then, be certain to plan a return visit later in the year to witness the finished projects and see how these buildings have been prepared for future generations.

One of Kentucky’s premier craft events, the fair attracts the elite among regional artisans, as well as up-and-coming new artists, and boasts an assortment of crafts, including exceptional pottery, jewelry, glassware, woven rugs, needle craft, basketry, leather goods, floral design and Shaker reproductions.

Join us for a celebration of off-road running and hiking with distances for every level! The courses will take participants through The Preserve’s amazing spring scenery on a variety of single track and turf trails. End the day with a post-race party, complete with good beer and good friends.
Revel in all things fall and kick off the harvest season with a down-home celebration for the entire family! Take a hayride, paint a pumpkin, climb hay stacks and play in the bouncy house. Shop for honey, breads and jams at the Harvest Market, then meet the farm animals and tour the apple orchard. Enjoy live music, food trucks and much more!

Spend the weekend with world-acclaimed chamber musicians from New York’s Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center. Now in its 12th year and as seen on PBS’s Live from Lincoln Center, the Chamber Music Festival of the Bluegrass is a Central Kentucky cultural destination.
Join Shaker Village and the Long Run Woodford Hounds fox hunters for this grand, traditional event featuring a blessing of the hounds, riders and the fox, followed by the first meet of the formal hunting season. Warm up with à la carte ham biscuits, Bloody Marys and Irish coffee alongside roaring outdoor fire pits.
Well Crafted— Brews + Bands JUNE 16 Celebrate the quality and diversity of Kentucky’s music and craft beer cultures with a flavorful mix of regional craft breweries and favorite local musicians in a venue like no other. SPRING DISCOVERIES Spring at Pleasant Hill was—and continues to be—a time of renewal, both mentally and physically. Letting the light in, after the long dark winter, was an important part of the renewal process. The buildings at Pleasant Hill were built to capture light. The transom windows keep light flowing above doors, the arches direct light to the corridors, and even the closets have windows! Discover the beliefs behind these buildings and the ways in which the Shakers blended the physical and spiritual elements of their lives in this season of renewal.

As Pleasant Hill sister Hortense Hoosier said, “See the shrubs and flowers all blooming/ Bees and insects sweetly humming…/ All the trees and forests showing/ Nature in her beauties growing.” This summer, discover the wonders that inhabit this central Kentucky landscape while hiking the trails or cruising the Kentucky River.

Dixie Belle: Kentucky River Culture (June) Board the Dixie Belle Riverboat and take a trip into Kentucky’s past. Navigate the role that the river has played in both major historical events and the everyday lives of Kentuckians, from the time of the Native Americans until today.
Dixie Belle: Engineering a River (July + August) Embark on a journey into Kentucky’s geological and ecological past, present and future aboard the Dixie Belle Riverboat. Cruise past limestone cliff walls more than 450 million years old and learn about the formation of the Palisades and the human-engineered features along the river.
Wagon Ride: Movers + Shakers Experience the establishment of Pleasant Hill through the true movers of this community—draft animals! Discover what roles these animals filled for the Shakers and how they remain active onsite today.
FALL HARVESTS Autumn is a natural time to look outward upon the bounty of nature to find meaning. For the Shakers, harvesting and processing crops reaffirmed their faith. They sought perfection through the practice of the Shaker saying, “Hands to work and hearts to God.” From June until late October, Shaker families would work together processing the smallest apple, reaffirming their belief in waste not, want not. As a mark of permanence, industry and thrift, the orchard still embodies the spirit of Pleasant Hill. Find the value in the smallest of things by saving seeds from native plants and cultivating your own garden.

Each fall, hundreds of millions of monarch butterflies migrate from the United States to warmer regions in Mexico and California. Take an easy hike through The Preserve and learn how its wildflowers serve as important habitat for butterflies and other essential pollinators, then help tag monarchs to track and monitor their annual migration.
Connect to the 200+ year tradition of broom making at Pleasant Hill. Begin with small brushes, learning the craft and moving up to cobwebbers—a hand-tied broom built on a handle.

Blessing of the Hounds November 24 Join Shaker Village and the Long Run Woodford Hounds fox hunters for this grand, traditional event featuring a blessing of the hounds, riders and the fox, followed by the first meet of the formal hunting season. Warm up with Ă la carte ham biscuits, Bloody Marys and Irish coffee alongside roaring outdoor fire pits.

Dixie Belle: Civil War (September + October) The Kentucky River has a long and tumultuous history. The Shakers were just one group who relied on the river for their livelihood—a livelihood that was threatened during the Civil War. Take a narrated journey along the Kentucky River and explore how the Civil War affected the Shakers at Pleasant Hill.
Wagon Ride: Travel Tails (September + October) Board the horse-drawn wagon and hear how horses brought the Shakers prosperity. Discover what threats faced Shaker horses during a time when one animal served as an invaluable means of interacting with the world.
Evening Hayrides (September + October) Jump on board the hay wagon for a fun evening ride around The Historic Centre every Friday and Saturday night. Explore rarely-seen views of Shaker Village as the stars begin to twinkle.
WINTER CHEERS The holidays were a time of togetherness for the Pleasant Hill Shakers. Reconciliation and unity were built into their holiday traditions, as is stated in the Millennial Laws from 1845, “the order of God requires that on Christmas day Believers should make perfect reconciliation, one with an other [sic]; and leave all grudges, hard feelings, and disaffection one toward an other [sic], eternally behind on this day.” For the Shakers, ridding themselves of worldly sentiments brought them closer to achieving heaven on earth. Join us to examine the ways in which their traditions continue to influence the work that we do here.
